JURASSIC WEEKEND Salisbury Cathedral will be celebrating all things dinosaur this October half term, and there'll even be a visit from a Tyrannosaurus Rex!

T

his October Salisbury Cathedral is going Jurassic, or more accurately a bit Cretaceous, with a half-term experience for kids that includes an encounter with Tyrannosaurus Rex, the two-legged carnivorous dinosaur with powerful jaws and small claw-like front legs.

Jurassic Weekend will offer kids the chance to be part of their own video about being chased through the jungle by a dinosaur

The giant dinosaur’s visit is part of the Cathedral’s Jurassic Weekend on Saturday October 26 – Monday 28 October with a special programme of activities exploring the earth before man, including performance, workshops and crafting.

"Hands-on dinosaurthemed craft workshops will run throughout the weekend" Jam, an animatronic dinosaur standing 2m high and measuring 4m from his nose to the tip of his tail, is the star of the Teach Rex show that takes children through the evolution of the dinosaur. The friendly T-Rex shares the latest scientific thinking about how these huge beasts moved (not much faster than man), hunted (in packs like wolves), where they originated from (T-Rex is related to birds not reptiles) and T-Rex intelligence (brighter than at first thought). Created by two former primary school teachers Sam Bryan and Joseph Parsonage, the Teach Rex shows are complemented by Green Screen Workshops where children can help to make a video about being chased through the 10

THESOUTHWILTSMAGAZINE

jungle by a dinosaur. Whilst the finished product looks like an extract from Jurassic Park, behind the scenes these workshops will draw out creative thinking skills and vocabulary work as the children build up the scenario for the video. Hands-on dinosaur-themed craft workshops will run throughout the weekend - all sessions are free and families can drop in any time on those dates except during services. Young visitors can also follow a specially prepared Fossil Trail around the Cathedral, uncovering traces of the building’s Jurassic past embedded in the very stones from which it is built. The Faraday Institute from the University of Cambridge are laying on drop in sessions on fossils and evolution (on Saturday only) whilst on Monday 28 October there are two exciting stalls to explore in the South Transept. Between 10.30am and 4pm children can

discover some of the secrets of the seabed with Wessex Archaeology and learn how they use Marine Geophysics to preserve archaeology and inform the construction of wind farm, and between 10am and 2pm there’s a chance to handle and find out about fossils on the Jurassic Coast Trust stall. Go online to view dates, times and ticket prices for the Teach Rex Shows and Green Screen workshops and for more details of the Jurassic Weekend. • salisburycathedral.org.uk

TIME TO BAKE

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday 27 September is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. FRAN STEVENS, aka The Food Wife, offers some delicious recipes to bake if you’re taking part.

Makes approx. 20

Here is an easy cookie recipe that you can whip up in no time. They are also perfect to bake with children. I make the dough the night before but you can use it straight away. You could always swap the chocolate and cranberries for something else, but these are a winning combination.

Ingredients 125g caster sugar 100g soft light brown sugar 125g butter, softened 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 large egg, beaten 225g self-raising flour 100g white chocolate chips

85g dried cranberries Method Cream together the two sugars and butter until pale in colour (a couple of minutes in an electric mixer should do it). Add the vanilla and egg. Beat again, this time slowly. Add the flour and beat until completely smooth. Fold in the chocolate and cranberries. Use a large piece of grease-proof paper and lie it flat on your work surface. Place the dough onto the paper and then use the paper to roll into a fat sausage. Twist the ends to keep it tight and then place in the fridge to chill, until ready to use

(alternatively, use immediately by leaving this stage out and simply putting spoonfuls of the mixture onto prepared baking trays). Preheat your oven to 180ºC. Line baking trays with baking parchment. Cut slices of the prepared dough and place on the trays (it should make 20 cookies). Leave space in between them as they will spread when cooking. Bake for 8 - 10 minutes. They will still be soft when you remove them from the oven, but will set as they cool. Allow to cool fully on a wire rack. Store in an airtight container. THESOUTHWILTSMAGAZINE

Using the bananas makes for a wet batter but allows you to use less fat and sugar than a standard cake. I have chosen to pair the sweet banana with chunks of bitter dark chocolate. Not only a great combination but it also gives you delicious pools of chocolate throughout the cake. Ingredients 110g softened butter 60g caster sugar 2 large eggs, beaten 2 large / 3 medium / 4 small very ripe bananas, mashed 1 tsp vanilla extract 170g self raising flour 100g dark chocolate, either use chips or break a bar into pieces Method Cream together the butter and sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating the mix after each addition. Add the vanilla extract. Fold in half of the mashed banana, followed by half of the flour. Repeat with the remaining banana and flour. Fold through the chocolate pieces. 18

Pour into a lined 2lb (900g) loaf tin and bake in a preheated oven at 180ºC fan for 50 mins, or until golden, risen and springs back to the touch. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in its tin for half an hour before transferring to a wire rack. Store in an airtight container and it should last a few days.

