Early voting started Monday in Blaine County and all voting will wrap up at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2. At stake are everything from contested mayoral seats, city council positions, school board trustee-ships, and millions of dollars for fire stations and town squares.

Yes, from Sun Valley to Carey, the entire Valley is affected by this off-year election, a voting day that happens between midterm and presidential elections and has historically resulted in low voter turnout.

Whether the jam-packed ballot of November 2021 changes that remains to be seen.

Improved Fire Protection Wood River Fire & Rescue (WRFR) is asking voters to approve a 25-year bond that will be paid by property tax revenues collected on residents who live in the area from the Greenhorn bridge to Baseline Road, not including the cities of Hailey or Bellevue. All residents of the fire protection district are eligible to vote, and it takes 66.7% of those who do to pass.

Fire district officials have spent the last several weeks offering up the bond’s selling points. They say the current two stations in Hailey are antiquated, too small, and do not allow a fast, effective response to emergencies. And that by increasing a property owner’s taxes by $72.60 per $100,000 over the next 25-

A yes vote means that you are OK with a property tax increase of $21 per $100,000 of property value over five years. That pencils out to be a less-than$100-a-year difference over the next five years. And it will take 66.7% of voters to say “yes” if the city is to A Town Square?

In Hailey, city leaders are asking property owners ever be reimbursed. to reimburse the city for the nearly $1 million used to year period, district residents will get a new fire station to replace its two old ones in Hailey. Additionally, Station 3 south of Bellevue would have its systems updated to last another 20 years.

State, private insurer at odds over animal control officer’s injury claim

The Bureaucracy That’s because the State Insurance Fund has denied the workers compensation claim for Ramm’s accident on Aug. 17, when toward the end of his shift he had stopped at an acquaintance’s home to use their restroom, and fell down a flight of stairs onto hard concrete. The state says the accident was not in the course of his law enforcement duties, and Ramm’s personal insurance provider says anything happening while on duty is.

According to documents provided by Janell Porter (Ramm’s daughter), an attorney representing the state is denying:

That the accident alleged in the Complaint actually occurred on or about the time claimed That the condition for which benefits are claimed was caused by an accident arising out of and in the course and scope of Ramm’s employment That the rate of wages claimed is correct

Essentially, the state has declined to enter mediation, which means Ramm’s family and Ramm’s insurer will have to take the State Insurance Fund to court. It also means Ramm’s private insurance provider is having a large hand in running the show.

“We find out on Wednesday (Oct. 20) whether they’ll require him to discharge or return home and continue all treatment as an outpatient,” Porter explained. “He will need long-term physical, occupational and speech therapies. We will also have to figure out home help so that Mom can have a break or be outside taking care of their property.”

The matter is not sitting well with other members of local law enforcement, according to Porter.

“Many of dad’s colleagues are voicing concern about this and the risks it may present for them if they are ever injured on the job,” Porter said.

It is painstaking and frustrating—perhaps only the second-most painstaking and frustrating matter the now-former Blaine County animal control officer and his family have to deal with these days.

What follows is a post from Porter’s Facebook page and a statement to Wood River Weekly she made via email.

“Vibra was amazing! Today, I got to go to the St. Al’s Rehab Hospital that he was moved to last week. I was able to hug him, hold his hand, participate in PT, and just spend time with him.

From the unresponsive person he was in August that they told us to start making end-of-life decisions to now is such a miracle.

Yes, he has more to go but I am counting this milestone as a miracle. He is gaining weight and strength; trying to talk more and relearn everything basically like a toddler at this point.”

An Overwhelming Choice Amber Weber, four St. Luke’s staffers given recognition in virtual celebration

Editor’s Note: In the next issue of Wood River Weekly, we will sit down with St. Luke’s nurse of the year Amber Weber and ask her about her role as a nurse and her MSN-Ed, BSN, RNC-NIC, NPD-B multi-credentialed career. Our hope is to gain an understanding about her concerns and her optimism going forward in healthcare after an overwhelming year. But for now, at least, we’re just standing up to applaud.

So, here’s a sports analogy that may help you take it all in.

