Community to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month despite pandemic restrictions

here’s a saying in Spanish: “No hay mal que por bien no venga.” Translation: “There is no bad that doesn’t come with some good in it.”

When it comes to the dark damper COVID-19 restrictions have placed on Valley events in 2020, Herbert Romero has found a number of ways to shine some much needed light. With Hispanic Heritage Month fast approaching, the organizer for what will be the third annual local celebration accepted he would not be able to hold the event at Roberta McKercher Park the way he did in its first and second iteration. So, rather than one big party there, Romero has organized several smaller parties elsewhere.

“This year we’re going to bring the celebration to them rather than making them come to us,” Romero said.

Events with, in some cases, food and music and aimed at recognizing members of the community positively impacting Hispanic culture and heritage will be ongoing throughout the Valley from Sept. 15 to Oct. 16, as Hispanic Heritage Month nationally overlaps both months.

“It’s that way because Independence Day is Sept. 16 and that way it can get a good kick-off,” Romero explained.

Attention all gringos, if you don’t know now, now you know: Mexican Independence Day is not Cinco de Mayo (May 5); that’s a day celebrating a victorious battle over the French. Sept. 16 is the date marking the moment when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest, made the first cry for Mexican independence from Spain. ¿Dónde es la fiesta?

The events slotted between mid-September and mid-October across the Valley will be carried out in a COVID-safe manner, so they won’t be topping the 300-person and 1,000-person respective turnouts in years one and two. But food, music, dancing and a few tips of the sombrero to folks who’ve been instrumental to Hispanic culture and community will take place.

On Saturday, Sept. 12, from 3 to 5 p.m., La Cabanita in Ketchum will host the first of the mini-celebrations. On Saturday, Sept. 19, from 4 to 8 p.m., Lago Azul in Hailey is where the fiesta will be. And from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, Chapalitas Market in Bellevue plays host.

Sept. 26 will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony outside Jane’s Artifacts in Hailey alongside the building and right in front of the brand new mural painted there just last week. The colorful artwork depicting elements of Valley life through the lens of Hispanic men, women and children is something the store’s owner, Jane Drussel, advocated for, Romero said.

“Jane has been a proponent when it comes to the inclusion of other cultures,” Romero said. “Jane is a perfect example of what we’re asking for. She was so impressed (the mural effort) was youth-led.”

Romero, originally from Long beach, Calif., moved to the Valley with his family in 2015. In California he worked as a community organizer and by 2018 he found himself doing similar work here as a mentor to youth in the Hispanic community and a planner of various cultural events here.

In recent years, he has led the high school civic group called Nosotros United, which welcomes both Hispanic and non-Hispanic students so they can share and explain their cultural backgrounds and advocate for particular changes in society, politics and culture. Romero says he misses the regular interaction with the group but they still meet virtually or in a socially-distant capacity when possible.

Romero has been spending the last few weeks getting himself on the meeting agendas of Valley city councils, the county commissioners, and the school district.

He says in some cases there will be proclamations made official calling the 30-day period as Hispanic Heritage month in the particular jurisdictions and bringing attention to other issues impacting the Hispanic community.

During the COVID pandemic, Romero was also instrumental in developing the program called Vecinos Apoyando Vecinos (Neighbors Helping Neighbors), which acts as a resource for people seeking financial, emotional or legal help in these trying times.

“That’s one positive about COVID. We’ve created something new,” Romero said.

Fall To Begin With Music Bloom Sun Valley Opera launches garden concert Sept. 25

un Valley Opera will host live music in September. Yes, this September! Sort of.

The local vocal arts organization has begun selling tickets to its first pandemic-era concert, starring Seattle-based acting and singing talent Cayman Ilika and her longtime friend and colleague Christopher DiStefano accompanying her on piano. Billed as a “Garden Concert al Fresco” and held at a private home in Warm Springs, it is not a pavilion or opera house event, but marks a step in the direction of hearing live music performances by Sun Valley Opera again.

“My last appearance was in February in New York. My next forsure gig isn’t until August 2021,” said Ilika, who will perform a variety of country music classics and Broadway hits at the Sept. 25 event. “It’s a little scary right now.”

