There’s no doubt that increasing bottom line profits during the last couple of years has taken an extraordinary amount of effort, hard work and discipline, but I don’t recall anyone ever suggesting that business ownership was a walk in the park.

BUSINESS STRATEGIES

Many business owners convey that they feel like they’re working twice as hard just to maintain the previous year’s turnover. Consumer behaviour is changing and many businesses are finding that the old ways of doing things no longer work. Her business aspirations

WIN

INDUSTRY ACCOLADES

For most people, the idea of having enough money to retire comfortably at 40 years of age or less is little more than a pipe dream. For financial planner and accountant OLIVIA MARAGNA, it’s definitely a reality. For the past 10 years, the now 34-year-old diminutive former cane farmer’s daughter and co-founder of Aspire Retire Financial Services has made a habit of breaking through barriers to succeed in Australia’s largely male-dominated financial planning industry. In late October, the quietly spoken businesswoman was awarded the highest accolade her industry can bestow – winning the inaugural Association of Financial Advisers (AFA) Female Excellence in Advice Award, for her commitment to excellence and superior client service. She was humbled by this particular award, being the youngest in the group, as it positioned her as an exemplar business leader to encourage more women to enter into and excel in her profession. In a career punctuated with Australian ‘firsts’, major business awards and standout business results, Olivia has always been driven by the idea that if you want to get somewhere, you have to do it bigger and better: At 26, she established Aspire Retire as one of Australia’s first full-fee-for-service financialplanning firms. Not only was the business among a handful eschewing the then popular commission-based business model, it was granted its financial planning licence in a record three days.

n

Olivia’s attention to client service ensures 100 per cent retention rates, and her indomitable desire to help others through simple financial education and coaching are the business differentiators that have underpinned the continued success of her business.

n

In 2005 and at just 28, Olivia became the youngest Australian to receive Self Managed Superannuation Adviser Accreditation (SSA) from all three Super Fund Associations of Australia (SPAA, SPA and ICAA).

n

She was named 2008 Telstra Queensland Young Business Woman of the Year, in recognition of her business achievements, associated with Aspire Retire, and her

n

4 WORKING WOMEN® n Summer 2011/12

community work, assisting orphanages in Fiji. “Winning the Telstra Young Business Woman Award in 2008 came with so many business and personal benefits. As a role model, I have realised you need to be even more accountable and, most importantly, you need to stay at the top of your game,” Olivia says. In 2009, Aspire Retire was named Telstra Queensland Small Business of the Year.

n

Aspire Retire also won Quest Business Achiever Awards for the City South region in 2010 and 2011.

n

“When I was about 20, I mapped out the next 10 to 15 years in a spreadsheet with lots of milestones. In my head, I have always wanted to retire at 35 so I purposely didn’t do things slowly. Many advisers don’t practice what they preach and they don’t do what they tell their clients to do. But I did. I had shares at 20, my first house at 23 and my own business at 26.” Olivia plans to write her book on self managed super and maybe develop a product to help more people with the financial basics. By 40, she believes she will have reached her goal of spending three months every year living in the Cinque Terre region of the Italian Riviera. “That’s living the dream for me,” she says.

OLIVIA’S TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

Set yourself some financial goals – Be bold in what you set and be accountable and reward yourself when you achieve little milestones.

n

Have a plan – Having a strategy provides direction and helps set up some discipline around achieving what you want and how you are going to get there. Partner with a reputable financial planner to help you devise this plan and review it at least annually.

n

Take a risk – Whether it is starting a business or taking a chance on something you have wanted to develop. From day one, consider how you can turn your business into an asset and sell it.

n

Earn more and save more – Invest pay rises and windfalls, instead of spending them and increasing your cost of living. If you put these amounts away, you will be surprised how much they amount to. If you don’t, your cost of living will increase with your pay.

n

Structure – Having the right structure can save you big dollars so think about in whose name you should hold particular investments and businesses as this can save you tens of thousands of dollars down the track.

n

Take on debt and pay it off smartly – Using the bank’s money to make you money is a great way to get ahead as it magnifies your gains… but don’t forget it also magnifies your losses if things go wrong. Structure your loans smartly so you can pay them off without affecting the tax benefits long term.

n

Have buffers – Always have an emergency fund or back up plan for contingencies such as being out of work, time off work for children or health, business being slow, an investment property being vacant for two months and the list goes on. Ensure you have between three to eight months worth of your expenses and commitments in an emergency fund or accessible if needed.

n

Don’t forget about super – Putting a little extra into super or salary sacrifice pays off in the long run and helps minimise tax. Putting a little away now will mean a big difference at retirement.

n

Get great advice – Seek the advice of a reputable financial adviser who treats you uniquely as opposed to feeding you pigeonhole strategies. Having one who understands your goals and explains things in easy-tounderstand language is invaluable. They will be able to provide you with the knowledge, figures and most importantly will give you options around your plans and keep you accountable for your goals. Choose one who charges you a fee to see them as opposed to a percentage of your investments so that there isn’t any bias towards particular investments. n

DRILLING DOWN TO

what’s important

Finding that happy balance between business and personal life can be a never-ending struggle for many people. For CAROLYN ROWLAND, that special place took 40 years to find but she got there and is now thriving in every way. Carolyn Rowland, Owner and Director of Trend Style and Image, has four children and successfully owns and operates three thriving businesses. However, it took her years to figure out what she would like to achieve in her life, until an unexpected turning point.

Carolyn’s Tips for a Successful Life

“When I turned 40 I found a peace in my life, a direction and a certainty knowing I could be more than who I was at the time. My husband Simon and I were running a successful million dollar Horizontal Drilling company but I wasn’t fulfilled or happy and I felt like I didn’t have any time for me as I was always busy doing everything for everyone else. This is when I thought I was going to become a QuickBooks operator and completed my training in this field. I then worked out what my true passion for life was and that was assisting people to look and feel better about themselves. After completing my Style and Image Training, then completing my Diploma of Life Coaching and Masters in NLP, Trend Style and Image was born.”

time to step into a ‘Dream Room’ and dream up incredible long-term goals, then work backwards towards achieving these goals. Shortterm goals are just as important as they assist you to grow into your long-term goals. Every week I write lists of what I would like to achieve and take massive action to complete this.

Carolyn incorporated all her training to make Trend Style and Image into what it is today, with her own studio, training programs, personalised consultations and workshops. Her success did not cease there. Carolyn implemented her education into the Horizontal Drilling company, which has since seen a 300 per cent growth. “We are working less and enjoying more success in our businesses and life. We also have a very successful investment property business which operates by itself, with the assistance of experts in this field. The secret to all our success is not doing all the work ourselves. We now have managers, administration staff and even a buyer’s advocate for our investment properties so we are enjoying our weekends, not running around looking at properties,” says Carolyn. Carolyn and her husband enjoy their extra time with family; they are having more holidays, better relationships and more success in their lives. Carolyn enjoys all aspects of what Trend has brought, not only to her clients’ lives but to her life as well. Carolyn has learnt the importance of taking time out to connect with friends and to appreciate being a successful and stylish woman. 6 WORKING WOMEN® n Summer 2011/12

Family First – All the success I am achieving in life would not mean anything to me without my beautiful husband and children. They are everything to me and I always try to work my businesses around our family.

Long-term and Short-term Goals – It is

Show Up – Show up to as many events as possible. I have spoken in front of a group of as few as four people and guess what, they were a wonderful crowd and I received four clients. When you love what you do it doesn’t matter how many people are there, just show up and be your best. Speak where you can and spread your message.

Know You Can – It is time to believe in you and know you can have more happiness and success in your life. It all starts with loving you and respecting who you are. When you are filled with self-love and self-respect you can share this with many others. What a wonderful role model you will be for those you love in your life.

The GPS Girl:

REACHING HER DESTINATION

Finding the right direction for your life can often prove challenging and sometimes life takes you on a path you weren’t expecting. KAREN JACOBSEN didn’t see her future as the ‘GPS girl’ coming but it is now her trademark. Karen Jacobsen has spent much of the past few years meeting people who are sure they have met her before. And they have, sort of, as Karen is the voice on many of the on air commercials heard around the world. She also resides in millions of cars and often interrupts our conversations by telling us where to go. Karen is the voice, Australian Karen, on your automobile’s GPS system. Karen’s journey began in Mackay in Tropical North Queensland. At two years of age she could be heard singing along to the music on the radio. Karen’s love of music and singing planted seeds that would eventually take her across the globe to New York, although at the time she had very firm plans to go to Los Angeles. After finishing college in Brisbane, Karen relocated to Sydney where her career took a few unexpected turns. As she successfully progressed through the entertainment industry she began to record voice-overs for commercials as well as singing. The name Karen Jacobsen, along with her singing and speaking voice, soon became synonymous with the advertising industry. During this very busy time, New York began to replace LA as the ‘place to be.’ Arguably the hub of the advertising world, New York seemed a natural progression if Karen wanted to take the next step in a burgeoning multi-faceted career. In 2000, she surprised everyone and took the giant step to New York. This was a massive leap of faith and comparatively a few million miles from Mackay. A few more obscure side roads opened up for her after the first year that she describes as “The most extreme year of my life.” While she struggled through this time she still knew deep inside that this amazing city was where she should be. The GPS involvement was a fascinating time in her life and she was amazed at the simplicity of the whole thing. Karen tells the story: “It’s done by a text to speech system. I recorded about 50 hours of script and the requirement

was to capture every combination of syllables possible. They then chopped up the recording and made a voice system so that every time you type a sentence, a voice would speak it. I didn’t need to say every street name in the world, I simply needed to say every sentence they had created for me in order to capture all of the syllables possible. Amazingly, it is as simple as that. It’s mind blowing isn’t it?” Karen receives a lot of mail from people who have GPS in their vehicles; most of them amusing. She recently met a woman who apologised for strangling her when she got all the cables mixed up and tangled round the steering wheel. Another family has named her Zoe after their pet cat and yet another has an eight year old who has written a song about her. Karen laughingly added, “People tell me that their relationships are a lot better as they now yell at me in the GPS and not at each other.” The past year has seen Karen develop her brand ‘The GPS Girl’, and she speaks to groups who want to inspire the best in their people and create a road map for their future. Her first

book, The GPS Girl’s Road Map for Your Future, is designed to help people put themselves in the driver’s seat of their lives. Who knows where the winds of change will take this remarkable entrepreneur in the future but wherever it is she should be able find her way around when she gets there. n

WW POLITICALLY SPEAKING

THINK GLOBALLY

Act Locally

With a successful career as an international legal and employment expert, what would motivate a bright and accomplished young woman to return to Brisbane in order to focus on helping people in her local community? For SAXON RICE, it’s all about caring for people and giving back to the community. With a career spanning locations including Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, the Solomon Islands, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, Saxon Rice now has her sights set firmly on a leafy pocket of Brisbane’s inner-west. Saxon’s impressive credentials include a Master of International Law from the Australian National University and a Bachelor of Economics majoring in Political Economy & Government from Sydney University. These degrees launched her professional journey

PNG. All required complex research, analysis, evaluation and appraisal of Government policies, and recommendations for change or action.

