BCSD’s $40 Million Ask Takes On Timing Questions State lawmakers throw wrench into school district funding plans

A

bill currently being considered by Idaho lawmakers that would limit bond and levy elections to November and May is throwing a bit of a wrench into a pending $40 million, 10-year Blaine County School District facilities proposal.

Nonetheless, at their Feb. 11 regular meeting, trustees unanimously decided to place the measure on the August ballot and are now scurrying to host at least one more public listening session to tailor the levy into something that could generate widespread support. The district and a special facilities committee have worked for months meeting with staff, parents and other taxpayers to craft a priority list of projects. But given the negative fallout associated with a previous and soon-to-run-out levy, folks are not confident the public is ready to foot the bill.

“The 2008-09 school district levy, to be blunt, was a felony,” said Valley resident John Galgano. “The district took a little less than $14 million from the stakeholders to build a promised elementary school. It didn’t happen.”

With funds from that levy nearing their end, the district has long known it will need to go out to the voters again. Special meetings, public surveys, and a whole lot of public debate later, BCSD is looking at a priority list of facilities upgrades, maintenance and overhauls it needs to find a way to pay for without pulling from the

general fund. Enter what will now be the August levy.

Meanwhile, at the Statehouse in Boise, legislators have offered up House Bill 393 (HB393) aimed at making sure levies, bonds and other taxing mechanisms get voted on by the largest number of people. Voter turnout across America is rather low for most elections, but for smaller elections like ones held in March and August, it is abysmal.

“The intent is good,” said Superintendent GwenCarol Holmes. “But it’s just the alignment and requirements with district budgeting … that doesn’t line up.”

Holmes told trustees she had a chance to address the concern at a District 26 town hall hosted by state Sen. Michelle Stennett (D-Ketchum). Holmes said she explained the timing issues, such as how putting the levy on a November ballot would mean it would be 14 months before those funds would be available to the district.

“I know it’s in their consciousness,” Holmes said, referring to state lawmakers.

Board Vice Chair Kelly Green told fellow trustees that her inquiry with lawyers revealed if the bond was placed on the May ballot and HB 393 ultimately became law, it would likely not get grandfathered in and would mean the district would have to go out to voters again.

A May ballot levy would also give the district less time to make its case with the voters. And given the tenuous relationship between the district and a significant portion of the public, communication with voters and

community buy-in is mission critical.

Ultimately, the board decided that putting the levy on the August ballot accomplished two things: • Enough time to build voter understanding and potential support • Enough time for the state to rewrite HB 393 or scrap it altogether As of press deadline Tuesday, the district still did not have a public listening session date or location nailed down.

Organizers of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival have put out an open call for artists to submit three photos of completed artwork accompanied with an artist’s statement. Selected artwork will be used within the festival’s merchandise such as T-shirts, hoodies and programs.

Local Skijoring Event Meets With Success Bellevue event hosts 75 teams, 1,000 fans

he “perfect storm” of good local weather, other regional event cancellations due to bad weather, and a heart-wrenching comeback performance by a 16-year-old cancer survivor made the most recent skijoring event the best one yet, organizers and community members said.

“I’ve been involved with this since 2012 and the most we’ve ever seen turn out is around 500 people,” said Michelle Bobbitt, secretary/treasurer for the WRESJA—Wood River Extreme Ski Joring Association. “On Saturday alone we had over 600. We sold out of food and beer. All we had left were potato chips.”

“My love for horses keeps me going, but if they didn’t love me back as hard as I love them, none of this would be possible.”

Devon Peterson, Skijoring competitor and cancer survivor Bobbitt said upwards of 1,000 people came out last weekend to 81 Browning Lane in Bellevue to witness 75 teams of paired-up horse riders and skiers take part in a niche competitive winter sporting event that may be regaining popularity in some parts. Skijoring originated in Scandanavian countries and is derived from a Norwegian word meaning “ski driving.” It involves one person on skis who is pulled by a horse and rider, a dog (or dogs) or a motor vehicle. The duo is timed for how long it takes them to get through a slalom or other obstacle course, and they are penalized if they miss a particular obstacle.

