PUBLISHER'S CORNER WORK HARD AND ENJOY LIFE TO THE FULLEST In this edition of Wire Magazine, we bring you another collaboration with David Vance and some of his stunning male models. For this week's photo essay, David decided to showcase some of his gorgeous men in water, the basic source of life on planet Earth. We hope you enjoy another enticing series of David's beautiful photographs of his muses getting wet in different locations. After a quick three-day trip to Puerto Rico last week to prepare the launch of the operations of Q Link Wireless, I flew back to Miami to attend opening weekend of the MiFo LGBT Film Festival, now renamed the OUTshine Film Festival. I love film, so I returned to catch some of the films before my responsibilities as Chief Operating Officer of Q Link Wireless bring me right back to San Juan for the launch of our new operations in "La Island del Encanto." Unfortunately, I will miss some of the great films being shown at MiFo's Miami edition this year. However, my consolation prize is that, after working on Q Link Wireless' new venture all week, I will be staying at a resort right on the ocean and attending the parties for the Hydro Caribbean Festival in Puerto Rico, proudly sponsored by Wire Magazine once again this year. I work hard, but I do my best to live my life to the fullest and take advantage of many of the opportunities it presents. While photographer David Vance might specialize in bringing out the best in his model subjects, another American thrilled audiences last century with mind-blowing illusions. The magic and mystery of illusionist and escape artist Harry Houdini is being brought to the stage at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, April 26 – May 20, 2017. The Arsht Center is presenting The House Theatre of Chicago's critically-acclaimed production of Death and Harry Houdini, commended by the Chicago Tribune as "Magic of the very highest order!" Written and directed by The House's Artistic Director Nathan Allen, Death and Harry Houdini delivers a roller coaster ride through the life of the great magician, Harry Houdini, and his lifelong battle against death, including Houdini's most renowned and dangerous escape – the dreaded Water Torture Cell. Wire Magazine previews the occasion with an interview of Dennis Watkins, the acclaimed actor/magician starring in this unique show.

ne of the world's most mysterious and famed figures is brought to life in the unique production, Death and Harry Houdini. The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is presenting The House Theatre of Chicago's critically-acclaimed production of Death and Harry Houdini, commended by the Chicago Tribune as "Magic of the very highest order!" This play marks the second House Theatre of Chicago production presented at the Adrienne Arsht Center after last season's The Sparrow. Written and directed by The House's Artistic Director Nathan Allen, Death and Harry Houdini delivers a roller coaster ride through the life of the great magician, Harry Houdini, and his lifelong battle against death. House company member and award-winning magician, Dennis Watkins, has joined the cast and is set to perform Houdini's most renowned and dangerous escape – the dreaded Water Torture Cell – in this dark and tumultuous story guaranteed to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Watkins brings distinct appropriateness to his role. Watkins, a celebrated actor and third-generation, award-winning magician, brings a lifetime of creating magic to the character of Harry Houdini. Watkins has designed a fantastic landscape that highlights many of Houdini's original creations as well as a performance of Houdini's most infamous stage escape, The Water Torture Cell, in which he is locked upside down in a tank of water with only as much time to escape as he has air in his lungs. This ingenious production boasts the first-ever recorded performance of The Water Torture Cell in the round. Death and Harry Houdini plays in the intimate Carnival Studio Theater (Ziff Ballet Opera House) from April 26 – May 20, 2017 as part of the Theater Up Close season. For more information and tickets, visit www.arshtcenter.org. In advance of the exciting opening, Wire Magazine sat down with Dennis Watkins to discuss the magic behind Death and Harry Houdini. Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers about Death and Harry Houdini. Dennis Watkins: My friend Nathan Allen began writing Death and Harry Houdini when we were in college. The play was created to be the first show produced by The House Theatre of Chicago and it opened on Halloween of 2001. It's the story of Harry Houdini and his lifelong battle with death. the story using a lot of original music, dance, puppetry, and of course – magic. It was a huge experiment in storytelling for Nathan and all of the artists who moved to Chicago to build our little company. The show has had several productions over the last 16 years. I like to believe that it has grown and evolved greatly in each and every one of its incarnations. The show features a great deal of magic, from close-up sleight of hand to largescale stage illusions. Of course, we also feature Houdini's Water Torture Cell escape, in which I am locked upside-down in a tank of water. From a theatrical standpoint, one of the most exciting things about the show is that our audience gets to watch this very suspenseful escape, and all of the magic, from just a few feet away. RC: When did you decide to become a magician? DW: I've wanted to be a magician since I was a very young child. RC: How did you learn to do magic? DW: My grandfather was a terrific sleight of hand performer who ran a small, storefront magic shop in Dallas, TX for a long, long time. I started learning magic from him when I was around the age of 7.

