The Idaho State Legislature, which has tried to keep and has kept certain COVID safety restrictions at bay for themselves and others this legislative session, wasn’t able to fend off the actual virus in recent days. Upon the approval of both branches of the legislature, the state Capitol was shut down last week due to a quick uptick in COVID-19 cases that hit lawmakers and staffers in recent days. The recess for both the House and Senate will end April 6 at noon, when Gem State reps will have about a week’s worth of legislating to wrap up.

Michelle Stennett, in response to an email by “Wood River Weekly” asking if she was disappointed with how restriction-lenient some fellow lawmakers had been during the legislative session, had this to say: “Given the sudden escalation of COVID infection in the Idaho House, they determined it was best to recess to bring it under control. Democratic state Sen. David Nelson not known at this time. However, it is true the House has had more confirmed cases than the Senate and Republican lawmakers had more confirmed cases than Democrats. To be clear, both the Senate and House have more Republicans than Democrats, so in a relatively small sample size (10 cases), more Republicans will be COVID positive. In the Senate, it’s 28 red to 7 blue; in the House, it’s 58 red to 12 blue, if you’re keeping score.

And then there’s majority leader Rep. Scott Bedke from District 27, who said this when announcing the House’s recess and whether it would negatively impact lawmaking progress: • “It would’ve been nice if we could’ve finished completely, but we didn’t, and we’ll come back and finish the job.”

• “All we did was press pause. Nothing gets erased. We take it back up on the 6th.”

• “There are many outstanding issues, including property taxes, the transportation bill, the income tax bill, the separation of powers bill, just to name a few.”

Bedke, who just days before the shutdown was asking Republican lawmakers to take precautions, said he will not require masks to be worn when their work resumes in April.

Historic Loss

uilt just in 1982, the now razed-by-fire Croy Street Exchange building wasn’t on any national or local registry, but it served as a landmark fitting into the historic character of old town Hailey for four decades. Nothing could be saved by firefighters who fought the blaze valiantly, but they did manage to protect the rest of the block from burning to the ground.

Built in the mid-1930s, the old U.S. Forest Service warehouse just down the street from the Exchange was protected by the city, to a degree. But parking needs next door, lead paint in the structure, and failed efforts to move it to a new site led to its demise. Last Monday, crews demolished it, but not before the Public Works Department was able to preserve the building’s unique doors, well known for their green asterisk-shaped moldings on plain white wood backdrop.

In just one week, across just one block, Valley residents got a taste for just how fragile an area’s history can be.

“My heart is broken because the intent was really promising,” Hailey Mayor Martha Burke said regarding the Croy Street Exchange Building and ownership’s plans to convert it into workforce housing.

Last year, several tenants had been occupying the building co-owned by District 26 Senator Michelle Stennett, but in a letter dated Dec. 31, tenants were instructed to vacate by Jan. 30. It wasn’t warmly received by some tenants, but the City of Hailey seemed likely to be on board given the dearth of housing that’s affordable for the working class. Planning & Zoning was slated to review the latest designs next month.

“Hopefully, there’s another new opportunity there for housing,” Burke said.

Stennett was asked about any future plans for the property, but did not return phone calls or emails before press deadline Tuesday.

As for the Forest Service buildings, Burke had similar sentiment.

“When we first moved here in ’73, ’74, that was the center of town. I used to tell my kids Smokey the Bear lives there,” Burke said. “I loved that complex, the huge evergreens. It’s a tragedy any time we can’t reuse or repurpose today. It’s the right thing for history, it’s the right thing for the environment.”

Burke said she was hopeful that the other Forest Service buildings on the complex would never meet the same fate of the larger warehouse structure that fell last week.

“They’re not the prettiest buildings right now, but they have a history worth keeping,” Burke said.

Sandahl did not say whether there was any suspicion of an explosive device and that details were still actively being investigated.

“We’re following up with a couple of leads now,” Sandahl said in regards to the investigation overall.

He added that it’s not uncommon to call in the ATF since they have certified fire investigators.

“When we saw the size and the scope of the fire we knew we’d need support,” Sandahl said. “An investigation like that can be quite taxing to local fire departments and law enforcement. Additional resources are part of what the ATF provides.”

Sandahl could not provide a timeline for when the investigation may be wrapped up.

Valley leaders, residents grapple with growing tensions between longtimers, new arrivals

alk to Mike McKenna—the executive director of the local chamber of commerce—about the pros of what could be an economy taking off, and he’ll also want to talk to you about concerns he has about the newer residents moving in.

“I just think people moving here have to be ready to assimilate more to small-town life than a small town has to assimilate to them,” McKenna said, still reeling a bit from what he called “an attack” by some newer-to-the-Valley folks about his opinions on the proposal for a Croy Canyon campground.

Talk to Hailey Mayor Martha Burke about the diversity of license plates (from other states) she’s seeing these days and she’ll quip, “I wish we could interview people moving here and have them check off a few boxes, ‘Do you clean up your dog’s poop?’ or ‘Will you volunteer at our schools?’”

“We’re at a crossroads,” said Burke, who moved to Idaho from California in the 1970s.

“When I moved here, my family had the motto: Don’t Californicate, appreciate.”