The Organizers As niche a sport as it is, skijoring is nothing new here.

In fact, Bobbitt explains, the Valley began holding competitions nearly 20 years ago and even used to hold two events per year at one point. Just prior to that, the North American Ski Joring Association was formed. The first

international sanctioned race wasn’t held until 2006 at St-Donat Airport, Canada.

In recent years, some new life was breathed back into the WRESJA, which now hosts one of eight competitions that lead up to the national finals March 14–15 at Red Lodge, Mont. The group has a formal board of directors and a healthy volunteer and sponsorship program, too.

“More volunteers, more effective marketing, it all helped us pull off a great event this year, but the weather helped, too,” Bobbitt said, referring to not only temperate conditions last weekend here but the fact that two regional events elsewhere got cancelled due to bad weather in January.

“I met people from Colorado who came out here after their other event got cancelled,” Bobbitt said.

The Comeback Kid Perhaps one of the biggest winners last weekend was someone who placed 12th and 14th against seasoned circuit professionals in her two events. And according to people at the event, her performance garnered a stunned crowd reaction.

Sixteen-year-old Devon Peterson, after finally getting clearance from her doctors, rode her horse Super Dave and pulled skiers Josh Blackburn and Hunter Storey to successful runs after a nearly four-year battle against leukemia. Peterson underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2017 and had the subsequent compromised immune system that comes along with that serious procedure.

At her doctors’ orders, Peterson had to stay away— at least at times—from dogs, horses, and even school, since not all students are vaccinated. This year was her first chance since her pee-wee competition days that she could fully engage. She competed as one of two local riders in the pro division on a horse her dad, Tyler, won on in Hailey in 2008 and in Jackson Hole in 2015. In 2016, when Devon was in treatment, her dad and Super Dave had the fastest time, but didn’t win for errors. Devon picked up where her dad left off.

“I was super-excited but super-nervous, too,” Peterson said. “It felt great just being a normal kid again.”

What Matters – History Or Experience?

Company of Fools To Stage ‘The Niceties’

e all have been, or known, that one student who asks too many questions, disrupts classes with arguments, and generally challenges professors. “The Niceties,” by Eleanor Burgess, brings us something akin to that sticky situation but in a way that raises the audience’s own level of awareness.

Directed by Company of Fools Producing Artistic Director Scott Palmer, the play will be presented at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey from Wednesday, Feb. 19, to Saturday, March 7.

“I can’t say enough about Burgess as a writer,” Palmer said. “It’s funny, too—a very real, cleverly constructed, remarkable piece of theater. It feels profoundly realistic. There’s a legitimacy of perspective.”

Janine Bosco, played by Claudia McCain, is an acclaimed history professor at an elite university in the last year of the Obama presidency. Zoe Reed, a brilliant young African American student, is played by Alexis Ulrich. During the course of the action, the women meet to discuss a paper Zoe is writing about the American Revolution.

The conversations have imbedded in them a myriad of issues: gender, class, age, race, revolution, American history and the academic process.

It’s heady stuff that plays with the idea of history as written by the victors, while ignoring the story of the oppressed. This insightful play allows audiences to alternate between both sides in this fast-evolving debate.

“Zoe wants to get her final paper in early, which is something I would do,” said Ulrich, who is majoring in theatre at Idaho State University. She most recently appeared in COF’s production of “Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley.”

“She’s close to me, I question things,” Ulrich said. “I also relate to her as being a student of color, and a junior in college, so it’s very familiar.”

“I show my black excellence to the world, and I hope, I hope, that the world sees it,” Zoe says in the play. The setup unspools with electricity.

“I’ve dealt with some of these issues and conversations my entire life,” Ulrich said. “I want to do work that inspires conversation. It’s powerful for me. That’s why I went into theatre.”

