OUTSHINE FILM FESTIVAL:

FRED ROSSER TO RECEIVE

THE VANGUARD AWARD red Rosser, also known as WWE professional wrestler Darren Young, will receive the Vanguard Award at the OUTshine Film Festival Closing Awards Ceremony on Sunday, April 28 at 8 p.m. Every year, a celebrity that has "demonstrated outstanding leadership and support of community equality, representation, and education" is chosen as the recipient of the honorary award. Fred came out in 2013, making him the first openly gay active WWE professional wrestler in history. He then founded the #BlocktheHate movement. According to Fred, "Being the first openly gay wrestler (in WWE), I've been able to encourage and inspire wrestling fans all over the world to chase their dreams. I've been able to show other LGBTQ athletes that they have a duty to instill confidence in the youth and lead by example." Wire Magazine sat down with Fred Rosser to find out more about his career, and the mission of the #BlocktheHate movement. Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers about your career as a WWE professional wrestler. Fred Rosser: I started training to become a professional wrestler right out of high school and college in the fall of 2002. I researched a number of wrestling schools before deciding on Camp IWF in West Paterson, New Jersey. I used $2,000 of my own personal scholarship money to enroll in the wrestling school and didn't I tell my parents until about a year into my training. They had no idea. I was always the first one

at wrestling school, and the last one to leave training four days a week. I caught on very quickly to the whole wrestling game. By the end of 2002, I made my professional debut and spent several years on the independent circuit grinding it out from 2003-2009 by traveling and making a name for myself in the Northeast area. I sometimes worked in front of 25 people just to get the experience. I did a plethora of tryouts for WWE during that time, having the door shut in my face so many times until my last tryout in Tampa, Florida. There, I paid to try out and out of 75 guys and girls from all over the world on May 4, 2009, I beat them all and earned my contract with WWE. RC: What motivated you to come out as the first openly gay active WWE professional wrestler? FR: There's a number of reasons why I made the decision to come out publicly to the world. One being love, but also that I simply wanted to bring my boyfriend at the time to red carpet events. I wanted to bring him to WWE functions and be proud to bring him and show him off to the world. I wanted him to be able to experience what it's like traveling and being on the road five days a week, 300 days a year. Living together, I was tired of being affectionate behind closed doors, and then in public, all of that affection is suppressed and hidden like it never even existed.

PHOTOS PROVIDED BY FRED ROSSER III

RC: How did your personal and professional life change after you came out publicly? FR: Before I came out to the world, I had already come out to my mom and my best friend Nicholas (who I call Trouble) two years prior to my announcement. They were important to me. They were my support system and soundboard. One moment, in particular, stands out to me when I came out professionally in WWE, which was when CM Punk came up to me in front of everyone, while iced up from head to toe, and told me to stand up, gave me a hug and said, "I heard your story and I'm very proud of you for being so courageous to make that move to come out. If anyone has a problem with it in the locker room, you let me know, and I'll take care of it." The same thing with Randy Orton, who gave me a big hug and much love, still to this day. I became even closer to the giants of our business like Big Show and Mark Henry. Just the #08 2019 WIREMAG.COM 13

"DON'T DIE WITH A STORY IN YOU. TELL IT." - FRED ROSSER

RC: What would you say to a young gay athlete interested in pursuing a career as a WWE professional wrestler? FR: This isn't easy! The one thing I will caution young hopefuls about is that if you really want to become a WWE superstar, you better love this. Breaking into the wrestling business is the toughest part. Watching it live is fun, but to actually get in the ring and train is a different animal. You have to invest a serious chunk of time into this industry. Actually, you have to invest every spare second that you have into this industry if you want to be the best. The time that it takes to get trained will eat up most of your free time. Then, once you're trained, you have to figure out a way to get better and how to get repetitions in front of a crowd. Since coming out to the world, I think I've made it easier for people who identify as LGBTQ to step up to the plate and get into the wrestling business. I sacrificed my WWE career and living my childhood dream to inspire others to chase their dreams of becoming a mega WWE star even if they're LGBTQ. RC: Why did you decide to found the #BlocktheHate movement? FR: There is so much power in storytelling. I always say in my speaking engagements, "Don't die with a story in you. Tell it." That is why the #BlocktheHate movement I started is so important to me. We need more LGBTQ representation in the media. We need more out athletes. By that, I mean lots of different kinds of LGBTQ people living all different kinds of lives in front of and behind the camera.