Makes 12 One of my favourite puddings is apple and blackberry crumble. Sweet and a little tart all at the same time, and just a bowl of comfort.

Method In a jug, mix together the milk, oil and egg. Lightly combine the apple, blackberries, flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon and baking powder in a bowl. Add the liquid to the dry mix and gently fold into each other. Do not over mix it. Fill a muffin tray with 12 cases. Put a tbsp of mixture into each case. Then divide any remaining mixture equally between the cases Use your fingers to rub the crumble topping ingredients together in a bowl. Sprinkle over the top of each muffin. Bake in a preheated oven at 200ºC fan for 20-25 minutes (mine were ready at 22 minutes). Leave in the tray for 10 minutes and then transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Here is a muffin version which is simple to make and ideal with a cup of tea for the obligatory tea and cake. Find more recipes at: thefoodwife.co.uk These are best eaten on the day but will be perfectly edible for a few days (if they last that long). I zapped them for 20 seconds in the microwave after the first day but they could also be frozen. Remember that when making muffins do the minimum amount of mixing. The batter should only just be combined and will be lumpy – that’s good! It makes for a light muffin.

Many fruit bowls will gather a collection of over-ripe bananas from time to time and making a loaf cake with them is a great way of using them up, especially if, like me, you will only eat a banana when it’s slightly green.

Ingredients For the muffins 1 egg, beaten 60ml oil 120ml milk 200g plain flour 100g caster sugar 2 tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 1 tsp ground cinnamon 2 eating apples, peeled and cored then cut in to a medium dice 120g blackberries For the crumble topping 25g cold butter, cubed 25g sugar 50g oats ½ tsp ground cinnamon

PREPPING YOUR HOUSE FOR RENTAL

MARYAM CALVERT at Northwood Salisbury gives you some advice about putting your property on the rental market.

I

f you are thinking of renting out your property, the first thing you are going to need to do is prepare it for potential tenants. Becoming a landlord is not as simple as putting an advert online and giving the keys to the first person who can afford to pay the rent and deposit.

You need to establish the kind of people who will be renting your home to determine if it needs to be furnished

You will no doubt have a lot of questions whizzing around in your mind. Questions like: • How much can I charge? • What legal requirements must I meet? • What happens if things go wrong? • What needs to be done to the property before I can rent it out? In this article we intend to give some “rule of thumb” advice, however, please do not solely rely on this article. We strongly advise you to research your local area, the regulations and most importantly seek specific advice for your circumstances. Of course, at Northwood we are always happy to help.

amount of rent you should charge. We offer a free market appraisal should you want some advice.

DECORATING & RENOVATING Depending on the condition of the property and the tenants you want to attract, you may need to consider decorating and/or renovating the property.

Not every property will require renovations but there are a few points to consider: • A fresh coat of paint throughout will DECIDING UPON THE give tenants a blank canvas. If you have a trusted agent like Northwood helping you, they will be able to give you an objective view on the work that will need to be done to the property and they will be able to recommend reliable and trusted local tradesmen that can carry out the work for you.

“Deciding which sort of tenant, you are looking to attract will depend on your circumstances, the property and its location” FURNISHED VS UNFURNISHED You’ll need to decide whether you are going to provide your rental property unfurnished, partially furnished or fully furnished. This will depend on the type of tenant you are hoping to attract. Students, for example, will most likely need furniture provided for them, a family moving into a house may have all

house & home their own furnishings, whereas first time renters may need a partially furnished property. Deciding which sort of tenant, you are looking to attract will depend on your circumstances, the property and its location, for example, an apartment in a bustling city centre is far more likely to attract a professional tenant, whereas a house with a large garden will undoubtedly attract a family.

