DYNAMIC PROPELLER BALANCING Maintaining dynamic propeller balance is a vital factor in optimizing an airplane’s service life. Strict guidelines determine tolerances for optimal performance and safe operation. Even with regular maintenance and attention to these limits, the dynamic components for a propeller system can become imbalanced. Small balance issues can quickly stack up to create errors that affect the aircraft engine, propeller, and even airframe.

Propeller Balance and Vibration An unbalanced propeller system, including the spinner assembly, can cause vibration that is detectable through testing or even in-cabin by the flight crew. While annoying, the noise and movement transmitted by these vibrations are the least of the problems that can manifest. Catastrophic damage to the engine power train and other airframe components can also occur if the imbalance isn’t addressed properly. Numerous minor issues, such as cracked sheet metal, persistent avionics failures, thrown belts, and excessive light bulb failures can be corrected by balancing. Fixing dynamic propeller balance is vital to every aircraft’s longevity.

Fixing Dynamic Propeller Balance While not a universal “fix-it” for eliminating vibration, its effects can often be reduced through propeller smoothing and balancing of the propeller assembly. Dynamic trim balancing may also help improve some vibration due to unbalanced components. If an aircraft or its engine is already in poor shape, however, balancing won’t help as the parts may be too old, worn, and in need of replacement. It is still important, though, to perform routine testing for propeller balance, and not just when an issue is reported, in order to avoid future problems. ACES analyzers make it easy to perform Dynamic Propeller Balance testing for quick adjustments and more complex balance jobs.

The ACES Advantage The ACES Model 2021 Cobra II Analyzer is the most economical solution for the mechanic or FBO in need of a propeller balancer system that delivers consistent, accurate performance. However, the complete line of ACES analyzers can also be used for propeller balancing. Our versatile propeller balancers have a range of applications and are

compatible with nearly any aircraft, from the smallest homebuilt to large commercial airframes. Even the most compact analyzers in the ACES Systems product line display our signature ease of use. Each offers lightweight portability, and powerful processing features that enable convenient precision testing.

About ACES Systems We believe in safety. Our engineers and A&P mechanics have been working for more than 25 years to provide industry-leading aviation vibration analysis and portable vibration balancing equipment to the fixed-wing and helicopter aviation industry. Our fixed-wing and helicopter track and balance equipment greatly increase the safety and performance of aviation vehicles. We are the knowledge leader and trusted partner to global industrial customers, providing simple solutions to complex problems in commercial, business, general and military aviation industries.

Diamond in the Sky Behind every Diamond product there are people that help customers’ dreams take flight. One such example is Fanni Pajer, who works as a pilot in Diamond’s Flight Operations Team (and is the Governor of the Austrian section of the Ninety Nines). Learn more about the lady that is living the dream of a life above the clouds. About Fanni Born in East Germany, Fanni emigrated to Hungary with her family as a child and at the age of fifteen finally settled in Austria. Originally, her dream was to study journalism, but life had different plans for her. Capable of speaking five languages, she started a career as a flight attendant at Austrian airline Lauda Air and worked her way up to a Senior Cabin Attendant. That was the time she first entered a cockpit — and was immediately fascinated by all the instruments. Her pilot colleagues – at that time around 99% men – quickly realised her ambitions and started motivating her to become a pilot herself. Those were still the times, Fanni says, where she as a woman thought that this would be impossible. A lot of common myths came into her mind – for example that she was not great at maths or technical subjects. But her colleagues said “Stop it, you can do it! Just try it!” During a stop-over in Stockholm they took her to fly the Boeing 737 flight simulator, and Fanni was hooked. She wanted to become a pilot. So in 2004 she decided to take five weeks off to dive deeper into the aviator’s life by trying to fly small airplanes as a first step in the USA. Well, that was the plan. At the end of this five weeks she passed her PPL at record speed at Phoenix East Aviation Flight School in Florida. She’s still surprised how she was able to do that. With the PPL under her belt, she returned to Austria, quit her job as a flight attendant, caught her then five-year old daughter and moved to Florida for one and a half years to pursue her training. As a single mom, it wasn’t always easy, but she managed to succeed with her little family. Her ATPL she did in Oslo, Norway and immediately landed a job at German airline AirBerlin as a pilot of an Airbus 320. That was 2007.

Q&A with Fanni

But Fanni always wanted to go back to Austria, especially as her daughter was growing older and starting school. So they moved back after just six months. Fanni did her flight instructor rating and Cessna Citation type rating and began working at an Austrian flight school, based at LOAN airport in Wiener Neustadt. Yes, that’s where the headquarters of Diamond Aircraft is located, and that’s where she got to know the company better. For seven years she worked as a Citation co-pilot and as a flight instructor in Austria. With her now teenage daughter being at a boarding school for highperformance sports, faraway lands were calling again, and she left for a job as ground and flight instructor at a Jordanian flight school, followed by one year at CAE Oxford in England, where she was responsible for the EasyJet MPL program. In 2017 the aviatrix had her second child and went on maternity leave. In 2018 she was recruited by Emirates Flight Training in Dubai. Meanwhile having married, her husband was there to support her, went on maternity leave himself, and moved with his wife and child to Dubai. Though Fanni was very happy with her job, she started thinking of moving back to Austria again. That’s when the MEBAA Business Aviation Show took place and she met Diamond employees telling her that Diamond Austria was looking for someone in their Flight Operations department, and that she could fit with her multifaceted know-how. Fanni applied and landed the job in 2019. Today, after becoming a pilot at the age of 28, she is looking back at 3,000 flight hours on many different airplanes, of which 2,000 she has flown as a flight instructor.

HOW MANY AIRPLANE TYPES HAVE YOU FLOWN? Oh, a lot - let me count. As for multi-engine planes there are the Airbus 320, Citation C525, DA42, DA62, Seminole, Seneca, Golden Eagle and Twin Otter. Singles I have flown include Aquila, Katana, DA40, Extra 300, Cessna 152, 172 and 182 as well as the 210. Yes, and the fabulous DA50 RG. So, I’ve flown about 17 different aircraft.

