From the Head of College Florence Kearney, Head of College & CEO

Welcome to our first issue of Connect for 2022, in which we take the opportunity to provide an update on the happenings and events around the College in Semester 1. We commenced the year at full capacity, with 254 residents plus a waitlist and almost 50 associates in the College community. Women’s College is thriving and our students continue to achieve excellence in their university studies and in every corner of College life. Our new Deputy Head of College – Students, Gayle Harris, joined us at the beginning of the year, followed by our new Dean of Students, Emma Campbell, in April. Gayle and Emma have brought a wealth of experience, knowledge and skills to the Student Services team. Both educators, Gayle has served in a number of senior leadership positions in a variety of schools and Emma holds additional qualifications as a registered psychologist. We also welcomed our new Admissions Officer, Petra Mildenhall, to the Student Services team during the semester. Petra is likewise a great addition to our team, with extensive experience in student enrolment management and processes. Academic results for Semester 2, 2021 were once again outstanding, testament to the focus on scholarship and the strength of the academic support program in place, coupled with the wellbeing program provided to care for student needs. The culture in the College, underpinned by the Wooza sisterhood, is a strong point of difference for us and is central to our vision of empowering women to lead lives of meaning and purpose. The College is in its second year of our Strategic Plan 2021 – 2025, with strategic goals to move Women’s forward across the five key and interrelated areas of Student Experience, Investment in Infrastructure, Connected Wider Community, Financial Sustainability and Brand Awareness. The Strategic Plan can be found on our website (click here to view the plan). We have now commenced the development of a new Master Plan to design the ongoing enhancement of our campus in response to changing student needs. We have enjoyed many special functions and celebrations during the semester, along with a very full program of ICC cultural, sports and community events. In addition, a comprehensive range of Ready to Lead workshops has been provided for the students’ personal growth and development.

O Week proved to be a highlight for First Year residents and associates, and in early March we acknowledged the exceptional academic achievements of our 2021 students at the 2022 Academic Dinner & Alumnae Awards. Dr Kirsty Short, NHMRC Principal Research Fellow from UQ's School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences was our guest speaker and presented our Academic Prizes with UQ’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Debbie Terry AO. Lady Mayoress of Brisbane Nina Schrinner presented the Alumnae Awards. We also gathered with many alumnae from across the generations to celebrate the College’s 108th birthday in March and shared a sell-out Mother & Daughter Dinner in early May.

Unveiling of the first red bench on the UQ Campus and in St Lucia

Our fortnightly Formal Dinners have featured an outstanding array of guest speakers — all alumnae of the College — who have shared their career journeys, insights and advice for students. These amazing women included 2022 Alumna of the Year and world-renowned camel veterinarian, Dr Margie Bale; iSeekPlant's CEO, Sally McPherson; musical theatre performer, Georgina Hopson, who was the recent female lead in Phantom of the Opera on the Sydney Harbour; and Joanne Bergamin, Communications Director at QEM Limited. The Women’s College is proud to have partnered with the Red Rose Foundation and the Brisbane Women’s Club to install the first red bench on the UQ campus and in St Lucia. The Red Bench Project builds a visual reminder to highlight the prevalent issue of domestic violence in all communities. As a College that places importance on women’s issues, we took this step to demonstrate our alignment with this project. There are Red Benches popping up all around Australia, symbolising the strong stance that Australians are taking to address this problem. During May, we also held our first Women’s Industry Night — a networking and career-building experience to connect our students to industry groups and employers — with an outstanding response from across all industries. We can already see our students reaping the benefits of this initiative with the establishment of new contacts and the introduction of a new Career Opportunities webpage on the Student Portal.

Student Life

Gayle Harris, Deputy Head of College – Students

Student Leadership The elected Student Club Executive team and the Resident Assistant team appointed by the College are to be congratulated for their outstanding leadership during Semester 1. Our student leaders have undertaken endless responsibilities from welcoming our Freshers, and convening a wide range of sporting, cultural and community service activities to wellbeing and support roles, all whilst juggling a hectic university schedule.

Health & Wellbeing A one-on-one catch up with each first year student in College has been completed by the Resident Assistants. A series of discussion questions were asked of the students, including their general wellbeing and their commitment to College activities. First year students also had the opportunity to discuss their academic progress and if they had any concerns. Our returning residents were also offered an opportunity to report on their progress at university. Our new Dean of Students, Emma Campbell, is a registered psychologist, and has been available to support students one-to-one with any concerns.

