Editor’s Note: In the last issue of Wood River Weekly, we looked at the housing supply plan for Valley jurisdictions from Hailey north. What follows is a summary— recent highlights, really—of what each governing body from Hailey south is doing to make sure the working class and high-net-worth folks of this mountain getaway don’t resort to moving or wintering somewhere else.

It was like 2020, but one year worse

y now you’ve probably come across more than your fair share of year-in-review articles or Top (fill in the number and category here) of 2021 show segments. But have you talked to anyone recently about time? It’s like our memory banks have taken the equivalent of a gap year, but the cruel joke is that it’s actually two.

If you’re keeping track: • The “insurrection” happened this year, in 2021 • The George Floyd vigils/protests/riots happened last year, in 2020 • The novel coronavirus causing COVID-19 happened in 2019—that’s what the “19” is for And what do all three of those things have in common? A collective, agreed-upon reality is not found there. Enter the media—and not necessarily the journalistic kind—to help us ponder all the goings on of our time. Movies like “Don’t Look Up” are less about their plot—our horrifying reaction to the horrifying news that a planet-killer comet is hurtling toward Earth, and more about their metaphor—our horrifying reaction to the current pandemic.

So, what follows are some Valley highlights from 2021 that make it clear it was a really, really weird year, again. Cheers to 2022 and getting a grasp on reality, for a change. Now, back to the question of the day: Q. How would you behave if scientists and the government told you a comet was going to destroy Earth?

A. Look through this year in rear view, and you might have an idea of what you’d do or not do.

Officer TikTok In April, in a clear and dare-it-be-said even understandable venting session—on video and not for the first time—about the assumptions civilians make about officer behavior in the line of duty, Bellevue deputy marshal Nate Silvester’s opinions went viral. While on duty and in uniform and in his police car, Silvester pretended to be responding to a violent knife assault while checking in by phone with LeBron James on how best to handle the matter. So far, so close to the line.

Silvester crossed that line when his fictitious version of the NBA star asked what color the guy with the knife was. Silvester, in character, asked James why that should matter and went about trying to handle the make-believe situation to the best of his ability while handcuffed by political correctness. What all of it showed was that Silvester may have been handcuffed by his own assumptions—specifically, about those who speak out against instances of law enforcement’s excessive use of force. It’s not hard then to imagine the assumptions that were made by May. Silvester garnered well over half a million dollars from a GoFundMe campaign put together in his honor. By May, he also garnered a book deal from Houston-based DiAngelo Publications and a firing from the City of Bellevue for a series of alleged policy violations.

Nothing To Fear But Fire Itself Severe drought conditions. Plenty of “fuel” to burn. Increased population and activity in the region. And winds and temperatures that could make a climate-change denier think scientists may be on to something. Those were the conditions in 2021 that had local leaders and fire officials sounding a pre-emptive alarm preparing the Valley for the worst—a wildfire raging through town.

Fire department officials across the Valley made public presentations on fire safety. County commissioners made it a crime to shoot off fireworks and to shoot at exploding targets. But—or thanks to all that safety prep—the most dangerous fires never came to the Valley during the late summer months and into October, aka fire season.

who find themselves cramped and not at optimal operating conditions, they say, in their current digs.

It’s The Stupid, Economy “It’s the economy, stupid,” is a phrase that Democratic political consultant James Carville made popular—and overused—last century. Last year, the behavior of the economy was something that could make a person feel a little stupid, especially if they were explaining it right.

For one thing, we entered a pandemic with an economy that was—if using a number of classic indicators—very strong. Low unemployment?

Check. High stock prices? Check. Housing market strong? Check. In other words, collectively at least, the nation was set up to, at best, handle the storm and to, at worst, take a serious hit it could still recover from (maybe even build back better). Where on that “best of times, worst of times” spectrum our fiscal reality actually lies depends on who you’re asking.

For small businesses, the tsunami of labor shortages and plenty of COVID restrictions was something not even a PPP loan could help keep a business afloat. For any government entity, the boom in population—permanent or otherwise—spelled higher revenue from things like property taxes and sales taxes, such as local-option-tax (LOT) receipts.

HOUSING Save The Plan The plan to preserve 65 acres of open space in perpetuity at what’s commonly known as Warm Springs Ranch means off-leash dog access, creek and habitat restoration, new water-conscious irrigation system, walking trails, informal gatherings and activities, Nordic ski and snowshoe trails, and public restrooms could find their forever homes there soon. And development, organized sports and reserved private or commercial events would be severely restricted or forever denied.

