alley voters will yea or nay more than $18 million of bond expenditures when they take to the polls in November. That’s the highlight of the final ballot posted by Blaine County election clerk Hayleigh Simpson last week. Also of note, the ballot will have two contested mayoral races—one in Ketchum and one in Carey—and across the board contested councilmember races in Hailey.

Election Day is Nov. 2 and polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For information about registering to vote, voting requirements, and early and absentee ballot voting, please see the information at the end of this article.

At issue in Hailey is whether the city shall sell $950,000 of bonds to partially reimburse itself for the purchase of property at 116 S. River Street, the site of the so-called Heart of Hailey—the city’s future expansion of the town square. The total amount to be repaid over the life of the bonds is $1,044,400, after figuring in interest. The estimated average annual cost to the taxpayer on the proposed bonds is a tax of $21 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value, per year, based on current conditions.

The other bond measure is being put on the ballot by Wood River Fire District for the construction of a new $17 million fire station, renovation of existing facilities, and other related equipment additions and improvements. The anticipated interest rate on the proposed bonds is 2.74% per year, pushing the total amount to be repaid over the life of the bonds to more than $24 million. A property tax of $72.60 per $100,000 of property value will cover that cost.

In Ketchum, Mayor Neil Bradshaw will seek another term at the city’s helm. He is being challenged by Perry Boyle, Spencer Cordovano, and David Barovetto. In Carey, Mayor Randall Patterson will be challenged by Sara Mecham. And in Hailey, city council seats 1 and 2—held

by Heidi Husbands and Kaz Thea, respectively—are both being challenged. Tom DeAntonio and Jane Drussel are challenging Husbands. Kris Wirth is challenging Thea.

GoFundMe campaign passes $22,000 as workman’s comp claim is denied

he longtime, beloved Blaine County animal control officer who suffered life-threatening injuries when he fell down a flight of steps while on duty is showing signs of improvement. How he’s going to pay for the costs of his care and recovery, however, is not.

Paul Ramm is a 15-year veteran of the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office where he served as the sole animal control officer, among many other duties he willingly performed for the organization over the years. On Aug. 17, while on duty, he stopped to use the restroom at a friend’s home. Upon leaving, he fell down a flight of stairs, suffering multiple brain bleeds, skull fractures on the left side, and a nicked carotid artery before he was placed on life-support ventilation. According to his daughter, Janell Porter, workman’s compensation insurance says Ramm’s accident does not qualify for coverage since he was not performing a specific work duty.

For Porter, the matter is clear—her dad was on duty and radioed into dispatch with his location and that he was taking a quick break.

“He never signed out of service. Workers are allowed to take 10-minute breaks every few hours,” Porter said. “He was on duty.”

Porter said the family wants to appeal the decision and they are currently working with the sheriff’s office and an independent resource that advocates for first responders in matters like this.

Meanwhile, Porter and the rest of Ramm’s immediate family are preparing now for both health and financial worst-case scenarios. Medical Update Ramm’s condition is grim, but improving “beyond expectations” of his doctors, said Porter, who is no stranger to the rigors of neurological recovery. For years, she had worked as a registered medical assistant and front desk lead for a neurology specialist in the Valley and currently she works for St. Luke’s as a patient access specialist. In other words, she’s hopeful for her dad, but she’s managing her expectations.

Regarding her father’s brain injury prognosis, Porter noted the following: ● Most patients show 80% of their overall improvement in the first 30 days ● Most patients show the remaining 20% of their overall improvement over the next year ● Ramm’s respiratory distress has improved dramatically and his medical care team removed the ventilation machine and capped his tracheostomy (breathing tube) ● Ramm is showing slow motor-skill improvements every day ● Ramm is opening his eyes more often but still isn’t completely tracking movement ● It is not uncommon for patients with Ramm’s injuries to also suffer rapid declines in improvement

Managed Chaos As reported in the Sept. 8 issue of Wood River Weekly, Ramm’s family had been thrown into chaos after learning of his fall. Porter was staying in Boise with her mother in a motorhome parked in Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center’s RV lot. Porter and her brother, Justin Ramm, would then travel back and forth between the Wood River and Treasure valleys so that one of the kids was with their parents at all times.

Since then, Porter said, St. Luke’s has provided work-from-home accommodations for her, and her mother has signed over power of attorney to make various authorizations easier.

As for Blaine County Sheriff’s Office, Ramm’s duties, according to Porter, are being spread out amongst the Sheriff’s Office, Hailey Police, and other coordinating agencies, or just not done at all.