The fear factor has nothing to do with being on stage again for the veteran performer who has won multiple industry awards and is a proud Actors Equity member. It has to do, rather, with the performing arts industry’s future as COVID-19 restrictions have all but decimated live music in the Valley and beyond. On Sept. 15, Sun Valley Opera will present a screening of the 10 Academy Awards-winning 1961 film “West Side Story” starring Natalie Wood and Rita Moreno on the Sun Valley Lawn where folks can bring a picnic and lawn chair. It figures to be a refreshing and much-welcomed affair, but it’s still not a live show.

“I can’t wait to get back to Idaho and perform in front of real, live human beings again,” Ilika said.

This will be Ilika’s debut performance in Idaho, although she has visited the Gem State before. Her husband is a rock enthusiast and made a special trip to the Boise area earlier this year, she explained.

“Garnet is abundant there. We found some pretty cool stuff,” Ilika said.

On With The Show Ilika, a Gregory Award nominee for her lead role in the musical Patsy Cline, is one of those rare vocal talents who can both croon country and belt Broadway. She’s been the lead in Mary Poppins, a key player in Show Boat and her vocals can be heard on the original cast album of Persuasion and the studio cast album of Yankee Doodle Dandy. Ilika and DiStefano will perform a number of hits from those and similar shows.

“Chris (DiStefano) is that annoying performer who can do everything,” Ilika quipped regarding her accompanist and musical arranger.

That’s why she’s especially excited to perform a duet with him made famous by Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline.

After the Sun Valley performance, Ilika says she’ll be back in Washington state primarily focused on improving her teaching and teacher-support skills for her seven-year-old whose school will not have in-person instruction until some time next year.

“I have a whole new appreciation for teachers. I don’t know how they do it,” Ilika said.

On Sept. 4, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game received a report of an aggressive cow moose that bluff charged a family in the Adams Gulch area north Ketchum.

NO BONES ABOUT IT THE “WEEKLY” FISHING REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 9 - 22 FROM PICABO ANGLER

S

eptember marks the unofficial start of fall in the Wood River Valley, and with it comes some of the season’s finest fishing. While most of our waters are quite low, recent cooler temperatures have provided a needed respite from the heat and have us thinking about fall hatches on local fisheries.

On the Big Wood, we should soon see the arrival of one of the river’s best hatches—the Western red quill (aka Hecuba).

This is a large, meaty mayfly that appears on mild afternoons and tempts the river’s rainbows and browns. Use size 10 and 12 imitations such as the H&L Variant, Parachute Adams and Purple Haze. Terrestrials such as ants, beetles and hoppers are still prevalent, and a few small mayflies and caddis are found along the river. Long, light leaders and a stealthy approach are required.

Silver Creek continues to produce well in the morning with BWOs, Tricos, and Callibaetis.

As the temps cool, the Trico and Callibaetis hatches will wane, while the BWO activity intensifies. Recent mornings and evenings have seen good numbers of flying ants on the Creek, and hoppers and damsels are still productive during the afternoon. Toward the end of the month, look for the arrival of the Mahogany Dun. The Lower Big Lost River is still flowing strong at about 365 CFS, but the fishing can be excellent in the right water. Tricos and small BWOs are present in the mornings, and the hopper bite is still going strong in the afternoons. Take your nymph box when fishing the lower Lost; the river is full of midge, cranefly, and BWO nymphs.

The Upper Big Lost River is low, but fish are still taking a variety of terrestrials and attractor dries. It’s a great place to find solitude and hunt for some truly impressive cutthroats. Keep moving, cover lots of water, and concentrate your efforts on the prime water.

The South Fork Boise River is flowing at around 600 CFS— ideal flows for the wading angler. Look for the continued presence of Pink Alberts, Flavs, BWOs, and terrestrials.

As autumn gains its hold throughout the Valley, streamer fishing on local waters can be extremely productive. Our new, custom-tied Sparkle Minnows are deadly.

Wing-shooting opportunities have also started; forest grouse and dove seasons are underway.

Fall is a spectacular time in the Wood River Valley!

Mentor Dogs

any people still question whether dogs learn from each other or not.

Over and over I have seen dogs learn both good and bad from other dogs.

About seven years ago, I had a puppy here for training as a service dog. His name was Rainier. Rainier came here from Washington State with his breeder, Sharon.

At that time, all of my dogs would ring a bell to tell me they had to go out. As we were visiting in the living room that night, one of my older dogs went over to the door and rang the bell. Rainier just happened to be watching him as he rang the bell. Within seconds, Rainier went over and did exactly what my older dog did! Immediately I jumped up, said, “YES!” and opened the door for Rainier to go out. I followed him out the door and gave him a treat when he did go potty.