Anyone voting on annual awards in healthcare during a pandemic probably feels a bit like a sportswriter trying to name the Most Valuable Player for the 1927 New York Yankees. Two players had identical .356 batting averages, but they didn’t even lead their team in the category. That player was Lou Gehrig who, in addition to batting .373, walloped 47 homeruns that year. And that was nothing compared to Babe Ruth, who blasted 60 round-trippers. They also had two ace pitchers, one who led all of baseball in wins and … You get Amber Weber, of Hailey, is St. Luke’s ‘Nurse of the Year’ winner. the idea.

So, one can easily imagine how difficult it would be to pick just one nurse for nursing excellence. It’s an overwhelming choice.

Yet, that’s how esteemed nurse Amber Weber is across the St. Luke’s Wood River landscape, where last week she won the 2021 Carl A. Gray Memorial Award for nursing excellence, an award given annually by the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation’s board of directors and the Harvey Gray family, who established the annual award in 1995 to honor Carl A. Gray, a well-known and avid Sun Valley Ski Club member.

“Each year the entire hospital staff nominates a nurse who exemplifies excellence in their nursing practice. The nursing staff then votes on the colleague, whom they believe is most deserving of the recognition. This year, Amber Weber was overwhelmingly the staff’s choice to receive the excellence award,” St. Luke’s spokesperson Betsy Mullins said. “She got 80% of the vote. That’s just never happened before.”

An Overwhelming Career In addition to her role as clinical educator for St. Luke’s Wood River, Amber stepped up this past year as the hospital’s lead for a local vaccination effort reaching out to hospital employees and the community at large—a balancing act of sorts considering a portion of the population’s angst toward vaccines in general and vaccine mandates in particular.

It wasn’t a role that was handed to her, nor was it a role she stepped up to fill.

“She spearheaded the whole thing,” Mullins said. “She organized it. She did everything.”

Based on the following colleague testimonials regarding Weber, the nurse performed heroically: • “Amber goes above and beyond her job and she does it remarkably well. She is very organized and always on top of what needs to be done despite having millions of irons in the fire.”

• “Amber is never afraid to jump in at the bedside when her expertise is needed. She even comes from home when the call is critical. Wood River is so lucky to have an experienced NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) nurse in house as those emergencies are few and far between in our critical access hospital and her skills are always sharp. Amber has been an incredible addition to the (St. Luke’s Wood River) team, and her excellence has touched everyone at our facility and beyond.”

• “Amber has been a beacon of positive energy this past year. She has managed to inspire us, educate us, and organize a whirlwind of activities, not the least being an incredible effort in vaccinating our community. Amazing is not a big enough word!”

An Overwhelming Year According to the American Medical Association, the pandemic has been brutal to the healthcare industry. Between May 28 and Oct. 1, 2020, using the AMA Coping with COVID-19 for Caregivers Survey, 42 healthcare organizations across the U.S. assessed their workers’ stress during the pandemic. The survey of 20,947 physicians and other workers found that 61% of those surveyed felt high fear of exposing themselves or their families to COVID-19 while 38% self-reported experiencing anxiety or depression. Another 43% suffered from work overload and 49% had burnout.

Stress scores were highest among nursing assistants, medical assistants, social workers and inpatient workers—such as nurses, respiratory therapists, nursing assistants and housekeepers—as well as among women, Black and Latinx healthcare workers, the report found.

“But odds of burnout were 40% lower in those who felt valued by their organizations, which was 46% of respondents,” the AMA said.

“As we continue to navigate challenges and a range of emotions associated with the pandemic, this was an opportunity to honor the work that our nurses do each and every day,” said Megan Tanous, St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation chief development officer. “Our nurses exhibit integrity, compassion, accountability, respect and excellence in everything they do every single day at St. Luke’s Wood River. Their dedication, perseverance and resilience has been exemplary throughout the pandemic.”

A million-dollar school board program to ease the pain of housing costs in the Valley could spell relief for roughly three out of 10 school district employees.

Blaine County School District trustees unanimously approved the plan last week after a special committee was quickly assembled to do something to make it easier to recruit and keep employees.

It could put $500 a month ($6,000 a year) in the pockets of BCSD employees to go toward paying rent.