The ongoing heated conversation between these women envelops the play in language and perspective.

“It’s so important to listen to this play,” McCain said. “There is no grey area for both of them.

They’re both so invested in their belief systems.

They both have important things to say and they don’t listen to each other.

“I’ve had maybe three or four really challenging roles—this is among the top,” McClain said. “It is dense, layered and packed with so much. There’s been a lot of research, which is great for an actor.

I’m indebted to Scott [Palmer] for entrusting me with this. He’s really brilliant.”

This COF season has been dedicated to the idea of family. So how does this play between two very smart but ideologically disparate women come into that idea?

“It’s the family that we choose,” Palmer said.

are so similar to each other. It can be frustrating to realize how close they are, and if they could just listen, they could be family. But they’re defensive.

There’s a moment in the second act where they are close to understanding each other.”

Like life, we miss opportunities daily to be nicer to each other due to vanity, pride and a lack of empathy. The title is, in fact, scathing. Ultimately, there are no niceties.

“There’s an intersectionality about this,” Palmer said. “It’d be easy to say this is about race, but it’s not. It’s intergenerational. It’s gender, and different forms of feminism. So much of the time we know who the good guy and bad guy is. This is more complicated. The starting point is that conversation. What is a footnote, and what is appropriate? What is white supremacy, who gets to tell the history of America? Neither is right but neither is wrong, either.”

Kale Tales And Other Health Food Horrors

aste is a personal thing. Nutrition is universal. So, when you love a so-called “superfood,” but hear a lot of folks degrade it as “super gross,” a sense of responsibility might kick in.

Let’s get one thing straight first. Doctors and nutritionists agree: There’s no such thing as a superfood. It’s a marketing term, but it does fairly describe certain proteins, vegetables, fruits, legumes, spices and even dairy products that are densely packed with beneficial nutrients. So, if the following suggestions on how to cook three of the most controversial veggies doesn’t sway your taste buds, don’t fret. The world of whole food has plenty of options for you.

Kale The late chef and food critic Anthony Bourdain hated kale. So you’re not a Philistine if you don’t like this leafy green. But your frame of reference may be limited to kale chips, kale shakes, and things that make you say “kale, no.”

Try roasting your kale instead. It’s extremely easy to pull off. Rub some coconut oil (since we’re being super healthy) over a glass baking dish, toss in some kale that’s been chopped into bite-size pieces, drizzle the leaves with olive oil, and season it with salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. Then, put it the oven at 400 degrees or so, for about 10 minutes. Serve the result with any protein and let the juices of that meat meet the kale.

If the thick stems and curly leaves of certain types

of kale are something your texture-sensitive palate just can’t get past, then try the type of kale called Lacinato, also known as Tuscan, dinosaur or elephant kale. It’s darker green and softer.

Another tasty option is to make a Caesar salad dressing and toss that over your kale—cooked as described above—and topped with fresh parmesan cheese.

Brussels Sprouts Cultivated in Brussels, Belgium, in the 1600s, these mini cabbages … OK, they smell like a fart. So it’s no wonder why you disliked them since childhood. But they don’t taste like farts if you cook them a little differently.

Avoid the boiling or microwaving technique and put them in that baking dish described above for kale. Also, cut them in half if they are large so the sort of cabbage taste is not overwhelming and a little more subtle. Also consider these three additions to the salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder you should add: ● Soy sauce and fresh lemon juice ● Chili garlic sauce ● Truffle oil Cucumbers Waxy on the outside, seedy and watery on the inside.

What’s not to like?!