From that day forward, NEVER did Rainier go potty in the house. Rainier was only 10 weeks old at the time.

I think a confident, older dog can be a great mentor for puppies. For the most part, they are fair and will discipline a puppy when needed, but even more so, they teach the puppy that there is no reason to bark at such and such. Or even, going in the car is great fun!

On the same hand, an unruly older dog can also teach those bad behaviors to youngsters.

A dog that is fear aggressive can pass those behaviors on to a puppy. An unruly older dog can teach bad greeting habits, jumping, growling, digging, etc.

Shepherds that use dogs for herding sheep, cattle or even ducks and other livestock always place the young puppies in with the experienced herding dog. They learn from watching, then practice what they see.

By the same token, a fearful or anxious puppy can be comforted by an older, confident dog. This can also be true for adults.

If one adult dog is fearful, a confident adult mentor dog can help greatly in teaching the fearful dog that there is no need for the fear.

While most fearful behavior is genetic, according to new studies, a calm, confident mentor dog can be a great influence and make things much better.

I am not suggesting that you run out and get two dogs! You must also remember that while you look different, you are still a pack member to a dog. If you are nervous, you can mentor that to your singleton dog or puppy. If you are calm and act as a leader for a fearful

dog, you can mentor a sense of comfort to your dog as a leader.

Mentoring can be either positively meaningful or dreadful in terms of helping another dog. The important thing to remember is that dogs learn from those around them and you can use that to your advantage, or be aware of the disadvantage.

he world is full of surprises this year.

News headlines come at us rapid-fire. This virus moves quickly from place to place with seemingly little warning and then suddenly amplifies in a new place, almost overnight. A parade of new information arrives every day: new wildfires, new school adaptations, new human conflicts, and new worse news about ecological systems suffering.

It makes me wonder when we might stop being surprised by surprises.

There is something biologically unsettling and unnerving (literally, in the sense that it affects our nervous systems negatively) in not knowing what the future holds.

Our Homo sapiens brains crave and are at their best with consistency, stability, and safety; there is much going on in the world right now that is making our brains feel on edge and uneasy. Even if it’s only to a small degree, and if parts of our lives still roughly resemble our lives at this time last year, the heightened sense of The Unknown each day is wearing on a lot of people’s psychologies right now.

So, is it fair to say that the surprises have become unsurprising?

All of this begins to stretch my ability to describe in words. But, in short: in these times where I constantly feel somewhat uncertain of what is around the corner, maybe I shouldn’t be surprised by the things that surprise me.

Like, the fireweed that I stumbled across this week.

I hadn’t expected to come around the corner and see fireweed. Although, I should have. I was walking through a canyon that burned, in patchy fashion, during the Beaver Creek Fire in August of 2013. And, true to its name, fireweed does an excellent job of re-colonizing burned areas—it thrives in the charred aftermath of forest fires. It is a so-called “successional” or “seral” species, which means that it thrives in the transitions between disturbances in an ecosystem.

And there the fireweed was, all along the creek bottom that burned a few years ago, just like that.

More surprisingly, I certainly hadn’t expected to see the fireweed already acting like it was autumn. Fireweed is a plant that presents tall and beautiful stalks of pinkish-purplish flowers throughout summertime, and those flowers turn rapidly to white fuzz (“go to seed”) as the fall season settles in.

There is a saying: “When fireweed turns to cotton, summer’s soon forgotten.”

There is something else: it has been claimed that when fireweed goes completely to seed, you can expect snow in six weeks.

I hadn’t thought I would see the flowers already gone to seed like that. I hadn’t thought summer was over, yet. But, neither the flowers nor the mountains, the seasons nor time itself, care much for what I expect or think. Nor does the world. And there they were: the fireweed in front of me was thick with white cotton, with almost no pink flowers left. A sign that autumn has officially arrived.

Can I Make Money With A Clear Conscience?

Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) may also be labeled as social investment, sustainable investing, socially conscious, green, moral, or ethical investing.

Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) investing shines the spotlight on how much effort a company puts into having a positive impact on its community, suppliers, vendors, product sourcing, customers, environment and, most importantly, its employees. ESG factors considered include environmental issues like sustainable resources and climate change, but also topics such as labor practices, data security, and product safety.

