Our mission statement... Straight from the Top!

hicago Comic Con was incredible! This year was especially fun because I was able to actually meet and hang out with so many great and new talents from the comic book industry.

It took me a long time to walk through the entire artist alley—over 500 creators. There was something for everyone, whether you’re a new or longtime fan. The panels were packed, the costumes were amazing and the celebs could not have been friendlier. So many great highlights you’ll see in this week’s issue. I bet you wish you were there (or could go back). See ya!

Best G.I. Joe/Transformers

One of the coolest toy crossovers ever merges two of our favorite ’80s properties

B

ack in the ’80s G.I. Joe and Transformers were gigantically popular with a series of action figures, comic books, cartoons, and animated movies keeping fans enthralled. In 1987 the two titanic toy franchises met for the first time in a four-issue mini-series called G.I. Joe and the Transformers. To celebrate that momentous meeting of the minds (and fists), Hasbro has created an awesome crossover toy set, which you can track down online. The combo includes a G.I. Joe scale Skystriker jet painted to look like Decepticon Starscream with a Cobra Commander figure to fly him! To make the set all the better, Cobra Commander comes with a gun that looks exactly like ’80s-era Megatron used to when he transformed into a blaster! Even the packaging is great, thanks to a mock-up of the non-existent fifth issue of the ’87 crossover comic emblazoned on the box. This is, all around, the coolest toy crossover we’ve seen in some time! — TJ Dietsch

his French import who studied at the Sorbonne (which is kind of a big deal, guys) has been making the rounds in Europe ever since his debut on the Comix 2000 anthology. His stateside debut graphic novel, Lucille, from Top Shelf, has been creating quite a buzz amongst those who got a chance to read a preview copy, and tells the tale of two teenagers who embark on a tour of Europe and discover they have lots of emotional baggage in common. Hop on board with Debeurme’s work, and be the first to impress your hipster friends by saying “Oh, I liked his early French work better.” — Casey Seijas

hey say it’s hard to find a good woman. That’s total BS! If the psychopath who is The Joker can find himself a good woman in Harley Quinn—a hot, petite blonde who’s not afraid to throw a punch at Batman—then good women are bountiful. Harley, who made her debut in 1992 on “Batman: The Animated Series,” was such a huge hit with fans, she was later sewn into DC Comics and eventually DC video games! Probably the hottest thing about HQ is her sense of humor. We love a chick who can spit out jokes. — Carlos Mejia

fter the cracked-teeth bloodletting of the amateur superheroes in “Kick-Ass” and “Super,” director Leon Ford’s “Griff the Invisible” could be a welcome change: the many-abbed Ryan Kwanten (“True Blood”) stars as Griff, a bashful office worker who fancies himself a rubberoutfitted avenger by night. Griff’s posturing masks his insecurity, both in life and in a potential love affair with Melody (Maeve Dermody). Ford told QuickFlix that the inspiration for “Griff” came about when he saw a child playing outside a café. “What if there was a character that is my age that didn’t give it up when the rest of us gave it up?” Ford said. “That sort of playfulness became so important in his head it sort of took over reality.” Can he snap out of his reverie in time to find something real? And can audiences take a breather from the high-octane exploits of “Captain America” and “Green Lantern” to enjoy a muted Australian superhero romantic comedy? Find out when the film enters limited release August 19. — Jake Rossen

Cartoon Spike as lively as his normal dead self

ny time a property makes the jump from live-action to animation, there’s always a worry that the characters just won’t look as cool. That was one of the worries when we heard about the Spike statue from Electric Tiki’s Tooned-Up Television line of statues based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Thankfully our fears were unfounded as Spike transcends cartooniness and looks pretty bad-ass regardless of format! Spike here is the first male figure in the line, and he comes with all kinds of display options. Check these out: two heads—human and vampire, of course—as well as a trio of hands, one in a fist and the other two holding a spike and an axe respectively. RELOADING THE FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER

D

ifferentiating yourself in the overcrowded, ultra-competitive first-person shooter market is a daunting task. But DICE, developer of Electronic Art’s Battlefield 3, is up to the challenge. Armed with a razor-sharp focus on five key design pillars and a brand-new horsepower-pushing engine, the team’s poised to deliver a genre-defining blockbuster this fall.

