Facility Enhancements and Investments

Lycoming continues to make enhancements to its 100+ year old facility to improve its manufacturing capabilities and better support its customer base.

Lycoming iE2M TEO-540-C1A Engine

iE2 also powers Evolution Aircraft Company’s Evolution Piston aircraft. Designated as a YTEO-540-B1A, Evolution’s iE2 configuration delivers 350HP from a twin turbocharged and intercooled six-cylinder arrangement. The propeller governor is electronically controlled, along with other systems, to maximize performance of the engine and aircraft.

In addition Lycoming received FAA approval to utilize ion nitriding to heat treat crankcases in a more environmentallyfriendly way. Indeed, Lycoming’s ion nitriding process was cited by Air Transport Action Group as an Aviation Climate Solution in 2015.

The Materials Laboratory performs basic research that enables Lycoming to develop significant enhancements to its engine components. Whether it’s improving wear characteristics to extend the component life of genuine Lycoming parts or improving materials to help boost the horsepower of the latest Lycoming engine models, the Materials Laboratory’s science spurs innovations that cannot be duplicated in the industry.

Engine Technology Advancements:

iE2: The Integrated Electronic Engine (iE2) represents the flagship of Lycoming’s innovation. iE2 couples the reliability customers expect from Lycoming with state-of-the-art aviation technologies. This electronically-controlled engine system provides a truly unique flight experience. The iE2 engine uses advanced computer logic, so engine parameters have double or triple redundancy. Pilots get the performance they desire without the weight and cost of additional sensors. iE2’s single-lever controls allow pilots to manage mixture control and propeller control electronically so they can focus on what's ahead. Using engine data from recording technology, mechanics have deeper insights into your engine's performance. The iE2 engine uses optimized and automatic fuel leaning for improved fuel efficiency during take-off, climb and cruise. Tecnam of Italy is utilizing a single turbo, non-intercooled Part 33 certified TEO-540-C1A iE2 on its twin-engine 11 passenger P2012 Traveller aircraft. TECNAM installed the iE2 engines on its test aircraft in late 2015 and first flight was in July 2016. Over 100 flight hours have since been recorded in the Traveller test program, with the Traveller making its public debut at the 2017 AERO Friedrichshafen.

Fuels Leadership

Lycoming continues to invest in the testing and compatibility of various fuel options with Lycoming engines to stimulate advancements in aviation technology. Lycoming has received ASTM D7547 UL 91 unleaded avgas approval on numerous engine models, and these approvals are documented in the company’s Service Instruction 1070 Specified Fuels for Spark-Ignited Gasoline Aircraft Engine Models.

In 2010 the company launched its in-house piston line, which consists of a series of machines with robots that turn raw forgings into pistons. The piston manufacturing cell has the capability to produce one piston every two minutes.

Driving innovation requires a dedication to the development of new capabilities and continuous improvement. The Lycoming Materials Laboratory is one of the most advanced labs of its kind in general aviation, staffed by some of the most capable scientists in the industry.

Lycoming now offers an interactive “Thunderbolt Engine Builder” tool at www.Lycoming.com, which enables customers to configure a Thunderbolt engine of their choice.

As Lycoming receives fuels approvals for additional engine models, the company publishes revisions to its Service Instruction 1070. Lycoming IO-390-C3B6 Engine

390 Series: Cirrus announced its G6 SR20 in January 2017, which features a Lycoming IO-390-C3B6. This engine is a newly designed 215HP Lycoming IO-390 with a cold air induction system, and marks the first certified production Cirrus aircraft to be powered by a Lycoming engine. Cold air induction pushes cold air directly into each cylinder and carries more oxygen into the cylinders, translating into more power and better efficiency. In addition to the Cirrus application, the IO-390-C3B6 was introduced on the Tecnam P2010 MkII 390 in April 2017. The Lycoming 390 allows this aircraft to climb at 1,050ft/m and cruise on 75% power at 161kts. The 390 is capable of consuming fuels other than 100LL and is an example of how Lycoming is working to provide the consumer with more choices and features.

BAE Solution to Counter Laser Attack Threat

BAE engineers have developed a low cost, lightweight, flexible system that can block dangerous laser light to protect pilots and flight crew from hostile attacks.