Now that we're on our 8th production of the show, most of the preparation feels like it's been behind me for a while. The first time around, I spent months learning to hold my breath for several minutes, how to swallow razor blades and walk on broken glass. But underwater escapes are inherently dangerous, so we do tackle this one like it's the first time every time. We've had several hours of Water Torture Cell rehearsal with the whole team, making sure that everyone can do exactly what is needed and that everyone is 100% prepared for the moment that something goes wrong. RC: What is the most rewarding part of being a magician and why? DW: There are so many things that are rewarding about my job. I feel like I'm enormously lucky

when it comes to my work life. I get to travel the country doing exactly what I dreamed of doing when I was a kid. I hope that folks come to our shows and give in to their imaginations. We don't do that an awful lot of the time. As grown-ups, we carry a lot of responsibilities. We are completely wrapped up in our lives and we don't spend a lot of time thinking about the impossible. We don't look for the magical or the mysterious in our everyday lives. I think the most rewarding part of being a magician is helping people reacquaint themselves with a sense of childlike wonder, if only for a few brief moments. RC: What is your most difficult magic trick/illusion in the show and why? DW: I believe the most difficult piece of magic in the show is the Water Torture Cell. I've performed it hundreds of times, but it remains extremely stressful to perform. Though I am confident with my ability to execute the escape, it is the psychological effect of being locked upside down in a tank of water that makes it difficult every time. RC: What advice do you have for aspiring magicians? DW: To practice and study magic like it is a craft, then to surround themselves with different kinds of artists. Make sure they're smarter than you and more disciplined than you. Learn about how they practice their craft. While most magicians think of their art as a solo journey, you will benefit most from collaborations. RC: What is the most difficult part of being a magician? DW: The hustle. As a magician, you are a performing artist. That means you're always looking for opportunities to share your work. You're a gigging professional, and all gigs come to an end. So, working for more work, building an audience, and keeping the calendar full… these are the most difficult parts of my job. The magic… that's the fun part.

RC: How do you prepare for a role as demanding as Harry Houdini? DW: Well, the role definitely requires some very specific preparation. There is a good amount of difficult sleight of hand, I walk across a bed of broken glass. And, naturally, performing the Water Torture Cell is no small undertaking. So, I worked pretty closely with Nathan (the writer and director of this piece) to create magic that suited the story, and then I spent time on my own engineering those specific pieces, rehearsing them, and getting them ready to implement into the story.

DELOS ISLAND OF THE GODS Not only did it become a fixed island, but Delos became so sacred that – get this – no one could be born there (Artemis and Apollo were hard acts to follow) or, because of the island's association with birth, die there. Even as Delos became the place for Sun and Moon worship, and an economic powerhouse for the region, Delian women about to give birth and people at death's door were shipped off to the nearby islet of Rineia to let nature take its course. This went on for generations. Things have relaxed a little bit in modern times – you can be born and die there now – but what remains the same is that this island is largely into gods. A stone's throw away from the gay paradise of Mykonos, Delos is end to end a UNESCO World Heritage site because of all the temples. Whatever the myths may say, it is clear the island was from the start a sacred site. In fact, such was the gravitas of the island that it became sacred

to gods not just from Greece; Phoenicians raised sanctuaries to Baal, Astarte, and Eshmun, Egyptians brought in Isis, Jews built a synagogue, and the Romans added a shrine to Rome, the holy personification of the empire. Most striking, perhaps, is the gigantic phallus in the complex of Dionysus, God of wine and frenzy. If you wanted to commune with the divine, you pretty much had your pick on Delos. Regular ferry service from the islands of Mykonos, Tinos, and Naxos make a Delian day-trip easy. However, a day-trip is all it's going to be: There is no place to stay on the island; Delos is, ironically, one of the most inhospitable places in the Aegean. It's practically a desert. Even in its day, the inhabitants were more like a "professional populace" for the various temples and had to import just about everything, including their own ranks. Delos existed purely as a religious site, never a civilian one, which makes it all the more a standout among Greece's islands. Not exactly expansive, get to Delos early and you can see just about everything during daylight hours, including the museum that houses some of the best treasures Delos has to offer. o here is the myth: the island of Delos was never rooted to the seafloor. Rather, it floated. This transient existence lasted right up until the very heavily pregnant Titan Leto showed up and gave birth to Artemis, Goddess of the Moon and the hunt, and Apollo, God of the Sun and music. Then all sorts of stuff happened.