ANIMATION Utilizing the same technology that brings EA Sports’ title’s athletes to life, Battlefield 3’s replacing the usual FPS bullet fodder, with deeply detailed, intricately animated characters. SCALE From expansive outdoor urban environments to stretching desert landscapes, the firingon-all-cylinders Frostbite 2 engine allows Battlefield 3 to feature way more than claustrophobic corridors and generic beenthere-seen-that settings. RENDERING Jaw-droppingly detailed smoke, debris, and dust effects give Battlefield 3’s destructiondriven encounters an in-your-face feel. Dramatic lighting and shadowing trickery further sell the cinematic experience. AUDIO In addition to immersion-amping ambient audio, Battlefield 3’s weapon sounds change based on a variety of factors. From interior echoed shots to ear-rattling outdoor explosions, the aural experience will quickly justify a kickin’ surround-sound purchase. DESTRUCTION The Battlefield series’ bread-and-butter destruction effects have been ratcheted to screen-swallowing new levels thanks to Frostbite 2. From cover-chipping bullets to city-leveling earthquakes, nearly every action coughs up debris with stunning realism. — Matt Cabral

The Batman You’ve

nd here we thought the days of wacky versions of Batman were sequestered to the days of the Silver Age or Kenner putting out toys like Samurai Batman and Egyptian Batman in the ’90s. Actually, now that we think about it, maybe writer Grant Morrison was playing with his old school Legends of Batman figures when he wrote Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne, a story that featured Bats hopping through different time periods eventually bringing him back to modern times.

You might be used to seeing Bruce Wayne running around in the traditional cape and cowl, but thanks to Morrison, he also became a caveman, a pirate, a Puritan and a cowboy. DC Direct channeled that Kenner, Morrison and cover artist Andy Kubert spirit when creating the Return of Bruce Wayne line of figures which consists of Prehistoric, High Seas, Witch Hunter, and Wild West versions of Batman. It’s possible you’ve seen Batman in some of these get-ups before, but you’ve never seen them look this good! — TJ Dietsch

‘Conan’

Things

we’re psyched

about

t’s been nearly 30 years, but Robert E. Howard’s legendary barbarian is finally pumped up enough to make a welcome return to the big screen: “Conan the Barbarian” stars “Game of Thrones” actor Jason Momoa as the savage sword-slinger, a feat that took over a decade of pre-production work and hints at everything from an Arnold return to an aborted animated feature.

While you polish your 3-D glasses in time for its August 19 release, check out this scorecard of other films inspired by Howard—including one starring the writer himself.

Conan the Barbarian (1982) Arnold Schwarzenegger’s biceps get top billing in this straight-faced take on the legend: YouTube-worthy scenes abound, including the Tree of Woe, the Wheel of Pain, and Arnold’s famous “see your enemies driven before you” monologue.

Conan the Destroyer (1984) Everything the first “Conan” tried to avoid: campy, misplaced humor, aided in no part by crummy effects work and the inexplicable appearance of non-actor Wilt Chamberlain. Shaquille O’Neal had been warned.

Red Sonya (1985) Try to follow this: though Howard created a character named Red Sonya, this film is actually based on the Marvel comic heroine…who in turn was an amalgamation of several Howard creations. Oh, and Arnold appears, but not as Conan. Wheel of Pain, indeed.

Kull the Conqueror (1997) “Hercules” star Kevin Sorbo’s film career was not to be, as this adaptation of a second-stringer Howard creation suffers from a botched script and Sorbo’s own reluctance to take any of it seriously.

