Thank you, teachers!

I

very clearly remember my 4th-grade teacher, Miss Clark. She was so smart, and pretty and kind, and she seemed to exist entirely for my class alone. In fact, I still recall my distress at learning that she was getting married. I thought, “Does that mean she doesn’t love us the most anymore?” After her wedding, she hadn’t changed at all, of course, and my love for her continued apace. My 2nd-grade teacher, Miss Jainchill, knew just what to say and how to help when I was bullied by other kids, and she was proud of me for being good at spelling. In high school, my Latin and Greek teachers were the best: funny, irreverent, committed to bow ties and double entendre in poetry, they made centuries-old stories and speeches relevant and fascinating. My Ornithology teacher took us out in early spring to the freezing New Hampshire coastline to look for harlequin ducks and other water birds, opening a previously hidden ecosystem up to us. My (male) Calculus teacher seemed to understand the burden I felt being the only girl in the class and paid particular attention to the dynamics of participation and equity.

I have mentioned only a few teachers here, and I could list so many more. In fact, despite my subsequent academic life in the humanities and American literature, the teachers that come most easily to mind taught other subjects. I loved those subjects because I loved the teachers.

The best teachers open new worlds for their students. The best teachers see a student’s potential, most often before the student herself does.

The best teachers demand excellence, completely certain that all their students can achieve it. The best teachers show their students how much learning matters, and how far they can go with their knowledge.

I know you remember that teacher from your Winsor days. In fact, given the remarkable longevity of our faculty, you might even see your teacher celebrated on the cover of this issue! Inside, you can read about how these six, who have reached their 20-year Winsor teaching milestones, have made a difference to hundreds of students, shown those students what they can achieve, and helped those students believe in themselves.

I could not be happier for our students that they get to spend their days with teachers who love them so much. I hope you will take a moment to recall how they changed your world, and I hope you will take a moment to tell someone else your story. Thank you, teachers! — sarah pelmas

Hey Now, You’re A Rock Star‌ Class IV students embraced their inner rock stars, showcasing newly honed vocal, instrumental, and performance skills in a concert that marked the end of the elective Rock On: A History of American Pop Music. The generous arts block schedule allows students to learn to play guitar, bass, piano, synthesizer, drums, and percussion instruments in conjunction with the study of the origins and evolution of music.

ALL ABOARD! Traveling the country on a “50 Capitals Tour,” C-SPAN’s state-of-the-art motor coach made a stop at Winsor on October 15, inviting students on board for a behind-the-scenes look at the coverage and educational resources the primary, non-profit news source offers.

In addition to relevance to the study of American government, insight into C-SPAN’s “fly on the wall approach” to public affairs and political events coverage and how it differs from other networks offered timely perspective on the recent live coverage of the Supreme Court nomination hearings.

Massachusetts State Representative Chynah Tyler also paid the students a special visit, boarding the bus for a discussion about politics, public service and the importance of following your passion.

Field Hockey Cinches First NEPSAC Title

V

arsity Field Hockey brought home the first NEPSAC Class C Championship title in Winsor history and finished the 2018 season with an impressive 16-4-0 record.

On the heels of a tough 2017 season, “winning was never really on our agenda until the tournament—it just happened naturally because of our emphasis on teamwork and how much we all loved to play together,” says co-captain Nancy Kaneb ’19. Co-captain Talia Ward ’19 agrees, adding, “The team decided that our motto would be ‘all it takes, is all you’ve got.’ That really turned out to be true.”

Loyal, cheering fans erupted along the sidelines as Winsor cinched the win over No. 1 ranked Pingree to secure a place in the finals and then went on to capture the title after a 3-0 win vs. Ethel Walker. “We’d like to thank the fans who traveled north and south to cheer the team on,” says coach Erin Calamari. “We are so very lucky to be supported by such an amazing community.”

Class I’s Wild Rumpus This year’s Class I Play was a light-hearted musical adaptation of the beloved children’s picture book “Where the Wild Things Are.” Director Jeremy Johnson worked closely with the students on the production, which fosters collaboration and relationships among the new students year after year. With magical set design and production under theater technical director Andres Puigbo, musical direction from Penny Ouellette, choreography from Carey McKinley, and costumes design by Jessica Pribble, the show was a raucous success.

WELLNESS AT WINSOR Guided by the new Wellness Department, Winsor’s Health and Wellness Program combines curriculum, events, speakers and resources to best support students’ mental, physical and intellectual health.

Throughout the year, classroom learning promotes essential dialog on everything from nutrition and exercise, to stress and positive life influences. Students think and work together, sharing their findings with peers, whether via hallway posters, assemblies, or special events like the Class IV Health Fair.

This fall, Winsor welcomed Dr. Jill Walsh, an expert on social media, to share her fresh perspective and practical insights with parents. And in January, students got an unforgettable lesson on perspective and the importance of being kind from motivational speaker Kelsey Tainsh.

Members of the Wellness Department also post reflections and take-aways on the new Winsor Blog.

Although the topics will vary widely throughout the year, an underlying message prevails: above all else, nothing is more important to your health and well-being than knowing your worth and practicing kindness and self-care.

SERVICE: A PATH TO JUSTICE The Winsor community gathered for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration on Monday, January 22.

For 26 years, the event has united and reminded us of our common humanity in a world that too often spotlights what divides us.

Following a welcome by Head of School Sarah Pelmas, Dehlia Umunna P’20 introduced the program with a call to all to serve. Rachel Rollins, the first woman District Attorney of Suffolk County and the first woman of color to hold the position in Massachusetts, shared words of wisdom that truly inspired. Karilyn Crockett ’91 delivered a message of empowerment, thanking Winsor for equipping young women “to do battle.” Karen Torres ’19 and Jamila O’Hara ’19 embodied the spirit of change, calling for action in the fight for justice. Ten Lower Schoolers delivered a stirring spoken word piece, and WISE raised voices and spirits.

Concerts Celebrate the Arts

T

hroughout the year, concerts in the David E. and Stacey L. Goel Theater in the Nancy and Richard Lubin Center for Performing Arts welcome audiences to celebrate the performing arts.

The fall concert featured Upper School Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra and Chorale (supported by Mr. Mosher, Mr. Schopf, and Ms. Ouellette on guitar, drums, and piano); Felicia Brady’s “Drum Strum & More” class; Small Chorus; and the anticipated first performance of the year by Senior Small.

The holiday concert showcased vocal performances by the Lower School Chorus, Upper School Chorale, Small Chorus, and Senior Small, as well as inspiring instrumental performances by the Percussion Ensemble, the Lower and Upper School Orchestras, and the Intergenerational Winsor Chorus and Orchestra.

The Lower School Dance Ensemble and “Hip Hop Meets Ballet” class put the spotlight on bodies in motion in January, performing original choreography with lighting design by students in the Stagecraft elective.

XC Excels in First Division 1 Season Though small in numbers and relatively young, Winsor Cross Country had a spectacular 2018 season. Competing for the first time in Division 1, the team finished the regular season undefeated in the EIL, took home it’s 4th straight EIL Championship title, and brought home silver in the New England Division 1 Championships.

CLASSROOM TRANSFORMED INTO 3-D CELL MUSEUM BUBBLE This October, a new Class II science project offered students, faculty and staff the opportunity to crawl inside a cell for a closer look. After weeks studying the structure and function of the organelles inside cells, Class II students worked together to select, design, prototype and create 3-D organelles to scale from recycled materials, then assembled them inside a life-sized, inflatable bubble. As a bonus, a rap about organelles also worked its way into the curriculum.

If excitement over cell structure and rapping about organelles are any indication, the students learned more than organism form and function—they learned how much fun the learning could be.

Meg Madison ’24 finishing 2nd with a time of 18:44, setting the record for the fastest time in Winsor school history. Meg and Clare Quinn ’19 led the way for the Wildcats in the NEPSTA Championships, taking 2nd and 6th, and earning spots on the All-New England Team. All seven varsity runners earned EIL Honorable Mentions or All-League distinctions. Coach Moriah Musto was named EIL Cross Country Coach of the Year.

Machinal On Friday and Saturday, November 9 and 10, 2018, Winsor Upper School students delivered a stirring performance of the “intensely theatrical, shocking and decidedly feminist” play “Machinal.”

Machinal is the result of three years of dedicated study and research in design, directing, and dramaturgy by director Jeremy Johnson of Winsor’s Performing Arts faculty. The production itself served as his final thesis project as he completes his master’s in directing through the Theater Conservatory at Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Bringing the play to life proved a worthy challenge for cast, crew, and director. Mr. Johnson shared his personal insight in the Playbill’s Director’s Note: “This play has intimidated me for a long time. It’s weird, it’s dark, it doesn’t care whether it’s liked or not and it was penned in a moment of extreme rage and frustration.

Playwright Sophie Treadwell seems to have written the play as a warning to young women of her time,” he notes.

“Her work points to the problems in a raw and searing way and pushes the audience to grapple with these issues during the show and after they leave...

I’m so grateful to the Machinal cast and the Performing Arts faculty for going on this difficult and challenging journey with a play that feels more immediate than ever.”

A Tradition of Service “Single Parent Family Outreach (SPFO) was one of the first community service clubs at Winsor, and it has been a significant part of the community for over 20 years,” notes Michaela Stanfield ’19, co-club leader.

This year, the club’s annual Thanksgiving drive collected enough food to provide 70 families with a hearty meal. Club members delivered the donations to the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston—where they also volunteer once a month—and worked together to prepare meal baskets for delivery to families in need.

In January, lower schoolers also dedicated a full day to helping those in need in the greater Boston area. Organized annually by members of the Parents’ Association, Class I volunteered at the Pine Street Inn; Class II at Cradles to Crayons; Class III with organizations dedicated to fighting hunger in Eastern Massachusetts; and Class IV at schools serving our city’s most vulnerable children.

RED SOX FANS REJOICE! During a memorable assembly, the four gleaming Red Sox World Series trophies paid a surprise visit to Pilgrim Road. Red Sox President Sam Kennedy P’23 reflected on the team’s legacy before a packed theater following an introduction by daughter Ally Kennedy ’23. Winsor alumna Kathryn Quirk ’05, Red Sox Manager of Community Partnerships and Player Relations, inspired students with her tale of following her passion and effecting positive change in the community.

Spirits Soar During Spirit Week Each October, the Winsor campus comes alive with school pride for Spirit Week and Under the Lights (UTL), held this year October 15-19, 2018. Students, faculty and staff dress in themed costumes each day, and the week culminates with Friday’s Red Day, pep rally with class cheers, and athletics games under the lights.

GREEK SYMPOSIUM On Thursday, January 10, Winsor held the annual Class II Greek Symposium. Dressed in attire befitting the times, Class II students showcased the results of classroom study and topic-specific research of ancient Greek culture and history for parents, faculty and classmates.

Working in groups of three, students selected their topic and directed their research, making connections between ancient Greece and the modern world to better understand the civilization’s lasting impact.

Theresa Evenson Wins Pennypacker Prize for Teaching

S

cience faculty Theresa Evenson was honored as this year’s Pennypacker Prize winner during the annual Faculty-Trustee Dinner on December 4, 2018. Created in 2002, the Prize, named for Henriette Pennypacker Binswanger ’52, is given annually to a relatively new Winsor teacher to encourage the recipient’s continuing educational growth and development.

Ms. Evenson joined Winsor five years ago, breathing new life into the Class I and III science curricula. Collaborative and innovative, with a naturalist’s passion, she takes care to ensure her students are global scientists, engage with real-world problems, and participate in citizen science.

