Advocates Help Victims Find Their Voice And ’Hood March 5 event to showcase nonprofit’s critical Valley role

acilities and programs set up to protect victims of domestic violence and families experiencing homelessness typically are not the setting for feel-good stories or long-term hopefulness. They are more typically temporary bastions of safety from challenges society sometimes struggles to solve or even to face. But at The Advocates in Hailey—the headquarters for providing a safe place for people affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking in Blaine, Camas, Custer and Lincoln counties—positive vibes are not pollyanna.

That’s because the multiphase expansion The Advocates has been undergoing since last year is not only moving along ahead of schedule and on budget, but making a significant impact on the region, too. That difference is perhaps felt most by the people without a safe place to live due to domestic violence or other abuse who are on waiting lists for temporary housing. Last year, The Advocates’ backlog topped 20 people. Today, there are just three people waiting to take up shelter there.

“We are thrilled that the waiting list has gone down,” said Shannon Nichols, director of Development & Engagement for The Advocates.

Specifically, there are now 16 transitional housing apartments that have provided a safe place for 35 adults and 49 children to heal and move from a life of abuse to a life of freedom and independence, the organization says. Clients work with a case manager from The Advocates who helps determine what their monthly rent will be—always less than 30 percent of their income in rent. The typical range is from $50 to $600. People eligible for transitional housing need to be free from abuse, have a connection with The Advocates and be working toward their self-identified goals. Units are available to all genders and pets are welcome, too.

“Being able to expand our transitional housing is key, but so many people first need the other types of support we can provide,” Nichols said.

If These Walls Could Talk That support Nichols refers to is broad. Founded in 1991, The Advocates offers a wide variety of services, such as life skills training, legal assistance, and safety planning. Prevention education staff teach people of all ages how to build and maintain healthy relationships through workshops on communication, bystander intervention, consent and more. And just last weekend, at the Limelight Hotel, The Advocates’ teen intern program called Every Teen Counts presented a seminar on healthy dating and relationship practices.

On March 5, The Advocates will be hosting what they are calling the “If These Walls Could Talk Orientation”—an open house, essentially, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., showcasing their public space that opened last year at 211 S. River Street in Hailey. Other organization properties are shelter for victims of abuse, so those locations are not made known.

“What’s unique about The Advocates building is that it’s a public office space. We don’t want to be hard to find. We don’t want people missing out,” Nichols explained. “This presentation is the first step for people who are interested in volunteering, or a great way to learn more about The Advocates and the resources that are available to people who have experienced domestic violence, sexual violence, or stalking in our community.”

The Triumphs Of Triumph

From gold production to bankruptcy, this little town has a big history

welve miles north of Hailey, on the East Fork of the Big Wood River, lies the unincorporated community of Triumph. Triumph was the location of the Triumph Mine, discovered in 1881 and that saw its first year of production in 1884.

Over the next 20 years, additional claims were grouped together, operating at 14 different mining companies, with the Philadelphia Mining and Smelting Company in Ketchum processing all the ore from Triumph. The Triumph Mine is located in the Warm Springs Mining District just over six miles northeast of Gimlet on the north side of the East Fork in the Wood River Valley and is a lead, silver and zinc mine.

The largest mining district in the Wood River Valley was the Warm Springs District. Three major mines supported this district, with these mines being the North Star, the Independence and the Triumph. Geologist C.P. Ross, with the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology, credits the district with over $3 million of combined metals from 1880-1902. The Triumph Mine was the greatest producer of all the early Wood River mining properties combined.

During the early 20th century, activity in the district gradually decreased and from 1902-1926 the district produced 6,069 ounces of gold, but with most of this production being produced from the Triumph Mine. In 1927, the Triumph Mine was re-opened by the Triumph Development Company, but before 1930 made its arrival, Triumph merged with both the North Star and Independence mines.

Seven years later, the Department of the Interior, under control of the War Department, stepped in to expand the Triumph Mine, building new offices, warehouses, a modern sink float mill, as well as a main tunnel 1.5 miles into the mountain. Shortly after, the Triumph Mining Company was formed, employing 200 men, with the mine operating 24 hours a day, but it was during the peak of WWII that the mine held the world record for zinc produced.

Records show that from 1936-1940 there were 409,458 dry tons of zinc produced, with a total net smelter return of $3,315,976.31. Production continued at a rate of 300 tons per day until July 1957, and it is recorded that $25 million of silver, zinc-ore and lead were produced from 1884-1957, while from 1932-1959 a total of 70,570 ounces of gold were produced. Other production records show for both the Mineral Hill and Warm Springs mining districts that from 18801970, more than 132,000 tons of lead, 135 tons of copper, 95,400 tons of zinc, four tons of gold and 828 tons of silver were produced.

From 1957-1959 the ore bodies were mined out and the mine closed. Incidentally, 1959 was also the year that silver, zinc and lead prices fell to half the WWII price while union labor also began demanding higher wages and, upon the closing of the mine, records show that from 1884-1957 there were 890 acres of mining operations, totaling 52 claims.

Sharon Blondin, Bellevue High school graduate of 1959 and resident of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, remembers her father, Albert Pascoe, going to work for the Triumph Mine when the Minnie Moore Mine closed.

“I remember the cave-ins and the people who died there,” said Blondin. “Mining was a tough way to make a living and it took a tough person to do it.”

Blondin, born in 1941, was from a large family, with seven siblings.

“We were poor,” says Blondin. “But everybody else was, too, so it was no big thing in that day and age to be poor, because most of the people were poor; they were miners and we were all miners and when the mines were closed down because so many people were killed, then there was no work. It was a hard life.”

he formed the Triumph Mineral Company and became a Blaine County Commissioner, working the mine for 20 years after the Triumph Mineral Company began mining in 1970. House’s hope was to extract the value from the tailings left behind. The Mining Law of 1872 didn’t require the cleanup of mine waste and it wasn’t until the mid-1980s that the Idaho Legislature adopted mining reclamation laws.

