Valley’s landmark festivals slated for 2022, SV Resort ranks No.1 again

s Valley voters headed out to the polls Tuesday to give their Valley leaders a job review—more or less, folks elsewhere seem to be pleased with life here. That is, if ski resort rankings and festival popularity are any indication. What follows is a rundown of some high-profile announcements by Valley institutions that were made over the last several days. One possible takeaway? Despite pandemics and housing crises, life in the Valley may be looking up.

Welcome Back Wellness The alternate versions of the Sun Valley Wellness Festival thanks to COVID look to be a thing of the past. That’s because leaders of the longest-running wellness festival in the world have set June 10–13 as the dates for holding the festival’s 25th anniversary event. Sun Valley Wellness Festival Passes, for both in-person attendance and the Virtual SVWF Experience—a popular remnant of the pandemic—will go on sale in early November at sunvalleywellness.org.

Passholders will have full access to all online session content through July 31, 2022. The festival said the Limelight Hotel in Ketchum will be serving as festival headquarters and is offering special discounted lodging rates for passholders.

The Sun Valley Wellness Festival, created in 1997 by a small but visionary group of community wellness experts and advocates, has grown into an internationally recognized event featuring top wellness experts at the Argyros Performing Arts Center and other locations. Sun Valley Resort piggybacked the accolades with an announcement that its 86th season will kick off on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, weather dependent. Hot cocoa, branded collector’s mugs, branded neckwear, and other give-aways will be handed out at River Run base throughout the morning along with live music entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. Sunny the Bear will be sure to make an appearance to commemorate opening day and another huge win for Sun Valley Resort.

The resort said guests can expect to see some updates and improvements this year, including a new servery at River Run that will assist with guest flow. Local foodie favorite Konditorei has been added to River Run, so guests can enjoy fresh coffee and pastries at both River Run and Warm Springs this season, as well as the Wok and Bowl station that will feature delicious Asian cuisine. The resort will continue to have bag storage this year at River Run, as well as an Après Bar outside the Lodge, so that guests can choose to remain in the fresh air for delicious post-skiing treats.

Protocols and procedures will continue to align with the guidance and scientific expertise from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Idaho Department of Health, and Blaine County Health Department.

Per city ordinances in Sun Valley and Ketchum, masks are required in indoor public spaces, regardless of vaccination status. The resort will not be requiring masks outdoors, including while in lift lines, on lifts, or in the Gondola but are encouraging guests to physically distance when possible. Guests are encouraged to continue to “Know Before You Go” and check the Sun Valley App or website for updates.

Ewe Are Happy Even though this year’s Trailing of the Sheep Festival is in the rearview mirror, planning for next year moves ahead. Organizers announced this week the next festival is slated for Oct. 5–9, 2022.

SV Community School Players to debut “Legally Blonde: The Musical”—the Gen Z ‘woke’ version

hen you tally up the aches and pains suffered across the industries impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, education and theater run a close second to—of course—healthcare itself. That means at 7 p.m. on Thursday night when the theater department at Sun Valley Community School kicks off three nights of what could be sold-out musical performances on the private school’s main stage, COVID’s collateral damage will begin to see signs of significant repair.

And, the performers—all of whom have been staying COVID-free and adhering to strict standard-of-care procedures for mitigating the novel coronavirus—have been cleared by the city to perform on stage mask-free. Audience, crew, and even the actors while backstage are still required to wear face coverings while indoors.

Act I—The Show Must … Get Changed Given theater director Kevin Wade’s self-acknowledged penchant for darker material—last year, during the pique of the virus scare, the school produced “Les Miserables”—one would anticipate a musical of similar emotional impact, or at least one that ponders the polarization we see across the politics of this land. Instead, they’ll be applauding “Legally Blonde: The Musical”—an early 2000s rom-com turned franchise (there were two sequels produced by the time the musical was made) that Roger Ebert described as “a featherweight comedy balanced between silliness and charm” and “impossible to dislike.” It’s hardly in the arena of “Les Miserables” or “Hamilton” and that’s a good thing.

“I was encouraged, that with everything going on for over a year now, to deliver something light,” explained Wade. “I can go dark in the spring,” the veteran teacher of five years said.

While the material is light—and wildly popular as both movie and Broadway musical—producing an in-person show is not, considering everything involved with returning students to in-person schooling, vaccine controversies, and a variety of economic insecurities. And when a two-decades-old story provides negative stereotyped characterizations of, in this case, a character who is gay, heavy lifting is required to make certain revisions that stand up to current-day mores.

For the most part, Wade had the students decide what lines and verses had to go. The Community School alum noted a general consciousness of empathy present in Gen Z and a particular emotional intensity in kids who gravitate toward

theater and the arts.