Always seeking new ways to apply learning to the real world, Ms. Evenson has helped students explore the Muddy River; create a community garden that supplies herbs and lettuce to the dining hall; and nurture adopted animals, including the Blanding’s turtle hatchlings that arrived this fall as part the HATCH program, a collaboration with Zoo New England. Whether as teacher, colleague, class coordinator and volunteer; or mentor, advisor, coach and friend, Ms. Evenson is thoughtfully inspiring Winsor students in the pursuit of science.

PND Forum: What It Means to Be American “It was, without a doubt, one of the most moving and profound experiences I have had in this community,” reflected Head of School Sarah Pelmas on the Parent Network for Diversity (PND) hosted forum, “What Does It Mean to Be An American?” A second opportunity to join the conversation was held later in the year.

“What stories we have among us!” Ms. Pelmas marveled in a blog post following the powerful exchange that took place that evening. “So many beautiful, harrowing, uplifting, maddening, inspiring stories of families determined to make the world better for themselves and their families,” and sharing “a singular focus on the importance of education.”

Whether on campus or at home around the table, Ms. Pelmas implores: we must keep sharing our stories. “It is the way we will grow as a people and a nation.”

Leaning into Discomfort: Global Forum 2019

C

hallenged to think for themselves, collaborate, and focus on process as much as outcome, Winsor students spent five days in January “leaning into discomfort” as they tackled the subject of disease as a global health crisis. “That phrase could be the motto for the 2019 Global Forum,” reflects Winsor’s director of global studies and head of the Global Forum planning committee Brian Didier, acknowledging that in light a host of growing global concerns, “there’s a lot of discomfort to lean into.”

In addition to asking the students to “face these uncomfortable truths and start thinking about solutions,” Mr. Didier also encouraged students to lean into the discomfort that comes with independent learning, reminding them that for five days, “YOU have control over your curriculum and classroom.”

Working in groups, students selected a specific country and a

disease crisis, then directed their research in order to explore solutions. The UNDP’s Sustainable Development Goal Number 3— Good Health and Well Being— served as a starting point, and the Design for Change framework helped guide students in their study.

A clearly defined rubric ensured each group was prepared to deliver their findings to a panel of parent judges on the final day. The two top teams from each division presented at a February 23 all-school assembly.

Held for only the second time this January, Winsor’s Global Forum grew out of more than a decade of work by the school’s faculty, rooted in the mission to educate girls to thrive and drive change in an increasingly com-

plicated world. The planners designed a five-day experience to engage students in global awareness, advocacy, problem solving, and project-based, student-centered learning.

Experts Offer Inspiration and Perspective On the opening day, Dr. Joia Mukherjee, chief medical officer of Partners in Health, inspired students and faculty with a stirring, interactive keynote on health and human rights.

An impressive lineup of workshops on days two and three featured experts in various fields, including many Winsor parents and alumnae. “We were so fortunate to have so many community members—both past and present—believe in our vision for the forum and the unique learning opportunity it presents,” says Ann-Marie Holland, economics and history teacher and a member of the Global Forum planning committee.

The Patni Family Global Fund The forum is made possible in part by the Patni Family Global Fund, established in memory of Naren Patni P’98 by his daughter, Ambika, Class of 1998, and his wife, Poonam Patni P’98. “During a remarkable life between two continents, Naren fundamentally transformed the software industry and his native India,” noted Mr. Didier in his remarks on the opening day of the forum. “As his daughter has said, he would have loved the hands-on aspect of our Global Forum. Her dad loved solving problems and diving deeply into topics. In supporting the Forum, the Patni family hopes to help each of you to develop a more global outlook so that you’ll give back to the world with your own bold new ideas.”

OUTDOOR EXPLORATION Outdoor exploration replaced classroom learning when Class I, III and IV headed out for their annual September retreats.

Project Adventure challenged Class I to reach new heights.

A day hike of Mt. Monadnock rewarded Class III. And Class IV backpacked and spent two nights without power—or a shower—in ‘carry in, carry out’ huts in the White Mountains as part of A Mountain Classroom (AMC) experience.

Working together in groups, problem solving and even facing fears (heights, spiders and composting toilets to name a few), the girls tested their own strengths and limitations, and experienced the power of peer support and encouragement.

Leadership training was a focus for Class IV, and throughout the 3-day excursion, the AMC team leaders facilitated group exercises centered around the leadership pillars of self-awareness, empathy, communication, problem solving and determination.

“When you see yourself as part of a group, you are committed to the greater goals of everyone—to finding happiness and contentment in a whole,” Ms. Pelmas said in her opening remarks this year, which so fittingly apply to what transpired during the class retreats.

Upper School Students Recognized Angela Su ’19

The Regeneron Science Talent Search named Angela Su ’19 a top 300 scholar for her project, “Highly-Efficient Capturing and HighlySensitive Whole-Slide Counting of Circulating Tumor Cells Using an Integrated Capillary Microchannel Device.” One of only 16 winners from Massachusetts, Angela was awarded $2,000, and Winsor received $2,000 to use toward STEM-related activities. Angela continues in a long Winsor tradition of scientific honors in “the most challenging and prestigious research-based high school science contest in the country.”

This summer, Jamila O’Hara ’19 participated in Project Success, a Harvard Program through which she conducted research at Children’s Hospital with Dr. Stamoulis on face and emotional processing in infants. As a result of her work— which has applications that may allow earlier diagnosis of children with autism spectrum­­— Jamila was awarded the John R. Moore Scholarship, given to the student that demonstrates excellence, initiative, and dedication to their research.

GENEROUS MINDED

Food for the Soul

B

eing asked to write for this column got me thinking about what it really means to be a “generous-minded” alumna. I did some research to discover how this, indeed, might be true of me. The word generous comes from the Latin generosus and is “characterized by a noble or kindly spirit, liberal in giving.” It means giving or willing to give freely, in the way you treat people, willing to see what is good about somebody or something.

A generous person gives more than is customary or anticipated.

I thought back about how I have been generous in my life.

The summer of my senior year at Winsor, I was a candy striper, volunteering at Boston Children’s Hospital.

At one point, I was asked to be the fortune-teller at a small fair for the patients. The challenge was that the children I was meeting were severely ill and likely to die young. My heart broke as I thought of these shortlived lives and what could I do to make them feel better. Simple words of kindness can make a difference in someone’s life.

After college, I became a successful knitwear designer in Europe and New York City. After 20 years, burnt out and thinking of next moves, I was drawn to food and wine. Imagining I would like to work in a restaurant,

I sought the advice of Danny Meyer.

He showed his own generosity by offering me a job in front of the house management at his first restaurant in Manhattan, Union Square Café.

It gave me the chance to learn the business from one of the best. I often greeted clients working side by side with him. One of the lessons he taught me was that grumpy diners

were people who just needed a little extra love. It was true and many times helped me calm awkward situations.

Danny also introduced me to Share our Strength, a nonprofit that helps to alleviate hunger. He served on its board and was involved in its main fundraising event, “Taste of the Nation,” which brought together the country’s best restaurants to donate

their products for an evening of superb food and wine tasting.

Volunteering at this event in NYC opened me to a new world. I went on to run the event in Aspen, Colorado, and was then invited to the Share our Strength annual conference on hunger.

As fun and interesting as the restaurant business was, I felt that I needed more fulfillment in my life.

Public health nutrition fit the bill. It addressed my love for food and my desire to have a positive meaningful impact. I have worked in this field for almost 20 years. After getting my master’s in nutrition education at Columbia University Teachers College, I started on a new path that

hated beans. I told her I was making hummus with magic beans. Yes, she liked the hummus but said she still hated beans. I had a group of parents that I met with for cooking classes several times a year, for two years. They would tell me what they wanted to learn and I would create a class around that. When we met, they would tell me all the foods that they had started eating because of the classes. It was a joyful situation.

I felt great that I was succeeding in increasing vegetable intake, and they felt great because they were eating more healthfully.

As an adjunct professor at NYU, I have taught community nutrition for 14 years. Teaching is more than

Talk about picky eaters!” has combined work as an early childhood nutrition consultant, teaching community nutrition at New York University, and helping at a progressive food pantry called Westside Campaign Against Hunger.

As an early childhood nutritionist, I have worked with mostly low-income New York families. When children came to preschool, most had never seen the cooked-from scratch meals that were served. Talk about picky eaters! My goal was that by the time they went on to kindergarten, every child would want to eat at least one vegetable besides potatoes. My most successful strategy was cooking classes with both children and their parents. One child said she

explaining the facts. Students are often not sure where they belong in the profession. Although it is not in my job description, I find it is important to help students find what they are passionate about so they will be happy and more successful. I always thought that is what a teacher does, but students have told me that I am one of the few professors who did this. I stay in touch with past students through LinkedIn and it is very satisfying to see their accomplishments. It feels good when I run into past students who thank me for what they learned in my class.

In 2001, I also became involved with Westside Campaign Against Hunger, now one of the largest food

pantries in the city. I helped start a free culinary program to give participants skills to provide healthy inexpensive meals at home and to get jobs. This program is now in its 17th year. For the past decade, I have also been on its Board of Directors, helping to guide the pantry to do the best job it can to provide healthy free food to those in need.

Lessons I learned while at Winsor were to do the right thing and do the best one can at whatever endeavor one undertakes. These lessons, I am certain, have contributed to my being a generous-minded woman.

In most of my pursuits I have tried to do more than what was expected, and I have felt better for doing so.

Giving or helping another feels good and develops relationships—it’s a win-win situation.

As a recent Huffington Post article observed, “More and more studies are highlighting the benefits of generosity on both our physical and mental health. Not only does generosity reduce stress, support one’s physical health, enhance one’s sense of purpose, and naturally fight depression, it is also shown to increase one’s lifespan.”

Generosity, the action of compassion, increases our interconnectedness and helps build community. It brings us greater happiness.

Mary Pickard Winsor wanted her students to have an aim in life beyond the traditional woman’s sphere of her day. A century later, the school continues to foster that attitude and still develops generous-minded women. As I begin my life in retirement, it is even more important to me to become part of my community and help those in need.

PROFILES IN GIVING

#LoveWinsor The school community rallied together for a record-breaking first Giving Day.

T

he Winsor community came alive on February 14, 2019 to celebrate Winsor’s first-ever Giving Day. Held on Valentine’s Day, what was originally conceived as a fun, philanthropic rallying point quickly turned into, well, a love-fest!

The love streamed out across social media and through Winsor’s website, emails and phone calls to the school. “Thank you for reminding me why I love Winsor so much!” wrote one alumna. “A perfect day and way to love Winsor,” said another.

In an incredible outpouring of support, Winsor surpassed the day’s original 200-donor mark by 10:00 a.m. to unlock a $50,000 anonymous challenge gift. Winsor then charged ahead toward a new goal of 500 total donors and an additional $25,000 challenge gift by the end of the day.

The final total would end up at an amazing 772 donors!

As momentum grew throughout the day, there was a buzz of excitement on campus; seniors followed progress on social media and flocked to participate in the Class VIII Gift—they reached 80% participation by the end of the day. Faculty and staff reached 86% participation and enjoyed their own mini giving day event featuring lots of chocolate and delicious treats prepared by the dining hall staff.

to alumnae donors. “I have been here since Class I and I love it more every day! Thank you for supporting us ♥” wrote a Class VIII student.

“Thank you for giving today and making our education possible! I love being at Winsor,” wrote a member of Class IV. Alumnae posted on social media and rallied their classmates to participate in the alumnae banner challenge. Congratulations to the Class of 2002, who won the prize with 31 classmates participating and will hang their banner in the school for the rest of the academic year.