But time—and generosity—is of the essence.

There are only days left to meet the $1 million match on donations received by Dec. 31, which would lead to a $1 million reduction in the sales price of the Warm Springs Preserve property. Match donations now total $807,572, leaving $192,428 needed to meet this critical goal, the City of Ketchum said in a press release from Tuesday.

With a campaign committee member’s recent pledge to match up to $1 million in donations received before that deadline, the chances of getting the price reduction are promising. Combined, these two incentives mean that donations made by Dec. 31, 2021, are essentially tripled. The total fundraising goal would then be $9 million instead of $10 million; $8 million for the property acquisition and $1 million for irrigation and essential site improvements.

“Thanks to our community and the pledge for a matching donation, we are dollars away from reaching the $1 million match,” said Mayor Neil Bradshaw. “There is not much time left, but I feel confident that we will meet this goal through generous year-end giving from those who cherish this property.”

Snow Plow Tractor Fatality In Ketchum

On Thursday, Dec. 16, at approximately 4:52 p.m., Blaine County Sheriff deputies responded to a technical rescue with North Blaine County Fire Department and Ketchum Ambulance to a single-vehicle accident on Cold Springs Gulch Road in Ketchum.

Upon investigation, it was determined that Alex McDonald II, age 75, of Ketchum, was plowing snow on his driveway on a green John Deere 640 tractor with a plow attachment when the tractor came close to the edge of the driveway, slid off the edge and down a steep embankment. As the tractor fell from the roadway, it rolled several times, ejecting MacDonald, who did not survive. McDonald was taken to Wood River Chapel by Blaine County Coroner Russ Mikel.

Education Foundation Awards $80K To Teachers, Schools

The Valley’s premier fundraising entity for all things education has set a record. Blaine County Education Foundation (BCEF) announced it has awarded more than 65 so-called Innovating Grants to teachers and schools throughout all eight Blaine County public schools.

This year marked the greatest number of applications submitted by teachers as well as the largest dollar amount requested.

Blaine County Education Foundation Teacher Grants awarded to teachers and schools bring innovative ideas, concepts and enrichment materials to the classroom to enhance learning opportunities for students. The grants provide materials above and beyond what teacher budgets provide. Most of the applications were for curriculum support, such as literacy reading decoders for Hemingway and Carey elementary schools.

BCEF received STEM coding and robotic applications for Alturas Elementary, Hailey Elementary and Hemingway STEAM School.

Many of the materials will be available to support student learning for many years. All requests were for over $3,000.

Governor Selects Bellevue Mayor To Replace Muffy Davis

With the impending resignation of Representative Muffy Davis from Legislative District 26 Seat-A effective Dec. 31, Governor Little has selected Ned Burns to complete her term.

nce upon a time I wrote a line in a short story— it was more like a poem—somewhere that went like this: “We got high as a kite one night, and discovered that the world will be united and the world will be at peace, but only at the moment we have a shared, visual experience.”

I still believe in the impact of shared visual experiences. I don’t still believe they’d lead to unity and peace. I just hope they do.

“Don’t Look Up” is a film dealing with this idea of a shared visual experience, specifically that of a “planet-killer” comet heading toward Earth. More specifically, how do we spend our time when everything—or nothing—is at stake. The film is now streaming on Netflix, and probably playing normally in a theater somewhere, too. It’s relevant now because this is the time of the year we think about time most. “Do you have any New Year’s resolutions?” is December’s small-talk version of “What do you think about this weather we’re having?” much of the rest of the year.

The toughest part about an end-of-the-world movie is how to end the film, which another “here comes the

meteor” movie called “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” (2012) probably does better than any film will ever do again. And to a degree, “Don’t Look Up” borrows heavily from its predecessor. As for the rest of the plot, “Don’t Look Up” makes every second of every scene worth waiting for and is several notches more artistically potent than a film like “Idiocracy” (2006) that also used comedy to attempt social commentary. The resounding comment: We are all crazy, or worse, we are all stupid.

No matter how blue, red or purple your personal politics are, you’ll have a hard time evaluating the message of these films honestly, or at least without a zero-sum-game political lens. So that brings me to the visual experience I had Sunday night, “Hamilton.” Although the show is named after one of the most divisive—and influential— political figures in history, you’ll have a hard time choosing sides once the Americans overthrow the Brits and have to figure out for themselves how to rule themselves.