Impact investing looks for a specific company, organization, or community to help them create something positive for society. Impact investing targets a particular purpose, project, or program to make an impact. Many impact investments are privately managed and are not available or traded on a public exchange.

Many financial advisors have the capability to support their clients in identifying values they hold. Portfolios can then be designed by either negatively screening investments to exclude investments that fail to meet specified requirements, or by positively targeting holdings

that uphold a client’s philosophical views. Once identified, ethical guidelines can be used to select equities, mutual funds, and other securities that align with those criteria. As the importance of value-based investing grows among investors, so do the investment options.

Sustainable investing strategies have grown in popularity with investors 107.4 percent annually since 2012.

‘Haftas’ And ‘Wantstas’

or most of the time, my life has been full of “haftas” and “wantstas.” It started when I got out of the U.S. Air Force in 1964. I immediately picked up the biggest “hafta”—paying for a roof over my head.

This one has never ended. And, with no mom and no “chow hall,” another “hafta” emerged—getting food and drink to live on. That, too, has remained paramount in my life. Then, when a wife and a son came along, more “haftas” loomed. But I was in love, so that didn’t bother me, until I realized, “I have to get a job, which will pay for my family and me.” And, heating would be good. Thus, another “hafta.” So, roof, food, heat and money from the job to pay for everything. That’s it? Well, what about lights at night and power to operate those things.

Okay, okay. Welcome to the “hafta” electricity bill.

When I discovered my job would be miles from my home, I thought, “I ‘hafta’ get a car, and if it breaks down, I’ll ‘hafta’ get it fixed.” So many “haftas” and not enough “wantstas.” I pondered that and said to myself, “What do you really ‘wantsta’ do?” I replied, “I ‘wantsta’ play my guitar and entertain in clubs and write a little on the side.”

And, so I did for many years to come.

However, my life became a continuing war with “haftas” against “wantstas.” I needed a better home, a newer car, newer furniture, new clothes for my family and for me, a newer guitar, sheet music, union dues and booze.

Then came doctor bills, insurance packages and lawyer fees. There were also sports tickets, HBO, birthday gifts, vacations, new babies and... taxes! Eek! Up down, down up, up down—it became overwhelming. I had to get rid of “wantstas” and concentrate solely on “haftas.”

It became “rat race – America.” I was about to explode, but then, I moved to Idaho. Idaho? How in the hell did I get here? (That will be another story, later on, dear readers.)

Now, I’m old and retired, living on a fixed income. I also have a tortoiseshell cat named Myles who keeps me totally entertained. I still write, but there’s not many “wantstas” left with still the same basic “haftas”—shelter, food, heat, Netflix, no booze, phone bill.

In the winter, there’s snowplow paying and power bills. Other times, there are doctor bills and occasional operations.

I’m quite happy now, actually. I watch my cat and emulate everything she does, like staying up all night, drinking water from the tap and sleeping most of the day. I don’t “hafta” have a job or go on stage and entertain a drunken crowd and … oh yeah, there’s a new one—“goinstas.” I’m “goinstas” win the lottery. I’m “goinstas” travel the world, I’m “goinstas” be a famous writer. You know, ideas you will probably never achieve.

Now it’s good times in the Wood River Valley and I’m at peace. Oh, damnit, I “hafta” get this in before the deadline! Nothing’s perfect.

District 26 Senatorial Debate Shaping Up, In Secret Location

The Central Idaho for Liberty (CI4L) is inviting the press and a limited audience to its Senatorial Debate between incumbent Democrat Idaho State Senator Michelle Stennett and her challenger, Republican candidate Eric Parker.

The event is slated for Sept. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Hailey. It will be live streamed but the organization hadn’t announced the URL prior to press deadline Tuesday.

Each will provide one moderator. Parker has selected a member of CI4L as his moderator. Sen. Stennett was encouraged to provide a second moderator affiliated with a properly registered political organization, the CI4L said. Each moderator will have time to ask six questions for a total of 12 questions for the debate.

The moderators will flip a coin before the start of the event to determine which moderator will ask the first question. The two moderators will take turns asking questions of the debate participants; they can direct their questions to whichever debater they choose first.

Each debate participant will have up to three minutes to answer the question.

There will be no rebuttals. After all of the 12 questions have been asked, each debate participant will have four minutes for a closing statement. The debater whose moderator asked the first question will be the first to give the closing statement.