“The joy and sense of community was palpable today in the hallways of Winsor and in the social media world,” said Sue Kim, Winsor’s Chief Advancement Officer. “I was so inspired and moved by the many posts of remembrance and love for Winsor on Giving Day. This was truly an outpouring of support and love for Winsor, and I am so grateful for everyone in our community who helped make it happen.”

On Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, beloved faculty spoke about their love for their students and for their colleagues in a series of videos.

In one video, 33-year P.E. faculty Laura Gregory says, “I’ve been here so long now that I am teaching some of your daughters, and I get to see a little bit of you in them… After class every day they thank me, and I’m like, no, thank you for letting me

have this opportunity to teach you.”

Faculty Treasures The tradition of beloved teachers dates to Winsor’s earliest days. A quarter century ago, a newer tradition began: an annual trustee dinner featuring milestone tributes. Since that first celebration, 75 devoted faculty and staff have been honored as they’ve reached two decades of service. Here, this year’s unprecedented “class” enjoys the honor of telling their Winsor stories.

ulian K. Braxton remembers his first introduction to Winsor as if it were yesterday.

Attending a job fair as he wrapped up his master’s at Harvard’s Ed School, he fell into a conversation with the late Diane Bezan. He loved the way the then associate director described teaching at Winsor. She had him sold right up until she told him that her school was all-girls. He’d never imagined that as a possibility—and didn’t imagine the school would want him. When he thanked her and started to walk away, though, Ms. Bezan followed him. “She said ‘All I ask is come and see who we are.’”

Twenty years later, “this is my second home,” he says. “My identity is so rooted in Winsor.” He’s not alone.

In fact, he’s part of an unprecedented “class” of nine individuals who together have called Winsor home since 1999.

“At most schools, a few brave souls make it to the 20-year mark,” reflected Head of School Sarah Pelmas at December’s trustee dinner honoring faculty and staff. “Here, it’s fast becoming only the first milestone, and a relatively early one at that!” This year’s event served as a reminder, in Ms. Pelmas’ words, that “this is simply the best faculty and staff you can find anywhere.”

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

How did they find their way to Winsor?

Jodi Kerble “felt like it was meant to be.” She was in New York City with a friend on a school break, and the two crossed paths with a girl in a Winsor jacket right after she heard she landed an interview; her friend told it was a sign. She still remembers the model lesson on scientific notation that she taught. What sticks with her most is the way students said “thank you” on their way out the door.

While “Winsor wasn’t on my radar,” says Valentina Páez, she’s thankful her teaching friends encouraged her to apply, including Atrium School colleagues who’d taught with Jim Jer-Don. “I was looking for a team of teachers to grow with, and I found that here.”

She laughs to recount what she told her interviewers: “If you’re looking for someone who’ll only teach grammar, don’t hire me.”

Gail Lima had taught college after getting her Ph.D., but a friend on Winsor’s faculty started her thinking that high school might be a better fit. A year after moving back to Boston, she land-

ed at Winsor herself. She remembers having lunch during her interview with a lively crew of faculty who were “engaged with teaching and just engaged with the world.”

Xiaodong Zhao knew Winsor first as a parent. Her daughter, Yijing Yang ’04, began two years earlier. A strong believer in single-sex schools, she asked former Head of School Carolyn Peter after a parent evening about the possibility of working at Winsor. Their conversation led to her first role, on the library staff.

When the school sought to add Mandarin Chinese to the curriculum, a search consultant realized that the best person for the position was already here.

Winsor was Felicia Brady-Lopez’s first stint at classroom teaching. Looking back, she vividly remembers sitting in her car in the school parking lot after the year ended, and thinking “I didn’t want to take a break.”

“I still have that feeling,” she says.

STUDENT-CENTERED

As much as Winsor has changed through the years, “what has stayed the same is the passion and curiosity of the students,” says Ms. Páez. She loves “the openness and enthusiasm they bring to the partnership of learning both in and outside the classroom.”

Her classmates echo that point. “The students are the best!” exclaims Ms. Kerble. “They’re motivated, cooperative, considerate.” In Ms. Brady-Lopez’s words, “they’re positive, passionate, and hungry to learn.” Ms. Zhao adds “energetic, involved, engaged” to the long list.

Ms. Lima loves students’ daily questions. “We feed off each other,” she says.

In every course she teaches, she builds in an element of independent research. When students dive into something on the own, they often

lose themselves in the moment. And they’re proud of what they’re doing.

She especially proud of “kids who didn’t see themselves as science kids” pushing themselves beyond where they thought they could go.

In a common refrain, Mr. Braxton says he takes the greatest pride in “the mentoring relationships that I’ve developed with my students—many of whom are now adults.”

“Optimistic” is one of the words that others most often use to describe him. “I can’t help but be optimistic: I teach Winsor students!” he says. He knows they’ll be agents of change in the future; after all, they already are as teenagers.

AGENTS OF CHANGE

Along the way, the 20-year veterans have been at the forefront of change at Winsor.

In Ms. Zhao’s first year of teaching Mandarin, she had only nine students in Class V. Since then, she has helped create and grow a thriving Chinese language program.

In World Languages, Ms. Páez has helped forge—and model—the faculty’s commitment to student-centered teaching and meaningful assessment.

“That has stayed strong because we have created a space for conversation, discussion, and collaboration.” Now, it is at the center of her daily work.

“When I first started, I thought I

was just teaching math,” Ms. Kerble reflects. “Now I feel like I’m teaching kids how to do math.” She advocates technology as “a bridge to become more student-centered.” With her focus on Lower School, she also has helped to create an identity and curriculum for Winsor’s youngest students.

In the sciences, Ms. Lima has had a hand in developing courses—from Marine Biology to AP Environmental Science to Independent Research— and promoting student opportunities beyond the classroom.

Ms. Brady-Lopez remembers bringing in instruments from home years ago to introduce a unit on guitar for her 7th graders. Those early initiatives

have morphed into classes that are mainstays of the curriculum. “We’ve always had a desire and reputation for really high quality music making,” she says. Since the opening of the Lubin-O’Donnell Center in 2015, “the arts have exploded.”

In the words of Mr. Braxton, whose own courses have become legendary and life-changing, “it’s a school that goes from strength to strength.”

TEACHERS AS LEARNERS

In their daily work, “I can’t imagine a group as passionate, engaged, and thoughtful as this faculty,” adds Mr. Braxton.

Ms. Kerble sees “fabulous” colleagues as part of Winsor’s culture.

“It’s who we are.” They are smart,

kind, supportive, inclusive—and funny.

They’re there when she needs a shoulder to lean on or someone to listen.

From the start, “I loved my department,” Ms. Lima says. In her university days, she had been the only woman among her teaching colleagues. At Winsor, she was surrounded by “sharp, strong women” who spoke their minds.

And they were “science geeks” who loved to learn. It’s an environment where “I’m as much a learner as the students are.”

Through the years, “the opportunity to transform the teaching and learning at Winsor has in turn transformed me,” adds Ms. Páez. “Every five years I press pause and evaluate my experience deeply.” Along the way, reflecting on her daily work has been incredibly rewarding.

Moreover, doing that with her teaching partner, Señor Jer-Don, “has been nothing short of magnificent!”

“You can only get better by being reflective,” agrees Ms. Kerble. One thing she likes most about teaching is having a job that cycles. It lets her continually reevaluate her approach.

With each class, Ms. Brady-Lopez seeks “to tune into the students, what they need, where they are.” Every year brings something new. In her Music Production course, for one, “I’m constantly learning,” whether that’s how to create soundscapes or edit podcasts.

ONE WISH

What do they wish for Winsor? On a broad level, “I hope we keep growing, keep thriving,” says Ms. Brady-Lopez.

A thriving school means many things to them. Mr. Braxton hopes for “more connection to the city.” Ms. Zhao dreams of a less grade-driven culture, at Winsor and beyond. Ms. Kerble wishes students would hold onto their love for learning, and not allow stress to diminish it. Ms. Lima hopes any girl who’s passionate about coming to Winsor will have access to financial aid.

For Ms. Páez, “my one wish is that we make even greater progress in our commitment to diversity in our student body and faculty, embracing the way that this transforms our school and community.” Her 20-year classmates universally echo that point.

They see greater diversity as one of the most vital changes at Winsor during their tenures.

AS TIME GOES BY

So far, “I’ve been here almost half my life,” Ms. Kerble notes, “and it’s a huge piece of who I am.” It doesn’t feel possible that it’s been 20 years.

After all, “the kids are always the same age,” she jokes. “They definitely keep you young.” Learning excites her— and makes her believe “there’s got to be more.”

What’s the best part of the day for Mr. Braxton? It’s always some moment in the classroom. He recalls one from a long block the week before. After 75 minutes, a student asked aloud, “It’s over already?”

Asked if it seems like 20 years have passed, he responds with a question of his own, “How did it happen so quickly?” Some people have jobs in which they stare at the clock. He gets so engaged that he can’t believe when it’s 3 o’clock already.

The historian in him realizes, “we’re now a part of Winsor’s history.”

A Coaching Legend “I actually wrote my college admissions essay about being coached by Lisa Stone and how she taught me to embrace being passionate and truly giving yourself over to the thing that you enjoy—for me, crew. My relationship with her has continued to grow and I still consider her to be one of the most important people in my life. I can say without any doubt that without Lisa, I would not be the person I am today. She gave me space to grow from a painfully shy 14-year-old (why did I choose a sport where I had to boss people around?

No idea) to a varsity coxswain and team leader. Her pathway into the rowing world has opened up incredible doors for me. I so appreciate that Lisa coaches us to be more than just excellent athletes and competitors but also good people. I carry her principles of sportsmanship with me today and worked hard to expand that culture to my college team and the teams that I have coached.

I cannot say enough about how lucky Winsor has been to have Lisa. She has touched the lives of so many Winsor women. There are few things that brighten my day more than hearing Lisa’s laugh.”

A Street Grows

in

Follow Sarah Beatty Buller ’84 on a life-changing journey.

She’s working to restore buildings— and faith—on a street at the center of the civil rights movement.

n 2012, Sarah Beatty Buller ’84 and husband Mark Buller left their home in Manhattan on a reconnaissance mission. They were headed to Montgomery, Alabama, where Mark’s building-material distribution company, MarJam, was establishing a new branch. Sarah—an entrepreneur whose own companies, Green Depot and Greenmaker Industries, serve sustainable building construction (see our 2009 Bulletin profile)—was eager to explore the downtown neighborhood where the Freedom Riders

and the 1965 Freedom Marchers had fought for justice.

Once there, the pair made their way down Dexter Avenue, what Sarah calls “the spine and nerve center” of downtown Montgomery. The street is saturated in history: At the western end of the thoroughfare rises the Court Street Fountain, where, after debarking from the Alabama River, slaves were herded to an auction block. Near that same fountain, a century later, seamstress Rosa Parks would board a bus and refuse to cede her seat to a white man,

sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Overlooking the fountain is the telegraph office whence issued orders for Confederate troops to fire on Fort Sumter (per local lore, “the telegram that began the war between the states”).

I always said, “Why can’t I sit there [in the front of the bus]?” You would go to the front of the bus; you’d put your money in, walk back out, and go to the back.

A few blocks east stands the Dexter Avenue (now Dexter Avenue King Memorial) Baptist Church, founded in 1877 in a slave trader’s pen, where a young Martin Luther King Jr. pastored from 1954 to 1960. King coordinated much of the civil rights movement, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, from his office on the church’s lower floor. Just beyond looms the State Capitol, where Jefferson Davis was inaugurated in 1861 as the president of the Confederate States of America.

One hundred and four years later, King delivered his powerful “How Long, Not Long” speech on the Capitol steps following voting-rights activists’ final, successful Freedom March from Selma to Montgomery.