“This is a generation that really cares. These are the kids who wear their hearts on their sleeves,” Wade, a graduate of the NYU Tisch School of the Arts and master of fine arts recipient from Harvard University, said.

Act II—The Show Must … Go On “Everything seems ratcheted up right now … so naturally the anxiety level of the students is higher, too. And that has made the process move more slowly at times. “We’re just out of practice,” Wade acknowledged. “We all know that it’s the challenging life experiences that help us build our best performances. That’s what we’re hoping for this week.”

Hoping for and working toward that best performance is junior Rose Bicas-Dolgen, the lead actress who plays Elle Woods from sorority girl to Harvard Law School student. Close to 40 Upper School students are hard at work both on the stage and behind the scenes to bring this award-winning musical production to life. The musical is directed by Kevin Wade who, in addition to teaching theater, is the co-director of the Creative Arts Academy. It is choreographed

by Megan Mahoney, a Middle and Elementary School music teacher at the school.

Audiences will be treated to the story of Elle Woods, whose perfect life is turned upside down when her boyfriend Warner dumps her to focus on attending Harvard Law School. Determined to get him back, Elle charms her way into the prestigious school. While there, she struggles with peers, professors, and her ex. With the support of some new friends, though, Elle quickly realizes her potential and sets out to prove herself to the world.

Junior Brady Giles plays Warner Huntington III, junior Charlie Coulter is Emmet Forrest, and senior Priya Merchant is Elle’s friend, Paulette.

“At first glance, Legally Blonde might look a little like cotton candy, but it is full of great writing, infectious tunes, and layers of substance.

You’ll laugh the whole time, but you’ll probably also find yourself tearing up a bit. Oh, and there might be dogs!” Wade said.

Ranch property suffers severe fire damage

he 7,000-square-foot home known as Deer Creek Ranch, located approximately two miles west of Highway 75 out Deer Creek Road north of Hailey, was victim to a five-hour blaze that took more than three dozen firefighting personnel to put down on Saturday.

According to Wood River Fire & Rescue fire chief Ron Bateman, a passing motorist called 911 at 12:08 p.m. Saturday, May 29, after observing flames at the property. When the first crews arrived, they observed 10- to 15-foot flame lengths from the rear of the porte cochere (covered driveway) on the west side of the main living quarters. The fire was declared knocked down just after 5 p.m.

There were no civilian injuries or deaths because of the fire, although one firefighter was injured and treated and released from St. Luke’s Wood River.

“My wife and I were about a half-mile up the Marshall Lakes Trail when the call came in,” said WRFR Chief Ron Bateman. “I didn’t get to the fire scene until 2:30 p.m. By that time, the crews had been working incredibly hard for more than two hours. I am very impressed by the effort and thankful for all the agencies and personnel that helped out.”

Multiple additional departments had to be called to put down the blaze. In total, more than three dozen personnel with a dozen fire apparatus were on scene.

Wood River Fire & Rescue, Hailey Fire Department, Bellevue Fire Department, North Blaine County Fire & Rescue, Sun Valley Fire Department and Ketchum Fire Department were dispatched to the structure fire. The Carey Fire Department was requested later in the incident.

Because of the size of the structure and the dollar loss incurred, the Idaho State Fire Marshal’s office was contacted to lead the investigation into cause and origin, Bateman said. The Idaho State Fire Marshal’s office arrived Sunday morning and determined the cause to be electrical in nature. No estimated property loss figure is available. Bateman noted that the deputy fire marshal commented on the “great stop” made by the crews preventing something much worse from spreading across the Valley.

“I believe that we took some very specific lessons learned from a fire in East Fork late in 2020 and applied them on this incident with some success,” Bateman said.

Billionaire California developer Donald L. Bren has bought the 6,800-acre Deer Creek Ranch from Bill Burt. Hailey is located just south of Sun Valley.

Bren said he plans to build a home and maintain the property as a working cattle ranch, Burt said. ‘’There were several people who offered me more money who wanted to subdivide,’’ Burt said. ‘’I picked him because he said he was not going to subdivide.”

Bren, 57, the son of the late Hollywood film producer, is estimated to have a net worth of $1.85 billion, making him the 16th wealthiest person in the country, according to Forbes magazine. He is the largest landowner in Southern California, with thousands of apartments, 11.4 million square feet of commercial space and the prevailing interest in a company that owns nearly one-sixth of the land in Orange County.

Students Pie Educators’ Faces, For A Cause

The deal was simple. If Wood River Middle School students could raise one ton of food for The Hunger Coalition by Oct. 20, they would have a chance to “pie” their teachers and principal.

The students stepped up in a big way, bringing in a total of more than 2,418 pounds of canned goods over the 20-day campaign.