After the debate is over, the members of the press are welcome to interview

Still Waiting

ecently, I watched two non-escapist TV features.

As both tugged at my heart, I am compelled to write about them. I maintain that the advent of television changed immensely the way we look at things; distrust about Vietnam grew as television showed what was really happening in contrast to political spin.

First, I viewed the August 28 reshowing of the great March on Washington when Martin Luther King Jr. shared “I have a dream” with thousands of peaceful marchers and audiences around the world. As I finished listening to his powerful speech, the camera panned over the audience singing “We Shall Overcome” together. I had forgotten the crowd consisted of both black and white people of all ages holding hands together in racial unity. My thoughts were mixed at that concluding sweep of film. I shed tears of joy for humanity’s progress, but I then was left with sadness.

What has happened? Why had we not finished that great leap forward? Why, even now, are we still waiting for a happy landing?

It began with preserved footage of a Catskills summer camp intended solely for the handicapped with all sorts of disabilities, from polio to cerebral palsy and other disastrous events or illnesses. At first it was painful to see, like recalling the humiliating “freak shows” of Barnum & Bailey. I was uncomfortable watching these precious youngsters talk to each other, often laboriously, expressing what so many teenagers need: respect, independence, nonjudgmental friendship, affection, and privacy, as they were seldom alone. Several could barely speak, some so slowly that it required patience and empathy to understand. But their campmates and counselors always listened.

These kids were blessed by not experiencing the fate of most disabled youngsters of that era (the ’50s and ’60s).

The documentary switched to showing the abandoned disabled, some sent from birth or early childhood, at a facility called Middletown, living a nightmare that even the worst purveyor of horror films could not match, a visual echo of Holocaust victims. Where is our humanity? The Catskill campers were at least better off than the hideously abused and neglected inmates.

Sometimes I wanted to tune off the film because I felt a bit like a voyeur watching intimate moments, but the rest of the film followed the courageous, often debilitating demonstrations and hard work of many of those now-grown campers, who forced our government to pass the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990. This film is highly inspiring, even though we haven’t fully healed our relationships with this minority. In conclusion, Judith Haumann, a polio victim, former camper and successful teacher and leader, expressed pride in the progress of this social movement. She acknowledged that the disabled are still waiting for change, but it will only come from society.

‘Get Flu Shot’ Governor Says

Idaho will remain in Stage 4 of the Idaho Rebounds plan for another two weeks while state officials emphasize the need for Idahoans to get flu shots to protect themselves and their families and lighten the burden on Idaho’s healthcare system.

Overall COVID-19 hospital admissions statewide are still too high to move past Stage 4, but Governor Little said a lot of progress is being made.

“Statewide, our numbers and metrics are looking pretty good. In fact, even in many of the ‘hot spots’ we are seeing encouraging trends. But that is not a reason to let our guard down. As we approach fall, the opportunity for community spread will increase and we need to ramp up our personal actions,” Governor Little said.

Governor Little noted dropping temperatures will drive people indoors where they will be sharing physical space, and he encouraged all Idahoans to take steps to be safe and protect their friends and family. With flu season approaching, the governor urged Idahoans to get a flu shot to free up healthcare resources.

“These variables threaten our healthcare capacity—the very thing we are trying to protect so that our economic rebound can continue and so our students can learn in their classrooms where they deserve to be,” Governor Little said.

oes this sound familiar? “ _______ County found itself with a sizeable problem. Two pivotal events occurred, the first in 2012 when a devastating storm caused widespread power outages. The storm was reason enough for the county to seek better resilience. But the electrical infrastructure was beginning to show its age. The challenge; gaining resilience, going green, updating infrastructure— without breaking the budget.”

This story is not about Blaine County, Idaho, but Montgomery County in Maryland. In 2014 Montgomery County put out an RFP for solutions and Schneider Electric offered a plan in concert with Duke Energy Renewables “that would allow the county to install two advanced microgrids and upgrade aging electrical infrastructure—all without any upfront investment. This was done using what’s known as an Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) agreement.”

The project included a microgrid at the Public Safety Headquarters, including 2 MWs of solar panels producing 3.3 million kWh per year, advanced cybersecurity, natural gas generators, electric vehicle charging, combined heat and power plants, and $4 million of electrical distribution upgrades. The long-term contract created a locked-in energy rate so that the county avoids market-price escalations of electricity in the future.