Dexter Avenue encompasses the breadth of Americans’ shared history, from depravity to heroism. Yet the Bullers were shocked to see the historic street barren and neglected, pocked with vacancies and blight.

“It was a ghost town,” Sarah recalls.

“Completely deserted. Most of the buildings on lower Dexter were derelict and empty.”

Moved and unsettled by the experience, she and Mark returned to Manhattan, where they started discussing the possibility of repairing and transforming Dexter Avenue’s physical erosion into something “better.” Being entrepreneurs and builders, it didn’t take them long to act. In 2013, they signed a rehabilitation agreement with the city of Montgomery, purchased several boarded-up buildings on lower Dexter, and established Montgomery Builds, a development effort aimed at rebuilding “culturally relevant historic spaces” downtown. (“My life continues to be a circuitous path,” Sarah notes wryly.)

Then they went forth into their new community… and listened.

“From the outset,” says Sarah, “we asked the local community—the city and the local historical society—where we should start, and they all expressed the fact that the Kress Building was a place that everyone in the community had an experience with. There was eager enthusiasm for us to begin with restoring it.”

In so many ways, it was a natural choice. With its imposing, art-deco exterior, the Kress department store was the iconic anchor of Dexter Avenue during its existence from 1898 to 1981, retaining its grandeur even during recent years of urban decay. Locals would don their “Sunday best” to shop there, and the store doors opened one side onto Dexter—traditionally a “white” street—and the other side onto Monroe Street, the epicenter of black culture and commerce during its heyday. It was truly, says Sarah, “a bridge” between populations of the town.

Everyone of a certain age remembered Kress. It was the logical place to begin physical and metaphorical restoration.

There was a lot of pride on Monroe Street. A lot of pride.

But it wasn’t easy. Kress “was probably the most complicated and challenging of all our projects because it’s so old, and holds historic and emotional weight with the local community,” says Sarah. In keeping with her background in sustainability, the couple took care to maximize energy efficiency and use environmentally safe products. They also worked to preserve the original structure wherever possible, and to use original or reclaimed materials. In 2014, after Alabama’s oldest theater, Monroe Street’s Webber Theater, collapsed, the Bullers bought it for a dollar, deconstructed it, and had the structural beams re-formed into flooring. Fittingly, wood from the theater where Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth, performed, now undergirds Kress, an edifice rebuilt on hope.

Along with restoring an architectural treasure, the Bullers were concerned with building something more intangible: community.

“We decided early on to use some of our public spaces as platforms for arts and conversations because we believe the arts foster community and culture,” says Sarah. “The arts also provide a vehicle for addressing complex issues.”

Several years later, Kress on Dexter opened its doors in April 2018 with the “Remembering Monroe Project”—a four-day “hands-on art and storytelling event” celebrating Monroe Street’s history. Since then, local businesses have set up shop on the first two floors, with one retail tenant, a coffee shop, named Food & Wine’s “Best Coffee in Alabama” in 2018. The work and event spaces on the third floor are humming, and the fourth- and fifth-floor apartments (added onto the original building) are occupied. An art gallery features a rotation of local artists’ shows such as Fe(male), a visual-arts exploration of women’s experience and perspective.

Community members attend ongoing “Conversations at Kress,” where recently, facilitators used two plays about the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church as a springboard for a town hall-style discussion about the civil rights movement.

“The street is coming to life,” Sarah says. “People are beginning to return downtown.”

I truly believe that the first two gigantic events that happened in the city, the Civil War and Civil Rights Movement, were preludes to the conversation that is upon us now, and I think that conversation is putting love into action.

She has not shied away from the darker aspects of this experience. Early on, fumbling through the building’s lightless, ruined interior, the Bullers discovered two marble slabs leaning against a wall, one engraved “white,” the other “colored”: the building’s original, segregated water fountains. After talking with community members, the Bullers decided to illuminate, rather than bury, the ugliness. Accompanied by explanatory text, the slabs now stand at the Monroe Street entrance, reminding visitors of the repugnant side of Montgomery’s, and America’s, past.

Stigma hurts.

It’s a “Storybooth,” and if the marble slabs memorialize a time of brutal silencing, the Storybooth invites people to raise their voices and make them heard. Already, hundreds of visitors have entered the structure, picked up the phone, and recorded a story, memory, or hope for Storybooth archives.

The bricks, which were made and laid by enslaved women, came from the demolished Webber Theater, and were donated by the Bullers. During their first nine months, nearly 300,000 people visited the sites—a sign, Sarah hopes, of growing public willingness to shine light on the toxic aspects of our past.

I’ve met so many incredible young people who have real dreams for where they want to take Montgomery.

They seem to have the creativity and the gumption and the wherewithal to do it, which makes me really excited to see in the coming decades where the city goes.

atching Dawn Emerson draw and paint is like watching someone dance,” explains visual arts teacher Sara Macaulay.

After traveling to Dawn’s Oregon studio last summer on a “learning adventure,” Sara and Julia Wells Harrison ’77 invited the groundbreaking artist to Winsor.

In October, she simply wowed students in a day of energetic demos. After one open session for anyone interested, she did an advanced demo for AP Studio Art, Portfolio and Draw-

ing and Painting classes and a third session with Class IV. Inspired by the visit, student artists have applied her lessons in breathtaking works of their own, ranging from clayboard and sumi ink portraits to large-scale animals on Evolon in mixed media.

Market Opportunity Raquel Melo ’88 takes the lead in diversifying the world of marketing and advertising.

I

t’s 2017 and Americans are taking to the streets to protest police brutality and government overreach in numbers not seen for a generation. A corporate giant notices, but fails to grasp the zeitgeist.

In a now infamous ad, a conspicuously multicultural crowd peacefully assembles under the watchful eyes of a line of men in uniform. Kendall Jenner, a white model and reality star, dissolves the tension, offering a fizzy soft drink to a stone-faced officer. He takes a sip and cracks a grin; a woman wearing a Muslim hijab does the same. The crowd cheers, and...dissipates.

“If only Daddy had known about the power of Pepsi,” Bernice King tweeted out with a photo of her father, Martin Luther King Jr., being roughed up by police during a peaceful protest. Amidst a storm of controversy, Pepsi pulled its three-minute, $2 million ad.

“Was anyone on that advertising team of a diverse background?” Raquel Melo ’88 wonders. “I’m not saying only a person from a diverse background could have caught the error—but the likelihood would have been higher.”

For Raquel, the Pepsi ad was only one very high profile example of a problem she’d seen over and over in her two decades as a marketing executive for major food corporations. Currently a senior innovation lead for Kemps, a major dairy

30 WINSOR SPRING 2019

manufacturer in Minneapolis, she has held marketing leadership positions at Land O’Lakes and General Mills.

“Golden grahams and butter—it’s not only white suburban moms in Minnesota who serve those to their kids,” says Raquel, whose parents moved to the United States from the Dominican Republic when she was small. “As a person of color, I was struck that in the world of marketing and advertising, the industry itself is not reflective of the consumers I am looking to reach. But I didn’t see any on-ramps for people to get into the industry.”

That’s why, when her then-employer Land O’Lakes gave a grant to a social justice start-up called the BrandLab, Raquel became intrigued. Dedicated to diversifying the marketing and advertising workforce, the BrandLab originally provided high school students from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds with an opportunity to gain exposure to the industry through summer internships. As a volunteer for the nonprofit, she helped it develop a more advanced, more hands-on internship program for college students.

“Many of the kids are either first-generation Americans or the first generation in their family to go to college,” says Raquel, who stepped up to chair the BrandLab’s Board of Directors last year. “These internships

expose kids to a world they didn’t even know existed.”

By now, the BrandLab’s first crop of high school interns are old enough to enter the job market, and Raquel says a recent survey of the marketing and advertising industry in the Twin Cities showed some demographic change. “Is it solely because of BrandLab? No, but we are seeing change, we are starting to see some movement,” she says.

The key to the program’s success, she says, is the long-term mentoring it offers—the same kind of support she says she felt at Winsor. “As a very disadvantaged young person, Winsor was for me an amazing experience,” she recalls.

“I had culture shock—the young girl who walked in the door was definitely a deer in the headlights. But people held my hand.”

Now, Raquel is the one offering out her hand to the next generation.

She’s looking to extend the BrandLab’s success beyond the Twin Cities. Kansas City, Atlanta, Boston, London—all these cities look like fertile opportunities to her.

“It’s not just about my market,” she says. “If we can replicate it in one market, why not ignite it everywhere? Why not dream big?”

A Class of Firsts “Small but mighty,” the Class of 1994 has certainly left its mark.

A quarter century since graduation, the first seniors to paint their homeroom look back at what Winsor taught them about taking the lead.

ack in 1886, when a 26-yearold Mary Pickard Winsor opened a new school near the Public Garden for eight young girls, horses and buggies ruled the roads, the first glasses of a carbonated beverage called Coca-Cola were sipped, and her pioneering idea that girls deserved a rigorous education was a radical notion. Oh, how things have changed. One thing that endures, however—more than 13 decades later—is her hope that every Winsor girl would be self-supporting as well as “competent, responsible, and generous-minded.” And by instilling these qualities in the academic and social fabric at Win-

sor, she strove to teach her students to be leaders.

Like the 1880s, when change upon change was unfolding and unfurling in the world, the 1990s were a time of change when cultural feminism made significant strides. Orchestrated by then director Carolyn McClintock Peter, the late and much beloved math teacher and assistant director Diane Bezan, and English teacher Travis Brownley, Winsor introduced its inaugural Leadership Initiative with the Class of 1994 as its pilot class. It was the right class at the right time.

“There were only 44 of us…we were small, but mighty!” says Elizabeth Finn

Payne ’94, who now works as a controller at Akoya Biosciences in Hopkinton, Mass. “Every Winsor class is special, but what stands out about ours is that it was and is one of natural leaders. I think what made us innate leaders was the fact that we were able to be our authentic selves. Sure, we’d tease each other—I am still remembered for wearing red sweatpants, for efficiency’s sake, almost every day of my high school years—but we respected each other as a group of strong and distinctive individuals.”

“In many ways,” says Elizabeth, “we were the perfect class to take on the leadership initiative, which over the years has grown into so much more.”

“I remember our class attending a workshop where we had speakers and discussions around what it means to be a leader, the qualities of a leader no matter her style, and the importance of female leadership at Winsor and in the world,” says Mary Gallagher ’94, who is COO of Massachusetts Division of Banks. “During the workshop, we generated this idea to paint our senior homeroom as a bonding, team-building experience. Who knew what a cherished tradition it would become?”

Using primary colors, the class painted the wall above the main blackboard with handprints from each of its 44 members. “It was simple, but each hand was connected thumb to pinkie, pinkie to thumb to show the power of individuality and that of a cohesive group,” Mary notes. “We were individuals bound together” Looking back, “the painting project was a class metaphor for where we would be headed that year,” she reflects. “We would build upon these project skills as we went on to captain teams and chair clubs, working both as leaders and teammates.” Today, many of the classmates are formidable leaders in their communities and career fields.

When 25th reunion rep Carrie Jenks ’94 thinks back to what they learned as a class, she sees lessons that have stayed with her ever since. “I think what resonated for me most was the notion that to be a strong leader, you have to listen to the people you work with in order to reach a common goal,” she says.

“People want to be heard; there has to be buy in and group ownership. I use those strategies today,” says Carrie, an attorney and consultant working in environmental law and corporate strategy.

Knowing that Winsor gave them a terrific opportunity to lead, they

From their class brainstorming sessions, the Class of 1994 Leadership Prize was born, awarded each year to a senior committed to the value of female leadership for future generations.