14 WIREMAG.COM #08 2019

RC: What is the mission of the #BlocktheHate movement and what are you looking to accomplish with it? FR: The #BlocktheHate movement started with me, first openly gay WWE superstar active on the roster. My goal has been to inspire others to be comfortable in their own skin. The point of this movement is to show that we all aren't as different from each other as we think. We all get bullied for one reason or another, but in order to be strong and successful, you must block the hate. At the end of the day, I want the #BlocktheHate posse, which represents equality for all, to be the next "middle finger" in a positive way. RC: How do you feel about receiving the OUTshine Vanguard Award? FR: I'm thrilled to receive the OUTshine Vanguard Award for my relentless advocacy work and support of the LGBTQ community. I truly believe that my fight is much bigger than in the ring. My fight is outside of the ring continuing to fight bigotry, hatred, and be the voice of the voiceless members our LGBTQ community, or anyone that might get bullied for various reasons. RC: Why do you think fighting for LGBTQ equality is so important? FR: Equality is very important to me because I feel that I have a responsibility of protecting and promoting all human rights for all human beings. Every day, I fight towards a vision of justice and equity for all LGBTQ. I would honestly be failing if I didn't take on this fight. The road to full equality and acceptance is a long one, but I will continue paving the way for equal rights and visibility until I'm six feet under. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? FR: Word on the street is that Marvel is ready and looking for its first openly gay superhero. I'm not hard to find, but with the help of you, the viewers reading this, spreading the word definitely wouldn't hurt. Lastly, my social media is my open diary to the world, so anything I ever post always comes from the heart. I post to elevate, not to hate, so follow me on Instagram and Twitter @ realfredrosser, and my Instagram weekly podcast @proandbrowrestling. Be part of my family on social media. #BlocktheHate #spreadtheword #strengthinnumbers #closedfistopenheart #poweredbypride Visit wiremag.com to read the extended version of this interview.

love from those guys made it much easier to walk in a locker room without the fear and knowing that those particular guys have my back meant the world to me. I'll never forget how much love those guys showed me. Drew McIntyre, who wrestled Roman Reigns in this year's Wrestlemania 35, said this when I came out publicly: "History in our business will remember Darren Young (Fred Rosser) as a pioneer with the courage to say proudly, 'this is who I am,' and he's one hell of a talent and a man."

SPOTLIGHT FILMS:

20 OF THE BEST 2019 OUTSHINE FILM FESTIVAL MIAMI EDITION FILMS Photos provided by OUTshine Film Festival

AN ALMOST ORDINARY SUMMER

(Italy, 2019) Director: Simone Godano In Italian, with English subtitles OUTshine Synopsys: Two very different families spend their holidays in the same seaside house: the aristocratic Castelvecchio's – open-minded, eccentric, but quite selfish – and the working-class Petagna's – very tight-knit and united around solid conservative values. What brought such distant worlds together? Only Tony and Carlo, the two middle-aged heads of the families, know! The unexpected announcement of their engagement will disrupt an apparently ordinary summer and turn the lives of everyone around them upside down. With the wedding already set for three weeks, even more chaos will ensue. 16 WIREMAG.COM #08 2019

CANARY

(South Africa, 2018) Director: Christiaan Olwagen In English and Afrikaans, with English subtitles OUTshine Synopsys: Set in 1985 South Africa against a backdrop of apartheid, religion, and war, Canary is a charming musical drama chronicling one teen's struggle to find his voice. After being drafted, Johan joins the Canaries (the South African Defense Force Church Choir). He believes it will keep him out of fighting a war he is against, but he soon begins to see the role he plays in the oppression and injustice around him. The Canaries teach him that through hardship, camaraderie, first love, and the liberating freedom of music, his true self can be discovered.