All the data isn’t in yet, but the eye test has been going on since COVID restrictions were in place and even before. It’s clear the Valley looks a little more congested on roads, in parking lots, at stores, and on trails. It’s part second-home owners staying longer, part travelers opting for Idaho since they can’t cross international borders, and part influx of new, permanent residents from, especially, California to Washington, purchasing real estate and looking to grow roots.

What’s a small town to do?

“It’s hard to create policy with anecdotes, you need data,” says Ketchum Mayor Neil Bradshaw. “I don’t think anyone’s ever been perfect about picking up their dog poop.

Look at newspapers from 100 years ago and you can probably find complaints there.”

But Bradshaw agrees with Burke that whatever the actual numbers are when it comes to new arrivals, there will be a distinct need for them to be active members of the community. It’s not so much about fitting in, it’s about making a difference—a positive one, of course.

“We don’t need to fear a change, we need to find a change we want and to embrace it,” Bradshaw said.

Bradshaw has street cred on that point. He moved to the Valley in 2005, from London.

Immediately, he got involved, on a volunteer basis, and helped launch the Ketchum Community Development Corporation—a nonprofit organization formed in July 2006 as part of an overall revitalization plan that also included a Downtown Master Planning exercise and the formation of the Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency. Policy Change?

Burke was only joking about the interview process for entry into Hailey and Bradshaw noted what Ketchum has already done with its #KetchumKind campaign and other efforts city leaders have made to do outreach and increase community engagement.

“If nothing else, I hope people who move here learn the history of here,” Bradshaw observed.

And for the folks who already live here, who feel they’re living the right way, Bradshaw says, “Kill it with kindness. And lead by example.”

Local 600-Person COVID Study Under Way

IN BRIEF

St. Luke’s Health System and the Blaine County Innovation and Testing Task Force on Monday launched what will be a six-month research study of about 600 people in Blaine County who are at increased risk of contracting COVID-19 and of infecting others.

People with frequent, regular contact with the public are best suited for this study, which will be known as the “Blaine COVID STATS” study (Study To Test And Track SARS-CoV-2). Participants will complete a weekly questionnaire and do weekly at-home nasal swab self-testing for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

St. Luke’s said by taking part in the study, participants can help Blaine County more quickly recognize a new wave of COVID-19 infections, help to reduce community spread, and contribute to research about the immune response to coronavirus infection. There is no cost to participate; in fact, study participants are paid for their efforts.

Principal investigators are Dr. Terry O’Connor and Dr. Tom Archie, and the study team includes laboratory scientists at St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center and epidemiologists at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Albany, N.Y. Blaine COVID STATS is sponsored by the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Partnerships include collaboration with researchers at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in La Jolla, Calif.

Friedman Memorial Airport staff and aviation folks in general are mourning the passing of a beloved local pilot and conservationist. Robert Gray Stevens, born April 9, 1935, passed away on Feb. 15 in Ketchum after a brief illness. He was 85.

Stevens had a lifelong love affair with the sky. Anytime fair weather prevailed, he could be found aloft in the Idaho backcountry, at the yoke of his beloved Piper Cub. A Valley local since 1977, Stevens had purchased close to 20 acres north of Ketchum where he and his wife Carol made their family home.

Opportunities for commercial office development abounded, and Stevens didn’t hesitate to take advantage.

He kept his plane at Friedman Memorial Airport where he noticed there weren’t any hangars to protect aircraft from the elements. So what does a developer with an airplane at an airport with no hangars do? Build some, of course.

It was supposed to just be six hangars, but demand eventually led to 35 hangars.

Stevens was a beloved fixture at Friedman Memorial Airport, flying two to three times a week, when the weather permitted. Clad in his usual khaki slacks, a red checkered button-down shirt and his trademark lightweight fiberfill jacket, he was easily recognizable around the field. As time claimed his once bushy head of hair, he added a ball cap to his “uniform of the day.”

Friedman Memorial Airport Manager Chris Pomeroy recalled his first encounter with Stevens, just shortly after he was hired.

“I can’t remember why Bob had ostensibly dropped by the office, but I quickly gathered he was there to ‘size-up the new guy’ that had just landed in the top position at his beloved airport,” said Pomeroy. “I could tell immediately he was definitely someone to be reckoned with—in a good way.”

“We aim to make the registration process as easy as possible for our families. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and assist with the process as needed,” said Fritz Peters, superintendent of the BCSD. When attending a registration event, families are asked to bring an original, state-certified birth certificate, up-to-date immunization records, proof of residency in Blaine County and income verification (for preschool registration only).

Murder-Suicide? Still Under Review

The case involving the possible murder-suicide of Ashley Midby and Jared Murphy reached the county prosecutor’s office March 12, but the public shouldn’t expect any news on the matter any time soon.

As of press deadline Tuesday, Prosecuting Attorney Matt Fredback still had the case under review and had not made any final decision on the case, his office confirmed. Fredback has provided no timeline for findings, which is typical, the office said, since cases like this require coordination between multiple departments and agencies.