Today, the leadership retreat for Class VII has become a Winsor fixture, bringing each class of rising seniors together in their junior spring to consider their own legacy. In much the same way as the 1994 classmates first did, classes think about what it means to be school leaders. As part of the retreat, they also decide on a homeroom theme.

From its simple beginnings, the tradition of painting the senior homeroom has not only endured but, in fact, taken on a life of its own. Each summer, the

outgoing and incoming senior classes meet to paint over the existing work, priming it in white for its next iteration. In August—a bonding retreat of sorts—the senior class comes together, grabbing brushes and bringing their collective theme to fruition on their classroom’s walls. Then, on the opening day of school, there is a big, schoolwide “reveal”—an unveiling of the class’s “spirit.” Classes have drawn inspiration from countless sources, from Pop Art to Monet to Dr. Seuss.

This year, the Class of 2019 theme, Time Travel, takes us “Back to the Future” (from the 1985 film).

thought we had a cohesive class to begin with, but being given the chance to do something ‘first’ at Winsor—a school with so many years of history— was special,” says the class’s vice president, now a general partner at Victress Capital, a venture capital fund focused on early-stage businesses with diverse management teams.

“Winsor absolutely shaped who I am today,” Suzanne reflects. “From Class III to VIII, I always felt free to develop and share my own opinion, always felt secure enough to take risks, and always believed we could do anything with our lives if we worked hard for it. I wouldn’t realize until later how important that foundation is for girls to have; at Winsor, it was the norm, but once we left Winsor, I realized girls aren’t often

receiving those same messages throughout their lives. We were propelled from Winsor with a self-confidence and a sense of purpose, and it is something I have been thankful for my entire life.”

Returning after 25 years to celebrate their reunion, the Class of 1994—like every returning class—will no doubt revel in their memories and stories, their jokes, their quirks, their struggles, and their joys. Perhaps, they will also feel great pride and gratitude as the pioneering class in terms of the more formal ways that Winsor classes now take structured time to think together about what it means to be role models and leaders while at Winsor and beyond in their lives.

So many times, I think about the importance of being and becoming what Miss Winsor hoped— ‘competent, responsible, and generous-minded.’ Celebrating our 25th reunion, I can’t help but think about what Winsor gave to me and to my class, but also what we left as our mark—as individuals and as a group.”

It’s ALL Material Science World-renowned nanoscientist Kristin Bennett ’85 returned to campus to speak with students in Rachel Bricklin’s STEMinar elective.

After over a decade at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and years spearheading projects with such agencies as the Department of Energy, Department of Defense and the National Science Foundation, Kristin remains passionate about scientific discovery. Using examples from everyday life, she underscored the connectivity in all things, and how this understanding, combined with a desire to make a difference in the world, has helped her forge her own path in her work—and in her life.

When she isn’t making groundbreaking discoveries, or advocating for STEM education and workforce development, she is breaking new ground atop summits in the Himalayas, an ice axe in hand (frostbite from this year’s trek made an intriguing addition to the conversation of nature and science!)

Today, Kristin is the founding president and CEO of KB Science, LLC, a consulting firm with the mission to merge basic and applied research, science, and technology for a more secure and peaceful world. Having turned her love of rocks, outdoor adventures, problem solving and saving the world into her life’s work, she is enjoying helping others “tell their science story”-- thanks in part to the writing skills she learned at Winsor.

Her advice for students pursuing any endeavor: “Follow your passion and you will be wealthy in all the ways you need.”

Believe in Yourself and Your Work In September, the Upper School Book Club and Creative Writing Club co-hosted a Q&A with Blair Hurley ’05.

Touring in support of her debut novel, The Devoted, Blair sat down with aspiring young writers and shared invaluable words of wisdom. Of first drafts she said, “It’s going to be messy...No one gets it right in the first draft. The process of revision is as important as getting the first draft done.”

As for rejection? “It is just a part of the writing life. In the same way athletes learn to love the pain, you learn to love the pain. It makes you stronger.” And above all else, “persistence is the key...and you need to believe in yourself and your work.”

Alum Sheds Light on Women in the Military In a special assembly honoring Veterans Day, Winsor welcomed distinguished alumna Professor Elizabeth Samet ’87.

A civilian with a B.A. from Harvard and Ph.D. from Yale, Professor Samet has taught English literature at West Point for over two decades, and offers a unique perspective on the complexities involved in institutional change, and the pioneers that persist in the face of obstacles.

Sharing her extensive knowledge of the military and the evolution of women’s roles and contributions—particularly within the context of the complex social and legal codes—her examples highlighted how women continue to demonstrate that honor, courage, and valor are gender neutral.

She is also the author of numerous books, essays, and articles on leadership and the military. See page 46 for her most recent book.

Nancy Greep I continue to work part-time as an internist in community clinics treating the indigent. I work in LA two days and then go to Santa Barbara, where we have a second home overlooking the Pacific Ocean. My 38 year-old

son, a robotic surgeon in Santa Barbara, is currently living with his wife and two children (girls ages 2 and 7) in our Santa Barbara house because they bought a house which is still being built. We went from peace to chaos with furniture covered with blankets serving as little houses where the girls play. In September I went to NYC with the entire family to celebrate my husband’s aunt’s 100th B-day and stayed with Ceci Moore ’62. Such a treat to see her after a long delay. Fun talking about old memories.

Sarah Cannon Holden Practice of labor arbitration continues to be most interesting. I’m in my eighth year as Town Moderator. Traveled to Cuba last year. Two children and four grandchildren in California.

One child and three grandchildren in Vermont. All doing well. Larry and I are not interested in full retirement yet. We love to ski and hike. I try to remain positive in an upside down crazy political world. I fear for Mother Earth. May women take over in Congress! And elsewhere.

I was too busy to even miss working as a naturalist/tour guide, which Jon and I have done for the last 7 summers. time yet). It was such a pleasure to be with funny, intelligent, interesting women who share a long history and feeling of trust, respect and affection.

Rebecca Tilney My dog and I drove from LA to Atlanta in July and spent four months in Atlanta with one of my college roommates. Fantastic to spend time in a new place and also see two of my sisters (Louise Moore ’80 and Victoria McDonough ’83) over the summer. It was great to get out of LA and get some needed perspective!

Alexandra McPeek I had a great time seeing everyone at our reunion this past May. Thank you again to Liz Tillman ’83 for putting together the updated version of our yearbook! Life is very busy. I am a litigator handling complex, multiparty cases which frequently involve construction defect claims or product liability claims. I am fortunate to have practiced with a talented group of lawyers for almost twenty years.

For several decades, I have enjoyed being involved at the Union Club of Boston, including as a member of the Board of Governors, the Nominating Committee and the House Committee. In addition, I am a director of the Seven and Eight Park Street Foundation. I have also served as a member of the Vestry at the Church of the Redeemer in Chestnut Hill and as Head of the Altar Guild there.

I have enjoyed working with many thoughtful and caring individuals to support these great Boston institutions. For relaxation, I love to travel and sail off the Massachusetts coast.

Cathy Guttentag Happy to have our house back to normal after many months of reconstruction from Hurricane Harvey last year! Our house and car flooded, and I learned more about flood recovery than anyone really wants to know. But it’s finally done, and we celebrated in November with an Open House party to thank friends and colleagues who supported us during the process! My daughter Leah Mei turned 15 in November, started high school this year, and is doing great. Hope to come up to Boston for Reunion this spring.

Barrie Rosenberg Prinz About 3 years ago, we left NYC (after 20 years!) for the tiny village of Lakeville, CT, and have been happily living the country life since then. I still work as an in-house lawyer for Deloitte, and became a certified yoga teacher in 2017 (I teach a vinyasa class once a week in a local studio, which is a blast). Recently took a 10-day trip with my husband, Barrett, to trek Machu Picchu for our 15th anniversary, which was a great adventure. Mariama White-Hammond When I was at Winsor I was adamant that I would never become a minister like my parents. I graduated from BU School of Theology and was ordained in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Spring 2017. In October 2018 I became the founding pastor of a multiracial, multiclass congregation, New Roots AME Church in Dorchester, MA. I guess God got the last word on this one. Lol.

NEWSMAKER: EMILY GEANACOPOULOS COUGHLIN ’80

Litigation Trailblazer For over 30 years, Emily Geanacopulos Coughlin ’80 has been a trailblazer in the field of civil litigation. A cofounder of the firm Coughlin Betke LLP, her dedication, visionary leadership, and success have earned her national recognition.

In 2020, Emily will assume the presidency of DRI, The Voice of the Defense Bar, the premier national organization of civil defense lawyers. “As only the fourth woman to hold the role in the DRI’s nearly 60-year history, I am proud to have the incredible and humbling privilege of working to improve the civil justice system and to act as a model for women trial lawyers.”

A distinguished member of numerous associations, Emily continues to raise the bar for lawyers everywhere. In 2018, Lawyers Weekly named her one of The Top Women of Law, an award honoring female pioneers, educators, trailblazers, and role models. And in 2017, the Massachusetts Defense Lawyers Association (MassDLA) named her the Massachusetts Defense Lawyer of the Year.

Citing the decline in number of trial cases, the urgent need for diversity in law firms, and constantly advancing technology as factors reshaping the practice of law, Emily’s advice for future law professionals: Embrace change. “Tomorrow’s trial lawyers will need to be educated in constantly changing subject matter, and they will need to have the agility to adapt.”

Reflecting on her journey that began as a young girl just learning to speak English in elementary school, Emily is grateful. “As a first generation American, I credit Winsor for not only laying the foundation of a stellar education, but also helping me build an inner confidence that I could achieve any goal I set my mind to.”

ALUMNAE PROFILE: ANNE EMERSON ’64, P’88, ’91, JOSEPHINE BURR ’88, HANNAH BURR ’91

A Family of Artists Artists are the ambassadors of possibility. They are the ponderers, the change makers.

Starting at different times in their lives, using different media, and approaching their art from distinct perspectives, Anne Emerson ’64, Josephine (Jody) Burr ’88, and Hannah Burr ’91—mother and sisters—are each working artists.

They didn’t all start with seeing themselves in that light. At Winsor, Jody reveled in music and theater.

Anne thought of herself as a word person. It was Hannah who was the “artist,” always drawing and making things, adopting that sense of self from a young age. “All of the arts provide a different language, a different way of being in the world,” says Jody. “Being able to communicate in a different language is incredibly meaningful; the power of that language can reach people and transform them.”

As it turns out, for each of these three Winsor women, the visual arts became their language of choice.

“In Class VIII at Winsor, I was voted ‘most likely to figure it all out,’” laughs Hannah. “I’m not sure artists figure everything out, but I do think we swim against the current. We make change from the outside in, from the margins to the mainstream.”

Hannah calls herself a contemporary artist but those two words can barely contain all of what emerges from her work. Hannah “magnifies how experience folds and refolds in on itself.” Her work includes watercolors, sculptures, small piles of bound papers as metaphor, installations, and book projects. She also conducts workshops that combine participatory art practice, meditation, writing, movement, and sound.

“However people participate in my art,” she adds, “I want them to stop

in their tracks and surrender their minds for a moment, contemplate a memory or experience from a new perspective, or simply use my art as a reflecting pool for themselves and the world around them.”

For many artists, their act of making art often starts with a question.

“Why am I here? How does this life fit in with the whole universe? These questions are what drive me to make the work that I do,” reflects Jody. “I think we respond to art, as humans, because we all have these questions.”

A ceramicist and draftsmen, Jody is interested in “probing at unnoticed space” and contemplating the “shifting terrain of presence, memory, and relationship.” There is a sense of tradition and timelessness in her pieces—ceramic tangles and knots, stacks of layered shapes, bottomless pots where light filters through a pattern of holes. “I create in bodies

of work, pieces in conversation with each other, evoking a sense of time passing,” she says.