“My dad was an animal control officer but he was a jack of all trades, too,” Porter said. “He was even managing all of the vehicle maintenance there. He has always been that kind of generous, helpful person.”

f it takes a village to raise a child into a well-adjusted and productive adult, folks in Carey only need to look at Adolfo Andazola’s current status in life to know the rural community really stepped up. This month, the Mexican-born Carey School alum took the first step toward becoming a medical doctor—he got accepted into the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Add up all the challenges the 2015 Carey School graduate faced in his 24 years of life and the result should not be “doctor to be.” Andazola was born in Mexico to a mother and father who were both ag industry workers. By the time he turned 10, his parents began his immigration process into the U.S., but specifically to Carey, where his father was working for a local cattle ranch.

And in 2008, at the age of 11 and with no English language skills nor friends in the States, he started sixth grade at Carey School.

“It was rough, to be perfectly honest,” Andazola said. “But the school was so supportive. I had an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher and at first we focused on learning English.

Then it moved toward learning other subjects but in an ESL environment. And, finally, after a while, I started attending regular classes in all subjects in English.”

Andazola left out the best part. He ultimately earned the admiration of his teachers and peers for his relentless work ethic and would go on to become class salutatorian and student body president by the time he graduated high school. After high school, he attended Idaho State University, where he double majored in medical laboratory science and Spanish for the health professions.

He was named ISU’s Undergraduate Student of the Year in 2018.

The perseverance he learned as a young student was on full display after he graduated with his bachelor’s degree. Andazola applied to 22 different medical schools before getting accepted into the University of Washington program. He now attends the medical school at its University of Idaho location in Moscow.

It’s a serendipitous match for both Andazola and regional healthcare, thanks to the shortage of Spanish-speaking rural healthcare providers in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Washington and Alaska. Specifically, Andazola is taking part in a program called TRUST (Targeted Rural Underserved Track), which will have him practicing mainly family medicine in underserved populations, including the Latinx community.

Incidentally, St. Luke’s Health System established a $500,000 scholarship endowment this week that supports Idaho medical school students interested in pursuing careers caring for rural and underserved populations.

“All I can say to other students pursuing their dream in the medical field is to accept your failures, take them with humility and learn from them. But most importantly, never quit on your goals, regardless of how long it takes. The only way to lose a fight is to quit,” Andazola observed.

Andazola now has the challenge of the rigors of medical school which for every hour inside the classroom requires an equal and opposite hour of study outside the classroom.

“If the lecture is four hours, you need to do self-learning for about four hours beforehand. Otherwise the material won’t make much sense,” Andazola explained.

After two years of foundational study, Andazola will then spend another two years in rotations—assigned shifts at an approved healthcare site in a particular field of medicine. After that, assuming he garners his medical doctorate, he can seek a residency, which is a fancy way of saying he will be a doctor-in-training for typically another four years.

“Immigrating to a rural community really lets you see firsthand the barriers to health care.

Getting the rural communities access to not just health care but preventive care has always been my ultimate goal,” Andazola said. “I feel fortunate I can be in a position one day to help.”

School Board To Meet Virtually Until COVID-19 Risk Hits ‘Moderate’

The Blaine County School District Board of Trustees will hold all upcoming board meetings and work sessions virtually until the spread of COVID-19 in the area subsides.

The board has made the decision based on a recent surge in Delta variant cases in Blaine County and throughout Idaho.

So far this school year, the district has experienced 30 cases, while the county overall has seen large numbers of breakthrough cases affecting those who are vaccinated.

The South Central Public Health District has placed Blaine County in its “Critical Risk” category for the past several weeks. The BCSD board plans to continue meeting virtually until this level is downgraded to “Moderate.”

“In my view, putting all trustees and key district administrative staff in a closed room with various members of the public present would not be the responsible thing to do, given the current status of COVID-19 in our area,” said Keith Roark, board chair. “Based on the COVID-19 numbers we are seeing in our district and Blaine County overall, we believe it is in the best interest of our board, district staff and our community to return to virtual meetings for the time being.”

Once public meetings return, the board will continue to require all attendees—including trustees and district staff—to wear masks at all times while indoors. Mr. Roark will present a resolution related to masks at meetings during the board’s Oct. 14 meeting.

St. Luke’s Leads Prominent Research Trial

In an effort to inform suicide prevention efforts in healthcare, St. Luke’s is restarting a three-year, $3.4 million research study put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Suicide Prevention Among Recipients of Care (SPARC) trial will be the largest-ever suicide prevention study in Idaho and will help fill gaps in what experts know about how to help people experiencing suicidal thoughts.

The study is among the first that focuses on residents of both rural and urban settings and is the first large-scale clinical trial of suicide prevention in the Intermountain West region. The SPARC trial will also include a large adolescent population, which is novel in suicide prevention research.

The SPARC trial compares two evidence-based follow-up interventions to prevent suicide ideation and behavior in adults and adolescents. Healthcare providers and staff from 32 SLHS primary care clinic and emergency department sites across the state are partnering with the SPARC research team to enroll nearly 1,400 patients—approximately 600 adolescents and 800 adults. People who choose to participate in the study will be randomized to receive one of the two evidence-based follow-up interventions from the Idaho Suicide Prevention Hotline.

