The late Antony (Tony) Adler 1934 - 2015 Tony was born and brought up in Oldham. His father, Dr Sam Adler, was a GP who practiced in Oldham. Tony attended Manchester Grammar School (where his father had been head boy) and went on to study law at Manchester University where he graduated with an honours degree in law in 1954. After he qualified as a solicitor, Tony worked at Granada TV and then in London but he returned to Oldham in 1962 and set up his own practice of A J Adler and Co. He continued to work as a solicitor in Oldham until well into his seventies. Tony was well known in the Oldham area. During his time there, he was a councillor, chairman of the Oldham District Health Authority, president of the Oldham Law Association, founder member of the Oldham Race Relation Committee, a freemason and a round tabler. In what must have been his little spare time, he was also a collector. When he died, he owned almost two hundred original paintings but his main collection was his model railway collection which he started in 1978. Tony was interviewed by a reporter from the Oldham Chronicle in 1979 about his "latest hobby." He explained that it all started when he sheltered from the rain in the doorway of a model railway shop in Manchester and saw the model trains on display. He thought "that must be a relaxing hobby" and that he "would indulge in a small layout for fun." Within eighteen months he had collected 300 locomotives, 500 coaches and wagons and 540 feet of track. He said at the time "it fascinates me and it's very therapeutic." This love of model railways and his love of collecting continued until his death. By then he had built a large wooden construction in his rear garden to house a magnificent layout. Indeed, one of his last outings was to a model railway fair at which he continued to buy to add to his collection. Following Tony's death, his collection that he amassed over thirty five years is now being auctioned. All the proceeds from the auction will go to charitable causes in accordance with his wishes.