“Having the microgrids will give the county an edge when the next big storm hits. Microgrids typically run in parallel with the utility grid but when a power outage occurs, the microgrid will island from the grid. Protected from the grid disturbance, the microgrids will then power the correctional facility and public safety headquarters with its on-site resources, in this case solar, trigeneration, and natural gas generators. When the grid is restored, the microgrid reconnects and relies on a mix of its on-site resources and utility power, depending on which is advantageous for the county at any given time… The two microgrids are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6,800 metric tons each year.”

Schneider Electric is a big company with annual revenue of over $27 billion and 135,000 employees globally. In North America, Schneider Electric is making a big move right now in 2020 into smaller microgrids (under 5 MW of load) as they see a massive market in small to medium-sized buildings needing cost savings as well as resiliency from fire events and power outages.

“Mark Feasel, Schneider’s president of smart grid, North America, described the company’s journey as a drive to change the energy landscape. He said that the market’s first step toward transformation began about five years ago when technology allowed easier integration of renewable energy into microgrids. This expanded the value proposition, particularly as renewables dropped in cost.

Now microgrids not only promised resilience—a benefit that gave them appeal to hospitals, military bases and data centers—but they also offered sustainability with a better price point.”

Sun Valley Company already has a microgrid of sorts, including an agreement with Idaho Power to be self-operating on their campus with some solar and a diesel generator, but it certainly could add some batteries and have greater resiliency. I’m sure Schneider Electric would be most happy to quote them a no-money-down, Energy-as-a-Service option. Blaine County can be a success story like Montgomery County and spend the $38 million Idaho Power wants from us on true backup energy, with generators and batteries in our north county rather than on a non-solution.

It’s Worth Digging A Little Deeper

here are hundreds of thousands of people who believe, for one reason or another, they cannot currently afford to buy a home. Some people may not for any number of reasons, but it would be very surprising to know how many can buy a home but have gotten some bad information along the way. It’s worth digging a little deeper to find out the facts.

John and Karen have been renting a home for the last five years at $2,000 a month. During that time, the value of the home they were renting went up by $30,000 while the unpaid balance decreased by $18,400. Even though they were fortunate the rent remained constant over the five years, they missed out on close to $50,000 of equity that the owner realized instead of them.

Another thing to consider with today’s low interest rates is that it is quite common for a mortgage payment to be lower than a tenant is paying in rent for a similar property. So, in this example, John and Karen paid more to rent than a house payment would have been and missed out on the equity buildup that occurred due to appreciation and amortization.

The simple fact is that when tenants like John and Karen pay their rent, the landlord is the beneficiary of the rent received as well as the equity earned. Over time, the rent paid by John and Karen and other tenants will pay for the landlord’s rental. It a great concept and a good investment.

True, not everyone can afford a home. A buyer needs money for a down payment and closing costs. They also need to have income and good credit to qualify for the mortgage. Some of these may seem insurmountable, but instead of imagining that buying a home is not in the cards at the current time, talking to a real estate professional is a better route to take.

There are lots of low-down-payment mortgages available, including 100 percent financing for qualified veterans and USDA-eligible buyers. It is sometimes more difficult to find sellers willing to pay all or part of a buyer’s closing costs when in-

ventory is low, but lenders do allow it. It is a matter of finding the willing seller.

The source of the down payment could be a gift from a family member as long as there is no repayment expected. It’s amazing how many parents or grandparents might be willing to help a relative get into a home. Funds for a down payment may be available as loans or withdrawals from qualified retirement programs like IRAs or 401k plans. It’s worth investigating based on what retirement programs you have.

Good credit is necessary to qualify for a loan but buyers should not assume that theirs is not adequate. A trusted mortgage professional can assess a situation and may be able to suggest some things that will not only raise the score enough to be approved but, possibly, even raise the score enough to qualify for a better interest rate.

There are a lot of misunderstandings about whether a person can or cannot qualify for a home at this time. Instead of relying on secondhand information or something that might be floating around on the Internet, spend some time with a real estate professional who can give you the facts, assess your situation and, if necessary, point you in the right direction to get help from a trusted mortgage professional. Senior Centers: Delivering Vital Connections

his year’s theme was chosen to highlight how senior centers deliver vital connections to support older adults aging well, and we love how that describes our own organization. We saw it firsthand this spring as we helped our senior community stay safe at home with our Meals on Wheels program.