Academic Mentors Facilitated by our Academic Officer Resident Assistant, Lucy Zarew, first year students were teamed up with one of 12 Academic Mentors in Week 3 of Semester 1. Our Academic Mentors are returning students in their second or third year at Women’s, who study a similar degree to their mentee and have achieved outstanding academic results in their course. Academic Mentors check in with freshers to answer any questions about their studies at university throughout the semester. An academic meeting will be scheduled with each first year resident in Semester 2 with the Head of College, Deputy Head of College – Students and Dean of Students. Residents will have the opportunity to discuss their university experience and academic progress for their first semester.

Tutorial Program Women’s has offered academic support this semester from experienced tutors who are mainly alumnae of the College. The students who attend weekly tutorials in specific subjects and sessions for assistance with assignment writing, find this program complements their university studies.

Ready to Lead Workshops This flagship program established in 2012, provides residents and associates with value-add opportunities to assist them in their university studies and chosen career paths. Eight different workshops were offered to students this semester ranging from personal brand and establishing your presence on LinkedIn, to academic meetings, CV writing and brushing up on your interview skills. Our students also had access to a variety of workshops to assist with leadership skills and a networking and career-building experience. The Semester 2 Ready to Lead program is currently being finalised and will be released to students shortly.

2022 Academic Dinner & Alumnae Awards A highlight on the College calendar, the Academic Dinner & Alumnae Awards, is an event where we honour the exceptional scholarship of our students, and acknowledge the finalists and winners of the Alumnae Awards. This year, the event was held on Thursday 10 March, with many students, alumnae and special guests in attendance. Our guest speaker, Professor Kirsty Short (NHMRC Principal Research Fellow, School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, The University of Queensland), delivered an engaging address about her work before presenting Academic Excellence Prizes with Professor Deborah Terry AO (Vice-Chancellor and President, UQ). The College also acknowledged its Academic Mentors, Scholarship recipients and students who achieved a GPA 6.0 or above. Our Alumnae Award finalists were recognised before the winners for 2022 were announced, with awards presented by the Lady Mayoress of Brisbane Nina Schrinner. The Alumnae Awards were launched in 2020 with the vision to celebrate the diverse accomplishments of our alumnae community who are making an impact to their communities and a difference in the world. The Women’s College congratulates all students and alumnae recognised at the 2022 Academic Dinner & Alumnae Awards for their achievements.

Student Leadership Team Report

Lilli Anderson, 2022 Student Club President & Lauren Ward, 2022 Senior Resident Assistant What a start to the year we have had in 2022! There have been a range of sporting and cultural events underway, where Woozas have continued to dominate the ICC with performances of the highest calibre. Despite the challenging start to the year, with COVID-19 still lingering and the unexpected floods, everyone has made the most of their first semester at Women’s for 2022. Notwithstanding some challenging weather, sport well and truly kicked off for the year, having participated in tennis, soccer, table tennis, hockey and AFL, with some outstanding results. Our last sporting event of the semester was the ICC Regatta, with the Women's VIII taking out first place and the College winning rowing overall. Women’s is actively climbing the ICC sporting ladder. Trials for netball, touch and rugby 7’s are also well underway. With Semester 2 getting closer every day, Women’s is giving 100% to bring the cup home. In other news, our cultural Woozas have also been doing us proud. Currently sitting in second place on the ICC cultural ladder, our efforts so far have been incredible. Most notably, our girls have participated in chess, broke to the semi-finals in debating, performed in College Idol, sailed to second in Choralfest, and blitzed Bandfest with an exciting third place. With Dancefest to look forward to in Semester 2, the opportunities to participate are endless. Despite the end of the ICC Community Cup, we have certainly remained worldly Woozas. Our participation in Shave for a Cure, Clean Up Australia Day and assistance with the flood clean-up have been admirable, and everyone is already looking forward to our annual Do It In A Dress fundraiser. A massive shoutout to our Social Convenor, Millie Murray, for planning and throwing a very successful Women’s @ Home for 2022. All our guests spent an amazing night up in the clouds with a great performance from John’s Jazz Band. We know the anticipation is already building for the Women’s Ball and Rush Week Exchange in Semester 2. All-in-all, we could not have asked for a better Semester 1 in 2022. There are so many more special memories to be made and our community spirit has never been stronger.

