From the Head of College Florence Kearney, Head of College & CEO

Heartiest congratulations to our graduands and their families! It is an extraordinary moment to witness our daughters complete their degrees and step into their futures as university graduates. We trust that our graduating students will cherish their College experience and reap the benefits of the friendships they have made and the connections they have developed during their time at Women’s. I sincerely thank and congratulate the outgoing student leaders, led impressively by Noor Kahloon, Student Club President, Phoebe Parker, Senior Resident Assistant (SRA), supported by Ashleigh Kane, Vice President, and Sherri Green, Deputy SRA, for their excellent leadership of the College this year. Congratulations also to the incoming Student Leadership Team (SLT) for 2022, to be led by Lilli Anderson, Student Club President, and Lauren Ward, Senior Resident Assistant, supported by Isabelle Coleman, Vice President, and Laura Carniel, Deputy SRA. Our incoming SLT will spend four days at the end of this semester planning for next year and the O-Week program to welcome our new residents and associates in February 2022.

Welcome to our final parent communiqué for 2021. As another successful year comes to a close, I pay tribute to all members of the Women’s College community for all that has been accomplished in this living and learning community this year. Enrolments continue to be in high demand for 2022, with the College at full capacity to commence the year, testament to the vibrant and supportive culture at Women’s. There is something special about the Wooza sisterhood … women supporting women, empowering, embracing, respecting one another, working together to achieve goals and ensure they Never leave a Wooza behind. It was a delight to meet many parents and families at Welcome Day back in February as our freshers arrived at College, anticipating new beginnings with university studies and College life. We have also enjoyed hosting a number of scheduled parent events this year, culminating in the celebratory Valedictory Dinner with our Third Year parents a few weeks ago. Our families are very important to us, so we are pleased to share these events and stay in touch regularly through our parent communiqués. Social media also provides a useful avenue to follow the vibrancy of College life online.

Semester 2 Snapshot We farewell Deputy Head of College & Dean of Students, Sally Northcroft, who has made the decision to return to the school environment. Sally has accepted the position of Director of Cocurriculum at St Leonard’s College in Melbourne from the beginning of next year. On behalf of staff, students and families, I thank Sally for her tireless service to Women’s College over the past three years and congratulate her on all she has achieved during her tenure. Sally has been an integral member of the executive team in leading the College through some significant challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic in recent times. I wish her well in the next chapter of her career. We extend our best wishes to our students and their families for the festive season and look forward to another happy and prosperous year for everyone in 2022.

Student Life

Sally Northcroft, Deputy Head of College & Dean of Students After a five-week mid-year break, some of our residents were still dealing with changing border restrictions and a variety of changes within Queensland. It was wonderful to see our Woozas back from their break, ready to take on all that Semester 2 had to offer. Prior to the return of the main student cohort, a ‘first of its kind’ aspirational leadership retreat was held at the College. The retreat was held on the weekend students returned and was limited to 30 participants. This was a very successful event in which representatives from NAAUC – the National Association of Australian University Colleges (both of whom are alumna) – ran programs on leadership styles and the role of a student leader within the College context. In the afternoon, students were given the opportunity to work in groups on pitching an idea to the Student Club Executive. The group voted on the presentations and the winning pitch was then presented to the Student Leaders the following day. The leadership retreat was capped off with a practice networking event, which coupled our aspiring leaders with alumnae student leaders from the previous two years. The Student Leadership Team (SLT) also participated in a one-day retreat that included leadership training, bonding, and planning prior to the start of Semester 2. The president (and alumna) of NAAUC delivered sessions on how to manage conflict, goal setting and working towards a common goal. These sessions were very well received and provided a platform for motivating and inspiring our leaders to remain committed to their goals for the remainder of the year. The first week of Semester 2 was full of a variety of welcome back activities, ranging from welcome back drinks on the deck to a night in to pamper and relax. We were thrilled to welcome eight new residents in Semester 2; and the Commencement Formal Dinner provided an opportunity for them to sign the College register in front of their peers. With a full College, the atmosphere was one of positivity and excitement. Many students formed strong friendships and others have fulfilled their goal of stepping outside their comfort zone to meet new people and experience new opportunities. Much of this was provided through activities organised within the College such as Ready to Lead events, small and large social events, sport, co-curricular and community events. There is always something to get involved in during the semester. The snap lockdown on 31 July resulted in a shift in the focus of college activities and wellbeing. An enforced lockdown created some concern for the students, and for those required to move into quarantine. All the processes for student care and support were put in place to ensure that everyone was cared for in the best possible way. From daily checkins to outstanding food service to many Zoom calls, the students in quarantine made it through, ready to engage with life with a whole new perspective.

