How to select your ventilation system

Installing a ventilation system has many benefits to your home and daily lives. The ‘average’ family produces approximately 15 litres, or 27 pints, of moisture per day and with so much extra moisture in the air that can lead to damp and mould, installing the right bathroom ventilation is a must.

Step 1 – Choosing your fan

Things to consider when choosing your bathroom fan:

1. Location – will you need to fit this to the ceiling or wall? Tip: Don’t forget to check the fan’s IP rating to identify the safest area for installation (see our zoning graphic for more information on page 277). 2. Noise – all fans make noise, but after years of research our preferred suppliers have created a range of silent fans to help reduce the noise levels so your days and nights are uninterrupted. 3. Features – with so many options on the market today, choose the fan with the right features to help make operating them more convenient and efficient. Look out for; integrated lighting, humidity/motion sensors, adjustable timers and app control.

Step 2 – Select your ducting

How and where the fan is installed will determine what ducting you need.

Rigid When building from scratch Flexible Short duct runs or attaching rigid duct to the fan Kits A “through the wall” installation

Step 3 – Select your grille

Choose a colour and style of grille to suit the exterior of your house.

Colours Brown, white and terracotta Fixed Louvre Suitable for most applications Cowl For use where back draughts could be a problem

Why ventilate?

The health of your home can impact the health of your family. That’s why it really benefits to understand the importance of indoor air and how it affects your home environment and ultimately, your health. It’s not something we pay much attention to day-to-day but our homes can become up to 50x more polluted than outside.

Everyday activities such as bathing, cooking, showering and even breathing generate moisture in the home which can lead to mould growth. In a bid to make houses more efficient and to lower energy bills, steps are taken to improve the airtightness of a home, but this means the home cannot breathe and the moisture-laden air can’t escape. As a result there is a build-up of water vapour causing condensation and increasing the risk of mould occurring.

The key to preventing mould is simple: moisture control. It’s important to keep your property correctly ventilated to stop condensation from forming. Proper ventilation controls moisture and therefore inhibits mould growth by preventing condensation from forming. This in turn helps to improve indoor air quality as well as maintain the fabric of the property.

Building Regulations

Changes to Building Regulations in recent years has led to an increased demand for low-carbon, energy efficient ventilation solutions and Xpelair’s range now includes many low carbon, low energy use extract fans, Mechanical Extract Ventilation (MEV) and Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) systems for various applications.

Given the changes in Building Regulations leading to homes becoming unreasoningly energy efficient and sealed-up, the requirement for adequate ventilation has never been higher. Failure to ventilate can result in the build-up of damp, moisture and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) which all have significant health risks. That is why it is key to be able to offer a range of ventilation solutions to protect both a building’s fabric and the health of the people in it.
