CHOOSE YOUR AVIONICS WITH CARE, SAYS AVIDYNE Avidyne is always adding capabilities to its product line, many of which are unique and ground-breaking. BREAKING DOWN THE MOST UNIQUE FEATURES OF THE AVIDYNE IFD With so many FMS/GPS/NAV/COM options on the market it can be difficult (not to mention confusing) to know which flight management system offers the best features. Just as important, which GPS navigator best suits your flying needs and upgrade budget.

All IFDs are equipped with Avidyne’s beautiful Synthetic Vision (SVS) for improved situational awareness. SVS is fully integrated and requires no additional boxes or wires, providing 3D display of terrain, obstacles, airports, traffic and more on the IFDs. All IFD systems offer Terrain Awareness capability which can be displayed over the color-contoured terrain base map for easy pilot alerting of a potential encounter with nearby terrain.

It should be noted not all GPS navigators are built the same. Some offer more in special features and capabilities while others are more simplified and offer the basics. To help you make a truly informed decision, we thought we would break down the most unique features of the IFD5-Series and what makes this a true FMS.

For an even greater measure of safety, Forward Looking Terrain Alerting (FLTA) actively projects the aircraft’s flight track in time to determine whether a collision with terrain or obstacles is imminent. Yellow caution alerts are provided when a collision with terrain is projected within approximately 60 seconds, and red warning alerts are provided for terrain projected within approximately 30 seconds.

Hybrid Touch: Touchscreen with Knobs and Buttons

3D Traffic, Obstacles and Airport Flags

Hybrid Touch is an amalgamation of both touchscreen and knobs and buttons. This exclusive feature Is not only unique to the Avidyne IFD Series, but it is also popular among pilots. Many pilots prefer knobs and buttons for frequent pilot actions, especially in turbulent weather when touchscreen can become difficult to manage. Pilots have the capability to perform virtually all the same functions via the touchscreen interface or using the knobs and buttons. Additionally, the IFDs offer multi-touch functionalities such as pinch-zoom, map panning, and graphical flight plan editing that can be implemented using the touchscreen, or knobs and buttons, depending on the pilot’s phase of flight.

The IFD uses standard high, low, and grouping symbology clearly depict obstacles on the SVS display. 3D Traffic uses standard traffic symbology with traffic depictions indicating relative threat level by their size and relative altitude and bearing. As traffic draws nearer to you, the traffic symbols increase in size on the IFD screen with clearly depicted obstacles using color-coded threat levels based on hazard level.

SBAS/LPV Vertical Guidance Approaches As an SBAS/LPV-certified approach GPS navigator, the Avidyne IFDs meet the equipment performance and functional requirements to conduct RNP terminal departure, arrival, and approach procedures. This feature allows pilots to enjoy coupled Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance (LPV) Approaches and it has never been easier. The Avidyne IFDs provide automatic flight control guidance to a robust list of certified autopilots, navigation indicators and EFIS systems. And, for turbine aircraft equipped with legacy EFIS flight decks such as Collins Proline 21 and Honeywell Primus 1000, the IFD system offers Avidyne’s exclusive GPS Legacy Aviation System (GLAS) software capability which enables full LPV approach capability without the need of external LRUs or costly upgrades to the integrated flight deck. GLAS provides a simple-to-install method enabling legacy pre-WAAS EFIS flight decks to fly GPS approaches with vertical guidance. It offers different configurations appropriate for most legacy EFIS flight decks. IFDs provide approved ADS-B position data as well as being the least expensive, quickest, and most functional way to add LPV capability to these legacy EFIS aircraft.

Worldwide Electronic Charts and Airport Diagrams The IFD5-Series includes Electronic Approach Charts & Airport Diagrams. Utilising Jeppesen’s Jeppview charts subscription services, which provides worldwide approach charts and a database of over 6,000 airport diagrams, most of which are geo-referenced, the IFD allows for the display of your own-ship and flight-plan position right on the chart or airport diagram.

Integrated Bluetooth & WiFi: Access ForeFlight, SkyDemon, and the IFD100 App for iPad Avidyne’s IFD GPS navigators are the only flight management systems in aviation that offer both built-in Bluetooth and WiFi. This unique feature allows you to connect your IFD to your iPad to provide access to thirdparty EFBs like ForeFlight and, most recently, SkyDemon, Europe’s most popular VFR planning app. Pilots also gain access to Avidyne’s exclusive IFD100 App for iPad. The IFD100 App mirrors all functions of the IFD and acts as an additional instance. You can edit your flight plan, monitor your map for traffic (with SkyTrax600 TAS or SkyTrax ADS-B In solutions), and view pages independently. The IFD and IFD100 App are cross-synced, meaning tasks you perform on one platform will automatically be updated on the other. The IFD100 App for iPad is a free download available on the Apple App Store.
