WELCOME BACK TO FALL AT THE CLUB!
Mark Aboud, President
Mary Elizabeth Sullivan, Chief Operating Officer and General Manager
We are pleased to present you with a redesigned Granite News that showcases our happy transition back to Club life. With many exciting projects underway, this issue is full of updates and information to keep you in the know. The photos we have taken over the past year are particularly poignant as they chronicle the path we’ve taken as a community through challenging times. As we waited patiently for the gradual return to indoor activities, it was great to see Members enjoying outdoor dining and fitness classes. Members embraced the spirit of our modified operations, and your appreciation of what we were able to make possible was encouraging.
Thank you to all who took the time to complete the Member Pulse Survey earlier this summer. Your feedback helps us make informed decisions.
IMPROVEMENTS IN PROGRESS
Despite the various restrictions and closures over the past year, we are happy to report that several capital projects moved forward. The emergency Aquatics deck repair work is now completed and it’s been nice to see Members relaxing, enjoying light refreshments in this totally renewed space before and after enjoying family time in the Aquatics Complex.
The decision to commence the Food and Beverage renewal with the creation of the new 1875 Sports Pub has created a great deal of excitement. The project is on schedule, with demolition of the Regency Ballroom now completed. It is amazing how quickly things begin to take shape once construction begins. With the installation of a double wall between the construction area and the Active Therapy Clinic now completed, noise and disruption will be minimized. We have appreciated your patience as we completed these first steps in the renovation process. For those who were not able to join us for the Horizon 150 Information Session, we hope you will enjoy our feature beginning on page 14, which showcases the renderings of the beautiful new dining spaces being created for the enjoyment of the Membership. You may also view the Information Session, available on the website, where you will find regular progress reports as we work through this project.
We are making steady progress on the Garage Restoration Project and are on track to reopen the garage entrance late this fall. While this work has been somewhat disruptive, it is infrastructure work that is essential to maintain the integrity of this critically important facility, and we appreciate your continued patience as we see these phases through.
For more information on our improvements in progress including our photo gallery, please turn to page 28.
ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS
With the fall upon us, it’s time to come together for the Annual Meeting of Members. Please plan to join us virtually once again as we report on another complex year due to the pandemic. This year, we will celebrate two new inductees into the Granite Hall of Fame. This prestigious honour is bestowed upon Members who have demonstrated outstanding achievements or service.
OLYMPIC ATHLETES
As an athletic club, it is always a source of pride when one of our own succeeds. While it seemed touch-and-go that the Olympics would proceed amid surging COVID-19 case counts in Tokyo, we held our breath as Rachel Honderich and Quinn prepared to compete in the Summer Olympic Games. Our congratulations go out to both of these outstanding athletes, who gave us all even more reason to stand tall and cheer loudly, even if only from the safety of our own homes. To be able to watch young athletes exceed in this way is a privilege, and we extend our thanks and recognition to both Rachel and Quinn.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
As I complete my term as Board President, my sixth year of working with the Board and Management Team, I thank those with whom I have served. It has been a year of complexity that has required a heightened level of commitment and time as we constantly considered and responded to the effects of the global pandemic on our operations and finances. Decision-making was rigorous as we deliberated over what was best for the Membership. I appreciate the thoughtfulness, insight and care that was brought to the table.
My heartfelt thanks also goes out to the Staff who worked tirelessly over the past year to bring the Membership value, despite restrictions and repeated closures, and keep the Club readied so that we could return quickly when permission was granted. I know first-hand that while they made it look easy, it wasn’t, and I am grateful for the collective effort and thoughtfulness that went into keeping our community safe and engaged.
I would also like to thank the many Members who reached out in writing and in person to offer their thanks and support over the past year. It made a very busy and challenging time as President anything but a thankless job. Your kind words were very much appreciated.
The Annual Meeting of Members will take place virtually on Tuesday, September 28, at 6:00 pm. Please plan to join the Board and fellow Members to learn about the business and financial affairs of the Club over the past fiscal year. Chair of the Board Sue Belbeck will retire from the Board this year following six years of leadership. Sue served on most Board sub-committees and led as President through one of the most challenging years in our history. We will also honour new Hall of Fame inductees and celebrate the good news stories of Club Members from the past year.
Mark Aboud, President

HAPPY re TURN a
THIS PAST YEAR HAS PROVEN THAT THE GRANITE SPIRIT IS UNBREAKABLE
Despite challenges we’ve all faced, both individually and as a community, Members embraced the opportunity to come together in whatever way they could. From tennis to fitness, in-person dining and Camp Granite, our community spirit shone through. As we reflect on a year like no other, we look forward to the future with renewed hope, optimism, and appreciation for one another.