The quickest way to turn a cucumber hater into a cucumber fan is to either peel off the waxy outside or start using only so-called English cucumbers—those longer ones, which have a much thinner skin. Another way to turn a cucumber hater is to slice the cucumber ultra thin. A handy device called a mandoline (not the musical

THE “WEEKLY” FISHING REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 19 - 25 FROM PICABO ANGLER

D

o your snow dance! Our local snowpack levels leave a bit to be desired at the moment; the Big Wood River basin is currently at 80 percent, the Little Wood is at 61 percent, and the Big Lost is at 70 percent. The lone bright spot for our region is the Salmon River basin, currently at 106 percent.

While we do have good base flows on area rivers, a healthy water table, and relatively full reservoirs, we do need additional high-mountain snow to boost snowpack levels and ensure excellent summer flows on local waters.

Area fisheries have been productive under the right conditions. On Silver Creek, the midge activity has really picked up in the last week. On select afternoons, plenty of midges have been hatching throughout the portion of Silver Creek that remains open to fishing. Long, light leaders and delicate presentations are required to fool these midging trout; 12-foot to 15-foot leaders tapered to 6X or 6.5X are the norm. Trailing-shuck midges, tie-down midges, Griffith’s Gnats and Fripple midges have all been effective patterns (size 18-22).

There’s a bit of color to the Creek, so streamer fishing should continue to produce.

Sparkle Minnows, Zonkers, Clouser Minnows, and other baitfish imitations are very effective, as are small, dark leeches and buggers. If you decide to get in the float tube and fish Kilpatrick Pond, dress warm and don’t overdo it!

Midge fishing is good on the Big Wood River, as well. Look for foam lines and back eddies and you will find the rising trout.

Standard midge imitations, along with a tiny zebra midge dropper, are the way to go.

Nymphing and streamer fishing continue to produce. While tried-and-true patterns are always effective (Copper Johns, Prince Nymphs, Rubber Legs, etc.), don’t be afraid to show the fish something a little different!

If you’re looking to take a drive, both the Lower Big Lost River and South Fork Boise River have been productive lately under the right conditions.

Again, midges, nymphs and streamers are all producing at times.

While February is the shortest month of the year, sometimes it certainly feels like the longest!

In addition to the local fishing opportunities, now is a good time to take a look at your gear and do any maintenance or replacement that’s needed.

Keep your fingers crossed for a little more snow and, as always, be safe out there.

Introducing New Dogs

any people these days have or will have multiple-dog households. In addition, we meet other dogs along the trails all the time. This means that our dogs must learn how to meet and greet appropriately, with the outcome being healthy relationships. Having said that, I also believe, strongly, that many dogs are not social and do not want relationships with other dogs. When we find we have a dog that does not like other dogs, it is our job in all fairness to not push those relationships on them.

The idea that “just let them work it out” is actually very unfair to the dogs. Many dogs that could be fearful, over-friendly, dominant or bullies will not work it out fairly or in a healthy manner. In those cases, letting them work it out for themselves is an open door to disaster.

Many people don’t recognize the signs that a disaster is about to happen. Why? Because we are not dogs. Dogs speak to each other so quickly and in a different language, it can be hard even for a dog behavior expert to catch all the communication between two dogs!!!!

As a certified dog behavior consultant, I watch and live with dog behavior full time, even in my home. Still, I can and do miss the dog spoken language; it is not easy to see and interpret accurately.

There is huge pressure for our dogs to get along in today’s environment because almost everyone has one or more dogs and they are all out in public areas. Just like people, some dogs are New York City dogs that love being with lots and lots of dogs. Other people and dogs are country dwellers that would rather

have the peace of solitude, going into a small town only once in a while.

When we leave dogs to their own devices about meeting new dogs, things can become very dicey.

What is the solution? In my home, dogs are introduced slowly. I let them build trust with each other. If a new dog comes into my home, that dog is placed in an exercise pen in the living room so it can sniff and see the other dogs safely. I may actually do this for a couple of days. It depends on the comfort I see. I also have an exercise pen outside for the new dog to be safe in until it can see and experience the dog dynamics safely. Very rarely do I ever just put the dogs in together and let them “work it out.”