Suicide is a significant public health issue in Idaho and suicide prevention continues to be a top priority within St. Luke’s Health System. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in Idaho for those aged 10–44. Idaho’s suicide rate is 46% higher than the national suicide rate, according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and Idaho consistently has one of the highest suicide rates in the country.

At St. Luke’s Health System, approximately 1,165 patients screened at an elevated risk for suicide in emergency departments and primary care clinics in August 2021. The Idaho Suicide Prevention Hotline responded to a record 1,657 contacts from help-seekers during that same timeframe.

Mask Mandates Hit (Most Of) Valley

With the exception of Bellevue, all Valley jurisdictions that have reintroduced mask mandate measures in recent days have reinstated those rules aimed at mitigating COVID-19. Sun Valley, Ketchum, Hailey and Blaine County have all reintroduced emergency health orders. For the most part, the orders list a number of exemptions for young children, law enforcement, those with hearing impairments, and—so long as they are socially distanced—anyone eating, drinking or exercising inside.

The measures took center stage in recent days after an uptick in COVID-19 cases statewide has triggered medical care rationing in Idaho. Health officials say the uptick is largely due to the so-called delta variant—an even more highly contagious form of the novel coronavirus—and the number of people eligible for vaccination that remain unvaccinated.

St. Luke’s Health System is establishing a scholarship endowment that supports Idaho medical school students interested in pursuing careers caring for rural and underserved populations.

“The St. Luke’s endowment helps Idaho WWAMI medical students earn their M.D. and benefits the state by supporting the physician pipeline,” said Jeff Seegmiller, director of WWAMI at the University of Idaho. “Our medical students are Idahoans, train in clinical settings across Idaho and many of them intend to practice in Idaho. To keep these bright and talented future physicians at home, offsetting their medical school debt is critical.”

The WWAMI Medical Education Program is a multi-state partnership between the top-ranked primary care medical school, the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM), and Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI).

Idaho WWAMI students are Idaho residents and spend the first two years of medical school at the University of Idaho, followed by two years of clinical training; most of their required clinical rotations can be completed in 13 communities across the Gem State.

St. Luke’s pledge of $500,000 to the University of Idaho Foundation will create the endowment. Scholarships will be awarded to full-time Idaho WWAMI students who demonstrate financial need and academic achievement. Preference will be given to students who are participating in the Targeted Rural and Underserved Track (TRUST) program.

‘Blinking Light’ Sees Multi-Vehicle Crash

On Friday, Sept. 10, at approximately 4:36 p.m., Blaine County Sheriff deputies responded to the intersection of State Highway 75 and U.S Highway 20 for a multi-vehicle crash with ejection, south of Bellevue.

Crash scene investigation determined that Milton Paul Blackburn, age 45, of Nampa, was traveling west on Highway 20 in a 2007 black Honda Pilot with a juvenile female passenger. Blackburn stopped at the junction of State Highway 75, then proceeded into the intersection. The Pilot impacted the rear driver’s quarter panel of a 2005 green Chevrolet Silverado driven by Benjamin Gomez, age 62, of Hailey, with passenger Alma Carrillo-Gomez, age 54, also of Hailey, as the Silverado was traveling southbound through the intersection.

The impact of the collision caused the Silverado to spin, cross the centerline, and impact the driver’s side front end of a 2011 white Ford Taurus traveling northbound, driven by Sean Kent Seely, age 34, of Gannett, with a female juvenile passenger. While spinning, the passenger door of the Silverado broke open, ejecting Alma Carrillo-Gomez into the roadway. The Silverado continued to spin, impacting a 2019 grey Chevrolet Blazer also traveling northbound, driven by Kenneth Elliot Schultz, age 75, of Castle Pines, Colo., with passenger Deborah Frances Schultz, age 70, of Aurora, Colo.

All four vehicles received substantial damage and were towed from the scene. All of the occupants were wearing seatbelts except for Benjamin Gomez. Alma Carrillo-Gomez and Benjamin Gomez were transported to Wood River Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Milton Blackburn was cited for Failure to Yield, I.C. 49-807(2).

Are Abortion Laws Anti-Male?

A

bortion. It’s not pretty. No one likes abortion. But rather than blame men for impregnating women, I want to explain things to them. These new abortion laws around the country and possibly coming to Idaho soon are anti-male.

According to one U.S.-based research organization, the abortion rate in countries that prohibit abortion is 37 per 1,000 people. In countries that permit abortion, it’s 34 per 1,000. That difference is not “statistically significant” but it’ll mean something to your pocketbook because you know who’s gonna have to foot their welfare bill once they make it out of the womb. You and me!

