A quick chat with....

Jimmy White

How many tournaments are you playing on the Seniors tour this year and where does it take you in the world? Its growing massively. I'm playing 6 events this year , with the tour going to Hong Kong, Canada and Australia to name a few. With 200k in prize money, its been a real revelation Obviously you are playing to win, but has playing on the Seniors tour given you an opportunity to go out, entertain and just enjoy playing snooker, rather than having to deal with the stress of having to win a major tournament? I enjoy playing all snooker, I’m still on the main tour and still competing hard. I don’t enjoy the travelling as much any more but its either this or go and play bad golf somewhere. What’s the camaraderie like with the players and do you get to spend more time with them now, and get to know them better, than when you were competing against them 20 years ago? Yes, we generally stay together on this tour and there is always a few laughs and reminiscing. Any of your fellow competitors have any annoying habits you don’t mind telling us about? That fellow Hendry used to have an annoying habit of beating me but I'm getting a bit of payback now. Finally, with a big year ahead, who is your ‘One to Watch’ In 2020? On the main tour some of the Chinese kids are frightening, Ronnie is still the man to beat which means he can stay away from this tour for a while!

Affectionately known as 'The Peoples Champion', Jimmy White has been entertaining audience across the world with his uncompromising attacking style for 40 years. The six-time World Championship finalist, and winner of 10 ranking events, is back in Plymouth for the ROKit UK Senior British Open, held at the Pavilions on April 3rd- 4th. Craig Maplesden caught up with 'The Whirlwind' to talk about his memories of playing in Plymouth, being on tour with so many familar faces and the one he is happy isn't old enough to join the tour just yet. How much are you looking forward to coming to Plymouth to be part of the ROKit Senior Snooker British Open? It's such a great city and venue with a good history of snooker. The westcountry has always produced great players and I used to love coming down for the British open each year at the Pavilions. Is the rivalry between the players still the same as it was when you were competing on the main tour? Make no mistake, we've all got professional pride and in some ways you never know how many opportunities you will have to go toe to toe with these guys again. So in many ways, the rivalry is greater.

10 woinplymouth

What are your memories of playing at the Pavilions and is it good to see the event attract a new legion of younger fans to snooker? I always remember there being good, knowledgeable crowdd eho know their snooker. it is also good to see some younger faces in the crowds as well at these events Do you get much time to see the city while you are here or are you tied to the practice table? It depends if I get knocked out early or not, so hopefully I won’t see anything of it!

The ROKIt World Seniors Snooker British Open is held at Plymouth Pavilions from April 3rd- 4th. Tickets are avialable to order on the website: www.theticketstore.co.uk Under 14 to be accompanied by an adult over 18 at all times.

Ed Byrne

If I'm honest

A household name teetering on the brink of national treasure status, award-winning comedian Ed Byrne enjoys worldwide acclaim for his stand-up. With 25 years under his belt, Ed has parlayed his onstage success into a variety of notable television appearances. A regular on Mock The Week and The Graham Norton Show, Ed has recently co-presented Dara & Ed’s Big Adventure and its follow-up Dara & Ed’s Road To Mandalay, and managed not to disgrace himself on Top Gear or whilst tackling one of The World’s Most Dangerous Roads. As a semiprofessional hill-walker himself and fully paid-up humanist, he also brought a refreshing warmth and honesty to BBC2’s recent hit The Pilgrimage. But the Irishman is still best-known and best appreciated for his stand-up performances. A quarter of a century at the comedic coal-face has equipped Ed with a highly evolved story-telling ability and a silky mastery of his craft. Yet his wit, charm and self-deprecatory observational humour is often underpinned by a consistently hilarious vitriol and sense of injustice at a world that seems to be spinning ever more rapidly out of control. Having recently hit a new peak with shows such as the sublime Spoiler Alert and reflective Outside, Looking In, which explored the minefield that is modern parenting and a generational sense of entitlement, Ed’s new show If I’m Honest digs ever deeper into a father’s sense of responsibility, what it means to be a man in 2019, and whether he possesses any qualities whatsoever worth passing on to his two sons. Occasionally accused of whimsy, If I’m Honest is a show with a seriously steely core. Gender politics, for example, is something Ed readily engages with – deploying his customary comedic zeal. ‘I’ll admit that there are things where men get a raw deal,’ he says. ‘We have higher suicide rates, and we tend not to do well in divorces, but representation in action movies is not something we have an issue with. It was Mad Max: Fury Road that kicked it all off, even though nobody complained about Ripley in Alien or Sarah Connor in Terminator 2. Of course, social media means this stuff gets broadcast far and wide in an instant, which emboldens people. ‘The problem with men’s rights activists is that it’s not about speaking up for men’s rights, it’s about hating women. If you’re a men’s rights activist, you’re not going to care about the fact that there’s an all-female Ghostbusters remake. That’s nothing to do with men’s rights or female entitlement. That’s everything to do with being, well, a whiny baby.’ As ever, Ed manages to provoke without being overly polemical, a balancing act that only someone of his huge experience can really pull off. ‘I did stuff about Trump and the Pizzagate right wing conspiracy,’ he says, ‘and a couple of the reviewers said, “Oh, I would have liked to have watched a whole show of this”. And I think, ‘well you might have, but the average person who comes to see me would not like to see that’. I like to make a point or get something off my chest, or perhaps I’m talking about something that’s been on my mind, but the majority of stuff is just to get laughs.

joke makes a good point, I think people enjoy it. It’s the difference between having a steak and eating a chocolate bar.’ Ed, who broke through in the mid-1990s when the New Lad became a genuine cultural phenomenon, doesn’t want to submit to any unnecessary revisionism, but admits that if the times have changed, he has changed with them. He reflects a little ruefully on one of his most famous jokes. ‘There’s an attitude towards Alanis Morrisette in the opening of that routine that I’m no longer comfortable with, where I call her a moaning cow and a whiny bint… slagging off the lyrics of the song is fine, but there’s a tone in the preamble that I wouldn’t write today.’ The new show also takes his natural tendency towards self-deprecation to unexpected extremes. ‘I do genuinely annoy myself,’ Ed concedes. ‘But the thing of your children being a reflection of you, gives you an opportunity to build something out of the best of yourself only for you to then see flashes of the worst of yourself in them. It’s a wake-up call about your own behaviour.’ When I challenge him over the degree of self-loathing he displays, he disagrees. ‘Self-aggrandising humour is a lot harder to pull off than self-deprecating humour,’ he insists. ‘A lot of people get really annoyed when Ricky Gervais is self-congratulatory. I always find it very funny when he accepts awards and does so in the most big-headed way possible. I think it’s a trickier type of humour to pull off, talking yourself up in that way. ‘So no, I don’t think I’m being massively hard on myself. The fact is when you’re the bloke who is standing on the stage with the microphone, commanding an audience’s attention, you’re in a very elevated position anyway.’ That said, If I’m Honest brilliantly elucidates the frustration that arrives in middle age – and lives up to its title. ‘I’m bored looking for things, I’m bored of trying to find stuff, because I can never find it, and it is entirely my fault,’ Ed says. ‘Nobody’s hiding my stuff from me. Although my wife did actually move my passport on one occasion’. He insists that, while the show might have mordant and occasionally morbid aspects, it’s also not without its quietly triumphant moments. ‘I thought I was being quite upbeat talking about the small victories,’ he says. ‘You know, finding positivity in being able to spot when a cramp was about to happen in your leg and dealing with it before it does. I was very happy with myself about that.’ Age, it seems, has not withered him. Especially now that he’s figured out how to head off ailments before they become a problem. ‘You see comics who are my age and older but are still retaining a level of “cool” and drawing a young crowd. I can’t deny that I’m quite envious of that. But there’s also something very satisfying about your audience growing old with you.’ Ed Byrne comes to Plymouth Pavilions on 28th March at 8pm. Tickets are available via the website: www.theticketstore.co.uk

