Dear Friends of Women’s Lunch Place, In order to meet the growing number and heightened needs of our guests, 2019 was a year of strategic investment and innovation. Together over the last 37 years, we have built a reputation as a recognized leader in providing life changing, effective programming for the most vulnerable women in Boston struggling with homelessness and poverty. As we continuously improve programming to meet the increased acuity of need for more than 1,500 women annually - we recruit and retain employees with targeted expertise to respond to our guests’ complex issues. This year our investment resulted in hiring two clinicians with extensive experience in mental health and substance use disorder treatment - Maggie Giles, MS, Director of Programs and Rachel Klein, LICSW, Shelter Manager. WLP sees this as a crucial turning point that ensures our long-term viability and will drive our guests’ success as we stand with them in their journey to achieve more stable lives. In FY 2019, Women’s Lunch Place was selected by MIT’s Executive MBA program to receive pro bono consulting services worth more than $35,000 to address an operational challenge. The MIT and WLP team engaged in an in-depth review of WLP’s Advocacy Program. We know that women who are homeless, are members of a racial minority, live in poverty, or have a serious mental illness and/or cooccurring substance use disorder face formidable barriers to accessing services. The shame, stigma and fear our guests experience results in them not seeking care. WLP and MIT’s root cause analysis highlighted our ability to seize opportunities to redesign our approach and make meaningful connections with our most compromised guests. Our advocacy and direct care teams now welcome women with a seamless, integrated approach regardless of where a woman is…in our dining room, advocacy, resource center or in the community. This redesign, alongside a gifted staff and courageous guests, has made real change happen at Women’s Lunch Place. Thank you for your care and commitment that made it possible for WLP to continue to respond to the needs of 250 women every day.

With gratitude,

Kay Calvert Chair, Board of Directors

NEED

There has been a steady increase in the number of aging homeless women who have complex health and behavioral health conditions. The mortality rate for the unsheltered population is 10 times higher than the general population, and 3 times higher than those who access shelters. Despite unemployment rates decreasing, hunger rates have increased in Massachusetts by 71% over the past decade. Massachusetts tops the nation in economic insecurity for elders living alone.

Program Overview For more than 37 years WLP has occupied a unique space in the homelessness service provider sector. As overnight shelters require individuals to leave during the day, WLP welcomes 250 women daily, 1,500 annually, while providing a low-threshold, safe, judgment-free community. WLP’s meals program, direct care services, and advocacy interventions mirror the public health model providing women the opportunity to improve their lives while making healthy choices about food, increasing access to affordable housing, job search, health, mental health, substance use disorder treatment, and legal aid. Our programming models this five-tier framework starting with the lowest level of intervention allowing a positive impact for every woman - healthy nutrition and a safe environment.

Healthy Meals Program Our Healthy Meals Program is at the core of our mission. We know that hunger, homelessness, and health inequities are inextricably linked, leaving women at increased risk for premature mortality and other serious health-related issues. Ongoing poor nutrition results in diabetes, heart disease, and many other health and mental health problems. Seventy-six percent of guests do not have a reliable source of nutrition, and many lack kitchens and resources to purchase and prepare meals. Annually, our Healthy Meals Program meets the nutritional needs of 1,500 women with little or no other access to healthy food. Our committed staff and volunteers prepare and serve guests breakfast and lunch restaurant-style allowing women to sit in community with others and be nourished. As women begin to trust and rely on healthy, delicious meals they also begin to contemplate accessing other critical services offered by WLP.

Advocacy We believe housing is a human right. Yet, in FY 2019, we saw a 10% increase in the number of guests experiencing homelessness. WLP is keenly focused on securing housing and preventing homelessness. Our advocates provide the expert assistance necessary to help women successfully apply for and ultimately secure low-income, subsidized housing. Recently, we have seen women benefit from WLP support after they are housed. This promising practice is an area WLP will continue to pursue as we actively work with women to ensure they remain stably housed. Last year advocates helped 182 women with acute housing situations, which resulted in their moving from shelters and the streets to safe, permanent housing; from unsafe places to a safer neighborhood; and to receiving financial assistance to pay rent and utility arrears that prevented evictions. Through advocacy/care management we teach women skills to create and manage a budget and help them access public assistance benefits, we coordinate follow-up care with other agencies and professionals to assure that each woman receives needed services, and we provide funds to help pay for vocational training, classes, and other personal advancement opportunities.

Outreach Advocacy Initiative A significant portion of our guests are difficult to keep housed due to severe mental illness, substance use disorders, and severe trauma from domestic violence. Many of the guests also face barriers to stable housing due to medical issues, cognitive issues, sexual identity, and immigration status. The outreach advocacy initiative has successfully engaged with over 120 women with serious mental illness, addiction and chronic homelessness who are now in the process of housing search and accessing non-emergent health and behavioral health services. womenslunchplace.org | 5

Program Overview Creative Expressions Beyond hunger and homelessness, the vast majority of our guests have suffered trauma resulting in a loss of their ability to connect with others. We know that the process of creating art improves a woman’s sense of well-being and helps women develop a greater feeling of control. It also relieves symptoms associated with anxiety, loss, depression, and eating disorders. Our Creative Expression Program allows women to connect with caring staff, expressive art therapy interns and other women in our community as they build a sense of belonging. Our art classes improve a woman’s self-esteem and offer her ways to express her voice and experiences through artistic expressions, such as painting, drawing, jewelry-making, sewing, photography, quilting, knitting, and music. Within this program we see women develop a sense of pride and accomplishment for not only their creations but also for other women within the WLP community.

