PUBLISHER'S CORNER ENJOY PRIDE AROUND THE WORLD WITH THE SPIRIT OF STONEWALL As millions of us celebrate Pride around the world in such beautiful cities as Berlin, London, Montreal, New York, Paris, Rome, Washington D.C., and many other great destinations, let’s pause to thank our LGBTQ brothers and sisters who had the courage to stand up for their rights – and our rights – during the Stonewall Riots almost 50 years ago in New York City. The world we live in is drastically better for LGBTQ people in many parts of the globe because five decades ago members of our community got fed up with discrimination and abuse, protested loudly and fought back, giving birth to the modern gay liberation movement. Many of their dreams have become a reality today, but much remains to be fought for in the pursuit of full LGBTQ equality around the world. "Despite significant progress toward greater equality for LGBTQ Americans, too many members of the LGBTQ community still face discrimination at home, at work, at school, and in public places,” said David Stacy, Human Rights Campaign Government Affairs Director. “Until every LGBTQ American has equal opportunity to pursue the American Dream, we must continue to promote social, legal and institutional change.” Furthermore, in several countries around the world gay people literally face the risk of death for coming out or living their lives in the open. Just last month, Brunei announced that it would impose death by stoning for people convicted of gay sex. It’s billionaire Sultan literally thought that such a brutal punishment would be justified. After global condemnation and backlash, this past Sunday, Brunei’s ruler was forced to give a nationally televised speech stating that his country will not impose the death penalty on people convicted of having gay sex, will extend a moratorium on capital punishment and ratify the United Nations Convention Against Torture.

UPCOMING

SPECIAL ISSUES Real Estate Gay Weddings Travel

My friends, the galant fight started during the Stonewall Riots is far from over. We and our friends and allies must remain determined, vigilant and vocal in the pursuit of full equality. All threats against LGBTQ rights, whether in the United States or around the world, must be faced head on with the same determination and courage as that of our Stonewall brothers and sisters who paved the way for us to come together for so many Pride festivities. Yes, let’s rejoice and celebrate Pride around the world, but let’s also remain resolute in standing up to discrimination, hate and violence against gay people. Check out this week’s issue of Wire Magazine to learn about 18 of the many Pride celebrations taking place around the world, including WorldPride NYC 2019 and Stonewall 50, which will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising. Happy Pride! Cheers,

THE PLATINUM GALA

MIAMI-DADE GAY & LESBIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 20TH ANNIVERSARY ANNUAL AWARDS CELEBRATION he Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC) invites everyone to the 20th Anniversary Annual Awards Celebration, The Platinum Gala at the Hilton Miami Downtown on Saturday, May 18, 6-11 p.m. The Gala, once again sponsored by Wells Fargo, is a celebration that honors community leaders for their longterm commitment to the LGBTQ community in South Florida. This anticipated event is a great opportunity for attendees to network with members of our community every year. Tickets are $220 per person, and tables of 10 are $2,200. Visit gaybizmiami.com to purchase tickets and see the full list of 2019 honorees.

Michael Bustamante: Tell our readers about this year's Gala and why it is going to be a night to remember. Jorge Richa: This annual Gala is one of the most-anticipated events of the year for the LGBTQ and allied communities. While at its core this Gala is all about networking, the social and camaraderie aspects of the event are undeniable. The evening will have many surprises to make it a fun and a memorable night. As the voice of the LGBTQ business community in Miami-Dade, the MDGLCC is especially proud to have such an accomplished and extraordinary group to recognize this year, such as the AT&T Business of the Year Award going to NBC 6 South Florida; the Regions Business Persons of the Year Award going to Bertha Galindo-Crucet and Kevin Walsh; and the Morgan Stanley Bob Balsam Civic Achievement Award going to Michael Bath. We are also proud of the continuous support of Wells Fargo that once again serves as our main event sponsor. 8 WIREMAG.COM #10 2019

Wire Magazine sat down with MDGLCC's Director of Marketing and Programming Jorge Richa to find out more about this year's The Platinum Gala.

