The AD has been issued following reports of cracking near the forward cabin doorpost, at the lower wing strut attach fitting. The cracks are the result of metal fatigue, according to the AD, and could result in the wing strut attach point failing during flight.

If the proposed AD is adopted as written, the first inspection is due at 4,000hrs and is estimated to take about 1.5hr to accomplish. The inspection must then be repeated annually or every 1,000hrs, whichever comes first. If cracks are found, the repair consists of installing a Cessna service kit to reinforce the area, which is estimated to take about 24 man-hours, at an estimated cost of $2,500-$3,000. The FAA has also issued an AD covering several Piper PA-28 models. It requires inspection of the fuel tank selector cover, to verify that the left and right fuel tank placards are positioned properly, and replacement of those which are found not to conform. Legend Cub Makes First Flight in Germany American Legend Aircraft Company announced the first flight of a Legend Cub in Germany. The Legend Cub AL3 was purchased by Jeffrey Huntoon of Trier, Germany, shipped overseas via container, and will remain N-registered for leisure flights in the European Union. Mr Huntoon holds FAA and EASA issued ATP certificates and has flown professionally for the last 32 years. His previous experience importing three other aircraft from the US and his fluency in German aided in navigating the lengthy process of flying an N-registered aircraft in Europe. He anticipates his area of operation to be Germany with occasional excursions to and over Belgium, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Switzerland and England. Following the AL3’s arrival in Germany, Mr Huntoon wasted no time re-assembling his Legend Cub. “The aircraft was expertly disassembled and containerized for shipping in Sulphur Springs, Texas. I had it reassembled and flight ready in just one weekend,” he explained. Presents the Entire Diversity of Aviation The 26th AERO will take off on April 18 to 21, 2018 with a comprehensive range of general aviation aircraft, products and services. Trade visitors will be invited to explore a new technical attraction for the first time, the Flight Simulator Area for professional pilot training. A wide selection of very diverse aircraft is at the centre of the international aviation show. The colourful palette at Lake Constance ranges from ultralight aircraft to cruising aircraft, from helicopters to business jets. The range also includes unmanned civilian drones, which are playing a larger and larger role in aviation. The e-flight-expo is also taking an increasingly prominent role. Time-tested special theme areas like the Avionics Avenue, Engine Area, Be a Pilot and AERODrones/UAS Expo are making a strong appearance, as are the rotary wing aircraft dramatically positioned in the helicopter hangar. Messe Friedrichshafen CEO Klaus Wellman and project leader Roland Bosch are optimistically looking forward to the 26th AERO. As a response to the constantly increasing relevance of electromobility, the e-flight-expo will continue to grow at the AERO 2018, said Roland Bosch, appraising the situation in advance of the expo. General aviation includes all civil aviation, with the exception of regularly scheduled and chartered airline service; it does not include military aviation. Within the European Union alone, there are more than 200,000 registered ultralights, gliders and powered aircraft. The AERO 2018 offers the largest possible diversity in the skies: The range of aircraft at the show stretches from civilian drones to ultralights, single- and multi-engine piston-driven aircraft, helicopters, gyrocopters and turboprops all the way up to jets. New aircraft engines, the most advanced avionics and aviation services and accessories will be additional focal points at the AERO 2018, as well as pilot training offers and information about further career opportunities in general aviation.

Powered Aircraft All of the established manufacturers of conventional aircraft will be presenting the broad spectrum of machines that they have on offer, starting with aircraft with piston-driven engines on up to turboprops. In addition, it will be possible to see the newest model year versions of established aircraft with a MTOW of up to two tons, such as those produced by Cirrus Aircraft, Diamond Aircraft, Piper, Pipistrel, Vulcanair, Robin and other manufacturers.

