Medication Aide Apr 3 – 20 (M, T, TH) 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. $337.50 (plus cost of book) Alliance Learning Center This course is designed to instruct the experienced nurse aide to assume the role of medication aide. We teach you the beginning knowledge of medication administration and pharmacology. Upon completion of the course, the student is eligible to sit for the final medication aide exam, sponsored by a State of Nebraska testing site. Successful completion of this exam allows the student to be eligible to be on the Nebraska State Medication Aide registry.

Be a Writer Mar 27 – May 1 (M) 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., $35, Harms Center Everyone has a story. This course helps you bring that idea to the page. Each class meeting features a writing lesson, writing prompt, and an opportunity for sharing one’s own work, with discussion to follow. Previous students have received honorable mention in writing contests, and seen their work published after gaining confidence in this class. Lessons are based on The Write To Write, by Julia Cameron, but the text is not required.

Harms Center Ko Heichi Kickboxing is a great workout full of energy, fun, music, and extreme calorieburning potential, but this is not just another aerobics class. You learn proper safe martial arts techniques in a well-rounded full body workout and each class highlights some aspect of personal safety or self-defense. Bushidokan Martial Arts training is a great way to build stamina, increase strength, speed, flexibility, balance, and overall body conditioning but if it doesn’t teach you how to fight and defend yourself, then something is wrong! Bushidokan specializes in proven fighting and self-defense tactics. We train warriors for real world experiences.

Still Life Painting with Wool: A Felting Workshop

Ages: 16 & Up Apr 8 & 9, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. WNAC Members: $50 Non-Members: $60 Plus a $25 materials fee (felting kit) West Nebraska Art Center Felting is a wonderfully versatile medium that can be used to create standalone 2- and 3-D art pieces, or in combination with other fiber art medium as an appliqué or embellishment. In this class, explore both the art of wet felting and needle felting, and learn the skills to make your own original framed, mixed media, textile art piece. Composition, use of color and light, and special effects created with fiber are the focus, as you learn to ‘paint’ with wool roving. Day one is devoted to the wet felting process and the creation of a custom background fabric for the artwork. On day two, have fun needle felting your own flowers in a vase from a still life composition. Call WNAC at 308.632.2226 to register.

If you are a business owner or are considering starting your own business, this information is a must for you and your bookkeeper. The topics discussed not only benefit professionals; you can learn how sales tax affects you every day. The presentation covers all areas of sales and use tax, including licensing requirements, exemptions, reporting, and taxable services. There is plenty of time for questions and answers. Sales Tax Exemption on Agriculture Apr 12, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. $10, Harms Center This class covers, in detail, the sales tax exemption for commercial agricultural

producers on the purchase and repair of equipment. Discussion includes qualifying agricultural operations, equipment and parts, and how to obtain a refund for tax paid on parts for depreciable agricultural equipment purchased prior to Oct. 1, 2014. Exemptions for feed, seed, and chemicals are explained. A portion of the session is dedicated to contractors who build structures, such as grain bins used in agricultural operations. Instructors teach how to complete tax returns for a variety of scenarios, as well as related exemption and refund forms. This session benefits farmers, implement dealers, equipment suppliers, and parts store owners, as well as those who operate machine shops and other types of repair facilities. It is also relevant to feed and seed suppliers. This course utilizes a practical approach to teaching Intermediate Sign Language. This class is a continuation of the Beginning Sign Language class. Students are encouraged to have taken Beginning Sign Language or have knowledge of basic signs. This course not only deals with more vocabulary but also includes the use of non-manual markers, facial expression, classifiers, and the grammatical structure of American Sign Language. We also work on receptive sign skills and continue with the fluency of finger-spelling. This is an interactive course for those who consider their sign skills as intermediate. Basic Nursing Assistant May 1 – 31 (M, T, W) 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. $475 plus book, Harms Center This course is designed to instruct students in becoming basic nursing assistants. The course provides essential knowledge and skills to provide basic care and skills to residents/clients of health care facilities including such topics as residents’ rights, communication,

safety, observation, reporting, and assisting residents/clients in maintaining basic comfort and safety. It is designed to meet the training requirements of the federal and Nebraska state law for nursing assistants working in licensed facilities.