CONSEQUENCES

(Slovenia, Austria, 2018) Director: Darko Stante In Slovenian, with English subtitles OUTshine Synopsys: Seventeen-year-old, hunky Andrej is admitted to a youth correctional facility where he meets Željko, another delinquent and the self-appointed leader of the other detainees. Soon Željko starts exploiting Andrej in return for keeping his homosexuality a secret thus causing Andrej's sense of responsibility and moral integrity to be put to the test. Andrej must ultimately choose between joining Željko and his reckless lifestyle or staying true to himself.

EVERYBODY'S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE (UK, 2018) Director: Jonathan Butterell In English

OUTshine Synopsys: Sixteen-year-old Jamie New lives on a council estate in Sheffield and doesn't quite fit in. He is terrified about the future, but little does he know – he is going to be a sensation. Supported by his brilliant loving mum and surrounded by his friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness into the drag queen spotlight. Filmed live from London's West End, with songs that have the wow factor, this funny, fabulous, feel-good, musical sensation will sweep you away on a tide of mischief, warmth and exuberance.

HOLY LANDS

(France, Belgium, 2018) Director: Amanda Sthers In English OUTshine Synopsys: Facing a crossroads in life, lapsed Jew and former cardiologist Harry (Academy Award Nominee James Caan) leaves New York and his family with an unlikely plan – to start a pig farm in Nazareth. His conflict with the town Rabbi, Moshe Cattan (BAFTA Award Winner Tom Hollander), slowly turns into a friendship that leads him to reevaluate his relationship with his estranged family, including his difficult ex-wife (Rosanna Arquette), 34-year-old student daughter, and gay playwright son (Golden Globe Award Winner Jonathan Rhys Meyers). Holy Lands is an emotional, humorous and dramatic story about the passage of time and the connections between people and family.

MARILYN

(Argentina, Chile, 2018) Director: Martín Rodríguez Redondo In Spanish, with English subtitles OUTshine Synopsys: Marcos and his family work as ranch hands. His father and brother handle the heavier tasks while Marcos stays home near his mother. Each has a path to follow, yet Marcos bides his time waiting for Carnival, the one moment where he can let his true self out to shine. Marilyn is a nuanced story of rural oppression, prejudice, and homophobia where characters are pushed to their limits to an unavoidable and desperate conclusion. Based on a shocking real case, Walter Rodriguez gives a powerful breakthrough lead performance as a boy confronted with the impossibility of being who he wants to be.

PAPI CHULO

(Ireland, 2018) Director: John Butler In English OUTshine Synopsys: Cast adrift in Los Angeles, lonely TV weatherman Sean (Golden Globe Winner Matt Bomer) drives past a middle-aged Latino migrant worker standing outside a hardware store looking for work. He decides to hire this kind-looking man – to be his friend. Sean is young, gay and white; Ernesto is portly, straight and married. Despite the language barrier and having nothing in common, they build a sort of friendship – until Sean becomes consumed with a deeper obsessive need. Papi Chulo is a black comedy about loneliness and the desire to find connection across clear racial and socio-economic lines. #08 2019 WIREMAG.COM 17

RETABLO

(Peru, Germany, Norway, 2017) Director: Alvaro Delgado Aparicio In Spanish and Quechua, with English subtitles OUTshine Synopsys: 14-year-old Segundo is following in his father's footsteps in the traditional folk art of crafting intricate, artisan story-boxes. Segundo reveres his father, and when he stumbles across a heartbreaking secret his father is harboring, Segundo will come to face the raw reality of his deeply religious and conservative landscape, as well as a more profound connection with his father than he'd ever imagined. Retablo masterfully explores the weight of heritage, the boundaries of love, and the burdens of family expectations, as well as the complexity of accepting our parents for who they really are.