Solomon Cane (2010) A not-half-bad take on Howard’s “puritan avenger”—a kind of 16th century Punisher—was granted only limited release despite a $40 million budget and plans to turn it into a trilogy. Don’t hold your breath.

The Whole Wide World (1996) Vincent D’Onofrio does a grand job playing the bombastic Howard in this biopic that focuses on the writer’s depressive state over his ailing mother. It’s not exactly fun, but the scene where Howard excitedly describes Conan to a date is to fiction writers what “Hoosiers” is to sports fans. — Jake Rossen

E

ver since the Nintendo Wii introduced motion-sensitive, gesture-based gaming back in 2006, all we’ve really wanted is a title that puts us in front our televisions, swinging a faux lightsaber like a Sith-slaying badass. Kinect Star Wars, LucasArts’ upcoming Kinect-enabled entry, may finally fulfill this request, allowing us to live out all our Jedi-wannabe dreams right in our own living rooms.

Using the power of Microsoft’s controllerfree tech, Kinect Star Wars aims to immerse players in George Lucas’ rich sci-fi universe like never before. Featuring iconic characters and environments from the films, the title has players unleashing a variety of full-body motions to hack and slash their lightsaber through familiar threats from the galaxy far, far away. We got to test out the swinging mechanics and came away impressed by the fluidness and responsive of the combat. Sure, we looked a bit like a drunken monkey, but our on-screen avatar delivered death with cinematic flair. Whether transforming droids into scrap-metal or engaging in more heated battles with dual-saberwielding foes, the intuitive controls could see Darth Vader upgrading to a Kinect. While our demo didn’t cover all the features promised for the final game, Kinect Star Wars will also include Force powers, vehicle piloting, and light puzzlesolving--all directed by body motions. If the rest of the experience can match the immersive, lightning-quick lightsaber combat, we’ll happily brave a Kessel Run to Best Buy for a copy when it ships this holiday. — Matt Cabral

heck the calendar—yup, we’re officially in the dog days of summer. The weather’s stuck in the 90’s, the air is stagnant, and the only activity that seems worth doing right now is sitting in a cool spot reading comics, watching movies, or playing video games.

In celebration of this time of year, Wizard World salutes the best comic book canines to which the end of summer is named after. Sure, it’s a stretch, but come on—it’s the Dog Days! The last thing we wanna be doing right now is working!

LOCKJAW Without question one of the most popular dogs in comics, Lockjaw serves as stalwart member of Marvel’s Inhumans with powers of teleportation and “super-canine” strength, which basically means—much to the chagrin of most normal dogs—he can eat pretty much anything and never get sick.

BATTLEPUG What started out as a T-shirt design by comic artist Mike Norton has evolved into one of the best webcomics to date. And although the premise seems silly (and it certainly has a healthy dose of silliness), it’s also a great source of epic Conan the Barbarian badassery.

JASON X-12 Indie icon James Kochalka describes his real life friend Jason Cooley as “a dog with a robot brain from outer space,” but in most of his strips, he serves more as a voice of reason…trapped within the body of a dog.

1 (a.k.a. BANDIT) One of the three cybernetically enhanced house pets from Grant Morrison’s We3, Bandit played the role of the loyal, obedient member who only wanted to be a “GUD DOG” to his masters.

YANKEE POODLE An original member of Captain Carrot’s Zoo Crew, Yankee Poodle possesses the power of “animal magnetism” (or as most comic readers refer to it, telekinesis)—not to mention, one of the most righteous afros this side of Earth-C! — Casey Seijas

In addition to dual-analog sticks and all of the expected face buttons and shoulder triggers, the Vita’s upping the intuitive interface with front touchscreen controls, Six-axis motion-sensing, and a rear touch-pad. During a demo of Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Nathan Drake’s portable debut, we got to see--and feel--all these tech tricks in action. Dream Wizard World caught up with fan-favorites Felicia Day and Jeff Lewis to geek out on comics, video games, and, of course, Season 5 of ‘The Guild’

I said. You just have to keep making products, sharing it, and being an advocate for your own creativity. Lewis: And since you have creative control over it, you should do exactly what you find funny or you find interesting or you like. What’s it like seeing people cosplaying as you? Day: I think the cosplay and the artists selling prints of us are the ultimate compliment. It means that we’ve started something that the fans have taken and run with. We are very “indie roots,” so that’s like the biggest compliment for us to see that. Lewis: If you told me that someone would be dressing as me with a bald cap and that suit, that’s crazy, but it’s incredible to see.