They celebrated the achievement with a pie party, during which students selected through a raffle were able to collect on the deal.

Mr. Rob Ditch, Wood River Middle School principal, and the teachers were happy to follow through on their commitment.

“I am so incredibly proud of our students for the effort they put forth to support their fellow community members during what is such a difficult time,” said Mr. Ditch. “This is a school community that truly cares about one another and doing the right thing.”

The food drive, dubbed “The Hunger Games,” was spearheaded by sixth-grade leadership students and teachers Melanie Bemis and Dan Gralenski. Each student in the school was challenged to bring three pounds of food to donate. They received a raffle ticket for each pound they donated, placing their name in a drawing to pie the principal and teachers.

The WRMS sixth-grade leadership class, composed of nine students, worked hard to make a booth for students to check in their canned food at the beginning of each school day. They also ensured each advisory class had boxes marked with a “WRMS Hunger Games” logo to collect food by classroom. Leadership students promoted the event, encouraged students and staff with reminder notes, collected food from advisory classes and posted a regular “leaderboard” in the school news twice a week.

The sixth-grade class raised the most food with 922 pounds, followed by seventh grade with 773.5 pounds and eighth grade with 669 pounds.

At halftime of the final eighth-grade WRMS football game, student spectators gathered around the field to see if their name would be drawn from the raffle. Ultimately, Mr. Carr, WRMS Spanish teacher and football coach, was pied by one of his football players. Ms. Bemis, the leadership teacher who facilitated the project, was pied by one of her seventh-grade leadership students. Mr. Gralenski and Mr. Ditch were pied by sixth-grade students.

The food raised through the effort will be delivered to The Hunger Coalition by the sixth-grade leadership class on Nov. 4.

EV Ownership Not So Easy

In a new corporate-conducted study from a leading auto insurance provider, Idaho ranked as the third-worst state for electric vehicle owners. The company based its research on three factors: • EV charging port density • Gas savings • Government incentives In Idaho, there are only 14 charging ports for every 100,000 people, and the state only offers three incentives for drivers of electric vehicles, compared to as many as 10 or more incentives in other states.

The three best states to own an EV are Massachusetts, Vermont and California, where drivers can save up to $8,000 by switching to EVs with financial incentives offered by their local governments.

Unattended Death On Hiking Trail

On Sunday, Oct. 24, at approximately 10:22 a.m., Blaine County Sheriff deputies responded to a report of a deceased male off the Long Gulch Trail at the end of Corral Creek Road, north of Ketchum.

Deputies were able to identify the deceased as Robert Worling Wallace, age 59, of Portland, Ore. Wallace’s vehicle, a black 2015 Toyota Tundra, was located nearby. The cause of death has not been determined, but foul play does not appear to be a factor at this time. Additional information may be released if and when it becomes available.

Reflections on Annie Pike Greenwood with IPTV’s Marcia Franklin

Tour Ketchum City Hall

The Hailey Public Library will host “Reflections on Annie Pike Greenwood,” a virtual presentation by Idaho Public Television producer and documentarian Marcia Franklin, on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 5:30 p.m. In 1934 Greenwood wrote “We Sagebrush Folks” which vividly documented early rural life in Idaho from a woman’s perspective.

“She was a woman ahead of her time, writing with wit and honesty about social and political topics, including those that personally affected women in her community,” said HPL programs and engagement manager Kristin Fletcher.

Marcia Franklin, who produced the Idaho Experience segment “We Sagebrush Folks: Annie Pike Greenwood’s Idaho” will discuss the life of Greenwood, her remarkable book and the series of discoveries that led to the 2017 documentary. Her programs have garnered numerous honors, including a George Foster Peabody Award, the Silver Gavel Award of the American Bar Association, and five regional Emmy Awards.

Two Valley Environment-Friendly Programs Look Up

The Wood River Valley’s dark sky reserve and the Treasure Valley’s higher-learning center will be partnering up, thanks to the nation’s aerospace agency.

The Boise State Physics Astronomy Outreach Program has been awarded a $1 million grant from NASA, which will bring outreach and education about the region to the community as well as a new STEM program to the university’s astronomy undergraduates. The Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve includes Ketchum and Sun Valley, spanning 906,000 acres—the third largest dark sky reserve in the world after Mont-Megantic in Quebec and Aoraki Mackenzie in New Zealand.

Meanwhile, the Wood River Valley Wildlife Smart Communities Coalition is reminding people they need to look out even when they’re looking up. The coalition recently launched a new website with information about living safely with wildlife, like our local mountain lions and black bears. The new website can be found at wrvwildlifesmart.org.

Gov. Little To Elect BC Commissioner

Voters hit the polls Tuesday to select a number of leaders to fill leadership positions around the Valley over the next several years.

