Mountain Pygmy-possum
There are fewer than 2000 critically endangered Mountain Pygmy-possums left in the wild with three populations of Mountain Pygmy-possums living in the alpine and subalpine rocks of our neighbouring Alpine regions - Bogong High Plains and Mt Buller in Victoria and Mt Kosciusko in NSW. An emerging threat is the reduction in the possum’s key food source over spring, the Bogong Moth. Bogong Moths normally migrate from Queensland, NSW and western Victoria towards Mountain Pygmypossum habitats. But for the past two years they haven’t arrived. There are several possible reasons. As well as drought and pesticide use, bright lights from towns and cities are thought to lure and trap the moths along their migration route. This mural is to highlight their stories and inform people of their plight. THE ARTIST Award-winning artist Kirrily Anderson makes one-of-a-kind art with a nostalgic bent. Influenced by the intricacies of the natural environment, her work embraces tiny details that call the viewer to slow and see the often unseen. From a graphic design background to visual art, street art and workshops for children, with turns in commercial illustration, curation and event management thrown in, Kirrily has evolved into a multidisciplinary artist whose work aims to connect people, places and memories and whose focus is now a happy blend of murals, visual art and creative workshops.
