D-200 to purchase school buses D-200 bestows By ELIZABETH HARMON The Independent e Woodstock School District 200 Board of Education unanimously approved the purchase of six one-year-old used school buses at its June 16 meeting. “Our fleet is aging, and some of our buses are 20 years old. ese one-yearold buses have low mileage and are in excellent condition,” said D-200 Chief Financial Officer Risa Hanson. e buses will cost a total of $387,000, or $64,500 per bus, and will replace five older buses that will be sold as scrap for $500 each. e $2,500 in revenue will offset the purchase price for the oneyear-old buses.

“ is is a good thing, and I always find it surprising to see one-year-old buses available,” said School Board member Paul Meyer. Hanson said that year-old buses the district has purchased in the past were typically leased vehicles before being traded in. She said that the district has worked with the vendor, Central States Bus Sales of Big Rock, on previous occasions with good results. e buses come equipped with cameras, and the dealer has offered to add two additional camera systems at no charge, which can be installed on buses the district already owns. “ ese camera systems cost about $2,000 per bus, so it’s a bargain to get

Superintendent Mike Moan said the district has been in the process of updating the fleet a little at a time. “We try to do a little each year,” he said.

PRIDE awards to graduating seniors By JANET DOVIDIO The Independent Woodstock School District 200 bestows PRIDE Awards to outstanding graduating seniors each year. e acronym stands for Positive Recognition in District 200 Education. Achievement is acknowledged in seven areas: scholarship, personal achievement, vocational excellence, fine arts, athletics, school service and community service. Selection for a PRIDE Award is a comprehensive process that includes nomination, application, recommendations and selection by a separate committee for each award. e full Board of Education gives final approval. Valedictorian Sara Keesee will attend Georgia Tech. Salutatorian Riley Basarian will head to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Woodstock High School graduates were awarded $2,758,334 in scholarships. Valedictorian Jack Rischbach will attend the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, while salutatorian Sarah Semmen will study at Butler University.