But Gov. Brad Little will have a big hand in the makeup of at least one dais.

The early departure of Blaine County Commissioner Jacob Greenberg, who resigned last month as part of his retirement plans, means the Blaine County Democrats organization will take applications from candidates to serve the remainder of the term, until January 2023. State law provides that the party shall nominate three candidates. Little then appoints one.

Unlicensed Driver Strikes Two Ketchum Pedestrians

On Saturday, Oct. 30, at approximately 4:52 p.m., Blaine County Sheriff deputies responded to a report of a vehicle-versus-pedestrians collision on Sun Valley Road at Leadville Avenue in Ketchum.

Crash scene investigation determined that Aldo Quinones Inga, age 38, of Bellevue, was driving a red 2004 F-150 pickup truck west on Sun Valley Road with a passenger. Aldo told police that as he approached the intersection with Leadville Avenue, the sun was shining in his face and he could not see. Branden Howard Robinson, age 25, of Filer, and Tristan Ann Robinson, age 24, of Pocatello, were crossing Sun Valley Road in the crosswalk when Aldo’s vehicle struck and drove over both Branden and Tristan, dragging them into the intersection. Aldo stopped his vehicle on the other side of the intersection.

Both Branden and Tristan received significant injuries. Branden was sent via air ambulance to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center l in Boise. Aldo was issued a misdemeanor citation for Reckless Driving and Failure to Purchase a Driver’s License.

The First Infrastructure

here’s a reason why Alexander the Great is called “great” and other folks who conquered almost as much, just as much, or more, are not. Reader’s Digest version: He didn’t just conquer an area, he made it flourish. And he made it flourish not by just building roads or reinforcing arenas. The world under Alexander flourished because he spread Greek culture—specifically, in matters of education and with an expression of the arts.

Alexander’s influence was so great that the culture we attribute to Rome is us being a tad generous to the Romans. Those cultural elements are almost entirely Greek, and only thought of as Roman or Greco-Roman because when the empire of Rome spread, they knew they already had a good thing. Disney didn’t fix Star Wars, Disney bought the brand.

I bring all this up for two reasons. The first reason is because our political leaders have found a way to disagree about a whole range of things humans shouldn’t really disagree about. Things like paying for childcare for working parents and high-speed internet access for all. It’s not that any elected official doesn’t see the value of these things.

The issue is whether those things should be considered infrastructure. I’ll spare you the Webster’s definition, the traditional political spending meaning, and the reasonable 21st century meaning, because by the time elected offi-

cials agreed to call some stuff traditional infrastructure and other stuff soft infrastructure, they began arguing about how to pay for everything.

While I personally am for a New Deal level of government expenditure, this column is not about spelling out or refuting the merits of it all. Nor is it about explaining how it can be paid for. Instead, it’s about what the 4th Estate column is supposed to be about: looking at how the media, politicians and the culture in general have gone about articulating their thoughts and feelings. Poorly, I’d say.

We live in a free country with a 1st Amendment on paper and a sense of free political will in our minds. We get to choose our own course, a new course, and whatever course of action we decide is best for society as a whole.

Infrastructure is whatever we do or invest in that does the same thing—help us take actions that are good for society as a whole. I figured Congress would debate who to tax most to pay for it all, but I didn’t think they’d argue about what infrastructure is.

To not understand that high-speed internet and green energy are as purely infrastructure as it gets is to not be in touch with the world’s evolution over the last 30 years.

To not understand that childcare and clean water delivery is infrastructure is to not have true family values. And to find yourself agreeing with whatever is your party’s party line, is to find yourself lost in the weeds of day to day life.

And that’s what brings me to my final point. We should be adding education and the arts to our definition of infra-

structure. Education and the arts are the food and water supply of freedom. Starting Thursday night, you can support and enjoy one current implementation of the education and arts infrastructure by attending the Sun Valley Community School’s presentation of “Legally Blonde: The Musical.” It’s the first time in a long time the private school students, families and staff will gather in one place at one time all in the name of self-expression—both the cause and effect of a healthy and robust infrastructure.

NO BONES ABOUT IT THE “WEEKLY” FISHING REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 3 - 16 FROM PICABO ANGLER

W

hat a great time to be an angler in the Wood River Valley! With mild temps and cloud cover this week, you can expect the fall fishing conditions to remain steady. There is no need to be out on the water early—the best time for fishing will be early to late afternoon. Use these fishing windows to maximize your time, but if you are eager, you can always fish Streamers any time of the day!

Silver Creek shines during autumn. The fall bugs will hatch during the most pleasant part of the day, and the surrounding scenery on the creek is breathtaking. We’re seeing excellent hatches of small Baetis (size 20 – 24); be sure to have a selection of duns, cripples, and spinners.