WHAT ARE YOUR DAY-TO-DAY RESPONSIBILITIES AT DIAMOND AIRCRAFT AND WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT WORKING FOR THE COMPANY? Every day is different. I’ll have to cope with tasks I didn’t experience before. It’s always exciting and never gets boring. And that’s what I love the most about my work at Diamond. From ferry flights and working at air shows to demonstration tours and customer handovers, as well as customer training. I’m getting to know so many different places, people and cultures all over the world. The diversity of the job, all the different challenges, the international environment, the work with all these state-of-the-art aircraft — my job at Diamond is just a perfect fit to me. I couldn’t image any better job. I would keep on doing it until my retirement.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FLIGHT? That is easy. That was in 2009 or 2010 to Telluride in Colorado during a flight trip across the US with friends in a DA40. If you know Telluride, then you know why. The airstrip is on 9,000 ft sea level. The highest commercial airport in the US.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT AT DIAMOND AIRCRAFT? An absolutely fantastic and exciting DA62 ferry flight from our facility in China to Diamond Austria. I flew all the way alone and learned so much I didn’t know before. The language barrier was definitely a challenge.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST FLIGHT AS A PILOT? This was my first solo flight in Florida at New Smyrna Beach with a Cherokee Warrior. OMG was I excited.

A LOT IS CHANGING IN TERMS OF ‘WOMEN IN AVIATION’. STILL, IT’S A MALE DOMINATED INDUSTRY. SO, DID YOU EXPERIENCE ANY STRUGGLES AND CHALLENGES DURING AND AFTER HAVING FINISHED YOUR PILOT’S LICENSE FROM A FEMALE PERSPECTIVE? Yes, quite a bit. Not during training, but with airline selections. Imagine, you are young, a pilot, a flight instructor and a woman and then there are mainly men and a good portion of them much older than you. First thought is ‘Woah, looks like I am the exception here’. So yes, I heard the one or the other thing typical for male dominated industries. WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING IN A MALEDOMINATED ENVIRONMENT? You experience all kind of things. From admiration to people being less happy to see a woman flying. People are mainly impressed how women manage multiple tasks – children, household, career. Through support within the family and women’s networks, more and more women succeed in maledominated environments.

DO PASSENGERS REACT DIFFERENTLY TO A FEMALE PILOT? Yes, they absolutely do. Most of the times they are very positive and interested. WHAT DO YOU THINK, HOW CAN WOMEN BE MORE ACCEPTED IN A MALE DOMINATED PILOT INDUSTRY? Be authentic and speak up. An experienced female pilot once told me - ’The aircraft doesn’t know if it’s a female or male hand controlling it. Equal qualifications should give equal the chances’. Although I think there is still a long way to go, you can see that more and more companies are sensitive about this topic. YOU ARE A MEMBER OF THE NINETY-NINES INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF WOMEN PILOTS. HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? I joined the Arabic Section of the Ninety-Nines in 2015 during my time at the Jordanian flight school. One of the former employees, the Governor of the Arabic Section, hired me – so to speak. I was immediately drawn into this women power in the Middle East. Just incredible, all of them are such powerful female pilots. Two years later I was asked if I wanted to lead the Austrian Section. It was just a no-brainer and I have been the Governor since then.

DO YOU HAVE AN AVIATION HERO? Yes, Nivedita Bashin, the youngest woman commercial commander of a jet in the world, at Air India. Historywise she is a fascinating pioneer. We are talking about the 1960’s. I met her at the Ninety Nines. She is incredibly inspiring and motivating and a great friend.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT BEING A NINETY-NINE? I love everything about the social networking and wonderful mentoring you can experience as a woman in aviation at the Ninety-Nines. It’s such a safe place to exchange experiences about the difficulties of being a woman in the aviation industry. Each year we gather at an international meeting in a different country. We have been to Petra in Jordan, Cairo, Malawi, and Tanzania. You meet so many inspiring women. I can definitely recommend every girl or woman out there working in aviation to join this great organisation.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FLYING DESTINATION? In Europe I love Mali Losinj, Croatia. My choice for the rest of the world would be Key West, Florida, USA. Both because of the very special scenery – fascinating runways next to the water with challenging slopes. Just very exciting approaches. Always makes my heart beat faster.

ANY ADVICE OR WISE WORDS TO FUTURE FEMALE AVIATORS? Just go for it. If you want to be it, go for it. As I said, be authentic and speak up.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE AIRPORT? Vienna. As it always means coming home. Everything about my job is beautiful and it’s a lot of fun, but coming home is always something special.

Fanni’s Top-5 Choices

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE DIAMOND AIRCRAFT? The DA62. She’s looking great, is incredibly comfy, classy, beautifully finished and just a dream to fly. The DA62 would be the aircraft I would buy for myself. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF FLYING ADVICE GIVEN TO YOU? First fly the aircraft. In every sense, no matter which flight situation you are in, concentrate on flying the aircraft. Aviate, Navigate, Communicate! WHAT'S THE ONE THING YOU ALWAYS PACK FOR EVERY FLIGHT? A Ladybag, the sister of TravelJohn. Just Google it! Source: https://www.diamondaircraft.com/ en/about-diamond/newsroom/

They are also an aircraft ferry company, delivering small aircraft around the globe. I must, however, fund my attempt entirely myself with the help of sponsors. I hope to make aviation accessible to the audience and inspire new generations of pilots. To encourage young people, particularly women, to follow their dreams both in the air and on the ground.

I will mostly achieve this aim through TikTok, where I will make funny/interesting content to get young people interested in aviation. I am planning to have schoolchildren meeting me at every stop to ask questions and see the plane!

I am looking for sponsors and partners.

AVIDYNE IFD100 APP FOR iPAD IS “A MUST HAVE FOR VFR PILOTS” Mike Salmon, Avidyne Pilot Support Representative, explains… Avidyne has always been on the cutting edge of innovation in the general aviation market. It began more than 25 years ago when they introduced the first standalone 12.7 cm Multifunction Display. This continued when they were the first to certify Big Glass Integrated Flight Decks back in 2003. Avidyne’s long history of listening to the needs of pilots continues today with their flagship IFD FMS/GPS/NAV/COM and exclusive IFD100 app for iPad.