Foreign Affairs were a significant focus for Saxon, encompassing a fact-finding mission throughout the Pacific region and a Joint Parliamentary Delegation to Indonesia and

In late 2004, Saxon entered the private sector, working for Ingeus Limited in Brisbane on international market development, identifying new workforce participation service opportunities. The outcomes of Saxon’s research formed the cornerstone of investment decisions for the Group, and she was quickly promoted to Ingeus Europe’s London office as Head of European Business Development.

“There are hurdles for everyone – in business or politics, or life. You get over them, or fall down,” Saxon says.

Shortly after, Saxon became Ingeus’ Director of Global Business Development, delivering employment services and establishing sustainable expansion initiatives in Europe and Asia. Returning to Brisbane, the political arena again beckoned Saxon, and she became Policy Advisor to Senator Brett Mason, Queensland’s Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Education, and Advisor to Ross Vasta MP, Federal Member for Bonner. Saxon then decided upon her ultimate career goal and earlier this year ‘threw her hat in the ring’, standing for pre-selection of the Liberal National Party’s seat of Mount Coot-tha, an area encompassing the Brisbane communities of Bardon, Paddington, Red Hill, Milton, Auchenflower and Toowong. With extensive experience of both the public and private sectors, Saxon was selected as the LNP candidate. Her career path has proved the perfect road for her planned seat in State politics. Giving back to the community and caring for the people she aspires to represent is her focus, and Saxon is determined to make a real difference in her local area, just as she did with her business programmes on a global basis. Saxon champions equality for women across all levels and whilst acknowledging women can often face hurdles in the political world,

she has forged her own career in politics, concentrating on hard work and desired results for the local community. “There are hurdles for everyone – in business or politics, or life. You get over them, or fall down,” Saxon says. In Saxon’s view, it’s much better to take the leap, and keep striving. n

Innovation

Your key growth business driver Keeping ahead of the competition can be difficult in an ever-changing market. JOYCELYN DAVIES explains how the market leaders got to where they are and how they manage to stay in front.

What is innovation and why is it critical to business growth? World-renowned business guru, Peter F. Drucker once said, “The temptation of business is always to feed yesterday and to starve tomorrow.”

as Kodak – they used to be industry leaders but fell behind as their challengers innovated and now where are they? It doesn’t matter how large or small the business is – innovation is imperative!

There is more to innovation than ideas. According to one study, 75 per cent of CEOs of the fastest growing companies claim their strongest competitive advantage is unique products and services and the distinct business processes that power them to market – “innovation” by another name. An array of research studies into the key drivers of market growth across all sectors reinforces the growing importance of innovation.

So, what is innovation? Innovation is about ‘thinking differently’ and it encompasses a broad array of activities. If plotted on a continuum, they would range from short-term initiatives, such as the continuous process of evolving and improving/renovating current brands and offerings, right through to longerterm initiatives which are revolutionary and totally new propositions for the world market – new brands, products and services, such as the internet, the TV, and the first mobile phone.

No business today can afford to ‘stand still’, it needs to maintain a ‘competitive advantage’ in order to create sustainable growth year on year, in an environment where both the customer and competitors are ever changing.

Innovation puts businesses on the offensive. The business that builds a culture of innovation is on the path to growth.

Innovation puts businesses on the offensive. The business that builds a culture of innovation is on the path to growth. The business that fails to innovate at all is on the road to obsolescence. There are many examples which demonstrate the importance of innovation – just think about the U.S. domestic automakers or a brand such

A business will usually have a mix of these activities on the go at any one time; a mix of short, medium and long-term projects, and if it wishes to be a market leader it definitely needs to actively pursue projects at both ends of the continuum. If it wishes to be a strong second or third player in the market, it absolutely needs

to be evolving and improving the offering and extracting maximum value from existing assets and competencies. For example, this could mean creating improved recipes, differentiated packaging or service offerings, line extensions, new innovative short-term promotional offers to generate renewed interest and trial by consumers and encourage customers to “remain brand loyal”, “re-look” or “re-try” a brand. Whilst investment in improvements to existing products and processes does bring growth and is required, it is generally new game changing break-throughs, i.e. creating new products and lines of business, that will launch businesses into new markets, enable rapid growth, and create high return on investment. Businesses that continuously innovate will create and re-invent new markets, products, services and business models – which all lead to more growth. n avies Joycelyn D

WW BUSINESS SUCCESS

Success

ON YOUR TERMS Everyone would love to be their own boss but as the saying goes, ‘It’s easier said than done.’ Or is it? MALLEY MARTIN shares a few simple principles that will put you on the road toward home business success.

One of the most rewarding things about being in the home business profession is hearing the amazing success stories of ordinary people who have created massive abundance in their lives. Massive abundance means success on your terms – whether that is better relationships, better health, more freedom, personal fulfilment or generational wealth. Statistically, more than 80 per cent of millionaires and successful entrepreneurs come from very diverse middle and lower-middle class backgrounds. The good news is that the secrets of wealth creation are no longer reserved for those who are already wealthy. The bad news is that it puts the responsibility to choose abundance, and an alternative lifestyle, squarely back on the individual.

A few key principles are at work here: Gratitude: When you greet each day with a grateful heart as a habit of life, you are exponentially more likely to attract the people, resources and opportunities you need in order to create that abundance.

n

‘Stick-at it’ Mentality: A relentless pursuit of the objective – no matter what. Andy Andrews in his book The Traveller’s Gift calls this the ability to stick to your principles without exception.

Desire, drive and determination to succeed: You don’t need any special qualifications, certificates or huge upfront capital to make it in the home-based business world.

n

Be relentless and have a grateful heart: If you are prepared to do what others will not for the next three to five years, you can enjoy rewards and lifestyle that others do not for the rest of their lives.

MAKING THE

WRITE IMPRESSION

Quite often, the first impression people get of your business has nothing to do with logos, face-to-face contact or advertising. ROSEMARY OSBORNE shares tips on how to create and present documents that elevate the perception and professionalism of your business. The presentation of accurate, clear and concise business documentation can be a risk management strategy for your business. Perfect documentation is a communication process that can define the quality and standard of your business product. If you have a grammar phobia, it is time to build a bridge. There is evidence that spelling mistakes, punctuation and grammar errors deter potential business clients and create inefficiencies and conflict. Make sure your document message is clear and succinct and says exactly what you want it to say. It is difficult to identify your own written errors without a few basic strategies. Be organised in your writing process. Consider the structure of the information to enhance

n

the flow of ideas and concepts. Do a flow chart if necessary and maybe use dot points or subheadings. State your main message in the opening paragraph and a summary of the main concepts. Don’t bury key or uncomfortable information within the text. Bring everything together in the last paragraph with a strong clarification of proposed actions. Be concise and aware of repetition of ideas and be prepared to delete unnecessary words and phrases.

n

Use a warm and friendly tone. Write in simple words avoiding all formal expressions, jargon and industry talk. Use active voice: ‘the project is due Friday’ rather than “the project should be completed and is required in this office by Friday’.

n

Do you know why businesses fail?

Format your document so readers can scan your information and identify key messages. Use white space to create calmness in your document.

n

Avoid blocks of bold or italics and use a business font like Arial, Calibri or Veranda. Use one font throughout your document.

n

Don’t rely on spell check and grammar check alone. They get it wrong sometimes and if you do use spell check, make sure it is the Australian version. A dictionary is essential and if your grammar is poor, there are Australian Business Style Manuals available.

n

Some useful proofreading tips: Put some distance between yourself and the document – a minimum of 24 hours or longer if possible. Print the document and read it aloud or get someone to read it to you – at least four times – looking for distinct things on each reading.

1. Meaning and consistency. Avoid long and complex sentences as they often lose meaning. Check that you are consistent with your terminology and logic.

2. Grammar. Could you say it differently and with fewer words? Are the verb tenses correct? Remember the basic rules of grammar and punctuation.

3. Spelling. Put a piece of paper under each line and commence the check from the end of the document. We all have words that we consistently misspell.

4. Presentation. Review your typefaces and formatting. Remove clutter and check your hyperlinks are active, all diagrams labelled and any references included.

7 VITAL STEPS TO

customer ENGAGEMENT Studies show that connection and engagement go hand in hand. Join INGRID CLIFF as she discusses seven simple rules for connecting with your customers.

The deeper the connection with your clients and customers, the more loyal they are to your company or business. The more loyal your customers are, the more they buy and recommend other people to your business. In other words, great business prospects emerge from connecting with your employees and customers. So how do you build connections with people? Listed below are seven quick tips to help you engage and connect with your customers:

1. Be direct. When writing to your customers, use conversation style writing. This means writing as if you were speaking to them. Make sure you sound personable at all times and always use their first name.

2. Feel it. Work out the emotions a person may be feeling and acknowledge them. You can do this either in your writing or in your verbal communications with them.

3. Share it. Share experiences and stories with your customers. This will assist in the development of personal relationships with your customer base.

4. Interact and listen. Ask for feedback, check for understanding and don’t get defensive or run screaming when people tell you something you don’t want to hear.

5. Show your human side. In the ‘About us’ section on your website, show a bit of who you are as a person. It’s okay to have a life outside work – this shows that you are a real person, not a machine.