While the numbers of October Caddis and Mahogany Duns are winding down, fishing these patterns can still be productive. In particular, blind fishing an orange or tan Stimulator, Goddard Caddis or Elk Hair Caddis in size 10 – 14 can be effective on breezy days. Midges are becoming more prominent on the creek and will continue to do so as the season progresses.

Small Griffith Gnats, Parachute Midges and Tie-Down Midges in sizes 18 – 24 work well on the creek when paired with long, fine leaders.

The Big Wood River has come up in levels since the snow and rain last week. Again, small Baetis and midges are the ticket on the river right now if you’re in search of some dry-fly fishing. Nymphing is extremely productive this time of year on the Wood, and fishing streamers on the lower river is the way to go when you are in search of big fish. Keep in mind this is the time to use all your Silver Creek lessons and techniques on the Big Wood. Spring creek tactics on low freestone waters is always a good bet in the low water months of the fall.

The Big Lost River is still very low below the reservoir.

You have a few more days to get over Trail Creek to access the Upper Lost, but your window for fishing is limited to the warmest parts of the day in the late afternoon. Nymphing will be most productive, but a small caddis or crane fly may get the attention of a hungry trout. The upper Lost still has some fishing and beautiful scenery—just be ready to cover a lot of water!

Collar, Collar, Touch My Collar!

I

must share a very distressing incident that happened this week. I was working with a client in their yard with a very sweet 7-month-old puppy. Across the field came a male Akbash, limping very badly. He had a collar and name tag on, and was somewhat uncharacteristic of the breed in his friendliness with other dogs, especially considering he was badly injured. He was not just limping, but would not put any weight on his rear leg, indicating to me it was VERY painful.

Many dogs in pain are not friendly at all!

But, this fellow wanted to play with the puppy I was working with.

This big guy clearly had a red collar on, with a name tag attached. When my client tried to touch his collar to read the tag, he growled slightly, then cried and quickly ran out of reach.

This was very distressing—that we were unable to touch his collar to read the ID tag.

Clearly, this dog needed veterinary attention immediately as it appeared he was bleeding on his foot from the distance we could get to him.

This brings me to something incredibly important in dog training that EVERYONE should do with their dog. Every dog should be collar-proofed. What does that mean? It means that every person you know should be able to touch your dog’s collar any time, any place. In an emergency such as this, many dogs, especially “power or guardian

breeds,” such as Rottweiler, German shepherd, Pyrenees, Akbash, Black Russian, Giant Schnauzer as examples, are not quick to allow a stranger to touch their collars. While I mentioned power/guardian breeds here, this is true of ANY DOG that is traumatized, lost or afraid. In the dog’s eyes, his collar is very personal and can be threatening.

In a dog fight, the neck is a very vulnerable place;, so many dogs are very leery about allowing themselves to be touched there.

Even the friendliest of dogs, like this guy above, can be protective of his collar/neck in a stressful situation.

How do you proof that? Start as a puppy, touch the collar, and then give the puppy a treat. It is so simple. Have friends of the fam-

ily also practice this.

This is so important. You may think your dog would let anyone touch their collar; however, many times this is not the case.

Being able to touch a dog’s collar can be life saving! I could only hope that this big guy made it back to his home by himself and his owners got him the emergency care he needed.

The Myth Of The Individual

The answers to these questions may be known, but many mysteries remain. For example, we look at the aspen in our yard and refer to it as an individual. But maybe it’s part of a larger clone, but still considered an “individual.” We tend to want individuals to exist; perhaps it is part of our Western reductionist mindset. But the gravitas of the individual in nature is greatly overstated. How can we understand the individual when, upon study, “we find it hitched to everything else in the universe,” as John Muir observed?

Dr. Susan Simard from the University of British Columbia has shown the world just how illusionary it is to see a forest as a collection of individuals competing with each other for light, water, and nutrients. In fact, it is truer to see the forest as a “wood wide web” of interactions mediated by fungi in the soil. The fiber optics of the soil is mycorrhizae, a Byzantine tangle of tree rootlets and fungal mycelium through which the forest communicates and shares resources.

Trees of one species feed carbon to trees of other species when there is a surplus for one and a deficit for the other. The ta-

e lump aspens into one species, Populus tremuloides, but some are clonal while others reproduce sexually. Some aspen populations are diploid, like you and me (every cell contains two sets of chromosomes, one from mom, the other from dad). But other aspens are triploid; each of their cells has three sets of chromosomes, not two!

