“Like other advanced economies, we are undergoing a significant economic transformation here in [Eastern] Ontario. The rise of the creative economy is to be welcomed. Our goal is to raise the creativity content in all our jobs and industries” Ontario in the Creative Age, Martin Prosperity Institute, February 2009 The Steering Committee and Technical Advisory Group" Members 2010

Technical Advisory Group (TAG)

TAG members represent the research, business, forest, government and NGO communities; all are dedicated to forest and community sustainability through innovation. The TAG hasn’t met recently as a whole but approximately 40 meetings in the past year have included TAG members on an as-needed basis. This has worked well and great progress has been made thanks to the dedication and belief that together, we have the capacity to link forest resources and our knowledge and transportation corridors using innovation, determination and creativity.

Port of Prescott

Key to the success of the OEWC &EIP (Wood Centre) is the $34.7 million infrastructure project now underway at the Port. The management at the Port works closely with the OEWC &EIP group. The Port is owned and managed by the Township and serves all of Eastern Ontario and some of Western Québec. As the only deep sea port between Oshawa and Valleyfield, Québec, it is key geographic advantage for the Wood Centre and the entire region. See www.portofprescott.com The Wood Centre will be federally incorporated soon. We are focused on implementing the corporate objectives below:

!the encouragement of a forest and biomass based and innovation-inspired cluster of industrial, business and demonstration projects in an ecologically sound environment the facilitation of a platform for scientific collaboration, business development, demonstration, piloting, commercialization, exporting and marketing of a wide array of innovative value-added wood and biomass products, including but not limited to: solid wood building components, biochemicals and bioenergy assistance to the forest industry in creating uses for underutilized, lower value wood in Eastern Ontario and the region and participation in the!restructuring of the forest industry of the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence forest for the benefit of rural communities!and in partnership with a variety of other organizations, academic institutions, individuals and agencies with compatible goals. !

Three fourth-year Engineering and Applied Science students are working on a TEAM project identifying the best business opportunities utilizing the chemical transformation of woody biomass. Senior scientists with wide industrial experience are guiding them.

GreenField Ethanol at Johnstown (above)

The folks at GreenField in their letter of understanding, stated “this centre is ideally positioned to bridge the gap between scientific and technological discoveries and the subsequent commercialization of innovative utilization of innovative utilization of forest and agricultural feed stocks and associated byproducts.” The plant is now successfully operating at 110% of capacity and is currently researching cellulosic ethanol at their Chatham location. SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry State University of New York, College of Environmental Science & Forestry and EOMF MOU Working Group met December 8, 2009 at the test sites for fast growing poplars and willows at the Ferguson Forest Centre. With 20 years of research on cellulosic ethanol from wood, SUNY-ESF is a key partner. A meeting with Tom Amidon and others is slated for March 18, 2010 baled willow at FFS

restructuring of the southern/eastern Ontario forest industry. A tour of the MaRS Innovation centre in downtown Toronto reconfirmed our vision of innovation in creating a wide range of products from sustainably managed mixed hard wood forests - the most significant in North America. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council(NSERC) is “shaping tomorrow’s forest industry through R&D.” This was the subject of our March 2, 2010 meeting in Ottawa. Budget 2010 included the word “forest” or “forestry” 33 times; a good sign? We know Canada can use and export bioproducts in all three sectors: value-added materials, energy and chemicals. the OEWC will be a Flagship Demonstration Project utilizing sustainable forest and woody crops, on a transportation system that serves the entire Great Lakes/St.Lawrence economic trading area and all domestic and international markets available via the Atlantic ocean and beyond. Editor’s note Many thanks to those who help and inspire our initiative and to those who believe nothing can stand in our way. We need your continued support and enthusiasm.

On February 9, 2010 a consultation was held with Minister Michael Gravelle at Queen’s Park. The minister encouraged us and we have worked out a strategy with him Thanks also to Leo Hall and Brian Barkley to make Ontario a strong partner in the for photos.