6. Disclose. Share a well-considered amount of self-disclosure. Disclosure is the quickest way to intimacy but there are risks associated if people do not respect your disclosure. Make a conscious choice about how much you will disclose and to whom.

7. Admit your failings. People have more trust in businesses that say, “Yes, we had three refunds last year as our product was not a good match for those clients.” Compare this to a business that claims, “We have never had any refunds.” Honesty is a value highly respected by customers. If you want to build connection, there is no other way than through the sharing of yourself. No system or logic process comes close to the power of you being authentically real. n

WW SMART TECHNOLOGY

Smartphones DRAW YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS Your customers are using their phones to find you, but are you making yourself available? HEATHER MALONEY describes the key activities required to enable your business on mobile devices. With recent sales of smartphones in Australia outstripping PC sales, and web browsing via mobile devices increasing exponentially, an iPhone / Android App might be an important tool to help you engage with your customers. How do you go about getting an App created for your business, and should you cater for iPhones, the Android operating system, iPads...? Do you really need an App, or will a mobile friendly version of your website suffice? There are three key activities in successfully interacting with your customers on mobile devices:

1. What’s in, what’s out? Planning your smartphone App is great fun! You need to brainstorm, then cull and focus, all the possible things you could do with smartphone technology to engage with your customers. Consider: GPS functionality – activities relevant to a particular physical location.

n

Push options – updates and regular information, delivered immediately.

n

Making your business easy to deal with –

n

using a phone for browsing is all about ease. Sensory behaviour – flipping, wiping, wind, light...

n

Proximity awareness – who is nearby?

n

Remember, people want to ‘do’ things with Apps (not just read information). But don’t cram too much into the App – it is far better to do a few useful things, very well. During the planning you will also need to decide whether you will make your App free, or charge a small amount for it.

You are competing with over 420,000 iPhone Apps and over 250,000 Android Apps, so just being in the App Store is clearly not enough. 2. Visual Design When designing for smartphones, you need to consider the viewport dimensions but also to make the design touch friendly. Think fat fingers, and the various motions used commonly on an iPhone (pressing a button and swiping sideways or up and down are the most common).

Would you like to have radiant health as you age? Are you ageing faster than you would like, or would you just like to feel better? Find out the secrets to youthful ageing in the book “Ageless Vitality” The first 5 women who email info@agelessvitality.com.au will receive a signed copy of the book Ageless Vitality. Ensuring the design of screen elements (buttons, menus etc.) is familiar to smart phone users is a very good idea but don’t forget to add some fun and creativity.

3. Build and Test Here you need to rely on the experts. iPhone Apps are written in a particular language for which you need a specialist programmer. Your iPhone App will be stored within an Apple Developer account, and every App is manually reviewed by Apple to ensure that it is written correctly and is acceptable for the iTunes App Store. Testing (by you as well as your programmers) is imperative to ensure that your customers will have a good experience, and that the App behaves as expected. Once your App has been built, you will need to promote it, of course. You are competing with over 420,000 iPhone Apps and over 250,000 Android Apps, so just being in the App Store is clearly not enough. As a minimum, promote your new App to existing customers via email / physical newsletters, on the home page of your website, and within all your existing physical and online marketing materials, including point of sale. n

BUSINESS BUILDERS

A small business can only be as unique as its owner, creator and manager. This is the strength and also the weakness of most private enterprises. JANETTE PHILP identifies and deals with some key factors that cause stress in most businesses.

To have a stress-free small business, first you must enjoy what you do. Far too many small business owners don’t love what they are doing and wonder why their business struggles.

If you are suffering with burnout, stress or little joy in your working day, then it’s time to take a realistic look at your business’s creator and manager, you, and make some changes. Fortunately, there are ways to rein in stress.

You can encounter stress because you are busy growing and making money – or because you are not. You can suffer with stress, brought about through self-neglect rather than self-care.

your life and your goals. Are you meeting your personal needs by getting out socially and having time off from work? Taking care of yourself also means getting sufficient rest, eating a healthy diet and exercising so you are more alert and fit, both mentally and physically. Treat yourself well and you will be in a better position to take care of your business.

direction of our most dominant thoughts. If you think negatively, you will fail. Think positively and you will be drawn like a magnet to your outcome. While it may sound strange, stress is a choice. It’s all about your reaction to events. The response you choose makes the difference between surviving the hard times with finesse, or at the other end of the scale, suffering a full-blown panic attack. Remember, after a long hard day, indulge in some down time that you enjoy and that makes you happy. n

Lists

Your Secret Weapon to Success

The use of lists can be an understated ally in the world of procrastination. Be a list maker and doer, rather than just a note taker. KIRSTY O’CALLAGHAN shows you how to save time and energy with the simplicity of listing. Why does making a list work and how can you make it work for you? The most valuable question you can ask yourself multiple times during the day is, “What is the best use of my time right now?” When asking this question, it is an opportunity to look at your list and see what you could be doing in the time you have right now and the energy you have. When creating your list, sit down and randomly write down all the things you need and want to be doing. Be aware that there are things you need to do and also things you want to do but may not need to. Both are of equal importance. This is mainly due to the things you need to do (e.g. washing, cleaning, tedious work requirements) and the things you want to do (e.g. being creative personally and professionally, spending time with family), when completed, leave you with an equal sense of satisfaction and completion. Once you have a list together, prioritise tasks. This means looking at: When does it have to be completed?

n

When would be the most appropriate time of day for me to do it?

n

put in your diary. There are things that can just stay on your list and you can complete them if you have spare time during the day. You can create checklists for various activities, which are invaluable due to the ease of task completion and the insurance that nothing will be forgotten. You can have checklists for every part of your life, work tasks, weekend chores or a holiday checklist of what to pack. When creating the list, consider a goal you have and list the steps you need to take in order to achieve the goal. If it is a big goal, then there may be smaller goals which make up the big goal, and therefore maybe each of the smaller goals needs its own list. You can hand write your list, use a computer program, use your organiser or even mobile phone. You will avoid procrastination and feel a sense of satisfaction when you look back over your day and see what you have achieved. Lists assist in overcoming negative emotions and self-put downs when tasks are forgotten or not completed. Lists give you choices and assist in managing feelings of being overwhelmed or unfocused. “Set peace of mind as your highest goal and organise your life around it.” - Brian Tracy. n

How long it will take?

n

Then it is time to transfer tasks into your diary for daily execution, if you do not get all tasks done on that day, transfer them to the following day for completion. Not everything needs to be

BEWARE OF THE

business flare

Many people aspire to be unique in business, but how unique is too unique? TERRI MITCHELL uncovers how to monitor whether what you see as ‘business flair’ is actually turning your customers away before they get to interact with you, your products or your services.

For many small business owners, today’s business climate is increasingly tough. Staying ahead of the game results in business differentiation and these points of difference, the unique selling propositions (USPs), help you to establish what is distinct about your business. Importantly, you need to be sure you are not killing your business through actions that are incongruent with your USPs. Here are three signs to be aware of to ensure your USPs are not spelling the death of your business:

1. CUSTOMER DIS-SERVICE If you have built your business on very special customer treatment, don’t rest on your laurels. From the moment you hire staff to provide your

customer service, you risk losing control over the exceptional customer service you have painstakingly developed. Let’s say that part of your business uniqueness is your exceptional and personalised customer service and you promote this in every business communication. Nothing will kill your USP quicker than your staff delivering dodgy or below-par service to your precious customers. Poor manners, extensive telephone holds, disrespectful attitudes, passing-the-buck and shoddy inefficiencies, all can destroy your USP in a single heartbeat.

2. APPLES MAY BE APPLES Developing your USP in the first place is one of the greater challenges for small business owners. Your hard work and USP benefit

When you choose your USPs and build your reputation and brand around them, make sure you and your staff can completely embody them, and that they are not damaging to all the hard work you have put in. gained can be lost if you do not monitor your competition and keep abreast of trends and technologies affecting your uniqueness. If a business similar to yours begins operating within your territory, be sure you research them and revisit your USPs to stay unique. Otherwise your USP may no longer be current, or may have been trumped by your competitors. If there is still a unique differentiator, you need to capitalise on it. Apples may be apples, but Fujis are distinctly different to green apples in flavour, texture and sweetness. Stay ahead of your immediate competitors and keep up with trends, to protect or enhance your USP.

3. BEWARE OF THE LITIGIOUS USP

In 1973, Dominos Pizza (USA) offered superfast pizza delivery with a guarantee of timely arrival or the pizza was free. On the promise of pizza within 30 minutes, two major court cases resulted in Dominos paying out liabilities after delivery drivers caused one woman’s death in a motor vehicle accident and severely injured another. They scrapped the ‘30 minutes or free’ promotion when the public perception was that Dominos delivery drivers were reckless and dangerous. The message here is that perception is everything, so don’t select a USP that will see you in court. When you choose your USPs and build your reputation and brand around them, make sure you and your staff can completely embody them, and that they are not damaging to all the hard work you have put in. Choose your unique selling propositions wisely and use your USPs to underscore everything about your business as the cornerstone of your actions, and revisit them often. n ell

WW BUSINESS STRATEGIES

HOW TO BUILD YOUR BUSINESS CRED! In business, those with a track record are seen to have credibility. However, gaining this track record can be a bit of a chicken and egg situation – after all, you need customers to gain customers and prove your credibility. MICHELLE BADATO explains what a small business can do to gain credibility when they are just getting off the ground. Do not ignore the value of your web presence. When someone wants to research your company they will look online. A professional website that looks like it has had money spent on it will create an extremely positive first impression. Alternatively, a badly designed website that doesn’t make sense and is hard to navigate will give a poor impression of your company. No website? You might as well wave your customers goodbye. Don’t forget that when it comes to promoting your brand, there is no one better than you to do it. If you don’t have a positive ‘can-do’ attitude, no one else will. Don’t be afraid to talk your business up and act as though you are already well established.