The delay is raising eyebrows and speculation for some Valley residents still reeling from the shock of the news that the bodies of Midby, 34, and Murphy, 28, were discovered shortly after 8 p.m. on Oct. 22 with gunshot wounds, in the office area next to Midby’s family coffee shop in Bellevue.

The long period between the deaths and the yet-to-be-released details suggest to some that the Idaho State Police investigation may have involved Blaine County Prosecuting inquiries as to whether the possible murder-suicide was actually a double Attorney Matt Fredback. homicide. Soon after the incident in October, a Facebook page titled “Prayers for Ashley and Justice for All Women Victims of Domestic Abuse” was published and images of happier days, information on vigils, and nearly 1,000 FB page followers poured in.

A Nation That’s Always At War Has No Moral Authority Notes From The Edge Of The Narrative Matrix

• A nation that has constantly been at war throughout its entire history has no moral authority to tell other nations how to be. This should be extremely obvious to literally everyone.

• Liberals are much, much more comfortable thinking about the spike in anti-Asian hate crimes as a rise in white supremacism caused by Donald Trump than as the inevitable consequence of an aggressive imperialist propaganda campaign against China.

• Talking about the spike in anti-Asian hate crimes as just the result of white supremacism and not imperialist propaganda against China facilitated by white supremacism is a service to white supremacism. The problem is that when plutocrats control the government and media, the only incremental changes which actually occur are those which benefit the plutocracy. • Don't say incrementalism doesn't work. It does work. It works all the time. It just never works for you.

• I don't know who needs to hear this, but you will never, ever, ever succeed in converting me to capitalism or right-wing ideology. Trying to do this will only lead to frustration. You are free to frustrate yourself in this way as much as you like, it just looks uncomfortable.

• If humanity miraculously survives the existential hurdles it has placed before itself as a species, future generations will scarce believe we used to actively stockpile armageddon weapons on purpose.

• You can tell how sincere someone's politics are based on how much time they spend up-punching versus how much time they spend down-punching or left-punching. If they're in it for healthy reasons they'll focus on the former. If they're in it for ego and/or profit their emphasis will be on the latter.

• Every insane thing humans have done has been the result of some dumb narrative that they believed in their minds. Some recognize this and help free humanity from its enslavement to mental narrative. Others recognize this and use this weakness to enslave humans to themselves.

ellness, as a lifestyle, has reached new importance due to the challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic this past year. And large in-person events have hit new challenges during that timeframe. That’s why the longest-running wellness festival in the world is taking a deep breath—perhaps even a sigh of relief—that the 2021 Sun Valley Wellness Festival & Conference (SVWFC) is not only a go, it’s a place one can go to, too.

Tickets, aka SVWellness Passes, for both in-person attendance and the Virtual SVWFC Experience option, are available at www.sunvalleywellness.org. Virtual passes go on sale March 25 and in-person passes go on sale in May, with a specific date to be determined. Passholders will have full access to all online session content through July 31, 2021, Andria Friesen, SVWellness board president, said.

Last year’s event, festival spokesperson Carol Waller said, was at first a no-go, then planned as a virtual event only with some trepidation the festival would fall flat.

“We weren’t sure we could pull it off, and it ended up getting really well received,” Waller said. “We knew it was going to become a regular part of the festival going forward.”

Specifically, when the conference pivoted to a fully virtual experience due to the pandemic, it attracted participants from 35 states and 15 countries, including Australia, Spain, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal, and Monaco.

The festival has been on the forefront of the wellness movement for decades and will continue to offer a wide range of innovative wellness programs through its four pillars of focus—Mind, Body, Spirit and Environment—during its 24th annual event, June 25 to 28, in Ketchum. Meatless Burgers Mania: Worth The Hype?

he vegetarian and vegan communities have exploded exponentially in the last few years. In fact, according to an article published by The Economist, “Fully a quarter of 25- to 34-year-old Americans say they are vegans or vegetarians.” What was once considered a stark minority of the population has now created a huge demand for meatless food options in restaurants and grocery stores worldwide. Where there once were only slim pickings now lays an array of options, as most major grocery stores, and nearly every fast food restaurant, have jumped on the meatless burger bandwagon by implementing meat-free alternatives for their growing group of vegetarian consumers.

With options so limitless and readily available, you may be asking yourself if you should switch out your beloved beef patty for a meatless alternative. As shown by the growing numbers of vegetarians, many would say yes. Read ahead to learn about the differences between beef burgers and their meatless alternatives.

Many have expressed concern for the nutritional differences between meat and meatless products. Perhaps the biggest concern lies in the belief that meatless alternatives cannot possibly contain a sufficient amount of protein.

Aside from the fact that many doctors now believe most Americans consume too much protein, nowadays many vegetarian burgers pack a protein punch similar to, or even exceeding, that of real meat products.

Though meatless burgers may stand up to the protein test, it’s important to note that many of the prepackaged versions contain a number of processed ingredients. Anyone can make a beef burger at home with one simple ingredient: beef. Packaged vegetarian burgers are made up of a number of different ingredients such as pea protein isolate or soy. To avoid these processed ingredients, make vegetarian burgers at home with whole foods such as legumes and vegetables.

