FINDING THE PROPER MARTIAL ARTS WEAPON The proper selection of a weapon is pivotal to a striking performance in the field of martial arts. Each combat form has its own set of techniques, rules and use of a unique weapon that is crucial to the fight. While there are a number of traditionally designed weapons available, each has a distinctive purpose and construction that contributes to the combat practice. The difference lies in the structure, material used and whether the weapon is used simply for demonstration or for actual combat.

For students who are a novice in this field and have just begun their training, deciding on the right martial arts weapon could be a complex task. The selection of an effectively functional weapon is achieved with expert opinion and thorough knowledge regarding them. Here are some tips that can give you a clear idea about the role of each instrument which will definitely help you find the right one: For Demonstration: The Bo is basically a balancing weapon used to help you enhance your stamina and strength by carrying heavier loads on your back. On the other hand the “Nunchaku” and “Sai” are defensive weapons while the sword, the Escrima and the Kama are used for attacking opponents.

If you are using these combat instruments for demonstration make sure it is made of light material like light wood that will allow you greater speed and control. In case you need to hold an eye catching display before combat, a weapon with motifs, chrome and colour can draw the attention of an audience.

For Hard Core Training & Speed Development: Tough martial art training sessions require learners to bear physical strain and burden to the maximum. It is the reason why heavier and tougher materials are used as weapons during this stage. For Bo, Escrima and Nunchakus a heavier hardwood material is the right choice; while Sai should be made of chrome and Kama should have metal blades with hardwood handles. This will maximise the stamina of the trainee and help build immense muscle power and control to handle distinctively lighter objects. It provides the required speed and control to handle much lighter weapons and use faster techniques of defence and attack. For Combat Practice: Weapons for combat practice are specifically designed to prevent severe injuries or harmful physical damage during fights. For beginners who are into regular martial art practice need to ensure that the fighting instruments chosen by them must be harmless. For example while choosing a Kama find one with plastic or wooden blades instead of metal ones. Similarly for Escrima sticks and Nunchakus look for ones that are padded. These will assist you in carrying out practice sessions without the risk of accidental damages or injuries.

Selecting the Size: Every weapon has its own parameter to decide on the size. A Bo or Staff is usually just longer than the person holding it – though they come off the shelf as standard lengths, they may be custom built to an ideal length for each practitioner. Moreover, it is essential that the Bo has a good grip. In case of Nunchakus, it is advisable to use one which is 8 or 10 inches for beginners and 12 or 14 inches for adults. Choosing a Sai requires technique rather than specification. You need to hold it backward towards the elbow. To ensure complete protection and ascertaining that the Sai is perfect for you, the blade needs to extend one inch past the elbow. However, in order to choose an Escrima you need to consult your instructor and find out what he considers appropriate for class. While these are some basic pointers that give you a brief idea to select the perfect martial art weapon, you must consult and take the advice of experts, your instructors and conduct a thorough research to decide on the best ones.