In April, three of our residents participated in the Soils for Science project, run by The University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB). Resident Assistants Lara-Jane Biggin, Christine Fairweather and Lucy Zarew collected soil samples, which were then sent to the IMB where researchers studied the samples, looking for microbes that could be developed into new antibiotics, anti-fungals and other medicines. Mothers support fundraising efforts

Secure a Plaque

In March, the College held a Champagne Presentation with Bernadette O’Shea, a champagne consultant and educator who has been saluted by France’s finest champagne makers. Some of our mothers of current Woozas supported this event and experienced exquisite aromas and textures while learning about champagne house styles. Proceeds from this fundraising event will support scholarships for students residing at The Women’s College.

Thank you to the many families who have contributed to the refurbishment of The College Playhouse by purchasing a named plaque for their daughter, which will be installed on our new auditorium chairs. Your help will be greatly appreciated by past, current and future students of The Women’s College. There is still time to secure a plaque and support the project with a tax-deductible donation of $200. Further details are available on our website; click here to go to the webpage.

Acknowledging our multi-generational families A record number of mothers and their daughters attended the Mother & Daughter Dinner in May. One of the highlights of this special event was a Q&A panel of alumnae — mothers and grandmothers of current daughters — who shared their memories of life at The Women’s College. Our Panellists included: • Dr Sallyanne Atkinson AO (1960) | Grandmother of Maggie Forster (Second Year) • Dr Cate Campbell (1985 – 1988) | Mother of Jillian Campbell (First Year) & Daughter of Beverley Higgins (1962 – 1964) • Beverley Higgins (1962 – 1964) | Mother of Cate Campbell (1985 – 1988) & Grandmother of Jillian Campbell (First Year) • Courtney Petersen (1988) | Mother of Matisse Black (Second Year) & Persia Black (Associate) This year, we also had grandmothers, mothers and their daughters — 27 in all — acknowledged as multi-generational families during a special badge presentation. Just over $3,300 was raised from a major raffle to support the Alumnae Awards Scholarship, which will assist a current resident of the College in offsetting residential fees. We thank our sponsor, The Calile Hotel, for generously donating this wonderful prize.

Career opportunities The inaugural Women’s Industry Night, held in May, showcased 20 of Queensland’s leading organisations in a mini exhibition. Companies offered valuable advice to help students kick-start their careers, learn about career pathways and gain a deeper understanding of industries. Round table discussions were held in conjunction with the exhibition, with topics ranging from careers in allied health, architecture, finance and STEM, to the importance of having a mentor and using an internship to your advantage, to name a few. As a result of this initiative, the College has developed a Career Opportunities web page on the Student Portal, where students can access work experience, internships and jobs on offers. Congratulations to our students who have secured internships and work experience from this initiative.

Operations Update Jeff Sipek, Director of Operations

6. AV equipment upgrade to the Council Room, Chislehurst Room, Dining Hall and College Playhouse – completion due in July 2022. The College is implementing a new 10-Year Master Plan and has appointed Macksey Rush Architects to prepare the document for the long-term vision of the development of Women’s. The brief included proposed new facilities including: • a limited number of additional student rooms; • additional student areas, including study spaces, a gymnasium and recreation rooms; • a function space that will serve College needs and provide an additional income stream; and • additional staff work areas and offices. A number of these proposed facilities could be accommodated within existing spaces that will be refurbished. Other spaces may potentially require the construction of a new building.

2021 saw the release of the College Strategic Plan 2021 – 2025 with priorities being given towards investment in infrastructure with the upgrade and refurbishment of assets. In preparing the 2022 budget, a key focus was to continue the upgrade of facilities and the integration of new technology (IT and AV) into existing infrastructure, prioritising a list of upgrades after reviewing the five-year long-term maintenance plan. Major projects planned for 2022 include: 1. Replacement of the Piddington Wing fire doors and smoke detectors – completed January 2022. 2. Replacement of the New Wing roof – completed February 2022. 3. Upgrade of the Upper Cuppaidge and Lower & Upper Bourne Bathrooms – completed in February 2022. 4. Upgrade of the fob entry door security system – completed February 2022. 5. Replacement of The College Playhouse seating and carpets – completion due in July 2022.