Just as there is a range of quality in meatless burgers, good quality, organic, grass-fed beef is much more nutritious than a burger you grab at McDonald’s and can even stand up nutritionally -- depending on your dietary needs -- to a homemade vegetarian burger made of whole ingredients.

Which will cost you more: a beef burger or a meatless burger? The answer depends. If you get your meatless burg-

er fix at a Burger King or Carl’s Jr., you’ll be disappointed to find that meatless burgers carry a high sticker price. Most restaurants carry the Beyond Burger or Impossible Burger brand of meatless burgers, which are priced much higher than many other prepackaged meatless burgers. They are known for being as meatlike as possible. Other prepackaged burgers aren’t nearly as expensive as the Beyond Meat or Impossible brands and can be found priced similarly to or less than beef patties. However, if you choose to make a meatless burger at home, you may be pleasantly surprised to find that a burger made of legumes and fresh vegetables can be significantly cheaper than good quality beef.

But does our choice between beef or vegetarian burgers really have an effect on the planet? There are a number of environmental implications of animal agriculture that have been studied by scientists and environmentalists.

The primary causes for concern with animal-farming are greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, overuse of finite resources, diminishing biodiversity and toxic waste runoff -- just to name a few.

In the case of energy consumption, a spokesperson for Beyond Meat -- arguably one of the most innovative companies committed to creating meatless alternatives -- is able to showcase the effects of animal agriculture as he states: “On average, Americans eat three burgers a week. If they switched just one of these beef burgers to a Beyond Burger for a year, it would be like taking 12 million cars off the road and saving enough energy to power 2.3 million homes.”

For those hoping for large-scale changes in environmental damages, a diet -- or even just a burger -- focused more on vegetables than meat could be the answer to a more sustainable way of living.

ountain Rides Transportation Authority is eager to engage the Hispanic/Latino community, and give them all the details they need to know about when and where to get on the new, fare-free bus to Twin Falls. Starting Monday, April 5, Mountain Rides will offer a new, farefree bus service between the Wood River Valley and Twin Falls. The new route is designed to improve access to medical appointments in Twin Falls; however, anyone can ride the bus to Twin Falls—whether they are going to a medical appointment or not. Like the rest of Mountain Rides’ bus services, the Twin Falls bus will be available to the general public, operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and be fare-free.

You can find the schedule on Mountain Rides’ website, on Facebook, and on buses. Printed schedules are also at Atkinsons’ markets and other locations around the Valley. The bus will run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and give people a 10:15 a.m. – 4 p.m. window in Twin Falls. People traveling north from Twin Falls and Lincoln counties will have a 1.5-hour window in the Wood River Valley, from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Mountain Rides at (208) 788-7433 with any question—in English or in Spanish.

To offer some background, Mountain Rides is able to launch this new service with a grant from the National Aging and Disability Center. As the new service rolls out, Mountain Rides will analyze how well it: 1) increases access to medical appointments; and 2) improves the quality of transportation options to/from Twin Falls. Mountain Rides is actively seeking additional funding from grants, cities and counties to extend the duration of the new service beyond May 2021.

ne of the silver linings to filing your income tax return is finding out that you are going to receive a refund that could literally open the door to owning a home. If you happen to be one of these fortunate taxpayers, your next decision is what to do with it.

With the average tax refund near $3,000, it could be the ticket to buying a home sooner rather than later. Regardless of the size of your refund, it can be used toward the down payment or closing costs of the home.

Most people think it takes 10% or more down payment to purchase a home, but actually, it is much less because of several low-down-payment mortgages. There are VA and USDA mortgages that allow for no down payment for qualified buyers. FHA has a 3.5% down payment program and FNMA and Freddie Mac have 3% down payment mortgages for qualified creditors as well as 5% down programs.

Closing costs for originating new mortgages can easily range from 2 to 3 percent of the purchase price, but most lenders will allow the seller to pay part or all of them based on the agreement in the sales contract. If you are using a VA or USDA loan, your refund could go toward paying the closing costs.

On a practical matter, if you are due a refund, have it deposited directly into your account. It is necessary to trace the source of the funds. Cashing

Should You Have An Annual Wellness Exam Or Screenings During COVID?

egular screenings save lives, but you may be wondering if you should skip it in the age of COVID. With the pandemic lasting over a year, many have foregone these important annual checkups that can catch issues early. Early detection can make potentially serious health problems treatable, leading to better outcomes. Virtual visits, via telehealth, have become more widely available in order to provide care outside of the walls of the hospital and clinic setting.

At St. Luke’s, virtual care is integrated into our organization in many ways, within a variety of service lines, including wellness checks and behavioral health. Dr. Frank Batcha, SLWR Family Medicine, explains telehealth and how it works.

“A virtual visit is a real-time, audio-visual interaction between patients/families and providers using telehealth technology. It occurs via myChart and can take place on a tablet or smartphone. Some evisits can also occur over the telephone without video.”

Patients can contact their primary care provider or specialist to inquire about utilizing myChart and telehealth. Patients can also message their provider, request prescription refills, view test results, schedule appointments and e-check-in for an upcoming visit via myChart.