‘People who come to see me are not political activists necessarily, they’re regular folk. If you can make a point to them, in between talking about your struggles with aging, or discussing your hernia operation or whatever it is, you can toss in something that does give people pause as regards to how men should share the household chores.’ He continues, ‘It’s not that I feel a responsibility, I think it just feels more satisfying when you’re doing it, and it feels more satisfying when people hear it. cake be brought to her room during around 4 in the afternoon. Later Anna Maria would invite friends to join her in her rooms at Woburn Abbey during the summer and continued the practice when she returned to London, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for "tea and a walk in the fields". Other social hostesses quickly picked up on the idea and the practice became respectable enough to move it into the drawing room. Before long, all of fashionable society was sipping tea and nibbling cakes in the middle of the afternoon. A traditional Afternoon Tea

Anna Maria Russell, the 7th Duchess of Woburn

How a Duchess turned a 'sinking feeling' into a fashionable pursuit We have a lot to thank Catherine de Braganza for, for bringing tea to England as part of her dowry. But, there is another lady to thank when it comes to one of the nations tea 'obsessions'. During the mid-nineteenth century it was usual for people to take only two main meals a day, breakfast and dinner. The Blue Drawing Room at Woburn Abbey

Dinner was a more formal affair and would typically occur around 8 o'clock in the evening, thus leaving a long period of time between meals. In order to suppress 'that sinking feeling' during the late afternoon, Anna Maria Russell, the 7th Duchess of Woburn asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter and

During the late nineteenth century, afternoon tea became extremely popular with the upperclass and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats. Traditionally, the upper classes would serve a 'low' or 'afternoon' tea around four o'clock. The middle and lower classes would have a more substantial 'high' tea later in the day, at five or six o'clock, in place of a late dinner. The names derive from the height of the tables on which the meals are served, high tea being served at the dinner table. A traditional afternoon tea consists of a selection of dainty sandwiches, scones served with clotted cream and preserves. Cakes and pastries are also served. Tea grown in India or Ceylon is poured from silver tea pots into delicate bone china cups. In recent years, the addition to the menu of a glass of Champagne or Prosecco has increased its popularity. To experience the best of the afternoon tea tradition, indulge yourself with a trip to one of our finest hotels and restaurants who will be more than happy to offer you a special 'afternoon tea' experience. We have selected a few of the cities best to whet your appitite as well as offer up some recipe ideas for you to try at home.

his best to counter the growth of tea with several acts forbidding its sale, but these laws became so unpopular that they were impossible to enforce. Despite this early setback, governments continued to try and control, or at least profit from the popularity of tea in Britain. Tea had become so popular in the mid 18th century that duty had reached an absurd 119%, resulting in a new industry – tea smuggling.

It wasn't until the mid-18th century that the East India Company capitalise on tea's popularity bringing it to these shores. As large ships from Holland and Scandinavian countries reached the shores of Britain, smugglers (often local fishermen) would unload the tea into smaller vessels and sneak them inland through underground passages and hidden paths to special hiding places. One of the best hiding places was in the local parish church! Even smuggled tea was expensive, however, and therefore extremely profitable, so many smugglers began to adulterate the tea with other substances, such as willow, liquorice, and sloe leaves. Used tea leaves were also re-dried and added to fresh leaves.

Catherine de Braganza

How your morning 'cuppa' became a national obsession Often described as the most quintessential of English drinks, the custom of drinking tea was a relative late comer to British shores in the mid 17th century. Origins of our nations favourite drink date back to the third millennium BC, and it took until 1560 for tea to reach Europe, by way of Venice, from its Asian origins. Some 50 years later in 1610, Portuguese and Dutch traders became the first to import tea to Europe, with regular shipments. Despite this being a popular past time in these countries, it wasn't until the mid-18th century that the East India Company capitalise on tea's popularity bringing it to these shores. It may pain a devoted tea drinker to know that we need to thank coffee houses, and one on particular, for introducing tea to England. Thomas Garraway was a coffee house owner

Finally, in 1784 William Pitt the Younger introduced the Commutation Act, which dropped the tax on tea from 119% to 12.5%, effectively ending smuggling. Adulteration remained a problem, though, until the Food and Drug Act of 1875 brought in stiff penalties for the practice.

Tea drinking became even more popular throughout England in the 1660's due to the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza's (wife of King Charles II) love of tea.

By the early 1830's the East India Company was given a monopoly on the tea trade. Previously, it would take ships almost a year to make the unrelenting journey from Asia back to our shores. One of the first things this forward thinking company did was to introduce the first "clippers", to cut down journey times. These streamlined, tall-masted vessels cut through the oceans at the speed of todays ocean liners. The most famous of the clipper ships was the Cutty Sark, built in 1868 in Dumbarton. It only made the tea run eight times, but for its era it was a remarkable ship.

Popularity grew quickly in the coffee houses, and by 1700 over 500 of them sold tea. Not everyone, however, was pleased to see this particular drink thrive. With tavern owners witnessing a drop in the sales of ale and gin, coupled with the government of the day seeing a drop in revenues from the taxes earned on liquor sales, it wasn't long before a taxation was placed on tea. Ironically, Charles II did

Today, there are 51 million tea drinkers in the UK with the tea industry worth some 530 million pounds. Black tea accounts for 450 million pounds worth of trade, followed by fruit and herbal teas coming in at 78.7 million pounds. With these new tea products gaining ground as consumers seek the health and wellness benefits, the nations love of tea drinking shows no sign of declining.

Chocloate Reflection Cake A dazzling cake that's perfect for any celebration. The cake itself is easy to make, so you can put your efforts into the icing glaze. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/ Gas 4. Line the base of two 20cm/8in loosebottomed cake tins with baking paper and grease the sides with baking spread.