Intro to Fly Fishing May 2 & 4, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., $25 Harms Center Fly fishing is generally thought of as a sport best enjoyed in the setting of mountain streams catching trout or salmon. While these waters are great places to fly fish, you can catch a variety of fish and have the same great fly fishing experiences in your local warm water lakes and ponds. This class helps the beginning or novice fly fisher learn the basic principles associated with fly fishing. Learn more about more about the equipment necessary for getting started, how to properly set up a fly rod, become familiar with the basic principles of fly casting, and understand the use of flies and common fly fishing strategies necessary for catching fish in streams, lakes, and ponds. This class is required prior to registering for Principles of Fly Casting.

May 3 or Jun 7 (W), 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. $45, Harms Center Instruction on the basic information in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid for first responders and initiators to incidents. This class results in basic twoyear certification for the skills required to perform CPR and first aid skills in the field.

Dog Obedience May 4 – Jun 15 (TH), 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. $45, Harms Center Does your dog have class? CLASS, which stands for Canine Life and Social Skills, is an educational and hands-on program to promote training of practical skills and to improve the bond between people and their canine companions through positive reinforcement. Some of the real life skills taught in the class are settling on cue, coming when called, walking politely on a leash, waiting to be released to a

food bowl, and responding to “leave it” in the face of temptation. This is a new class with limited registrations. Do not bring your dog to the first night of class but bring the treats you are currently using with your dog, if any. If you have specific questions about your dog’s appropriateness for this class, give us a call at 308.635.6700.

Safe Babysitting Clinic

Ages 10 – 14 May 6 & 7, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. $55, Harms Center Are you looking for a babysitting job this summer? Come earn a certificate from our Safe Babysitting Course. WNCC faculty teaches American Heart Association CPR for adult, child, and infant, basic first aid, choking rescue techniques, and use of an AED resulting in a Heart Saver certification card good for two years. Our Early Childhood Education director provides 10+ hours of babysitting instruction on safety,

food preparation, safe play and age appropriate activities. We also discuss accepting babysitting jobs, negotiating pay, and exploring and early childhood education career. Pizza and milk or participants can bring their own lunch. (Certificates provided.)

Fun With Drones May 8, 15 & 22, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. $20, Harms Center Do you have a drone you’re not quite sure how to fly? Do you know what you can and can’t do with a drone? Get current information and handson practice during this flying school for hobbyist drone pilots. Bring extra batteries and your charger. Complete the obstacle course and earn your unofficial “drone pilot’s license.” Meet other drone enthusiasts like Bill Loring and Tracy O’Neal, who lead the class.

Principles of Fly Casting May 9, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., $20 Harms Center If you thought casting a fly line was too complicated for you to master, you may be surprised to learn that with the knowledge of a few basic principles, a little personal instruction, and some practice, anyone can become proficient enough at fly casting to enjoy the sport of fly fishing. In this class, we review the basic principles of fly casting, learn common fly casting techniques used in a variety of fly fishing situations, and devote time to personal instruction and casting practice. Participants must bring a properly set up and functional fly rod to class for personal instruction and practice. To experience maximum learning from this class, the participant should also have completed the Introduction to Fly Fishing class. Class size is limited in order to provide individualized attention and instruction.

Remembering World War I: Its Lasting Influences Into the 21st Century Interest in World War II remains high with the public; however most of the civilian and government programs, military innovations, use of media, gender roles, and world involvement to name a few, did not begin with this war. It began with the first World War that set into motion the 20th century, and its ramifications are felt well in to the 21st century. In April 2017, the U.S. commemorates its 100th anniversary involvement in this “war to end all wars.” This spring is an opportunity to learn more about this war and how it affected society.

Do you want to get a better sense of what that would have been like? Or, maybe you like survival shows and enjoy seeing primitive skills put to the test. Either way, this atlatl course is right up your alley. Whether you are a history nut or a woods bum in training, this class has something to offer for you. This highly hands-on and engaging lesson covers Stone Age history in a fun and interactive way. We start by putting this incredibly important time period into perspective in a way that is easy to understand. With your historical knowledge in place, you begin learning all about our oldest legitimate projectile; the atlatl. After learning about its parts, history, and the science behind how it works, you are ready to create your very own functional atlatl using your own two hands. By the end of the morning you will no doubt be having success with your primitive weapon and learning the skills of our ancestors. With a little luck, you may get the feeling you are walking in the moccasin tracks of the past, if only for a few brief steps. Come and join us for this one-of-a-kind historical class!

With the right instruction, improve your observation skills with a few fool-proof methods.