Triumph wasn’t just home to the mines, but was also the birthplace of former World Cup alpine ski racer and Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street, born at home on April 3, 1971.

he Sun Valley Film Festival has announced that Amy Poehler will receive the 2020 Vision Award, which is presented to an industry icon whose contributions to the art of entertainment have changed the industry for the better. The award will be presented at a private Patron’s Vision Dinner at the historic Roundhouse Lodge, on Saturday, March 21.

Poehler is one of Hollywood’s most versatile and sought-after talents with credits including that of actress, writer, executive producer, and bestselling author. She is best known for her starring role on the Emmy-nominated NBC comedy series P ​ arks and Recreation​. Her portrayal of Leslie Knope earned her a 2014 Golden Globe award for “Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical, or Comedy,” the award for “Best Actress in a TV Comedy” at the 2014 American Comedy Awards, and a 2013 Gracie Award. For her work on the show, Poehler also received six consecutive Emmy nominations, two additional Golden Globe nominations, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations.

She currently serves as co-creator, executive producer, and the lead voice of FOX’s animated series ​Duncanville​, co-hosts (alongside Nick Offerman) and serves as executive producer of ​Making It and serves as executive producer of the Netflix series ​Russian Doll.

Actor Winston Duke will receive the SVFF Rising Star Award on Thursday, March 19, in recognition of his breakthrough talent in the film industry. His recent film Nine Days premiered at Sundance and will be a special screening at SVFF. Duke made his feature film debut as M’Baku in Black Panther, reprised that role in Avengers: Infinity War, and most recently starred in Jordan Peele’s, Us. Award-winning filmmaker Eliza Hittman will receive the Pioneer Award, presented by Variety on Friday, March 20, in recognition of her work as an industry innovator that embodies the trailblazing spirit. Her latest film Never Rarely Sometimes Always, starring Sidney Flanigan and Talia Ryder, premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival where it received a special jury prize and will screen at the festival. Focus Features will release the film this spring.

Ann Druyan, creator of COSMOS, will receive the National Geographic Further Award on Saturday March 21, which recognizes a leader whose work is uniquely innovative, timely, and impactful— someone who has boldly pushed the boundaries of his or her field, and who serves as an outstanding ambassador for that breakthrough work.

As reported, the festival will open on March 18 with a special presentation of the documentary RUTH—Justice Ginsburg in Her Own Words, with Oscar®-winning director and Sun Valley part-time resident Freida Lee Mock attending. It will close on March 22 with The Last Shift director Andrew Cohn attending for Q&A following the screening.

f you ever ride the Blue or Valley routes on the Wood River Valley’s Mountain Rides bus system, you’ve probably met Hortencia Aguilar.

Hortencia has been a full-time driver for the company for more than 12 years and loves her job. “I truly appreciate my job,” she said. “I can support my family and I really enjoy helping people safely get where they’re going. A lot of people don’t drive and really rely on us.”

Hortencia’s dedication to her job is evident in her almost not-to-be-believed sterling work history: she has never missed a day of work and has a perfect safety record. Add to that mix that she commutes every day from Dietrich and sometimes has shifts that start as early as 5 a.m. in Bellevue and it’s clear what an asset she is to this community.

Hortencia usually works five days a week, Monday through Friday, and usually on the Valley and Blue routes. These two routes wend from the south Valley up to Sun Valley, out to Warm Springs Lodge, Elkhorn, and back to Hailey. So, basically, Hortencia interacts with everyone from daily commuters to students to guests visiting for a highly anticipated ski vacation. She likes them all. For her regulars, Hortencia knows where they’re getting on, where they’re getting off, and always remembers their stop, even when they may be spacing out and forget to request it. “I always make the stop when I know one of my passengers needs to get off because a lot of people are trying to get some work done, are sleepy, or are just not paying attention. I know where they’re going and I think they appreciate that!”

For guests to the Wood River Valley, Hortencia acts as a de-facto community ambassador. “Whenever anyone boards the bus, I make sure to ask them where they are going and confirm that they are on the right bus. If they are not going where I am going, I let them know which bus they need and where to catch it. If they are coming with me, I make a note of their stop and remember exactly where they need to go.”

Hortencia said visitors always express their gratitude for the service and professionalism Mountain Rides provides. “They love coming to Sun Valley and are always happy to have an easy and convenient way to get where they are going,” she said. “I don’t think that’s true everywhere.”

Driving makes Hortencia happy. Hence, the willingness to undertake her commute and then get people throughout the Wood River Valley from point A to point B and back again. Her husband originally taught her how to drive and she credits him with believing in her, staying really calm, and having a great attitude when she was learning. “I had never driven before and was scared but he always said, ‘You can do it!’”

Hortencia’s first driving job was the yellow school bus for Sun Valley Resort that is used for various events and guest needs. She really enjoyed that experience, and when a friend suggested she apply at Mountain Rides, she was up to the challenge. She has never looked back.

Originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, Hortencia has lived in Idaho 25 years. When she is not working, her focus is fully on her family. She and her husband have four children, two studying out of state and two busy at home with activities, school and

friends. She also spends much of her time with her parents, brothers and nieces who also live in the area. She loves that most days she is finished with work at 3 p.m. and home by 4 or 4:30 p.m. so she can be with her family for dinner and help with homework. She likes to cook and says her carne asada is an especially big hit with her family.

At work, Hortencia is known for her warmth but also her professionalism. “When I am driving, I really am focused,” she explained. “It’s my job to keep people safe and get them where they are going and I make sure I am always taking that seriously. During the holidays and the summer there is a lot of traffic and people are counting on me. I always greet people and wish them a happy day, but I don’t talk to passengers a lot when I’m driving.

My concentration is on the road. I put my attention on where we are going and what I am doing.”

Five questions for Hortencia: WRW: Do riders ever ask funny or strange questions?

HA: Not really. People usually just ask about routes, if they’re on the right bus, things like that.

Our riders are very polite. Sometimes I can tell with my regulars that they’re not that excited to go to work Monday morning or something, but no one really complains.

WRW: Have you taught anyone else how to drive? How did that go?