Ultralights Nowhere else is the diversity and variety of different aircraft larger than among the ultralights: there are gliders, powered aircraft and gyrocopters. In Germany, ultralight helicopters have been allowed since 2017. The trend towards ultralight gyrocopters, either with an open or a closed cockpit, also continues unabated. Numerous aircraft innovations, from sideby-side trainers up to a 330km/h (205mph) tandem seater, will be presented at Lake Constance, as will the economical 120kg machines among the ultralights. With a single engine and only one seat, they are inexpensive to buy and maintain, yet still offering pure flying pleasure.

AERO Strengthens Recruitment Segment

The e-flight-expo has long been well established and will again showcase alternative drive concepts in a hall all its own. Companies like Siemens, Bell Helicopter, Boeing and more and more startups are working on the development of electrically powered VTOL aircraft. This year, the first electrically powered taxi drones are being tried in places like Dubai and China and German manufacturers are sending their prototypes out on their first passenger flights. These efforts demonstrate the increasing significance that electric flight will hold in the future worldwide.

The lack of qualified personnel remains one of the central topics in aviation. The dynamic nature of the industry also poses an additional challenge. Correspondingly, the AERO, as the most important European trade fair for general aviation, is expanding its job fair offerings. For the first time, it has been able to secure an accomplished specialist in the recruiting field for the show: Zk professionals, a high performance service provider for Germany’s top companies, employs highly qualified specialists and industry experts at several locations across Germany. Zk professionals is exhibiting for the first time at the AERO and will be the first stop for companies that need staff in any field.

Engine Area The Engine Area at the AERO is also well-established. Once again, modern engines from a wide variety of manufacturers will be on display in their own special area, including electric, internal combustion and hybrid engines. In light of the development of efficient and unleaded fuel engines for propeller aircraft, new innovations are also expected in this area. Maintenance and engine management will also be in focus, as will alternative and sustainable developments in fuel.

Avionics Avenue Avionics Avenue is another successful special show. Here it's all about on-board equipment for aircraft and helicopters related to piloting the aircraft, navigation, collision avoidance, flight planning and communication. Although the transition period for the introduction of the new 8.33kHz radios expired in Germany on January 1, 2018, making the devices mandatory in German aircraft, other European countries such as Switzerland have extended their deadlines to change over to the new radios. This is certain to stimulate interest in avionics suppliers at the AERO.

Flight Simulator Area In 2018, the new Flight Simulator Area will make its appearance, the first at an AERO. In this area, everything will be centred around the topic of flight simulation, both in pilot training and for everyone who wants to see what it feels like to control an airplane or helicopter and get an impression of life in the cockpit. The Flight Simulator Area offers experienced VFR and IFR pilots training opportunities and the chance to fly the widest variety of aircraft in a simulator.

Business Aviation Business aviation will again be a focus of the AERO. Pistondriven aircraft, but above all turboprops and jets are at its core. Thanks to last year’s decision by EASA, the European aviation agency, to permit instrument flight of single-engine turboprops in commercial aviation, the manufacturers of these aircraft can look forward to rising order numbers. Classic twin-engine turboprops will also be on show at Lake Constance. After a few mixed years, signs suggest that stronger demand for single- and multi-engine business jets will return, strengthened by positive economic developments in the United States and Germany.

Helicopter Hangar With the special Helicopter Hangar area, rotary wing aircraft will be given increased prominence. In a series of expert presentations, the German helicopter association DHV will highlight the role of the helicopter as an important aviation workhorse. Single and multi-engine helicopters with piston as well as turbine engines are active in training, air rescue and work flights. The recent approval of the ultralight helicopter category in Germany, France and Italy has created a new gateway to the rotary wing segment, generating additional interest in it.

Be a Pilot In 2018, the successful Be a Pilot area will return, serving as a meeting place for pilots and anyone who is interested in learning to fly. According to a recent study, aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing expect strong growth to result in a need for about 245,000 pilots by 2035 among Asian airlines alone. Those interested in a career as a pilot will also be able to participate in a free, computer-supported screening process that tests the skills and capabilities essential in this field.