The annual wellness examination is an opportunity to focus on disease prevention and health promotion. Examinations provide a stepping stone for the development of a relationship between the provider and patient. Medical providers use the wellness exam to evaluate how the body is performing. This is your opportunity to create an individualized health plan, unique to your age, gender, and health issues. Your doctor can help you identify areas of your health that you can focus on to help prevent the development of chronic diseases. An average wellness exam may include but is not limited to the following components: • Comprehensive exam specific to age, gender and

risk factors.

• Vital sign monitoring that typically includes blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, as well as temperature, height and weight.

• Medication management (risk vs. benefit).

• Review guidelines for current preventative health and screening tests.

• Laboratory tests which may include a chemistry panel, a lipid panel (cholesterol test), prostate-specific antigen (men only), and a diabetes screening test. Most of these tests are not necessary every year.

• Skin evaluation for dermatological health.

• Updated health history.

• Developmental, behaviorial and/or psychological health evaluation.

• Update needed immunizations.

Preventive care to offset chronic disease should be woven into all aspects of life, including where we live, work, learn, play and grow. Apart from disease screenings, the annual wellness exam is beneficial to answer patient questions about health and lifestyle choices while presenting an opportunity to steer patients in a healthy direction. NO BONES ABOUT IT THE “WEEKLY” FISHING REPORT FOR MARCH 24 - APRIL 6 FROM PICABO ANGLER

W

e have a week left to fish our local waters before the season closes for spawning fish. It’s always a bummer when the season closes for a few short months. The good news is the fishing right now is incredible and we have some more distant year-round fisheries.

The fishing on the Big Wood right now is a whole lot of usewhatever-technique-you-like.

With the rainbow population in pre-spawn mode, the fish are looking to fatten up after a long winter and pack down the calories for the spring spawning event. This means you can nymph, streamer fish or fish dry flies! If you fish nymphs, try flies that imitate the Little Black Stonefly that is present these days. Prince Nymphs and Black Backed Hare’s Ears and Pheasant Tails are a good choice.

Try these in a size 12 or 14. You can also attach smaller nymphs like Zebra Nymphs or Lightning Bugs under the bigger ones.

Brassies are also a great choice, still. If you fish a streamer, just make sure it has some olive color to it. Dry-fly action is going to be Midge fishing. Tie-Down Midges and Griffith’s Gnats are the go-to setup.

Silver Creek is on fire is you like streamer fishing! With a little tint to the water and some warmer days, all the fish are out and hunting bait. We may still see some big Midge hatches before the week is up, but if we don’t get them, who cares when the streamer fishing is this good! The Nature Conservancy remains closed until May 29, but anglers will find the best fishing downstream anyhow. The Highway 20 Bridge all the way to Picabo Bridge is great water and great fishing.

The South Fork of the Boise and the lower Lost River are fishing well and may be your best bet for finding some spring dry-fly action. Some later-in-theday Baetis is always a possibility on either river. Keep in mind the South Fork will close at the end of the month, but the lower Lost River stays open all year now.

It really is an incredible time to be fishing. Angler numbers are down and the daytime temperatures are coming up. Keep in mind the fish are in pre-spawn mode, so please handle them gently and try not to take them out of the water.

The Popularity Of Dog Anthropomorphism

ust what is anthropomorphism? It is humanizing dogs. The media and pet suppliers, the dog-training community and dog-care specialists have begun to refer to dogs as “fur babies” or “fur children.” Not a day goes by that we don’t see dogs in clothes that make them look like little children.

I posted a photo on the Positive Puppy Facebook page that had a Weimaraner with painted toenails and a bracelet on her leg. A Weimeraner is a hunting dog with huge energy and the need to run and hunt. In order to paint this dog’s nails, her “guardians” had allowed the nails to grow especially long. As a result, this dog will end up with health issues with her feet that could result in pain the rest of her life and cause her to be unable to run. For what purpose? So her “guardian” can enjoy their dog looking like a human “princess.”

Anthropomorphism is incredibly dangerous, not only to a dog’s physical health but also to that dog’s mental health.

Many of the aggression and severe separation anxiety cases I work with are a result of dogs being treated like “fur babies,” or beings that have feelings, like people, without any rules or structure. I love my dogs as much if not more than anyone on the planet, but I love them enough to respect that they are dogs and of a different species.

I LOVE that they are dogs, NOT humans!

I am not here to argue that dogs don’t have feelings. They do, but they do not have feelings the way that we humans do and they do not respond the way we humans do to certain situations.

So, how do we honor our dogs? First, we do some research to find out what our dog was bred to do. Even mixed-breed dogs have an innate purpose. Humans originally selected wolves that were the most social and trainable in order to help primitive man with living. Over time, humans domesticated those wolves into dogs. Dogs were originally intended to help herd livestock, hunt to help humans find food, pull carts, protect families, kill vermin in the barn, and yes, even be our companions. But dogs did not lose their day jobs to sit at home and sleep on the back of the sofa. Our first job should be to understand the ancestry of our dogs, which will help us to understand what kind of dog they are today.

