GET CONNECTED IN WODONGA

Whether we are 17 or 70, social connections matter. We all need someone to talk to, someone to care.

When we connect with our communities and social groups, we tend to experience a boost in wellbeing. We feel a sense of belonging and create meaningful support systems that we can utilise as we age.

In Wodonga, we are fortunate to have a variety of services and opportunities for social connection. As you read this guide, take note of any that resonate with you and make a plan to build your social connections.

BEING CONNECTED IN WODONGA 2

WELCOME

Wodonga Council recognises diversity as one of our community’s strengths. The council is committed to supporting the quality of life of our community and recognises that everyone has the right to respect, inclusion, and equitable access to services and opportunities.

As we age, it’s important to prioritise activities that help us feel connected and empower us to take care of our health and wellbeing.

Fortunately, Wodonga has a lot to offer when it comes to age-friendly activities!

• Spending quality time in interesting places with family, friends, and the community

• Exploring new places and enjoying nature

• Enjoying a range of informal or organised physical activities

• Learning about different cultures and embracing diversity

• Making a positive impact in the community through volunteer work

• Appreciating art and being entertained

With so many different things to see and do, it can be hard to know where to start! That’s why we’ve created this Being Connected in Wodonga Guide. You’ll discover how to be actively involved in the Wodonga community, including ideas for physical, social, cultural, and intellectual activities. Whether you love being physically active or enjoying art and entertainment (or a little bit of everything!), this guide is here to help.

A NOTE FROM THE MAYOR CR KEV POULTON

The city of Wodonga is made up of a vibrant, diverse community of residents. While the wellbeing and connectedness of all our people is of great importance, there are challenges and barriers that can hinder social connection.

As a result, people can become socially isolated and disconnected from friends, family, and their community. This is of particular concern for our older residents with anecdotal evidence suggesting that approximately 1463 people over the age of 65 are socially isolated in Wodonga.

The Being Connected in Wodonga

Age-Friendly Guide is a key document that outlines opportunities for our older residents to engage, connect, and thrive. It contains helpful information about entertainment, physical activity, arts and culture, transport, and volunteering in Wodonga.

Overall, Wodonga Council is focused on creating a more age-friendly city and ensuring that the many opportunities for social connection are accessible for all.

EXPLORE IN NATURE

There are many beautiful parks and gardens in Wodonga where you can spend quality time with friends or family, wander among the trees, or sit and watch the world around you. Spending time in nature is beneficial for physical and mental wellbeing and can provide opportunities for social connections, too.

In Wodonga, we’re fortunate to have access to a variety of picturesque parks that have important facilities.

BEING CONNECTED IN WODONGA 24

Some of our major parks with barbecue and public toilets include:

• Willow Park – Parking is located off Pearce St, Wodonga, in Kennedy Crt, near the barbecue and toilet facilities. This park offers a skate bowl for young children and teens. There is fitness equipment along the path and a playground.

• Les Stone Park - Parking is located off Lawrence St on Parkland Dve. This park offers barbecue and toilet facilities. It also has a playground featuring a ship and access to House Creek. Further up the park near Brockley St, there is a wetland with a jetty for fishing.

• Belvoir Park (Sumsion Gardens)

– Parking is located on Huon St, Wodonga. You can also access Belvoir Park off High St (Hume Freeway end) turning into Reuss Rd. Belvoir Park is home to a community wood-fired oven which is available to hire.

• Crossing Place Trail - The Crossing Place Trail is located near the original crossing places of the Murray River – at the junction of the Murray River and Bungambrawatha Creek and the Murray River and Oddies Creek. It is a 5.1 kilometre natural trail loop, featuring sculptural works from local Aboriginal artists. The trail is set in a natural environment of gum trees and keen observers will notice an array of wildlife including platypus, dunnarts, antechinus, water rats, wedge-tailed eagles and the rare black-billed spoonbills.

MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY

Our city has more than 8000 dedicated volunteers. Without the commitment from so many of these volunteers, Wodonga would not be the wonderful city it is.

Volunteering is a great way to give something back to the community or to make a difference to the people around you. It provides an opportunity to develop new skills, build on existing knowledge and is a wonderful way to challenge yourself or experience something new.

VOLUNTEER RESOURCE BUREAU

Albury Wodonga Volunteer Resource Bureau recruits volunteers and refers them to community organisations in a variety of areas across Albury and Wodonga. They can help you find the volunteer opportunities that match your interests, skills, passions, and values to ensure a positive volunteering experience. Contact Albury Wodonga Volunteer Resource Bureau and have a chat with the supportive and friendly team.

PETER MASSEY

Peter enjoys the social interaction and mental stimulation he gains from actively participating in the Wodonga community. And, wow, does he participate! Peter attends classes (economics and politics, highways and byways of English) and events such as coffee mornings at University of the Third Age Albury Wodonga (U3A). He facilitates the Random Thoughts and Ideas classes at U3A Albury Wodonga as a volunteer tutor and contributes as a committee member of U3A. He is also involved in local church activities and spends time helping others with information technology matters!

Peter says joining an organisation such as U3A can help you learn new things, meet other people, and share your interests and knowledge by volunteering as a tutor. How to contact U3A