Throughout the semester, all students were given the opportunity to meet one-on-one with the College staff to discuss their university results for Semester 1 2021 and their aspirations for Semester 2 and beyond. These meetings provided both the College staff and the students an opportunity to acknowledge their academic achievements and to discuss their involvement in College life. The final stretch of student activities for the semester reflected how much energy remained following a very full and ever-changing co-curricular calendar. Fortunately, the reduction in COVID-19 restrictions in the lead up to mid-semester break created opportunities to complete the ICC sporting and cultural competitions. With the success of the annual Women’s College Ball in late August, followed by outstanding sporting and cultural performances, there was much to entertain everyone whilst they continued to pursue academic success. Much of the success of our students is dependent on their connection to their peers and the ability to not only socialise, but to engage in a multitude of activities that improve personal and community wellbeing, a sense of belonging and a determined optimism for the remainder of the semester. ICC sport, cultural and community events wrapped up just before mid-semester break and Women’s has had some outstanding performances. Of note is our Basketball, Athletic and Rowing teams placing second in ICC sport. After Dancefest was cancelled in 2020, our 100-strong cast placed third overall in the 2021 ICC competition, much to the delight of our whole College. The community engagement in the inter-college 'Do it in a Dress' fundraiser included over 80 residents and collectively they have raised over $27,000 for this cause. Formal Dinners continued with a strong representation of the College community throughout the semester. Students have enjoyed the connections and friendships, as well as the insight from guest speakers at these events. These dinners are vital to continuing the tradition of community, excellence and education within a residential college; and they provide a place for us all to share a meal together and take time out of busy schedules to build on experiences with each other. It has been an enormous year, not only for every Wooza but especially for the student leaders in their roles as they have dealt with lockdowns, restrictions and the challenge to empower each individual to feel valued, connected and respected through all the many pastoral care, leadership, sporting, social and cultural activities. The SLT are the true heroines of 2021 and I am so proud of them for persisting through many challenges and also so grateful to them for their endless passion and dedication to The Women’s College.

Student Leadership Team Report

Noor Kahloon, 2021 Student Club President & Phoebe Parker, 2021 Senior Resident Assistant What a year 2021 was. We finished off the year strongly with our cultural and sporting endeavours, and showed off our prowess. Coming third overall in sport was an amazing feat from our girls, and tying fifth overall in the cultural cup was amazing for our 2021 cultural girls. Coming first overall in Soccer, and following this with lots of close seconds and thirds in our sporting competitions, proved to our girls that we do have what it takes. We know all the Woozas coming back in 2022 are excited to return ready to go, especially with a new cohort of First Years coming in hot. Dancefest 2021 was amazing, with the Women’s girls placing third. Many girls proudly wore their school dresses for the month of September, raising a large sum of just over $27,000 for 'Do it in a Dress'. We are so proud of all the wonderful girls who participated. Ball and recovery 2021 was an amazing hit, with Eliza White planning an exceptional night of drinks, dancing and fun! The Student Club Executive also introduced a new event called Pink Ladies Day, raising money for the Pink Ribbon Foundation. We are so happy to have been the SLT for 2021, and we cannot wait to see where the SLT continues in the years to come. Signing off for one last time, Phoebe & Noor.

Advancement Update

Susan McGinley, Engagement & Marketing Manager

Impact of Philanthropy Our fundraising efforts have increased by almost 60% since 2020. Together with The University of Queensland’s matching gifts, we have raised almost $250,000 in gifts and pledges and the number of gifts from donors has increased by almost 80% this year. Thank you to our parents and students who have contributed to the College in 2021. This is a remarkable outcome, with 55 students funded by philanthropy through bursaries, scholarships and academic prizes.

(Note: excludes data from UQ Giving Day and the new UQ matched scholarships.)

New Bursaries, Scholarships and Prizes on Offer We plan to award a new bursary – the Dr Maureen Aitken Undergraduate Scholarship – in partnership with UQ in 2022. We extend our appreciation to the many families who made a voluntary contribution to our bursary program to assist students in financial need. We are also excited to announce that three new scholarships – an additional Judith McCulloch Academic Scholarship, the Mary Wooza Year Fund and the Alumnae Awards Scholarship – will be offered for the first time to students in 2022. Applications for 2022 Scholarships close on Friday 17 December. Further details are available here – www.womens.uq.edu.au/bursaries_ scholarships Two new prizes will be awarded in 2022 and presented at the annual Academic Dinner in March. The new Sallyanne Atkinson Leadership Prize will be awarded to a resident who has raised her profile and standing within the College community, demonstrating outstanding community service and/ or continuous and significant contributions in a leadership role. Established by the 1985 Year Group, the new Suellen Topfer Academic Prize will be awarded to a student who achieves outstanding academic results in a Bachelor of Communications majoring in journalism or a related field.