Instead of telling new customers that you are small and need a chance to prove yourself, make offers and promises that you know you will be able to fulfil. Talk big and act big and soon you will be big! It is also important to present your company properly. If you arrange a meeting with a client and have nowhere to meet and greet them, you are going to look unorganised. If you don’t have the money for a permanent office address, you should consider virtual office solutions; they are cheaper and give you the option of meeting prospective clients in a centrally located address. This will give them the impression that you are a well-run, successful business, which will soon turn you into one. Clients shop with their eyes and while they are assessing your proposal, you can be sure that they are

making a mental assessment of the state of your company. There is also no harm in acting like a successful player within your industry – join networking events and get to know others in your sector. Make links, attend conferences and gain any relevant qualifications that you can. Remember that half the battle in establishing yourself as credible in the early stages comes from appearing to be credible, connected and knowledgeable. n dato

A delicious recipe for

success

Sometimes the simplest of strategies can be under appreciated when trying to reach the top in business. MARTINA WILSON shares her ‘fail proof’ recipe for success with this simple four step guide.

How many attempts do you normally allow yourself when you are trying to achieve a certain outcome? Do you give up after one or two tries if you don’t experience immediate success, or do you keep giving it your best shot until you get what you’re after?

IS THIS YOUR FUTURE? FACT 96% of small businesses fail QUESTION Do you want to be one of the 4%? Your first step begins by talking about it So pick up the phone to begin your confidential no obligation discussion with NAOMI MASHFORD 0407 806 448 NOW

When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, he made 999 unsuccessful attempts before he finally put together a light bulb that worked. When you follow the four step success formula to the letter, you will eventually reach the outcome you are looking for.

FOUR STEPS TO SUCCESS: 1. DECIDE YOUR OUTCOME.

The only way to arrive at your destination is to know where you are heading. You must know exactly what you want to achieve, be very specific. Write down your desired outcome, this will help you articulate exactly what you are striving for.

2. TAKE ACTION.

This may sound obvious, but no action equals zero success. Successful people are action oriented. Many people get stuck on this step, they have plenty of ideas however they fail to take action. Walk, talk, take action, and you will get amazing results!

Both positive and negative feedback is valuable. Evaluate all the feedback you receive as a result of step two. Ask yourself: ‘Is my action moving me closer to my desired outcome, or further away?’ If you find your action is taking you away from your outcome, change what you are doing.

4. BE FLEXIBLE.

If you are not experiencing the result you desire, you need to change your action. When you keep repeating the same action, you will keep getting the same result. Obvious maybe, but why do so many people still do it? It can be tempting to keep doing the same thing when you have invested time, energy and money into your current strategy. If it isn’t working, you need to be flexible, cut your losses and think of another plan. WW ON THE MONEY

Cashflow Many small business owners know they aren’t good with managing money so naturally they leave it to their expert accountants and bookkeepers. TRACEY LOUBSER explains how ignoring the financial side of your business could lead to its demise.

You are probably tired of hearing all the failure statistics for small businesses both here and overseas. Instead of looking at the negatives, it makes more sense to look at the why and how failure can be avoided. The fact is 87 per cent of small businesses fail as a result of one factor...and one factor alone. All business owners wear four different hats. The question is, which one is most important? Is it your: ‘Sales’ hat: if you are not selling your product or service you do not have a business!

n

‘Marketing’ hat: whether it is online marketing or networking – how will your customers know what you have to offer?

n

‘Leadership’ hat: if you do not lead your team, your business can fall to pieces literally overnight!

n

‘Finance’ or ‘Money’ hat?

services. They know how many widgets they need to sell to cover costs. They are confident about where their business will stand both in profit and cash flow this month and in three months’ time, and they can reliably expect success this time next year. How do they know this? How do they do this? Answer: They take ownership of their numbers – they don’t rely on their accountant or bookkeeper to take care of the ‘money side’ and by doing this they fill the missing link between their bookkeeper and accountant. Yes, you as the Business Owner are the only one who can fill that missing link between your bookkeeper (who does your monthly/quarterly BAS) and your accountant (who does your tax at year end). This is how they do it!

1. The first thing these business owners do is: Quantify their goals.

n

Consider this Australian Statistic: 87 per cent of small business failures are because business owners do not understand the money side of their business. This means that of all the small businesses that fail, only 13 per cent of failures are due to bad leadership, bad marketing and bad sales skills. The bulk of these business failures are a result of bad money management! The business owners who do succeed know the margins they are making on their products and

They know how many widgets they have to sell every year, every month, every week and every day, to cover costs and make the profit they want for their business. Not only does the business owner know these numbers but their staff know them as well. Their staff work toward these targets because they understand that the success of the business relies on reaching these goals, and when the business performs they benefit as well.

WHO’S MINDING YOUR TILL? 2. These business owners spend one hour a month reviewing their numbers. They know how many widgets they really sold in that month. They know which customers owe them money. They know to whom they owe money. They understand the difference between profit and cash flow, and more importantly they know how this difference works in their business.

3. By spending this time every month, these business owners measure and track their success. They know how this month’s sales compare to the sales this time last year, then they use this data to open up the performance conversation with their team. By doing this, they can determine which marketing strategies worked, which didn’t, and what they need to do to make it bigger and better next time! Understanding the true performance of your business is your responsibility. If you want your small business to be a big business, with big profit and big cashflow, treat it as such! n

BULLET PROOF your business Is your business prepared for disaster, and not just the natural ones? SUSAN RALLINGS and PATRICIA DOYLE delve into how and why your business needs coverage in more areas than you think. It is tough to start a business from scratch, but now that you have done the hard yards and your business is up and running, have you protected everything? Meaning, do you have insurance? This is not just about general insurance, covering your stock, worker’s compensation and the business premises, what if something were to happen to you? Would you need to employ someone to keep the business running? How would you pay your overheads and your staff? Don’t let everything you have worked so hard to build get demolished! Professional Indemnity and Public Liability are essential for most businesses. It is also a good idea to get some advice on whether you could be personally liable. If this is the case, a trust strategy may be something to investigate. A trust can help protect your assets, i.e. your house, investments etc. from potential litigation. It is also highly important to review your personal insurances: Income Protection, Trauma Cover, Life Cover and Total and Permanent Disablement. There is also Business Expenses insurance which can work hand in hand with your personal insurances. This is the cover most small businesses should have. What is Business Expenses Cover? It provides a monthly payment to cover the fixed expenses of your business, should you become totally or partially disabled. The monthly amount insured can be up to $60,000, and in most cases you will need to provide financial evidence to determine the amount insured. A claim on Business Expenses will be payable for up to 12 months and will provide funding for lease payments, staff wages, electricity etc. Insurance provides peace of mind as well as a safety net for you and your family. Get your website found by

THE RIGHT AUDIENCE

The simple fact is, that while a host of things – like search engine optimisation (SEO) and pay-per-click advertising (PPC) – do drive your visibility online, there are a couple of things that have much more weight than anything else; having discoverable, relevant and remarkable content.

HOW SEARCH ENGINES WORK We are not going to pretend to understand the complex algorithms at work deep within the Googleplex. However, we do know that search engines do these three things:

Crawl: The ‘spiders’ (automated programs) of

n

a search engine use hyperlinks to ‘crawl’ all documents and pages on the web.

Index: The spider indexes a page’s content and stores the information in a large database, which is the search engine’s index.

n

24 WORKING WOMEN® n Summer 2011/12

Rank: When a user makes a search query, the search engine delivers the results and ranks them by using a complex (and topsecret) algorithm which determines which page is the most relevant to the user’s query.

What this means is getting links to your site from bloggers, PR releases, forum comments, social media bookmark submissions and other directory-styled sites. And for this to happen, it usually means a site has great content.

So, if what the search engine is doing is working out which page has the information most relevant to someone’s search, then it stands to reason that you will want to make your site as relevant as possible – in the eyes of Google, and Bing and Yahoo of course.

Based on the research we have reviewed, about 20 per cent of what drives organic search rankings is a site’s health, which really centres on how navigable it is and how fast the site is. The other 80 per cent is really to do with the content; and by that we mean how relevant and remarkable that content is:

n

Making your site relevant to search engines is driven by a number of factors: Site health, content and the quality and authority of the links outside your site, that point to it. In an annual survey of 72 top SEO consultants, the consensus is that links drive about 67 per cent of the rankings.

The degree to which it matches keyword phrases people are using – relevance.

n

How recent and how many pages there are – increased chance of being considered relevant.

n

And the quality and quantity of external links – being remarkable.

n

WW CYBERSAVVY

The reality for most business owners is that if you are not online, you will soon be invisible but how do you do you increase your online visibility? AMANDA FALCONER breaks down the secrets to achieving your online optimisation goals with some web savvy pointers. The secret to relevant content: The first step to getting your website and content found by quality visitors is doing some keyword research. Keyword research is the process of uncovering and selecting the appropriate keywords to use on your website. Brainstorm a few ideas about the logical phrases and words that people would use to find your product or service. Then try out Google’s free online keyword research tool to help expand your list and find new ideas.

The secret to remarkable content: If you want people to link to your website and content then just having the right keywords is not going to be enough. What people want is something that is interesting to read – something that is remarkable.

First up is a catchy headline – give your visitors a reason to read on, whether by promising Oprah’s myth-busters, dishing up a top-secret insight, or offering a useful how-to guide. But make sure the headline actually does relate to the content somehow, or your visitors will stop reading straight away! Above all, the content needs to be interesting and should address the needs and concerns of your ideal visitors.

The secret to making remarkable and relevant content referable: Remember the age-old riddle “if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” Well, the same philosophy can be applied to the content on your website. If your content is amazing but no one is around to

Philosophy and riddles aside, when it comes to being found first online, a great use of keywords and quality content will mean nothing if people don’t link to it.

hear about it, can it still place on the first page of search results? Philosophy and riddles aside, when it comes to being found first online, a great use of keywords and quality content will mean nothing if people don’t link to it. The best way to ensure Google finds your site is for your pages to be linked from lots of pages on other sites. Google’s search engine spiders jump from page to page on the web via links, so the more sites that link to yours, the more likely it is that your site will rank highly, and in turn, attract the quality visitors you want. n

WHAT IS ORGANIC SEO

and why does business ignore it? In the giant ocean that the World Wide Web has turned into, how is a little fish supposed to get noticed, especially when there are giant sharks getting all the attention? SANDY MCDONALD explains how Organic SEO works and why you should take note of it.