I

f you’ve played World of Warcraft for more than five minutes, you know about The Guild, the smash-hit web series about a tight-knit group of MMO players whose exploits outside the game are funnier than their in-game hysterics. The Guild star/creator Felicia Day (Codex) and fellow star Jeff Lewis (Vork) chatted with a seemingly endless stream of fans throughout this last weekend at the Wizard World Chicago Comic Con. With a little patience, we were able to catch up with the dynamic digital duo as they wrapped up their final day at the con to talk success, web series, and their other projects.

Are you all ever surprised at how successful The Guild has been? Lewis: Well, not as surprised as I used to be. The first year was surprising, but it’s been incredible. Day: We’ve been doing the show since 2007, so it’s not been like an overnight success story, but we’re really excited to still be doing a show after five seasons when most TV shows don’t even make it this long. It’s all because of the fans driving it. What advice would you give to anyone trying to do a web series? Day: I would say that 90 percent of your work is after your videos are made. It’s not gonna be an overnight success, like

Do you have any other projects going on right now that you’d like to let people know about? Lewis: We’re trying to push the second season of the Jeff Lewis 5-Minute Comedy Hour and we’re trying to raise money through donations on Kickstarter. We’re trying to raise $25,000. We’re trying to make a final push by September 1, so anywhere from $1 to $5,000 is welcome and there’s awards that go with it. So please donate. Day: And I’m on Eureka for the rest of season 4.5 through season 5. That’s exciting. The Guild is rolling out right now. Season 5 is set in a fan convention, so hopefully people who read this would be really interested in seeing how I wrote a whole season as homage to fan conventions, which have built our show click-by-click. What comics are you all enjoying right now? Day: I’ve been enjoying Chew a lot, and Morning Glories. Those are two of my most “go-to.” I need to really catch up on a bunch of other stuff. Lewis: I’ve got nothing. I’ve got a baby. That’s my comic. Which videogames are you all playing right now, or looking forward to? Lewis: I’m enjoying Black Ops and Left4Dead. I think those are the two I mainly play. Day: I’m playing a little WoW and playing my second Dragon Age playthrough. I’m really looking forward to Skyrim and Diablo III. Hopefully, that’ll come out this year. There are some great games coming out later this year. I’ve gotta retire to play them all. — Roger Riddell

P

The Eisner Awardwinning artist talks about her favorite reads, manga, and how the latest Doctor Who shapes up

ia Guerra is best known for her illustration work on the creator-owned Y: The Last Man with co-creator Brian K. Vaughn, but she’s been up to a lot since wrapping up her work on the Vertigo title that provided her big break. In the last three years, the Eisner and Shuster Award-winning Canadian artist has logged time on IDW’s Doctor Who: The Forgotten, Torchwood, and contributed to the 2008 Image anthology of stories inspired by the songs of Tori Amos, Comic Book Tattoo. We caught up with Guerra at Wizard World Chicago’s packed Artist Alley to find out what she’s been up to lately, what she’d like to work on, and to talk Doctor Who. What have you been working on lately? Not a whole lot. I’ve been taking advantage of the time to spend with family that I just haven’t had before because Y was a real full-time gig, or beyond full-time. It was a lot of hours. Right now, I’ve just been doing small projects. I’m just working on some solo projects and trying to get them off the ground. I’m taking my time with them so they look good, and that’s basically it. What are you reading right now? I’m reading Powers, a lot of Marvel, Fear Itself, anything by Joss Whedon. A lot of what I’m reading right now is manga– 20th Century Boys, Pluto. I can really relate to their [manga artists and writers] struggle to break in and really like the way the story is presented. What would your dream project be if you could draw anything? It used to be Buckaroo Banzai. I really liked that movie as a kid, and there was this idea bouncing around that it was gonna be made into a TV show in the late ’90s. Dark Horse had the rights for it when they did make it into a show. I did a bunch of samples, because I really wanted to try out for this book, but the show never made it, so the book never made it.

