Winston Preparatory School

NY | CT | NJ | CA | Transitions (17-21+) | Online Winston Preparatory School, founded in 1981, is a national school network offering students with learning differences including dyslexia, executive functioning difficulties (ADHD), and nonverbal learning disorders (NVLD), a highly individualized, holistic, and responsive education. At the heart of what makes Winston Prep a most unique and effective program is our commitment to providing skills-based remediation tailored to meet the precise needs of each student. Rather than teaching to the “mean,” which reflects the process of teaching to the average skill level expected of the class, we design programming that directly targets each student’s learning profile, one that is profoundly understood through extensive and ongoing assessment using the Continuous Feedback System (CFS). For this reason, our students are grouped together not by age or grade, but by learning profile, allowing them to receive remediation that meets them where they are in both strengths and needs. While teaching to the mean involves implementing instruction that is designed to reach the most typical learner, teaching to the learning profile entails a much more nuanced and individualized approach that is skill-driven and goal-directed, ensuring that the specific and unique facets of each student’s learning needs are addressed and continuously monitored for progress. Additionally, students participate in daily 1:1 instruction through Winston Prep’s Focus Program, targeting their individual goals and areas for skill development. Over the last decade, Winston Prep’s individualized education model resulted in a 99.7% high school graduation rate, with 80% of those graduates college-bound (compared to only 33% nationwide for students with learning differences).
