This badger, seen in a snowy field north of Hailey, was digging through the snow in an attempt to excavate a food source below ground such as a mouse, vole, ground squirrel or rabbit. The American badger has most of the general characteristics common to badgers, with stocky, low-slung bodies with short, powerful legs. They are identifiable by their huge foreclaws (measuring up to 5 cm in length) and distinctive head markings. Badgers do not hibernate and are active year-round. Photo credit: Carol Waller