The Gipper made it real clear: “Government is not the solution to a problem. Government is the problem.” Abortion laws are the perfect example of well-intended rule making. You see, most women have had a late period for reasons other than pregnancy. They happen once a month, but they can be flakey. Periods can be late. Periods can skip a month. Periods can change for women when they live with other women. Periods can be not periods at all, but actually miscarriages. I mean, it’s like witchcraft down there. They need to talk to doctors about this stuff. But laws like the one in Texas can keep your lady from going to see the doc. Who wants to have to prove they had a miscarriage and not an abortion?

One other reason for a late period is an STD. Gross. Now women aren’t going to get checked out for that yuck, which means if some skank sleeps with a man, he might get an STD, too. Or even pass it on to his wife!

I know that’s what guns are for, but you still can’t take your gals to the doctor under these laws. That’s because they’ll do a followup appointment six weeks later, and if Thug Jr. or Lil’ Creeper shows up with a beating heart in some sonogram… Well, let’s just say,”Cigars, anyone?!” Oh right, the snowflakes canceled those, too.

And just think now about all those lazy folks on welfare looking for a handout while there’s this whole $10,000 prize for reporting folks. I mean, say you and your wife are preparing for the miracle of life and you go around telling the whole town because you can’t wait to be a daddy. But then your wife has a miscarriage. That’s an easy $10k for any lawyer who can wrangle up a group of liars to say it wasn’t a miscarriage in court.

Some of what you just read might sound hyperbolic at worst and humorous at best, but they are actual potential impacts of, for sake of argument, a well-meaning law by well-meaning folks. And that’s something politicians and the media shouldn’t put a mask over.

NO BONES ABOUT IT THE “WEEKLY” FISHING REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 22 - OCTOBER 5 FROM PICABO ANGLER

F

all bugs are here and these hatches are getting stronger by the day. Cooler nighttime temperatures are pushing the starting times back quite a bit. There is no need to be on the water before 9:00 a.m. The fishing picks up throughout the day and peaks with the afternoon heat. Anglers will continue to find good action until sunset.

Silver Creek is seeing the first good hatches of the Mahogany Dun in the middle of the day.

This is a favorite of the fish and a hatch that seems to make the fish lose all the weariness they develop throughout the summer months. Generally, the Mahogany Dun is accompanied by big Fall Baetis hatches. The fish will switch back and forth between the two hatches, so be sure the fish you are targeting are eating the bug representing the correct hatch. Be willing to switch back and forth because the fish certainly are. The October Caddis is the other big hatch on the Creek right now. This hatch normally occurs at night, but the best fishing activity is in the early evening up until sunset.

The Big Wood is super low and clear and, in many instances, acts like Silver Creek. Use those Silver Creek techniques on the Wood right now and you’ll catch more fish. A low profile, a slow approach to the water and a keen eye will make a big difference. The Fall Baetis and Western Red Quill are showing up in the heat of the day and will bring most fish to the surface.

This is still a good time to fish the Rusty Spinner to rising fish as well as the Gulper Special.

The upper Lost is fishing much like the Big Wood. Low water means a slightly more technical fishery, but there are also a lot fewer anglers fishing here right now. If you go, Ants are a great fly. You will see Western Red Quills on this river as well. If things get tough, search the deepest pools with Streamers.

The lower Lost River is seeing a few anglers and the low flows have made this a spotty fishery, but anglers can find some fish in the riffles and the heads of the deeper pools. The more we move into the fall the more you will want to pay attention to the slicks and flats at the tails of the pools.

hen we get into trouble with our dog, many people head to the Internet to get information. As the information superhighway, there is so much out there to gather!

What becomes difficult for most people if they search diligently is that they will find conflicting information. Some information will suggest you never say “NO” to your dog, never raise your voice, never do this or do that, or that there is only one way to train.

A truly gifted dog-training instructor will have many “tools” in their toolbox. They will have experience in prescribing what will be effective for YOUR dog and for you. No two dogs are alike, nor are their owners. Everyone has different needs, and every dog learns differently. Some dogs are extremely independent, as many of the terrier and livestock guardian groups of dogs are. Some dogs are very sensitive by nature, such as the hunting breeds, but at the same time, once their nose is engaged, they no longer have any emotional sensitivity. Many dogs have no interest in food. And, many dogs have more interest in chasing objects than in eating food, which can make food training almost impossible.

The information you find on the Internet is always generalized. Unless you are face to face with an experienced instructor that has worked with hundreds of breeds and has experience with ALL training methodologies, choosing training information off the Internet can be a hit-or-miss proposition. It may or may not fit your dog and you. It is virtually impossible for anyone to prescribe what to do for a specific problem unless they know more about what your home life is like and what your individual dog is like. In short,

if anyone that professes that one particular training technique is better than another or is the ONLY way to train, they are not taking into consideration YOUR individual dog and YOUR circumstances.