12

Things

we’re psyched

about

Right now, I think some cool sci-fi stuff would be fun. I don’t really think about specifics, although I think Starfire would be really pretty good. Do you ever feel any pressure when you’re drawing established characters like Doctor Who or the Simpsons? Yes, because it’s like I don’t feel like my art could ever do this justice. The Simpsons one, at least, because it was “Treehouse of Horror,” you can allow your own style to bleed through. It was fun, but it was so hard because you’re always glued to the model sheets to see if you can get it exactly just right. I always look at my stuff and go, “This is so far from what it’s supposed to look like!” But it was still a lot of fun. And Doctor Who was the same thing, you know? “I’m gonna make them look awful” or “I’m gonna make them look like Yorick,” so you have to always be mindful of that, but it was still fun to do. What do you think about this season of Doctor Who? Well, this season’s a little rough. I wanna see how it’s all gonna culminate before I make any final decisions because the first half–ouch. I love the first season with Matt Smith. It was really fun and it had that really nice English English feel about it like with the Pertwee era or the Troughton era. You know, running around in the countryside in the VW bus. I loved that tone and I really liked that they were going for it, and this year, they went really in an interesting direction. The first episode [of the current season] was just, “Wow, there’s a lot getting thrown at you,” but then it went weird. And also, it was kind of predictable. I kind of saw the River Song thing coming even before the first season, but that’s just me bragging. Pia Guerra recently appeared at the Wizard World Chicago Comic Con. To see hundreds of other celebrities, including your favorites artists, jump on board the Wizard World tour: next stop, Mid-Ohio Comic Con, Oct. 22-23, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. — Roger Riddell

ot everyone can make it to the Wizard World Chicago Comic Con—held this past weekend in the Windy City—and even if you were one of the lucky ones to join in on the fun, it’s impossible for you to be in two, or three, or four places at once. Fortunately, we’re in the 21st century and technology like video cameras and the Internet can make wellintentioned voyeurs of us all! For those who couldn’t make it, or just want to relive the moment, here are three of our favorite video recaps from the convention: BRUCE CAMBPELL Best known for his blood-soaked performance as Ash in the “Evil Dead” series or Sam Axe, the ex-spy-turned-beach bum in “Burn Notice,” Bruce Campbell has been a fan favorite for years. We all knew he could deliver a punch line with impeccable timing, or flash a charming smile with his cinematic good looks, but check out what happens when the man in the Tux orchestrates a surprise proposal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3DuNYUvM34

PATRICK STEWART Take your pick: Captain Jean-Luc Picard or Professor Charles Xavier. Both characters are icons in pop culture, and one man has played both those parts to perfection: Patrick Stewart. In a rare appearance, Patrick Stewart with his son Daniel talks about auditioning for Star Trek, how Gene Roddenberry absolutely didn’t want him for the part of Captain Picard, and falling asleep on the set of “Next Generation”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBKYKhZentY

ROCK JOCKS In an exclusive panel, the cast and crew of “Rock Jocks” preview the flick and give you a behind-the-scenes look at the hilarious new film. Felicia Day, Robert Picardo, and Jason Mewes star in this “Clerks in Space” themed comedy that has a little bit of “The Office” and “Men in Black” thrown in for good measure. Check it out—you won’t see this footage anywhere else: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNvZXMkG4hA

Light Shining Out of

Darkness

Last week, we introduced the Dark Ages and went over the many, many reasons why this name fits the time period. However, just like the historical Medieval period, there was the occasional beacon of hope popping up out of the darkness, so this week we’re going to look at a few of them. Much derision occurs when talking about the Clone Saga

that ran through the SpiderMan titles, but, much like today’s “Brand New Day,” the events leading to this were the reason for the scorn, not the actual stories springing out of it. The reality is, sales actually increased, not decreased, during this period for SpiderMan, one of the very few titles to do that, and, more importantly, the changes brought about by the storyline were quite positive.