T H E C H A I N S M O K E R S,

FAR FROM ADDICTIVE

Although their signature format has (thankfully) evolved from EDM fist-pumpers like "#Selfie" to slightly more palatable mid-tempo ballads, Taggart and Pall aren't quite ready to surrender their synths anytime soon. Their 2015 smash "Roses" gave the mainstream audience its first taste of "future bass" – a style Taggert describes as "blurring the lines between indie, pop music, dance music, and hip-hop." They galvanized their ownership over the aural hybrid even more when their single "Closer" featuring Halsey took the No. 1 spot and their Daya collaboration "Don't Let Me Down" snatched a Grammy for Best Dance Recording. With so many accolades being thrown at them for this "new" sound, it shouldn't be of any surprise to hear it dominate most Memories... While they showed enough restraint to leave the previously mentioned tracks off the collection's setlist, the same can't be said for their current chart-hoggers "Paris" and "Something Like This" (featuring Coldplay). Not that it would have made any difference, since the rest of the tracks are so similar they practically blend into

each other. As for the vocalist of the group, Taggart, the best decision he could have made was to let someone else do the singing for a change. Coldplay's Chris Martin, newcomers Emily Warren, Louane and Jhené Aiko, and even country duo Florida Georgia Line take their turns at the mic, giving our ears a welcome break, at least for half of the set. There's no denying how much The Chainsmokers' productions have matured since their earlier work, and being the first artists to usher a new sub-genre into the mainstream with enough force to influence the entire pop landscape is no small feat either. However, they still have a long way to go before they can be considered anything more than a trendy novelty act. Like every music fad before them – including EDM – it's only a matter of time before "future bass" reaches the end of its shelf-life and is tossed out for the next genre du jour. When that happens, The Chainsmokers will have to keep evolving if they plan on continuing to feed our insatiable addictions to the next big thing.

t wasn't too long ago that we were all bathing in an endless sea of EDM DJs that once flooded the planet's airwaves, earbuds and dance floors. One of those acts was a duo from New York made up of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall aka The Chainsmokers. Like some of their peers – Swedish House Mafia, Calvin Harris and David Guetta – it only took one hit to put them on the mainstream's radar. For The Chainsmokers, it was a campy club-banger called "#Selfie." Riding the wave of the global monster we call pop culture, the pair eventually caught the attention of Sony Music execs who eventually scooped them up via a joint label, Disruptor Records. Since then, the guys have been churning out club singles and EPs galore, all leading up to their latest project, their debut full-length album Memories... Do Not Open.

NUTRITION By Anthony Reyes

I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM!

Ice cream is awesome, but it is chock-full of more than just sweet, creamy goodness. Like everything decadent in life (sweets, alcohol, sex…), we should consume it in moderation. Portion size is a very important aspect to think about – and no, we are not talking penis size! One serving of ice cream is half a cup – yes, you heard right. One half. I know a lot of your little ice cream filled hearts are breaking, but it is important to know the portion size of what you're putting in your mouth (insert penis joke here).

s there anything hotter than South Florida in the summer? Sure – the center of the Earth if you want to get technical, but South Florida feels like a pretty close second if you ask me. We all look for something to cool us down whether that be a cold glass of water, a frozen margarita, a stop at Fat Tuesday's, or maybe you crave a nice scoop of deliciously refreshing ice cream. I don't care how old you are, no one can deny the childhood nostalgia that overtakes us when we hear that ice cream truck song echoing in the distance. You know your mouth salivates just a little, and if there were no one watching you'd be the first one in line.

Another thought to keep in perspective – adding 500 calories extra a day leads to an extra one pound a week. Eating that pint of ice cream hardly seems worth it now, does it?

Fear not! There are some fantastic brands of ice cream alternatives to help you have your cool, creamy dessert and not feel it in your daily caloric wallet.