I was reading a very well-known publication a few years ago that was giving advice about what to look for in a good puppy trainer. Without exception, the article said to never use a trainer that raised their voice. Now, seriously, have you ever seen one dog “raise their voice” at another dog in order to stop an unacceptable behavior? Of course, we all have! Older dogs may growl or bark firmly, even with intimidation, to tell a youngster her behavior is out of line. Is raising your voice always acceptable? No, but if it does let a puppy know they shouldn’t jump on the coffee table and grab a cheese knife that might cut them, is this a bad solution? It depends on the dog. Some puppies are very sensitive to a firm voice. Others couldn’t care less. If it is an effective consequence and does not abuse the dog, why don’t we use it? The point is not whether the use of a firm or raised voice is right or wrong, it is that to make a flat statement that a raised voice should never be used comes from someone who doesn’t understand natural dog behavior.

Checking the Internet is always a good source for ideas. But, when it comes to finding excellent solutions, a certified dog-training instructor is going to be able to give you the best information and solutions for YOU and YOUR individual dog. There are excellent certifying organizations out there. Look for organizations that do not require one method of training but rely on the professionalism of its members. The ones that are the most difficult to become members of are the ones I suggest. NADOI, the National Association

‘CANADIAN WOLF’ MAKES IT TO CALIFORNIA — SORT OF

two-year-old wolf named OR-93 crossed into Northern California on Jan. 30, 2020. He possessed a GPS collar courtesy of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and a yearning for immortality provided by his mix of roughly 20,000 genes. OR-93 was a disperser wolf who had left his natal pack near Mount Hood, Oregon, to find a mate. He chose south.

So far, OR-93 has taken a celibate path, for there are only one or two wolf packs in California and OR-93 blew by them southward on an odyssey through the nation’s most populous state. At least 16 counties and 1,000 miles later, his collar stopped working after April 5, 2021, when he was in San Luis Obispo County! Did OR-93’s gaze fall upon Spanish missions and the sun setting in the Pacific Ocean?

With a baleful future in this lonesome land, wolf OR-93 had fallen off the wolf watchers’ radar. He had by this time survived crossing Highway 99 and Interstate 5, countless barbed-wire fences and myriad hazards posed by 40 million people and 15 million vehicles.

But then he was detected one more time.

A camera trap videoed him on May 15 near a place called Wind Wolves Preserve, in southwestern Kern County, about 40 miles as the condor flies from Santa Barbara, or 30 miles from Bakersfield. Known for Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, forests of pumpjacks, miserable heat, and chronic problems with agricultural drainage and selenium, Kern County is a long way in every respect from OR-93’s Canadian roots.

The genes in OR-93’s deck are almost cer-

tainly linked to the 15 wolves that were captured in southwestern Alberta in December 1994 and then reintroduced near Corn Creek along the Salmon River, epicenter for Idaho rafting and kayaking. Or maybe his genes came from the 21 wolves captured in northeastern British Columbia and released at Dagger Falls, on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, in January 1996. Maybe OR-93 is from both these new Idaho populations, whose descendants first entered Oregon in 1999.

Some accusingly assert that the wolves we now have in Idaho are “Canadian wolves,” which is true; their recent ancestors came from two regions of western Canada (there may be a few non-transplanted wolves in the genetic mix that walked here on their own, also from Canada). But if OR-93 can lope from northern Oregon to the Tehachapi range in California in 18 months, taking his genes every step of the way, couldn’t his ancestors have done something similar, heading north, even?

But OR-93’s case is probably one for the record books. There have always been disperser wolves, youngsters desirous of establishing their own pack, or maybe tired of being thrashed by their more dominant pack mates.

Dispersers leave their natal pack and one of two things happen: they die (maybe they are killed by another wolf pack) or they succeed in finding a mate and try immortality by passing their genes on to their own litter. When OR-93 entered a vast wolfless landscape, he just kept going, running the country through his nose in search of a mate that he is unlikely to find.

In pre-European times before wolves had

been extirpated from all western states, disperser wolves like OR-93 didn’t have to travel as far before meeting their end or their mate.

The lucky and fitter individuals passed their genes generationally through the eons, ebbing and flowing in all directions suitable for the wolf niche. And now the genes in the wolves of British Columbia are the same genes of the wolves that once lived, and now live again, in the Northern Rockies. Wolf OR-93 and his kin in western North America are one species, Canis lupus.

he S&P 500 and Nasdaq hit record highs in August, further propelling an already hot stock market. Investors with cash on the sidelines or who want to make changes to their investment portfolio are left wondering when the U.S. stock market is due for a correction?

Historically, September has been a bad month for the markets. According to Yardeni Research, the S&P 500 posted on average declines of 1% during the month going back to 1928. After seven months straight of gains, what could derail the upward trajectory of the equity markets?

