Overview WorkplaceNL administers Newfoundland and Labrador’s mandatory, employer-funded, no fault workers’ compensation system. More specifically, WorkplaceNL promotes safe and healthy workplaces, in addition to providing return-to-work programs and benefits to injured workers and their dependents, based on assessments collected from employers. WorkplaceNL serves approximately 17,700 employers and 213,000 workers.

WorkplaceNL adheres to its funding and investment policies. In 2020, WorkplaceNL’s total revenue was $244.6 million. This includes $131.4 million in assessment revenue, $109.4 million in investment income, and $3.8 million in third party recoveries and administrative fees paid by self-insured employers. WorkplaceNL’s total expenses were $212.5 million. Benefits for injured workers are the most significant component of WorkplaceNL’s expenses, which comprises 82 per cent of expenses, while administration expenses are approximately 9 per cent.