What “Hamilton” is about goes beyond the politics of a different time. Its message is about time itself. Even its unique stage turns in clockwise and counterclockwise circles to denote passages and reversals of time. In other words, the play isn’t about time, it’s about how shocking it is what we do with it.

And all this leads me to how I plan to spend the majority of time in 2022 writing and/or editing this column. In 2021, it was called “4th Estate,” a reference to the term for the press and its role—for better or worse—in shaping politics. Starting in January, this column will focus on reviews of film, theater, music, and the rest of the entertainment world. The column will have a new title, “The Republic.” It’s a reference to Plato, the Greek philosopher who, in his writing called “The Republic,” said “What is honored in a country will be cultivated there.”

I can think of no better way to understand a civilization than through its art, especially film. So cheers to the first sunrise of next year; the Wood River Weekly is ready to “fade in” now.

OUR VOICE COUNTS The biggest shopping month of the year has made a bigger mess than usual at our cardboard recycling sites. Wrapping paper inside of pasteboard boxes inside of corrugated boxes were placed in, around or falling out of the dumpsters. Then heavy snow covered the blowing trash, making it impossible for the haulers to pick up their load completely.

Boxes left outside of dumpsters require the driver to spend additional time emptying the dumpster and then getting out and filling it up by hand with the boxes lying on the ground before emptying it again.

When the load gets to Ohio Gulch, it is dumped on the floor and workers need to sort through the mountains of snow-packed paper products to take out everything that isn’t corrugated to make their bales truly recyclable.

The City of Hailey is looking to improve on this system and has asked the Climate Action Coalition (CAC) to help monitor the site as Hailey transitions to a new system for corrugated recycling. In the new year, the dumpsters at Hailey’s Park & Ride lot will be replaced with one onsite compactor and baler. This compacter will remove the need for Clear Creek Disposal’s daily pick-up of the current nine dumpsters.

One tip for recycling right: • Bring only flattened boxes of corrugated to the site • Is your box corrugated cardboard? Look at the edge of the cardboard. If there is a wavy waffle of paper sandwiched between two heavy layers of paper, then your cardboard is corrugated. Cardboard without the wavy paper sandwich cannot be recycled in Blaine County.

WILL SOFT INQUIRIES HURT YOUR CREDIT SCORE?

oft inquiries, sometimes known as a soft credit check or a soft credit pull, do not impact your credit scores because they are not attached to a specific application for credit. They can occur when a credit card issuer or mortgage lender checks a person’s credit for preapproval purposes.

Examples of soft inquiries are when you check your own credit or one of your current creditors checks your credit. If you are concerned about the negative impact on your score, specify to the lender that you want a “soft pull” to see if you qualify for preapproval.

Soft inquiries may appear on your credit report but should not adversely affect your credit score.

Consumers are entitled to one free copy from each major credit bureau, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, once every 12 months available at AnnualCreditReport.com.

Hard inquiries occur when a borrower makes a new application for credit. These will impact your credit score and will remain on your credit report for about two years. The impact is usu-

ally minimal and scores tend to rebound within a few months if no new negative information appears.

Borrowers may be concerned about multiple inquiries when they are shopping for rates or even approvals. Scoring models have algorithms to account for this situation if the inquiries take place in a 14 to 45-day period.

Even a hard inquiry should not necessarily concern you, and probably will only play a minor role in your score. Soft inquiries, regardless of how many you may have, will not impact your score.

Working with a trusted mortgage professional and sharing your concerns in advance of the “hard pull” is valuable. This mortgage professional may even be able to advise you on some things that could improve your credit score, which may actually improve your score, which could result in qualifying for a lower rate that could save thousands and possibly tens of thousands of dollars over the life of your mortgage.

NO BONES ABOUT IT THE “WEEKLY” FISHING REPORT FOR DECEMBER 29 - JANUARY 11 FROM PICABO ANGLER

T

his December has shaped up to be a cold and wet one. Winter fishing has been decent on pre-storm, cloudy days, but has been slow when we get a day of clear skies and sun.

When this happens, the second day after a change is always good, be it sunny or cloudy. The fish just need 24 hours to adjust.

Winter fishing can be well worth the cold fingers and icy guides if you can change your tactics slightly. When the consistent Midge hatches just aren’t happening, you must rely on fishing streamers and nymphing in deeper and slower water. With the fish in slow, deep water, you can be sure that if you find one, you’ll find others nearby.

Another upside to battling the temps is being rewarded with bigger fish. The winter brings out those larger fish looking for a big food source, so don’t be shy to throwing some bigger flies!