The resurgence of the COVID-19 delta variant has caused markets to become jittery. Investors are weighing whether an uptick in cases this fall could offset economic expansion. Is the economy stable enough to withstand prolonged months of flat or lower-than-expected job growth? Market uncertainty can create volatility, potentially offering investors buying opportunities.

INSPIRATIONS FROM MY HEART

T

he other day I was able to discuss an experience I had during my summer in India as a member of UCLA’s Project India (a Peace Corps model). It was so long ago that Nehru was prime minister and we traveled by prop plane. A diverse, multi-ethnic group, we spoke to thousands of Indian students as representative of rather typical college students. That trip was one of the most important times of my life, and it taught me many things: a passion for travel, often simple and involving volunteering; a willingness to be open-minded about other cultures; and an overwhelming sense of gratitude that I was able to have this experience.

One incident then most reflected my changing views about perceptions of reality. The visuals in this memory are etched as valid. Four of our seven teammates were invited to the home of the president of one of the colleges of the University of Calcutta. Decades later, I can still recall the shock when this articulate, Oxford-educated, charming and generous gentleman took us after our dinner to his “puja” room, a small, circular space with one door, a high ceiling and a window on the roof allowing some light other than that of the candles on the altar where he sat facing us. After several minutes with absolute quiet before his sonorous voice related his history and Hindu philosophy, he asked us to turn around to greet a visitor. We had not heard a door open, nor was there furniture one could find for concealment. There sat a compact Gandhi-like man attired in a dhoti. Our host told us that this man, his guru, had transmogrified in the past few minutes, moving his body from another part of In- JoEllen Collins—a longtime dia to be with us. The next time we turned toward the back resident of the Wood River Valley— is an Idaho Press wall, he was gone without a sound—pfft!

On the bus home, only the confirmed atheist said that he Club award-winning columnist, a teacher, writer, fabric saw no one. He insisted that we and the scholar were the only artist, choir member and human beings there. To this day, at reunions, we have talked unabashedly proud grandma about this incident. I swear that I saw that figure in the arc known as “Bibi Jo.” of the wall, and so does another of my teammates. The third has mixed recall.

I have studied how memory alters the truth of an event, especially with age and time. Occasionally, we remember things as we want them to have been. Contemporary friends might say that we had been drugged, hypnotized or, at the least, politely taught to honor that vision, to believe the spell-casting concepts we were encountering in such an exotic place, assuming that we were young and naïve and vulnerable to the kind of “magic realism” in a country and culture so distant from all we had known.

Whatever was the “truth” of those moments, I am convinced that our host believed fervently in that action of his guru, and I can accept fully that the cultural and religious beliefs of others are not necessarily wrong or should be dismissed because they are different from ours.

STEPPING OUT OF COVID CONSCIOUSNESS

emember, where your thoughts go, energy flows! We are constantly inundated with mandates, rules, reports, many of which are false, with an agenda of keeping us in fear and keeping us controlled. It takes a genius constantly researching to sort the truth from misinformation.

I am done with this type of thinking and behavior.

I had an amazing meditation while doing a joyous bike ride on Saturday. As I was riding, I was given a visual of a frequency band for COVID energy and I was told all I had to do was step up and out of that frequency. I just visually stepped up so that I was no longer in the vibration of COVID information. That felt so freeing and amazing.

With that in mind, I became aware of how much energy COVID is consuming for our whole planet. It is the dominant narrative. No wonder it has stuck around for so long. We are keeping it here with our focus and energy. It serves the agenda of those who want to keep us trapped, controlled and afraid.

When we are in fear, we are distracted from all that is going on. We quit thinking for ourselves and we become victims of the media. What if we all just stepped back and took all our energy from COVID? What if we did not worry about whether to mask or not or whether to vax or not vax.

What if we left it up to each person to decide what is best for their own mental and physical health and then stepped out of fear? What if we were not made into robots and mandated for everybody to do the same thing. I know many of you will be horrified at the suggestion of people determining their own wellbeing; however, fear is our greatest enemy and prolongs the narrative that is being given. Let’s stop using our physical, mental and emotional energy to continually think about the

disease, thus energizing its continued presence.

Take your energy back, trust your own immune system, natural immunity is more effective than vax immunity.

As long as we continue to give all of our attention to the presence of COVID, it will stay with us.

Change your focus, change the reality that is projected upon us. Eat well, take care of your body, think good thoughts, love yourself, embrace gratitude, exercise routinely. Choose to be healthy!

We can subtract our thoughts and focus from this COVID consciousness. It is a place to start and it can’t do any harm.

Where your focus goes, energy flows! Be considerate of those in fear, but hold the energy of health for them and for yourself; otherwise, we will experience variant after variant. Enough is enough. Step up, step out.

Blessings to all of those who face this energy every day. May you be guided to your perfect energy and stay healthy. May everyone involved make their own choices and then deal with the consequences of the choices their souls make.