IFD100 App: Affordable Big Glass for Your Cockpit The IFD100 app, a free download from the App Store, acts as a remote control for your panel-mounted IFD GPS navigator. The IFD100 mirrors the functions of the IFD from the iPad allowing the pilot to control the IFD GPS navigator in real-time. Imagine having another glass screen in your cockpit at no additional cost. The pilot can conveniently change frequencies, display additional pages, enter flight plans, and view charts from the iPad via integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity within the IFD FMS/GPS/NAV/COM. For the VFR pilot, the IFD100 app provides ultimate situational awareness and functionality. Furthermore, the app uses the same page-and-tab interface as the IFD which means there is very little to no additional learning curve.

Jeppesen Charts on the IFD100 The IFD100 is not just for the VFR pilot. Many instrument-rated pilots take advantage of the ability to view their Jeppesen charts on their IFD100 app; even if they own the mighty, but more compact IFD 4-Series GPS navigators. Adding charts to your Jeppesen subscription allows you to easily review approaches and plan your departure and arrival on IFD100 with ease. Like the IFD 5-Series, IFD100 will overlay your GPS position right on the chart for better situational awareness both in the air and on the taxiway.

Bigger Maps With the IFD100 app, the pilot can get a much bigger picture of their surroundings. A bigger screen means you can easily view terrain, traffic, and weather on the iPad through the wireless connection, from an egocentric and exocentric view. Avidyne’s IFD550 allows the pilot to view the pitch and bank angles on IFD100 from the IFD550’s internal Attitude Reference Sensor (ARS) from the SVS tab; just as you would on your IFD.

Split-screen Functionality If your iPad allows for the use of split-screen mode, you can run the IFD100 app simultaneously with and your favorite flying app together, on the same screen. While in landscape mode, configure the iPad for Split-screen and enjoy the benefit of your favorite aviation app (ForeFlight, SkyDemon, etc.) alongside IFD100 for ultimate control and enhanced situational awareness. As an Avidyne Pilot myself, I can attest to the amazing features of the IFD product line, the IFD100 app, and the innovation Avidyne continues to serve global aviation community. In my opinion, there is no other navigator on the market as feature-rich and easy to use than the Avidyne IFD Series of GPS/NAV/COMs.

For additional features of the IFD100 App and the IFD-Series FMS/GPS/NAV/COM visit avidyne.com or email: sgubbins@avidyne.com for more information.

“Avidyne’s IFD440 unit provides the functionality I require as a private VFR/IFR pilot. The interface is intuitive, easy to learn with excellent functionality. I’m particularly impressed with the interoperability between IFD100 app, SkyDemon, and PilotAware which allows me to operate all of my devices on one (WiFi) network, from which I can share flight plans and receive active traffic awareness.” -Johnathan Tully, UK Cessna 177B

What’s Going On With Round-The-World Flights?

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE ! Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”

ABOUT E&G AVIATION INSURANCE

E&G Aviation Insurance is a leading aviation insurance broker specialising in insurance liability business cover including professional indemnity; cover for buildings including hangars and workshops; and for aircraft whether operating commercially, privately, or for training. It is a trading name of Export & General Insurance Services Limited (E&G), Beverley Meads Recreation Ground, Barham Road, Copse Hill, Wimbledon, SW20 0ET UK. For further information please contact

Chris Varley, Director, Export & General Insurance Services Ltd T: +44 (0)20 8255 0617 M: +44 (0) 7973 509961 E: chris.varley@exportandgeneral.co.uk

The insurance industry prides itself on being able to cover various risks and that includes for exciting, challenging flying trips. It would be a shame to see such adventurous activities discouraged as long as they are well organised and executed. However according to Chris Varley of Export & General (E&G), recent experience has shown him that cover is almost impossible to secure from underwriters for these trips. Those who arranged cover in 2019 and have just been waiting

www.exportandgeneral.co.uk

to set off, perhaps being delayed by Covid-19, should be OK. But for others, they could struggle to get insured. Although Chris is always happy to try to secure insurance, his explanation is that the market doesn’t see aviation as having an attractive risk-return profile. "But it also has a lot to do with Brexit and uncertainties over regulation,” he stresses. "Let’s hope sentiments change and more capacity comes in to cover aviation risks again."

Catching the Bug — Classic Aircraft

At some point during every pilot or enthusiast’s journey, an image of aircraft is left ingrained; the shape, maybe a sound, or that feeling through your chest as an engine roars past. It is literally attached to your primary senses.

horse racing). And following the limitations imposed during 2020 and early 2021, it’s somewhat likely that the almost palatable forthcoming shows are going to be some of the best yet.

Is it from that seed that this maybe questionable attraction, or perhaps ‘addiction’, grows? What is it that draws such a contrast of people back time and time again to be near an aircraft like a Spitfire. To many there is the history, the sacrifice, and the determination that many of these aircraft represent from their unspoken presence. For others it’s the wonder of engineering, the might of its power or grace, or just the sheer splendour of seeing a work of art take to the sky. Certainly Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee Jr captured the spirit of flight so eloquently in his well-known poem ‘High Flight’ (time for a quick pause and Google search if you’re not familiar!).

So having discussed some of the ‘why’, what about some of the ‘how’ and ‘where’? If you’ve read this far down the page you very likely already agree there’s a desire for vintage aircraft to be accessible. So ‘how’ is this possible? Generally, this is achieved in two main cabinets, 1) museums and 2) private collections. Both are actually essential for the long-term preservation of these aircraft and both typically provide amazing access to the general public.