Of course, there will be some paperwork hoops to jump through first. Employees will have to document an “adjusted” monthly income, which takes into account other household income and additional expenses like daycare and student loans. Employees will also need to submit rent and utility bill information that allows the district to determine one’s “housing burden”—a benchmark that’s met when an employee is using 30% or more of their paycheck to cover rent and utilities.

The district said priority will be given to employees with less than three years in the district since they tend to be at lower pay grades and since the shortage of housing in the Valley is making it hard to recruit new talent.

Hailey Builds Up Its Green Team

The City of Hailey kicked off its new fiscal year by adding two staff positions to the group charged with ensuring that city projects are environmentally sustainable. Now, the city just needs to fill those spots.

The so-called “Resilience Team” is made up of city department heads, division managers and elected officials. It is charged with developing, recommending, supporting and finding funding for the policies and programs that help achieve the sustainability goals identified by the city. Specifically, the two new staff positions are: • City Planner/Resilience Planner • Grant Writer/Resilience Implementation The eventual two new employees will have subject-matter expertise and the ability to advance a range of environment-friendly goals, including: clean energy, energy efficiency, green building and community design, water conservation, mobility, green fleets, green city operations, sustainable materials management, climate resilience, federal, state and local grants. Successful recruits will assume other duties which enable the practical and direct implementation of the sustainability goals and policies within the day-today operations, communications and policy development efforts of Hailey city government.

YMCA Welcomes Special Climbers

On Oct. 30, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., up to 20 people with special needs will be invited to climb the rock walls at the Wood River Community YMCA in Ketchum. Reservations and registration are required.

Local first responders and members of the Idaho National Guard are also invited to join “as we try to lessen the fear these friends may have of people in uniform,” a press release from McCall-based Courageous Kids Climbing said.

The organization provides free opportunities for people with special needs to experience the various forms of rock climbing at events held in the western United States. Climbing has been shown to help children with intellectual challenges by providing them the opportunity to enhance their ability to focus and practice their problem-solving skills.

Getting Lassoed, Fictionally

ditor’s Note: Before I begin this issue’s 4th Estate column about a great piece of satire currently on TV, I need to address my mediocre bit of satire from the Sept. 22 issue. In it, I wrote about the reasons men— specifically, socially conservative men and/or men who are just plain anti-abortion—should OPPOSE the new abortion laws in Texas and soon-to-be proposed (and likely adopted) in other red states. Apparently, since the reasons were not satire, the overriding point (that if you can’t see how unfair these laws are to women who don’t want to be pregnant, at least see how they are also unfair to literally anyone who has anything to do with women who don’t want to be pregnant) did not play as satire for some.

I know this because someone I’ve known for seven years suddenly—I assume—thinks me a misogynist.

“That article makes me anti-male. (vomit emoji here) I *thought* you were a good writer!” she wrote—I hope satirically because she just got married to a male—before giving me the death penalty on at least one form of social media.

I wrote back because I really did care and I assured her it was satire. But before hitting “send,” it occurred to me I may be assuming she was pro-choice. So I told her if she was anti-abortion, then she should please consider that I am for the financial incentivizing of both adoption and vasectomies since I take no pleasure in the idea of destroying what can *potentially* become human life with

protected rights.

Crickets. Ghosted. Oh well, I tried. And that brings me to Ted Lasso.

Ted Lasso—a hit, and now Emmy-winning—show available on AppleTV, really does bring me to tears (the good kind) in nearly every single episode in its first two seasons on TV. I’ll spare you too much background storyline, but in a nutshell (I could hear Ted using that phrase), Jason Sudeikis revives a character (Ted Lasso) he played in a skit from “Saturday Night Live”—that sometimes-funny, sometimes-not-funny show that makes a lot of assumptions about flyover country (the red states) that’s sometimes spot on and sometimes not. Ted is an American football coach from Kansas with … Here’s what I told my friends on Facebook who assumed otherwise: “Yup. I think it’s a pretty good show. A bit sappy, but well played. A bit ‘could never happen in real pro sports’ but provides enough context to suspend disbelief. It has three-dimensional characters with story arcs. And it walks the line between American obnoxiousness and New World consciousness just right ...