Silver Creek has had some great days of streamer fishing when the conditions are right.

The snow on the creek will make some off-color water—this can really help the streamer fishing.

The best fishing has been from the Highway 20 bridge down, due to the fish moving to their winter holding areas. Remember to walk slowly and make your casts count. Mix up retrieves as you go; you never know what they are looking for so it’s good to change retrieves often. Fish unweighted flies and be ready to see the chase as well as the eat on the surface.

The Big Wood is fishing fair in the lower river and better higher up near Ketchum. Those classic patterns like the Griffith’s Gnats and Tie-Down Midges in small sizes have been working lately if you are wanting to throw bugs on top. If you are fishing subsurface, make sure to have some small, jigged nymphs and big rubber legs on you. Find deep pools and fish them well.

The lower Big Lost is fishing well. Make sure to bring your best dropper nymphs. Fish are grouped up here in deep runs and holes. If you are wanting a numbers day, stay in deep water and fish some micro nymphs. The lower Lost River is tough and not enough anglers approach the water slowly.

Those fish are closer to the bank than you think. Midges are starting up so be prepared to use your small Midge Emergers, or the classic Griffith’s Gnat.

‘BALANCE’ IN ALL THINGS DOG

hese days, if you do an Internet search about dog training, you will find extremes from one end of the spectrum to the other. I read an article the other day that talked about “the state of your dog’s mind” in how it relates to the dog responding to a simple command like “sit.” It was encouraging that we consider what the dog was feeling before we ask a dog to do something.

My thoughts about this came quickly.

What happens in an emergency situation where you need the dog to “come” because there is a moose in the trail? Do I stop and ask myself, “How is my dog’s state of mind?” before I tell him to “come”?

The new trend is “force-free and intimidation-free” training. In another incident, I saw an advertisement for only positive gun dog training. I just can’t imagine how one can use only positive reinforcement with a dog whose hunt drive is stronger than his toy or food drive. Maybe I am not being creative enough.

A dog’s life is not dependent upon whether he feels like doing something. This would be the same as a spoiled child that decides to spit on someone’s food in a restaurant!! (This indeed DID happen to me with a 6-year-old boy whose parents never even apologized!).

I guess he felt like spitting but there were no consequences for his actions. When this boy grows up, his life is not going to be fun when he decides to commit some crime because he

feels like it.

While I don’t encourage folks to treat their dogs like their babies, there are many similarities to childrearing. When we fail to provide some sort of consequence for unacceptable behavior, we are not giving the dog the entire picture. In real life, there are consequences. If a dog bites a porcupine, he gets quills in his snout. If a dog offends another dog, the other dog will respond with a consequence—a growl or a raised lip, or more.

The consequence depends entirely on the dog and if it makes sense to him as a dog.

While I cannot sit here and give a list of consequences for every incident, I can say that consequences should be quick, confident, and FAIR, and in line with the infraction.

Just like in our lives, jail sentences strive to reflect the severity of the crime.

The day of brutal consequences is over.

But, the extreme of no consequences has infiltrated to such a point that now many dogs abuse their owners. Yes, DOGS CAN ABUSE THEIR OWNERS! A dog with no manners can pull someone over and hurt them seriously. I had a friend whose 110-pound dog pulled her over and BROKE HER FACE! Yes, she had to have several reconstructive surgeries. However, she and her husband had been told they could only use a flat collar or a harness on Brutus AND told they should never say “no” or raise their voice. If they did, it would be cruel to the dog. Truly, who was cruel to whom in this scenario?

In all things there is a time and a place. Our job is to be reasonable, fair and “balanced.”

It sure can be hard if you don’t have experience. It is imperative that we know what is acceptable for dogs to do, and we need to know what is effective to help the dog learn the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behaviors.

THE THINGS WE DO NOT SEE I

walk early in the morning. When it is really dark (no-moon dark), I make sure not to turn on any lights so that my eyes are pre-adjusted when I step outside and start down the driveway. I have done this routine enough that putting on my shoes is simply a matter of reaching out, having my hand run into my boots, and then lacing them up as I sit in the dark garage. I do not think I make too much noise.

And so it was that I stood up only to hear something moving behind my car and then the opening and closing of the dog door.

Ummmm… The usual flash of thoughts ran through my head, which started out with a very calm and interested “That was something leaving the garage” to the somewhat nervous “What is the biggest thing that could fit through the dog door?” to my I’m-stillafraid-of-the-dark-induced “Should I run?”