HA: My husband and I taught our older children how to drive. That was a little scary because I see a lot on the roads when I am driving the bus and I want them to be safe. But we tried to be patient and positive. If you yell at them, they are afraid and make mistakes.

WRW: What’s your favorite way to spend your down time?

HA: Definitely with my family. Like when I’m at work and I am totally focused on work, when I am with them, I give them all my attention. I really like to play with my 8-year-old daughter and just spend time with everyone.

WRW: What is your favorite Idaho season?

HA: I like spring! I can’t wait for everything to be green again so I can spend more time outside. I love to walk in the spring.

WRW: Do you have any pets?

HA: Yes! We have two little dogs, Maya and Stitch, and a cat that the kids took in who doesn’t have a name. They call her Kitty.

Triumph Mine, extensively drilling and exploring the mine and tailings. The Getty Mining Company records show $45 million in gold left in the tailings piles.

Eventually, the government deemed that gold wasn’t a strategic metal and so it was of no interest to the War Department, and by 1988 requests to develop and subdivide Triumph were set in motion. Blaine County requested the Department of Environmental Quality investigate the area of Triumph. The DEQ performed one site investigation before turning the case over to the Environmental Protection Agency Hazardous Waste Site Unit, which listed Triumph as a potential hazard.

In the summer of 1991, the EPA conducted tests, checking levels of heavy metals in the soil, groundwater, air, and the tailings pile, and in October, EPA officials began informing residents of high levels of lead in their drinking water and high levels of arsenic in their soil.

Residents and children of Triumph gave both urine and blood samples over a three-year period to determine lead and arsenic levels in their bodies, but after the three-year study was finalized, the test results didn’t show any acute levels of arsenic or lead. The EPA allowed the State of Idaho to work with mining companies in implementing a cleanup rather than opting into the Superfund, since the 1993 proposal of the Superfund was rejected by both officials and residents in Blaine County.

In 1997, another soil study was conducted, with one sample showing 52,410 parts per million of lead and was the highest reading in Triumph. According to EPA standards, 400 ppm is considered hazardous in high-trafficked areas or around children; otherwise, the threshold is 1,200 ppm.

By 2003, the mine was plugged to prevent debris and contaminated water from flowing out of the mine. The DEQ reported the flow from the mine was reduced from up to 200 gallons per minute to up to 20 gallons per minute. It is estimated that $16 million was spent in remediating the mine’s tailings.

In 2007, the Triumph Mineral Company was sold to Carl Massaro, who renamed the company the Triumph Land Company. Massaro’s vision was in building a small solar village on the site of the old mill with a large solar collector but the vision never came to fruition. The mountain was sold in 2008 to DeNova, but the Triumph Land Company still owned the tailings, and in 2015 a second plug was installed at the mine.

In 2018, the Asarco Mining Company filed for bankruptcy, paying the DEQ $1.7 million to clean up the mine. The cleanup area covered 60 acres, which included the mine tunnel and tailings.

According to the EPA, one million cubic yards of black sand was left over from the mine, constituting a health hazard because the sand was laced with lead, zinc and arsenic while the water from the mining area has an orange tint.

On May 29, 2018, Advocates for the West partnered with the Idaho Conservation League in sending a notice with intent to file suit to the State of Idaho. The notice to file suit was in regards to the Clean Water Act in belief that the state committed violations at the abandoned Triumph Mine. The Clean Water Act requires monitoring and cleanup of polluted water from mining sites before water flows into surface waters.

On September 14, 2018, Advocates for the West filed suit against the Idaho Department of Lands for illegally discharging arsenic and other pollutants into the East Fork without a federal permit.

By October, a settlement was reached and on November 27, 2018, the court approved the settlement.

Both the DEQ and DOL applied to the EPA for a CWA permit and now regularly monitor the ground and surface water quality at the site. They have also installed warning signs near contaminated waters and have evaluated the need for additional fencing.

Today, Triumph’s population is less than 50 residents, with many only being part time. Many of the old mine workings can still be seen, and still standing today is the old miners’ barracks converted into a residential home while old weathered outhouses still dot the landscape of Triumph.

here is kismet in the air. Within a couple of weeks, the Wood River Valley will be graced by two members of an extended family of legendary musicians. First up, appearing at the Argyros Performing Arts Center in Ketchum, on Saturday, March 7, will be Carlene Carter, the daughter of June Carter Cash and her first husband, Carl Smith. Following that will be her stepsister Roseanne Cash, daughter of Johnny Cash and his first wife, Vivian, on Sunday, March 8.

Carter grew up surrounded by the first family of country music, in Tennessee. Her grandparents were Ezra and Maybelle Carter, whose cousin Sara was married to A.P. Carter, Ezra’s brother.

Together A.P., Maybelle and Sara arranged, wrote and performed country music that was close to the ground, born in the red dirt of Tennessee, and eventually recorded by the Victor Talking Co. in 1927 as The Carter Family. Over the ensuing years, The Carter Family has included an evolving cast of characters that eventually included Mother Maybelle and her three daughters, June (Carlene’s mother), and her sisters, Anita and Helen.

Carlene Carter began her career singing with The Carter Family at 17, and has been releasing music for more than four decades. She’s on a short tour now with a two-person backup band, and a new album soon to be released, “The Carter Family.”

“There are five generations of us playing on that,” she said in her warm Southern voice. “Two generations have already passed. It’s an interesting record, and not normal—oh, this is a single for the radio—it’s an event kind of record. My cousin Lori, my brother John Carter Cash, and I, other cousins, at the end we sing ‘Will The Circle Be Unbroken.’” [Though there is an original version, the seminal one was written by A.P. Carter and released in 1935 by The Carter Family.]

“We’re together, still carrying on the legacy,” Carter said. “There’ll never be another record like it. My grandmother said to me, ‘When we’re gone, you have to keep the music alive, for Sara and A.P., too.’”

Carter will be on the road for a couple of weeks, including a stayover to hang out in Sun Valley, before going on to more shows in Oregon.

“I tell a lot of stories,” she said, laughing about her shows. “I never know what it’s going to be, stories about the family—I can do that like crazy. I try to include the audience. They’ll have fun, and I may not be back. I’m not exactly a spring chicken.