Organic SEO (search engine optimisation) starts with the simple premise that there are three essential online ingredients: your proposition, the visitors who are searching for it and the search engines. First, the content on your website needs to communicate your proposition in such a way as to be attractive, valuable and accessible to a potential visitor (customer/member). Simultaneously, this proposition needs to be communicated well, and consistently, to the search engines, so they both select and promote it as a relevant solution to the visitor searching for it. In other words, your selected website landing page is ranked on page one of the search results, preferably in positions one, two or three.

Your website billboard: Next, your prewritten advertisement, (the Meta title and description), entices the visitor to click through to your site. Think of this as succeeding in getting a customer to walk through your shop door. If you are in the top three positions in the search results, it is up to 68 per cent more likely they will.

Making the offer irresistible: As they were already searching for what you offer they are inclined to act. In addition, when you give them loads of valuable information, your offer becomes irresistible. You also make it simple for them to complete the transaction. Everything is well laid out and leads them

inexorably to your most wanted response, purchase, download or sign up. If they were in your shop, this is equivalent to creating a flow that leads them down the aisles to examine your wares, and at every point, giving them the opportunity to choose and complete the deal.

Building your community: As a bonus, your visitors can trade their email address for your valuable and free information download. You can now communicate with them to develop a long-term relationship and increase the value of the association. The visitor loves your solution and starts to advocate for you. They tell others on the web and then they send more visitors by linking to your site. These are known as back links.

Link love: The search engines add these as votes of confidence to their relevancy matrix. They also give you extra ticks because your visitors love your wares and have spent time reading your content and watching your videos. Analysed and computed by the search engine spiders, you are sent more visitors as a result, which builds your website reputation and increases your online success. Organic SEO – It is what it says it is: Organic. More visitors, better ranking, more back links. More back links, more visitors, better ranking. And so it grows.

TH E WOR D ON TH E STR EET IS NOW

the word on the web Social Media is the newest word-of-mouth marketing platform. Although a new platform for businesses to understand, it is already reaping monetary returns for those who use the social networks correctly. LEANNE PEARD shares how to build strong relationships in social networks.

Social media has been taking the world by storm over the last couple of years, with new social media sites popping up around every corner. It is advisable to join as many of these sites as possible as the amount of business social media sites bring, as opposed to search engines and other forms of advertising, is huge! But maintaining many social media sites for business purposes can be extremely time consuming. Even though it is a very efficient way of getting business and winning over new clients, not all of us have the time to build a strong relationship with our clients through social media sites. If you run a small business with a handful of employees, it is recommended that you just stick with the big names of the social media world such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn. These are your four leaders at the moment and you will find that the type of users, as well as their personal interests, differ across each of these sites. People who like MySpace might not like Facebook, and vice versa. It is important to know where your target market is hiding. To find the target market, you need to look at the age group you are catering for. If you are selling anti-aging creams, for example, and you only have a MySpace account, you will soon become disappointed and de-motivated as the amount of effort and time you put into creating your site simply does not reflect in the sales figures. That is because MySpace is generally used by the younger members of society, limiting your leads in a big way. This is why it is important to join at least three social media sites and see which one is best for your target market when it comes to buyers. One site might get you an extra $500 a week while the other brings in $12 a week due to differences in the average age and personal interests of users from site to site. Once you have acquired the perfect social media site relevant to your business, you can start building strong relationships with your potential – as well as current – clients.

just advertisement after advertisement. As soon as people realise that you are only their “friend” in order to sell something, they will quickly delete you or simply ignore you.

Once you have acquired the perfect social media site relevant to your business, you can start building strong relationships with your potential – as well as current – clients. The last thing you want is to annoy your client base. When doing these updates, include something about the weather, last weekend’s football results or simply write a motivational quote. This will capture your target audience’s attention and make it easier for you to sell to them in the future as you can slowly build trust

without them even realising it. Never aim at making a sale, aim at creating long-term clients and always build towards the future. Word of Mouth Marketing: Give customers a reason to talk about your products and services, and make it easier for that conversation to take place. It is the art and science of building active, mutually beneficial consumerto-consumer and consumer-to-marketer communications. Turn your relationships into raving fans. n d Leanne Pear

KYLIE DICKMAN shows you three Google tools you should be using for your online business. 1. KEYWORDS FOR WEBSITE

3. COMPETITOR ALERTS

Essentially, keywords are the words or phrases that people type into a search engine such as Google, in order to find a product or service. Use Google’s free ‘Wonderwheel’ keyword tool to help you find the right keywords.

Another tool available is the use of ‘Google Alerts’. This is related to your keywords, but you can use it to keep up to date with your competitors as well. Basically, you select keywords and Google will send you an alert with a list of web search results including those keywords. n

2. WEBSITE ANALYSIS AND IMPROVEMENT Google offers you ‘Google Analytics’ which is an analysis of your website. If you have a website and don’t have access to the analysis of your site activity you must do this as it is free, it’s easy and it’s invaluable for checking how your website is performing and how to improve it.

10 REASONS

JOURNALISTS DETEST

PR People Are you writing solid press releases and getting nowhere with journalists, and cannot figure out why? JULIE MORGAN walks you through how and why journalists reject press releases and what you can do to change that.

Getting editorial coverage for your business can be priceless. But, if you are getting knockbacks from journalists, it may be that you are one of these types:

1. No News Harry: This is someone who writes a press release and contacts the media without any news. It is vague and reads like a company profile or sales pitch. For a story to be newsworthy it needs to be fresh, timely, relevant, significant, intriguing or controversial.

2. Old News Sally: Woops, you have sent out the press release too late. A media release about something that occurred last week or last month is not news. Plan your PR efforts well in advance and be mindful of the deadlines and lead-times journalists work to.

3. Flash Gordon: Your press release is a real production – beautifully designed with bells and whistles – but where is the news? Presentation matters but without any substantial content, there will be little chance of achieving publicity.

4. The Exaggerator: You ‘talk the talk’ but fall flat when asked about ‘walking the walk’. Your press release is full of hyperbole including ‘unique’ and ‘cutting edge’ but where is the evidence? Include facts or research to back up your claims and avoid the clichés.

5. The Descriptor: Your press release takes ages to wade through, sentences are so long and convoluted that you don’t get past the first paragraph. Where is the news? When writing for the media, make sure your sentences are less than 25 words long, your language is clear and simple, and you get to your point fast.

6. The Scattergun: You think the more you send the greater the response. Wrong! Do your homework on your target audience and distribute your press release accordingly. That way you will increase your response rate and

not annoy journalists who are not interested. Less is more.

7. The Nag Ring: You are a terrier; you leave numerous messages or call at inappropriate times. If you want to follow up your press release, leave one voicemail or send one email. If a journalist is interested they will let you know.

8. The Techno-luddite: You have new product photos and attach them all in your email, which slows the journalist’s PC to a crawl. Make sure all attachments are low resolution and say in your email that better quality ones are available.

Your press release takes ages to wade through, sentences are so long and convoluted that you don’t get past the first paragraph. Where is the news? 9. Flat Out Fred: You are under the pump and neglected to proofread your press release and the journalist’s name is misspelt. Always review your work. First impressions count.

10. The Fat Controller: You want to control every word written by the journalist. You ask to see their copy to approve it, or restrict the parameters of the article so much so that there is no story. If you aren’t prepared to share your story, you might just kill the journalist’s interest altogether. Do these PR types sound familiar? Before you embark on your next PR campaign, ask yourself what type you are and if you are being held back as a result of your approach? n

eFormatting

TEXT OR HTML?

Choosing between Text and HTML formatting in your marketing emails can be confusing, especially if you don’t know their pros and cons. CHARLY LEETHAM outlines the difference and the various options that are available. When considering using email as a marketing communication medium for your business, the question arises as to how to provide customers with sufficient information to drive sales and visitors to your website or bricks and mortar premises, without being flagged as spam. A second consideration is ensuring that the email message is formatted in an appealing manner so that it will be read. Information and presentation work hand in hand when setting up your email marketing campaign(s) and both are equally as important. When considering the presentation of emails, you need to decide whether to use plain text or HTML formatted messages.

PLAIN TEXT EMAILS Plain text emails are easily displayed on any device and, typically, more easily delivered. Most email filtering software will generally allow text only messages through, whereas formatted messages may be marked as spam. However, plain text is very, well, plain. It’s much like reading a print ad. There is no interaction with the message and the user must take extra steps to go to your website to take advantage of any special offers. There are no visual queues for your message, so the words have to do a lot of work, inspiring action.

HTML FORMATTED EMAILS HTML formatting allows you to essentially send a small web page to your customers. This

Express Shop Online!

allows for the look and formatting that matches your company branding, however, this type of message can also trigger spam filters. The key to having your HTML formatted emails delivered is simplicity. Avoid too many bells and whistles. Your email message should consist of images and colours and should not contain code (or scripts). A simple, clean, graphic layout for the email newsletter template that reflects the website layout will be far more effective.

SEND BOTH FORMATS! It should also be noted that customers may have HTML formatted emails blocked or use a device that does not display the mail as intended. If possible, your email marketing tool should send both HTML and text versions of the email message – as the client’s email program will generally choose the best format to display.

TEXT EMAIL VERSUS HTML EMAIL Using HTML as an email format can be more complicated and requires work to setup an appropriate email template. Email Marketing Tools like AWeber provide a number of professional email templates for use, however, to maintain the branding of a business a specific template will need to be created. In addition, not all recipients will be able to read HTML email messages.

The benefit of HTML formatted email messages is that a visually appealing message with appropriate visual queues that matches your business branding can be sent. Text emails although they can be delivered (and read) on just about any device, are essentially boring and it is not possible to highlight parts of the message as visual queues. n

BANG FOR YOUR BUCK

Banner Advertising Marketing has turned a new leaf with its advertising techniques. JANE TOOHEY explains what banner advertising is and how it can revolutionise your marketing campaigns.