Over the years, while juggling her art, her family, and her work with her husband in managing their game publishing business, Anomia Press, Jody has maintained a career in nonprofit program development—whether working on grants for public art projects or helping to create a neighborhood identity through urban renewal.

“Most people want order; they want everything to have a name and fit into a box,” reflects Jody. Artists, in her mind, have different desires.

“Artists embrace ambiguity,” she says.

“Bringing that openness to a community can be very powerful.”

“At Winsor, we were taught to be engaged as citizens, to ask difficult questions,” she notes. “I aspire to those high expectations as an artist and a citizen, and I understand the

importance of giving back to the larger world around me.”

For Anne, the impulse to try making art didn’t emerge until after she retired. In the span of her engaging career, she served in lead roles at Harvard, the Bostonian Society, the Old State House Museum, and the Boston Museum Project. “I figured out early on that I can do anything if I studied and stuck to it,” she says. As Anne turned her focus to art, “I studied with some good people, working in watercolor and oils, then worked with a pastel artist and never touched anything else again.”

Anne’s paintings are of people, things, and places she loves. Many are painted in East Penobscot Bay in Maine, where her extended family has owned a grouping of small cabins for more than a century. In her artist’s statement, she writes, “The act of painting is a meditation for me, awak-

ening me to ‘all this joy and beauty,’ in the words of my grandmother’s favorite prayer. In a way my painting is also an act of longing.”

What Anne likes most about it is seeing what takes shape on her easel.

“The painting emerges from this terrible mess,” she says. “It’s so exciting, like watching the coming of dawn.”

When they gather as a family these days, the three artists like to take walks together, “visually sifting” as Hannah calls their act of letting the world around them seep in. As Anne explains, art offers “a way to see the world differently.” Circling back to daughter Jody’s words, it also provides “a different way of being in the world.”

Through their art, they each bring others along with them on a path to deeper understanding.

on to study in college. As my work now focusses on the assessment and cleanup of contaminated properties, I often recall the paper I wrote on the Superfund Regulation for Expository Writing with Ms. Skeele.

Winsor is a place where I learned to take calculated risks, trust in myself, and communicate effectively - all skills that have been critical to this recent transition. I hope you all are doing well.

I left my management consulting role at Bain & Co to join human-grade pet food startup Ollie in operations and then married my now husband after 6+ years together. Amanda Duffy I graduated from Winsor in 2005, and have since carried Winsor in my heart. In 2009, I graduated from Brown where I studied Neuroscience. I also met my wonderful husband, Max Winograd, and our life has been full of amazing moments. After college, I worked as a research assistant at MGH, where I studied deep brain stimulation as a treatment for patients with OCD. This past May, I completed my PhD in Neuroscience at Brown where I identified early abnormalities in mouse models of ALS and frontotemporal dementia. As a post-doctoral scientist, I will be conducting clinical research related to different

forms of brain damage. We are moving back to Boston this summer—I’ll always be a Boston girl at heart! I will also be the Maid of Honor in my sister’s (Emily Duffy ’10) wedding this fall in Chatham, Cape Cod. Excited to be starting this next chapter!

Danielle Johns Hi everyone! In the summer of 2018 I did a big move and relocated from sunshine to sunshine, specifically moving from South Florida (Miami/Fort Lauderdale area) to San Francisco, for a change of pace and to start a new job in a new field

for me, analytics, with Walmart eCommerce. Since the move, I’ve been exploring the Bay area and also southern California, trying to get to know more local areas after having focused more on the international for a while. I had never been to San Francisco before, so it has been a great new adventure. There is always something going on and the food is amazing! Not to mention all the different languages spoken here. I have recently begun studying Italian and am planning to resume Arabic and Mandarin soon. If you are in the area and want to connect, just send me a note!

Building Excitement for Global Forum 2019 On Thursday, Nov. 1, Community Curriculum Day marked the official start of Winsor’s 2019 Global Forum, “Sick Days: Disease and Its Role in Human Society.”

A riveting presentation by Natasha Hochberg ’92, M.D., M.P.H. offered a closer look at diseases, the growing threats they pose, and the urgency behind the quest for solutions. Inspiring students as they pondered their Global Forum mission, Dr. Hochberg also spoke on campus in the Spring of 2017, specifically about malaria as an expert on the Martina Brandegee Lawrence ’25 Forum panel.

The day was an opportunity for students to gather information, share ideas and prepare for the five days in January when they would immerse themselves in the study of disease in order to uncover possible solutions to some of the most pressing global health challenges.

Emily Duffy Following my graduation from Tufts a few years ago, I started working at Boston Private - first in Residential Lending for a couple years and then chose to pursue Business Development at Boston Private Wealth.

I feel my “inner Winsor” pride everyday, as I actively participate in events that advocate for women in the business world and have a role as a board member of Boston Private’s Women’s Connection group. It has been a truly exciting time, as I will be marrying my fianceé, Daniel

Foster, on October 13, 2018 at the Wequassett Resort in Chatham, Cape Cod. Although Daniel and I “re-met” each other at Tufts, we first met at the age of 2 when we both attended the Chestnut Hill School together, prior to Winsor (for me) and Dexter (for him)! I hope everyone is doing well, and I look forward to visiting soon!

Breaking Barriers in Sports Comedy A senior writer at Sports Illustrated with a keen sense of humor, Charlotte Wilder is breaking new ground as host of “The Wilder Project” on SI TV. Given the reigns to the new weekly sports comedy series, Charlotte writes each episode herself, which includes time to “riff with” then interview a guest, followed by a late-night style monologue.

Bringing a fresh and humorous perspective to topics that everyone can relate to, Charlotte is able to appeal to an audience broader than avid sports fans—something that really drives her work. “I try to look at the sports world through a different lens—what’s weird, what’s funny, what’s ridiculous about it?

And when that resonates with someone or makes them laugh, I feel like I’ve actually done my job.”

She is also committed to helping other women find their way into the traditionally male-dominated space of sports media, drawing acclaim for responding directly to tweets and emails from women seeking professional guidance. “There have been many times when I’ve been the only woman in the room, and I’ve vowed to make it a part of my mission to bring other women in there with me whenever I can.”

“My main advice—besides saying yes to every opportunity and giving 1000% in everything you do—is to network like crazy,” she says. “This is an extremely tough industry to break into no matter who you are... but if you’re talented, determined, and have the drive, there’s no reason you can’t do it.”

Bailey Scott On December 28, 2018, I married James Breitmeyer at Emmanuel Church in Boston. Several members of the Winsor class of 2012 attended the event. James is originally from the Boston area and is currently working in a start-up in New York City. I am in my second year of a doctoral program in the Department of Politics at Princeton University. I am focusing my research on security studies, with a particular emphasis on U.S.-Russian relations.

Mary Atkinson I think I’ve spent too much of my life looking for meaning or trying to create meaning. Now in my late (!) sixties I’m finally going to relax (yeah

right) with the realization that it all comes down to what it’s always come down to: family, friends, good health, and finding things to do that I love.

I have a great family—husband Steve Lewis whom I met at Antioch College, kids Amanda and Adam, and granddaughter Julia. I’ve enjoyed many friendships along the way but the closest ones are still with my Winsor friends. My health is good.

I discovered long-distance walking in Scotland six years ago and take a 70-90 mile walk there each summer.

I’ve been a teacher, educational consultant, freelance writer, and am the author of children’s books Owl

I live in Portland and Stoneham, Maine, I take painting classes, canvass for Democrats, and hang out with my granddaughter. All in all, a very good life!

Averill Babson I am looking forward to our 50th to catch up with everyone. We have had three weddings in the space of 18 months, and one baby named Henry born in Montreal to Antonia on 11/17/18. The third wedding for Juliet will be in Atlanta in December.

Other events include a solo visit to see our eldest, Olivia, where she lives near Casablanca, and flying out to a Stanford class reunion (and meeting Joan Mansfield there) after visiting old friends out west this October.

In NYC, I am active in environmental issues and human rights, including the Children’s Rights Division of Human Rights Watch and the latest issue right here—treatment of juveniles in the justice system, and more recently, of minors and families at the US borders. Still living in CT some of the time, as Greg still commutes, and in NH for most of summer.

Louise Bergfelt I was an exchange student at Winsor School in 1968-69. After that I went back to Gothenburg and finished up high school. In 1971 I studied art history, but I also went to Paris and visited Averill Babson ’69 and Andy Browne ’69 who studied in Paris that year. In 1972 I went to Medical school and did my internship 1977-79. I got married in 1977 and had my first child, a son, Arvid, in 1979 and a second son Oscar in ’81. After one year of gynecology I switched and did my residency in Dermatology. In 1985-86 the family was in Houston Texas, where my husband did a postdoctoral fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. I started research at M.D. Anderson, Dept. of Immunology with Dr. Margaret Kripke. I did studies on Langerhans cells, an immunoregulatory cell in the skin. I finished my dissertation in 1993. After that I was head of Dept. of Dermatology in Borås, east of Gothenburg, for seven years.

Since then I have been in private practice in Gothenburg. I have two grandchildren, 6 and 2 years old, who live in Finland where my oldest son is married. My youngest son lives in Munich, Germany.

Martha Aladjem Bloomfield During our golden years and challenging times, I want to thank our English teachers! At 13, I struggled to organize my thoughts and write succinctly, learned what “circumlocutious” meant and decided then to become a writer. Since retiring from the Michigan Historical Museum in 2010, I gather oral histories from immigrants and homeless people to write books to dissipate stereotyp-

ing/prejudice at least in some small way. I provide people opportunities to discover and share their stories and family photographs/documents/ artifacts and put them into a social/ historical context. I love traveling in this inner, peaceful world. When I taught writing to adult professionals and homeless people, I acknowledged my early challenges and gratitude to my mentors. I love to travel overseas and in rural areas of the US. I love to hike, swim, and ride ‘Perky’ an elderly, spunky Arabian horse who helps my inner confidence. I tolerate my exercise class! I am happy that I have my Winsor friends for more than fifty years, my husband, Alan, my sons Avi and Simi, and Simi’s wife, my daughter-in-law, Reina, and of course, my golden retriever, Sophia. Divorced by 30, 3 sons later. Went to graduate school in clinical psychology. After 18 years of exile in Erie, returned to Boston to complete my doctorate at Beth Israel Deaconess. I have loved doing psychoanalytic psychotherapy and teaching trainees in psychology and psychiatry. Married my high school boyfriend at 48 (Yes, really) Had a 12year run, but sadly, the marriage died.

Closed my practice in Providence last year to be closer to my 90-year old mother. No clinical practice at the moment but am writing a book on the

silencing of abuse. My sons: Jeffrey, is a psychologist, Danny, a music therapist, and David does legal work for our family business. On balance, while I’ve taken my hits, I’m healthy, stoked about writing this book, and grateful to still have my Winsor friends.

Gale Brewer Since 2014, as the 27th Manhattan Borough President, I have reformed deed restrictions, added caregivers to the anti-discrimination law, removed criminal history from employment applications, and required numbers on buildings. I spearheaded planning at South Street Seaport, in East Midtown, and in the Garment Center. I’ve served 12 years on the City Council, first chairing Technology, then Government Operations. I passed paid sick leave, required online City data, and protected domestic workers. I was Chief of Staff to Councilmember Messinger, Deputy Public Advocate, Director of City’s Federal Office, and ED of Commission on the Status of Women; I was Manager for Nonprofits Project at CUNY, and worked for Telesis Corporation building housing.