Market watch Before you flip the page thinking that I must be out of my mind, let’s look at the facts. Unlike “One More Day,” where the marriage to Mary Jane was dissolved through the use of Mephisto, a character that no one can legitimately argue belongs in a Spider-Man story, the writers of the Clone Saga not only found a way to give us a Peter Parker without a marriage to Mary Jane, but also did so within the framework of previous Spider-Man stories. They also gave the marriage a dignified sendoff, allowing Peter and Mary Jane to depart for Portland to make a family while “Peter” stayed in New York to rebuild his life and defend the city as SpiderMan. The stories involving the second Spider-Man felt more like “real” Spider-Man stories than the titles had in ages. As for the creators, there was artwork from John Romita, Jr. on SpiderMan, Mark Bagley from the Amazing Spider-Man, and Dan Jurgens, followed by Mike Wieringo, on Sensational Spider-Man. This was also the time that arguably the best SpiderMan title of the last 30 years, Untold Tales of Spider-Man, came out. Rather than being tied in to current continuity, though, this series was tied into the continuity of the earliest issues of the Amazing Spider-Man, with issues

taking place in-between issues of the classic Stan Lee-Steve Ditko run. This is some of writer Kurt Busiek’s best work, which is saying something, and his stories were complimented perfectly by the artwork of Pat Olliffe. These all-ages gems just also happened to be only $0.99 in an era when the Marvel line was twice that. As much as we mocked Image in last week’s installment, during this period they did begin to grow up, albeit very slowly, and some truly great projects came out near the end of this era. In 1998, Wildstorm introduced their Cliffhanger imprint, building around J. Scott Campbell, Joe Madureira, and Humberto Ramos, who launched Danger Girl, Battle Chasers, and Crimson, respectively. The first, Danger Girl, is at best tripe, and the same would be true for Battle Chasers if it ever actually came out. Crimson, however, was a breath of fresh air, with an outstanding story, aided by co-writer Brian Augustyn, that was different than anything on the stands, and that is always the case with Ramos’ artwork. The concepts behind Zero Hour were sound, and had DC handled things properly afterwards, it would have been a great reset button for the DCU. Instead, the majority of the reboots were

Market watch early, as the decompressed style was done here well before Brian Michael Bendis made it all the rage with Ultimate Spider-Man. With an incredibly dark and bleak future – the Earth does blow up, after all – and a continuity that one needed to be well versed in to jump into, DC needed a Legion series with the fun of the original with a slightly modern twist. Can anyone say clones? Enter the Legionnaires. Anyway, you see the reason for the reboot.

a mess and the opportunities presented by Zero Hour either lost or wasted. Except in one key area, that is. While far too many titles are rebooted simply for the sake of rebooting, the Legion

of Super-Heroes needed a reboot. In trying to solve the remaining continuity issues left over from Crisis, Keith Giffen’s “Five Years Later” run on Legion of SuperHeroes instead only further complicated matters in many cases. In fairness, though, the series came 10 years

With Mark Waid, whose reverence for the Legion is well known, and Tom McCraw at the helm, a whole new team unfolded, with many homages and parallels to the original while still standing on its own strongly, with new heroes, new plotlines, and a sense of wonder that had long been lacking. Legion of Super-Heroes and Legionnaires were truly the breakout stars of Zero Hour.