Farewell and Welcome We extend a sad farewell to our valedicts, graduands and their families, however the College experience does not end. As a former resident or associate, your daughter will be part of The Women’s College global alumnae community and have access to a range of ongoing activities including our career mentoring program. It is a great way to stay in touch with young alumnae and continue to remain engaged in the life of the College.

Father & Daughter Drinks The inaugural Father & Drinks were held on Friday 3 September, with many fathers travelling from regional areas to be with their daughters for this special event. Some of the highlights of the evening included a performance by our Bandfest students and a Q&A panel of fathers facilitated by Head of College & CEO, Flo Kearney. We thank Stuart Garraway (father of Third Year Resident, Zoe Garraway), Noel Ward (father of Second Year Resident, Lauren Ward) and Mark Dempsey (father of First Year Resident, Gabby Dempsey), for sharing some valuable points on the subject of networking and delivering a message to ensure students make the most of all opportunities while at Women’s.

Finance Matters

Operations Update

2021 will be remembered as a year of snap lockdowns, face masks, Zoom meetings and copious amounts of online shopping. For me, there have been two student events that stood out this year, not because they were particularly good, but because of how they gave me goosebumps and filled my heart with so much pride – the Grace College Fresher Dance and the performance by Union College at Dancefest. On both occasions, our Wooza girls cheered and encouraged their fellow students and competitors. You should be proud of the young ladies you have raised. For those students returning in 2022, please note that a non-refundable deposit of $1,500 was due on 15 October 2021 to secure a place for next year. Term 1 invoices will be issued during the first week of December and are payable by Monday 3 January 2022. We understand that this is a challenging year for many families and offer a payment plan option on request. If you would like more information regarding a payment plan, please email e.geringer@womens.uq.edu.au. The College has almost reached full capacity for next year, and with only a few spaces left, we would like to continue to reward residents and their families who promote the College with a $500 referral fee. This fee will be paid to current residents in the form of a fee deduction from Term 2 fees for every successful referral. For a referral to be successful, the prospective resident must: • be offered a place at The Women’s College (i.e. meet our selection criteria), • confirm their acceptance by signing a 34-week residency agreement and pay their deposit, and • identify you as the person who referred them during their interview. The referral fee is not applicable to siblings, where the 7.5% discount applies and is not exchangeable for cash. The College has also partnered with St Leo’s College and will offer a 3.75% discount to a current resident with a sibling at St Leo’s next year. We look forward to having many of the residents back at College next year and for those valedictorians, we hope to see them at our Young Alumnae events.

We all hoped that 2021 would see things get back to normal! But what most of us have probably not realised – yet will soon – is that things won’t be going back to normal anytime soon! COVID-19 continues to impact our daily lives and I wanted to thank the entire College community for their ongoing support in helping us navigate through this ever-changing environment. One thing that is normal at College in 2021 was the “full house sign.” The energy this provides to the day-to-day running of the College gives staff a real buzz! Whether it is the students queuing up for meals or discussing with our admin office staff what they are going to be wearing to an event or just chatting with the domestic cleaners, this is the normal College life! Staff have been very busy throughout 2021 maintaining both the internal and external facilities of the College. They all take great pride in their roles and appreciate the feedback received from everyone. In my June communique article, I spoke of the focus of the Strategic Plan 2021–2025 with the key focus being our investment in infrastructure with priorities being given towards the upgrade and refurbishment of assets. In July, we commenced the AV upgrade throughout the College, which will include four main areas: the Council Room, Chislehurst Room, Harriet Marks Dining Hall and College Playhouse. The Council Room was completed in August, including the following works and received positive feedback: • Ceiling-mounted short-throw projector • Audio system with speakers • Video and audio conferencing • Fixed wall-mounted screen Completion of the other rooms is expected by the end of 2021. During the mid-year break, three communal bathrooms were upgraded with three more to be completed over the upcoming Christmas vacation period. Major projects planned in 2022 include: • New Wing roof replacement • Upgrades to Upper Cuppaidge, and Lower and Upper Bourne bathrooms • Upgrading of doors in Piddington Wing • Upgrade of carpet and seating in the College Playhouse auditorium To those students returning in 2022, we look forward to working with you all in continuing the strong bond that exists within our community.