ATHLETICS
EXCELLENCE in motion
Normally, success to me means a Club full of people –in the gym, in the pool, taking classes, playing racquet sports. I tell the Staff their goal every day is to do one thing that exceeds the Members’ expectations. With this goal in mind, each member of my team works hard to ensure Members are able to take full advantage of everything Athletics has to offer.
GARY CARON DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
10 GRANITE NEWS / FALL 2021
A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER
Members were very engaged with the virtual offerings developed by our Staff when they couldn’t come to the Club in person. At their peak, each of the 36 weekly online group exercise classes averaged 85 participants, a testament to the strong relationships forged in the Granite community. While Members adapted to working from anywhere, they also embraced the opportunity to work out from anywhere.
The success of the virtual programs was a big win for our Staff, too, who stepped up to make the best of things during a difficult time. And while taking Fitness outdoors in the depths of winter seemed like a long shot, it was a time for firsts; a time to try new things to see what would resonate with Members. Outdoor Fitness opened with 55 classes, and several stations designed for personal workouts. When Members returned to the Club for in-person activities, the need for pre-booking yielded an unexpected benefit.
The whole team got to know the Members better than ever, because for contact tracing purposes we had to keep track of everyone who was on site. This served as a reminder that people are at the forefront of everything we do here at the Club.
LOOKING FORWARD
While the virtual offerings were successful, Members are really looking forward to a full return and the social aspect that’s been missing these many months. They also have a lot more flexibility in their schedules, as many are still working remotely, which will likely continue for a while. We are trying to flex with them. Members are also realizing that there’s more to life than work. So they will say “You know what? I’m going to pop into the Club for an hour and work out to take a break. I deserve to be good to myself and the Club is there to help.’’
Another key takeaway for us was the importance of mind training as critical for athletic success. More and more,
we are seeing the mental component of athletics coming into play as essential to overall well being. Attendance of the May virtual Train Your Brain Like an Olympian seminar with elite mental performance expert Jean François Ménard indicated that this type of offering was very helpful, not only for sport, but in other areas of life. Approximately 220 Members and 60 coaches attended the online event. Plans are underway for an in-person event with Ménard once permitted.
Athletics continues to evolve with Members, with Staff pushing beyond their comfort zones to help Members be the best they can be. Building on established relationships, while forging new ones, is incredibly rewarding. We heard from Members over and over again – “I miss the Club. I really miss the people.”
THE TENNIS PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION HAS ANNOUNCED THIS YEAR’S WINNERS AND GARY CARON, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS, HAS BEEN AWARDED THE TPA SERVICE TO THE GAME EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR HIS ONGOING COMMITMENT TO THE GAME. CONGRATULATIONS, GARY!

Clay court shoes have a herringbone tread, which allows for stability, sliding and traction, as needed. The bottom of the sole is a softer material than hard court shoes; this allows for flexible movement while sliding.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR RACQUETS AND THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU
Handle with care: Use an overgrip to keep your racquet handles fresh. Be sure to store your racquet at room temperature to maintain optimum string tension and durability.
When should you have your racquet restrung? Follow these helpful guidelines: Follow the Club’s tennis bubble schedule! or
Restring your racquet as many times a year as you play a week. For example, if you play three times a week, then have your racquet restrung quarterly.
HARD COURT SHOES
Hard court shoes offer more stability than clay court shoes and have specific pivot points for optimum mobility. Soles typically have a combination of tread patterns and are made of a stiffer material to withstand the court’s harder surface.
Hard court shoes with combination tread
CAN YOU PLAY TENNIS IN RUNNING SHOES?
The short answer is it’s not recommended.
They are not built for side to side movements and lack the required ankle support.
They don’t have enough grip and the soles are too soft, which can lead to slips and falls on the courts.

