GENOCIDE

MEMORIAL

I will not attempt to explain the political and social backround to the genoside in Rwanda. But like all genocides it was carefully planned and in this case it was devastatingly brutal. The objective was the anialation of the Tutsi tribe by the Hutus. Women and children were their primary targets. I’d forgotton how terrible it was. It’s impossible to imagine or understand. On 6th April 1994, President Juvenal Habyarimana and President Cyrien Ntaryamira of Burundi where flying into Kigali airport when their plane was shot down ( probably by Hutu extremists ). They were both killed. Within an hour, at 21.15, roadblocks had been set up throughout Kigali and houses were being searched. Shots were heard. Death lists had been prepared in advance. The killing had begun. The murderers used machetes, clubs, guns and any blunt tool they could find to inflict as much pain on their victims as possible. No Tutsi was exempt. In 100 days, 1,000,000 people were murdered, 10,000 each day, 400 every hour, 7 each minute, The genocidaires had been more successful in their brutal killings than anyone would have dared to believe. Rwanda was dead.

Roadblocks were a principal tool of population control . Any Tutsi who tried to pass was humiliated, murdered, raped, and dumped by the roadside.