MB: What is the symbolism of the "platinum" in Platinum Gala? JR: This year, the MDGLCC is celebrating its 20th anniversary of business excellence in our community. Platinum is the color associated with the milestone. In addition to that, the National LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) is proud to recognize the MDGLCC as the 2019 NGLCC Chamber of the Year. The Chamber of the Year is seen as a role model for other chambers and raises the bar for impacting the LGBTQ business community where they live and work. We are beyond excited to be recognized for our work and accomplishments as we pride ourselves for being the voice of the LGBTQ and allied businesses in the Miami-Dade market. This validates our eorts and our constant drive to work for the betterment of our members and their businesses. From our educational programming making business tools available for our members to thrive, to networking opportunities providing exposure, connectivity, awareness, visibility, and referrals to both sponsors and attendees. All of these translating into business growth for our members.

MB: How many people are you anticipating to attend the Gala and how have attendance numbers trended in recent years? JR: Over 500 guests are expected to be in attendance to pay tribute to the honorees selected for their long-term commitment to fostering diversity, as well as for their eorts in contributing to the overall well-being and quality of life in South Florida. We have seen steady growth across the years in particular with more corporate representation and participation both LGBTQ and allied. MB: Why is the Gala important to our community? JR: This Gala is the MDGLCC's principal fundraiser of the year, which helps sustain operations and expand the ever-increasing demand for member programming. As the largest not-for-profit corporation in the county for LGBTQ businesses, we continue to promote networking within the existing gay and gay-friendly business and professional community, to promote business opportunities for Chamber members, to promote Miami as a year-round, gay and gay-friendly tourist destination, to provide resources for its members, and to provide outreach from the LGBTQ community to other organizations. MB: What part of the evening are you most looking forward to? JR: The event is architectured in a way that encourages people to network and meet each other. From the cocktail reception, (bars courtesy of Bacardi), the interactive pop-ups, silent auction, buet dinner, awards ceremony, moonlight networking, and even the kids play zone (sponsored by Jackson Health System), there is ample opportunity to socialize and mingle.

MB: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? JR: First and foremost, we want to thank Wire Magazine for being an oďŹƒcial media partner of the event. We welcome your readers to join the celebration on May 18 at The Platinum Gala by having some fun, engaging with new people, and hopefully doing some business in between.

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARINA

The former "Primadonna" girl signaled her evolution last year when she tweeted, "It took me well over a year to figure out that a lot of my identity was tied up in who I was as an artist... and there wasn't much left of who I was." It wasn't long after that the new Marina began to emerge from her cocoon, starting with an epic collaboration with the music collective Clean Bandit on their soaring dance single "Disconnect." Now that she's gotten our attention, what's her next move? Well, a new album of course! However, Marina isn't about to give it all away so quickly. She's divided here latest project into two parts: Love and Fear. The first part of Marina's new journey features eight tracks about the most addictive, mysterious, and complicated human emotion, Love. Through these stories, Marina explores self-love,

romantic love and loving the moment. Right from the haunting opener, "Handmade Heaven," it's immediately clear that this is not the same Marina who once taught us "How to be a Heartbreaker." Instead, she has surrendered to her emotions and revels in its bliss. She continues her lover's praises on "Superstar," only this time her vocal acrobatics are backed up by a thumping backbeat worthy of some serious dance floor grinding. "Orange Trees" and "Enjoy Your Life" are the wake-up calls to take a minute to appreciate your surroundings and love where you are. Wedged in between those tracks is another Clean Bandit collaboration, "Baby," featuring the delicious Luis Fonsi. With its Spanish guitar, addictive hook and of course Fonsi's cameo, this is by far my favorite stop on this ride. "True" is Marina's selflove battle cry set to a thumping dance beat that's just begging for a remix to elevate it to Pride anthem status. Sadly, the final numbers, "To Be Human" and "End of the Earth," take a somber turn, bringing down the mood when it should leave you thirsty for more. Somber ending aside, Love proves that Marina still has more to teach us besides how to break hearts. Fortunately, we didn't have to wait too long for our next lesson, Fear, which dropped on April 26.

hey say diamonds are a girl's best friend, but Marina Diamandis might beg to dier. Formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds, the singer/songwriter/producer has dropped the bejeweled half of her alias, going simply by Marina now. Like her old namesake, gone away is the bubblegum princess of the early 2000s. In her place is a bold new diva who is finally about to take her place among pop's precious gems.