I was Scheduling Director in 1975 for Lt. Governor Mary Anne Krupsak, first woman to win statewide. Previously, I chaired NYS National Women’s Political Caucus. I also worked for Parks in Lindsay administration. Supporting me today are these friends; I also thank Winsor classmates. I got my MPA from Harvard’s Kennedy School and undergraduate at Columbia University and Bennington College. I now teach at Hunter College; taught at Barnard, Baruch, Brooklyn, Queens Colleges. My husband, Cal Snyder, and I have a son, Mo, and have raised foster children.

Annette Browne After graduating from Boston University’s School of Fine Arts, lived in France before returning to attend Skowhegan (an artist residency in Maine) in 1976. Returned to Boston and had a number of diverse occupations ranging from waitress to welder. Eventually ‘graduated’ to working at Planned Parenthood and NE Foundation for the Arts before getting married in 1989 and moving to southern Maine. For ten years we had an artistic sandblasting business of rocks and glass that we marketed throughout NE. My husband’s work took us to FL in 1998. I’ve just finished up 18 years with the United Arts Council and now am full time in my studio. No formal gallery representation, but I’ve shown throughout New England and Florida in a variety of gallery and museum shows. No children, but 3 cats and a much smaller orchid collection than I had before the last hurricane!

Laura Simons Gray My husband of 17 years ran off with a younger woman when my son, Alex, was 12 and my daughter, Anna, was 10. It turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to me and my kids. I miraculously met and married Roger Gray 17 years ago and he is the love of my life and respected and appreciated by my children, now 32 and 30 years old. My professional life of social work, primarily focused at Boston Children’s Hospital, has been rewarding. I worked for many years with adults and children with hemophilia and published two books for the benefit of the hemophilia community called “The Gift of Experience I and II”. The books are used

for training professionals and supporting families dealing with the disease.

Roger has brought sailing into my life.

We spent the majority of two years sailing in the Bahamas and Caribbean with our cat, Scuppers. And finally of note, my best friends are still my Winsor friends. How wonderful is that?

Susan Hoeffel My career as a pediatric nurse began in 1970 and spanned 38 years. It was a passionate journey leading me from Boston Children’s Hospital to the hills of Appalachia, the Colorado Rockies and on to the lush land of Oregon. There I met the love of my life, Ruth McDonald. Happily, we shared the gift of working together as Ruth pursued her professorship in Pediatric pulmonary medicine. We have been in Sacramento over 32 years and upon my retirement became a licensed county foster home. We have loved nine babies placed in our care thus far. Due to ongoing involvement with these little ones, our plan to retire to our Oregon home has been placed on hold. We enjoy our time together immensely and love our treks especially to the east coast seeing old friends and family. Children, friends, family, dogs, cats, garden and exercise fill our days and our hearts! I wish everyone much goodness in their days and for the years ahead.

Edith Homans I moved to Santa Fe, NM after graduating from Hampshire College. Although I briefly practiced art therapy, my work-life has been mainly dedicated with all its ups and downs to making art—large abstract sculpture and, currently, painting. I’ve also enjoyed teaching art to children

in an afterschool program. Since 1980 I’ve built a life with Andrew Davis—a poet/woodworker/artist/ jack-of-all trades introduced to me by my cousin Katy Homans when she visited me in NM. We raised our three children between Santa Fe and a village on the northern coast of Spain where, wanting them to see the world from another perspective than that of the USA, we spent every third year of their growing up. The “kids” (now 23, 30 and 33) are all bi-lingual.

Each has incorporated something of their “Spanish” selves into their lives. Living in a foreign country has bonded us as a family. Caring for aging parents and dealing with our own aging takes time, and in the midst of it all we continue to go on mountain adventures—a few years ago to the “end of the world” just north of Cape Horn and last month a five-day trek in the high Pyrenees.

Hallie Stephenson Lee Since our 25th dominant roles in the last 25 years have been motherhood, partnership with my husband, community volunteer, caregiver for my elderly parents and tennis team member. The bright lights are our kids—young, strong, talented 24-year-old adults who keep us young and who are navigating the challenges of modern day national and international society. Our daughter, Bailey after graduating from Wellesley (my alma mater), is living in her apartment in Cambridge and is working as a Product Data Analyst for Car Gurus (a tech startup which went public one year ago) in Cambridge.

Our son, Steve is in his senior year at Connecticut College, and his goal is to graduate from college with a Sociology Major and work in the field of Environmental Sustainability management. Dave and I enjoy sailing our

Catalina 320 in our spare time in the summer time out of West Falmouth (MA) Harbor. In the winter months we enjoy cross country skiing, and I still enjoy downhill skiing in Vermont.

We walk as much as we can, using our Fitbits to motivate us and do strength training which has enabled us to maintain a certain level of fitness.

Caroline Morse Leverette Oh, my. 25 years in 200 words or less.

Still married. Still in Texas. Courtney is 30. Lives in NYC, working in the fashion industry with two years in Paris after college and stints with Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors. Alec is 29 and after 5 years in the navy, training on F-18’s has had to give that up because of eye issues. He’s back to his first love, rockets. He is presently in Seattle working for Blue Origen designing components for rocket engines. Steve is consulting in

the oil business and stays very busy. I have been spending time flying back and forth to Florida to keep tabs on my mother. I had to put her in memory care last year. I stay involved with the Awty International School in Houston, where the kids went to school. I volunteer with Meals on Wheels. I am getting to spend more time designing and making quilts, all of which I have given away. Health has its ups and downs recently, which comes with all those passing years.

I’m glad I don’t have to cope with snow and ice. I like the heat in Texas.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in May. Mary Lowell Where has the time gone... I have conflicting memories of Winsor; however, the education I was privileged to receive and the friends I made and kept have abiding value. Escaping Boston for the University of Arizona and experiencing culture shock; BA Anthropology. Spent a year in Paris working as an au pair and teaching English. Received MA in Folklore from Newfoundland, Canada. A very satisfying career of 40 years in the history museum field the last 27 at the Mercer Museum in Doylestown, PA where I met my husband, Rich Duvall. Along the way: Volunteering on fascinating archaeology projects (Peru, Ireland, Switzerland) as well as many non-profit boards. Hip replacements in my 40s kept me off the tennis court but they continue to propel me forward. 25 years vacationing on the Maine coast with my two sisters and husband plus wonderful trips worldwide with my sisters. Rich and I have also enjoyed US and European travel. Retired since 2016, I have

more time for non-profits important to me and I continue to volunteer at the Mercer Museum. We enjoy part of the winter in Florida and get back to Nahant for a visit in summer.

Joan Fenno Mansfield I went from Winsor to Stanford.

My goal was to get as far away from Boston as I could. I met my husband Fred Mansfield at Stanford and we both returned here to Harvard Medical School. Fred is a spine surgeon.

I am a pediatric endocrinologist and adolescent medicine specialist. We have two children, Chris and Carolyn, who are both back in Boston with their spouses for the first time this year. We have a grandchild Will Mansfield who is 13 months old. I have cut back to working just 2 days a week at Boston Children’s Hospital in the Adolescent/Young Adult unit.

I babysit Will on Wednesdays which is the highlight of my week. I just revived some interests not pursued since Winsor by joining our Unitarian church choir in Lincoln (I am a tenor!) and starting a watercolor class. I continue to ride my horse, Alex, who is a 9-year-old Lusitano three days a week. I do dressage (occasionally competing). We are going skiing with our kids next week in Utah. We still do downhill. I like cross country best.

We do a lot of day hiking. We are keeping the family house in Bar Harbor going (great day hiking in Acadia).

Claire Altschuler Marx Although a psychiatric MSW by trade, I spent my professional life as a psychodramatist, using role playing

for therapeutic and training purposes.

Learning to” role reverse,” not only with my clients but with those in my emotional world and the wider world at large, expanded my own “role repertoire” considerably. I married an inveterate New Yorker (Corny) and, though I had one foot on the shuttle for years, am now one as well.

Marrying late, I chose a smart, funny and kind man and as a bonus got two children, Daniel (28) & Sarah (26), in “under the wire.” The books I read at Winsor and the teachers who taught them played a large part in making me who I am, as did my Winsor friends who are my best friends to this day. Currently I worry over the state of the world, although years of experience and memories of 1968 & Nixon remind me that there is precedent and we came through. (There has to be some upside to aging...).

Good books, theater, meals with friends, travel, nature, and a sense of humor help too.

Elizabeth Hill McLoughlin Hello. For the last twenty years I have been splitting residences between London and Cohasset, but am creeping back to spend more time in the US to be with my 10 grandchildren, among other activities. Happy 50th, all.

Mary Stockton Mosley Wow! 50 years. Does anyone still feel 12? My journey has brought me to Western MA. To the small rural community of Ashfield. Here I have settled and focused on a life as an artist using the landscape as a canvas with a lovely forest studio where ideas percolate into a variety of genres.

I do miss the ocean having lived in

Newburyport for 35 years, raising two amazing sons, Jason and Taylor. I return to the coast frequently, enough to get some ocean time. Over the years I have had the pleasure of combining my professional life as a geriatric nurse, with my artistic life.

I facilitate creative art programs for Elder and Intergenerational groups.

With this work, I have made deep and profound connections, and am awed by what can emerge in expression. My life choices have manifested a diverse spectrum of encounters and experiences, and thankfully, the awareness of social justice. My commitment to the relationship with nature and artistic expression feeds my soul and allows for the clarity of purpose. What could be better 50 years later?

Elizabeth Allen Nash My eight years at Winsor mattered a great deal. I admire and have maintained friendships with many of my classmates. I am grateful for my curiosity and lifelong appetite for learning and exploration. Life is richer for my Winsor experience. My political convictions have informed much of my work and my interests. After college I spent ten years working with labor unions on occupational health and safety issues while completing a Master’s in Public Health. I went on to work as an organizer and fundraiser for Mario Cuomo in his first Gubernatorial race, on other Democratic campaigns and for community organizations. My most rewarding experiences came with Hillary Clinton’s Presidential campaigns. Despite the outcomes I feel privileged to have worked for her and alongside her brilliant staff. I have lived in New York

City for most of my adult life. It suits me very well. I love the pace, the melting pot —messy, sassy, humane.

I’m married to Tom Nash, a dedicated internist. I have one child - Katie who is a pediatric Chief Resident at Boston Children’s—and a brand-new son-in-law Toby Bloom. Katie, other family and friends bring me back home to Boston frequently.

Patricia Potter The most important part of the last fifty (!) years has been my relationships with family and friends. I am very close with my sister and brother, their spouses and my three nephews, with their developing families. I have networks of friends who are auxiliary families. Nothing pleases me more than being able to spend time with beloved people—eating, experiencing any art form (as spectator), travelling, sometimes cooking (also as spectator), taking long walks and generally talking about whatever is on our minds—ourselves, the people in our lives and our activities. And these days the state of the world is never far from our minds. After college I went to medical school, then trained in child, adolescent and adult psychiatry and then psychoanalysis.

I still practice, learn, and teach in those areas. My affiliation with the related professional organizations has enriched my work life. A last area of involvement for me is my college class. Somehow I ended up being on the committee that plans reunions.

Through my involvement with the committee I have continued to meet interesting new people and make new friends. My message for all of us in 2019 is from EM Forster: “Only Connect.”

Susanna Sturgis Looking back, I see three themes: my life has organized itself around words; I’ve mostly lived and worked where I can dress in barn clothes; and the class of ’69 was my first girl gang.