“Ted’s Americanism is set up to make us expect the played-out joke, but there’s an intellect behind it beyond some privileged Americana good will and moreover an

obstacle he has to overcome outside of the soccer universe. The cultural differences they show are not THE joke, they are the setup to the moral of the story. His character walks the line between simplistic naivete and simple focus on what matters most. He is the ultimate psychologist-coach who can make rivals and underdogs get along and excel, while being totally incapable of keeping his own family and love life healthy and whole. Not everything can be award-worthy, Sorkinesque, groundbreaking creativity. Nor so should it be.”

What Do Potty Training And Heel Have In Common?

THE “WEEKLY” FISHING REPORT FOR OCTOBER 20 - NOVEMBER 2 FROM PICABO ANGLER

T

he weather forecast looks beautiful and steady throughout the week, with colder daytime temperatures and likely some snow moving in over the weekend. Anglers will need to adjust their tactics accordingly.

No matter where you fish, when the weather changes, concentrate angling efforts during the warmest parts of the day, and look for fish in typical winter holding lies—soft current seams, slow deep pools, and calm tailouts. Be sure to start dressing warmer under those waders and be prepared for shorter fishing windows.

Silver Creek south of Highway 20 remains open until the end of November. Trout are actively feeding to pack on the pounds before winter. Dry-fly activity is limited to the late afternoon, but anglers should expect small Baetis (BWO) and Midges along with some October Caddis and Mahogany Duns. Throwing streamers to deep dark water and undercut banks will attract plenty of fish. The old adage of “bright day, bright fly and dark day, dark fly” seems to hold true.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with your favorite streamers! If you see brown trout spawning, please leave them alone. This means seeing fish over cleanswept gravels that are actively spawning.

On the Big Wood River, Fall Baetis and Midge activity remains strong in the late afternoons from about 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. October Caddis are found in decent numbers north of Ketchum also in the afternoon. Try a large H & L Variant this time of year. It is a great fly to search with or to drop small nymphs from. Nymphing will be extremely productive throughout the winter months. Go-to double nymph rigs include large Rubber Legs, Princes, Hare’s Ears, and Copper Johns followed by more diminutive imitations such as black or red Zebra Midges, Pheasant Tails, Rainbow Warriors or Brassies. Sculpin imitations such as olive Buggers, Zonkers and Sparkle Minnows fished on a slow swing effectively imitate the numerous sculpin found in the Big Wood River.

This technique will yield quality over quantity as the biggest fish eat the most sculpin.

The upper and lower Lost River are running low; a lot of walking from one deep pocket to another will be necessary.

However, if you are looking for solitude and scenery, this may be the spot for you. Similar to the Big Wood River, Fall Baetis activity can be found in the afternoon, with nymphing being productive throughout the day.

eems like an unlikely duo, really. However, I have observed this for so long, and then all of a sudden I had this epiph-

I tell my clients over and over to make sure their puppy learns to go potty on a leash. It is critical to being able to travel with your dog. Some dogs will hold urinating for up to 12 hours—or MORE—when travelling if they have not been taught as a puppy to potty on a leash. This can lead to lack of drinking, dehydration, and bladder infections.

What I failed to mention was that while potty training, you must take your puppy to the spot where you want the puppy to potty, on the leash, carrying your puppy if necessary. Then, you must stand there and not move or let the puppy go potty outside the range of the leash. The end of the leash is the end of the leash. The owner must act like a post and not let the puppy drag them where the puppy wants to go. In the real world, there may not be options to find a large space for your puppy or dog to go.

The first advantage to this training is that your puppy will learn to go anywhere you need her to go when you need her to go. This is wonderful when you travel!

The second advantage is that you can actually teach your puppy WHERE you want her to go in your yard or nearby areas off of your manicured lawns and gardens.

The third advantage is that you teach there is an end to the leash. Your puppy can then learn that pulling while learning “heel” gets them nothing. There is no advantage to pulling to get somewhere. It is so easy to just stop moving while leash training if your puppy has figured this out during potty training.

No pulling means going forward at the heel.

If you follow your puppy around while they find a place to go, they learn that pulling on the leash has lots of advantages. They can sniff, and they get to go where they want, and your puppy also learns that she can potty wherever she wants!

If you allow your puppy to take you places to potty at this very young age, it is called imprinting. When this behavior is imprinted, it is VERY hard to stop leash-pulling during the heel. Pulling becomes a very big problem. YOU have unintentionally taught your puppy to pull while potty training! YIKES!!!