AERO Conferences More than 200 presentations, conferences and workshops on current aviation topics take place at the AERO Conferences. At the AERO Conferences, experts from pilots’ associations like the AOPA, regulatory authorities like the EASA and FAA, and the general aviation manufacturers’ associations GAMA and LAMA discuss and provide information about legal and political frameworks and the future of international standards in aviation. UAV Dach, the German association for unmanned vehicles, gives a series of presentations at the conferences. The schedule also includes a symposium on drones in the forestry industry, which is supported by the magazine Drohnenmagazin.

PPR Slots for Visitors Once again, a PPR slot allocation system is planned for visitors arriving in their own aircraft. Pilots can reserve slots online. This will be possible starting on Saturday, April 7 at 9am local time at www.bodensee-airport.eu. Visitors arriving at the airport without a PPR slot will be assessed a post-slot fee. Every pilot who lands at EDNY in their own aircraft will receive free admission to the AERO. As an alternative, the Markdorf glider group, in cooperation with Messe Friedrichshafen, is offering ultralights and powered gliders the opportunity to land on their field without a slot assignment during the entire AERO, from Wednesday April 18 to Saturday, April 21. Operating hours are 8am to 7pm local time. Departures are also possible on Sunday, April 22. The landing fee in Markdorf is 15 euros; a free shuttlebus travels to the AERO every half hour. Crossing the Atlantic in a Cirrus SR22 From the Pilot’s Logbook by Roger Harr

Aircraft Guaranty Corporation (AGC) impacts the lives of recreational pilots worldwide. This month, Roger Harr talks about his life changing experience crossing the Atlantic in his Cirrus SR22. AGC: It took a while to approve the Cirrus in Europe. How did this impact you? Harr: I purchased my Cirrus in 2005; it was one of the first in Europe. Cirrus was not approved for purchase until 2007 or 2008, so the only way to fly my new plane was to put it in the American Registry. That’s why I got an American license, and that’s also the reason I registered it with Aircraft Guaranty. By the time it was possible to register my Cirrus in Europe, I had no reason to change it over. In Europe, the process is much more complicated and expensive than it is in the States.

AGC: What led up to your Atlantic crossing trip? Harr: At first, I only flew the Cirrus VFR, but in 2008 I made my American IFR rating. I was lucky to have the opportunity to get my American license in France when an FAA examiner living in the UK came to France and administered the exam.

Obtaining the IFR rating opened a whole new world for me. I went through a great deal of training to achieve IFR, which made it possible for me to make longer flights and to fly in really bad weather to the minimums. Prior to this, I had flown only short distances around Switzerland or from time to time to South of France. Roger Harr

AGC: And with your IFR qualifications, you decided to make an Atlantic crossing. Harr: Yes. With these new flying abilities, the day came when I asked myself: What’s next? And for European pilots, I think the next big thing is crossing the Atlantic. In 2014, I had made my first crossing. I flew to Canada via Scotland, Iceland, and Greenland. It was such a wonderful experience that I wanted to do it once again. Last year I was my 60th birthday, and my wife and I discussed how we would celebrate. I proposed that I would like to make another Atlantic crossing. I would make a two-week trip, and I’d do it alone. Upon my return from the solo trip, my wife and I would take an airliner to Reykjavik, Iceland. We’d stay there two or three days and then board an expedition ship for a cruise to Greenland. I imagined that it would be a wonderful experience – first to see everything from the air, then to return home and go again with my wife to view the same landscapes from a ship’s perspective on earth.

