native of Hailey, Idaho, Caleb Meyer has always enjoyed the rugged beauty the Northwest has to offer. A graduate of Boise State, he continued his education through an apprenticeship with renowned artist Robert Moore.

Meyer compares his time in Moore’s studio to the laying of a strong foundation. “The painting process is like build- Silas Thompson, “Rising Grandeur,” oil on ing a house; a painter canvas, 48 inches by 48 inches. Meyer is now an established artist in his own right and features in public and private collections nationwide.

One of the gallery’s youngest artists, Silas Thompson has quickly become a familiar name amongst collectors. On annual backpacking trips with his father, he began to treasure the distinct birthmarks and icons of beautiful rivers, valleys and mountains that carve through the high desert and farmlands of the West. His desire to create work that evokes a memory continues to be a driving force, which pushes Silas to be innovative in his choice of subject matter and composition.

A longtime favorite of our clients, Steven Adams strives in his work to portray the elusive feeling of timelessness beneath objects that might otherwise seem commonplace. Preferring to paint a broken fence or a ditch to a majestic mountain, Adams endeavors to communicate the beauty in his subject matter and to haunt the viewer.

In a concurrent exhibition, Utah artist Shanna Kunz offers different interpretations of the landscape of her area through the use of a warm palette and the play of mood, light and color. Each location she paints is an encounter with the land, the trees, and the waters that give her a sense of connection and order.

Carl Rowe, an Idaho native, is known for his organic hillscapes whose sinuous forms are evocative of the human body. His chosen medium, alkyd, is a little-known paint that combines qualities of both oil and acrylic.

nown internationally for her photography, LOVE LETTER is Barbara Vaughn’s debut of two new bodies of work and her love letter to Greece, New York, and Paris. This thought-provoking exhibition presents a bold juxtaposition of real and surreal, and the resulting ambiguity invites viewers to unravel the mystery.

A former portrait photographer, Vaughn has photographed many luminaries in entertainment, business, and the arts. Her work has been published in numerous books as well as publications such as The New York Times, Time, Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Art in America.

enowned landscape painter, writer and sportsman Russell Chatham passed away on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2019, in California, after a long illness. He was 80 years old.

Russell Chatham – In Memoriam presents his artistic legacy through a presentation of paintings and lithographs spanning several decades.

Russell Chatham developed his painting style in studio as opposed to plein air (painting outdoors). He felt that translating what a scene felt like was more important than trying to make a copy of what it looked like. With minimal sketches and an experienced memory, he was adept and unique at translating this “sense of place.”

Also a master of lithography, Russell Chatham used as many as 50 separate plates and ink shades in creating one lithograph, consuming up to 180 hours of the artist’s and printer’s time.

Throughout the production of each lithograph, Chatham was involved in every phase of the process, beginning with the hand drawing of each plate. Every combination creating the subtle color shadings and tonalities required that Chatham meticulously choose each ink and approve each color as it is transferred from the plate to the special lithographic paper.

or 43 years, Gail Severn Gallery has decorated the Wood River Valley. Initially, Severn opened one of the original art galleries in Ketchum. She remembers the quiet days and the days of growth with equal fondness. More recently, in her impressive gallery in West Ketchum, she has done a brisk business amidst a lively gallery row.

“It’s shocking to look back to [the original] 300 feet, gallery and frame shop,” Severn said, laughing. “I sort of grew up in this town, and grew up with this business, too.”

A founding member of the Sun Valley Gallery Association, Severn has seen huge changes in how the business of art galleries has changed.

“Clear back in the late ’90s, the gallery model began undergoing evolutionary changes,” Severn said. “Technology has been a big part of that. And globalization, in the sense that art centers were on the coast, and a few urban areas, like Chicago. Then media and tech advanced fine art in places like Montana, Sun Valley, Aspen, and Santa Fe. There has been so much more coverage.”

Following the proliferation of art magazines, websites, social media and art blogs also arrived on the scene, further expanding the ways in which people could discover, shop for and buy art.