Direct Care WLP’s Guest Services team assists over 250 women every day. Located in our community dining room, the staff welcome guests warmly and ask, “how can we help?” Women are offered wrap-around services in response to their basic, yet critical needs, including an 11-bed nap room, shower and laundry facilities, emergency clothing, daily necessities, feminine hygiene products, and toiletries available to every guest. WLP is more than a safety net, it is a community, thanks to support groups, yoga, health and wellness workshops, classes, community gatherings, music, and group outings.

Resource Center + Library The Resource Center provides women access to the necessary tools to advocate for themselves, get assistance with resume writing, job and housing searches, apply for public assistance benefits, and reconnect with family and friends. Guests have free access to computers, telephones, phone messages, postal mail services, reference materials, and a lending library. Women’s Lunch Place is a community partner of Tech Goes Home. Our Resource Center Coordinator is a certified trainer for Tech Goes Home allowing computer courses to be offered on-site for women with little or no access to up-to-date technology. As students successfully complete the course requirements they are provided their own laptop computer.

Medical Driven by our commitment to address health disparities experienced by homeless women, WLP provides free on-site access to volunteer doctors and nurses, paid by Health Care Without Walls, five days a week. Guests with chronic health problems rely on their care rather than emergency rooms to help keep them healthy. Our partnership ensures that every woman may benefit from preventative medicine like flu shots and wellness activities. This non-traditional approach to healthcare can reduce anxiety as guests wait to be called in the community dining room where they are free to eat, chat, do laundry, or just relax.

Tech Goes Home

At Women’s Lunch Place, it’s all about dignity, equity and access. We knew if we built a healthy community our guests would be stronger. So, that is exactly what we did. Our intentional approach has resulted in guests obtaining access to services otherwise outside their reach. WLP partnership with Tech Goes Home (TGH) empowers women to overcome barriers and be part of a learning community as they acquire computer skills including keyboarding, word processing, emails, resume writing, and internet access. In 2019, Advocate Maya Dixon became a certified TGH trainer. The incoming skill level of the students enrolled in her first class ranged from none to basic. All of the students were non-native English speakers, struggling with poverty, homelessness and immigration status. One student, bilingual in English and Spanish, got the last seat available and offered to assist others with limited English. With the guidance of Maya and translation services by their fellow student—these women completed 16 hours of instruction. During the second to last class, our student/translator sent a note to Maya apologizing for missing this class. The message included a picture with the caption, “Sorry to miss class, I just became a naturalized citizen!” The class broke into cheers of congratulation and joy for their friend and classmate. One week later, all five students graduated and received their own laptop computer to recognize their achievements.

A gift of dignity... a pathway to safety Two years ago, Kathy was living outside in the cold by the dumpster in the back alley of Women’s Lunch Place. Kathy would walk into WLP with her paper cup, pour a cup of coffee and return to the dumpster area. One of our direct care staff, Bonnie, began to approach her and asked if she would like some breakfast. Kathy said no, she just wanted some coffee. Disheveled with tattered clothes, clearly needing more than a cup of coffee, Bonnie accepted Kathy at her word and quietly kept checking in with her every day. Four months passed and Kathy said, “maybe I will have some breakfast.” Bonnie served her breakfast and Kathy started coming in for breakfast and lunch every day. Another few months passed, with Bonnie now quietly asking if Kathy would like to take a shower. Again, “no thanks.” Bonnie assured Kathy she wouldn’t ask anything of her and just wanted to offer her a shower. After several months, Kathy said, “is that shower still available?” As Kathy slowly began to trust, Bonnie introduced her to a Pine Street outreach worker. While sharing a cup of coffee with Bonnie and Kathy, the outreach worker asked Bonnie if she knew anyone who needed a permanent room. Bonnie said, “I’m not sure...Kathy, do you know anyone who needs a room?” Kathy said, “sometimes I think I do, but mostly not.” Several weeks later Kathy asked if the “nice lady from Pine Street was around.” Fast forward, after completing all the paperwork, Kathy was accepted and moved into her own permanent room at Pine Street Inn. When Bonnie shared this story, it was clear Bonnie had saved Kathy’s life. Bonnie said, “yes, but I think Kathy saved mine too.” Bonnie remembers her own struggles three decades ago as a young, homeless mother. For much of the world, Kathy is rendered invisible; at Women’s Lunch Place, she is a woman who has dignity and is seen and cared for in our world.

Stories

An investment in the future What are you doing for others? When confronted with this most important question, Women’s Lunch Place volunteers, donors and friends provide us with countless examples. Debra and Bill Bulkeley’s commitment to social justice has been a gift to Women’s Lunch Place since 2014. Debra volunteers two days a week in our kitchen, helping prepare and serve meals to more than 250 women each day. Debra and Bill’s commitment of time and treasure has steadily built over the last several years. While attending our signature events, Debra and Bill gained a deeper understanding of our mission and our guests’ challenges. This past year, while attending Spaghetti Dinner, they were absorbed by the presentation by Linda Dorcena Forry, our honoree and former member of the Massachusetts Senate and House. She described an economic cliff on which our insecurely-housed guests are teetering. The loss of a job, a medical emergency, or a mental health crisis may push a woman over the precipice back into homelessness. Linda highlighted the Women’s Lunch Place Eviction Prevention interventions, and she challenged us all to think about our ability to invest. We know it costs $1,600 to prevent eviction versus $10,000 to evict someone. It resonated with Bill and Debra on many levels, particularly since they have read“Evicted,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning book recommended by their daughter that chronicles the traumatic impact of being thrown out of the place where you live. The Bulkeleys and Women’s Lunch Place share the conviction that everyone deserves a home. This belief resulted in the Bulkeleys making a major contribution to support women who are insecurely housed. The impact is real: women will avoid another cliff that would plunge them back into homelessness. We are so grateful for their gifts of time and treasure, and their willingness to share their inspirational story of social justice with our friends.