See, Smell, Touch & Feel Whatever it is, it’s alive more today than perhaps ever before. Is that odd given the further we move into the future the more endangered these aircraft become in the wake of life? Is the increasing rarity part of the pull towards them? For me, it’s all of these things. And more! I’m definitely addicted. And I’ll throw those last two missing senses into the mix as well; Yep, I’m not ashamed to say it — I love the smell!! and I’ll add to that; I’m partial to the ‘touch’, or the ‘feel’ of an aircraft as well, whether flying it or just reaching out to make contact, it’s a form of connection I guess, to the history and the story of that specific aircraft. During 2019 some 4.9 million people attended air shows in the UK. That makes them the third largest outdoor activity in the UK! (After football and

22 HISTORIC AIRCRAFT EUROPE AUGUST 2021

Most of the aircraft flying in the display circuit are generously provided for by private owners, many of which don’t fly themselves but love to see the aircraft flown and indeed enjoy playing their part in the ‘future history’ of the aircraft. But, likewise, the market is wide and available to many. As a pilot, you don’t have to be at the controls of a Mustang to still ‘feel’ a classic and historic aircraft in the palms of your hand. One of the most memorable flights I’ve ever had was my first tailwheel solo in a Chipmunk out of Goodwood at sunset on a cold December afternoon. My instructor nearly froze to death watching from the club house, but oh my word what a view I had as I looked down the wing onto a golden horizon with a shaft of light pealing up the wing as I turned onto base leg. The aircraft was in RAF markings and that view of the RAF roundel felt almost timeless. It really was a very special circuit indeed. Then there’s the Harvard and T-28 Trojan, two amazing aircraft. The T-28 has near Mustang performance! I was lucky enough to be in a close formation filming sequence (as a passenger) whilst filming Richard Grace’s beautiful Mk. IX Spitfire ML407. “Truly A-mazing”!

Hurricanes), I find myself ‘dabbling’ in Warbirds still today. This time working with two great friends; Richard Grace and Andy Durston.

Warbirds and ‘TASC Vintage’ So how did this piece of editorial come about? This connection to vintage aircraft and in particular ‘Warbirds’ has been, to me, somewhat part of life. I grew up around a Warbird hunter by the name of Jim Pearce. He found, recovered, and researched over 60 WWII aircraft crashed in Northern Siberia. Most of which were untouched, even unseen, for 50+ years. He wondered through the Eastern Front wilderness of Russia himself and brought most of them back via the UK. They were then assessed, identified, and delivered on to museums and private collections around the world.

After several years talking about it we finally knocked ourselves into a team of three and formed ‘TASC Vintage’. A company specialising in vintage aircraft, with a heavy focus on the specialist area of Warbirds. Each of us have a passion for these aircraft.

A number of these aircraft are now on premiere public display or even flying! That man was my grandfather. And from as young as I can remember, that was my aviation ‘norm’. Since then and many aircraft later (including two squadrons of

Next month, if all goes to plan, we’ll be unveiling the 109’s counterpart (ok – so that’s an easy guess!). But it’s not just any one; this is a very special one indeed and is currently off the radar… so tune in to the next issue for more!

The HA-1112 type first took flight from Seville in Spain on 2nd March 1945 as a licence-built Messerschmitt Bf 109G-2, but production struggled due to a lack of supplies from Germany. In May 1951, an armed version nicknamed the ‘Tripala’ (after it’s three bladed prop) went into service with the Spanish forces powered by its Hispano engine. In 1954 the ‘Buchon’ (meaning a male dove) was born following the addition of a roaring Merlin engine and Rotol propeller. The Bouchon carried two 22 mm cannons and two eight-packs of 80 mm rockets and remained in active service until December 1965. The Buchon carries a striking resemblance to the infamous Messerschmitt 109 from which it was conceived, making it a very popular aircraft on the display circuit (worldwide). This particular Buchon also claims its film star status having starred in the critically acclaimed film ‘the Battle of Britain’!

So for the next few issues we would like to share a selection of interesting aircraft we’re associated with. The first of which takes flight in the infamous, perhaps menacing shape of an ME109!

JG52 September 1941 “White 9”. This was the scheme of Luftwaffe Ace UFFZ Edmund “Paule” Roβmann, one of the most respected leaders in JG52. ‘Paule’ flew in the Battle of Britain before transferring to Russia. In July 1943 he landed behind enemy lines in an attempt to rescue a fellow pilot but was captured. By the end of the war he had scored 93 victories and had been awarded the Knight’s Cross.

History Built in Tablada, Seville, in Spain in 1958, S/N 145 served with the Spanish Air Force until 1965 (reg C4K-105).

In 1968, this aircraft flew in the famous movie ‘the Battle of Britain’. After filming it was sold to a well known collector in the USA and went into storage. In 2015 it finally resurfaced and was sold and shipped to the UK and restored by Air Leasing Ltd. The first flight following restoration took place in June 2018.

AERIAL CINEMATOGRAPHY The Hollywood Stars of Aerial Work Aviation

www.fred-north.com

Some of the most famous blockbuster movies and TV scenes in history have come from the air. The high vantage point that you and I rarely see in day-to-day life creates a unique experience for any viewer. So, what is this cinematography wonder, and what they do? If you want to know, Patrick Ryan will walk you through the ‘Storyboard’ of what Aerial Cinematography is and how they make cinema magic. Aerial Cinematography has long been a pinnacle of cinema and TV. Its capability to capture a film’s subject matter within a majestic landscape or bring viewers to unbelievable locations is instantly recognisable to anyone familiar with motion pictures, TV shows, commercials, and documentaries. Today, the Aerial Cinematography sector is a critical part of the overall cinematography industry with it a high level of technical sophistication and talent. At some point in production, a filming operation will require an aircraft to capture imagery or support other elements of the moviemaking process.

THE ART OF AERIAL CINEMATOGRAPHY

As a term, Aerial Cinematography is a filming technique that uses the full spectrum of aircraft to gain an elevated perspective. It allows filmmakers to access entirely new domains from previously inaccessible vantage points to film large-scale environments and achieve stunning and dramatic visual storytelling cost-effectively. By Tradition, aerial cinematography shoots stunning ‘shots’ and dramatic action scenes, and has been long used in action films. However, aerial filming has revolutionised other cinematography fields such as nature films, drama series, and documentaries in recent years. Because of this,

WIR SPRECHEN DEUTSCH - ASTRID AYLING: +44 (0)208 549 5024 - Astrid@avbuyer.com

it has become a prolific television, advertisement, and cinematic technique used in nearly every feature presentation you see on the ‘Big Screen’ or your TV, computer, or smartphone.