“I like to go places people don’t go and play that much. They appreciate it and have a good time.

I’ve done Carnegie Hall and big theatre, but I like meeting all the people. Country people are my people.”

Carter said she received the key to the City of Sun Valley about seven years ago when she was here for an anniversary trip with her husband.

“I was really flattered,” she said. “We went skiing and had a wonderful time, stayed at the Lodge.”

Carter spent a few years on the road with John Mellencamp on his Plain Spoken tour, both as a support act and joining him on stage nightly to perform duets. She also played a role in the touring production of “Ghost Brothers of Darkland Coun-

“One of my grandkids is a bass player, and one is playing drums. My daughter was more pop, now she’s kind of coming around. They are kind of coming around to our legacy, the music. My sister Cathy’s son is Thomas Gabriel. I didn’t even know he could sing!”

Carter’s father was Carl Smith, also a country music star, but his influence was of a different nature.

“He didn’t talk about the music. He wanted to be a cowboy,” she said. “He became a gentleman rancher, and a cutting champion. But he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and he came out and sang duet with me, which was quite a feat.”

Her stepfather, Johnny Cash, and June Carter provide inspiration aplenty.

“Big John gave me my first electric guitar when I was about 11,” she said. “He knew I wanted one.

My cousin David and I wanted to have a band. Another cousin had a rehearsal spot for us to play in.

They all still play music.”

Carter said she didn’t know she could even sing until a time she was brought up on stage to sing, standing between her grandmother and aunt Helen.

“I was so excited my leg was jiggly,” she said, laughing.

Carter recently moved back to Tennessee from California, where she’d been for many years, to a home near the Carter Smith house, where she grew up, with Mother Maybelle in residence, too.

“I’m loving being there with my dogs and my birds,” she said. She also loves the easy access to all the music Nashville has to offer.

“I missed it. When my oldest granddaughter turned 16, I said, that’s it. I moved back. Now I’m around music all the time. Hopefully, I’ll take a break, do some songwriting on my guitar while I’m there in Sun Valley.

“I was just on the Outlaw Country cruise, and got to play and be with all sorts of people. It’s one of the best. Everything was excellent.”

Putting The Fun In Sales Funnels, Hopefully

dmit it. You’re on Facebook more than you admit. It’s OK. It’s actually a business tool, you know. Facebook is not just for food pictures, vacation brags and political rants anymore.

You’re probably starting to notice the pattern. It goes like this: 1. You see a sponsored ad that speaks to something you’ve been thinking about, researching, shopping for.

2. The ad promises a free tip on that thing you’ve been thinking about, researching, shopping for.

3. So, you click it.

4. You then get taken to a video of someone “not selling” you anything; just from the kindness of their heart they are giving you free information within the confines of a brief four-minute video.

5. But of course their information is so effective and so incredible, they can’t possibly share all of the important stuff in a quick four-minute video. So they tell you where to go to purchase the deep-dive version.

6. Do you buy it?

Number six is up to you, but numbers 1 through 5 are what’s called a sales funnel. The term is not foreign to traditional advertising, but with the advent of social media and the relatively low cost of advertising there, we’re getting inundated with it. And, as stale and annoying as some of those ads may be, they work. They also have—as one might imagine—a slightly different, hipper? moniker: click funnels. Thanks computer mouses.

Whether you want to start a business by prospecting

buyers via social media or you already have a business and you’re looking for an alternative, cost-effective advertising tool, click funnels are worth understanding.

Demographics The first thing to understand about click funnels is that the content is typically a “proven expert” or “firsthand user” promising—err, offering—a solution. No surprise there. What is a surprise is how that solution happened to be something you’ve been looking for. As you should know by now, your Amazon searches, the pages you like on Facebook, and the cards you fill out to win that new truck they somehow drove and parked in the inside of a mall, “track” you. Sometimes it can feel creepy—the other day I was writing about Vancouver and now my Google Chromecast screensaver shows Granville Public Island once a day. But it’s basic demographics. If I’m a white male, 50s (but I feel 29), seeking affordable hotels in Canada, Airbnb is going to start sending me offers.

If you are spending one penny on social media advertising, make sure you understand the power of using demographics to pinpoint your audience and generate qualified leads. From there, make sure the content is presented in a way that catches the attention of that demographic.

Scalability Yes, social media advertising is significantly cheaper than traditional advertising and significantly easier to find your niche audience. But for the businesses or entrepreneurs who use click funnelling successfully, they did not find success through click funnels alone.

real-time business. They developed a reputation as an expert—not just by blogging but by delivering on real projects for real clients. They held seminars for free just to get their name out there. Then they charged for those seminars once they were in demand. They spent a lot of money on this, and a lot of patience developing it. Then, once they had “proof” of their successes, they took their offer online. And instead of charging 50 people $500, they charged 5 million people $1. Do the math. That’s called scalability.

So, whether you are selling the next best workout regimen or a foolproof marketing tactic, understand that click funnel success is more than just a click of the mouse.

or the last few years, this country has been divided into two warring factions on seemingly every topic under the sun, further impeding our progress for the future. It appears that whatever the subject is, we Americans can devoutly argue the merits of one side versus the other.

Sure, politics and religion have always been the most popular topics to fume about with staunch convictions of knowing the truth and what will be best for all concerned. But now there are other equally demanding subjects to address, such as climate change, sexual abuse and the “Me, Too” movement.

Then there’s immigration, a border wall, family separations, Black Lives Matter, wolves, ecology, forest fires, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, locusts, education, health insurance, taxes, driving skills that evoke road rage, banks… did I mention wolves? And, money, money and more money problems!

The list goes on and on. I don’t venture out much anymore because it seems one will get involved with a combative citizen with a different point of view, which will anger you to the very core of your being.

Thus, I’ve adopted a formula in which to engage these varied forays into heated debate with my fellow man. To every stated belief I simply reply: (“oh”). You’re not going to change anyone’s mind in the brief time lapse you spend entering into a discussion with another at Atkinsons’, buying Temptations for your beloved feline. Better to say (“oh”) and move on down the aisle.