(France, 2018) Director: Camille Vidal-Naquet In French, with English subtitles OUTshine Synopsys: Twenty-two-year-old Leo works as a prostitute. The men come and go without complications until Leo develops feelings for Ahd, who is actively seeking escape from his life of nightly hookups with lonely old men. Leo, in contrast, seems to not know or desire any other kind of life, despite friends and doctors questioning his lifestyle. Despite the physical toll of his work and the humiliation that may accompany it, Leo prizes his freedom and never lets go of his ability to love and be loved.

TACKLING LIFE

(Germany, 2018) Director: Johannes List In English and German, with English subtitles OUTshine Synopsys: Adam, Nico and Su are members of Germany's first gay rugby team. Tackling Life portrays their everyday lives and follows them into the world of the sport, showing their struggle for recognition – in competition with the hetero regional league teams – as well as their community involvement: gathering money at colorful fundraisers and visiting schools to give anti-bullying workshops. Looking beyond the surface of self-presentation and cliché, we focus on how our trio copes with the challenges of everyday life and their search for belonging. Alternating aggressive, vibrant athletics with quiet observation, the film is fragile and profound, but also spectacular and loud.

TELL IT TO THE BEES

(UK, 2018) Director: Annabel Jankel In English OUTshine Synopsys: Gripped by a failing marriage and the responsibilities of having a young son, Lydia (Critic's Choice Nominee Holliday Grainger) finds solace in her growing bond with the town's recently returned female doctor Jean (Academy & Golden Globe Award Winner Anna Paquin). But this is the 1950s in post-WWII rural Scotland, and the women's relationship prompts raised eyebrows in their provincial circles. Based on the novel by Fiona Shaw, Tell It To The Bees is a story of courage in the face of terrifying intolerance and a heart-wrenching portrait of love against all odds. 18 WIREMAG.COM #08 2019

THE BLONDE ONE

(Argentina, 2019) Director: Marco Berger In Spanish, with English subtitles OUTshine Synopsys: In the suburbs of Buenos Aires, Gabriel has just moved in with his colleague, Juan. Shy and reserved, Gabo is reluctant to follow Juan's wandering hands and meaningful looks. With a revolving door of beauties streaming out of Juan's bedroom, his machismo seems firmly in place. However, the attraction between the two men is undeniable. What starts out as a sexual relationship based on convenience of location soon develops into the engrossing evolution of a tender and intimate relationship, which is as sweet as it is heartbreaking. As reality begins to intrude on the couple's homemaking fantasy, something has to give, or does it?

THE ICE KING

(UK, 2018) Director: James Erskine In English OUTshine Synopsys: John Curry transformed ice-skating from a dated sport into an exalted art form. Coming out on the night of his Olympic win in 1976, he became the first openly gay Olympian in a time when homosexuality was not even fully legal. Toxic yet charming; rebellious yet elitist; emotionally aloof yet spectacularly needy; ferociously ambitious yet bent on self-destruction, this is a man forever on the run from his father's ghost, his country, and even his own self. John Curry was no activist, but an artist expressing his authentic self – yet in a world where his existence was taboo, his life was unavoidably political.

THE SHINY SHRIMPS

(France, 2019) Director: Maxime Govare and Cédric Le Gallo In French OUTshine Synopsys: Matthias, an Olympic swimming champion at the end of his career, makes a homophobic statement on TV. His punishment: coach the Shiny Shrimps, a very flamboyant, very bad and very LGBTQ water polo team. They have only one thing in mind: to qualify for the Gay Games in Croatia where the hottest international LGBTQ athletes will compete. It's the start of a bumpy and joyful ride. If the Bad News Bears were a water polo team and LGBTQ, they would be the Shiny Shrimps. Faster, higher, stronger… and fabulous.