STC for MT-Equipped Cessna P210N Silver Eagle

MT-Propeller has received the FAA STC SA3976NY for the next generation five-blade Quiet Fan Jet scimitar composite propeller on the Cessna P210N Silver Eagle, equipped with a Rolls Royce 250-B17F/2 turbine. The installation reduces ground roll and take-off distance over 50ft obstacle by more than 15%; enhances climb performance by 4%; provides a jet-like noise and vibration level; has approx. 8.1lb less weight than the original threeblade metal propeller; complies with strict German noise regulations of 2010; and improves the ramp appeal of the aircraft.

Laser attacks targeting pilots and air crews are becoming a major concern across the world with most attacks reported to take place during take-off and landing. They are caused by cheap, high-powered hand held devices that are readily available on the internet. Results of these attacks include distraction, obscuring of instruments and dials, a high probability for short-lived ‘flash’ blindness and even permanent eye damage. Utilising a novel film the technique is selective in the way it prevents laser transmission, meaning a high level of natural light can still shine through the canopy with minimal colour distortion. TruTrak Vizion Approved for Cessna 177

UK Pilot Licensing Makeover

EAA STC, LLC has received FAA approval to begin selling STCs for the Cessna 177 series for the installation of the TruTrak Vizion Autopilot. The Approved Model List (AML) for this STC includes models F through S of the Cessna 172 series.

ACS Flight Training Upgrades Technology

The new services are part of the CAA’s plans to update the licensing system for the UK aviation industry. e-Licensing went live early in December 2017 for commercial pilots, with a service for private licence applications due to follow in January 2018.

ACS Flight Training has launched the Fast Tack ATPL modular course at Perth Airport in Scotland. The course consists of seven flight and ground-based training modules that incorporate the training required for the issue of a (f)Airline Transport Pilots Licence.

Once the new service is in place, licence holders who require a same-day service or who have an application support enquiry will need to book an appointment. Applicants without an appointment visiting the CAA’s Aviation House may still be able to secure an appointment for that day, but this will be subject to availability and will be charged at an increased fee of £200 for a licence application or £50 for application support.

The school is the first in Scotland to offer the Multi Engine class rating and Multi Engine Instrument Rating in the DA42 Twinstar aircraft and the Alsim AL42 flight simulator.

Trade-in Offer for New Garmin TXi Displays

With the announcement of G500 TXi and G600 TXi, Garmin is enabling customers to upgrade existing G500 and G600 installations to the newer TXi Flight Displays. Available through June 30, Garmin is offering a trade-in program for original G500 and G600 displays, allowing customers to upgrade to the new G500 TXi or G600 TXi flight displays while utilizing their existing system sensors. Trade-in credit amounts are available on request. To be eligible, the displays currently installed in an aircraft must be warranty registered.

One Million Deliveries for Garmin

Garmin celebrated the delivery of the one-millionth certified avionics product from its manufacturing facility in Olathe, Kansas. The milestone product was a GTX 3000 DO-260B compliant Mode S Extended Squitter (ES) transponder, which enables ADS-B Out transmissions and features TCAS II/ACAS II compatibility for a wide range of business and transport category aircraft.

Avfuel Welcomes Westair Aviation

Pilot Flight Academy (PFA) based in Norway has ordered two new DA42 NG simulators from Diamond Aircraft in Austria to meet the growing demand for new airline pilots. According to PFA CEO, Frode Granlund, “These simulators are a part of our long-term strategy and expansion plan. We have invested highly in people and good administrative systems to be able to educate larger groups of future airline pilots. Currently, we have 150 students on the integrated pilot education and we are planning to double that number to 300 students in the next two years.”

Due to the smaller diameter, the five-blade MT-Propeller has more ground clearance for less blade tip erosion and the natural composite blades provide significant inside and outside noise reduction.

UK pilots applying for a licence or rating will soon benefit from a new streamlined process, says the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and from early December 2017 commercial pilots, could make applications via a new online ‘e-Licensing’ system, and then track its progress through a personal portal account. In addition, pilots who need to apply in person at the CAA’s Gatwick HQ will be able to book dedicated time slots.

What is an Aircraft Trust and How Does it Work?

Civil or general aviation is a popular pass-time in the United States, both for pleasure and business. For those who are interested in FAA registration for a privately-owned airplane, here are some answers on how trusts work.

Who is eligible to register an aircraft in the US? An aircraft may be eligible for FAA registration if it is not registered in another country. To qualify for registration, the aircraft owner must meet these requirements.