Good kitchens and bathrooms are attractive to potential tenants

FINDING A TENANT With the popularity of online portals such as Right Move and Zoopla you can be forgiven for thinking that marketing your property will be easy. However, there is a little more to it all, a picture paints a thousand words so complimentary photography that shows your property in its best light is a must. Accurate descriptions and research into points that are important to potential tenants are also vitally important.

DIY OR LETTING AGENT Who looks after your rental property is going to be a big consideration. The DIY approach does take a lot of work, probably much more than you think. For example, are you able to respond to maintenance issues? What will you do if your tenant falls behind in their payments or worse doesn’t pay at all? Handing over the property management to a letting agent can save a lot of stress and most agents will have different letting service options.

LANDLORD RESPONSIBILITIES When preparing your property to rent, it is a good idea to understand landlord responsibilities as this will have a bearing on what needs to be done. Here are a few pointers to consider: • Check whether your local council operates a registration scheme which is designed to maintain standards. This is mandatory in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland and is becoming increasingly common in England. • As a landlord, you have a legal responsibility to keep your rental property safe and fit to inhabit. That includes things like ensuring that all gas equipment and appliances are safe to use and are installed correctly. This is an annual requirement and a copy of the safety certificate must be provided to the tenant. Here are a few other things to consider: • You will need to have an Energy Performance Certificate for your property, in Scotland this must be displayed in the property. • Once you have a tenant, you will need to keep their deposit in a government-approved scheme to protect it.

• As a landlord you also have the responsibility of checking that your tenant has the right to rent your property, so checks will need to be carried out. • You will need to ensure the property fire safety is up to standard and have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed in the property. • An electrical safety inspection may be required. • Tenancy agreement – now more complex than ever, it is vital your rental agreement reflects your requirements and protects you and your tenant’s interests. • You will need to (depending on the agreement you have) inform or seek permission from your mortgage provider before renting out the property. You will also need specialist landlord insurance instead of your standard home insurance. These are just a few of the new responsibilities you take on as a new landlord. Don’t worry, it is not as daunting as it looks on first appearance. If you need assistance with these and any aspect of preparing your property to rent, talk to us at 56 Castle Street, Salisbury or call 01722 330066. • northwooduk.com THESOUTHWILTSMAGAZINE

FEELING HOT HOT HOT

for one am delghted to see the back of summer. When it gets hot in Britain we love complaining that we “haven’t even had a summer we’ve just had rain”, or that “it’s so hot you could fry an egg on the pavement” (delete as appropriate). Even the unions are getting involved. This summer it made the news that the Trades Union Congress (TUC) believed that employers should allow staff to work flexibly and have a relaxed dress code during heatwaves. TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said: “It’s in bosses’ interests to provide a cool and comfortable work environment.” The union wants people to be able to travel at different times, work from home and wear more casual clothing. It added that staff should have breaks more often, that cold drinks should be available and that workers should, if possible, be given

conditioning and being at the top of a large building in the middle of a city did make it a trifle stuffy. Our employers, to their credit, would set up dozens of fans but they only served to blow the hot air around the room, clearing desks of any paperwork that hadn’t been pinned down and generally making everyone feel a bit icky. One poor soul wore a wig to hide her alopecia…let’s just say that did not end well!! Our employers were though, apparently, way ahead of the times. On warm days they’d send a few people off on afternoon ice lolly runs and would allow us to ditch the shirt and tie in favour of something looser fitting and cooler. The TUC would be so proud. I have to say though, it wasn’t all great. You see the problem with allowing employees this much

It reminded me of a time when, many years ago, I worked in a large office building in Bath. It was top floor and looked out over the city centre. Fantastic views but unfortunately it had no air 30 THESOUTHWILTSMAGAZINE

sartorial freedom is that they, well, think they have sartorial freedom and that idea is apparently open to very wide interpretation. We had much to deal with, tiny vest tops that were much too tiny and frankly much too vesty, women who deemed super mini-skirts as being office appropriate, and colleagues whose hygiene regimes were clearly not as

rigorous as others wearing sleeveless tops. It wasn’t fantastic. Then there was the chap who decided to take donning shorts to the next level. He was a bit of an athlete you see, and where most of the men wore chino or combat-style shorts, he instead opted for running briefs. He may have presented us with an image we couldn’t now unsee but I’m sure they kept him nice and cool! Phil Rockliffe