Ingredients

50g/1¾oz cocoa powder 6 tbsp boiling water 3 large free-range eggs 50ml/2fl oz full-fat milk 175g/6oz self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 100g/3½oz baking spread, plus extra for greasing 275g/9¾oz caster sugar

For the icing

7 sheets (11g) leaf gelatine 225g/8oz caster sugar 75g/2¾oz cocoa powder 5 tbsp double cream 50g/1¾oz dark chocolate, chopped into chunks 2 tbsp apricot jam, sieved

To decorate

300ml/10fl oz double cream, whipped until stiff peaks form 10 strawberries

32 woinplymouth

Method:

Sieve the cocoa powder into a large mixing bowl. Add the water and stir until you have a smooth paste. Add the remaining ingredients. Whisk together using an electric hand whisk until light and fluffy. Spoon into the two tins and level the tops. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until well risen and coming away from the sides of the tins. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. To make the icing, put the gelatine leaves in a shallow bowl of cold water for 5 minutes until soft. Put the sugar, cocoa powder, cream and 125ml/4fl oz water into a saucepan over a medium heat. Stir until melted, then bring up to the boil and stir until smooth. Remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate. Leave to cool for 5 minutes. Squeeze any liquid from the gelatine leaves and stir into the chocolate mixture until dissolved. Pour through a sieve into a bowl and leave to cool and thicken in the fridge for about an hour, until it reaches the consistency of thick mayonnaise. Slice each cake in half horizonatally. Put one cake half on a wire rack and smooth a layer of whipped cream on top. Continue this process so you have four layers of cake and three layers of cream. Press the cakes down between

each layer so the cream comes right to the edges and the cakes are level at the sides. Smooth around the edges with a palette knife so the excess cream very lightly covers the sides and gives a smooth edge. Gently warm the apricot jam and brush lightly over the cake, covering the sides and top. Chill in the fridge for 15 minutes. Put about 100ml/3½fl oz of the icing in a heatproof bowl and gently melt over a pan of simmering water. Dip half of each strawberry in the melted icing. Put on baking paper to set. Once the cake has finished cooling in the fridge, transfer to a wire cooling rack placed on a large baking tray to catch any excess glaze as you pour it over the cake. Pour the remaining icing over the cake and smooth over the top and sides. Be very careful doing this, you want a smooth shiny icing. Leave for an hour or so to set. Arrange the glazed strawberries around the bottom edge of the cake. Source: Mary Berry Everyday. Published by BBC Books. Hardcover RRP: £ 23.99

Classic Victoria sponge sandwich recipe Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Butter two 20cm sandwich tins and line with non-stick baking paper.

For the sponge

200g caster sugar 200g softened butter 4 eggs, beaten 200g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 tbsp milk

For the filling

100g butter, softened 140g icing sugar, sifted drop vanilla extract (optional) half a 340g jar good-quality strawberry jam icing sugar, to decorate

Method:

Paul Hollywood's

In a large bowl, beat 200g caster sugar, 200g softened butter, 4 beaten eggs, 200g self-raising flour, 1 tsp baking powder and 2 tbsp milk together until you have a smooth, soft batter.

Lemon drizzle slices

Divide the mixture between the tins, smooth the surface with a spatula or the back of a spoon.

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/ gas 4. Line a 20 x 20cm square baking tin with baking parchment.

Bake for about 20 mins until golden and the cake springs back when pressed.

For the cake

Turn onto a cooling rack and leave to cool completely.

70g softened unsalted butter 120g caster sugar 2 medium eggs 140g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder finely grated zest 1 lemon 1 tbsp lemon curd 2 tbsp full-fat milk

For the drizzle topping 30g granulated sugar juice 1 lemon

For the feather icing

250g icing sugar 3 tbsp water splash of yellow food colouring

Method:

Using an electric whisk, beat the butter and sugar together until pale, light and fluffy. Add the eggs and mix again. Add the flour, baking powder, lemon zest, lemon curd and milk, and mix with a wooden spoon until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 25-30 mins or until a skewer comes out clean. Mix the sugar and lemon juice together and pour over the hot cake. Leave to cool in the tin. You can eat the cake as it is, or for a fancy finish, try making this feather icing. Mix the icing sugar with just enough water to give a runny, but not watery, icing. Put a small amount of icing in a separate bowl. Add a few drops of the food colouring to the icing until pale yellow. Spoon into a disposable icing bag. Remove the cake from the tin and peel off the baking parchment. Sit the cake on a wire rack over a baking tray. Spread the white icing over the top. Pipe thin lines of the coloured icing across the width of the cake. Use a cocktail stick to drag through the lines in opposite directions to create a feathered effect. Leave to set before cutting into slices. Source: BBC Good Food

To make the filling, beat the 100g softened butter until smooth and creamy, then gradually beat in 140g sifted icing sugar and a drop of vanilla extract (if you’re using it). Spread the buttercream over the bottom of one of the sponges. Top it with 170g strawberry jam and sandwich the second sponge on top. Dust with a little icing sugar before serving. Keep in an airtight container and eat within 2 days. Source: BBC Good Food

mother's day 22nd March 2020

So where did it all begin? The earliest accounts that relate to a 'Mothers Day' date back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to a maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology. Similar spring festivals were also prevalent in Ancient Rome. Romans celebrated their own spring festival, called Hilaria. During this festival, Cybele – a mother goddess – was honoured. This festival was celebrated on the Ides of March (15th of March) by making offerings in the temple of Cybele. The celebrations continued for three days and included parades, games and masquerades.

Connections to the church Churchgoers would regularly use their nearest parish or 'daughter' church to worship - albeit when the spring celebrations arrived, usually around the fourth Sunday of Lent, worshipers were asked to return to their home or 'Mother' church for spiritual protection that would give life and keep family members from harm. Over time the church festival became an opportunity for people to celebrate both the church and the work of mothers in general.

A day of celebration Mother's Day or Mothering Sunday has since become a regular celebration of

mothers and an opportunity for the family to show their appreciation. During Victorian times many of the poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday, the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along as a gift hence why a Mother's Day meal has also become popular in modern times.

Modern Day Today, Mother's Day is celebrated all over the World and although the celebration can take on a variety of guises, the celebration of the Mother and motherhood is always at the forefront.

The Hook & Line Seafood experience

Plymouth’s new bar and kitchen, The Hook & Line is now open in Royal William Yard’s historic Slaughterhouse building. Surrounded by the waters of Plymouth Sound, the Hook & Line’s speciality is fish and shellfish, caught by its own local in shore fishing boats. From breakfast to evening, the seasonal menu is simply cooked and beautifully fresh. A feature of The Hook & Line menu will be what’s known, in the fishing industry as bycatch. Highlighting the issue of this wasteful practice and hoping to change public perception, some fish served at the eatery will, perhaps, not be the popular species you might expect, but equally as fresh and delicious.