VISION BEYOND 20/20 MAKES WAY FOR HORIZON 150
When planning for the much needed first-floor food and beverage renewal project began back in 2014, Vision Beyond 20/20 was born. Instead of beginning work on the Grand Ballroom, the originally scheduled first phase, in January 2020, the year turned out to be one of reflection and reassessment. As we emerge from an extraordinary time in the Club’s history, we move forward toward the Club’s 150th anniversary in 2025 with a sense of fresh optimism and a new project name: Horizon 150.
14 GRANITE NEWS / FALL 2021
“After what has been a very difficult year, and with a hopeful view towards our 150th anniversary in 2025, the prioritization of the Food and Beverage renewal, starting with The 1875 Sports Pub will mean we will be enjoying this fabulous new space as early as next summer. As we prepare for a return to our favourite Club activities, this exciting news gives the Granite community even more to celebrate.”
15
MARK ABOUD , PRESIDENT
What this meant in practical terms was a change of sequence for the food and beverage renewal to reflect the needs of the Membership. The reimagined 1875 Sports Pub, scheduled to open next summer, is the result of this thoughtful consideration; a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor space. The pub will be the perfect place for Members to gather once again, and enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed, comfortable setting.
Leading the way to our 150th anniversary celebrations, the scope of work for the Club’s first floor dining spaces and back of house areas promises to deliver best in class experiences among the most coveted areas of the Club. With an abundance of light, beautiful views and flexible service solutions, the renewed spaces deliver functional efficiencies that are adaptable to a variety of situations.
As our happy return to Club life continues to evolve, project work moves forward with a renewed sense of purpose that will take us to our milestone anniversary with something to truly celebrate.
“...knowing that Members are eagerly awaiting a permanent home for The 1875 Sports Pub, it makes sense to make this the starting point. Feedback from both surveys and focus groups clearly indicates the preferred space for this venue has natural lighting and access to the outdoors.”
16 GRANITE NEWS / FALL 2021
MARY ELIZABETH SULLIVAN , CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER AND GENERAL MANAGER
"With our learnings from the pandemic, we went back to the drawing board, assessing and modifying the renewal designs with a different lens on health and safety. This wouldn't have happened in a "normal" year. The resulting innovation led to improvements we may not have thought of in any other circumstances."
“It is the priority of The Board not just to oversee operations of the Club at a high level, but also to ensure that we chart the best course for the Club and its Members in the future. To this end, the Club has a long history of making good investments which have paid off for our Members over the years.”
MARK ABOUD , PRESIDENT

DETAILS make the difference
When every aspect of the dining experience is done consistently well over time, the overall experience is one of positivity and comfort. This philosophy was turned on its head as our team found themselves with shuttered restaurants and Members cocooned at home.
We were faced with a very different approach. We have always been Clubhouse-focused and suddenly we were asking ourselves how we could recreate the Clubhouse experience in Members’ homes. We didn’t want to simply put the existing menu in a delivery box – we painstakingly took everything apart to see what would actually work, did lots of testing and only offered what would replicate the Clubhouse experience. We also carefully considered the environment and how it would be impacted by our use of takeout containers. Our detailed research led us to choose compostable packaging products, which would not have a negative impact on the environment.
And Members appreciated not having to cook, enjoying their Granite favourites when they couldn’t dine at the Club. The Lobster Night promotion sold out twice, and we received many calls from Members 30 minutes after receiving their order to say that it was outstanding. They were also grateful to be able to send food and gifts to loved ones when they couldn’t be there in person during special occasions. Hearing that touched us a lot and was very meaningful. That’s the kind of feedback that kept us going during a very difficult time.
During Christmas eve and Christmas day, more than 1,000 meals were prepared for curbside pick-up and delivery, a number fairly close to a normal year when Members enjoy holiday in-person dining at the Club.
We carefully planned and tested to make absolutely sure everything we did translated into an excellent takeout experience for Members.
ARJUN C. GOPI , DIRECTOR OF FOOD AND BEVERAGE
18 GRANITE NEWS / FALL 2021
RELATIONSHIPS CULTIVATED OVER TIME
A main factor in the team’s success is Chef Ashton’s long-standing leadership. Having been with the Club for two decades, his relationships with key suppliers ensures smooth running of Food and Beverage operations. Members also feel comfortable calling on him to develop special occasion meals that deliver culturally diverse experiences.
A NEW AND BETTER NORMAL
New processes, made necessary by the pandemic, allowed the F&B team to better plan our service. We are taking these learnings forward to add value to the Member experience. For example, having a more efficient reservation process means better planning and less waste in time, effort and food. With the creation of the new 1875 Sports Pub moving to the top of the
project list, we also took the opportunity to reevaluate the designs with a different lens on health and safety, based on the learnings of the past year. All of these innovations, borne of necessity, may not have happened in a “normal” year. The opportunity going forward, as we ebb and flow through changing circumstances, is to integrate these types of solution-based behaviours into our daily operations.
19
STORYTELLING
That’s what
compelling.
FLIGHTS OF FANCY
Normally, we would have never considered holding virtual wine events to explore wine or learn from winemakers, but faced with what seemed like an impossible situation, we unwittingly opened up a whole new way of engaging with experts around the world. This platform literally took us into their homes where they shared personal anecdotes, spoke about their journeys and connected us to the meaning of the vineyards they own and operate.
Since many winemakers can’t travel, virtual possibility meant we could still come together and travel to where we wanted to go, glass in hand, and with exclusive access to the world’s leading wineries in a manner that allowed for intimate conversation.
More than 2,000 Members attended the 40 virtual events we held, settling in from home, delighted to see each other, and happily raising glasses to their computer
cameras. Our guest list of superstars from the wine world included my personal favourites from New World wineries in Argentina, California and Australia, and the Old World’s storied growing regions in Italy and France.
Elevating the experience were carefully curated menus for some of the events, created by Chef Ashton, and offered exclusively to small groups of attendees. Members embraced these opportunities, creating home atmospheres that aligned with locales. Seeing each other in such a personal way actually created bonds that went deeper than friendships forged in our Grand Ballroom.
Expanding on the opportunities that technology made possible, I would like to see the Wine Society continue to broaden how we engage both with Members and the wine community, even when we can go on more amazing wine journeys in person.
To me, WINEMAKING is about
I find
We always go beyond the nuts and bolts of winemaking to get to the heart of the winemaker’s story.