However, an exercise pen is not a possibility for dogs that are loose on the trail. One of the best things you can do in that situation is to just keep walking. If you stop and let the dogs sniff, that is when a conflict can arise.

If you keep going, and reward your dog frequently for coming along with you, no matter what, it takes the pressure off both dogs so they can feel safer and avoid conflict.

In the world of dog behavior, there is no 100 percent way to do anything. Each dog is individual and must be treated as such. Some dogs need more leadership to feel safe. Other dogs may need more leadership so they are not the ones making decisions. And some dogs are, indeed, really easy about being with other dogs. Knowing your dog and being intentional and having a plan ahead of time about dog-to-dog greeting is essential.

The more dogs there are, the more the chance of conflict, fights and injury. Dog-to-

Sidestepping Winter

e humans have it pretty easy when it comes to winter. Folks may complain about the cold or about shoveling snow out of the driveway, but it’s worth taking a moment to consider how much we’ve accomplished as far as expanding our range from warmer regions (from where we originated) into all corners of the planet (including the cold corners) throughout the course of our species’ story.

Our success is written in the physical traits that evolution has given us. We have dexterous hands that allow us to use tools and to build things such as woven clothing, insulated shelters, reliable sources of warmth (from open fires to baseboard heaters and natural gas furnaces and everything in between), and snowplows that make our travels easier.

We also have large brains that allow us to plan and create and wield complex systems such as industrial-scale agriculture, municipal electrical grids, and the engineering of roads to cross mountain passes. All nice things when it comes to surviving winter.

But, probably the most significant invention as far as winter is concerned is the access to food: we’ve used our brains (and our hands) to ensure that we have access to plenty of calories right in our cupboards, even though the fact that winter shuts down most photosynthesis means that very little food is actually being grown anywhere near us.

In this way, we’ve largely sidestepped one of the most fundamental problems of winter for other species: the lack of available food.

The banana that I ate for breakfast, on a cold morning in February in Idaho, was grown far away from here, in a place with more summery weather. We have freed ourselves, to a large degree, from the seasonal starvation that most other species endure at this time of year.

And, so. Why is all of this on my mind this morning? Because, while eating my banana,

I saw a single chickadee flitting about from tree branch to tree branch, feeding, outside my window. The bird was chirping away as it fed, and it looked for all the world to be going about its business in a controlled and organized way.

Chickadees in winter boggle my mind. I just cannot square, in my head, how it is that they survive winter. Such a small creature, and so vulnerable to the cold, these birds have to find and eat an enormous amount of food to survive each day and each night (let alone the entire winter). Somehow, they seem to figure it out.

And then there’s the elk, which we all see from time to time, down in the valley or on

the local south-facing slopes during winter.

Wallowing in the snow and scraping together a few calories from some dead grasses beneath the snow seems, compared to me eating an imported banana, like a heroic feat.

It makes me feel a bit spoiled. And it sure makes me feel like shoveling some snow is a small price to pay for our rather luxurious and privileged place in the winter world.

hen you walk into Oak Street Foods, time seems to slow down a bit. There are several reasons for that.

First, there’s the food. Yes, you’ll find in the display case more exotic, gourmet dishes. But it’s going to be sitting next to some comfort food and something super-healthy, too. It’s how our moms and grandmas and favorite aunt cooked for us, or at least how they wanted us to eat.

Then there’s the décor. It’s Americana meets Bellevue history. It’s the way our moms and grandmas and favorite aunt decorated their kitchens and dining rooms.

Finally, there’s Vicky Walker, the owner and operator and chef and server of Oak Street Foods.

At first glance, you can see her inner feisty. And every other glance thereafter is nothing but charming and sweet. It’s the way our moms and grandmas and favorite aunt seemed to be.

What follows is a brief Q&A session with, who some folks affectionately call, Miss Vicky.

