mobility. Significantly, the Sri Lanka poverty assessment finds no correlation between a household head’s religion or ethnicity and the incidence of poverty (World Bank 2007, 28). It may be that the importance of ethnicity emerges more strongly from community-level than from household-level analysis. However, the World Bank’s data, as indicated earlier, exclude the Northern and Eastern provinces, which have the greatest presence of minority ethnic groups. 21. It is important to note that some young Muslim women are being sent overseas for jobs, cultural strictures notwithstanding. They are sent mainly as domestic workers to the Middle East. Families apparently believe that if dire economic circumstances compel their young women to work outside the country, they will be better off working in Muslim countries, within a familiar religious and social setting.