Joining the Granite Club at such a pivotal time is an incredible opportunity for me. With over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, I cut my teeth on exceptional dining experiences right here, and my family ties to the Club go back several generations.

IMPROVEMENTS IN PROGRESS
Repair work and maintenance is always top priority at the Club, and with a view toward a seamless transition back to activity, this past year has been no exception despite intermittent closures. A strategic focus was placed on ensuring the Clubhouse was ready to welcome Members back as soon as it was permitted. This meant anticipating challenges in a very fluid and uncertain environment. The opportunity to work ahead on disruptive work also meant reprioritizing work when we were able to have contractors onsite. Large projects like the Aquatics Deck and Garage Restoration Project were started early to make progress while the
Club was quiet. Locker wet areas underwent renovation without interruption or inconvenience to Members, with refreshed facilities completed at reopening. Along with repairs and renovations, we also implemented improved and enhanced health and safety measures such as touchless door openers, plexiglass barriers and hand sanitizer stations, along with thoughtful distancing of seating and equipment. Staff tirelessly researched solutions that would best ensure the safety of the community.
Our commitment to maintaining this premier property remains at the forefront of our operational priorities.

PROPOSE A NEW MEMBER
Do you know someone who would enjoy all the benefits of Granite Club membership? Perhaps friends or family have enjoyed the Club’s facilities and events as your Guests?
A healthy waitlist is important to ensure new Members are joining, which offsets the annual attrition of approximately 170 Senior memberships each year. Entrance fees from new Members help fund exciting capital projects and a full Membership ensures annual dues are available to cover operating costs to continue to provide an enjoyable experience at your home away from home. The waitlist for Senior membership is currently 3-6 months. There is currently no waitlist for spouses of existing Members, candidates under age 30, or ages 70 years and over.

32 GRANITE NEWS / FALL 2021
celebrating our
GRANITE OLYMPIANS
The Club’s longstanding tradition of sport, competition and athletic achievement has manifested in many outstanding athletes who have honed their skills at the Granite Club. This spirit of excellence came to the forefront once again at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.
The Granite community celebrates the success of Members Rachel Honderich and Quinn, both of whom we hold high as champions, and as important role models to our young up-and-coming athletes.
Rachel first started playing badminton at age 7 in the Granite Club’s after-school Badminton program and quickly advanced to the High Performance Team. Her hard work, determination and competitive edge led her to dominate the provincial/national junior circuit.
Rachel transitioned to the senior circuit, specializing in singles and women’s doubles, winning Canadian National titles as well as a total of five Pan American Gold medals and two Silver. Rachel and doubles partner Kristen Tsai have represented Canada in competitions worldwide. With a world ranking of 22, they finished ninth overall in Tokyo.
A member of Team Canada’s gold medal winning women’s soccer team, Quinn began playing soccer at the age of five and was the first Canadian to play collegiately for the Duke Blue Devils. They played professionally for the Washington Spirit, Paris FC, and, most recently, the Seattle Reign FC. Along with the rest of Canada, the Granite community watched the final game against Sweden with immense pride as one of our own reached the pinnacle.
Congratulations to both of our outstanding Granite athletes!