This works marvelously for such statements as: “Republican conservatives suck!” My retort? (“oh”). “Bleeding heart liberals suck!” Once again, (“oh”) will handle it. “Hey, Mike Pence has been named to address the coronavirus pandemic in America” (“oh”). “Adam Schiff and Nancy Pelosi ought to be shot! (“oh”).

You can’t stand it—your President of the United States of America is Donald J. Trump! (“oh”).

“Well, I hate wolves!” (“oh”). “The BLM is corrupt!” (“oh”).

ow is the time to get out and hit our local waters!

The weather forecast for the next week looks fantastic; high temps will be in the mid40s every day. Fishing on the Big Wood, Big Lost, and Silver Creek should be very good, and expect to see excellent numbers of midges on all waters. Some Blue-Winged Olives have been showing up lately as well, and that hatch will get stronger as March progresses.

Silver Creek has been uncharacteristically clear all winter, so the dry-fly fishing this month will be wonderful. As mentioned, midges are the name of the game at the moment, and BWOs will become more important. Since the creek is so clear, long, light leaders (6X or 6.5X) are required when fishing midge imitations. Productive patterns include Griffith’s Gnats, Tie-Down Midges, Stuck Shuck Midges, Parachute Midges, and Zebra Midges, all in sizes 16-22.

For BWOs, have a good supply of Film Critics, Last Chance Cripples, and Hackle Stackers in the same sizes as mentioned for the midge patterns. Streamers are still effective, particularly on overcast days or early and late in the day. It’s hard to beat a Coffey’s Sparkle Minnow when fish are aggressive, and a small black woolly bugger works when the creek’s trout are a little shy.

Kilpatrick Pond has been fishing well for float-tubing anglers, and all usual access points on the creek have been productive.

The Big Wood and lower Big Lost rivers really come into their own during March. The Wood River Valley’s version of “March Madness” is the midge activity on these rivers. On calm, mild afternoons, these rivers see hordes of midges, and lots of rising rainbows. These fish can be found along current seams, in foam lines and eddies, and in the slower tailouts of pools.

Approach these rising fish as you would on Silver Creek; long, light leaders and stealth! When fish aren’t rising, the March nymph fishing can be spectacular. Pattern choice doesn’t seem to be as critical at this time of year, but it’s hard to beat small Zebra Midges, Brassies, and Rainbow Warriors. Keep your eyes out for little black stoneflies and BWOs as well.

Another fishing option is the South Fork Boise River below Anderson Ranch Dam. Expect to see similar conditions as on the Big Wood and lower Big Lost.

March is a great month for local anglers. Get out and enjoy some of the finest fishing of the year!

Forever Leashed?

ince our recent mountain lion attacks upon dogs in the Valley, I go out with my dogs every time they are outside. Even during the day, a few weeks ago, there was a mountain lion spotted and captured on video just two blocks from my home! Even though I own big dogs, I am very cautious and so are most all dog owners throughout the Valley.

But, last night, I was once more reminded that we have another predator that we don’t often think about. Many times we don’t see them as something to concern ourselves with. I was out with my dogs about 11:30 when I heard an owl very nearby. When I did some research on the Internet, I discovered that the hooting I heard was that of a territorial nature. I’m not sure which species of owl it was.

Until my research, I honestly believed that the biggest concern for our small-dog communities was eagles and some hawks. It appears that the eagles are able to pick up and carry away dogs that are up to about 5 pounds. An owl, however, can pick up almost 20 pounds!

I have a neighbor with a small dog that is out unaccompanied by the owner several times a day, including at night. The owl I heard was in their direction.

Owls are a very real threat for our smaller dogs. As I did more research, I saw videos of dogs as large as Havanese being attacked by owls. Several of them ended up losing their eyes or having other serious wounds.

It is our nature in this Valley to allow our dogs to be free and walk ahead of us on the trails, or be loose in our backyards, thinking they are safe. This simply is not true. Obviously, smaller dogs are at much higher risk for sometimes fatal attacks.

Years ago I was backpacking up Greenhorn with our dog Lucy when a badger ran out and headed straight for her. Lucy was about 25 pounds but was walking so nicely next to me… ON A LEASH. The badger was headed full speed toward her, but then realized I was there. It stopped and returned the way it came. WHEW! That could have been a disaster for both Lucy and me!!!

Many of us feel safer with a larger dog, but we must also realize there are much larger predators, such as mountain lions. We forget or are not aware that many moose have killed dogs in Hulen Meadows over the years. Elk can do the same. Many of my clients have had bears in their yards, even in their HOMES! We live in a wildlife interface area. Some of us experience the local wildlife in our yards if we are observant. Many of us don’t see the

elusive night creatures that surround our homes. As dog owners, it is our responsibility to keep our dogs safe. Little dogs are of particular concern, but larger dogs are, too.

Please, PLEASE, don’t be cavalier about our lifestyle. On a busy trail your dog might be the vision of the next meal for our wildlife.

Watching Snow

now is a strange substance.

It should be simple. Snow is just crystallized water, and water is something we are quite familiar with. Water makes up a huge part of our diets and our bodies. Water is something we all touch and drink and interact with multiple times daily. It is one of the most foundational requirements for life (as we know it), it is one of the most significant shapers of our human history, and it may be one of the most central touchstones of literature and poetry and art and imagery that we have in our culture—water is everywhere.

And most of us aren’t surprised that water can freeze and crystallize. We see frozen water on our windshields on cold mornings, we slip on it in the driveway, and we even make it in our homes to add to our drinks.

Ice forms on the creek outside my classroom every night, at this time of year. Ice hangs from the ends of gutters. We make it, plentifully and at will, when we want a sheet of it to skate on. In the winter, at least, it’s something that we see every day.

So, water isn’t surprising to us. And frozen water isn’t surprising to us. Snow, which is just tiny little crystals of frozen water, shouldn’t be surprising, either.

Yet, it is.