Finally, while it is easy to point to the overabundance of creator-owned mainstream properties by artists looking to do their own thing as one of the biggest problems with the ’90s, there was one group of writer-artists that had none of the problems of Image, Axis, Maximum Press, and numerous others, and that was the creators under Dark Horse’s Legend imprint. This line would produce John Byrne’s Next Men, Sin City, Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, Monkeyman and O’Brien, Danger Unlimited, Concrete, Hellboy, Madman, Martha Washington Goes to War, and Martha Washington: Stranded in Space. That’s a significant chunk of the quality to be found by writer-artists during this era, and you could find them all in one place. Top 4 Intercompany Crossovers of

the Dark Ages

Market watch

W

ith the industry collapsing around them, publishers flailed around looking for anything that might create some buzz, and a great way to do this during this time was the inter-company crossover, and superhero universes became “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” real quickly.

While the majority were very weak, there are a few that stood out as being excellent models of storytelling. These are the top four.

4

3

WildC.A.T.s/ X-Men Just a look at the credits for this series will tell you why it was so awesome: Travis Charest artwork in #1, Jim Lee artwork in #2, Adam Hughes artwork over a James Robinson story in #3, and Warren Ellis goes all dystopian in his tale of doom and gloom in #4. If those names alone won’t get your attention, absolutely nothing will. Each issue, by the way, nicely stands on its own as well, so if you are only a Charest fan, you can enjoy his one issue, have a complete story there, and skip the rest. The other nice fact of this series is that absolutely none of these tales violates the continuity of either title, allowing the reader to decide for themselves whether these stories actually “happened” or not.

atman/Grendel and B Batman/Grendel II While the majority of the stories told of Grendel were ones based in the future, it would be the original, Hunter Rose, who would meet up with the Dark Knight in the first two-part crossover written and drawn by Grendel creator, and frequent Bat-contributor, Matt Wagner. The second, though, would tie into the futuristic tales that came after the death of Hunter Rose, using time travel to bring Grendel-Prime to the time of Batman and the recently deceased Hunter Rose. Not only does Wagner do another excellent job of writing and art, but he also plants it firmly in Grendel continuity, something rarely done with intercompany crossovers.

WildC.A.T.s/ Aliens While I touted the fact that WildC.A.T.s/X-Men could fit comfortably into the continuity of either title, this one-shot is absolutely critical to the continuity of the Wildstorm Universe. How so? In issue #10 of Stormwatch, Vol. II, everything is going fine for Stormwatch. In issue #11, a good chunk of the team is dead. How did they die? A xenomorph invasion of SkyWatch, which occurs in this oneshot, leading to the end of Stormwatch and the beginning of the Authority.

Spawn #10 When Todd McFarlane brought in top-tier talent to guest write his series, fans rejoiced. Alan Moore wrote the eighth issue, Neil Gaiman the ninth, and the last guest writer, Frank Miller, did the eleventh issue. Gaiman did introduce a new character to the Spawn mythos, Angela, but he largely played the story safe within the boundaries of typical Spawn stories. Moore added nothing new to the story, telling what was a fairly lackluster story about a sociopath that Spawn had killed in a previous issue. Miller’s issue was quite pathetic, and made me long for McFarlane’s writing of the character.

2

Beyond the long-term effects of this one-shot, the story itself here is brilliantly told by the writer of Stormwatch and the Authority, Warren Ellis. The art, meanwhile, was an interesting combination of the unique penciling style of Chris Sprouse with the strong, distinctive inking style of Kevin Nowlan.

1

Of course, I skipped #10 in there, and that’s because it was completely different than the rest. How different? Dave Sim weaves a brilliant illustration of creator ownership through Todd McFarlane, as Spawn, traveling down to Hell, where he finds scores of classic characters, such as Superman, imprisoned, and their creators ready to be executed. The story dramatically illustrated what Image was supposed to be about (and radically changed soon after this) while introducing tens of thousands of readers to Cerebus. This is easily the best Spawn story ever, but it can also be seen as one of Cerebus’ best as well. — Mark Allen Haverty
