Passport Passengers

Passport Passengers provides an opportunity for senior citizens in our community to come together and learn about countries around the world. Come and share your experiences of your personal travels and learn from those of others. We also experience snacks and activities unique to each country. Participants receive a passport booklet during the first session and a sticker for each session they attend. At the end of the 11 sessions, we put the books with the most stickers in a drawing for a grand prize! Cupcakes are simply irresistible-single servings of delicious cakes and frosting dressed up in perfect little packages. In this course, student chefs participate in a number “challenges” to see who is the “boss” of each challenge. Some of the challenges are individual challenges and some are group challenges.

Feb 6 – 9

Learn about the ancient art of mosaic and how to make your own artwork using a variety of fun materials. Make a mobile, name plaque, box, and structure using the mosaic technique. Cut, glue, read, and create as you lean about how traditional and modern mosaics are made.

Imagine, explore, discover, and create products using a variety of mediums of art. Use puffy paint, neon paint, liquid watercolors, pearl paints, glitter paint, and glow-in-the-dark paint. Create works of art inspired by famous artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Georgia O’Keeffe.

Beads, safety pins, leather, and washers! Does that sound intriguing? These are just a few of the materials you’ll explore and create with in this course. Create bracelets, rings, and necklaces for all occasions. Embellish items such as picture frames and beads.

Jammin’ in the Jungle Mar 16 – 19

Let’s go Jammin’ in the Jungle! Explore the mysteries of exotic plants and animals through beautiful books and interesting activities. Make a rain stick, rubber

blubber, and your own chewing gum! Each day includes creating and enjoying a rain forest snack such as jungle juice, piranha ponds, and butterfly cookies. Learning is enhanced with several science skills including: probability, biodiversity, and horticulture. Come and join the fun of this jungle adventure!

Awesome Origami Mar 27 – 30

Are you ready to dive into the art of Japanese paper folding? In this course, students will create water and land animals, various types of boats, paper balloons, and much more. Read and research about water colors to create Haiku Poetry and discover Kanji and other wonders of the Japanese culture.

Cool Chemistry Apr 3 – 6

Explore chemistry concepts in engaging and fun ways. In this course, students will create and explore such things as crystal gardens, kazoos, gobs of goo, lava cups, fizz-inflators, and much more! Chemistry has never been so much fun!

Math ... It’s an Art Apr 10 – 13

Generate many creative projects to explore math concepts and build essential skills through art. Learn about math concepts like geometry, measurement, place value, and much more. This class teaches math in a way most kids have never experienced.

Chef’s Delight Apr 24 – 27

This course is sure to be a delightful experience for young chefs. Several educational skills will be enhanced, as they share stories, participate in cooking exercises, learn science concepts, and develop good work habits as they work cooperatively in groups. What better motivator for learning than a good story and fun food?

Duct Tape Dynasty May 1 – 4

Duck tape solves everything, right? Use duct tape to decorate jars, composition books, pencil pouches, pencils, and more. You will also create items such as pouches, wallets, flowers and bracelets using only tape.

Spaced Out May 8 – 11

To infinity and beyond! This course is all about space! Learn about the planets, solar system, and what it is like to be an astronaut.

Woodcarving Jan 17, 24, 31 & Feb 7 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., $20 Alliance Campus, Room 015 Learn a style of carving called Chip Carving, which is a decorative style woodcarving. Instructor Chan Schwartz teaches you how to lay out a pattern and then carve it. Chan Schwartz has been carving since 1989 and has taught classes in Nebraska, Texas, Arizona, and South Dakota. He has woodcarving knives available for purchase the first night of class. The cost for a knife is $16. This class is for students 18 and older.

Harms Center Ko Heichi Kickboxing is a great workout full of energy, fun, music, and extreme calorieburning potential, but this is not just another aerobics class. You learn proper safe martial arts techniques in a well-rounded full body workout and each class highlights some aspect of personal safety or self-defense. Bushidokan Martial Arts training is a great way to build stamina, increase strength, speed, flexibility, balance, and overall body conditioning but if it doesn’t teach you how to fight and defend yourself, then something is wrong! The sport shares some features of other racquet sports; the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, a net, and rules similar to tennis, with a few modifications. Interacting With Traditional News Media Jan 31, 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., $25 Harms Center A two-hour workshop for anyone who interacts with the news media. Learn how to write an effective press release, and how to work with individual media deadlines in order to get your information published. This workshop is for marketing and PR professionals, as well as church secretaries or anyone whose role it is to get their organization’s message to the public.