And what should follow after that is you going to lunch there some Tuesday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at 109 Oak Street off Main. You won’t regret taking a deep breath and letting time slow down for a while.

Six questions for Vicky: WRW: Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in the Valley?

VW: I’m originally from the San Francisco Bay area but my parents moved the family out here back in 1971. My stepdad, Sam Hazard, was the original founder of the Sun Valley Community School. People called it Sam’s School back then.

WRW: How long have you owned and operated Oak Street?

VW: It will be 16 years this April. I’ve pretty much worked in restaurants my whole life. I was the kitchen manager at Cristina’s in Ketchum for about 12 years, developing menus, working the line, ordering product, you name it. But after spending so much of my life in the business I just needed a time out. Even when I was in school I was working in restaurants as a server, so I just kind of burned out. Then, when this spot opened up just down the street from where we live, my husband and I bit the bullet, picked up a hammer and saw, and refurbished the place to what you see now.

WRW: If you could be known for only one dish/recipe, which one would it be?

VW: Soup. Any soup. There’s just something about it that makes it the perfect comfort food. I

have a funny story about it. My real father is Armenian and his last name was Chorbajian. When I told him I was opening a restaurant and would make a lot of soups all the time, he laughed. It turns out that our last name in Armenian mean “soup maker.” So I feel like it’s in my destiny to make a lot of soups.

WRW: Your store hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tuesday through Friday, but when do you actually start and end your work day?

VW: It’s a long day. I’m here all day on Mondays. That’s my prep day. I get all the dressings and soups ready. I chop all the vegetables. I start putting together whatever is on the menu that week. On the days I’m open, I sometimes get here as early as 6 a.m. Some days I leave just after 3:30 p.m. but sometimes I’m here until almost 6 p.m.

Good thing I just live down the street.

WRW: How do you spend your off days?

VW: My husband and I like golf. We fish. We camp. We hike our dog (a golden retriever named Kai). And we do local traveling. We get around the state a lot.

WRW: Where do you like to eat when you eat out?

VW: That’s a good question! We don’t eat out much. But we enjoy La Cabañita for Mexican food. We love Rickshaw when we’re craving Asian food. Black Owl is great to get something simple for breakfast and to have their wonderful coffee. I guess when we want to get fancy we go to (The Grill at) Knob Hill. We’ve only been a few times, but we really enjoyed what they do.

Laughter

am enjoying this theme of laughter, so I think we shall continue.

Several years ago, I was at a spiritual seminar in Colorado, with Kryon, for those of you familiar with his teachings. It was called “A Journey Home Retreat.”

At this seminar was an Emergency Room doctor from Southern California. His name was Chabula Malamba. Isn’t that a wonderful name? It just rolls off the tongue with such music.

Well, Chabula was truly magical. His laughter rolled up from the depth of his being. When Chabula laughed, everyone laughed. You could not help yourself. He told us he had no control over the laughter. It certainly could not be faked. Needless to say, we all wanted Chabula to laugh as much as possible.

The last event of the seminar we all had to wear white. Now, Chabula was not a small man and he came in wearing the most beautiful pair of hand-painted white palazzo pants you have ever

seen. I loved those pants and asked him where he got them. It was not something I could buy online. He looked at a Native American bone bracelet I was wearing and said his wife would really like that. I asked him, “You want to trade?” He said sure, but the pants would be too big for me. I replied, “No problem. I know how to sew.”

He went up to his room and changed clothes, bringing me the pants. I gave him the bracelet. To this day I still wear the pants and they fill me with the memory of Chabula’s laughter.

Have you ever experienced laughter so genuine that it transforms you physically, emotionally and mentally? Let’s all make a pact to create that kind of laughter in our world. Let’s give that to each other!

Thank you, Chabula, for your incredible gift. Just repeat the magic words “Chabula Malamba,” “Chabula Malamba” and feel the laughter of a magic genie filling your soul. I know you can do this.

