SAFE PUPPY SOCIALIZATION

I

n this new world of COVID and dangers to us, many puppies are not getting the socialization they need to grow up with healthy social skills. I am also finding that, more and more, people are not taking their puppies out or beginning training before they get their last puppy shots at 16 weeks!

Up to 16 weeks is an incredible and critical imprinting period. Training and socialization must take place before that or we spend almost three times as much energy trying to stop unwanted behaviors that could have been prevented in the first place.

Just as important is the vision many people have about what socialization is. It is NOT having dogs together in a free-for-all until all the puppies are exhausted. Socialization means teaching your puppy to be respectful of other dogs and how to build TRUST. Just like people, we don’t tell the gas station attendant about our intimate health history. We choose people that we get along with, we show respect and ask for respect before we share exactly who we are. Puppies and dogs are much the same way. Some breeds are even less likely to trust one dog as quickly as another and we must respect that.

To properly and safely instruct your puppy in socialization before that 16-week period is up, there are several things you can and SHOULD do.

Have a safe, enclosed area such as a fenced-in backyard where there is little chance of there being Parvo or other diseases. This can be your yard or that of a friend.

Find older dogs or even puppies that are kind—that DO have good social skills.

Some older dogs do not like puppies. That is NOT the older dog to expose your puppy to. Have only one dog at a time with your puppy so no one is over-aroused or overwhelmed.

Each dog should initially be on a leash with their owner and able to sit and focus on their owner (good pre-training and skill-building is recommended).

Each dog should sit with their owner until the arousal is settled. When both dogs are quiet and comfortable and taking treats, then let them interact with the leash still on. You do not have to be holding it.

As they interact, watch each dog, giving lots of verbal positive reinforcement for kind behavior.

Walking about the yard is also a wonderful practice. Puppies will want to follow you, which will help ease the “pressure” of the social event.

Letting the leash drag is a very good way to let your puppy know that you have his back and will keep him safe.

Another great activity for pre-16-week puppies is a walk in an area NOT frequented by other dogs, which can spread disease your puppy has not yet been vaccinated for.

Walking together with another puppy or dog on a leash can help your puppy to feel safe and help you to keep control of the situation so the puppy does not run off.

Socialization can be done in a safe manner while paying attention to possible disease and other aggressive dogs. A few basic obedience skills, such as “sit” and “watch,” can help move the process along very successfully. It also makes your puppy healthy while keeping you safe, too.

hat a year it’s been! Thanks to all of my wonderful clients, I have had the amazing good fortune and opportunity to train nearly 100 Blaine County dogs and their owners since launching Rosy Rover Training last fall!

This October marked one solid year of instructing Puppy Passport Classes (and private trainings) focusing on socialization, fundamental obedience, and problem prevention for puppies.

The importance of socializing puppies (correct play, manners, different interactions with objects/people/dogs/noises/etc.), from ages 2-4 months, is critical to their becoming well-adjusted companions.

Besides ‘playing with puppies,’ I utilize Force-Free methods to teach basic obedience and manners to all ages of dogs, including many rescues who have received little to no training.

On the professional level, I finished up my Puppy Start Right Instructor classes. I also certified as a Service Dog Coach (a lifelong dream) after several intensive months of classes and service-animal task training. I am now coaching an amazing sheepadoodle-and-handler team who completed my puppy class last year, and continued on with mobility Assistance Animal training.

Dogs with their inherent ability and desire to learn continue to astonish me every single day.

After I began working with Ace, a newly adopted husky/border collie rescue puppy, last December, I soon realized he required new challenges to stay engaged in the training process. Once he learned basic obedience and manners, he continually challenged me to keep him interested. He loves to work and ‘needed’ a job!

This summer/fall, KPA Certified Professional Dog Trainer Elise Lufkin and I developed, launched, and co-instructed our brand-new class, Ace’s Jobs for Dogs Enrichment, to teach people how to engage with their dog via introductions into nose work, trick training, and agility. Ace’s Jobs for Dogs was developed essentially to help fulfill the needs of ‘working’ dogs through mental and physical needs and thereby enriching their lives and those of their handlers.

The biggest lesson that dogs have taught me is that life is extremely finite in the dog world. It is a daily reminder to enjoy each and every moment we have. The full life of a dog happens in about onetenth of our human lifespans. From potty-training to adolescence (yes, dogs go through it like our teens!), to the many vet visits over the years, and finally saying our goodbyes, owning and loving a dog means emotions magnified: hundreds of heartaches—but countless moments of the purest joy!

magine for a moment getting dropped into a family of cheetahs! Not knowing the cheetah’s language or culture, but wanting to live in harmony, would involve being taught by the cheetahs. It’s the same thing for puppies/dogs. They join a society about which they know nothing—ours!!

Dogs are sentient beings, able to feel joy, sadness, frustration and more. Over the last 10-20 years, knowledge about dog behavior and wellbeing has increased greatly, catalyzing new training approaches.

My work is grounded in the forward-thinking Tellington TTouch® Method of which I am a certified Senior Practitioner with 15 years’ experience working with individuals and teaching workshops for dog guardians and pet professionals. I integrate other force-free techniques and cues (commands) training as well.

TTouch is a positive, cooperative approach to training and wellbeing; presents solutions to behavioral problems; and can improve performance. It also helps establish a deeper rapport between humans and animals. TTouch is done with the animal, not to the animal.

The method is based on the premise that physical posture and balance are inextricably related to mental and emotional states. Specialized bodywork, movement exercises, special equipment and philosophy together create changes in behavior and an acceleration of learning.