Two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. A darn simple molecule. But there are some fascinating properties built into that tiny arrangement. For one, the angles at which the hydrogen and oxygen atoms align themselves create very specific shapes when the water molecules freeze, and this makes ice crystals very reliable at forming six-sided shapes. snow crystals—the beautiful, tiny works of art that we have all seen, formed in the sky.

Once snow is on the ground, all sorts of bizarre things can happen. Newly-fallen snow tends to be very fluffy. And by fluffy, I mean that it’s mostly air. Typical powder snow might be only 10 percent snow by weight— the rest is air (warmer snow is much denser, and much less fun to ski in). But as it sits under the radiation of the sun, and as wind blows it back and forth across the landscape, and as the heat from within the earth (don’t forget that there’s a whole bunch of magma down there) slowly affects it from the bottom up, those snow crystals change and metamor-

phose into all sorts of new configurations.

Snow can become as hard as concrete— hard enough to walk or ski on top of without making a dent. It can get piled up by the wind into bizarrely-shaped cornices that hang meters high. It can become scoured and twisted around on the ground, forming strange grooves and ridges across otherwise flat ground: “sastrugi.” When it’s protected from sunlight and wind, it can rearrange itself into odd new crystal shapes: sugar snow, or facets.

Strange stuff, indeed. Even in a low snow year like this, there’s plenty to watch in the snowpack.

The Wall Street Journal has stated that by 2022, women will own more than 60 percent of the wealth in the country. For a multitude of reasons, this trend of growing economic power held by women is expected to continue.

Over the next 40 years, women are expected to inherit $28.7 trillion in intergenerational wealth.

(Forbes) 96 percent of women have a primary or shared responsibility for family financial decisions, and women drive nearly 80 percent of consumer purchases through buying power and influence.

(Forbes) Women are the primary income earners in 40 percent of U.S. households. This percentage represents nearly a 400 percent increase from 1960.

The political power of women is also growing. According to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, there are apparent gender differences in voter turnout: “In every presidential election since 1980, the proportion of women who voted has exceeded the proportion of men who voted.”

As women gain in areas of wealth, education and political governance, the connection between their financial and political franchise will continue to strengthen.

We highly encourage you to research for yourself how damaging 5G can be to you and your children. If you do, we are confident that you will join us in demanding a moratorium on 5G until it has been proven safe.

Waiting To Be Rescued T

here is not one of us on the planet who has not wanted to be rescued from aspects of our life at some time or another. We play that “if only” game with ourselves. If only I had more money or a relationship or a better relationship. If only I were thinner or had bigger boobs. If only my parents had done things differently, my life would be better. I would not be suffering now.

I have come to know that I am the person that must rescue myself. As a matter of fact, I am the only person who can rescue me because I am the one that created each of the situations that are bringing me frustration. My unconscious thinking or belief systems allowed the negative outcome for whatever seems lacking in my life.

What is your self-talk like? Are you constantly complaining to yourself about your job or your boss or your relationship? Do you take negative potshots at your body? Well, just stop it unless you want more of the same energy in your life.

What you think at a core level is what you are going to get. If you can train yourself to find something joyful in your life to focus your attention on, you will change your energy and change the

reality you are creating.

You don’t have to be joyful about your boss, you just have to be joyful. Focus on a beautiful tree or bird. What you have done is change YOUR energy and with that you change your reality.

I was talking with a young woman who is just about to receive her Ph.D. in April. She was having a terrible time with her medical internship director because she wanted to do things her way, not the director’s way. We talked about her finding something positive about her director, even if it was just nice fingernails. Anything positive will work if you change your attitude.

She gave up needing to have it her way and looked for something to be positive about with her director. I received a text from her the next evening saying she had a wonderful day at work and thanked me for calling her on her B.S. When you take a moment to truly look at your thoughts and determine if they are true, you can change overnight. Byron Katie is a wonderful author and has many books out. Check out “Loving What Is.” This book can change your life and help you to find tremendous peace within yourself.

Life is a gift. The purpose is joy. Find yours.

ou are not seeing double.

Brogan Ros, who you see here, is the identical twin of last week’s Student Spotlight feature, Davis Ros. And twinhood is something both young men believe—ironically—helped make them unique. For Brogan Ros, having a twin, he says, has made it easier to develop new friendships.

“It has forced me to learn how to share things from an extremely young age, and it has forced me to learn how to have an open mind about different perspectives,” Ros observed. “It has also made me unique in the fact that I have an ability to get over differences very quickly, which has helped me to make many friends and to learn to not hold grudges.”

A lifelong resident of the Wood River Valley, Ros says his favorite thing about living in the Valley is that there are so many activities to do, like alpine skiing, mountain biking, swimming in the rivers, camping nearby, and hiking. They are welcomed breaks from his heavy course load that includes A.P. Government, A.P. Human Geography, College English, and A.P. Statistics.

Ros also takes a ceramics class and competes in both basketball and track.

“I enjoy the fast-paced play and team aspect most about basketball, and I enjoy seeing my improvement each meet for track. I am also extremely competitive, so that’s why I enjoy both of these sports, as well,” Ros, who also coaches at youth basketball camps, explained.

Ros describes his plans after high school as “pretty vague” and his long-term life goals as “very vague.” But they don’t lack focus on some basic key elements.

“All I know is that I’m going to college, most likely on the East Coast somewhere,” Ros said. And to “just have a job I enjoy, that hopefully pays well, and probably having kids and a family.”

When Ros considers what impact he hopes to have on the world, that also involves a basic and key element.

“I would make sure everyone in the world has clean water because it is such a necessity for life to have drinkable water, and it should be a basic good that everyone has,” Ross said.

never imagined myself playing for events or singing in front of people, even after I wrote my song “Dreamer,” but Herbert Romero encouraged me enough to do so.

Romero and I met at the first annual Hailey Hispanic Heritage event that he was hosting back in 2018 and, to be completely honest, I thought it was going to be a one-time thing. But it wasn’t. He kept inviting me back to sing for events around the community, like for the Hailey Rotary Club, and the Latinx Festival in Twin Falls. And each time I always felt so honored to take part of something.

Romero has truly brought not only a light to my music, but to who we are as a Hispanic family. He continuously teaches us the importance of our culture and helps students, adults, and everyone in between in such an impactful way without tearing anyone down.