Enjoy the best seafood in the city with wonderful, waterside views Spring is upon us and quayside restaurant, bar and venue space, The Boathouse is gearing up for a busy season ahead. Situated on Plymouth’s waterfront, the Boathouse is perfectly placed, overlooking the Mayflower Steps, just a stone’s throw from the bustling Barbican and the landing stage, where the cruise boats and ferries depart. A retractable roof for sunnier days means you can dine, al fresco, as you enjoy the wonderful, waterside views. The Boathouse’s speciality is local fish and shellfish, sustainably caught, by its own day boats, Sidney Rose and Elin D. Among other species, around this time of year, the crew on these vessels hope to catch dover sole, plaice, mackerel, seabass and scallops. A shoreline boat, the Elin D fishes within a six-mile radius, off the coast of Plymouth and coastal boat, Sidney Rose within 20 miles, fishing the deeper waters. The specials menu varies, depending on the catch that day, but it’s guaranteed to be the freshest fish, all caught just metres and hours from arriving on your plate! Favourite dishes at The Boathouse include, plaice with lemon parsley butter with crushed new potatoes, seabass with beurre blanc, seafood linguine and simple but scrumptious pan-fried mackerel. The Scallop Shack at The Boathouse serves wonderfully fresh, South West, scallops, in a variety of mouth-watering ways, each one shucked, prepared and cooked to order by expert chefs. From lemon and garlic to black pudding and apple or pea and mint purée, there’s a tempting taste combination for everyone. There’s also a selection of meat and vegetarian dishes and a little nipper’s menu, designed for younger salty sea dogs – all made with fresh, seasonal produce. For pre-dinner drinks, the rustic, beach style bar at The Boathouse serves a wide selection of draught beers and local ales, delectable wines and upmarket spirits. Also available for private hire, The Boathouse is the top spot for drinking, dining and celebrating by the sea in Plymouth. Bycatch is the incidental catch of non-target fish or other marine species. It might be a different species, the wrong sex or undersized. Often the value of the catch is based on consumer demand and a high percentage of a catch is, therefore, wasted. Utilising bycatch prevents this waste, it helps to alleviate the pressure on more popular species and fishermen get paid for their hard work. On the Hook & Line menu you can expect succulent strips of cuttlefish calamari, lightly dusted in flour and fried until golden, pan fried gurnard, a wonderful meaty, white fish, similar to seabass, whiting fish tacos, smaller than cod, but still perfectly flavoursome, flaky pieces, served in soft tortilla tacos with sour cream, avocado and sriracha. To accompany all these great tasting dishes, The Hook & Line will be home to Plymouth’s first specialist rum bar and a whole lot more. There’ll be a specially selected wine list, Perrier Jouët champagne, cocktails will be on point and you can enjoy The Hook & Line’s very own, signature ale, the Hook, Line & Sinker. Manager, joint owner and fisherman himself, Ben Squire, said: “We love the cool and wholesome vibe of Royal William Yard and we’re looking forward to bringing the freshest fish to the Hook & Line menu. As well as standard favourites, we’ll be introducing folk to some other amazing fresh fish species and shellfish that they might not have tried before, all caught just moments from where we prepare and cook it.” Address: The Hook & Line, The Slaughterhouse, Royal William Yard, Plymouth, PL1 3GE. The Beaujolais renaissance Stephen Barrett's Wine Review

Chardonnay for the white. The defined styles of ‘up front and juicy’ for the reds, and ‘lean and elegant’ for the whites are still very evident to this day. The Appellation regulations for the reds are based on the village destinations, 10 villages are allowed to place their names firmly to the fore on the bottle’s label. As you would expect with different village locations, different styles of wine are evident in the final presentation. With a new eagerness evident for younger wine tasters discovering Beaujolais now is the perfect time to take the plunge and embrace (for many) a different style of wine. There are plenty of samples (of the red) on the market making pretty good stuff but I recommend you search out Independent Wine Merchants for the very best deals starting with Christopher Piper Wines in Ottery St Mary www.christopherpiperwines.co.uk Who with his other hat on is a celebrated winemaker in Beaujolais but plying his trade in Devon. Here in his shop you will find a carefully crafted selection (Red, white and Rose) from villages such as Fleurie, Brouilly and St Amour, offering deft winemaking skills from (often) small family producers.

Like many of you Beaujolais was amongst the first known French wine region to make an impression on this young wine taster! As a young waiter in St Ives in Cornwall I noticed this easily-pronounced wine was prominent on all wine lists and off-licences. At that time it had hardly made inroads into Supermarkets and dedicated wine shops but all was about to change towards the 1980’s as the Beaujolais Nouveau phenomenon was about to burst. But first, my sojourns to Paris in the 1970’s opened up this colourful world of Beaujolais as I trawled the back-street Bistros scooping up the atmosphere, food and wine! Along with Paris Bistro staples Muscadet, Cotes du Rhone and Sancerre my early thirst for knowledge had began with gusto as I learned about village styles, vintage variation and (best) drinkability.

Beaujolais had hit a nerve with me and my quest, noting Beaujolais Primeur (later Nouveau) piled high in the local Supermarkets and Wine Merchants, I bought some. Supple, huge fruitiness and light/easy to drink it was a revelation. Offered lightly chilled (as in Beaujolais) and served with rustic Lyonnaise cuisine (Pate de Campagne, Jambon, Boeuf Bourguignon and Fromage) it opened up a whole new world of flavours. This cuisine is tailor-made for young Beaujolais wines and was instrumental in my becoming a Bistro Chef! Eventually visiting, tasting and embracing Beaujolais culture led me to discovering the truly delicious Beaujolais Blanc was also available! The only two grapes allowed when creating Beaujolais are Gamay for the red (and a little Rose) and

Chris Piper (Chairman) and John Earle (Managing Director)

Barrel and Still in Plymouth’s St Andrews Street www.barrelandstill.co.uk are also worth searching out with wines from Fleurie taking precedence. Wines labelled (simply) Beaujolais or Beaujolais Village are also worth a search for as quality and price points are also in harmony. The current vintage of 2018 is now on the markets and as with most of European vineyards it was an exceptional year for winemakers with the wine keeping well over the next few years. I have recently discovered that new well-travelled family winemakers in Beaujolais are now making their wines with the use of oak (like the Pinot Noir’s from neighbouring Burgundy) which adds complexity enabling the wines to develop over a greater number of years. These wines are sought after and represent excellent value in today’s market. Like me you might wish to embrace Beaujolais as one of your wines of choice. Take my tip and ask the professionals they are the ones in the know…

We’ve seen a huge trend in the popularity for street food in the UK and across our food vendors, and look forward to uncovering some delicious dishes in the heart of Somerset!” This year will also see the introduction of the Award for Most Sustainable Trader, sponsored by Hellmann’s. The winner,

selected by a panel of judges at the British finals, will be crowned based on traders’ scores in a survey audited by the Sustainable Restaurant Association. Hellmann’s and British Street Food are working together to reduce food waste, and in 2020 will join the organisers, along with NCASS and Eighth Plate, in ensuring that the BSFA finals are a zero waste event. “Hellmann’s helps people to enjoy good, honest food for the simple pleasure it is – without worry or waste,” says Alanah Wilkinson from Hellmann’s. “We believe that good food shouldn’t cost the earth, which is why we champion the use of sustainably sourced ingredients and are on a journey to eradicate single use plastic. We look forward to meeting the many traders at the Awards who share our values.” With street food airing prime time on TV, and receiving big city investment, the business is clearly changing. “This is the eleventh year of the Awards,” says Richard Johnson, Founder of the BSFAs. “We’ve seen a huge change since it was established. Destinations like Clarks Village show how we eat differently now. We don’t want a fixed starter-main course-dessert menu any more – we want a bit of this and a bit of that. It’s flirty, low-commitment dining, and it’s so much more relaxed. Street food is making the world a better place.” To register your interest to participate in the South West British Street Food Awards, please visit: britishstreetfood. co.uk/2020/02/apply-now. Here’s what’s planned for The Box

Native American items from The National Museum of the American Indian and the Harvard Peabody collection. It will be free to Plymouth residents and under 18s. Tickets for non-residents will be just £5.