AGC: What were the initial legs of your trip, and how did it go? Harr: My first leg was flying from my home base in Bern, Switzerland to Durham Tees Valley Airport in Scotland. From there I flew to Wick, which is at the very northern tip of Scotland, and I spent the first night. The second day I flew to Reykjavik, Iceland. That’s a three-and-a-half-hour flight over water. From Reykjavík, I made the crossing of the Greenland ice field to Sondrestrom Fjord. When I arrived in Sondrestrom Fjord, I checked the weather again for the next day and it was looking good. 20 PISTON BUYER EUROPE APRIL 2018

AGC: How was your trip to Canada? Harr: This is where I came upon some difficulties. Before we left, a friend of mine and I had contacted North Canada several times to see if they have avgas, which could be a big problem in the northern part of Canada. Everything seemed to be right; so, as you know, I proceeded. From Sondrestrom Fjord, I made a phone call to Aklavik in Northern Canada and no one answered the phone. I tried two other phone numbers and I wrote several emails, but I got no response, nothing at all. Then I checked the notams again. During this time, there were 16 notams in Aklavik, and I read through every one. There was, for example, one regarding the two-mile runway. It said they have construction work on one-third of it, but this is not a problem for me because you could land a Cirrus on the other two-thirds. I also read that the oneinstrument approach wouldn’t work because of construction. Also, two of the four taxiways were closed due to construction. And so on. In all of this, there was nothing that said the airport was closed. I decided to try to reach them again the next day. The next morning I tried to phone again. I wrote

several emails, but again, I did not get an answer, nothing at all. Finally, while reading through the notams, I saw that the last one was for medevac flights and medical evacuation. It said it would be possible to open the airport as long as they were informed four hours in advance. And I thought, open the airport? Is the airport closed? I checked all the notams, but there was nothing at all that mentioned the airport is closed. This prompted me to change my plans. I decided to fly to Ilulissat, which is one flying hour north of Sondrestrom Fjord.

AGC: Tell us about your arrival at Ilulissat, Greenland. Harr: I flew up to Ilulissat, and when I approached, it took my breath away. It was so beautiful; the dark blue sea and thousands of icebergs. This is where I took so many wonderful iceberg pictures. On my descent, I came close to an enormous glacier. I’ve never seen anything like it. Never in Switzerland; never even in the Alps. It was enormously huge. I flew with my left hand on the stick, and with my right hand I took pictures. I landed on the runway, and as I taxied back, I looked out of my right window, and I could see icebergs along the runway. I’ve never seen anything like this.

AGC: What is this picture with all the crosses on the ground? Harr: This is a cemetery for the people of Greenland that is on the approach path of the airport. If someone dies in Greenland, it’s required that the cemetery has a view of the ocean. It’s necessary to be situated so that the dead can look out into the ocean. It’s a wonderful place. On descent, you overfly the cemetery by 150 feet. AGC: Did you leg in and spend the night in Ilulissat? Harr: Yes. I left the plane and I found a hotel. The terrace on my room looked out over the icebergs in the ocean. I knew I wanted to stay here longer than I had planned. The next day I chartered a boat, and I went out in the ocean to take pictures of these wonderful icebergs. There are really several that are very high – some are 300 feet above sea level. That evening I tried one final time to contact Canada; again, with no luck. I decided instead to stay in Greenland longer, so I checked the long-term weather forecast to plan my flight back to Bern. According to the weather, there would have been two time windows within the next 10 days in which I could fly back across the ice pack of Greenland. One was the next day, and the other would have been on a Sunday. I know that all the airports in Greenland are closed on Sunday. I had to be back home in time to pick up my wife, go back up to Reykjavík with her, and catch our cruise ship. So, my only choice was to fly back the next day. Once again, I crossed the ice shield. It was such a wonderful day. For about two hours, you’re flying over the snow and ice, and sometimes you can’t tell

if what’s below you are clouds or ice. Suddenly when I looked out of the window I saw something dark in front of me. Coming closer I saw tips of mountains peeking out of the ice. Huge mountains! Back home after my flight, I checked it on Google Earth, and I saw that I had flown over the highest peak of Greenland. During this flight, you’re all alone there for hundreds of miles. No houses, no streets, no people. Nothing at all. After you cross the ice shield, you’re over the Atlantic once again. In the cold water, you see ice everywhere until you arrive in Reykjavík, Iceland five-and one-half hours later. It really takes your breath away, and I hope you can appreciate what an amazing trip it was. AGC: Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself? Harr: I’m a dental surgeon. We have the biggest dental clinic in Switzerland with 30 employees. As you know, I’m married. We don’t have children, but we have a dog, Charlie. He’s is an Irish soft coated wheaten Terrier and he flies a lot with us. He loves flying, and five minutes after takeoff he falls asleep. We spend every second weekend at the French Riviera. It’s a great short trip. It’s one hour-15 to one hour-20 minutes.