Marketing your business can be a very expensive exercise and often, in traditional print media, very difficult to track and value. You know that marketing your business online can be more cost effective using tactics like Adwords, social media and banner advertising. The key to this is being able to target specific prospective consumers in ‘buying mode’. One online tool, banner advertising, has recently become more effective and can now deliver real value for money. The new ways of banner advertising use advanced targeting and optimisation techniques that target your brand message to potential customers where they are at their most receptive and hence more likely to take action. A certain level of artificial intelligence now powers some banner advertising systems. As consumers search online, these systems will display ads to them relevant only to their search terms. There are actually more than 300,0000 monetised websites in Australia alone (that’s websites that accept banner advertising), so with these clever systems, your ads can appear on any of those websites as many times as your daily budget allows, to people actually searching for your type of product or service. Have you ever been on Facebook after visiting your favourite online shopping site, and seen an ad in Facebook for the very product you either just purchased or researched for purchasing? It feels bit big brother-ish doesn’t it, but it works! Computer-driven campaign management systems can also learn over time which keywords and which websites drive the best performance for a campaign. Then, they can automatically shift more of your ad dollars to the most effective sites. This is conversionbased optimisation. As users interact with your campaign’s display ads, the sites that result in higher conversion rates receive the highest frequency of your banner ads. The technology allocates budget by steering ad dollars towards the sites that are most cost-effective in bringing people to the brand’s website or landing page. Marketing your business in this way ensures the highest frequency of brand messages get to the highest number of targeted consumers.

Banner ad remarketing is another clever tool used in these new systems. It works by showing the display ad to potential consumers who have previously visited your site through any of the campaign ads. After the first visit, a remarketing cookie is placed on their computer that tells the campaign manager (this is a computer not a person) to remarket to this user. By targeting users who have already expressed interest by visiting your site, remarketing reinforces your brand wherever they are online. Thus, marketing your business becomes more effective, more targeted and more accountable.

WW CAREER SUCCESS

BLUEPRINT

for career development With the constantly changing economy, not many business people are certain they will be in the same job for long, or even the same industry. Whether you are switching careers or staying put, TANYA HONEYCHURCH has some tips that can assist you in furthering your career.

Our careers usually ‘evolve’, and in this fast paced world your career may take many twists and turns, sometimes in the most unexpected directions. Change is the only constant in the employment market and, according to the ABS Labour Mobility Survey, in the 12 months leading up to February 2010, 963,000 Australians changed their employer for a variety of reasons. Never before has it been so important to be able to manage your own career, up skill and work on your own professional development. You can no longer rely on your employer to provide you with training courses and qualifications. If you are supported financially and allocated time to do these on the job, consider yourself very fortunate! The Blueprint for Career Development is a framework of Career Development competencies which can help you to manage

your own career and make seamless transitions from one industry or job role to another. Two of the competencies are detailed below:

BUILD AND MAINTAIN A POSITIVE SELF-CONCEPT This competency helps you to explore who you are. Are you a “go to” person and well known for being excellent in your work? How can you ‘brand yourself’ before others do? In building a positive and influential work persona you will be confident to capitalise on your strengths and know when to work on areas for improvement. In building a positive self-concept you will feel confident communicating at all levels within a work environment and discovering how this influences others. You will become skilled at developing strategies for building positive relationships at work and in life as well as how to cope with growth and change.

If you are currently looking for work, then learning how to draw upon your past experience and natural talents and packaging them up to ‘sell’ to an employer is a key skill you will need to develop.

INTERACT POSITIVELY AND EFFECTIVELY WITH OTHERS Every employer and organisation wants to employ people with good interpersonal skills. The ability to be professionally sociable, effectively handle conflict resolution, show respect for diversity in the workplace and demonstrate a certain level of empathy, are all desirable interpersonal skills. A person, who can at all times maintain flexibility, and the ability to think outside the square, will always be highly sought after. Nobody else has your personality, appearance, skills and level of knowledge. In recognising the fact that no two people are the same and knowing how to promote your individual strengths, you will be well on your way to unlocking the secret to career success. n eychurch

WW HUMAN RESOURCES

HOW THEY LEARN HELPS YOU TO EARN Human Resources Coach NERIDA GUERIN explores how taking note of the learning and behaviour styles of employees you can instantly improve the efficiency and productivity of your staff, building more effective working relationships. The interesting thing is through our childhood at school our learning ability was judged on a standardised method and today in the workplace many managers still judge staff performance on one method, often their own! What would your day be like if you knew how to recognise and respond to the individual differences in your team and to what motivates them? No doubt if you think about your team there will be staff who will want to take copious notes whenever you ask them to do something, there are others who will be staring straight through you as they absorb the information and reflect on how they will apply the knowledge and then there are those who frustrate you, they can’t sit still and are always pushing the boundaries - at school they were often known as the class clown.

By building more effective relationships, you can improve the quality of the workplace and therefore the efficiency and productivity. The ‘C’ or Conscientious person is often very private and enjoys working independently. Being very analytical and highly fact driven is a strength you should harness for those detailed tasks. If quality control and a systematic approach are a required output put this team member on the project. What style fits you? Whilst not everyone may fit into one of these four styles exactly, it is

important to realise there are differences and knowing them can ensure a more effective and efficient team where individuals are enjoying their work and managers are achieving results. Reflect on your management style and discover how you could manage and motivate your staff more effectively. n erin

INDIVIDUALS BUSINESSES CORPORATE

By building more effective relationships, you can improve the quality of the workplace and therefore the efficiency and productivity. Let’s consider four basic behavioural styles that describe how people approach their work and relationships and see how they relate to you and your staff. The ‘D’ or Dominance style person has a need for achievement and fears losing control. They have a result oriented approach as well as provide ambitious goals and the opportunity to work independently or to compete to meet that end objective. The ‘I’ or Influence style person is highly spirited, lively and optimistic with a need for recognition. Allow them to collaborate and encourage them to work with other people. They are great in a team and keep projects moving. The ‘S’ or Steadiness style person is patient, needing acceptance and doesn’t want to disappoint. Encourage these team members and ensure you acknowledge their contribution, but avoid pushing for quick decisions or rushing outcomes.

Mirror, mirror

ON THE WALL

Do looks really count? PENELOPE JANE WHITELEY covers how and why your personal style and image most often determines how successful you are in establishing relationships with others in personal, social and business situations.

When we meet people for the first time, 55 per cent of our initial communication is visual, 38 per cent is vocal and 7 per cent is language based. The way you look, dress, act and feel about yourself will affect your ability to make a positive first impression. When you are confident that you are projecting a great visual style image you will: Succeed in establishing new relationships with ease both in the personal and professional arena.

n

Manage a wardrobe of clothes that will allow you to always look your best.

n

Improve your ability to make a positive first impression.

n

Love the person you see in the mirror!

n

Experience an increase in your self-esteem.

n

Style and image are not exclusive to just a select few people. Everyone can develop the skills to always look and feel their best. Style is less about beauty, age, size, wealth or even fashion, and more specifically about understanding yourself and having the confidence to uncover your unique style. If you wish to enjoy even more success in a business

By improving your image, you will always be confident that you are in control. Good grooming habits are the basis of an excellent personal appearance.

context, a great style image will result in others seeing you as capable and professional. By improving your image, you will always be confident that you are in control. Good grooming habits are the basis of an excellent personal appearance: Organise yourself so that skin care and make up becomes second nature. Taking care of your skin will keep you looking good well into the future and studies show that women who wear moderate make up are perceived as being more professional and self-assured.

n

Maintenance of your clothes and shoes is essential. Clothes should be clean, pressed and in good repair. Shoes should be well heeled and polished.

n

Understanding what colours bring out the best in you is a valuable skill. Studies have shown that colour affects us on many levels and can affect how we look and feel.

n

Managing your wardrobe is important. We wear 20 per cent of the clothing in our wardrobe! A wardrobe cull every six months helps you avoid the expense of buying more clothes when you probably have sufficient outfits unworn.

n

Hair needs to be well maintained and in a style that is flattering. Unkempt hair looks unattractive and is unprofessional.

n

Make sure you eat a healthy diet, do some form of exercise, and get adequate sleep. Insufficient sleep is one of the biggest problems women encounter; it affects them both personally and professionally and lowers their opinion of their self-image and their confidence.

All women should understand what works best for them in the area of personal colour and style. The better you look, the more confident you feel and the more effective and professional you appear to others. n ley

SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS

You are meeting a new client. You enter the room. In those first three seconds that client has already judged you – your mannerisms, your attire and your jewellery. VICKI CROSSLEY shows you what you reveal to others before you even speak. Your goal, when getting dressed for work, is to project a professional, competent image. You may have paid particular attention to your clothes but what about your accessories? Your jewellery can communicate more than you think. Next time you just ‘pop’ on a necklace, consider what it reveals about your personality.

flashy. Simple stud earrings or a small diamond pendant are fine. Leave the larger stones for evening wear.

DANGLY EARRINGS? Wear earrings no longer than three centimetres. Any longer and they will detract from your face. You want the client to focus on you, not your earrings!

APPROACHABLE? Consider your position at work and what aspect of your personality you wish to communicate. Is it important that you appear approachable? Jewellery with floral designs, soft curves, circles and ovals are characteristic of an approachable personality. Incorporate coloured gemstones, small pieces with movement and soft creamy white pearls. Wear open circles to reflect you are ‘open’ to new ideas, or a whimsical piece as a great conversation starter.

HIGHLY AUTHORITATIVE? Designs with spikes such as starburst brooches (lately popularised by Michelle Obama), sharp angles and strong geometric lines convey a highly authoritative persona. Overdo it and you could be considered ‘prickly’ or standoffish. To project a slightly cooler aspect of your personality, wear highly polished pieces in shades of black, grey and stark white, particularly pearls as they ‘reflect’ light. For a conservative and highly professional look, you cannot go wrong with small stud or hooped

CAREER KILLERS earrings, a single strand necklace and a classic watch.

STRONG, CONFIDENT, CREATIVE? Go for a fabulous statement piece. Wear it alone for maximum impact. A large colourful pendant, hand-painted earrings, a unique wide-cuff bangle or a large ring can convey confidence and creativity.

NOT CONFIDENT IN YOUR JEWELLERY CHOICES? Don’t get stuck in a jewellery rut. Express your personality. Show colleagues you are creative and a risk taker. Most business outfits need a boost from jewellery to convey personality – try one new piece of jewellery such as a statement bangle or ring. Just remember to keep it simple.

Avoid necklaces that emphasise your cleavage, particularly when wearing an open necked shirt. Opt for those that sit at the base of your throat. Jingly bangles, chandelier earrings and extra long chains emote an alluring, playful personality – is this the image you want to project in business? Ankle chains and toe rings – are great for the beach...