Give up the excuse of stupidity about what to do.

Now is the time to educate yourself to find your truth. Don’t leave your life choices up to an outside authority. Earth is the planet of free choice.

PARTING WITH HIS SADDLES

I stood next to my aging father, of ninety-seven years. He looked around the saddle shop. His brown eyes shed some tears.

He said, “Today’s a dark one, but for you the sun will shine. For sure I ain’t no young one. Seems I’m runnin’ out of time.”

The saddles held a precious memory of my father’s life. Again, I felt as proud back when he gave me my first knife.

He reached, then gave a tug, and pulled away a dusty tarp. He knew the saddle’s history, and his mind was razor-sharp.

He pointed to a saddle. Said, “While fighting off at war. My father bought it for me, back in 1944.”

He said, “AIthough it ain’t horse worthy. It doesn’t seem quite fair. Cuz there oughtta be a use for this old saddle somewhere.”

He pulled another saddle. Said, “Remember my friend, Fred?

This was his favorite saddle. Now old Fred is long since dead.”

My father stretched, then slid the final saddle off the rack. A Heiser Denver saddle was the finest of the tack.

I don’t believe I’d ever seen this saddle in the shop. He said he’d used it years ago on a bucking saddle bronc.

A Heiser highback saddle right before my very eyes. My father showed excitement. It was more than just a prize.

And then his voice got louder in an old man’s sort of way. “I’d like it if you’d use it in your saddle shop display!”

So, I gave the saddles life and placed ’em on a pine tree log. Now my grandkids sit the saddles and it’s where they play leapfrog.

We both agreed, I’d put the saddles where the crowd would meet.

‘Cuz soon they’ll all become a brand-new barstool saddle seat.

OUR VOICE COUNTS With much anticipation, the Hispanic Heritage Festival arrived this year with a bang as families and friends reunited in Hailey on Saturday, Sept. 18, to celebrate their culture and others.

With activities for kids and entertainment for families throughout the day, it was amazing to see the scheduling play out so smoothly.

Even though I wasn’t able to attend in person, as I am currently studying at the University of Idaho, I was able to Facetime my mom to see the people of our community get down and enjoy a day of fun.

A day like this is so important to be able to reflect on how much we have grown in Blaine County and be able to feel proud of where we come from. Not only that, but cherish gathering with others who might not be aware of certain cultural differences that we portray in our everyday lives.

As Hispanic Heritage Month progresses, so do the events in Blaine County. This was just the beginning of fun, knowledge, entertainment and intimacy within our cultures and the community. Make sure to stay tuned on what’s next!

successful home sale, considered by many owners, is to maximize their proceeds in the shortest time with the least inconveniences. Just because it is a seller’s market doesn’t mean that homeowners can shortcut some of the steps that make it happen and they certainly need to avoid commonly made mistakes.

Pricing too high Low inventory and high demand have contributed to the rising prices of homes. The National Association of Realtors reports that the median sales price is up 17.8% in the past year and CoreLogic recently released data that July set new record growth of 18% year over year. This might give sellers a false sense of security about overpricing their home.

Pricing a home too high initially can limit activity, attract the wrong buyers and, ultimately, cause the home to realize a lower price than optimum. There is an interesting dynamic that takes place when there is a shortage of homes to show, and a new home hits the market. Buyers, who have been in the market but not purchased yet, will rush out to see the home. They are familiar with what homes are selling for and, possibly, have even lost bids on one or more. These savvy buyers expect certain amenities based on the price of the home. They can tell if a home is priced right or not.

Failure to do market preparation There are people who will buy a home that is not pristine and does not have everything in good working order, but they usually will not pay top dollar for the home. They recognize the money that needs to be spent and will adjust the price accordingly. To command the highest price, the home needs to be spotlessly clean with everything working as it should. The home needs to be depersonalized to appeal to the broadest group of people. The clutter needs to be removed so it isn’t distracting or give the impression that the rooms, counters or closets are small. It is important to evaluate if painting is necessary along with replacing floor covering, appliances and/or light fixtures.

Thinking the agent doesn’t matter Market time is down to 17 days and 89% of homes are sold within a month. These statistics might be used to rationalize that an agent is not currently playing an important role in the home but that would be a mistake. Nine out of 10 homeowners use an agent, and the four most important reasons were to help sell the home within a specific timeframe, help price the home competitively, help the seller market the home to potential buyers, and help the seller find ways to fix up the home to sell it for more money.

Being present during showings It may not be convenient, but sellers should try to leave the home when it is being shown. Buyers like to look at the home freely and ask questions or point out things to their agent. Sellers may have the best of intentions, but they have not established rapport with the buyer and don’t really know what is causing the questions.

Not letting your agent negotiate for you The role the agent plays as third-party negotiator is one of the most important things an agent does for a seller. It begins long before buyers even make an offer.