Chicago-based artist Christopher Baker’s work explores the relationship between society and technology. ‘Hello World! Or: How I Learned to Stop Listening and Love the Noise’ is a large audio-visual installation comprising 5,000 video diaries gathered from the internet. Each one features a person speaking candidly from a private space such as a bedroom or kitchen.

Making It

Narrenschiff (Ship of Fools)

‘Making It’ is the first contemporary art exhibition at The Box and aims to contrast the labour intensive process of making and Plymouth’s history as a city of makers with the ‘fifteen minutes of fame’ culture that exists in today’s social media age.

The Box’s opening programme is completed by Kehinde Wiley’s video installation ‘Narrenschiff (Ship of Fools)’, which is presented in partnership with The Arts Institute in the Levinsky Gallery at the University of Plymouth.

The exhibition includes works by five international artists: Leonor Antunes, Eva Grubinger, Alexandre da Cunha, Christopher Baker and Antony Gormley.

The three-channel film was acquired in 2018 through the Contemporary Art Society’s prestigious Collections Fund Prize and will be accompanied by a 1498 book also called ‘The Ship of Fools’ from The Box’s nationally important Cottonian Collection.

The Box is set to open on Saturday 16 May with a stunning programme featuring major contemporary artists, and an internationally important exhibition about the Mayflower.

Mayflower 400: Legend and Legacy

‘Mayflower 400: Legend and Legacy’ is the national commemorative exhibition for the Mayflower 400 anniversary. It’s Plymouth’s largest loans exhibition ever and has been co-curated with the Wampanoag Advisory Committee to Plymouth 400 in the USA.

Powerful perspectives will be shared through images, ideas and objects including the first Bible to be printed in America, the last known record of the Mayflower, the oldest existing state document of New England, drawings, diaries, maps, plans and portraits, and the first piece of Wampanoag art commissioned by the city. The exhibition will feature 300 items, on loan from 100 museums, libraries and archives from around the world, including

Portuguese artist Leonor Antunes’ work responds to the renovated architecture of St Luke’s church. A new floor work and a series of rope elements will interconnect with hanging brass sculptures and glass coloured lights. These will be shown alongside a new stained glass window Antunes is creating for the building. Brazilian artist Alexandre da Cunha’s sculpture ‘Figurehead II’ is made up of

10 Reasons to Fall in Love with

Plymouth Citybus

the way in bus travel by investing in better journeys for our passengers.

Your ticket to ride

There is so much to see and do in Plymouth – all accessible by bus. The Mayflower 400 commemorations mean there’s more than ever to explore in 2020. Visit the ever-growing programme of events including the opening of the Box in the spring (there’s a stop right outside) or indulge in the city’s other attractions such as the National Marine Aquarium or a trip to the Hoe. Remember we can take you further afield as well – when was the last time you explored the stunning beauty of the Rame Peninsula? Leave the car, and stress, at home.

We’re here for you

We’ve spent the last year making our bus service better than ever before – so here are a few of the ways we’ve done it We’re grinding out gridlock

Taking the bus means one less car on the road. Did you know a full double decker bus takes a staggering 75 cars off the road? Not only is this good for the environment but it helps congestion. Our brand spanking new buses on the 42 route through Mutley are helping reduce gridlock in one of Plymouth’s biggest traffic hotspots.

We care for the air

The 11 new buses introduced on the 42 and PR3 routes join the 16 Spark buses we launched in 2017. These buses – a £2.6million investment – have far fewer carbon emissions and are 10 times cleaner per passenger than a new diesel car. By sending them through Mutley we are targeting an area pinpointed for poor air quality. It’s actually the worst in Plymouth, so we’re doing everything we can to tackle the issue.

Parking problems in the past

Forget the hassle of expensive parking charges and making sure you’ve always got change in your car. The bus saves you money - pay via Contactless and enjoy a hassle-free bus journey. Small changes make all the difference swapping one car journey a week for the bus will not only help the planet but it’s also lighter on your pocket. Win win.

We’re quick

Especially at rush hour. Plymouth’s network of bus lanes means we can negotiate the city’s traffic highs with much more flexibility and our punctuality rates are better than ever.

58 woinplymouth

We’re digital

Our innovative app allows you to track your bus in real time and plan your journey with ease. Bus stops also have real time information on when your ride will be arriving.

We give you ‘me’ time

Cruise the bus lane past the traffic and enjoy the extra time. Read a book, relax, catch up on those pesky emails or strike up a conversation with the person sitting next to you. Suddenly the car seems a rather frustrating, lonely and boring place to be!

We’re ultra-convenient and comfortable

Our new buses on some of our busiest routes are kitted out with comfy leather seats, free WiFi and USB charging for your mobile – not to mention contactless payment on every single bus. We lead

Plymouth Citybus invests thousands of pounds in local community initiatives, sponsorships and charities to give back to Plymouth and the community. Spot our charity branded buses travelling the city as well as supporting other organisations and initiatives such as All Saints Academy and the Nancy Astor anniversary. This year you’ll notice we’re supporting plenty of big events for the community – including the Britain’s Ocean City Running Series with the 5k, 10k and half marathon.

We’ll help you save

We love to give you money off. Did you know if you are in full time education, training or part of an apprenticeship you qualify for 15% off? Plus, if you are referred by the Job Centre we can give you the bus ride to your interview absolutely free. And if you’re exploring, we offer unlimited travel in zones 1 and 2 all day Saturday and Sunday for only £7!

Days to remember at Mount Edgcumbe After the challenging weather over winter it’s time to look forward to some fun in the sunshine and where better than Mount Edgcumbe. This place of ancient barrows, mystical woodland, beautiful formal gardens, listed monuments, battle sites, forts, chapels and holy wells dotted along a remote coastline above secret beaches and smugglers’ coves has everything you need to turn a day out into an adventure. Over the centuries Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park has been home to many generations of the Edgcumbe family from the early 1500s and today is enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year. Originally built in 1547 the House remained home to the Edgcumbe family until 1971 when the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe passed over the land to the stewardship of Cornwall Council and Plymouth City Council as a Country Park. It is now open Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (11am-4.30pm last admission at 4pm, admission charges apply) for visitors to enjoy. Within the 865 acres of Grade I listed landscape that makes up the Country Park there are numerous fortifications; summer houses; an ice house; garden houses; seats; follies; stables; kennels; a dairy; a sawmill; a smithy; a wheelwrights workshop, estate workers houses and even a substantial gunpowder store which have been enjoyed and used to support the estates infrastructure for over 500 years.