Rising to the top

ising to the top is all about drive. And Will Penrose has been making that his goal for as long as he can recall. The four-year Wood River High School soccer goalie and two-year track and field athlete hasn’t let his ACL injury stop him from the competitiveness he enjoys. Instead, he transitioned into golf and tennis, and has volunteer coached a U10 soccer team since he was in the 10th grade.

“I enjoy the team bonding and the friendships created in all these sports,” Penrose said. “But the competitive nature and the drive to be the best is truly the most fulfilling aspect of all these athletics.”

Penrose was born in China and adopted by Mike and Nancy Penrose when he was 5 years old. He has lived in the Valley since 2007 and has a deep appreciation for “the relationship between nature and community” here.

“What I’m going to miss though, as I leave, are the friendships and the memories made, but I’m excited to create new ones and reflect on the old ones,” said Penrose, who plans to attend either Western Washington University or the University of Oregon.

He’ll go there with goals.

“My lifelong goal is to get a degree in marine biology, work out in the field making new discoveries, and from there I’m not quite sure.

Hopefully, expand my passion for photography and possibly get a Ph.D. in biology,” Penrose said.

And he’ll go there prepared.

“I am taking A.P. Government, A.P. Physics, A.P. Biology and A.P. Calculus,” Penrose said.

His GPA is 4.0.

“There are many things I’d like to change about the world, but if I had to focus on just one thing, I’d like to make it more renewable— fight climate change and be one of the dutiful curators of this planet, as we should be,” Penrose said.

In the meantime, Penrose appreciates who he is and what he has become. He takes pride in his 71-year-old dad—Mike—a retired pilot who can be found skiing and biking around the Valley; his mom, Nancy, who is a physical therapist at St. Luke’s; and his sister, Niki, who recently graduated from Arizona State University and is now back in the Valley working on her EMD license as part of her effort to becoming a member of the ski patrol.

“In a community mostly made up of a Latino and Caucasian demographic, I think my ethnicity, Chinese, has brought an interesting perspective to who I’ve become,” Penrose observed. “It’s being different that defines individuals and I feel like I’ve been blessed to be quite literally different in many aspects.”

It’s All About The Kids Kiwanis quietly helps community

he local chapter of the Kiwanis club has a simple and inspiring mission: Improve the lives of kids in our community. They do so in a variety of ways and welcome your help.

“It feels good to do good,” said Bob Wiederrick.

Bob is the current president of Hailey Kiwanis and he is one of those under-the-radar local heroes who help make our community so special. A welder by trade, Bob made the bike sculpture in front of Sturtos on Main Street in Hailey, created the kachina-style sun at Friedman Memorial Airport, and the longboard bench on the bike path near Fox Acres Road, to honor his late son.

Bob has been a member of Kiwanis International for nearly a decade now, and he explained the impressive list of accomplishments the club has quietly accomplished.

Their most visible achievements include rebuilding a half-dozen local park play structures.

They began in 2014 by replacing the equipment in Deerfield Park. Their latest success was installing a playground at Keefer Park in Woodside and erecting the pavilion at what was formerly known as Balmoral Park. The Hailey City Council was so impressed with the club’s efforts over the years that last fall they renamed the Woodside park after the Kiwanis club.

The parks are just part of the good Kiwanis is doing. They have also donated over 1,000 new coats to kids in need over the past five years.

They sponsor local sports teams, support traveling youth programs and student performances, and have even donated diapers to The Advocates.

They also team up with other local nonprofits like the Papoose Club and the Wood River Women’s Foundation to support worthy causes.

“It’s really rewarding to make these things happen,” Bob said. “We’re not good at self-promotion, but we want more people to know what we’re doing so that more people will get involved and help us do even more good things for our community.”

Kiwanis is open to anyone interested in making a difference. Founded by businessmen in Michigan in 1915, the organization now has a diverse

“Kiwanis is a great club for people who want to be around other people who want to make positive impacts for our community and our youth,” Bob said.
