Tim Brown, eclectic mentor “Students mentor me as much as I mentor them.”
“Advisor,”
“basement-floor bass of the Wofford Singers,” “tremendous listener,” “spirited jokester,” “artist,” “encourager,” “intellectually curious,” “academically well-rounded,” “fly fisherman,” “vegetarian,” “friend.” Students who come to Tim Brown either formally or informally for mentoring and advisement describe him in just about every way except by his official college title. That’s because as cataloguing librarian, Brown could stay hidden among the tomes of the Sandor Teszler Library. Instead, he finds ways to connect to students across the campus. He serves as an advisor for first-year students, takes his lunch hour to audit a class each semester, sings with the Wofford choral groups, attends college events, and even fields questions at the library’s reference desk because he loves spending time with students. “With these students,” Brown says, looking around at the five students who joined him over IZZE sparkling sodas in the Acorn Café but describing the dozen of students whom he admires and respects, “one thing leads to another. Talk of research leads to discussion of a band someone heard in a pub and that leads to a short story someone read.” “He’s able to draw out the best in people,” says Vanessa Lauber ’09, who was one of Brown’s first-year advisees. Tramaine Brown ’10, who works with Brown on the Administrative Court, agrees. “He’s refreshing because he realizes that things are not always black and white, and that realization is advantageous to students.” All of the students around the table have Tim Brown stories to share… how he makes working in the library fun, how he can change his pitch in a split second, how he listened after the death of a friend. Brown, however, is quick to point out that their roles are often reversed. “Students mentor me as much as I mentor them,” says Brown. “These students have flipped me upside-down in the most positive of ways.”