In the photo shown here, two genetically distinct aspen clones are living side by side in Greenhorn Gulch; a yellow version in the foreground, its orange cousin in the background. While aspens can produce seeds through ordinary sexual reproduction, they can happily grow in large clonal groves, functioning essentially as a single individual. The trees within the groves, seemingly free agents bearing countless little green leaves that tremble in a summer breeze, are photosynthetic factories whose products actually feed their common motherly tangle of roots beneath the soil. Collectively, they are one living, breathing, genetically distinct individual.

The Pando aspen grove in Utah is one of the largest organisms on Earth, covering 108 acres (~80 football fields) and is made of thousands of trees having the same DNA. The Pando grove may collectively weigh up to 6,600 tons or more than six times the mass of the General Sherman giant sequoia in California. The Pando grove’s root system has been living for 10-16 thousand years, all the while sprouting a succession of trees that usually die before reaching 100.

We tend to think of species as “members of populations that actually or potentially interbreed in nature.” This works much of the time, especially in the animals we are most familiar with. But can a diploid aspen mate with a triploid aspen? The mother trees actively help their children, shipping more carbohydrates to them via the mycorrhizae in the soil than they do to unrelated seedlings. Some of the nitrogen in tree tissue can be traced to the ocean, hundreds of miles away, finding its way inland via salmon, who are eaten by bears, who poop in the woods, whose nutrients are parsed out and transported within the mycorrhizae beneath the surface.

We are at the dawn of this new science of relationships that show what First Nations and tribes across the globe have long intuited: we live within a connected world. There are no true individuals.

ryptocurrencies are here to stay. In 2008, when Satoshi Nakamoto published an abstract introducing Bitcoin, one could only imagine how it would transform the world. The concept, “a purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution,” is now a reality. Still, the world of cryptocurrency is challenging to understand.

Cryptocurrency, digital currency or virtual currency is a digital medium of exchange. Cryptocurrency uses encryption techniques to regulate the creation of monetary units and to authenticate the transfer of funds. When educating prospective users, PWC cautions that cryptocurrency has no intrinsic value, no physical form, and a central bank does not determine its supply.

can’t break the habit of subscribing to The New Yorker, even though every time I finish an issue I feel a great sense of accomplishment. Too many recent dog-eared copies are accumulating on my bedroom nightstand where I save articles and stories (poems are read quickly and some saved for my poetry file). I know I want to read every word but usually run out of time to do so. I came across dozens of torn-out features from a couple of years ago in a file entitled “Good Reads” when I was “cleaning out”—hah—my closet and still put them away for another day. As someone who loves good writing, I think I will always keep my subscription up. However, I have another reason: two of my leaders in non-fiction at the Breadloaf Writers Conference several years ago were Susan Orleans and Alex Wilkinson, both wonderful mentors and examples of gifted writers I hope never to miss reading in a weekly copy I might never buy.

Just yesterday I received my current edition of The New Yorker and added another reason I so love the magazine… the cartoons. I usually open my copy at the back page (now occupied by a crossword puzzle I swear I will start later) and then the next page with this week’s cartoon and caption contest.

Martin Luther King said, “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.” Yes, that adage still applies, but Bliet’s depiction reminds us of the conflict in what we may have believed to be our strong ship of state. This boat is still afloat despite the turmoil on it, but we don’t know if and where it will land. I would hope that maybe a quote by James Taylor may be truer than the discord portrayed here. He said, “Being on a boat that’s moving through the water, it’s so clear. Everything falls into place in terms of what’s important and what’s not.” I hope so.

Halloween, Courage And Innocence

hen I was a young person of about 12, I remember Halloween being one of my favorite traditions. In the small town of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, where I grew up, Halloween was always such fun. We all dressed up and took a pillowcase with us to fill with treats. There was no fear of anything bad happening with your treats or to you personally. Your parents didn’t need to check the treats to see if they were safe. No one would have considered harming a child in such a way. It was pure fun. We went in groups, dressed as something that was different than who we usually were, and as scary as possible. We were always blessed with the gift of the first snowfall just as you started home from trick or treating. What a time of beautiful innocence.

That does not seem to exist anymore and that makes me sad. So, I question, have we progressed as a species? Where and why did we lose that beautiful innocence and trust and what can we do to create a world of greater safety and truth for ourselves and our children? First of all, I think we must have experience at trusting ourselves. That only comes with trial and error. My dad always said, it does not matter if you fail, you at least tried, which takes courage, determination and effort.

I grew up with the courage to try things; you never know, it might just work. I never felt afraid of failure; you just look for another solution. Sometimes you would have to create several prototypes before you succeeded or decided it was time to scratch the project. That builds confidence. Have we become so protective of our feelings that we no longer have the courage to stand alone? Have we given all of our authority to the “science” outside of ourselves? The way our society has progressed has taught us to trust an authority outside of our own knowingness. That has to stop, because the agenda of an outside authority rarely has your best

interests at heart. The outside authority has their bottom line or control of the masses at their center. We have been indoctrinated to believe that we don’t have the knowledge to know what is best for our bodies and hearts. That knowledge only comes from the experience of doing and succeeding, or failing.