In many ways, dogs have taken the place of human companions.

instead of across town. Even in our high-rise apartments, many of us don’t even know our neighbors anymore. A huge part of the time, once we get to know our neighbor, they move away to take a job in Alaska or India. We look for those warm fuzzy dogs to comfort our loneliness, and put enormous pressure on our beloved dog to be only a companion instead of a dog intended to work to help people.

How many times have you heard that a dog loves to obey? What we humans perceive as work is usually FUN for our dog and helps her maintain a healthy body and mind. Dogs LOVE direction and are mentally and physically healthier when they are given direction.

Honor your dog for who she is and you will see amazing things in your relationship with her.

such a way that day and night (and, perhaps, depending on your perspective, the seasons) are in balance.

From that day forward, for us residents of the Wood River Valley, the days will be longer and the nights will be shorter on our way toward summer. For that reason, perhaps, most calendars mark the vernal equinox as the First Day of Spring.

All of this triggers a question that I’ve been asked lately: “How do animals know that spring is coming?” Which is one of those questions that really sort of messes with my head.

One of the things that I think we have to be most careful of in biology is acting like we can “know” what any other species “knows”— it’s just not a realistic proposition. Rife with opportunities for bias and for anthropocentrism, trying to draw parallels between our human trains of thought (that spring starts on the equinox, for instance) and non-human trains of thought has always seemed like a non-starter to me.

Besides, who are we to say what an animal knows or doesn’t know? They may be acting and reacting to environmental cues with processes entirely separate from what we call “knowing.” And, perhaps more to the point, their definition of “spring” may be entirely more nuanced and detailed than a date on the calendar.

here are milestones in the year that both ground the calendar and befuddle me. Fixed markers of time should be, on one hand, opportunities to recalibrate one’s sense of the pace of the year. On the other hand, I find them increasingly jarring in the sense that, despite what it says on the calendar, the natural rhythms of the year don’t always seem to align with fixed dates neatly.

It is easy to see “spring!” on the faces of those around me. Even those who love winter can’t resist smiling at the opportunity to bask in the sun in a T-shirt on their porches. Sunscreen is becoming more of a necessity. People are shedding the heavy clothing of winter.

The cold mornings are giving way to brilliantly bright and warm afternoons. The snow around my house is about gone (stranding, by the way, one of my old snowmobiles in the dirt in my front yard).

It’s getting harder and harder to hope for the next powder day.

This year, the vernal equinox fell on Saturday, March 20. An equinox (every year, there’s one in March and one in September) is when day and night are roughly equal in length, at every location on the planet. So, whether you are coming out of the hard-to-fathom-unless-you-have-lived-there darkness of winter above the Arctic Circle or you are finishing your southern hemisphere summer and looking toward autumn, or you live close to the equator, or you live in the Hannes Thum is a Wood River Valley native and has spent most of Wood River Valley of Idaho, the result is the same: for the first time his life exploring what our local ecosystems have to offer. f this “4th Estate” column does what it’s supposed to do—provide a sober examination of media’s role in society—then Oprah Winfrey’s latest re-entry into television prominence and water-cooler conversation deserves the royal treatment here.

No pun intended, really. I’m referring to her recent interview of the former British prince and princess, Harry What’s His Name and his wife Meghan Markle.

You’ve probably heard by now, the former

royals got a chance to explain why they left the family. And in doing so, their story asserts, alleges and implies that somewhere in a palace far, far away, there are white people who think they’re better than black people (or at least would rather not have to deal with them). Shocker.

To recap briefly, there were claims that someone of high ranking in the Royal Family had multiple conversations about Markle’s specific family lineage because they were worried about the relative darkness of her yet-to-be-born son Archie’s skin. The cou-

ple was also informed (prior to them leaving the Royal Family) that security would not be extended to their however-dark-or-light son and that he would not have the title of prince.

And, from day one, the British tabloids took a let’s-find-ways-to-trash-her approach toward Markle that her white counterparts didn’t endure—at least not to similar extent.

An IRA By Any Other Name

ndividual retirement accounts (IRAs) are savings and investment accounts with special tax breaks. Here are some distinctions between Traditional and Roth IRAs. •

Traditional IRA: Contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible depending on the taxpayer’s income, tax-filing status, and other factors. Account-holders may contribute up to $6,000 per year ($7,000 if you are 50 years or older). A taxpayer’s annual income does not limit contributions.

Roth IRA – Like Traditional IRAs, contribution limits apply to Roth IRAs. With a Roth IRA, your allowable contribution may be reduced or eliminated if your annual income exceeds certain limits. Contributions to a Roth IRA are never tax-deductible, but distributions will ultimately be income tax-free if certain conditions are met. Roth IRAs do not require withdrawals until after the death of the owner.

Simple IRA Plan: Ideal for employers with 100 or fewer employees. Employees may defer up to $13,500 of their salaries ($16,500 for those 50 and older.) Employers may match employee contributions or contribute 2% of staff compensation regardless of workers’ contributions.

SEP IRA: A Simplified Employee Pension Plan IRA can be a fit for self-employed individuals who want to minimize paperwork and plan costs while amplifying their retirement savings. The employer makes all contributions. Salary deferrals are not allowed.

RMDs or Required Minimum Distributions must be taken from a Traditional IRA, SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA, or retirement plan account in the year you reach 72 (70 1/2 if you reach 70 1/2 before January 1, 2020).