Blackhawk 400-Hour TBO Extension for XP140 Blackhawk Modifications announced a Time Between Overhaul (TBO) baseline extension from 3,600 hours to 4,000 hours for the Cessna Caravan XP140 Engine+ Upgrade. With this 400-hour TBO increase, the Hot Section Inspection (HSI) interval is also extended from 1,800 hours to 2,000 hours. Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) announced in Service Information Letter (SIL) #PT6A259 that these TBO and HSI extensions are retroactive, meaning that all existing PT6A-140 engines operating today can take advantage of the increases. The extended TBO and HSI intervals will allow Caravan operators to save on operating expenses with less frequent maintenance needed on the engine. In addition to the extension, TBO harmonization is also offered for operators with a mixed fleet of PT6A-114/A and PT6A-140 engines. Those with a valid P&WCrecommended TBO extension for PT6A-114/A engines may apply this recommendation to PT6A-140 engines in their fleet.

FlightSafety International and Pilatus announced that training for the new PC-24 Super Versatile Jet has begun at FlightSafety’s Learning Centre in Dallas, Texas. The Pilatus PC-24 simulator was recently qualified and approved for training by the European Aviation Safety Agency. Qualification by the United States Federal Aviation Administration occurred in December 2017.

This STC covers the IFD540 and IFD440 FMS/GPS/NAV/COMs as well as the IFD510 and IFD410 FMS/GPS standalone navigators, and allows for easy slide-in-replacement installations in Robinson helicopters that currently have legacy GNS navigators. This STC also covers green installations as well. Helicopter Operators who upgrade to the IFDs will also have the ability to add an IFD100, which is an iPad-based version of the panel-mounted IFDs that communicates via wireless and provides independent, large-screen display and control of the panelmounted system.

Pilatus PC-24 Training Underway in Dallas, Texas

GA Pilots Told to Stay Legal Private pilots planning to fly this spring and summer were urged to check they have the correct licence. From April this year, pilots flying any aircraft with European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) airworthiness certification will need an EASA licence - wherever they fly. 'EASA aircraft' include types such as PA28s, C172s and R22s. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has made clear that any pilot who does not have a valid EASA PPL or LAPL will not be able to legally fly these aircraft after the April deadline, even in the UK. This will also have an impact on aircraft insurance. The deadline is the culmination of a six-year process to switch all flight crew licences - commercial and private from domestic versions issued by national regulators such as the CAA, to EU-wide equivalents issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency.

On top of the agreement, GE Aviation will provide CVUT with access to its PREDIX software, as well as training. GE Aviation will also share its technical experience related to turboprop engine design and performance modeling. Robinson Helicopter Cargo Hook

Robinson’s R66 cargo hook installation was on display at this year’s Heli-Expo in Las Vegas. The optional cargo hook carries external loads up to 1,200lbs and, for external load operations, the R66’s maximum gross weight increases from 2,700lbs to 2,900lbs. Two installations of the hook are available: • Basic includes the cargo hook and rightseat controls allowing operations from the pilot seat only (MSRP $12,800). • Advanced includes the cargo hook, right and left-seat controls, a left-seat hydraulic switch, and a left-seat start button. A load weight gauge and a second set of engine power gauges (torque and gas temperature) are located in the left door sill allowing the pilot to monitor engine operations while keeping an eye on the external load. Provisions for remote control of external equipment (e.g., long line hook or a water dropping bucket) are also included (MSRP $28,000).
