RENO

By Michael W. Sasser

f a geographically challenged Easterner is asked to name the capital city of Nevada, the obvious instinct might be to guess Las Vegas. While Carson City is the capital – and correct answer – Reno might be many people's second guess. After all, Carson City doesn't have a historical satire named after it, unlike Reno and the eponymous Reno 911. Reno, the "Biggest Little City in the World," is located in the beautiful northwest region of the State of Nevada, right at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and about an hour from Lake Tahoe, a destination with something to offer for everyone. Whether gaming or culture, history or entertainment or the region's world-class outside sporting opportunities, there is enough to keep visitors busy day and night. Many attractions are located just outside the city itself, so renting a car is a good idea. Familiarize yourself with a map. On weekends, visitors from California take to the streets and it can be a challenge to navigate the roads around the periphery. 8 WIREMAG.COM #43 2018

First though, in town, you'll want to survey the casinos that were the early attraction of Reno. Decades ago, the competition was tough on the local casino scene downtown and it began to deteriorate. Downtown has made a comeback and today's casinos feature entertainment and dining not to be missed. Silver Legacy is a newer casino and is physically connected to other establishments, making for a one-stop entertainment complex. Across a skywalk is the pin neon masterpiece Eldorado with a fine European themed restaurant. Circus Circus is also part of the complex, and with its circus acts and midway attractions it is appealing to families. Harrah's Reno, Atlantis, and Peppermill are also worth a visit. The luxury condos at Grand Sierra Resort can be separately rented and offer the ultimate comfort in the heart of the action. The casinos do tend to dominate the more upscale accommodations component of town with less costly and more casual hotels dotting the city and outskirts. Dining leans to the more casual with plenty of exceptions, particularly at the finer casinos and ethnic pockets in the city.

Nightlife in Reno is about what you'd expect for a city that grew up around gaming. Besides arts and culture programs, much of the nightlife still revolves around the casinos. There are plenty of bars and even a couple of higher-energy club-like settings and most are integrated fairly well. Reno is about enjoying oneself in a friendly environment and mostly, that's what you will find day and night. It isn't all gaming in town. You'll want to check out the Nevada Museum of Art, summer performances at Wingfield Park or the downtown center, Victorian Square. Reno offers both a philharmonic orchestra and a ballet theater. The Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts hosts several Broadway productions each season. The visual arts are represented in a number of galleries and the University of Nevada, Reno brings an eclectic mix of performing arts to the city during the school year. While gaming and culture are strong attractions, even the casinos are less historic draws than the environment outside Reno. All less than two hours from town are ski destinations such as Mt.

Rose, Heavenly, and famous Squaw Valley, host of the 1960 Winter Olympics. Also in very close proximity are opportunities for mountain biking, trail road biking, kayaking and hiking, and more – all of which also provide good opportunities for exquisite mountain photography. One of these opportunities will be the Great Reno Balloon Race, the largest free hot-air ballooning event in the world. During three days (September 6-8, 2019), you will look up to the Reno skies and see a rainbow of hot air balloons soaring above you. Of course, Lake Tahoe itself is in easy proximity – but that's a whole other destination with its own, diverse attractions. Michael W. My take… I actually like these films when they're good, they're fun escapist material not to be taken seriously. Unfortunately, most films of this type do nothing but shred the genre. Fortunately, Halloween is a true example of what a good genre film looks like.

TOP TRAX By DJ FR8-O

BRING THE NOYES! atch out pop world! There's a new lolita in town, and her name is Maty Noyes. The 21-year-old Mississippi-turned-LA girl has been seducing the music scene for a few years now, starting with her hit Kygo collaboration "Stay" in 2015. Since then, she's loaned her distinctive purr on many other tracks, like Lemaitre's "Higher" and The Weekend's "Angel," not to mention a few movie soundtracks along the way. Her 2016 debut EP Noyes Complaint proved that she's more than just a pretty voice, garnering praise from fans and top industry critics alike. Her follow-up EP, Love Songs From a Lolita is no different; delivering addictive rhythms with unapologetic messages of not just romantic love, but a love of life, friends and yourself. Currently touring with Noah Cyrus, Maty took a minute to chat with me about her rising fame, her new EP and how she really feels about the LGBTQ community.

"I AM GOING TO KEEP DROPPING SONGS, KEEP CREATING MY OWN ORIGINAL CONTENT, KEEP WRITING AND PLAYING LIVE AND WORKING HARDER THAN EVER TO GIVE GREAT MUSIC OUT TO THE WORLD." - MATY NOYES

20 WIREMAG.COM #43 2018

DJ FR8-O: How are you feeling now that Love Songs From a Lolita is finally out there for the world to enjoy? Maty Noyes: I feel like I can breathe again. It's been such a long time coming, and I just wanna give you guys more and more and more. It's an addicting feeling getting to share your babies with the world.

DF: What was the journey like putting the EP together? MN: The journey was good. I took over a lot creatively, so it's very personal to me. With this EP, I also did all the creative and styling for the covers along with my dear friend and photographer, Delaney Royer.

that day. It felt like we'd known each other for years. It felt like I was just kicking it with friends more than even shooting a video. They all had such great energy.

DF: Describe the inspiration or story behind each new song. MN: • "Spiraling Down" – Finally trusting my plan despite the unknown and what everyone else is up to. • "Porn Star" – Saying something that hasn't really been said but needs to be. I believe our generation should learn to love the right way. • "Lava Lamps" – Simply a feel-good song with a sick ass beat. • "New Friends" – All true stories I had to get off my chest since I'm not good at confrontation. • "Boys Like You" – It's just a cover [originally by Anna Clendening]. • "Perspective" – When you've really tried to understand someone, but at the end of the day how you feel about it is just how you feel.

DF: Is there anything else you'd like to share with the Wire Magazine readers? MN: Never apologize for who you love! Anyone who judges that has their own demons going on. I do believe the world is changing and it all starts here with us baby. The future is bright! Keep shining like a diamond.

DF: Speaking of fun, you recently turned 21. How did you celebrate your big crossover into "adulthood"? MN: I'm still celebrating! I went home to spend time with my family and I rode on a huge unicorn float that holds like 10 people. Then I went to Joshua Tree to have a spiritual weekend with close friends, but the crossover into adulthood started when I was 14 with a fake DF: What would you say is different about this ID… ha-ha! "I THINK IT'S OKAY TO BE INSPIRED BY OTHERS AS LONG AS YOU PAY THAT CULTURE TRIBUTE AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT." - MATY NOYES

DF: What inspired you to dedicate your "Spiraling Down" video to the LGBTQ community? MN: It would almost be like if someone wrote a song called "Wig" and didn't dedicate it to the LGBTQ community. I think it's okay to be inspired by others as long as you pay that culture tribute and acknowledgment. "Spiraling down" is a term that came up in the community. I know because the co-writer is also a part of the LGBTQ community, so I wanted to pay the tribute forward, but it's also about owning those down times in your life instead of letting them break you. Embracing the mess and learning to love it. DF: It looks like you had a great time shooting the video. Do you have any fun "behind the scenes" stories to share? MN: Honestly, the best part of that video was how many amazing friends I made. We all had a blast together and we just met for the first time

COLETTE

olette," whose real name was Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, is acknowledged to be France's most famous, albeit bawdy, female author. This wonderful film made all the more wonderful by the outstanding performance of Keira Knightley, is an enjoyable romp through the circumstances that led the author to "come out of the closet." It's a story of liberation and empowerment at a time in Paris when challenging gender norms was fraught with imprisonment or worse.