Withdrawal of pre-tax contributions or earnings will be subject to ordinary income tax and, if taken before age 59 1/2, may be subject to a 10% federal tax penalty. RMDs are generally subject to federal income tax and may be subject to state taxes. Consult your tax advisor to assess your situation.

To Kill Huck And The Mockingbird

Last week I received a forwarded email from a former classmate at the high school we both attended decades ago, John Burroughs, in Burbank, California, with the subject: Burbank School District in the news busy with change.

Among the changes detailed in the email, the school board has forbidden reference in its curriculum to the following books: To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

I was not allowed to assign Huckleberry Finn when I taught English at Beverly Hills High in the late seventies.

Now, I was set to teach an adult seminar this past spring on the “darker side” of Mark Twain, but it has been postponed until the library can offer these kinds of gatherings again.

The main reason some readers choose not to read or teach this renowned classic of American literature is the abundant use of the “n” word, certainly offensive to almost any reader in our world today. I can well imagine the chagrin and pain caused by that language, especially in the first few pages of the book, but it reflects Twain’s desire to portray the people of his time exactly as they talked, to use authentic dialect.

He also included the ungrammatical usage of the uneducated of any race, and the hypocritical pronouncements from the poor or rich, arrogant and holier-than-thou citizens along the Mississippi in 1800’s America. As far as encouraging students to read books that stimulate thinking about all issues, this one is a beloved classic.

Now this censorship is especially relevant in the great current debate about whether we should edit and change history (including books written in the past) or study all of the aspects of a true history, including arts and literature, facts, personal events and experiences of the time. I know that my generation’s education was one that stressed patriotism (not a bad thing) but also avoided the mention and study of the sad and divisive parts of our culture, both past and present.

This swirl around censorship has been obvious for years and it is a tough line to draw.

I really don’t know how I feel about issues other than literary censorship, and I realize that many of our cultural images reveal complex layers of attitude toward the subjects.

We have never lived in an easy time, but altering the past without examining thoroughly what occurred or pretending that things weren’t more complex than our history books often stated is not the answer.

braham Hicks tells us: The Basis of Life is Freedom, The Purpose of Life is Joy, And the Result of Life is Growth. Wow!!! This makes so much sense to me and has certainly been my experience.

Freedom of thought is the gift of being human; we get to choose our own truth and what actions we will take in response to our truth. Freedom is a feeling of being able to be authentically you without interference from outside sources. It is at the basis of our wellbeing. When we are authentically who we are and we accept ourselves without needing to judge ourselves as being right or wrong, we just chose to love our life, our relationships, nature, all that is as long as no harm is being done physically, emotionally or mentally.

I have had the opportunity to become aware of how my choices affect others and I have come to know that it is best if you choose for your authentic self. Not everyone will love your choices, and life can get pretty messy when not everyone loves the choices you make. This is where courage comes in.

Do you love yourself enough to be who you are even when others might reject the actions you choose to take? This is not easy and can cause emotional turmoil for yourself and others.

It seems that our world is currently trying to figure out how to be the best environment for each of us and everyone is on a different page as to what that looks like. So, the only answer I have found is to go to the second truth that “Life is a gift, the purpose is Joy.” How do you find joy when emotional turmoil rears its ugly head? Go outside!! Sit with a tree or talk to a rock, love your dog, horse, cat, or any other pet you might have. It takes your

focus off the turmoil and into peace.

Be creative… something that takes your whole attention. The energy dissipates around the turmoil and you can reside in a place of peace. Use essential oils that release trauma. According to studies at New York University, the amygdala gland (the gland in the limbic system of the brain that stores and releases trauma in the body) does not respond to sound or sight or touch, but only releases emotional trauma through the sense of smell.

This comes from a book by Carolyn L. Mein, D.C., called “Releasing Emotional Patterns With Essential Oils.” Oils are listed for particular emotional release and seem to work very well.

So, that brings us to our third truth, “The result is growth.” Unfortunately, growth can be painful. We don’t always learn when things are going smoothly. My sister-in-law tells me some people in life are swimmers, others are floaters. We as a populace are being challenged with deciding to be floaters or swimmers in life. The choice is yours, but much reward comes from choosing to be a swimmer in your own life. What brings you joy?

Give it to yourself as often as possible. The more aware we are of what brings us joy, the greater will be our growth and freedom. Choose to uplift yourself and others. Blessing to all of us. Dove

Destined To Cook

I

made an observation, standin’ back behind the grill. I stirred the pancake batter. Thought, “This job sure ain’t no thrill.”

When the cowboys get together for a week out on the trail, I’m designated as the cook—at times I’d like to bail.

Now let me take you back, let’s say, some fifty years or so. I wrangled for my father. I was young and fit to go.

We were out of bed ’fore daylight, feedin’ horses hay and grain. And cinchin’ up the saddles, prayin’ hard that it don’t rain.

The smell of eggs and bacon put my nose up in the air. My father was the cook back then, none better, I could swear.

But time has forced her change on me. I never thought I’d cook. Now I’m flippin’ eggs and bacon. Sometimes feel like I’ve been took.