There are visual treats in store along the way. The black walnut tree crowning main lawn will be decorated with Easter bonnets & bunting as we nod towards the traditions of the season. There will be a chance for an Easter family selfie taken through the frames hanging in the branches, fun for all ages. At Easter-time the garden is a shock of colours with spring blooms adorning the flower beds and views. You can take a moment to stroll through the garden and enjoy the displays. If you prefer an expert take on all things gardening, then you can join a Glorious Garden Tour to find out more. Tours are scheduled throughout the year and listed on the website. After visiting in spring you might like to return to see the change of the seasons, indulge in another cream tea or see something different like conservation in the house. There are activities for families planned for May bank holidays & school summer holidays. Each time you discover something new at Antony, it allows the National Trust to keep looking after special places like Antony for ever, for everyone. Thank you for your support.

easter days out

Buckland Abbey

Cotehele

A carpet of flowers, newborn lambs and walks in the countryside; where better to enjoy a day out than at Buckland Abbey this Spring?

At Cotehele things really spring back to life at this time of year as the house and mill reopen on Saturday 7 March after their winter deep clean and conservation work. We’re taking a closer look at the transatlantic connections of the collection this year, in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower, so do pick up the ‘Tide and Time’ trail to follow when you visit the house.

Yelverton PL20 6EY Tel: 01822 853607 www.nationaltrust.org.uk/buckland-abbey

This Easter the Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt is back, and this year bunny has hidden lots of giant eggs around the estate for you to find. Pick up your shopping list from Visitor Welcome and head out on a walk and tick off all the fruits and vegetables that were once grown by the Medieval monks. Once you have found all your shopping, can you find the special eggs hidden on the estate? These are the weird and wonderful plants that people in Medieval and Tudor times once believed existed – such as the lamb’s tree. The Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt runs from Saturday 28th March Monday 13th April (£2 per egg hunt and normal admission applies, members free). Throughout Easter we also have lots of craft activities for families to enjoy. Join Naturemake, and create magical fairy dens, sparkling unicorns and pirate ships, all made from natural materials. The fun continues with our family trails all about hearts and flowers. Can you spot all the first signs of Spring outside or find all the hearts and flowers hidden in the walls and paintings of the Abbey. For more information, please call us or visit the website or check out our Facebook page.

Saltash PL12 6TA Tel: 01579 351346 www.nationaltrust.org.uk/cotehele

Also new this March is the Bull Pen Gallery – our relocated art and craft gallery. We’re launching this exciting new space with a preview evening on Friday 6 March, 5-7pm, were you can meet the artists over canopes and a drink of fizz. The garden is full of spring colour, most notably the many varieties of daffodils which grow here and are a reminder of the Tamar Valley’s market gardening past. We celebrate these with a Daffodil Festival from 14-22 March when there’ll be daffodil tours of the garden, displays of the different varieties and daffodil sculptures by NAFAS groups, which will be on display from the weekend of 16 March. Tamar Valley AONB is decorating the packing shed in the garden, where we tell the story of market gardening in the area. We’ll be running the Cadbury Easter Egg hunt at Cotehele from 28 March- 13 April this year. If you’d prefer to escape the Easter weekend rush, you can follow the trail helping Bunny find noisy creatures to make music with in Nature’s Band on a quieter day! The trail is £2 per child, with a Cadbury chocolate prize. As always, there’s more about everything happening here on our website (above) or check out our social feeds on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. We hope to see you soon!

Saltram House and Gardens Devon Expressway, PL7 1UH Tel: 01752 333500 www.nationaltrust.org.uk/saltram

Spring is now in full swing at Saltram, and the park and gardens are transformed with colour. As we emerge from the winter months now is the perfect time to come and see our spring flowers. Over the last two autumns the garden team have planted around 6,000 new daffodil bulbs along the Lime Avenue. All of them are historic varieties, many of which were locally bred and are rare in cultivation today. The sea of yellows and oranges makes for a magical springtime walk through the formal gardens to brighten the greyest of days. Why not stop off at the Chapel Tearoom after your stroll for a refreshing cup of tea and a slice of cake? Or if you fancy a longer walk, choose from one of our many routes around the estate and spot the diverse wildlife and changing woodlands as we move into the new season. Join us from 21st March to celebrate some of Saltram’s greatest treasures. Explore the list of the twelve highlights from the estate, garden and mansion to discover the stories and connections that make them, and Saltram, so special. Visit us over the Easter holidays and take part in the annual Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt. Follow and find all the clues around the garden to finish your adventure and receive your Cadbury treat. Every time you head out on a Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt, you’ll help us fund vital conservation work to protect special places for future generations to explore. Find us and follow us on Facebook, Instagram or check out our website for all our events and activities.

Overbecks

Wembury, Plymouth, Devon PL9 ODY 01548 842893 www.nationaltrust.org.uk/overbecks

Tucked away on the cliffs above Salcombe is this hidden paradise: a subtropical garden, bursting with colour, filled with exotic and rare plants and surprises round every corner, which surrounds the seaside home of scientist and inventor Otto Overbeck. The views from the garden over the estuary and coast are truly breathtaking. Inside the house you will find Otto's 'Rejuvenator', once believed to cure all ills, and the melodious giant music box called a polyphon (you can choose a disc to play). This Easter, children can collect the trail from reception and imagine being a plant hunter who has arrived in Japan. Time now to explore and find eight key Japanese plants located around the garden. We are open daily from 8 February to 1 November 2020 from 11am to 5pm.

Quiet at the Aquarium

Easter 2020 at the NMA

As the countdown to the Easter holidays begins, the National Marine Aquarium is looking forward to a jam-packed calendar of activities promising a great time for all the family. As well as getting the chance to explore its range of breath-taking exhibits and meet over 4,000 Ocean animals – including much-loved cheeky Green Turtle, Friday, and a variety of different sharks – visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Colours of the Ocean, embarking upon a journey through the underwater world that shines a spotlight on the fascinating patterns and colour-changes that can be seen amongst some of the Ocean’s most captivating residents. With a themed trail and daily show, plus craft workshops and feeds happening throughout the Easter holidays, it’s an exciting time to explore this spectacular underwater world.

As if that wasn’t enough, Easter also sees the return of the NMA’s popular ‘Ocean Squad’ teen activity club. This weeklong programme, designed especially for budding young marine biologists and Ocean enthusiasts, is packed full of exciting Ocean-themed activities – including snorkelling, sustainable seafood cooking and a boat trip out on the Plymouth Sound. And, since the NMA is run by conservation charity, the Ocean Conservation Trust, participants will have the chance to create their very own conservation video shining a spotlight on the plight of our Ocean and the things we can all do to help.

The fun never stops at the NMA, and Plymouth’s best-loved indoor attraction is the perfect place to enjoy a great day out this Easter. Take a look at what’s in store over the coming weeks and pop these dates in your diary.

