WhatWeLove AboutState

Raya El-Hajjar USM

What I always remember most from the JCL is the spirit and how friendly people are. Every little tradition during every gathering, the “oohs” and “ahhs,” and being terrified to lose your name card so you don’t have to sing in front of everyone: every moment made me feel so welcomed, and reminded me why I love Latin and the WJCL.

Elise Yamat DSHA

Convention was filled with vibrant energy, heartfelt moments, and credible creativity One of the most memorable aspects was the close nd among the officers. Whether it was running through GA scripts filming Instagram reels, the boards’ friendship definitely spread that CLove. As always, I absolutely loved the creativity showcased durin it. Each delegation brought their A-game, interpreting the themes w ginality and enthusiasm From elaborate costumes to innovative che e creativity on display was nothing short of amazing. I can’t wait to s everyone ’ s accomplishments and Nats and next year ’ s State!

Ayushi Candel BA

When you hear “Latin Convention”, you think it’s going to be anything but fun, you think it’s going to be students and teachers sitting around and speaking Latin My first Latin Convention ever was over zoom I’d like to say it was fun because my team won Certamen, but it lacked the spirit of the WJCL, something you can’t quite understand until you ’ ve experienced it. This past convention, I had the honor of serving as the WJCL Parliamentarian, and my favorite part of all of it, was not the amendments, or voting procedures, or Robert’s Rules of Order (contrary to popular belief), but the friends I was able to make Whether it was Ms Bunge’s pep talks, rant sessions with Elise, the late night madness with the board at convention, shenanigans with my ALR class, spirit and the minutes of just yelling Latin cheers, the random elevator conversations with people from so many different schools over Wisconsin, the WJCL truly is a community filled with Latin buffs, nerds, geeks, and those who just want to be a part of the WJCL spirit This past convention was my favorite, and I truly hope everyone in the WJCL can experience one like it.!

Cate Tamburrino DSHA

My favorite part of convention is the toga dinner. It’s super fun to spend the night in our togas and spend time with friends.

I love that there were many activities: if you didn’t want to do Certamen you could do essays, art, quizzes, speaking, etc. This made it really easy to find something I was interested in, allowing me to be fully involved in the language. The food was also really good and definitely my favorite memory.

KK Lawless DSHA

I love how convention is a place where I can meet new people from across Wisconsin. I feel more connected to the community as well as my own classmates through friendly competition!!

Jillian Jones BA

I truly love the WJCL and the spirit like how we all lose our voices but still continue and pretend that we did not just lose our voices. Since everybody at convention does spirit, I don’t feel awkward screaming because I know that I am not the only one which is literally the point of spirit. The aftermath of spirit is also funny because, at least what my school does is, we pass around a big bag of cough drops for all of us and a couple people drop the bag and then we all laugh.

Angela Wang USM

Spirit was a way for me to see how passionate schools were for latin.

Bobby Walsh MUHS

I had so much fun at the WJCL Latin Convention! I met new people through a common interest, and got to experience this amazing time that I won’t ever forget.

Ammar Pasha BA

I’ve been to state twice, and it’s safe to say it’s probably the thing I look forward to in these horrid Wisconsin winters. I love the spirit at the GA’s, the competitiveness of DoorDec and the elections, and the hype of the dances. I thought it wouldn’t be fun, and every time state proved me wrong. I hope to see you at nats and Valete!”

SALVETE OMNES,

First and foremost, I want to express my utmost gratitude for electing me as your WJCL Editor. I can not wait to serve this community as I attempt to improve connectivity and interactivity within the WJCL through the Torch. Also, I want to give a huge shout-out to all of you that I reached out to; you played a massive role in this Torch, and I could not have done it without you! Also, I am hoping to create a column with student art or writing, so if you would like to submit a piece of artwork or a short story please text 262-599-3869 for more information. Lastly, I absolutely loved making this Torch, and I hope you enjoyed it!