I am a HUGE proponent of prevention, and

leash-pulling is something you can prevent in the very beginning. How you potty train is a major influence in teaching the heel. Sometimes, even the simplest things can have amazing good or bad long-term effects. So, GO FORWARD, but don’t!

ummer, when we are in the midst of it, can feel like the whole world. Like it is a time without end. The daily routine of sun-stoked heat and the valley winds and the dryness of the dusty sage is a rhythm that we settle into so deeply that it can be tempting to lose track of the arc of the year, to forget how much this valley changes as we move annually between summer and winter. Aside from an occasional thunderstorm or two, each day in July or August tends to feel a lot like the day before.

In October, though, summer can feel like the kind of faint dream that, upon waking, seems to move away from consciousness even as you try to remember it. I can hardly picture it, already. Did I really used to leave the house in the morning without a jacket?

Was the sun really that high in the sky?

It feels like it happens fast, and it does happen fast.

There is nothing so constant as change, but that change is not consistent. At this time of year, close to the autumnal equinox in late September, the pace of change is relatively rapid. We are losing nearly three minutes of daylight each day right now—that kind of thing adds up over the course of a week.

Temperatures slip down, and there’s always a storm over the horizon.

All of this results in more darkness, less solar gain, and more cold.

The colors in the changing leaves were quite stunning this year, and it is such an annual gift that we receive in this valley to be able to live in a place so ablaze with ne-

on-bright oranges and reds and yellows. But, make no mistake—these colors are all the result of the trees grimly and sternly preparing for the dark and cold that is yet to come. This is preparation for a hibernation of sorts, but it is nothing like a warm and cozy sleep.

Autumn is a time of intense movement and preparation in the worlds of the creatures that live here.

I find myself in a lot of odd places at this time of year, wondering about signs of where these animals have been and where they are going. Tracks in the snow. The grass pressed into a round depression where elk slept under the boughs of a Douglas fir. A spray of dirt.

The sudden smell on the breeze that unmis-

takably says “they were here” but leaves little clue of where they’ve gone.

The faint crack of a stick in the distance.

Moving animals? Or just the wind?

It’s hard to say what is on the mind of the animals living outside during this time of change. We humans take note in our own way—in the fall, we might feel a transition as the mornings become colder, and we may take note of a frost and the need to cover the garden. But, the stakes are a lot lower for us.

I can turn away and walk off of that windy ridge, before the oncoming storm, and head inside.

ne of the most rewarding public experiences I have had in a while was volunteering to dispense information, be alert for emergencies, and share our local hospitality to the tourists lining the sidewalks to enjoy the Trailing of the Sheep Parade on a chilly but clear Sunday. While I felt colder than I would wish, even in October, I realized the next morning when I awoke to inches of snow that we were lucky to have sunshine for this celebration.

I was fortunate to be part of a unique event that is truly representative of a community that showed its best that day. Although I have voiced similar praise in previous columns, I was full of gratitude that I live where I do. Even amid local tensions due to COVID, a lack of affordable housing, and an insidious resentment of some of the “newbies” moving to our Valley, I experienced again the gentleness of people, the evidence of senses of humor, the pleasure of talking with eager children, and an overall sense of belonging.

A couple of years ago, during the same activity, I encountered one particularly hostile person with a large dog. Big or small, for safety reasons dogs should not be around sheep and their canine herders, especially with crowds and small children. One was that I was able to joke with some of the crowd. When I said the sheep were heading to California, a cowboy-hatted gentlemen asked me, “You mean they are going to walk all that way?” I couldn’t resist the imp of humor residing in my mind, and answered, “Oh, well, they aren’t going to L.A. Otherwise, they’d be in limousines.” He chuckled along with me at that image.

Another was when several times women noticed my feet clad in a cute pair of black sneakers and some “gold” adornment, very comfortable and a kick to wear. This attention stimulated some lively discussions with women from all over, such as North Carolina, Texas, and several in a Pocatello travel-for-adventure group. All seemed to be enjoying the celebration and were full of friendly praise and pleasant conversation.