Since this event, I have searched the area and found only this—the edge of the dog door has been nibbled enough that something can easily push in and out. No droppings. No fur. No spoor of any other kind.

This mysterious mammal has been on my mind (I assume it is a mammal, because if

there is a snake or mobile plant living in my garage at this time of year, I will need to invoke a totally different suite of skills to figure out my next move). The recurring theme represented in this latest episode is “The things we do not see.” And there is no better time to appreciate all the other unseen beasties out there in our world than after a fresh snow Since winter showed up, I marvel at all the tracks crisscrossing my own. Across my relatively straight line are the footprints of a fox, moving about, surveying little pockets of smells here and there, always visiting some exposed tuft of grass. The deer tracks are elongated, connecting one clump of trees to the next. Intermittently, there are the faintest tracks on top of the snow, made by an animal so light it barely sinks into the fresh powder. Invariably, around these are the slightly heavier dumbbell prints of the weasel, no doubt looking for the delicate snack.

Rapidly becoming my favorite, though, are the tracks of the rabbit. On one hand, I just love that rabbits hop and bound and explode across the snow. On the other, I just love how much even one rabbit moves about.

I included a photo with this essay that may not be ‘readable.’ It shows what, I think, is one rabbit moving around the driveway of

my in-laws’ house. Over the course of two days, this rabbit has tracked almost everywhere. There are droppings, openings to tunnels beneath the sage, evidence of small nibbles taken from exposed bushes, and what looks to have been a rabbit festival there are so many footfalls.

There is something about this specific rabbit, and the world he or she represents—the one unseen and wild that moves about at night and during the day—that makes me profoundly happy.

That happiness is filled with curiosity and wonder, both of which overwhelm and override my fears as the dog door slaps closed and the garage is quiet and dark. I think I am alone again. Oddly, I am reassured that I am not.

THAT’S A WRAP: 2022 FAVORED EQUITY SECTORS

A

t its December meeting, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, announced that the run of easy monetary policy measures taken since the beginning of the pandemic are winding down. Powell indicated that once the monthly bond buyback program ends in early spring, the Central Bank will target three .25 interest rate hikes in 2022. With the Federal Open Market Committee’s “forward guidance” in hand, our favored S&P 500 stock index equity sectors are as follows:

Financials. A positive economic recovery, the tapering of monthly bond purchases, and the signaling of an upcoming interest rate hike all favor companies listed in the financial sector.

Consumer discretionary. Low unemployment, high savings rates, strong credit, and job openings boost stocks representing nonessential goods and services. As consumers feel more secure spending money, discretionary products and services tend to outperform.

Industrial goods. Best levered to economic recovery. Supply backlogs, low inventory levels, and elevated demand for new orders help the diverse industrial sector.

Communication services. Well-positioned to benefit from increased global connectivity. Metaverse trends should present Kristin Hovencamp is an Investment Executive and opportunities over the coming years.

was blessed with the opportunity last week to have a long conversation via cellphone with an athlete who competes at a world level in rodeo. What a gift it was as we started talking about where your focus goes, energy flows.

We discussed how best he could focus his energy for the competition for which he was involved. We talked about taking focusing breaths before beginning his event and becoming one with the animal involved in his particular competition. The respect given the animal was so important, and calming his conscious mind gave him access to stored energy. Again, where your focus goes, energy flows, and if you are in joy, then you create great stored energy.

Science has said that our conscious mind leaves our body every 28 seconds. That means your subconscious takes over and becomes automatic and your conscious mind can be in the past or future or on anticipating problems that don’t even exist at this point in time. Can you imagine if you did not let your conscious mind wander and you stayed fully conscious with the activity you were doing?

Remembering the conversation with this young man, I had the chance to practice what I preach as I was baking perfectly crafted pumpkin pies for my grandson. My mind was elsewhere and I was battling a negative thought pattern that I wanted gone. So, I said, “God, take this thought away, as it does not serve me.

I don’t want this energy.” At that moment in time I had one of those beautiful ‘Aha’ moments about past energy with my mom. I re-

can well imagine the predicament of writers facing deadlines. This problem usually boils down to the choice of subject matter. In my case, I am afraid this is either a fear of lacking anything interesting to say, or that suddenly several topics arise at once in a barrage of potentially noteworthy experiences.

As I write this from Oklahoma City, I can’t resist an account of my evening here with family, because I have seldom laughed as consistently and felt so much a part of a gathering as I experienced last night in my “new” niece’s home.