Quiet at the Aquarium 4th April

This Easter, the NMA is set to open its doors once again for its popular afterhours event, Quiet at the Aquarium. Designed to allow families and individuals with sensory needs to explore its exhibits without the noise and distraction of the normal daytime crowds, visitors will be able to enjoy a serene and tranquil atmosphere that will allow them to focus on the beautiful Ocean life that surrounds them. 30th March to 3rd April

The NMA’s popular teen activity club is back this Easter. Packed with exciting activities including science, experiments, boat trips, snorkelling and more, it’s the perfect way for your teen to immerse themselves in the underwater world, connect with the Ocean and experience all that both the Aquarium and the local waters of the Plymouth Sound have to offer. A sell-out event last year, be sure to book your tickets now to avoid disappointment.

YMCA Plymouth offers something for everyone

but our centre provides much more than just that. Whether it’s birthday parties, disability friendly activities or vocational training, it’s all found here under one roof.”

After an astonishing 172 years supporting the local community, YMCA Plymouth still remains one of the most trusted and loved providers of education, health and family activities in the city.

There’s also a range of community events coming up this spring at YMCA, including their annual 3K run on May 31st. To learn more about this and other activities at the centre, visit: ymcaplymouth.org.uk

You’ll be stretched to find anywhere else in Plymouth that offers the huge scope of activity that’s found at the YMCA centre on Honicknowle Lane. The spectrum of activity ranges from their soft play sessions for under 5s all the way to specialist services like cardiac rehabilitation. The local charity describes their approach as ‘youth-focused’ and ‘community-minded’, meaning their work prioritises young people while delivering a range of services that support the whole community. Activities for young people at the centre include one of the most affordable holiday clubs in the city, running throughout the school holidays for ages 8-16. Since the 1970s, the club has one of the best reputations for offering a range of sports, games and trips, that keep kids entertained and active, whatever the weather. Also found at the YMCA is its awardwinning Discovery College, which provides vocational training to over 200 young people each year. Since its founding 10 years ago the college has become a huge success story in Plymouth’s education landscape.

A little-known fact about YMCA Plymouth is that they are an independent charity. While the YMCA brand is known across the world, each YMCA is a sperate organisation that affiliates to the wider movement. This means the centre is truly run by Plymouth people for Plymouth people, rather than being part of a large chain or for-profit company. Centre Manager, Stacey Ferris says: “Supporting local people is what we’re all about. Many know us for our range of sports clubs, gym and fitness classes,

financial advice

Free up your financial headspace

Paul Northmore, MD of Manning and Company discusses the link between finance and mental health. meet people who ‘need to renew their mortgage’ or ‘review their pensions’, but the most rewarding part of what we do is to help people pinpoint their money worries and concerns and get going on making changes. Mortgages, pensions, savings etc are all tools in the box to work out how we can help, but as financial advisers we can give you a helping hand to see the wood for the trees.

Is it just me, or has there been less publicised about healthy eating, exercise etc so far in 2020? I am seeing much more about self-care, saying no, removing negative thoughts and living a less stressful life. It got me thinking about head space and how much our finances can play on our minds. If you have a big financial change to make, you may not have any idea where to start, or you may know exactly what you need to do but just not have the time to sort it. At Manning and Company, as independent financial advisers we often

82 woinplymouth

When things get out of hand you can find yourself in a vicious circle, where worrying about money can affect your mental health which, in turn, can then make dealing with your money harder. You may have the cash but need advice on how to make the most of it and how to make your money work harder for you. To make a difference to your financial situation, pop into the Manning and Company office on Fore Street Ivybridge or call 01752 837950 to book a free initial consultation.

Do you look after your grandchildren to help with childcare? If you are a grandparent looking after grandchildren so that their parents can go back to work, you could increase your state pension by applying for a credit. This credit could entitle you to an extra £4500 (based on a 20 year retirement).

Childcare is expensive and many parents are finding that they are relying more on grandparents to look after children instead of putting them into nurseries etc. Estimated figures show that grandparents give 1.7 billion hours of childcare every year, looking after more than 1.5 million grandchildren. 100,000 grandparents could be benefiting from this credit. If this applies to you, will need to apply for a National Insurance Credit, also referred to as Specified Adult Childcare Credits. How does it work? The parent who receives child benefit for a child under the age of 12 automatically receives National Insurance (NI) credits towards their state pension. However when the parent goes back to work and pays NI through their wages, they no longer need the credit. The parent signs a form and passes the NI credit to you, the grandparent. This means that the grandparent benefits from the NI credit and it goes towards your state pension instead. This can add £230 a year to your pension, as long as you are under state pension age at the time of the childcare. This credit can also apply to uncles and aunties and other family members. Make a

statement

Neutral walls and a statement piece of furniture will be 'on trend' in 2020.

So what will the home of 2020 look like? Last issue we took a look at how many of us are moving into a new year, and a new decade by giving our lifestyles a major overhaul. It may well come as a bit of light relief to know that many of the new interior trends for 2020 don't focus on lengthy reconstructions, but on creating a striking statement that can transform a room. We take a look at the main areas of the home and find out how you too can make a statement.

Living Room:

Last year, the Nordic Retreat look that offered a stripped back style created a chilled-out space to relax in. The abundance of grey palletes that adorned living room walls has been replaced by warmer tones, such as oatmeal, natural buff, beige and the Dulux 'Colour of the Year' for 2020 Tranquil Dawn (see below). Nature is still at the heart of the living room of 2020, with natural sun-drenched wood furniture, botanical prints and living plants complimenting the calm, comfy feel. In order to break up the serene Scandi theme, look for statement pieces that create a talking point and brings out a bit of your personality.

Carpet is still a favourite with those creating a new look in the living room as there are so many patterns and finishes that can completely transform a room. However, if you want to keep your natural flooring then maybe an adventurous rug with bright stripes or geometric shapes may give you that statement piece.

In recent months, many retailers have been showcasing curved or fluted sofas which give a contemporary take on traditional luxury. Look out for these oversized statement pieces in upholstered velvet or linen finishes.

Wall art is still a great way to break up the neutral colours of a room, look out for abstract artwork that can offer bold blocks of colour that can create a mood. This theme can also be complimented with the addition of cushions on your curved sofa.

Finally, if you want to make the ultimate statement of opulence in the kitchen then look no further than marble. Strongly veined marble is making a comeback and the busier the better. Complement your white marble kitchen with brass taps and pendant lighting and the contrast of natural materials such as wooden bar stools and flooring.

Back to Black:

Kitchen: Over recent years, the kitchen has become one of the most important rooms in the home. A hub for entertaining, work and relaxaiton; this multi-practical room will see trends in 2020 that are many and varied. Last years grey palletes (as with the living room) are still holding their own, but don't be surprised to see far more bolder colours take their place as the 'statement' theme continues. If you still prefer your kitchen to have a natural feel, then your white or grey wooden tables, or cream or terracotta slate floors could benefit from an adventurous addition of colour on the walls. This years popular pallettes have included light sea greens, moody peacock blues or even clay as they all compliment a natural feel as well as add warmth.