ONCE UPON A TIME

So, when did Aerial Cinematography enter the scene? Like with so many Aerial Work aviation sectors, the Aerial Cinematography sector started in aviation history right after the First World War. With a surplus of military aircraft and out-of-work pilots and the expansion of the relatively young motion picture industry, it allowed both industries to

connect and utilise a new means of providing a unique perspective for visually telling a story. By the 1920s, both the aviation and motion picture industry started to flourish in Southern California or, better yet, ‘Hollywood’. Due to the predictable sunny weather of the Los Angeles area, both the aviation sector and the movie industry flourished. Because of this fortuitous situation, aviation was quickly embraced by many top Hollywood producers and directors. Between the World Wars, most Aerial Cinematography projects consisted of filming aircraft dog-fights or aerial stunt scenes. The kit Aerial Cinematography aircrew operated consisted of the hand-held, hand-cranked camera until the modern spring/motorised cameras were invented and hard mounted on aircraft, including on the old waist gunner turrets. Up to the Second World War there were few advancements in Aerial Cinematography. However, after the Second World War and the introduction of the helicopter, the sector expanded both in capabilities and options for aerial camera crews, producers and directors to create new scenes. Fast-forwarding to today, the introduction of unmanned aircraft has yet again expanded the capabilities and options for both the Aerial Cinematography and the film industry. Unmanned aircraft or drones have opened new airspace at unique flying levels or in enclosed spaces that allow filmmakers to reach fresh perspectives.

THE TRICKS OF THE TRADE

When it comes to what the Aerial Cinematography sector specialises in, it’s more than just filming from an aircraft (Camera Ship). Many more unique services are associated with flying and filming that “doesn’t meet the eye.” Scan the Aerial Cinematography industry sector and you’ll see that this Aerial Work community provides numerous vital services that parallel the process of development, preproduction, production, post-production, and distribution of a film. Here are just a few of these unique services that support this process:

Location Scouting (Aerial Reconnaissance) Location scouting or aerial reconnaissance is a vital process in the pre-production stage of filmmaking. Besides looking for an aesthetic ‘location’ for filming, location scouting determines everything from the feasibility of logistics and access for filming. Because of the advantages of aircraft, especially fixed-wing and helicopters, Location Scouts, with the support of Aerial Cinematographers, can cover vast distances and changing geography versus trekking or driving for hours to find the perfect site. Aerial Stunt Operations On the dangerous but thrilling side of movies and film making, the Aerial Cinematography sector provides aerial stunt coordination and production for high-altitude flying to low-level, high-speed aerial stunt operations. The typical stunts range from rappelling from helicopters, lowlevel air-to-air formation flying, skydiving, or jumping from an aircraft. Plus, conducting stunts over congested areas, explosions, and flying near fast-moving ground vehicles. Cast, Crew & Equipment Transportation The production of a film is not as simple as the wellchoreographed and edited film you just watched. The logistics involved in producing a film are complex and intense, and bringing many separate parts together while keeping the project on-time and on-budget is challenging. To manage this, many producers and directors rely on Aerial Cinematography firms to arrange the transportation of cast, crew, and equipment from virtually anywhere to the desired film location. Thus, air transportation becomes critical in mitigating the risk of standard travel delays or, better yet, flying over bureaucratic obstacles, rough terrain (and even rush-hour traffic) to minimise any delays to the project — perhaps with the aim of achieving the ‘Premiere’ date. Aircraft Prop & Interior Filming (Story or Picture Ship Operations) Besides flying and filming, the Aerial Cinematography sector also supports the filming industry with props and settings. When it comes to the need for aviation and aircraft background settings, Aerial Cinematography firms coordinate specific aircraft for background scenes or interior sets (e.g., historic aircraft, cockpits, passenger

34 AERIAL WORK EUROPE AUGUST 2021

cabins, etc.). On top of that, Aerial Cinematography firms even coordinate the filming of movie scenes in airport terminals, hangars, control towers, airport ramps, and runways.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

Regarding the ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ of Aerial Cinematography, the aircraft, cameras, and other leadingedge technology make it technologically happen! As for Aircraft, Aerial Cinematography leverages many different types of aircraft based on the expected filming perspective and outcomes. However, if you were to generally rank-order the preferred aircraft utilised in filming it would perhaps start with helicopters first, unmanned aircraft second, fixed-wing aircraft third, and Lighter Than Air (LTA) platforms following in small numbers. Helicopters On the helicopter side of Aerial Cinematography, helicopters are perfect for mid- to low-altitude observations with high-resolution cameras. In addition, helicopters are most cost-effective when covering large local areas. Plus, the maneuverability of helicopters makes it easy for these platforms to film in congested urban areas or remote locations where drones and fixed-wing aircraft are not as effective or efficient. Some of the preferred helicopters utilised by leading aerial filming firms, and their possible roles, are: • Robinson Helicopter Company, R44 – Location Scouting and Camera Ship • Bell Helicopter, Bell 212 – Camera Ship, Transportation, Stunts, and Aircraft Prop • Eurocopter, AS 350 Squirrel – Camera Ship, Transportation, Stunts, and Aircraft Prop • Bell Helicopter, Bell UH-1 Iroquois – Aircraft Prop (historical settings & scenes)

Fixed Wing fixed-wing aircraft are efficient when used for highaltitude and high-speed work. Therefore, fixed-wing platforms are used heavily in filming high-speed scenes (e.g., filming other high-flying fast jets, etc.), prop sets, and transportation. Some of the types of fixed-wing aircraft used in Aerial Cinematography are: • Cessna, C-172 – Camera Ship • Lockheed, T-33 Shooting Star – Camera Ship (high-speed air-to-air filming) • Gulfstream Aerospace, Gulfstream V – Transportation and Aircraft Prop • Douglas, DC-3 – Aircraft Prop (historical settings & scenes) • Airbus, A318 – Transportation and Aircraft Interior Prop Set Unmanned Aircraft (Drones) As mentioned before, drones provide a new point of view for the filming industry. The perspectives from low altitudes or the open areas of confined spaces (e.g., warehouses, castles, etc.) are often attainable with unmanned aircraft. Their affordability also makes them a frequent choice of aircraft. Furthermore, drones are versatile and can pull the viewer in close range at wideangle, giving the audience intimate scenes. The category of drones used spans across fixed-wing, rotor-wing to LTA aircraft. Given that most unmanned aircraft used in Aerial Cinematography operations are rotor-wing platforms, the distinction of how they're used relative to manned helicopters is different. Besides the significant lift and flight endurance differences between the two types of platforms, camera helicopters are preferred by directors for the "man-in-the-loop" and in-the-air shots while creating visually exciting scenes simultaneously. On the other hand, drones provide the staple of critical and ancillary production imagery.