I left the event with a smile and intention to volunteer for this every year, even though I live right along the route and can comfortably watch this kind of parade from a chair on my deck. Easy, but not in any case better than mixing with a hospitable and good-natured crowd at an unusual and quite special Idaho event.

I don’t feel sheepish at all admitting how much I appreciated the day and my shoes made for walkin’.

Become Your Own Guru

know all of us would love to have the world return to some degree of sanity, but what does that look like for you? Only you can determine what makes sense and resonates with your own inner being.

I would like to give you a bit of a history lesson.

In the days of Moses, when the people were freed from the Egyptians, Moses went to the Mount and received the Ten Commandments—great guidance on how to live a happy life. When Moses came down from the mountain, all of the people had reverted to worshipping the Golden Calf. At that time the planet was in the sign of Taurus (the bull), a little bit of influence there from the astrological sign governing the planet at that time. From there, we went into the Piscean Age; this became the age of worshipping the one God. The sign used for Christianity was the fish (a little influence there from the astrological sign). We have now moved into the age of Aquarius, which stands for emancipation, independence, equality of the sexes, innovation and technology. This is where we are. It is time to give up being dependent upon something outside of yourself. I would love to tell you that some magical being is going to come rescue you from this chaos but, as I see it, we must become our own magical being. As long as you wait for someone else to give you truth or your purpose, your power is outside of you.

So, how do you become your own guru? You start by declaring your sovereignty, your freedom.

If you are letting someone or something fill you with fear, then the fear has all your power. That is the last place you want to place your energy.

According to Greg Braden, we have about 50 trillion cells in our bodies, with each cell having an electrical potential of .07 volts. If you do the math, that means you have 3.5 trillion volts of electrical

potential in your body. What if you learned how to direct and use that energy for healing, manifesting abundance, love, joy, laughter. Again, where your focus goes, energy flows.

What if we started to acknowledge that we have this power rather than stay trapped on autopilot at the same old level of reality. I know we can do this.

After all, we are now in the age of Aquarius and we can change our experience from worshipping a God outside of ourselves to realizing that God is within our cells. We just have to activate our connection. Activate your connection with your breath. At least three deep breaths in a row bring you to your heart space. Do this several times a day, and say out loud, “I am free, I am sovereign, I am God within.” You have the power!

Get over old belief systems that cause you to give your power away. Just start. Put your focus on all that cellular energy that is inside of you. Learn to use it, and you can only do that with practice. Start with your breath, and your declarations. Expect to see change. Take control of your health and your body. Be mindful of what you put in your body.

Give your body, your heart, and your thoughts your focus. Use your energy for all of the innovations you would like to see—anti-gravity cars, perfect health, a planet that is cherished and blessed.

Let’s all start the practice of using our 3.5 trillion volts of energy to create a better world out of this chaos.

Elk Hunt

My friends were city dwellers. They were hunter wannabes. So they drew a late fall elk hunt. Here’s the story they told me.

The morning snow was on the ground. We gulped down our last bite. Our bellies full of scrambled eggs and coffee black as night.

We’d drawn our tags six months ago, the elk hunt of our dreams.

Our guide was checking all our gear, so surreal, it seemed.

I heard the guide make mention, “Let’s go easy on these guys.

They both look like they’re nervous. I can see it in their eyes.”

How could we fail this outdoor guide? He seemed to know so much. But we were fragile city boys, and hunters out of touch.

Our guide had surely pegged us. We were not tough hunter men.

We both were soft as Twinkies ’cuz each day we pushed the pen.

We started at a slower pace but sweat fogged up our glasses. The camp cook called us overweight and slower than molasses.

The days flew by with nothing but the blisters we’d been branded.

We were running out of time and prob’ly leaving empty-handed.

We wondered what our wives and kids would say to no elk rack.

Hopefully they’d all agree it’s good to have us back.

But then our guide stood pointing at two bulls just up ahead. He whispered, “Better hurry, boys, it’s time to fire some lead.”

We might be city boys, but we were practiced deadly shots.

We’d both go home successful. No more stomachs tied in knots.

Our guide was there for skinning and said, “Please don’t waste the meat. Enjoy what we’ve been given. This will make your hunt complete.

