Grace Beattie, Swimmers recognized by City Council ISU, earns PR for the mile run By Kevin Lyons

ere is very little nuance in track and ďŹ eld recruiting. A 6-foot high jump in high school is a 6-foot high jump in college, and a 5-minute mile is a 5-minute mile — regardless of where it’s run. Get the athlete with the best number and convince them that, through years of focused improvement, the number gets better and better. at is the exact state of affairs for former Woodstock team captain Grace Beattie, who set a personal Paul Lambert record in the mile The College run against an elite ďŹ eld at Notre Report Dame’s Meyo Invitational Feb. 3. Beattie covered the mile at the indoor event in 4 minutes, 53.76 seconds, making her the ninth-fastest indoor miler in Illinois State history. Beattie also helped the Redbirds place sixth in the distance medley at the unscored event with a time of 11:53.15. Representing Woodstock at the Feb. 3 Pointer Invite, Judson University’s Lacey Heaver ďŹ nished eighth in the 800-meter run. Marian Central Catholic graduate and Loyola distance runner Abigail Jones turned in a ninth-place ďŹ nish in the 3,000 at the Windy City Rumble Feb. 3, turning in a time of 10:54.29. Wisconsin-La Crosse posted a runner-up ďŹ nish at the Minnesota StateMankato Ted Nelson Classic Feb. 3, thanks in part to a bronze-medal ďŹ nish in the high jump from Woodstock graduate Matt Haynes. Haynes cleared 6 feet, 4 1/2 inches in the event and UW-La Crosse scored 106.5 points. Minnesota State took the team title at 152. Men’s basketball Woodstock graduate Damian Stoneking grabbed an amazing nine offensive rebounds Feb. 3 to help Cardinal Stritch defeat Trinity Christian Please see College, Page 29

Two swimmers from the Woodstock Co-op Swim Team were honored Feb. 6 by the Woodstock City Council for their life-saving actions when a fellow team member had a medical emergency in the pool during practice. Woodstock Deputy Mayor Mike Turner presented Woodstock North senior Jake Maher and Woodstock senior Dylan Wolf with a city proclamation in recognition of the Jan. 26 incident when they rescued Jameson Teuber, who had a seizure and sank to the bottom of the Woodstock North pool. “Jake Maher and Dylan Wolf immediately assessed the danger presented and selessly dove in to rescue their imperiled teammate, resulting in the best possible outcome for the unanticipated situation,â€? the proclamation read. “... Actions such as those demonstrated by Jake Maher and Dylan Wolf are to be applauded and celebrated by their coaches, Ian Shanahan and Adam Steinken; by their school principals, Darlea Livengood and Justin Smith; by their teammates, students, families and friends; and by the entire Woodstock community,â€? Turner stated from the proclamation. Teammates, family, school

“Jake is a great kid who’s a captain and has been on the team for four years. We’re not surprised that these boys did all they could to help,â€? Stromquist said. “ e parents of Jake Maher and Dylan Wolf are lucky indeed to have raised these ďŹ ne young men who showed exceptional leadership, courage, strength and responsibility, acting quickly and effectively to save a young life, the very deďŹ nition of the term ‘Hero,’â€? the proclamation stated.