Preventing social isolation is a vital mission for all senior centers, and a big part of what we do here at The Senior Connection. From lunch with friends in the dining room, a friendly face with a home-delivered meal, friends to help keep us exercising, and fun field trips, we offer ways to find that social connection that is so important to our well-being. We have been exploring other ways to address isolation for when we cannot all be together, such as our Senior Friend Line and Lemonade on the Lawn.

The key words for this year’s celebration are Mind, Body, Spirit, Community. They are important reminders to take a holistic approach to our life and health. I hope you will take time this month to reflect on these important aspects and hopefully find a program here at The Senior Connection to help fulfill them.

Another important event during September is Falls Prevention Awareness Week. If you are not already attending, check out our Fit & Fall Proof classes on Monday and Wednesday. They are currently limited to five people and reservations are required. In addition to the 11 a.m. class on Monday and Wednesday, we are adding an additional class on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.

ispanic Heritage Month began as Hispanic Heritage Week. Hispanic Heritage Week was established by legislation sponsored by Rep. Edward R. Roybal of Los Angeles and was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968. In 1988, the commemorative week was expanded to a month (September 15 to October 15) by legislation sponsored by Rep. Esteban Edward Torres (D-Pico Rivera), amended by Senator Paul Simon and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the commemoration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Hispanic countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, who all declared independence in 1821.

In addition, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence days on September 16, September 18, and September 21, respectively.

Since 1989, all Presidents have given a Presidential Proclamation to mark Hispanic Heritage Month.

iven the large number of infections our community experienced in the late spring, you likely know someone who had COVID. I believe this increased level of awareness has contributed to high levels of compliance with prevention, protection and mitigation efforts and have helped us keep our case numbers low this summer. However, it is unlikely herd immunity is playing a large role in preventing another surge. Estimates are that a population needs somewhere between 55->70 percent prevalence for herd immunity, which far surpasses our ~25 percent rate. Therefore, it is important to keep diligent in practicing the three W’s: Watch your distance; Wash your hands; Wear a face covering.

These measures will be particularly important as we head inside and into cold and flu season. It will be hard to tell them apart and it is possible to contract both at the same time, potentially a very serious situation. What has struck me the most about COVID-19 is the wide range of symptoms patients experience. Interestingly, early on, we had individuals telling us about their loss of taste and smell. This was a symptom that was unlike any other respiratory infection we had come up against. Some people had sniffles, headache, cough, congestion, diarrhea, fever, chills, difficulty breathing, and/or muscle aches and more. And some had all of them. If someone has any symptoms that are concerning, they should take all precautions to avoid spreading the disease, and then get examined and/or tested. A couple days at home is a small price to pay to keep others safe.

This is quite a stressful time on all of us. Our ingrained routines and social connections have been totally disrupted. Having been on the front lines, I saw how many people were sick and how badly they suffered, and how little there was to do to help them, other than supportive care. I still see patients with long-term disabilities from their infections months ago whose lives are completely changed. I have lost people who were close to me. I would like all of us to feel for the people around us, to care for them, and to do what is in our individual powers to make everyone around us safe. Gardening For Resilience

Gov. Little Deposits Big Dollars Into Unemployment

Idaho small businesses and employers will not see “huge tax increases next year,’’ according to Governor Brad Little, who approved a $200 million transfer of coronavirus relief funds last week to keep the Idaho Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund solvent. It was in line with a recommendation by the Coronavirus Financial Advisory Committee.

“Our move to put even more dollars toward supporting Idaho businesses helps keep jobs and continues our strong economic rebound,” Governor Brad Little said. “Without today’s transfer, businesses would have to pay nearly double in unemployment insurance taxes next year to keep the Idaho Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund solvent moving forward.”

The move is intended to encourage more hiring by preventing tax increases for businesses of more than $300 per employee that could have occurred if Governor Little had not taken decisive action now. The Idaho chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), which represents 4,000 small business owners in the state, praised the move.

“The whole art to restoring the nation’s economy begins with luring small business owners back to reopen and re-hire, and one of the most important ways to do that is to not hit them with additional costs,” NFIB Idaho State Director Suzanne Budge said in a letter lobbying Governor Little.

