RULES OF GOLF RULE 27-2 PLAYING A PROVISIONAL BALL

M EL B LASI , D IRECTOR OF G OLF The “provisional” ball rule is one that is often misunderstood or is a rule that is played with incorrect procedure. The provisional ball procedure is an extension of Rule 27 which is the rule for a ball that is lost or hit out of bounds. The procedure states “If a ball may be lost outside a water hazard or may be out of bounds, to save time the player may play another ball provisionally in accordance with Rule 27-1. The player must inform his opponent or a fellow competitor that he intends to play a provisional ball and he must play it before he or his partner goes forward to search for the original ball.” The Harry Mussatto Golf Course poses many challenges, not the least of which is a ball that may be out of bounds or lost. We also have numerous lateral water hazard areas that a ball may be lost in. There is a distinct difference in procedure for a ball hit into a water hazard as opposed to one lost or out of bounds. For example, on Hole #2 a player may hit a ball in the pond to the right off the tee, take a penalty shot and play his 3rd shot from next to the pond. In contrast, for a ball hit out of bounds to the left on Hole #2, the player must play his 3rd shot (Continued) H ARRY M USSATTO G OLF C OURSE W ESTERN I LLINOIS U NIVERSITY