The aircraft owner must be: • An individual who is a US citizen. • A partnership where each partner is a US citizen. • A corporation or association organized under US or State laws of which the president and at least two thirds of the board of directors and other managing officers are US citizens and at least 75% of the voting interest is owned or controlled by US citizens. • An individual citizen of a foreign country lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the US. • A US government unit or subdivision. • A non-US citizen corporation organized and doing business under the laws of the US or one of the States as long as the aircraft is based and primarily used in the US. Sixty percent of all flight hours must be from flights starting and ending within the United States.

What if an aircraft owner does not meet FAA requirements? Foreign nationals and others who are not eligible for aircraft ownership under the FAA requirements may still be interested in registering their aircraft. For these individuals, establishing a trust is the best way to maintain FAA registration in the United States.

What is an aircraft trust? An aircraft trust is set up to give the airplane ownership to a trustee who meets the FAA registration requirements on behalf of the true owner. In the trust, the true owner is known as the trustor or trust beneficiary. The title and registration are held in the trustee’s name. The FAA has access to aircraft trust filing paperwork, giving them the identity of the beneficiary.

What are the advantages of a trust? Trusts are primarily set up when aircraft owners do not meet the requirements to register their airplane with the FAA. The FAA is widely accepted, and aircraft that maintain their registration generally have higher resale values. While FAA registration is the primary reason for aircraft trusts, they also might be set up for structural purposes, simplification purposes, or convenience. Whatever the reason, a trust can be maintained for an indefinite period of time.

How does an aircraft trust work? • A plane is placed in trust and the title of the aircraft is registered to the name of the trustee. The beneficiary of the trust owns a beneficial interest in the trust. • All correspondence from the FAA goes to the Owner Trustee, who then forwards that information to the beneficiary. • An operating or lease agreement is created between the beneficiary (or a separate third party) and the trustee, giving the right to operate the aircraft back to the beneficial owner. • The Operator is obligated to insure, maintain, and operate the aircraft in accordance with FAA requirements. • The beneficiary can dissolve the trust at any time for any reason. • The title can be transferred back to the beneficiary at any time, although they may not be able to maintain the FAA registration. • The trustee cannot sell the aircraft without the beneficiary’s permission. • The Trustee receives all correspondence from the FAA and passes it on to the beneficiary owner. GAMA Q3 2017 Shipment Analysis

The Q3 2017 GAMA shipment report was entirely consistent with what Honeywell and JETNET told us to expect, reports Mike Potts, General Aviation analyst. The market is holding its own but growth is nowhere to be seen among turbine aircraft.

The brightest star in the GAMA universe was the piston market, where deliveries were up 4% to 724 units (over 696 last year).

First Flight for 10,000th Kit Built Van’s RV

A FIRST TIME kit builder has built the 10,000 Van’s RV-7 followed by with his first flight taking place November 24. During the build David Porter, fitted a Lycoming O-360-A1A, Hartzell blended airfoil prop, GRT/Garmin VFR avionics and seats by Flightline Interiors. Pilot, David, who is a relative newcomer to the RV world bought serial number 74311 (the 4311th RV-7/7A empennage kit sold) making it the 1,662nd RV-7 to fly.

Piston Singles Market Highlights The piston singles market leader continues to be Cirrus by a wide margin, with 236 airplanes between January-September in 2017 compared with 226 a year ago. This included 87 in the third quarter compared with 73 a year ago. For Cirrus the piston market is doing quite nicely. Piston Twins Market Highlights The piston twin market is doing very well – in fact it is the strongest segment reported by GAMA, with deliveries up 12.63% from 2016. Piston twins total 107 units so far for 2017, up from 95 last year. Market leader is Diamond with 53, up from 52 last year including 17 in Q3 2017 and 2016. More information from: www.gama.aero

Van's Aircraft began to sell RV-3 planes back in 1973, so over the last 44 years a new RV has taken to the air every 1.6 days, on average. No-one is exactly sure when the 1,000th RV flew - the best guess is around early 1994. The 2,000 mark was passed in November 1998, nineteen years ago.

We're confident that Van's will be there, and that plenty of RVs will still be delighting their owners, and taking new generations of builders into the sky.”

Only eight of the original models were built. In China Windecker has built a 90,000 sq/m manufacturing facility from which the first aircraft are expected to come off the production line in late 2018 or early 2019.

