Woodcarving Jan 17, 24, 31 & Feb 7 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., $20 Alliance Campus, Room 015 Learn a style of carving called Chip Carving, which is a decorative style woodcarving. Instructor Chan Schwartz teaches you how to lay out a pattern and then carve it. Chan Schwartz has been carving since 1989 and has taught classes in Nebraska, Texas, Arizona, and South Dakota. He has woodcarving knives available for purchase the first night of class. The cost for a knife is $16. This class is for students 18 and older.

Harms Center Ko Heichi Kickboxing is a great workout full of energy, fun, music, and extreme calorieburning potential, but this is not just another aerobics class. You learn proper safe martial arts techniques in a well-rounded full body workout and each class highlights some aspect of personal safety or self-defense. Bushidokan Martial Arts training is a great way to build stamina, increase strength, speed, flexibility, balance, and overall body conditioning but if it doesn’t teach you how to fight and defend yourself, then something is wrong! The sport shares some features of other racquet sports; the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, a net, and rules similar to tennis, with a few modifications. Interacting With Traditional News Media Jan 31, 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., $25 Harms Center A two-hour workshop for anyone who interacts with the news media. Learn how to write an effective press release, and how to work with individual media deadlines in order to get your information published. This workshop is for marketing and PR professionals, as well as church secretaries or anyone whose role it is to get their organization’s message to the public.
Intermediate Sign Language Feb 14 – Mar 14 (T), 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. $30, Harms Center This class is a continuation of the Basic Sign Language class. Students are encouraged to have taken Basic Sign Language or have knowledge of basic signs. This course not only deals with more vocabulary, but also includes the use of non-manual markers, facial expression, classifiers, and the grammatical structure of American Sign Language. We also work on receptive sign skills and continue with the fluency of fingerspelling. This is an interactive course for those who consider their sign skills as intermediate.

$38, Harms Center Have you ever wanted to write a song? Now you can! This course covers the basic elements of songwriting: form, structure, melody, and lyrics. We also touch on co-writing and presenting your song live. Don’t play an instrument? No problem. The instructor provides piano or guitar help, as needed. By completion, you will have written (and hopefully performed) your own original song. It’s helpful if you play guitar (or piano) but not required. Bring your guitar.
Remembering World War I: Its Lasting Influences Into the 21st Century Interest in World War II remains high with the public; however most of the civilian and government programs, military innovations, use of media, gender roles, and world involvement to name a few, did not begin with this war. It began with the first World War that set into motion the 20th century, and its ramifications are felt well in to the 21st century. In April 2017, the U.S. commemorates its 100th anniversary involvement in this “war to end all wars.” This spring is an opportunity to learn more about this war and how it affected society.

Many local students do ranging from 5th through 12th grade. The United States is four percent of the world’s population yet we are consuming two thirds of the world’s illegal drugs. Intro to Fly Fishing May 2 & 4, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., $25 Harms Center Fly fishing is generally thought of as a sport best enjoyed in the setting of mountain streams catching trout or salmon. While these waters are great places to fly fish, you can catch a variety of fish and have the same great fly fishing experiences in your local warm water lakes and ponds. This class helps the beginning or novice fly fisher learn the basic principles associated with fly fishing. Learn more about more about the equipment necessary for getting started, how to properly set up a fly rod, become familiar with the basic principles of fly casting, and understand the use of flies and common fly fishing strategies necessary for catching fish in streams, lakes, and ponds. This class is required in order to register for Principles of Fly Casting.
Principles of Fly Casting May 9, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., $20 Harms Center If you thought casting a fly line was too complicated for you to master, you’ll be surprised to learn that with the knowledge of a few basic principles, a little personal instruction, and some practice, anyone can become proficient enough at fly casting to enjoy the sport of fly fishing. In this class, we review the basic principles of fly casting, learn common fly casting techniques used in a variety of fly fishing situations, and devote time to personal instruction and casting practice. Participants must bring a properly set up and functional fly rod to class for personal instruction and practice. To experience maximum learning from this class, the participant should also have completed the Introduction to Fly Fishing class. Class size is limited in order to provide individualized attention and instruction.

Passport Passengers provides an opportunity for senior citizens in our community to come together and learn about countries around the world. Come and share your experiences of your personal travels and learn from those of others. We also experience snacks and activities unique to each country. Participants receive a passport booklet during the first session and a sticker for each session they attend. At the end of the 11 sessions, we put the books with the most stickers in a drawing for a grand prize!