“And realize, before our time, men would hunt to stay alive. So count your many blessings while you’re working nine to five.”

ith midterms coming to an end at the University of Idaho, I have been working alongside the Office of Multicultural Affairs in preparing for DACA Awareness Week, which will be held the first two weeks of November.

Last spring, I was able to put together the first ever DACA Awareness Week at the U of I and had a couple of speakers, including DACA recipient and lawyer Luis Cortes, to speak about their experiences, their journeys and current thoughts on governmental approaches to immigration reform.

This year, after recently coming back from Washington, D.C., a second time, I hope to crucially express through speakers and socials the importance of the immigrant community and what they do for this country. Citizenship for all has been a number one priority for myself and many others who live and witness this fear of deportation and continuous hate toward our community and I am extremely grateful to have the support system on campus to help me do so.

on los términos intermedios llegando a su fin en la Universidad de Idaho, he estado trabajando junto con la Oficina de Asuntos Multiculturales en la preparación de la Semana de Conciencia de la DACA, que se celebrará las dos primeras semanas de noviembre.

La primavera pasada, pude organizar la primera semana de conciencia de DACA en la U de I y tuve un par de oradores, entre ellos un recipiente de DACA y abogado, Luis Cortes, para hablar sobre sus experiencias, sus viajes y las reflexiones actuales sobre los enfoques gubernamentales de la reforma migratoria.

Este año, después de haber regresado recientemente de Washington, D.C., por segunda vez, espero expresar crucialmente a través de oradores y sociales la importancia de la comunidad inmigrante y lo que hacen por este país. La ciudadanía para todos ha sido una prioridad número uno para mí y muchos otros que viven y son testigos de este temor de deportación y odio continuo hacia nuestra comunidad y estoy extremadamente agradecido de tener el sistema de apoyo en el campus para ayudarme a hacerlo.

Elite Restoration celebrates 5th anniversary

ost of the time, people aren’t happy to be calling Elite Restoration. But they’re usually happy after they have.

Elite Restoration is who you want to call if you’ve had a disaster at your home or business. Fire, mold, water, wind or radon may be the issue and for five years now, in the Wood River Valley, Elite Restoration is where you go for help.

“We don’t always meet people in the best of circumstances,” said Jeremy Petersen, president of Elite Restoration. “People can be in a state of distress when they’re dealing with these issues and we try to be the calm in the storm. That’s why it’s super-rewarding to be able to help people in need.”

Elite Restoration was founded in Twin Falls in 2009 and its mission to provide exceptional costumer service has allowed the business to expand to five locations across southern Idaho, including Bellevue, since 2016.

The company now employees over 125 professionals, specializing in fulfilling insurance requirements in four main categories: restoration from fire and smoke; cleanup from flood, water and wind damage; remediation for mold issues; and testing and remediation of radon.

Combined with their other company, Petersen Brothers Construction, which was established in 1971, Elite Restoration has become the “go-to” business for almost any remediation, reconstruction or commercial construction needs in the region.

“We do everything from restoration to commercial construction,” Jeremy explained. “We’ve got the experience, the equipment and the team to get any job done and we pride ourselves on doing the job well.”

Great customer service is the foundation of their success, Jeremy said, adding that having a strong staff makes that possible.

“We’re a very family-oriented business,” he said, as over 20 members of the local Elite team celebrated their five-year anniversary recently at their office and shop on South Main Street in Bellevue.

The Petersen family has been associated with quality construction in southern Idaho for over 50 years now.

Jeremy’s grandfather, Perc Petersen, founded the family business and Jeremy is now the third generation to lead the company. Part of what Jeremy and his team most enjoy about the construction field, especially the restoration aspect, is that it always offers something new to deal with.

“Every time, it’s a new challenge and we enjoy that,” Jeremy said. Elite Restoration and Petersen Brothers are always trying to be on the cutting edge of the industry by tapping into the latest technology and advances.

An active member of The Chamber since they first opened locally, Elite Restoration is a very “community-minded” business, as Jeremy explained. Their staff has been part of everything from Hailey’s Days of the Old West Fourth of July Parade to helping out at the annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot.

“We care about the community and always put our customers first,” Jeremy said. “Communication is the key.

Good communication with the client and the insurance provider helps make sure that the owner is satisfied and that we’ve done our job well.”