According to Fred North, a leading motion picture helicopter pilot. "When filming, a camera helicopter is creating the action vs. drones telling the action, and drones produce approved pre-planned shots when camera helicopters produce magic and instinctive shots on the go. So often, the Hollywood Industry calls us the "the human drone," even though drones are flying higher than us in the camera helicopter." Primarily as a Camera Ship, some of the preferred unmanned platforms that are utilised indoors or outdoors on filming projects are: • Freefly Systems, Alta 8 – Camera Ship (Heavy Lift) • xFoldRig, Dragon X12 – Camera Ship (Heavy Lift) • Freefly, Astro - Camera Ship (Light lift) • LTA Orbs & Blimps – Camera Ship (Light to Heavy Lift)

Cameras & Kit Relating to the cameras and technical gear the Aerial Cinematography community leverages to turn a basic airframe into a Hollywood studio, the industry relies on very specialised systems designed explicitly for cinematography. Plus, the Aerial Cinematographers have adapted new capabilities from other Aerial Work sectors, e.g., Airborne Law Enforcement and Aerial Surveillance, etc., to enhance their filming and production abilities. Here is a sample of the camera and supporting systems the Aerial Cinematography sector operate: • Shotover/Churchill Navigation, Shotover K1 – FixedWing and Helicopter mounted 3D camera • Axsys Technologies, HD Cineflex V14 - Fixed-Wing and Helicopter mounted HD & SD Camera • ARRI, Alexa Mini – Heavy Lift Drone mounted Large Format (LF) Camera • XM2 Pursuit, Romeo + Juliet – Fixed-Wing and Helicopter mounted Downlink System • Spectrolab, SX-16 Nightsun – Helicopter mounted Illumination/Search Light

THE STARS OF AERIAL FILMING – THE AERIAL CAMERA CREW

Even though every blockbuster film has its superstars, the real stars, when leveraging Aerial Cinematography, are the men and women who blend aviation with the art of cinematography. They know the capabilities of aircraft, camera systems, and the art of filming. They know that getting ‘the Right Shot’ is the mission, and their expert aviation professional talents are part of delivering the best picture. Though filming from the air or the ground is deeply exciting and rewarding, it requires specific skills and a lot of talent to get the right shot. Even though the Aerial Cinematography sector is supported by many types of highly skilled professionals that ensure filming is safe and successful, here are two of those professions that are either the core of operations or bring a unique aspect to filming from the air:

Cinematography or Camera Pilot (Manned & Unmanned Aircraft) Without a doubt, Camera Pilots fly the aircraft that carries the aerial camera or aerial camera crew. Together they shoot the aerial sequences that form part of the finished feature film. As mentioned before, Camera Pilots are also responsible for flying any aircraft that appear as action props. Their duties may involve performing difficult stunts requiring a high degree of expertise. Additionally, Camera Pilots may also perform aerial unit director roles, scout for locations, work out aerial action sequences using models and storyboards, and direct these sequences from the back of the aircraft or piloting. Furthermore, the Camera Pilot may also carry out the duties of the aerial coordinator, which include performing more logistical tasks such as finding suitable aircraft and crew within a given budget and schedule.

Aerial Camera Operator (Airborne Sensor Operator) Besides taking the ‘shot’, the Aerial Camera Operator works with directors and the Camera Pilot to determine all aspects of shots. Like the Camera Pilot, the Aerial Camera Operator provides practical and creative input to scene planning as well as selecting, assembling and positioning equipment (cameras, mounts, software, etc.) Moreover, to take the ‘shot’, Aerial Camera Operators are also aircrew members. Along with the Camera Pilot, they participate in the basics of each flight (e.g., aviate, navigate, and communicate) and ensure every aspect of each flight is safe and accident-free.

SUMMARY

Now you know, Aerial Cinematography is genuinely a part of the ‘Cast & Crew’ of the filming industry and the Aerial Work aviation community. Like other Aerial Work aviation sectors, Aerial Cinematography consists of talented professionals and technical systems supporting film producers and directors in delivering eye-catching views and perspectives. Since the beginning of both the motion picture and the aviation industry’s introduction and expansion, Aerial Cinematography has been right there ‘on-set.’ Aerial Cinematography has grown beyond just Camera Ship duties but supporting many other functions within the filming process. When it comes to the future and the world demanding more visual experiences, Aerial Cinematography will continue to grow and invent new ways of ‘catching our eyes’ from the sky. As you can see, Aerial Cinematography is a serious and important actor in both the Aerial Work aviation sector and Hollywood. With that said, and as a film director would say at the end of filming – "That's a Rap!" I

FLYING FOR THE STARS Fred North has carved out a niche flying helicopters as camera-ships for Hollywood

blockbusters where skill and attention to detail allow the capturing of just the footage the director wants. Something that will always be difficult to do with drones…

If you want a great shot for an action movie, having the option to use a helicopter can provide something unique. Fast-moving, often low-level, and often following other vehicles as the action plays out, it requires planning, concentration and skill that only a select breed of highly experienced helicopter pilots — the stunt film pilots — can provide. They often have thousands of flight hours and have developed an innate sense of what constitutes a good shot. Fred North is one of these pilots. Born in Africa to French parents who were teachers, Fred moved to Europe at 19 — his interest in flying having already kicked off thanks to watching military helicopters in Senegal as a small child. But it was a later flight in an Aérospatiale Alouette II, doors off (being on a photo mission) that really inspired him to learn to fly.

Becoming a Movie Pilot North obtained his commercial pilot licence for helicopters in France when he was only 21 and started out offering flights in a Bell 47. Then, when he’d done around 1,200 hours of flying, he was employed doing utility and rescue work in the French Alps and then flew TV cameras for events such as the Tour de France and Formula One Grand Prix.