NOT SURE WHAT IS ACCEPTABLE IN YOUR WORKPLACE? If in doubt, take cues from your work colleagues. Consider your role in the company, the type of industry you work in and what aspect of your personality you want to reveal. n

WHAT ABOUT BLING? Go easy on the diamonds, real or fake. Some traditional workplaces consider them too

Take a New Line OF ATTACK ON

SELF-ESTEEM BARRIERS Are you at the end of another year, and still not where you want to be? Head Transition Coach SUE LESTER outlines how you can identify and change self-sabotaging habits. Self-sabotage kills your self-esteem and passion for life. Self-sabotage guarantees that nothing will change. There are five steps to turning self-sabotage into selfmotivation, so you can live and look back on your life with satisfaction and pride.

1. AWARENESS What you are not aware of, you cannot change, and self-denial is a powerful weapon you use against yourself. Signs to look for include: Urges to clean, tidy, shop, check emails/ Facebook, snack, watch TV/You Tube and file your fingernails, otherwise known as ‘procrastination’.

n

You have great ideas but don’t start. Or you start but don’t finish projects.

n

You talk yourself, or allow others to talk you, out of doing what feels right initially.

n

You use the words ‘but’ and ‘what if’ often.

n

When presented with the answer to your problems you say, “I’ll think about it” or “I have to talk to my husband”, instead of taking action.

n

You feel a twinge of jealousy when you hear that someone who did take action is thriving.

n

2. CLARITY Self-sabotage is a form of self-protection where it feels safer to stay where we are than to venture into the unknown. So clear the fog and make the unknown, known. Get clear on who you are, what you want, and what you are

prepared to change to get it. After all, if nothing changes, nothing changes. Your current life can never be any different until you change – your thoughts, feelings, habits, and actions. So, get clear on whether you want to spend the rest of your life as you are now, or whether you are willing to experience the discomfort of stretching and growing as you do things differently.

3. CONFIDENCE So, you are aware of your self-sabotage patterns, you are clear on what you are prepared to do, and what you want but now all the self-doubts and fears come up. Our confidence comes from our self-esteem, our underlying sense of self-worth, of being ‘enough’. Observe your self-talk – how much of

that is repeating old stories from the past? Or is it things people said to you as a child which you took onboard as a belief and continued to repeat over the years until it became part of your identity? Look for the verbal flags such as when you say, “I always”, “I never”, “I couldn’t do that” or “it’s okay for her but I”.

Acknowledge and reward your progress and your successes, as that encourages your unconscious mind to keep producing for you.

Focus on your strengths, and all the reasons why you can, rather than your weaknesses and reasons why you cannot. Learn from the past but know the past now only exists in your mind. What do you choose to have in your Present and carry into your Future? Believe you are worthy of success and that mistakes are simply a sign of growth, of trying new things and taking risks. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, plus mix with those who don’t know you – which will give you a fresh start, a clean slate and a chance to meet like-minded people.

you start to reach your goals and are drifting away from what motivated you in the first place you begin to get back into old habits and are right back where you started. For example, “I don’t want to be fat.” Once you no longer see yourself as ‘fat’ your motivation to exercise etc. drops away. You should set goals for yourself that will move you toward motivation and keep you going, for example, “I want a healthy body for the rest of my life”. Focus on the benefits to yourself from getting these tasks completed. Likewise, turn “I don’t want to be poor” into “Freedom of choice”. Make your goals juicy, exciting and realistic with a stretch.

4. MOTIVATION

5. REWARD

With self-confidence motivation becomes easier. You need to know what you want and how to get there, plus believe you deserve to get it. When

Acknowledge and reward your progress and your successes, as that encourages your unconscious mind to keep producing for

you. It’s a form of self-love, of gratitude and it increases your self-esteem and self-worth enormously. Rewarding measures your progress for you, and allows you to correct your course. The activity becomes pleasurable and satisfying, which means you are more likely to want to sign up for more. And then repeat Step 1. Be firm but gentle with yourself. You, like everyone else, are on a journey of continual growth and evolution. Know that you don’t have to do it all alone. Build your professional and personal support teams. Know that mistakes are simply a sign you are stepping out and up, so learn and move on. Remember, if you had given up the first time you fell, you would never have learnt to walk, let alone run. n

n

In order to know yourself, it is important to accurately perceive and interpret emotional information as a key to using, understanding and managing feelings; in other words, enhancing your emotional literacy. Effective decision-making and determining life choices in combination with recognising our patterns enables us to evaluate and develop the ability to make conscious choices about our patterns and their continual use. We are all governed by patterns, many of which are dysfunctional and lead us to poor decisions, ineffective problem solving and reduced creativity. Recognising your own patterns will

assist you to follow your intentions, protect you from being manipulated by fear and ego and keep you focused in the midst of change and challenge. As your own self-awareness increases, you may find that you want to adopt feelings and patterns that may be more effective. By choosing yourself, you will consciously direct your daily life by shifting out of reaction, such as beliefs and old patterns, and into action, new habits and patterns, that support your goals and intentions. This is done by applying consequential thinking, navigating emotions, engaging intrinsic motivation and exercising optimism. Understanding the consequences and implications of your choices, observing how you affect others and taking charge of your outcomes enables you to effectively apply consequential thinking. When you are navigating your emotions effectively, you will notice that on the job you are balanced, insightful and even inspiring to some. Being able to tap into the power and wisdom of feelings allows you to manage your own reactions, keeping you present and involved with other people whilst helping others to recognise that you are consistent, and this helps to build trust. Cellular wisdom

THE ROAD TO VITALITY Staying in tune with yourself can be difficult in this fast-paced work world but VICKY SPENCER shares how and why we can follow our cellular wisdom and have ageless vitality despite it all.

What do I mean by cellular wisdom? If DNA is your blueprint, then your cellular wisdom goes beyond this to provide you with your true potential, wisdom and knowing. This is the deep wisdom within you when you are truly present that will feel eternal and will give you the key to abundant vitality. Cellular wisdom is where you go when you follow your “gut instincts” when you “feel” you should turn a certain way or make that phone call. It is the deep knowledge that is the guiding force through your life. Cellular wisdom is different from the information you have learnt at school, or from your parents and society. The only way to know your cellular wisdom is to remain open to all information that is

around you, then go within and match it to your inner guidance. Do not misinterpret this outer information as your ‘truth’ but allow it to filter through your guidance system and feel it in your body. You may experience an ‘ah ha’ moment when there will be a feeling of deep resonance. Everyone will have their own way to access their wisdom. Find out what is yours. One thing is for sure, it will not be found through alcohol,

processed food or sugar. All these things will actually reduce your capacity to know the pure wisdom that constantly surrounds you. If your life is coming from a place of energy and vitality, there will be a good chance you are following your cellular wisdom. The times when life seems difficult are when you need to ask yourself ‘what is holding me in this pattern, why is there resistance to the natural flow?’ Every now and then you may catch yourself saying something that you thought you had changed or a pattern in a relationship that causes distress. When this happens it may be the result of a meme. A “Meme” is a powerful program in your system of different ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures or rituals. Becoming aware of them will allow you to compare them to your inner guidance and thereby let them go, allowing for renewal and growth rather than stagnation of old ideas resulting in breakdown and disease. Being aware of your cellular wisdom gives you a greater opportunity to live your life from a place of vitality, renewal and growth. n

WW TRAVEL

THE GOOD LIFE:

Retire to a life of travel

In today’s economic circumstances, it is hard for people to get away on a holiday let alone retire. NANNETTE HOLLIDAY explains that there are ways you can enjoy travel all for an inexpensive price. Today you can travel virtually anywhere your heart desires for the cost of an airfare and food, due to the benefits of the internet. This is thanks to several major organisations that have developed reputable services, including house sitting, house swapping, and couch surfing. Couch surfing essentially means you stay with your hosts on their couch (or a spare room) for a few days and they show you their hometown or local area. House swapping is exactly that, you swap your home with someone else and not necessarily at the same time. However, most people who engage in house swapping have second homes they offer up, not their primary residence. Then there is house sitting. While this may entail looking after pets (but not always), you will have the home rent free and often with the use of a car. The house-sitting phenomenon is exploding globally. Beginning

in Australia, the USA and UK, it is now common in Western Europe, Asia and some South American countries. Sitting durations range from a few days to a year or more. The companies offer their ‘brokerage’ or listing services on the internet. Sitters pay a minimal annual fee to register their services, while homeowners place their ads for free. Owners can also browse the people available and may contact you directly. The choice is yours, where you go, how long for, it’s all negotiated with the owners up front. Interview them, just as they will be checking you out. You must feel comfortable too.

Each house sit brings new rewards, delightful friendships and cultural exchanges along with history and lifestyle discoveries. So you think you cannot afford to retire and travel more now, or even travel overseas and continue working? Think again. If your business or work can be delivered remotely via internet, try a little house sitting. Enjoy the benefits of a mobile office with the joys of local Provencal markets, wines and history at your doorstep. Travel through house sitting provides more than just a change of scenery; the change of pace and living the local life is uplifting and invigorating. n

Holliday

Many retired couples, singles, writers, artists and students are now taking up house sitting. It is the ideal way to live and integrate with the locals. It’s much more rewarding than typical and often bland tourist accommodation.

Stay cool

without denting your wallet

With summer upon us it’s the time of year, across the country when the gentle hum of air conditioners can be heard both day and night. TESSA MULDOON shows us how we can keep that air con running and still put food on the table. Living in one of the sunniest countries on earth, most of us just couldn’t live with out the option of that cool air-con breeze coming from the corner. But with the never-ending rise in electricity costs and tighter budgets enforced in both homes and businesses, it’s time to look at the real impact of artificial cooling and how you can make some small changes for the better. Set your thermostat to 24°C and leave it there! One of the biggest operator mistakes for air conditioning is to leave the unit off and then when the room becomes unbearably hot you crank it up to a dramatically low 15°C. It will just work harder for longer trying to achieve the comfort level you desire. The most efficient way is to switch the system on early in the day and allow it to maintain a reasonable temperature over a long period of time. This should also be a balance if you have an office of different ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ people as 24°C is a good middle ground to keep everyone happy. Also make sure all the area is well enclosed to allow recirculation.