Cuz I watch the younger cowboys ride all day and not complain. I only lift one saddle, but my back sure feels the pain.

Those cowboys make it easy when they climb up on their horse.

Heck, I have to stack a rock or two—get help from any source.

But one thing is for certain, those young cowboys sure can eat!

I’ll fill ’em full of spuds and maybe apple pie to treat.

I’ve watched old Western movies. Every camp cook looks like me. They’re short and bald and grumpy. Dang near fits me to a tee.

Do I even need to wonder what my job is after cook? I heard one older feller say, “That’s one I’d overlook.”

A cowboy’s life is simple, but it seems to fly by fast. You’re timed by Mother Nature. No use wishin’ for the past.

So, I hope they’re not complainin’ cuz my cookin’s kinda slow.

And please don’t think I’m useless. I was you not long ago.

Bryce Angell - The outdoors has always been a large part of my life. My father was an outfitter and guide for 35 years and I was there to shoe and care for the horses and help him do the cooking.

We took many great trips into the Yellowstone area. Even now that I’m older, we still ride into the Tetons, Yellowstone and surrounding areas. My poems are mostly of personal experience. I am now retired and enjoying life to the fullest. I plan to do more riding and writing.

Markle said she doesn’t believe the Queen is a racist or white supremacist. Piers Morgan, a British TV personality who had a brief omnipresence in American media, said he believes Markle’s story is a lie.. And I believe that says everything.

Two young fish are swimming in the water and they pass an older fish swimming the other way. The older fish says, “Morning gents, how’s the water?” The two young fish swim on, and the one looks to the other and says, “What the hell is water?”

Blind certainty. Resting assured we understand what there is to understand. That’s what Piers Morgan was revealing, not overt or latent racism, necessarily. (And, for the record, Morgan walked off his show and later quit his show. He was not fired for stating his opinion.)

In our minds, we are not racist. We never wronged a person of another race in our entire life. In our hearts, we believe all mankind is equal. Because we see—and admire—the talents of people of color in all walks of life. Show us a white guy who thinks astrophysicist Niels Degrasse Tyson isn’t smart, and we’ll show you a

stupid white person. Tragedy and struggles can happen to people of all races, right? And so we walk through life thinking we are not part of the problem, therefore not realizing we can become part of a solution that goes so far beyond our limited perspectives and experiences.

For Piers Morgan, he has reconstructed the Harry and Meghan interview to believe Harry did not say he had a conversation about Archie’s skin color with anyone.

While it’s true that part of the more detailed conversation happened when Winfrey interviewed Markle solo, Harry did in fact corroborate the conversation happened. He has also never publicly stated anything that invalidates his wife’s statements.

Morgan also claims that Royal Family protocol doesn’t permit the great-grandchildren of the monarch to receive princehood and security protection. It’s a budget thing, more or less, Morgan and other (especially white folks) observed. Well, yes and no. One day, when the now 94-year-old queen dies, Archie would be a grandchild and would indeed qualify for the title and its protections. According to Markle, the conversations she took part in made it clear conventions would be changed to not make Archie a prince. Morgan’s willingness to speak out against Markle and stand up for the monarchy is not an act of racism. He has logical reasons to argue what he believes. He’s not making up facts to reach his conclusions. Rather, he’s reaching his conclusions with only the facts that can lead him to his conclusion. He is blindly certain his perspectives are enough.

But what conclusion would Morgan have reached were Meghan not black or, for that matter, not American? I have a hunch he would have done his homework and would have learned quickly that in 2012 Queen

Elizabeth had gone against protocol for the children of Harry’s brother Prince William (he’s married to a white British woman if you’re keeping score) and named all of his children prince and princess. Protocol dictates only the eldest child of Prince William should have been given a title.

Winfrey did her homework. And although she didn’t know going in what Harry and Meghan would say, her experience as a Black woman in the circles of power probably gave her an inkling. She has been that fish out of water, wishing people could just see their world more clearly. She was trying to get us thinking and talking about what we’re all swimming in. And now we all are.

Local I.T. department opens in Hailey

here are few things in life more frustrating than having computer issues. In fact, in our new Zoomtown age, the old saying of “swearing like a trucker” should probably be replaced with “swearing like someone with I.T. issues.”

“We depend on technology so much now that we feel hopeless when it fails us,” said Chad Bertoni, the owner of the new Click It franchise in Hailey. “We understand how frustrating it is when I.T. isn’t working properly and we can help. We can make that frustration go away.”

After spending a decade as the vice president of new business development for a Twin Falls-based technology company, Chad and his wife Jennifer decided to open a Click It franchise in Hailey. They saw a real need for more Information Technology as well as general business support in a place they’ve fallen hard for.

The Bertonis spent the past 30 years visiting family who live here and decided to make the Valley their home in 2018. They have a son attending Wood River High School as well as two daughters who reside locally. Another son lives in Meridian.

“We love the town of Hailey and we recognized that there was a huge need for more I.T. help here and for the whole Valley,” Chad said.

While Chad certainly has the experience to open his own Information Technology business, he felt that teaming up with a well-respected national franchise like Click It would be a more beneficial move for him and for the community.