It has been a pleasure to be able to work alongside him and, most importantly, watch him build students up, as he seems to know our potential before we do.

Herbert Romero has completely changed my life with his positivity and kind words, and I know he will continue to do so for others in our community.

Food Visionary Robyn O’Brien Comes To Ketchum

obyn O’Brien is recognized globally as one of the world’s leading food industry strategists. She was a keynote speaker at the 2019 Sun Valley Forum and returns to the Wood River Valley on Monday, March 9, for a free community talk at 6 p.m. at the Limelight Hotel in Ketchum.

O’Brien’s work centers on the relationship between our food system and both human and environmental health. According to O’Brien’s keynote at the Sun Valley Forum, “One in three American kids has one of the four A’s: allergies, autism, ADHD and asthma.”

The connection between the toxins hidden within our current food system and the dramatic increase in disease and emergency room visits is alarming. O’Brien asks, “Are we allergic to food or what’s been done to it?”

If you are interested in learning more about our

food system and the impact it is having on your health, your children’s health, and our planet’s health, this is a talk not to be missed.

Locally, efforts are underway to secure a solution for the problems with the current food system.This effort is being led by the Local Food Alliance (LFA), a program of the Sun Valley Institute. LFA is building a model local food system that provides improved nutrition, supports local farmers, rural economies, and contributes to a thriving environment.

Through diverse initiatives, LFA works to identify, develop, and facilitate effective solutions for the Wood River Valley community. Changing our food system is not a simple task.

But it is critical to combat local and global challenges, including human health complications, food insecurity, environmental degradation, and climate change.

Not The Same ‘Ole, Same ‘Ole

his next week I will be officially filing as a candidate for Blaine County Commissioner, running as an Independent, non-affiliated candidate. As an Independent, I am not allowed on the ballot for the May primary, but will be on the ballot in the general election, November 3, 2020.

As Commissioner, I am going to do things differently than the same ‘ole, same ‘ole; I pledge radical transparency and a commitment to treat citizens respectfully as valued participants in our democracy. Right now, if a citizen wanted to comment on a particular Commissioner’s agenda item, they would first have to know about it (not easy! agendas are posted only five days in advance online, lots of topics are not clearly noted but discussed in general reporting areas of the agenda), show up at

the upstairs courthouse at the scheduled time, wait for an hour or so of presentation by staff, and finally get a chance to comment for maybe 3-4 minutes, maximum.

People work! People have kids and others to take care of at home. Some folks may find it tough to get to a meeting through physical challenges or lack of transportation. The first thing I pledge to do is to institute live video filming of Commissioners’ meetings and allow remote participation by interested citizens. I would change the hearing of an agenda item to prioritize the comment period first so people who do make the effort participate as citizens to comment are heard first.

I would let people speak until they feel that they have been heard and all of their concerns have been brought up.

Most importantly, I would lead the Commissioners in adopting the attitude that the Commissioners work for the citizens of Blaine County; we are only just representatives to get things done on behalf of all Blaine County citizens. We should be grateful for folks to show up and comment, even when they provide a different viewpoint. Better decisions are made when diverse viewpoints are aired.

Neighbors should be sought out in advance and consulted proactively when something is proposed that will affect their neighborhood, rather than shunned and avoided as “only NIMBYs” (I can show you in the meeting minutes where this has actually been said!). Blaine County attorney Tim Graves has publicly stated that I have written too many comments to the Commissioners in the past. This attitude has no place in Blaine County government in the future.

As well, I have signed the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge: “I pledge not to take contributions from oil, gas, and coal industry executives, lobbyists, and PACs and instead prioritize the health of our families, climate and democracy over fossil-fuel industry profits.” From their site www.nofossilfuelmoney.org, this organization states that over 2,000 politicians have signed this pledge since it was started in 2017.

And why is this important? In a state where 50 percent of our power came from coal-fired power plants until most recently, and where our almost-monopoly

power company writes campaign donation checks to almost every state legislator through PACs, I wanted to announce a change from doing business in the same ‘ole, same ‘ole way by committing to this pledge publicly, joining other Idaho candidates like Lauren McLean, the new Boise mayor.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Lauren as she was one of only three people who walked into that Idaho Power shareholder meeting with me back in May 2009 when my shareholder initiative to reduce coal power production was on the ballot. To get into the meeting, we had to navigate through Idaho Power bodyguards and DO-NOT-CROSS yellow police riot tape. I think that they thought I was a radical who was going to cause a scene and throw fake blood on coal or something. But I was just a mom. A mom who thought that it wasn’t right that other people’s kids living next to these coal-fired power plants were getting sick from the emissions and the tailings ponds; we had to work for clean air for everyone. Now we know for sure that it is not just our clean air that depends on lower fossil fuel emissions, but actually our way of life, including our snowpack and our prevention of summer wildfires.

Underestimate a mom who won’t accept the same old, same old!

Ketchum Fire Department Performs Backcountry Rescue

On Tuesday, Feb. 25, Ketchum and Sun Valley Fire Departments responded to a call for the rescue of an injured skier. The injury took place on the slopes of Hyndman Peak, near the Pioneer yurt in the Pioneer Mountains east of Ketchum/Sun Valley. A paramedic from Ketchum Fire Department was flown in by helicopter and landed near the skier and extracted her without incident.

A higher number than average ski injuries have occurred this season due to infrequent snowfall and firm conditions. The Blaine County Ambulance District has a “call-when-needed” contract with Sun Valley Heli-Ski, which has assisted on three backcountry rescues this season.

“The availability of the helicopter really helps keep our rescuers safe,” said City of Ketchum Fire Chief Bill McLaughlin. “We can get in and get the victim out much more quickly than we can on foot.”

The helicopter extraction was backed up by a snowmobile and ski team staged at the trailhead, ready in case the helicopter was not able to land.

“It takes a big team. We’ll have 10 to 20 firefighters and paramedics involved, sheriff’s deputies, search and rescue, avalanche forecasters and even the medical director out in the field,” said McLaughlin. “It’s great to see the cooperation and focus on getting the patient out quickly and safely.”