SIZZLE MIAMI 2019 ON SOUTH BEACH

Wire Magazine sat down with Dwight Powell, Sizzle's creator and founder, to preview what's in store for Sizzle Miami 2019. Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers about Sizzle Miami 2019. Dwight Powell: Since our start in 2002, Sizzle Miami has always been about offering the best, dopest experience possible for our attendees. It's about having fun – lots and lots of it. This Memorial Day Weekend, our attendees can expect nothing short of the same. 24 WIREMAG.COM #10 2019

izzle, deemed as America's most celebrated and anticipated urban gay event, will be held in Miami Beach during the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend, May 23-27, 2019. For the first time since its inception back in 2002, Sizzle Miami is moving its entire roster of events from Downtown Miami to the National Hotel on South Beach – the event's official host hotel. The entire hotel has been bought out for the weekend just for Sizzle Miami 2019, and it is set to be bigger and better than ever before. Sizzle welcomes everyone to party with all the sexy attendees and outstanding talent at one of the most scenic resorts in South Beach. To view all the events and purchase tickets, visit sizzlemiami.com. RC: What is new for this year's Sizzle festival? DP: This year's Sizzle will be drastically different from all our amazing events over the years. Although we've had an amazing run, we felt that a major change was needed. So, we've shaken things up quite a bit, and the feedback has been huge. For starters, we decided to move the entire event from Downtown Miami to the National Hotel on South Beach. What's particularly great about this move is that we've got a total buyout of the entire resort just for our Sizzle guests. The National is a beachfront resort just steps from the beach, which is something our attendees have been wanting for years. Everyone already knows that South Beach is high energy and filled with tons of fun and excitement. Now imagine adding Sizzle Miami to the mix. Yup, our thoughts exactly. This event is going to be epic!

RC: How has Sizzle Miami evolved over the years? DP: As with most events like ours, having the ability to evolve with the times, norms and social changes is crucial. People are always looking for something new, different and exciting. Over the years, we've learned that in order to remain relevant and top of mind, change is essential. That's why the move to South Beach, as well as adding new events and venues, were important enhancements for the Sizzle brand this year. RC: Why did you decide to create Sizzle Miami? DP: Sizzle initially grew out of a need for more upscale events targeting the urban gay market. Back then, while there were a few other urban events, they were all centered around gay Pride and HIV awareness. While those were and still are important, I wanted to create something different. An event or party where we could showcase our community in a much more positive way beyond the stigma of HIV/AIDS and traditional Pride celebrations. RC: What events do you think attendees are looking forward to the most this year, and why? DP: Hands down, without a doubt, it's the Soak Him Pool Party. The pool at the National Hotel was the deciding factor for the selection of this property as our host hotel. It's a fact that the properties in Miami Beach are known for their pools and grounds, but few can rival the pool and grounds at the National Hotel – it's huge. The atmosphere is breathtaking, and I can't wait to show it off at this year's event. So, I hope all South Florida, residents and tourists alike come out. It's going to be that special. RC: Who are the headlining DJs and performers? DP: When it comes to showcasing the sexiest, most amazing talent, no one does it better than our team here at Sizzle Miami. A major treat and highlight of the event each year has consistently been our stunning, friendly models and go-go dancers. Along with our national circuit and pride events DJs and emcees, they all keep the party electrifying with high pitched energy and excitement. As for our headlining performers, we've decided to make that a secret until the event. Luckily for us, with all we have going on, it's refreshing to know that performer announcements aren't needed to get people to come through our doors.

RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? DP: We want to stress to all of your readers that Sizzle isn't just for out of towners. Also, it's not just for urban men of color. Sizzle is for everyone; local residents of all races and demographics. We want everyone to experience Sizzle as a giant melting pot of our fantastic, loving LGBTQ community.