Art fairs became another way in which Severn spread her wings.

“People might see an artist in New York City, or San Francisco or Seattle, but then go to an art fair in Chicago, which is where our first art fair was, and see the same artist,” Severn said.”

In some cases, if a prospective buyer doesn’t find what they want, they can find it further afield.

“The artist Michael Gregory is a perfect example,” Severn said. “He shows in New York and San Francisco with major galleries, and with us. Someone might find the right piece

ilman Contemporary’s owner, L’Anne Gilman, and gallery director, Casey Hanrahan, have steered their business over the past 12 years with a certain élan. They began with the simple idea that they’d sell what they liked. They’d sell fine-art photography with a focus on fashion photography, and they’d work with emerging artists. But 12 years ago was also the heart of the lateaughts recession.

“We made it through the crash,” Gilman said. “There’s the obvious stuff you do to make ends meet. We adjusted our original plan, and we’re now trying to come back to that plan to represent emerging artists and photography.”

Gilman Contemporary, located on Sun Valley Road out of the way of other galleries, quickly became a draw by hosting opening parties and showcasing new artists.

“I opened my own gallery so I could show works that personally inspired me and in doing so connect with different, and ideally younger, collectors who were new to buying art,” Gilman said. “I wanted the gallery to be approachable and a place of discovery. I also wanted to show sophisticated art in a casual setting. I also wanted to do more ‘guest exhibitions’ for artists so that we continually kept things new.”

Initially, Gilman focused on emerging painters and photographers with a few established artists like Nick Brandt.

“Within the next year, I was able to bring on more fashion photography, which was my personal passion. This was in addition to more contemporary photographers, some of whom manipulated their work. I felt like there needed to be some education about value of this type of photography.”

Having Brant from the beginning attracted other bigname artists, which enabled them to attract more emerging artists.

“Then it fell into place,” Gilman said. “We were still an unknown, but there was a genuine excitement.”

In fact, they had a “fantastic start” and have maintained an edgy freshness ever since.

“We liked our artists,” Gilman said. “We were traveling. We didn’t feel indebted and we had more freedom.”

“That made it easier for us,” Hanrahan added.

CELEBRATES THE JOURNEY chances, and a preference for artists with an innovative approach to their mediums that sets them apart.

“The artists we’ve added over the years are younger, less experienced, with mid-range prices, including Ellie Davies, from the UK,” Gilman said. “We’ve loved her work for long time. It felt like now’s the time [to have an exhibition of her work].”

Gilman and Hanrahan both say their true mission is to keep it fresh and create a dialogue. “We are always looking for artists who have a message they want to convey,” Hanrahan said.

Some of these artists have grown in reputation and confidence since their initial association with Gilman, including the Slovakian photographer Maria Svarbova, who creates hauntingly still images of women in Socialist Era public swimming pools. Gilman has worked with Svarbova’s major shows for several years, and she will be in town for their anniversary show in July.

“She will blow this town up,” Hanrahan said.

Other artists they represent include Hunt Slonem, Isabelle Menin, Tom Chambers, and the late photographer Rodney Smith, a master of the fashion photography genre that Gilman began the gallery to show.

They became so close that when he died in 2016, Gilman spoke at his funeral.

“We have all made friends with our artists and with our clients,” Gilman said.

Changes in the business have happened swiftly in the past decade, too. “Online sales rose more than 30 percent in 2018,” Hanrahan said. “We ship everywhere from Russia to China to Mexico. It is all over the map.

“This has opened a door for collectors,” Gilman continued. “People have discovered us in other ways. A woman came in based on the recommendation of another friend who found us online. She liked Ellie Davis’s work.”

“It’s been an interesting journey,” Gilman said. “Our jobs are different. We work more now with affiliates, and manage work on other’s websites, and on our own.