Take a moment of your day and ask yourself, “Do I trust my path? Do I trust myself to be okay if I make a mistake?” That is the bottom line—can you love yourself even if you are wrong or screw up? If you can, you have the ability to survive just about anything. Let us embrace all of the times we learned from our errors because we then learned new ways of being. I long for the trust and innocence I experienced as a child and the only way I know how to create that joy is to trust myself with all my heart; even if I screw up, I will have tried. I let go of any outside authority and claim that part of myself that says, “I know the way. Trust me.”

We will get through all of this but only if we think with our hearts and have the courage to be our own authority, to trust the love within. Much love, Dove

School Lunch Spinach

I noticed all the spinach cans stacked high up on the shelf. Not a single can was selling. Must be others like myself.

The pickled beets were sold. They’d placed ‘em on the shelf that morn. And spinach even took back seat to old-time canned creamed corn.

My loathe for spinach got me thinking back to second grade. I was standing in the lunch line, kinda timid and afraid.

The gal behind the counter, with her hair up in a net, served me corn and fried potatoes and some homemade buttered bread.

I must admit my old school lunch was looking mighty fine. Until she plopped the spinach and expected me to dine.

I tilted back the plate to keep the spuds from spinach juice.

There’s nothing worse for eating with your spinach on the loose.

I gobbled up my corn and spuds then gazed down at my plate.

The spinach wouldn’t vanish. Was I destined to my fate?

Well, Jackie Johnson drank her milk then wore the widest grin.

She opened up the carton and she spooned the spinach in.

So, I tore my carton till the top was open to a square. Then dumped the spinach, sealed the lid, and scurried out of there.

But the dang lunch lady grabbed my carton, shook it up a bit. I told her it was clabbered milk. She wasn’t having it.

I wondered, “Should I cut and run?” My legs were short but fast.

But then I heard the principal. His word would be the last.

resident Ronald Reagan quoted John Gillespie Magee’s poem High Flight after the space shuttle Challenger exploded Jan. 28, 1986, when he said to the grieving nation, “They slipped the surly bonds of Earth …. and touched the face of God.” Although we sobbed when those words were spoken, those words at the same time gave us such amazing comfort.

I received a call from the Jerome Hospice Home’s nurse on Sept. 21 and was told they believed Mom would die soon. I left my office and went directly to the Hospice Home. I called my brothers, my sister and my dad and told them what was happening; none of them felt they had the strength to witness her death. I was, however, surrounded by an incredible, loving staff of people all day and into the night. The wonderful and caring Hospice chaplain, John Martinez, dropped by and spent time praying with me and comforting me. At 3:45 a.m. on Sept. 22, 2021, my strong, beautiful, loving mom touched the face of God. While sitting with me earlier that day, the chaplain said, “You are very brave, Shawna, but right now you just need to be a daughter.” I looked at him and said, “I lost my mom a long time ago to Alzheimer’s disease.”

I have experienced anticipatory grief for years. Anticipatory grief is grief that occurs before the death and includes many losses, like watching a loved one who must give up driving, cooking or walking outside alone. Watching them lose their memories and their mental ability. And, worst of all, losing the relationship you have with your mom. Watching a loved one succumb to Alzheimer’s disease is horrible; you lose them way before they die.

As the facilitator of the CSI Office on Aging Caregiver Support Group, I have watched people living in anticipatory grief for many years. In many ways it is a relief when the loved one goes; the loved one is no longer in pain or fear or anxiety. But once the death happens, and you stop waiting for the next call, the next time an ambulance is called, the next call from the nursing home, and you lose that awful feeling of waiting for the next shoe to drop, you succumb to utter and complete exhaustion. The adrenaline you have lived on for years suddenly stops. And yes, the tears do flow.

The CSI Office on Aging is and was a valuable resource.

They provided home-delivered meals to my mom and dad through the senior center and qualified my parents for Homemaker Services. Ombudsman helped me find a facility for my mom. The entire staff has been a godsend to me over the last several years.

I also want to thank the readers of these newsletters. Many of you have called or emailed me about the articles I have written.

You have shared wise words and thanked me for sharing me and my parents’ journey. We have grieved together.

Dad is still home and his wonderful friend JL had him up at Magic for several days, where they shared lies and shared grief.

JL was widowed years ago when his wife Helen died. He is a great friend to our family.

he decision to buy first or sell first has always been a little of the “Which came first: the chicken or the egg?” type of question. Is it better to buy another home before you sell your current one or sell the current one before you buy the replacement?