For those who prefer lighter walls but still want to make a statement, then consider the contrast of all black kitchen units. Black has become one of the most popular choices for kitchens in 2020, adding in some natural elements such as wooden breakfast bars and counters. To break up the contrast between light and dark, look at accessories that can add colour or texture to the room. Brass, copper and gold were massively popular last year and continue to be present in detailing such as handles, taps and lighting. It's these elements that can really add a bit of personality to a room. Other notable additions to the kitchen of 2020 include the popularity of 'raw' looking materials. Exposed wood, concrete flooring, cork walls and plywood cabinets are eco-friendly and offer a longevity as we become ever more concerned about our global footprint.

Introducing the Bathroom Trends of 2020

When choosing your lighting, remember those all-important buzzwords this season; special-finish and statement. Fluted, frosted, and olive bronze – all of these will make your bathroom look that bit more luxe.

"Sandy shades, terracotta tones and dusky greens are on the list, all set to grace your bathroom palette this year." Shapes Curves

If you do anything this season be sure to introduce a curve or two to your bathroom décor. Mirrors and furniture are where it’s at, curved doors and oval mirrors are a great way to bring a small update on your bathroom as opposed to a complete makeover. Plus, you’ll love seeing a renewed look everyday with some added curvaceous character.

Material Colour

Lighting

Earthy Neutrals

Luxury lighting

As our lives go back to nature so we go back to natural. With increasingly sustainable lifestyles, we are looking for a reflection of that in our homes and in the colours we use but don’t be fooled, it won’t be a boring mix of beige. Sandy shades, terracotta tones and dusky greens are on the list, all set to grace your bathroom palette this year.

Jewelled

Contrastingly, vibrant jeweled tones are making ground in the bathroom and particularly in small, compact spaces like cloakrooms and guest en-suites. No holding back here, grab hold of those treasure-inspired tones with colours such as emerald green, sapphire blue and citrine yellow and channel this trend through towels, tiles or even a shower frame.

Patterns Maximalist Mix

Tackle patterns with more patterns. This year it’s all out maximalism so choose one style of patterns, for example geometric shapes or decorative motifs and carry this throughout the room. Why not choose patterned wallpaper and carry the pattern throughout your tiles but in a complimenting colour.

Creating the right mood with your lighting is so important in the bathroom and as we spend more time dwelling in these spaces, it’s crucial to nail the lighting with task and ambient options. This is easily achieved when you meet with a Ripples designer who can create a unique lighting plan for you.

Fluted Glass

Step-aside Crittall craze, it’s fluted glass that’s taking centre stage right now. We’re particularly fond of this style as it enhances the shower space, with strong lines and texture. And, if you like a little added layer of modesty this the answer. However, this look isn’t limited to shower glass, take it to lights and cupboard doors too, it can add a beautiful soft impression to an otherwise hard space.

New Year 'bounce' is a 'much needed development' to our housing market It looks as if there has been a bit of a new year bounce in the housing market as the number of people looking to buy a home, and placing their home on the market, rose in January according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). The RICS stated that easing uncertainty about the general election and Brexit prompted the optimism, albeit they are remanining cautiously optimistic.

may still be some political uncertainty the end of the year as the government looks to agree a trade deal with the EU.

Brexit impact

Many experts believe there has been a correlation between a downturn in the housing market and the three and half years it has taken to exit the EU.

Having seen listings of new instructions at a record low over recent years, the RICS said that the increase "much needed development".

Following the general election result, various surveys have suggested the UK housing market has seen a pick-up. As potenital buyers and sellers breathe a collective sigh of relief, it is still too early to guarantee this renewed interest will be sustained.

The RICS were quick to point out that it remains to be seen how long this new found momentum would last, as there

Many property professionals from across the country, who submitted their views to the RICS, stated that the greater

activity was a result of more certainty and confidence as well as some milder weather in January. However, the recent weather issues that we have had across the UK may already put pay to these statistics as it will have been difficult for potential buyers to get out and about.

Having seen listings of new instructions at a record low over recent years, the RICS said that the increase "much needed development". Spring tends to be the busiest time for the housing market, as buyers and sellers act on new year plans to move home. We will have to wait and see what the next set of result concludes, but it does seem that in the short-term, these set of results will be good news to those looking to move in 2020.

House price rise is fastest in 14 months.

What is the First Homes scheme and how does it work? We first heard of the 'First Homes' scheme during the general election, a new initiative that could help eligible buyers approximately £100,000 on a first property. Robert Jenrick, The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government is launching the scheme that can offer a 30% discount on a proportion of new homes, funded out of contributions from developers.

What homes qualify for the 'First Homes' scheme? First Homes are flats and houses built on developments up and down the country. They will be no different from other properties except they will be sold with a discount of at least 30 percent. They will be sold to local people who want to stay in the community where they live or work but are struggling to purchase a home at market prices. They will be prioritised for first-time buyers, serving members and veterans of the Armed Forces, and key workers, such as nurses, police and teachers. The discount will be passed on to future buyers when First Homes are resold so more people can be helped onto the ladder.

How will it work? First Homes will be sold with a minimum discount of 30 per cent off the market price, but local areas will be able to set a larger discount to ensure the homes are affordable to local people.

Buyers will purchase First Homes in the usual way and will have access to conventional mortgage products. When owners of First Homes decide to move up the ladder, their home will be independently valued. When they sell the home, the discount will be passed on to the new owner with the discount (of at least 30%) applied to the new value. This means homes will always be sold below market price and local communities will benefit for generations to come, with local authorities continuing to allocate these homes to first-time buyers and able to prioritise local workers. First Homes are for people to live in, so we won’t allow them to be used as holiday homes or as buy to lets. These are for local people to take their first step onto the ladder.

Example: Market Price £300k First Homes discount of 30% First Home buyer pays £210k When the owner is looking to sell, the new value of their home is £350k. This is allocated to a new first time buyer or prioritised worker by the local authority, and it is sold with a 30% discount at £245k. The scheme is (at the time of writing) at consultation stage. Details and examples are taken from Gov.UK website. More details will be realesed on the website later this year.

One of the UK's largest lenders has recently released figures, based on its own mortgage data, that house prices rose at their fastest annual rate for 14 months, with an increase of 1.9% in January. As outlined in our piece opposite. The Nationwide suggests there has been some release of pent-up demand following the clear general election result, abeit, the building society expects property prices to be flat in 2020.

The Nationwide suggests there has been some release of pent-up demand following the clear general election result, abeit, the building society expects property prices to be flat in 2020. The cost of buying a home in the UK also saw a rise of 0.5% on the previous month, talking the average price to £215,897. Economists at Nationwide have estimated that prices will remain broadly flat over the coming 12 months as much will depend on how quickly uncertainty about the UK's future trading relationships lifts, as well as the outlook for global growth. The new year is generally a busy time for Estate Agents as potential buyers begin to look for properties in earnest and those who have had a couple of weeks over the festive period to talk about a potential move start ot put their plans in motion. What is different about this year, is that for 3 1/2 years, there have been thousands of people sat on their hands as Brexit uncertainty has led them to be cautious. Despite the welcome news that both buyers and sellings are begining to find some confidence in the housing market, it won't be until the spring figures are released that we can see if this trend is to continue throughout 2020.