36 AERIAL WORK EUROPE AUGUST 2021

During this time North realised the difference between flying/filming at 500 to 1,000 feet above the action, and low-level chases where the camera can get ‘up-close and personal’ with the subject. Then in 1996 a camera operator in the US recruited him for a film shoot in Venezuela. After earning what he would usually make in a year flying TV cameras, and feeling increasingly that he wanted to try something more creative, North realised where his future lay. Now a pilot with more than 20,000 hours, North can look back on a career of 26 years working on some 200 films — including some of the best-known franchises of the era, such as San Andreas, Spectre, and Mission ImpossibleRogue Nation. Naturally this experience means he is still sought after by directors across the industry when they need an expert who can translate their vision for a scene into dynamic footage via creative flying.

Drone Threat? With drones now part of the TV/film-maker’s toolkit, you could be forgiven for thinking the days of having a helicopter camera-ship are numbered. North begs to disagree, and in fact sees very little overlap between manned and unmanned flying for movie-making.

These days he has a Eurocopter AS 350B3, a three-bladed, five-passenger turbine (which these days is sold new as the Airbus Helicopters H125, and in North America as the H125 ‘AStar’). Given its almost 900 horsepower and a gimbal-mounted camera at below its nose, North has a highly capable tool for capturing film while he is trusted as someone with a firm eye on safety when filming dynamic action sequences that could be considered risky. Beyond that, when on location North often knows where to go to hire local helicopters for filming, from providers that can be trusted to maintain their aircraft properly while also being happy for them to be used for filming assignments. It is essential, he says, that you can trust your chosen ship when flying at highspeed close to vehicles and structures, close to the ground or challenging terrain, and even through tunnels and under bridges.

Safety Focus As with any flying, if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail. With movie shoots, says North, you start with the desired outcome, plan the mission, review and address any potentially unsafe aspects, learn everything you can about the environment, and ensure your crew (both on board and on the ground) know the mission – all well before you even think about getting in the aircraft. North says walking through a complicated sequence up to ten times is not uncommon, and even that only comes after several weeks of planning — from liaising with the movie-makers on how to meet their requirements, pricing it all up, and looking at execution in increasing detail. Some of the preparation time usually involves obtaining approvals and negotiating the removal of low-level obstacles (e.g. street lights, signs, overhead wires). Involving the regulator (the FAA in the US) early and treating them as part of the team can help smooth things out, says North.

Tuning In It’s important to understand the director before working for him or her. North does his homework by watching the director’s last couple of films, paying particular attention to how the action sequences have been approached. Then, he says, come meetings with the producer, director of photography, production designer, assistant director, to fully understand the goal.

Meanwhile the helicopter is prepared and fitted with the equipment needed to carry out the mission. Usually, the equipment consists of a gyro-stabilised nose mount with a camera capable of matching the quality of footage being gathered on the ground. Counterweights are used in/on the aft of the aircraft to balance out the weight of all this. North generally works with a photographer he knows and trusts. Working as a team, once a mission starts they don’t speak much as the flying/filming has all been planned in advance. As the pilot, North keeps his eye on two monitors, while the camera operator has one. This helps both to know what is being filmed while the director can also see this as the video is transmitted in real time to the ground. North also communicates with ground pilot controllers while spotters help ensure the planned course is kept, clear of obstacles. So might it be safer with a drone after all? North believes choosing between a drone and a helicopter is not so much about safety as the end-goal. He believes that by personally flying the camera, he is more aware of various aspects such as perspective, depth perception, spatial orientation, timing and the feel that gives the movie audience that ‘wow’ factor.

Post Analysis After a busy day’s flying and filming North tries to get some quiet time to analyse the result, and to see if everything went to plan.

How Can I Follow the Stars? North says that aspiring movie pilots should challenge themselves as they add flying experience. While sightseeing tours build time, more complex flying such as cargo lifting, search and rescue, and even firefighting, stretch your limits and teach you new perspectives. Even if you don’t have a helicopter, you can start out with a camera rig so you can provide it alongside your services as pilot — something North did for five years. But even a good pilot needs also to have a good ‘eye’ for lighting, and for composing and framing shots. But with the right attributes, he believes there is always room for new talent.

Helicopters are Indispensable for Society and the Future of Mobility

EUROPEAN ROTORS: the Worldwide VTOL Community Meets in Germany

Helping people in need as quickly as possible, fighting forest fires or installing and monitoring important infrastructure: with their many different areas of operation, helicopters make an invaluable contribution to society every day. Flexibility, agility, and the ability to take off and land anywhere bring numerous advantages – even in areas which are difficult to access.

For the first time, the European Helicopter Association (EHA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) are joining forces to create EUROPEAN ROTORS, a global networking platform for the VTOL industry.

The helicopter is not only a machine for transport, but also a crane, a measuring device and even an organ transporter, depending on the type of operation. Helicopters are used wherever speed and flexibility are required away from airports – this is what makes them so unique.

In autumn 2021 in Cologne, the focus will be on the mix of a trade fair and conference and, for the first time at an event of this kind, also on further training opportunities. Among the attendees expected are over 100 exhibitors (including Airbus, Bell, Leonardo, Robinson Helicopter, Safran, ADAC Luftrettung) and 3,500 B2B participants.

Who?

Operators, manufacturers, air traffic control authorities, supply industry, mechanics, pilots, customers, suppliers and students, etc.

What?

Networking, informing about innovations and trends, and further education (contained in the Training and Conference Programme).

When?

November 16 – 18, 2021

Where?

Koelnmesse Hall 8, Cologne

Urban Air Mobility The VTOL industry (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) is also working on innovations in electric and hybrid aircraft that operate with a high degree of autonomy and play an important role in future mobility. Within the framework of urban air mobility concepts, air taxis are set to extend urban transport options into the airspace – as a solution to traffic jams or to cope with the boom in urban living. At the new show platform EUROPEAN ROTORS, the VTOL sector will be presenting itself for the first time at Koelnmesse from 16 to 18 November 2021, discussing current issues, presenting innovations, and demonstrating the various fields of application.

HELICOPTER APPLICATION

Some Questions We Will Address:

CASE STUDIES

What will the helicopter of the future look like in its role of transporting passengers? Is all-weather capability away from airports to ensure continuous air rescue really possible? How can helicopters become more efficient and thus ‘greener’? How does society benefit from helicopters? How have helicopters supported police and rescue services during the coronavirus pandemic?