Some buyers don’t have a choice because they need the equity out of the current home to purchase the new one and possibly their income limits their ability to qualify for having both mortgages at the same time. However, some buyers, with sufficient financial resources, may have other options available to facilitate the move.

A home equity line of credit, or HELOC, is a type of loan that a traditional lender like a bank will loan up to the difference in what is currently owed on the home and 75%-80% of the value. A borrower is approved for the line of credit and then can borrow against it as needed.

A homeowner with sufficient equity would want to secure a HELOC prior to contracting for the new home. Typically, the interest will be due monthly. When they sell the home, the loan would be paid off along with any other liens on the property like the first mortgage.

A bridge loan is different in that it is usually a specific amount of money for a short term used to “bridge” the time frame necessary to acquire the replacement property and sell the existing home. The amount available is like the HELOC, usually up to 80% of the home’s value less the existing mortgage.

Some lenders may require being in the first position, which may require retiring the existing first from the proceeds from the bridge lender.

Hard-money lenders are a little more flexible in some of their requirements compared to typical lenders, but it comes at a cost. They could charge 2 to 3 percent, called points, of the money borrowed, paid up-front, and the interest rate will be higher than long-term mortgage money.

Another alternative is to find a conventional lender who has a program that allows you to recast the loan in a specified period. The borrower would get a low-down-payment mortgage on the replacement home and, after the original home is sold and funded, the lender will apply the lump sum toward the principal amount owed and recalculate the payments and amortization schedule.

By recasting the loan, the borrower does not go through the process of getting a new mortgage by refinancing and saves the costs involved. Most conventional loans and conforming Fannie Mae and

Freddie Mac loans allow it after 90 days. FHA, VA and GNMA loans do not allow recasting.

Borrowers with 401(k) retirement accounts may consider borrowing against that asset, which could be a lower interest rate than other temporary options. Depending on the size of the 401(k), the amount available to borrow could be up to half the balance or $50,000, whichever is less. If the loan isn’t repaid in a timely fashion, there can be taxes and penalties.

In each of these options, the seller is involved in borrowing money to accommodate a purchase and sale of a home. There will be expenses involved but the advantage is that they have a better chance of realizing most of their equity while facilitating a purchase before they sell their home. This is particularly helpful in markets that are low in inventory.

One last option is to consider selling your existing home to an iBuyer or private investor. The attraction to this alternative is that they will make you an instant offer, buy your home, and you’ll have cash to use to purchase your new home. These companies or investors intend to resell the property, so they must discount the price they pay for your property, taking into mind they will be responsible for repairs, maintenance, selling fees and other expenses.

While it may sound appealing, you may discover that the amount you will realize will be less than if you sell your home in a conventional manner.

Your real estate professional will be able to do a comprehensive market analysis to indicate market value and the net proceeds you can expect to have. This will assist you in determining which option makes sense for you at this time. They can also recommend lenders and approximate timelines for each alternative.

The Community Table Breaking Bread And Building Bridges!

OUR VOICE COUNTS The Community Table, or La Mesa Comunitaria, is a student initiative led by about 10 founding students from Sun Valley Community School (SVCS), Wood River High School (WRHS), and a home school. These students have partnered together in an effort to set up neighborhood events in underserved areas of our Valley. The vision is to build bridges between people in our Valley by providing meals, joy, resources, and a sense of community to those in need.

Students from WRHS and SVCS have had ongoing opportunities to collaborate together and develop connections and friendships in a setting where they can break down stereotypes built about each other and their student bodies as they strive to be a positive, providing force in our community.

The initiative also provides an opportunity to realize friendships with various communities by creating a space in which people may talk and share stories among one another—building connections between members of the Valley who would have otherwise not been given a chance to meet or connect.

The Community Table/La Mesa Comunitaria is also an invaluable leadership opportunity for students who love our Valley and make up a part of our community. This nonprofit was not only founded by students, but is also entirely run by them, as well; planning, shopping, cooking, serving, set-up, running the activities, and cleaning up is all done by our student members.

At present, we have had the good fortune to connect with five communities, to hold eight events since April, to serve over 300 meals, and to work with over 60 volunteers to serve our community.

We’ve also had opportunities to collaborate with several community supporters in our Valley, many of whom have made donations to our cause, including The Youth Generosity Project, the I Have A Dream Foundation, Flourish Foundation, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, Church of the Big Wood, Albertsons, POWER Engineers, La Cabañita, Lago Azul, The Community Library, Atkinsons’ Market, Wood River Tortillas, and The Toy Store.

Our next event will be at the Wood River Community YMCA on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 2-5 p.m.