Intermediate Sign Language Feb 14 – Mar 14 (T), 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. $30, Harms Center This class is a continuation of the Basic Sign Language class. Students are encouraged to have taken Basic Sign Language or have knowledge of basic signs. This course not only deals with more vocabulary, but also includes the use of non-manual markers, facial expression, classifiers, and the grammatical structure of American Sign Language. We also work on receptive sign skills and continue with the fluency of fingerspelling. This is an interactive course for those who consider their sign skills as intermediate.

Civilian Response to an Active Shooter Feb 15, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. FREE! Harms Center • Active killing events, what are they? • When in public what you should do in response to an active killer event. • How law enforcement is trained to respond and what you need to know. • Learn how to control your heart rate with combat breathing so you can respond under high stress. • Learn how to avoid, deny, and defend during an active killer event. • Learn why public schools across the country are adopting a standard to enhance student and staff safety during an incident or emergency. • The “Standard Response Protocol” Lockout, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter!

Driver’s Education Feb 20 – Mar 22 (M, W) 6:00 − 8:00 p.m. $195, Harms Center This course is a state approved driver safety course for high school students ages 14 – 17. This course is not state approved for adults 18 years of age and older. Students complete 20 hours of classroom time and drive two to five hours with a Competency Certified Instructor. Eligible students must obtain a valid learner’s permit and be at least 14 years of age by Oct. 15, 2017 to register.

We also touch on co-writing and presenting your song live. Don’t play an instrument? No problem. The instructor provides piano or guitar help, as needed. By completion, you will have written (and hopefully performed) your own original song. It’s helpful if you play guitar (or piano) but not required. Bring your guitar.

Harms Center Eyeballing vodka, snorting bourbon, B.H.O., Krokodil, Roboing, Triple C, crank, K-2, smack, edibles, 420, to name a few. Do you know what these drugs are? Many local students do ranging from 5th through 12th grade. The United States is four percent of the world’s population yet we are consuming two thirds of the world’s illegal drugs. This does not include the prescription drug abuse problem in this country. Learn how todays high potent marijuana is impacting our youth and a gateway to many other illicit drugs. Learn how you can tell if your child or grandchild is using drugs. Simple things you can do that can make a difference and prevent drug use in your family.

Learn the importance of and how to change a furnace filter, swap light switches, repair a hole in the drywall, and find the best tools for the job. We demystify toilet leaks and discuss whether fixing a faucet or replacing it is right for you. You learn how to replace your own sprinkler heads and much more! Remembering World War I: Its Lasting Influences Into the 21st Century Interest in World War II remains high with the public; however most of the civilian and government programs, military innovations, use of media, gender roles, and world involvement to name a few, did not begin with this war. It began with the first World War that set into motion the 20th century, and its ramifications are felt well in to the 21st century. In April 2017, the U.S. commemorates its 100th anniversary involvement in this “war to end all wars.” This spring is an opportunity to learn more about this war and how it affected society.

Intro to Fly Fishing

Principles of Fly Casting

May 2 & 4, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., $25 Harms Center Fly fishing is generally thought of as a sport best enjoyed in the setting of mountain streams catching trout or salmon. While these waters are great places to fly fish, you can catch a variety of fish and have the same great fly fishing experiences in your local warm water lakes and ponds. This class helps the beginning or novice fly fisher learn the basic principles associated with fly fishing. Learn more about more about the equipment necessary for getting started, how to properly set up a fly rod, become familiar with the basic principles of fly casting, and understand the use of flies and common fly fishing strategies necessary for catching fish in streams, lakes, and ponds. This class is required in order to register for Principles of Fly Casting.

May 9, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., $20 Harms Center If you thought casting a fly line was too complicated for you to master, you’ll be surprised to learn that with the knowledge of a few basic principles, a little personal instruction, and some practice, anyone can become proficient enough at fly casting to enjoy the sport of fly fishing. In this class, we review the basic principles of fly casting, learn common fly casting techniques used in a variety of fly fishing situations, and devote time to personal instruction and casting practice. Participants must bring a properly set up and functional fly rod to class for personal instruction and practice. To experience maximum learning from this class, the participant should also have completed the Introduction to Fly Fishing class. Class size is limited in order to provide individualized attention and instruction.