Abu Dhabi charter operator GI Aviation has taken delivery of its second Pilatus PC-12NG single-engined turboprop, and is planning to launch an aircraft management programme to broaden its fleet and service offering. GI launched services in January 2017, becoming the first commercial operator of the PC-12 in the Middle East. Patrick Gordon, general manager of the Al Bateen-based company, says the response to the Swiss-built aircraft has been mixed.

Airbus Helicopters celebrated the tenth anniversary of its Albacete factory, underlining the essential role that the Spanish plant will play as part of the company’s new industrial strategy. A ceremony also took place in Albacete by the Spanish Minister of Defence, Maria Dolores de Cospedal, who took the opportunity to sign the handover certificate for two H215s to the Spanish Air Force’s 802 Squadron/RCC Canarias as well as two HAD/E Tigers and an NH90 for the Spanish Army Airmobile Force (FAMET). Along with production sites in France and Germany, the Albacete plant will become a centre of excellence for the manufacture of major components assemblies, bringing increased quality and competitiveness as

well as long-term visibility for the industrial activity in Albacete. Tecnam Delivers First of Geospatial Platforms

Tecnam US announced it completed the delivery of the first three of an order for 30 P2006T twin engine aircraft in its Special Mission Platform (SMP) configuration. The three aircraft now delivered are part of a 24-months contract to deliver 30 SMP aircraft to a geospatial data acquisition company modernizing its fleet to optimize operational costs and sensor availability. The company has options for an additional 24 P2006T SMP aircraft following the delivery of the first 30 aircraft commitment. For this 30 aircraft contract the Tecnam SMP will be delivered with its standard, field proven, mission power system and dedicated hatch to accommodate multiple sensor packages, managed by Tecnam as Type Certification design changes. The contract also provides for additional design services from Tecnam to optimize the installation for specific sensor packages under Tecnam’s design authority and experience. ■ More information from: www.tecnam.com

Leonardo Starts Delivery of Norwegian All-Weather AW101s The first of 16 AW101 all-weather search and rescue (SAR) helicopters has been delivered to the Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Public Security.

The aircraft departed Leonardo’s Yeovil facility in November for Sola Air Base in southern Norway where the aircraft will enter a period of Operational Test and Evaluation (OT&E) before entering service with the Royal Norwegian Air Force in 2018. Aircraft deliveries will continue through to 2020 with SAR operations being established with the aircraft deployed across each of the six main operating bases. An AW101 full flight simulator was commissioned in June 2017 at Sola Airport to provide in country training for aircrew in advance of aircraft deliveries and will be used by Norwegian aircrew and third parties to provide training that will both reduce training costs and improve safety by allowing crews to practice the full range of emergency procedures. ■ More information from: www.leonardocompany.com

Swedish Police Operates Largest EU Bell 429 Fleet The Air Support Division of the Swedish National Police (SNP) ensures its aircraft are available 24/7 in case of any emergency. Operating with European Union’s largest Bell 429 fleet, this team of skilled pilots perform search and rescue and law enforcement operations. When called on by local dispatch officers, SNP cooperates with the alpine rescue service and flies through mountains to rescue missing, injured or trapped people. In a more recent emergency, the SNP supported local police with their Bell 429 during the terrorist attack in Stockholm. Australia’s First H175s Set to Touch Down

Aviation enthusiasts looked excitedly skyward as one of the world’s largest transport aircraft, the Antonov An-124, touched down at Darwin International Airport recently, carrying Babcock Australasia’s cargo of two Airbus H175 super-medium helicopters. Costing approximately $20m each, the H175 helicopters are the first of their kind to arrive in Australia, and they will be operated on contract from Dili, Timor-Leste by Babcock Offshore Services Australasia.

Milestone Provides Alidaunia two AW169s

Milestone Aviation Group Limited, the global leader in helicopter leasing, has entered an agreement to lease two AW169 helicopters to Alidaunia S.R.L. of Italy, to support its helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) in Italy.

Babcock is set to commence operations on January 1, 2018 with its contract encompassing personnel transportation, search-and-rescue support, and medevac in the Timor Sea, 310 miles northwest of Darwin.

Alidaunia has provided HEMS services in Italy for more than 20 years and Milestone is proud to bring latest technology aircraft to this service. One of the helicopters provided by Milestone is an extension of a current operating lease, and the second AW169 will be delivered from Milestone’s order book with Leonardo Helicopters in 2018.