HAVE YOUR UNITS CLEANED AND WELL MAINTAINED. If you are going to power up cooling systems that may have collected dust over the winter months you should definitely look at a simple service call from the manufacturer to get things into working order and give it a good clean.

technology, performance and features that you really need. Understand the space you are trying to cool and other influencing factors so you are able to choose a suitable air output. If the system works overtime and you still need to stand in front of the vent to get any benefit, then you are just wasting money and time. Be realistic about what your requirements are and always consult with an air-conditioning expert. This will allow everyone to keep a cool head about the results.

SOLAR AIR CONDITIONING So much has already been made of the possibilities of using Solar to power air-conditioning systems around the country. These systems incorporate the sun’s energy to help create cool air and are an efficient way forward for our sunny way of life.

DECORATE WITH VIBRANCE The environment you live in can directly affect the way you feel, which in turn affects every aspect of your professional and personal life. Does your home atmosphere match the vibrant summer months or is it still holding on to that winter glum? JOANNA FORD shares her expertise on how to pump some life back into your home with just a few simple touches.

Spring and summer updates such as painted accent walls or decorative cushions can freshen up your home with minimal effort. Decorative cushions will complement an existing palette in your home and redefine its overall feel. Accent walls can update a space and make it feel brand new. Below are some tips on how you can update your home for the summer 2011 season:

1. Making Space – furniture painted the same colour as a wall will open up a space, and a glossy cupboard against a matte-finished wall will add texture along with colour.

2. Create a Focal Display of treasured items – use photo frames, candles and collectables.

3. Clear Vases – keeping vases clean and clear with a fresh bouquet or a single flower in each one is a simple and dramatic way to bring in a fresh feel to a home.

4. Don’t be Afraid to Mix colours, textures and patterns – patterned cushions on a block colour sofa, for example, give an instant point of interest and add depth.

5. Pale Palette – will always give a casual yet classic feel. Clean lines evoke the breezy, beautiful look of a beach cottage.

6. Juicy Colours – stimulating colours like

fuchsia pink and bright citrus get the adrenalin flowing. Mixing bright colours with neutrals is the best way to avoid overwhelming the senses.

WW OUT & ABOUT

THE

art

of hanging out One of the most exciting experiences one should have in life is to visit a commercial art gallery and attend the opening of an art exhibition. MARGARET CAMPBELL-RYDER walks you through the ways of an art gallery and what you should be looking for. For first-time buyers, remember, art is for everyone. Do not be put off the first time you walk into an art gallery, remember they are there to sell art and you are a potential client. Ask to be put on their mailing list so you can attend exhibition openings. When you buy your first piece of art it should be an exciting and memorable moment. Do not be afraid to ask questions, no question is ever stupid and your question should be treated with respect by the art gallery curator or art consultant. If you are not happy, walk out and find another gallery that is more accommodating and meets your needs. Your first art exhibition should be an exhilarating experience. Meeting the artist and discovering what inspired them to create their works for the exhibition should be a thrilling moment which will stay in your mind forever. At an exhibition opening, mingle amongst art lovers and discover how everyone has a different story to tell about their first purchase or their favourite artist. To see an artist bare their soul on canvas and witness the passion that has been created by this one person is the most amazing discovery. You cannot get this same experience from viewing art on a website;

the web is simply a tool used to show the many artists and their particular styles of artwork. This will never take away from seeing the work hanging in a gallery, the gallery atmosphere, the paint smells, the textures, the passion, the brush strokes, all there in real life on the wall in the gallery. Each piece of art work is completely unique and has to been seen in real life to be thoroughly appreciated. Art will last you a lifetime and give you pleasure every single day and if you find out the story of the art from the artist it will make it even more special. You will be amazed at some of the answers artists will give as to the source of their inspiration for a particular piece. It could be very simple, or reflect an emotional time in the artist’s life, or maybe a place the artist has visited. Your art choice should also be a reflection of yourself and your lifestyle, usually the first piece that leaps out at you is the one you always come back to. Listen to your heart. Pay attention to what the experts have to say but at the end of the day make up your own mind and buy. Art should be a lifelong passion of learning and collecting and you will quickly develop an eye for what you like. Do not be afraid to like something that someone else does not. Not everyone wants to wear the same clothes, so it stands to reason that we do not all want to buy the same art.

An exhibition is always a good time to buy from an artist as that is when they present their best work. It is often a surprise to discover that an artist can work on a major exhibition for up to two years. There are many emerging artists to select from, Australia has some of the most talented artists in the world, and they have to try harder to be the best they can as there is much more competition in our country compared to other parts of the world. Do not ever feel pressured into buying just because you are at an opening it may take one minute or one year to find what you love, but most of all enjoy the experience along the way. Art will quickly become a lifelong passion. When buying art there is only one important thing to remember: “Buy what you love.” n er mpbell-Ryd

WATCH OUT

TV Can Make You Fat MustHave WILLY WAGTAIL

Weight loss is always a battle when living a busy life, however, making some simple changes can result in you eating healthier food without a second thought. KATHRYN DAY explains how to change your environment so it works for you rather than against you. Strategies as simple as serving your food on a smaller plate will result in fewer calories consumed and prevent overeating. Reducing serve sizes is an important factor in losing weight. Studies show the bigger the plate, the more people serve, typically to the level of about 25 to 28 per cent more. Also, don’t rely on your stomach to tell you when you are full! It can lie! In fact, it takes about 20 minutes after you eat before your stomach registers that you are ‘full’. Eat slower and stop when you no longer feel hungry not full. Distracted TV watchers mindlessly eat more food as they don’t pay attention to what is in front of them. Studies show over 40 per cent more food is eaten while watching TV. Obviously the sort of food you eat is very important too. Watch out for the fat-free foods as this normally means carbohydrate rich. People tend to mindlessly eat more fat-free foods thinking they are lower in calories. Fat free does not mean fewer calories. They are normally loaded up with sugar and refined carbohydrate that raises insulin levels which signals to the body ‘store fat’! To counter all these mindless activities that promote weight gain, you need to start engaging in mindful activities to lose weight. But first you need to be clear on why you want to lose weight. Many people want to lose body fat simply to look good, however, having a high percentage of body fat is known to be one of the most serious causes of ill health. Some good reasons to lose body fat are:

your risk of developing a number of chronic diseases.

Bow Peep Dress, Harry Hoodie and Samantha Square Neck, are just a few of Willy Wagtail’s fun, colourful and practical pieces from the brand’s range of children’s clothing, all Australian made from 100% Australian Merino. This natural material regulates body temperature to keep kids cool in the summer sun. Gentle on the skin, durable and machine washable. RRP start from $15.95. To order and explore the range visit willywagtail.com.au.

Healthy ageing. Obesity is related to unhealthy, premature ageing. Consider fat loss a type of ‘life insurance’.

n

So start engaging in more mindful activities to lose those winter kilograms and look great in those swimmers this summer! n

3 TIPS FOR THE CAMERA SHY JANE HINCHEY gives helpful tips on how to guide your camera fear into submission with a softer approach. Get Out of Your Head

Do you want to be slim and healthy

Without Dieting? The Virtual Gastric Band, developed by Sheila Granger in the UK, is a weight loss program providing all the positive benefits of weight loss surgery without all the risks.

NO Dieting • NO Surgery • NO Pain • NON-invasive This technique utilises the concept of a ‘virtual’ gastric band and clinical hypnotherapy to retrain your relationship with food, giving very safe, very predictable results.

It sounds simple but so many people spend all their time thinking about something but never doing it. At some point you have to turn off that noise and come from a place of kindness and giving. When you come from a place of service you completely change the quality of your video.

It is a natural, organic process whereby the subconscious mind naturally and effortlessly makes healthier choices. You will be satisfied on much smaller amounts of food, consequently losing weight permanently.

Solve Their Problems

And, because it’s not a diet, you won’t feel deprived, miserable or hungry. This life changing procedure will decrease your weight and improve your wellbeing.

In a video, the time you have to grab someone’s attention is about 10 seconds, so if you start pitching or trying to close in the first few seconds they’re going to leave your page. So you need to stand in service. You need to be an authority and expert and give people what they’re searching for.

Connect

Book now and receive a personalised CD, reinforcing messages to bring permanent change in your eating and exercise patterns. Contact Christine Ford – Life in Sync Phone: 1300 661 074 Web: www.lifeinsync.com.au ADVERTORIAL

Think about who this product or service is for, connect with them and care about them. Every business transaction is about trust, respect and reputation. Think of your ideal perfect customer, think of the person, their name, and imagine them in front of you right now and you’re going to speak with them they are the camera. Have a true connection.

Not moving your business forward as quickly as you’d like?

after separating from my partner? Foremost in any decision by a Family Court is whether the proposed relocation is going to be in the best interests of a child. Although each case is different, there is a common thread that the Court system looks at in determining whether relocation is permitted. You must consider the following questions, not from your perspective, but from that of the affected child: n

Whether there are bona fide reasons for relocation;

n

If the current shared responsibility and residency arrangements are working well;

n

If the proposed relocation arrangements are vague;

n

Whether the relocation affects the relationship of the non-relocating parent and the child;

n

How extended family relationships with the child are affected;

n

Whether any previous Court Order referable to spending time with the child has been breached and/or the likelihood that the relocating parent will be able to facilitate the child spending time with the non-resident parent, i.e. the financial resources or the willingness to facilitate this.

n

Whether there is any support network in the relocating area such as grandparents.

Order. The recovery of any child pursuant to a court order can be a traumatic experience both for the child and parent, so it is essential that you always obtain specialist family law advice prior to taking this step. Please contact your accredited family law specialists Culshaw Miller Lawyers E: info@culshawmiller.com.au, W: www.culshawmiller.com.au T: +61 (8) 9488 1300

A sobering word of warning, if you do relocate without either the agreement of the other parent or an Order of the Court, the other parent may apply for a Recovery Order to retrieve the child/ children which may affect your ability to obtain the relocation

If you have separated from your partner, are you able to move away with your child? This question affects many parents after a separation and applying for a Relocation Order in the Family Court is a difficult area of the law to navigate without specialist legal guidance.