The protocol is for the buyer’s agent to go to the listing agent with the question and, if necessary, they can ask you and get back to the buyer’s agent. Buyers and sellers have inherently different objectives. Sellers want the highest price and buyers want to pay the least. Sellers want the terms of the contract in their favor and the buyers want them to favor them. Buyers want lots of contingencies to let them out of the contract and sellers want the fewest possible contingencies. Sellers want the most earnest money and buyers want to put up the least possible.

Agents are skilled at negotiation not only because of training but also experience. Sellers’ experience is usually limited to personal transactions separated by years in frequency. Agents see multiple transactions in their daily business and can guide people through difficult areas.

Not responding to offers in a timely manner Normally, an offer can be withdrawn at any time up until the point that it is accepted. The expression ‘a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush’ reminds us that the offer you have is real and the ones in the bush may never come to fruition.

A common situation occurs when there is a large amount of activity on the home and an offer comes in quickly. Instead of negotiating on that offer, the sellers wait to see if any better ones are received. By waiting, the seller runs the risk of the buyer changing their mind.

Alternatively, in the same situation described, the seller may decide to put the home on the market on Saturday morning and let prospective buyers know that they will be deciding on all offers received over the weekend on Sunday evening.

Your agent is a valuable part of selling a home because they can offer advice, bring perspective to the transaction, and suggest different ways to help you achieve your goals. Once you have the right agent, everything else will start to fall into place.

any of us experience situations that cause emotional distress or challenging hardships. In a society that often expects us to “pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back to it,” it can be frightening, disheartening and/or embarrassing to ask for help. Sharing your thoughts and feelings with friends and family can be helpful. Sometimes we may need extra support from someone with an outside perspective and with professional training. However, if we give in to the negative portrayal or stigma of mental health services, we deprive ourselves of this great opportunity.

Whether it is a life event or a general feeling of sadness, therapists are professionally-trained listeners who can assist in getting to the root cause of issues, helping to cope with emotions and making changes to work toward overcoming

challenges.

Once the decision is made to seek professional help, it’s okay to shop around for the right fit. Ask questions about specialties, licensing and treatment protocols.

Look for a therapist who is experienced in treating the areas you want to address.

Ask about their techniques and suggested length of treatment. There are numerous types of therapy to consider—individual, family, group or couple therapy.

If the connection doesn’t feel right— if you don’t trust the person or feel like they truly care—go with another choice.

A good therapist will respect this choice and should never pressure you or make you feel guilty. One of the most important factors is to be honest and open with a therapist; they are not there to judge but rather to provide support and confidence.

Jane’s Artifacts Expands

wo murals decorate the exterior walls of Jane’s Artifacts on Main Street in Hailey.

The one on the north wall is by local artist Kevin Fitzpatrick. The one on the south wall is by the students from Wood River High School’s W.A.T.E.R Club.

“They represent everything we need to do to make our community great,” said Jane Drussel, owner of Jane’s Artifacts.

These murals grace the sides of a historic downtown building with the beauty of public art—art that honors our community and the stunning Valley we call home. The fact that they are both on the sides of a local small business should tell you all you need to know about the impacts and community-first character of the business, Jane’s Artifacts, and its namesake, Jane Drussel.

“You have to do your part to help make this a great place,” said Jane, who has announced she is running for a seat on the Hailey City Council.

But this isn’t a story about Jane running for office. It’s about how Jane has been a successful small-business owner in the Wood River Valley for nearly 40 years and has recently expanded her Hailey location. The former Jane’s Holiday House, an alley away on Bullion Street, is now part of Jane Artifacts. The expanded location now offers the Valley’s best card shop while still offering a terrific selection of seasonal items—Halloween is on its way! Jane’s Artifacts has also expanded its copier services, including adding a large-format printer and the ability to print on canvas.

As Jane’s right-hand woman, George Green says, “We just have more awesomeness.”

“We’re the ‘It Store.’ If you need it, we probably have it,” Jane added.

Jane originally opened a small store in Ketchum with her late husband and longtime business partner, Kenny Drussel, in 1985, and expanded to Hailey in 1987. After selling Jane’s Paper Place in 2004, they re-opened Jane’s Artifacts in 2009 to fill the need for art, school, party supplies and so much more.

When asked about what it takes to be a successful small-business owner, Jane mentioned a few keys components: hard work, having a good staff that offers great customer service, and being a good community member.

“The thing about being a small-business owner is that you have to be willing to work 24/7. You need to be able to reinvest in your company and not take much money out until you are established, and you have to have good customer service,” Jane said. “And we always figure out a way to help just about everyone that walks in the door looking for help.”

Most of Jane’s 10-member staff—familiar, friendly faces like George, Rachel Lee and Hugo Chavez—have been working there for years.

“We’re fortunate to have good people working here,” Jane said, adding, “ and to live in such a great community.”