There’s Instagram and other social media. We’ve learned a lot. I want to do this as long as I love it. I love the people I work with. Casey pushes me. We have a similar eye but we push each other out of our comfort zones.”

“As long as our team of artists are growing, that keeps us interested,” Hanrahan said.

ELLIE DAVIES ‘STARS’ AT GILMAN CONTEMPORARY

ondon-based photographer Ellie Davies’ ethereal series “Stars” combines her photographs of forests and woodlands throughout the UK with images taken from the Hubble Telescope. In the imagery dense, deciduous forests are dotted with twinkling lights that are otherworldly but also disarming and inviting. Davies interest in understanding the landscape and more specifically, humans’ interaction and perception of the landscape, shapes much of her work. She feels her work places the viewer in the space between reality and fantasy, hopefully encouraging the viewer to re-evaluate the way in which their own relationship with the landscape informs their identity.

Drawing on his southern roots, folklore, and feminist philosophy and imagery John Westmark’s mixed media paintings embody strength and struggle. His female figures are composed of sewing patterns on canvas. Westmark obscures the visages of his subject, creating anonymous and powerful women. The garment patterns in the

work are embellished with custom text from contemporary feminist writing and criticism, creating a conceptual narrative alongside the existing material “narrative” of imprinted assembly instructions.

site. They can sit home in the evening with their tea and search artists they like, or come to our site because they’ve seen someone we represent at a show. It gives them a sense of comfort.”

Severn said the gallery will continue to grow its services. There’s an opportunity to fill a real niche of things that people need. We’re in the process of getting our appraisal license for post-war fine art in Idaho. We’ll be only one. Most appraisers are in cities, and there’s a high cost involved to have them come out to appraise collections. Some people are aging out as collectors, and families have to decide what to do with their collections.”

“We are doing some new and interesting things, and having a staff with strong art history backgrounds, and the ability to add to the mix, is really important to me,” she said. “We don’t want to get bored, either. It’s always fun to be at art fairs and events, looking at the work, and seeing how many of our artists have gained strong reputations.”

The Sun Valley Museum of Art and the Sun Valley Gallery Association have helped to increase the sustainability of the community as a year-round place to live, work and visit.

“One of the nice things about the art world here is we all work together to promote the arts in general,” Severn said. “We have so many interests and

tastes, and we work together to advertise and promote. God bless Bill and Glenn Janss [founders of the Sun Valley Museum of Art], who knew we’d need a strong emphasis on visual and performing arts. We owe them a debt of gratitude.”

rederic Boloix will be featuring artists from Germany, Austria, Italy, and Cuba—artists known for applying paint on unconventional surfaces using alternative materials and/or techniques.

Illustrious Cuban artist José Bedia, in his depiction of the return of Moby Dick (this time confronting a battleship), paints with his fingers and creates dramatic effects by splashing acrylic on canvas.

Bedia’s inspiration comes from techniques used in tribal art from Africa and the Americas.

Austrian artist Martin C. Herbst uses shapes such as bowls, convex mirrors and crumpled aluminum to alter portraits in Renaissance portraiture.

Cologne-born American artist Rainer Gross sandwiches canvases together after applying thick layers of pigment and then pulls them apart, resulting in a highly textured, weathered look that reveals a myriad of colors and forms.

Italian artist Antonio Sannino paints oil on brushed aluminum and then coats the painting with a thick resin, enhancing the effect of moving water with the sun’s reflection mimicking the special iridescence of the waters off the island of Capri.

ood River Fine Arts has recently received new works from Colorado painter Ralph Oberg. Oberg’s varied landscape and wildlife paintings offer a glimpse into an artist who has spent his lifetime in the high places across the globe. A regular exhibitor at the Prix de West Show in Oklahoma City for decades, Oberg’s scenes strive to record the “last great places” before they are gone.

Ralph Oberg’s work has been included in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and the Briscoe Western Art Museum in San Antonio. Oberg has been a member of the Society of Animal Artists since 1982 and is a signature member of the California Art Club.