I have already introduced to readers and friends my unexpected and positive experience of finding the family of my birth mother just three-and-ahalf years ago. Since the first phone call from my then-discovered half-brother Bob, I knew I was blessed beyond imagination. He phoned me, introduced himself, and said, “Welcome to the family.”

Indeed, I have experienced an acceptance and blessed set of relationships in the later stage of my life and at a time when most of the wonderful family who adopted me are gone. I count myself lucky to gather with new family and friends like this.

I was included in a hilarious “white elephant” party last night given by my sister-in-law’s family.

The wrapped and unlabeled white elephant I chose (completely randomly) was a glass coffee mug with the inscription “Old People Matter.” I responded JoEllen Collins—a longtime resident of the Wood River with a joke about inviting me because I’d make Valley— is an Idaho Press everyone else feel young! Recently, someone pointed out that my new brother Bob is my HALF brother and that the label I use of “brother” is inaccurate. I don’t agree. I spent almost all of my life with my adoptive family without any blood connection, never thinking of myself as less than a full, legitimate member of the Gifford and Johanson families. I understand that I could have grown up with blood relatives who didn’t accept me for many reasons. Fortunately, both of my families would likely have provided the comfort, joy, and laughter that I crave. When I was in high school, my dates would often hang around when meeting and laughing with my father, who had a silly way of making people happy. Although I wasn’t born with his DNA, laughter infused my love for my parents. My sister-in-law has an infectious and ever-present laugh. I share with her and my brother an appreciation of the happiness evident in my Oklahoma family, and believe that indeed some of my love of life through laughter is in my DNA. There is a new yoga practice a friend of mine attended through a class called “Laughing Yoga.” There, the expectation is that sharing rounds of laughter is another kind of therapy, a release of the joy that we all are able to access.

alized that cooking with my mother was one of the things that brought me joy, especially at Christmastime. She made wonderful candies and I always got to lick the pan. I had never realized my connection to food was about trying to recreate wonderful memories with my mother. I was suddenly free from any negative energy and could be fully present with the food I was creating.

What if we all started practicing being fully present with whomever we were talking to or with whatever we were creating. We would only be focusing on one thing at a time. I have so often found myself thinking of what I was going to say next when talking to someone.

Rather than focusing on them, I was focusing on me. Can you imagine how quickly we could change the world if we all focused on healing our planet and each other? If we all joined our energies together to declare, “Give us truth, healing, and justice for all!”

That truly is all I want for 2022: freedom from all manipulation by outside sources. I want truth and then appropriate action. I am going to try to be fully present with each endeavor I pursue in this coming year. I am going to try to be fully present with myself, my joy, and each person I encounter. I am going to be fully present. I know this is a big task and will require much focus from me, but I know the energy I put into whatever I am doing will be focused and charged. That is the way to manifest. Concentrate your love, your joy, your truth, and we can create freedom for all.

NEW YEAR’S EVE CHALLENGE

My wife gave me a challenge, one night on New Year’s Eve, to welcome in another year. I must have been naïve.

I’m usually in the sack same time as chickens hit their light. So for me to stay up extra late was really going to bite.

I hoped to stay awake by drinking Coconut Red Bull and munching down on smokie links. I could eat a belly full.

My wife bought cheese and crackers and she made her onion dip. Was I ready for the evening? This one I’d like to skip.

The kitchen clock chimed 8 p.m. with four more hours to go. My eyes were getting sleepy. Staying awake was touch and go.

At nine o’clock I ate the smokies, crackers and the cheese. Then tanked down all my Red Bull. Sleep was putting on the squeeze.

This time of night I usually watched the back of my eyelids. I realized this challenge was for crazy, younger kids.

At eleven sharp I closed my eyes to get a wink or two. It seems those winks turned out to be a little more than few.

I thought I heard my wife say, “Hon, it’s almost twelve o’clock.” By then I didn’t give a hoot. I was sleeping like a rock.

When I woke and looked around the room, I’d somehow climbed in bed.

And then I heard my wife exclaim, “Good morning, sleepyhead.”

How does a husband live it down? A wife just seems to know. She’d warned me not to close my eyes. Now she’s saying, “Told you so.”

Will I ever stop accepting a challenge from my wife? I know I should resist. It seems to always cause me strife.

So next year when it’s New Year’s Eve, sleep won’t be such a shock. I won’t be celebrating. I’ll be in bed at eight o’clock.