Ketchum Issues ‘Art On Fourth’ Sculpture Call For Artists

The City of Ketchum is inviting experienced artists to apply for Ketchum’s outdoor summer sculpture exhibition, “Art on Fourth.” The selected three-dimensional artwork will be featured in the heart of downtown Ketchum along the Fourth Street Heritage Corridor from June through October 2020.

Selected artists will receive a $2,500 stipend for the exhibition of their work. The deadline for submission is April 6, 2020.

In its 13th year, Art on Fourth has become an exciting part of the city’s summer attractions, presenting artwork by diverse artists ranging from locals to those of national standing. Past exhibitors include Rod Kagan, Boaz Vaadia, Gwynn Murrill, Steve Jensen, Will Robinson and Robert Kantor, among others. The exhibition is organized and curated by the Ketchum Arts Commission, whose mission is to integrate arts and culture into the community’s life.

Artists may enter up to 10 sculptures for consideration. The call for artists, which provides detailed information on the submission process, can be found at ketchumidaho.org/arts. The call is open to all artists, regardless of their state of residence.

Local artists are encouraged to apply.

Resort Passes On Sale Soon

The 2020-21 winter season passes for Sun Valley Resort go on sale March 2 with special early pricing and enhanced benefits through May 31, 2020, resort management said. The Challenger, Freedom Found, and 15 Day passes also have the added benefit of free spring skiing if paid in full during the initial pricing period.

In addition to the enhanced benefits, Sun Valley will also have another 380 acres of skiable terrain as a part of the Bald Mountain Expansion. The expansion will also include the replacement of the resort’s oldest chairlift, Cold Springs #4, with a new high-speed detachable chair, the extension of the Lower Broadway run with 25 snowmaking guns, and more beginner, expert, and gladed skiing and riding.

Passholders of the Sun Valley Challenger or College Pass will also receive a 50 percent discount on the daily lift ticket window rate at Vail Resorts-owned and operated destinations that are a part of the Epic Pass next season.

The popular Sun and Snow Pass is back for the Winter 2020-21 season. Passholders will have three days of skiing or riding at both Sun Valley and Snowbasin, no blackout dates, and 50 percent off the lift ticket window rate for additional days at each resort.

Open Call To Valley Artists For 8th Annual Studio Tour

Professional visual artists who work and live in the Wood River Valley are invited to apply online at wrvstudiotour.org beginning March 1. The call continues through April 30.

Early-bird registration is $150 when artists successfully complete their online registration by April 20. A procrastinators’ special registration fee is $250 from April 21 to 30. The open studio tour takes place Aug. 22–23 and a free reception open to the community will be hosted by WRVST on Friday, Aug. 21. The Wood River Valley Studio Tour (WRVST) is one of the largest open studio events in the state and draws thousands of visitors each year.

Bringing together artists from around the Valley who open their studios to the public for a weekend every summer, the WRVST creates a welcoming experience for the public to explore fine art and craftsmanship through the eyes of the artists.

The tour includes a three-day weekend of art-related events and an artist reception among the much-anticipated Group Exhibition and Mosaic Project, both of which may be viewed in person Aug. 21–23.

Park Manslaughter Trial Moved To April

The trial for the Fairfield man charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter and two counts of aggravated Driving Under the Influence has been reset for April 28 with a pre-trial conference set for April 13, Blaine County Courthouse documents reveal.

According to the courthouse, Matthew Park’s lawyers asked for more time to prepare for the jury trial and Judge Ned C. Williamson granted that request. The trial had been originally slated for Feb. 19.

Park is accused of killing three young girls from Mountain Home when he rear-ended their family car along Highway 20 on Aug. 10 at the site of a temporary traffic signal for an Idaho Transportation Department bridge construction project just east of Hot Springs Landing. The driver of the vehicle (the girls’ father, Somchai Ray Lee Lurak) and passenger (Emma Weigand) were also injured but survived.

Schools Cannot Do It Alone Kiwanis quietly helps community

“Everyone benefits when communities support their local schools,” Jamie Vollmer said.

A noted author and popular public speaker, Vollmer is in the Wood River Valley this week to share his theory about education. On Thursday morning, March 5, Vollmer will speak at a special Breakfast with The Chamber at the Community Campus in Hailey. Like all Chamber events, it is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

“Something needs to change,” Vollmer said during a phone interview last week. “But anyone who thinks people are the problem should spend a day in a school. The problem is not the people.”

Vollmer began his life as an attorney and successful businessman. But his life changed direction when he was asked to be part of a roundtable for schools in Iowa several decades ago.

“I was a vocal critic of public education. I was convinced the system was broken and that if we ran it like a business, we could fix it,” he said.

“The deeper I got involved, the more I realized my theories were wrong.”

As Vollmer dove deeper into education, he began to realize that the people—at least most of them in the system—weren’t the problem. He also realized that trying to run it like a business wouldn’t work, either.

Unlike a typical business, schools have no control over the raw materials they have to work with.

For example, the average kindergarten class in America is open to everyone from kids who’ve been read to since they were in the womb to kids who have never been read to. Schools also can’t control their budget sources, as the whims of politicians and voters make those decisions. Lastly is that fact that no one can agree on what the final product of an education system should be.

Thankfully, Vollmer believes there are reasons to be hopeful.

“First thing we need to do is build a conversation. The number one rule for school transformation is that you cannot touch a school until you touch the culture of the community,” Vollmer said.

Besides re-thinking what we teach, Vollmer said we need to “re-think how we group students.”

The one-style-fits-all model of public education simply does not work for many students, from low to high achievers and numerous kids in between.

“Now that the economy and world has changed, schools need to change, too. We need to create curriculums that make sense for the 21st century,” he said.

Vollmer’s final point is to remind every member of the community how important it is to have a quality local education system. He rolled off stats that equate better schools to improving everything from real estate values to lower law enforcement issues to stronger healthcare systems to better service sectors across the board.

“When schools do a better job,” Vollmer said, “the positive externalities increase across the community.”