On-site Appointments with Manufacturers and Operators

Get the latest from the established helicopter manufacturers (e.g. Airbus, Leonardo, Robinson) and engine manufacturers (e.g. Safran), as well as from the operators (e.g. ADAC Luftrettung, Heli Austria), and talk to experts (e.g. industry representatives, association representatives, pilots, engineers) from the sector.

Current Challenges Does the lack of pilots endanger emergency care? How can helicopters become even safer? How can drones and air taxis be integrated into the airspace? And how can flight safety be guaranteed in the future?

AERIAL WORK 1.

Precise and low-impact deployment for Agriculture and Forestry

Facts:

In Germany, helicopters spread around 230,000 tons of lime over 600 km2 of forest every year. A helicopter can transport up to 600 m3 of timber per day. Projects / References Heliswiss International, Switzerland KMN Koopmann Helicopter, Germany Environmental pollution, pest infestations, climate change and aggressive forestry are causing difficulties for native forests. Helicopters have proven to be a useful solution for protecting forests. Since the 1980s, for example, they have been deployed in the fight against acidic soils caused by emissions in ‘forest liming’ – but currently to a much lesser extent than is necessary. Helicopters are also the tool of choice for pinpoint pest control in remote or inaccessible terrain – such as when spraying pesticides in steep-slope viticulture. In areas that are difficult to access, forests can be carefully managed by aerial logging — harvesting the timber from the air. This makes it unnecessary to cut aisles for harvester use or access roads. It therefore reduces the impact on the ecosystem to a minimum. How does the targeted use of helicopters contribute to forest health? What is the cost-benefit ratio? What contribution will helicopters and drones make to the agriculture and forestry of the future?

2.

Helicopters Assisting in Infrastructure

Facts

A helicopter can inspect 300 km of power lines in just one day. Around 1 million kilometres of oil, gas and water pipelines are checked by helicopter in Germany every year. Projects / References Airtelis, France Heli Austria, Austria Airwork Heliseilerei In difficult and inaccessible terrain, helicopters play an important role – such as for the installation of antennas, electricity pylons, cable cars and mountain huts. But helicopters are also used in a variety of ways for the maintenance and repair of power lines, the laying of cables or the pruning of trees along railway lines. In just one day, power lines can be visually inspected by helicopter over a length of around 300 kilometres – more than with any other tool. In addition, around 1 million kilometres of oil, gas and water pipelines are inspected from the air every year. Helicopters are often the only tool with which heavy loads, building materials, supplies, freight or workers can be transported to areas that are difficult to access. In the mountains, especially, helicopters are used to lift heavy loads weighing several tonnes, fly them quickly to their destination and set them down precisely. How does the helicopter contribute to security of supply? Should helicopters be called in more often to with a view to preventing potential damage? What effective contribution do helicopters make to the construction, maintenance and monitoring of infrastructure?

Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.

The Benefits of Micro VGs • Lower Lift Off Speed • Lower Stall Speeds • Improved Controllability • Improved Characteristics • Improved Safety • S.T.O.L. Benefits • 1 Day Installation

ASL Camguard™ is an advanced oil supplement, F.A.A. accepted for use in most piston aircraft engines. Camguard is formulated to safeguard the investment in your aircraft engine by addressing the complex and interrelated problems of corrosion, carbon deposits and mechanical wear. Camguard combats corrosion by leaving a continuous film of inhibitor on metal surfaces. Camguard halts deposit formation, leaving your engine clean and parts free to move. So whether you fly a little or a lot, Camguard always pays dividends with decreased aircraft engine maintenance costs. Just adding 5% of ASL Camguard to your oil at every oil change provides peace of mind that comes with knowing your investment is protected.

Understanding Maintenance & Picking the Right MRO for Your Business Post the COVID pandemic, it’s critical for operators to keep up their maintenance schedules and chose an engine and component MRO who is ready to fly with you as the skies re-open. With more than 30 years’ engineering and turbine engine experience, TAE Aerospace is perfectly positioned to assist aircraft operators across the globe with a broad range of engine maintenance services, as well as component servicing and parts supply. Adhering to engine maintenance intervals keeps an engine running efficiently during operating seasons by ensuring consistent engine performance. It also reduces the likelihood of an AOG event and can lower the cost at a scheduled maintenance interval. Performing scheduled routine maintenance is a critical factor in keeping your engine healthy and minimizing maintenance costs – even with the reduced flying hours many operators are experiencing during the pandemic. Authorized by numerous OEMs, including Honeywell, Woodward and GE, TAE Aerospace not only offers its full engine MRO capability, but also a wide range of aircraft parts and engine components, from new to overhauled or exchange. We are also known for our heavy and light maintenance, scheduled and unscheduled engine and component repair for the Pratt and Whitney PT6A. The company also offers one of the largest field service networks in the industry and can dispatch technicians to service your aircraft in any location - 24/7. According to CEO Andrew Sanderson, TAE Aerospace has been trusted by aircraft operators in both the commercial and defense sectors around the world for more than three decades. “We have a very successful model which offers a combination of OEM authorizations, parts supply, engine rentals, onthe-ground technical support, unique repair capabilities and other innovations that have seen us grow rapidly across the globe,” Mr Sanderson explains. “It means we deliver faster and more cost-effective turnarounds, reduced downtime and over-the-phone service that combine to deliver an excellent customer experience. “We also pride ourselves in understanding the industries in which our customers operate, whether its agriculture, tourism, skydiving, firefighting or transport. It means we can often anticipate customer needs as they arise.”

A 400-HOUR TBO EXTENSION IS REAL VALUE Lycoming holds itself to its own standard – the Lycoming Standard. It is a bar, continuously raised, to be better than everyone, including ourselves. For example, our recent 200-hour TBO extensions give our customers more flying time, increased cost efficiency, and peace of mind. In some cases, 400-hour TBO extensions can be approved. Genuine Lycoming engines and parts are held to high quality standards, offer improved wear characteristics, and incorporate Lycoming’s latest innovations and enhancements. Add all this to our customer service, which is unmatched in general aviation, and a factory warranty, and you quickly realize that a genuine Lycoming engine is the right choice. There is no substitute for the reliability and durability that you expect and receive from Lycoming. Don’t trust your safety to imitations. Choose a genuine Lycoming.