The Governor’s office said the State of Idaho has taken multiple other steps to prioritize Idaho businesses in the allocation of federal relief dollars, including: • Providing Return to Work incentives • Distributing more than $75 million to 8,700 Idaho small businesses in cash payments of up to $10,000 • Supporting close to 37,000 businesses with their PPE needs to keep businesses open and workers and patrons safe • Allowing local governments to use relief dollars to support businesses.

In other unemployment news, the State of Idaho will begin making payments this week for the Trump Administration’s plan to offer extended unemployment benefits.

“We chose to participate in President Trump’s new program as part of a comprehensive approach to our economic rebound,” Governor Little said.

The president issued an executive memorandum earlier this month creating the Lost Wages Assistance program and replacing the recently expired Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program, which paid an extra $600 per week to those receiving unemployment benefits. The Lost Wages program is funded through the Federal Emergency Management Administration.

To qualify for the additional $300 per week, claimants must be unemployed due to COVID-19 and receive a weekly benefit amount of at least $100. Payments will be retroactive for the week ending Aug. 1 for eligible claimants and will run as long as funding is available, up to five weeks, ending Aug. 29, 2020.

To ensure individuals who need it most are receiving the new benefit, Governor Little directed the Idaho Department of Labor to make sure the $300 per week in additional benefits is also provided to individuals who receive less than $100 per week in unemployment benefits.

nterest in backyard food production is soaring. With empty supermarket shelves and an ongoing economic crisis, it’s no surprise that people everywhere planted their first garden this season.

Edible gardening is an important way to increase personal and community resilience. That is why we have initiated a collaboration with Wood River Seed Library, University of Idaho Extension & 4-H, Sawtooth Botanical Garden, Wood River Community YMCA, Wood River Land Trust, Upper Big Wood River Grange and gardeners throughout our Valley to start 5B Resilience Gardens!

This collaboration increases awareness of, involvement in, and accessible space for gardening as a means to cultivating personal and community resilience. The 5B Resilience Gardens initiative seeks to broaden access to local gardening resources and provide accessible gardening spaces for all members of our community.

A 5B Resilience Garden can be any level of edible (culinary and medicinal) plant production not sold on a commercial scale. This may include potted plants, edible landscape, gardens in yards or larger shared plots.

Be on the lookout for handcrafted garden flags denoting resilience gardens throughout the community, including at the Wood River YMCA, The Hope Garden and the Sawtooth Botanical Garden. Upcoming educational events include a composting class via Zoom, hosted by the Hailey Public Library on Sept. 24, a Grange Garden Fall Workshop & Harvest Share event on Oct. 10, and the first seed cleaning workday on Oct. 24. The Voices Of The Community Wood River Radio

hey create the soundtrack for life here in the Wood River Valley, and their voices are as familiar as an old friend’s.

The local radio stations of Wood River Media, KECH 95.3, KSKI 94.5 and STAR 107.5, have been part of daily life in the heart of Idaho for decades. Now under new ownership, their goal is to become stronger voices for the Wood River Valley.

“I’ve been in the radio business for 39 years,” said Richard Mecham, the new owner of Wood River Radio. “All these years later radio still works as effectively as it did in 1981. If we take the time to do it right, it works every time.”

Mecham got into radio businesses in Las Vegas and his career includes managing stations in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. He bought his first station in 2011, and now owns radio stations throughout the Northern Rockies, including 11 in Idaho Falls.

“Ninety-three percent of people listen to the radio,” Mecham said. “It’s the first time in history that radio is reaching more people than TV.” Radio is how Sun Valley reached Richard. He first came to the area for a family reunion back in 1980. After dialing his car radio to KSKI, he said to his wife, “Wouldn’t it be great to own a radio station here someday?”

That day came last fall and Mecham is thrilled to now be guiding the longstanding local radio stations. KSKI took over the FM dial when it started broadcasting from atop Bald Mountain in 1977.

KECH radio first hit the airways in 1988. STAR 107 rounds out the trifecta. The new kid on the block, STAR offers pop music, while KSKI offers modern and adult contemporary, and KECH serves up lots of classic rock.

“We love to help the community and drive more cash to local businesses,” Mecham said about his goal as owner, adding, “We’re really lucky to have some incredible talent here. People like Doug who really care about the community.”

“We’re small but we’re mighty,” Doug said about the staff of Wood River Media. “We really strive to be there for the community, to be plugged into what’s happening and be a voice for the community.”