After the antiwar movement knocked me off my Middle East trajectory, my high points include a solo hitchhike around Britain and Ireland, book buyer for D.C.’s feminist bookstore, the Feminist Women’s Writing Workshops, and features editor for a weekly newspaper on Martha’s Vineyard, where I moved “for a year” in 1985 and which I never left. Since then I’ve picked up and explored several stitches I dropped in my younger days: theater, singing, horses, the Arab world, and, most recently, electoral politics. I barely knew what an editor was when I got my first editorial job in 1979, but I was clearly destined to be one and the editorial trade has been my mainstay ever since. Writing, though, is my reason for being in the world. My forte is nonfiction, but along with many essays and reviews I’ve managed one full-length and three one-act plays, some poems and short stories, and one novel. Muses willing, the second will be done by the time you read this.

Kim Ky Beaulieu Our upcoming reunion has brought back so many wonderful memories.

I’m looking forward to catching up with everyone about your adventures these past twenty-five years. Until then, here’s my quick update. I graduated from Brown University (Biology) and joined IBM as an IT Consultant.

I transitioned into graphic design and user experience design as a contractor for various organizations. I worked at Fresenius Medical Care as a User Experience Designer/Creative Director.

Along the way, I reconnected with a friend I worked with at IBM, fell head over heels in love and married him four years later. I am now a stayat-home mom to my eight-year-old

son, Edmund. I’m contemplating returning to work, but I’m hesitant to trade the joys of volunteering as class parent, leading class nature walks and indulging in taichi, pottery, sewing, knitting for the stress of juggling family and work demands.

Lindsay Bleier After 25 years crisscrossing the country (Midwest, SF, Boston, NYC and Seattle), my family moved into our current home outside NYC the day we brought our youngest home from the hospital... in the midst of a home renovation. Never a dull moment, it’s great being back East raising three kids (Sophie (10), Theo (7) and Caroline (2)) with my husband, Ken Kim. With stints in consulting, biz dev and lawyering, my career has always been tied to

technology. I have spent the last 5 years at Smartsheet, including a professional highlight where I attended our IPO bell ringing ceremony at the NYSE. Interests kindled during formative years at Winsor developed into lifelong pursuits: an appreciation for art history nurtured in Ms. Mahoney’s class led me to join the board of the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum and I am an active mentor to rising women in business through the Parity Professional Program.

Octavia Devon Salvete omnes! After fourteen years away, I returned home in 2015. Very happy to be back, I’m a staff urologist at Lahey and live in Weston with my dearest feline, Vergil. I sing weekly with church choir; Allegra Devon Maletz ’99 and I are the entire alto section. Thankfully, my parents are still in the same house in Brookline and my brother Bart visits during holidays. I also volunteer on the Board of the Radcliffe Choral Society Foundation. During Reunion planning, it seems that we’ve all inevitably changed since 1994; nonetheless, our shared Winsor spirit and memories are easily and quickly rekindled - very much looking forward to seeing you all! I eventually went back to medical school as a nontraditional (e.g. OLD, haha!) student and am now working at Brown as an emergency physician

and director of the ultrasound division. Loving RI, it is beautiful in the summer. Can’t wait to catch up!

Mary Gallagher Grateful for family, friendships, and the foundation of a Winsor education. My professional path from equity and currency trading to public sector management may seem haphazard, yet is ultimately rooted in Pilgrim Road values: curiosity for accumulating knowledge, interest in developing, honing, and applying skills, leading by example, challenging myself to excel. I work hard and regularly reflect on sound mind, sound body. I love to travel, find joy in art and music, and I’m still passionate about Boston sports (actively seeking bucket list items thanks to Stanley Cup, World Series, and Super Bowl Championships occurring in my lifetime). I live in Boston’s South End and am constantly seeking new hobbies (budding ukulele player)! I’m most proud to be a daughter, sister, aunt (9 beautiful nieces and nephews), and friend. I’m truly thankful for the opportunity I had to attend Winsor—faculty unparalleled and friendships to last a lifetime.

Courtney Walker Hendricson Living in Cheshire CT with husband Adam and 2 daughters Finley (7) and Merritt (2) who keep us busy. Working as a consultant in municipal economic development. Looking forward to seeing everyone back in Boston in May! Katherine Ives Since graduating from Winsor and Harvard, I’ve focused on literature, mountains and mountain communities. After two years in the Peace

Corps in Mongolia, I got an MFA at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and I studied at the Banff Mountain and Wilderness Writing Program. In 2004, I began to work for Alpinist, a climbing journal, and I’ve remained there ever since—becoming the editor-in-chief in 2012. My writing and translations have appeared in various publications, including The New York Times, Circumference, 91st Meridian, Outside, The Rumpus and Patagonia’s Field Reports—and the anthologies Rock, Paper, Fire: The Best of Mountain and Wilderness Writing and Waymaking: An Anthology of Women’s Adventure Writing, Poetry and Art. In 2016, I received the H. Adams Carter Literary Award from the American Alpine Club, and I’m currently (finally) at work on my own first book. I enjoy ice climbing and skiing by moonlight.

Carrie Jenks After college and practicing environmental law in DC, my husband, Michael, and I moved back to the Boston area and now live in Carlisle.

For the last 11 years, I have worked as a lawyer and lobbyist at an environmental consulting firm based in Concord, though much of my work is in DC and focuses on federal energy policy working with the electric sector.

Michael and I have two children—a ten-year-old son and a six-year-old daughter. Both of our parents now live in Cape Cod so we continue to escape to the Cape as much as possible. Now, 25 years later, I think back fondly on the inspiring teachers at Winsor and look forward to seeing you all in May. Alison Killilea 25 years! Unbelievable. to San Francisco where I lived for many years and had the best time with Winsor friends Courtney Schacht ’94, Christina Harding ’94 and Suzanne Norris ’94. Later, I pursued an MBA at Wharton and joined W Capital Partners, a private equity firm in New York where I am a partner today. My twenty-year finance career has been incredibly rewarding, but by far my favorite role is wife to Dan Neuwirth, a New Yorker I met skiing in 2009, and mom to son, Charlie (5), and daughter, Grace (2.5).

We live in the West Village, spend as much time outdoors in Amagansett as possible. It has been a busy 25 years, but none have been more formative than the five I spent at Winsor. I am grateful for the values Winsor instilled in me that have informed so many life choices.

Anne Lesburg After Winsor, I went to Harvard where I majored in crew. Kidding, sort of. I rowed for four years with wonderful strong women and studied Classics with Mrs. Souvaine urging me on in spirit. After a few years I returned to school where I (literally) ran into Tavie Devon ’94 on my first day of medical school! We were THIS CLOSE to couples matching, but after 15 years of education together thought better of it. On to residency in DC I went where I have been an academic hospitalist ever since. More importantly, I met my husband Greg and we have two beautiful and smart (in my biased opinion) and funny and tall (obviously) kids—Matthew (7) and Sophie (4), who are the best things that have ever happened to me. I love hearing about the changes at Winsor from

Courtney French MacConnell Amazed that it has been 25 years since we left Winsor! I am living in Stowe, Vermont with my husband (Mike) and our 2 boys (Indy & Cash).

We moved here from Boston a few years ago and we are loving the mountain lifestyle. Lots of time skiing, mountain biking and hiking. I am celebrating 12 years at Google and currently working on our Shopping platform. Looking forward to seeing everyone at reunion.

my husband, Adam, and we have two amazing kids. My son, Finn, is 3 and my daughter, Amelie, is 2. We live in Natick with our golden retriever, Bella. Prior to getting married, I went to graduate school in San Diego, getting my MBA and my MS in Accounting and started my accounting career with KPMG. I lived in Dallas and spent a summer in Chicago before returning back to Boston and getting my CPA. Currently, I am a financial controller for a medical devices startup. Life is good, and I hope the same for all my classmates.

Suzanne Ranere Norris Happy 25th! I’ve enjoyed the years since Winsor... I now live in Cohasset with my husband, Jack, and our 3 kids (Owen (10), Cooper (8) and Kate (4)).

We lived in NYC for 10 years, and since moving back in 2013, we’ve enjoyed small town life as we juggle work, school, sports and negotiating how many hours our kids can spend on XBox. While I love being a Mom to our kids, I also love working and have been at Victress Capital, an early-stage venture fund that backs women-led start-ups, for the past 3 years.

I joined the Winsor Alumnae Board 2 years ago and it’s given me many chances to reconnect on campus and elsewhere with Alums. And as I get older, I realize even more how lucky we were to be part of such a dynamic, strong group of Remarkable Women!

Hilary White I can’t believe how time has flown!

After graduating from Colby College, 3 years working and skiing in Breckenridge, Colorado, I attended the Physician Assistant program at Yale University. I worked for 8 years in New Haven—then opted for a lifestyle change and moved to Fort Collins, Colorado. I work in Emergency Medicine for UCHealth. I love the daily challenges and ER energy!

I met my husband the week that I moved to Colorado and we have two little girls, Amelia and Ava, who are 1 and 2 years old. We love living near the mountains and spend our free time skiing, biking, and hiking with our dogs. I think we have a great work-life balance, though living far away from our families can be tough. I wish I could come to the reunion, but life is currently too hectic to travel!

Elizabeth-Anne Finn Payne I have been so fortunate both personally and professionally since graduating from Winsor twenty-five years ago. I am happily married to

Susan Glazer Yospin My Winsor teachers nurtured my love of learning, and it sent me on a path of life-long learning. After Winsor I got my BA in History from Harvard

(transferred from Wellesley), earned a PhD from Brandeis in European History and Jewish Studies, taught at Tufts for a stint, came back to Winsor as a teacher for five years (where Ms. Sable and Mr. Bowman were my mentors!), and six years ago I moved over to Buckingham Browne and

Nichols School where I am now Head of the History and Social Science Department. During all of that, I lived and worked in Europe for some years, met and married a fellow Newtonian, had two spunky and fun kids (Jeremy who is 9 1/2 and Juliet who is 7 1/2), and moved back to Newton.

I’m still singing with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus (the BSO chorus) and keeping busy with new activities like being on the PTO executive board at my kids’ elementary school. I am looking forward to connecting with my Winsor classmates and hearing about your adventures!

What’s Your Favorite UTL Memory?

This fall Winsor will celebrate 25 years of Under the Lights.

Archival black-and-white photographs hint at the “red hot” spirit at the very first UTL in October 1994. It signaled a new era for Winsor athletics, energized by the newly renovated gym and fields. Two years earlier, the first-ever night game drew 300 fans, presaging what has become a beloved

tradition. Today, anticipation can last all year. Winsor’s Archives preserves photographs, documents, artifacts, and memorabilia that trace the roots of traditions new and old.

Lauren Alexander Happy reunion year! I live in Oakland, California and work as a middle school counselor. I think of you and Winsor often when I’m talking to my students about the glory and the difficulty of becoming a young woman in this world. They can’t believe how many years I spent at an all-girls school. This summer, I’ll marry my outstanding partner of seven years, Jonathan Hillis. Life is good!

Carly Bernstein Since Winsor, I have started my career as a Physician Assistant in Cardiac Surgery. This past fall, before starting work, I came back to

Winsor to coach JV field hockey with Caroline Burke ’07. I currently live in Back Bay and get to see Leigh Feldmann ’09, Callie Moriarty ’09, and Charlotte Gardiner ’09 a couple times per week!

Leah R. Demetri After graduating from Winsor, I headed off to Stanford for college and fell in love with the West Coast.

I studied Human Biology, went fountain hopping, learned the rules of football, and spent lots of time outside. After Stanford, I spent a year living in Cape Town, South Africa where I worked on public health interventions aimed at improving sexual health education for teenagers. Most weekends I could be found learning to surf, wine tasting in Stellenbosch, and hiking Lion’s Head and Table Mountain. From there, I landed back in Boston for 4 years at Harvard Medical School, where I got excited about becoming a surgeon. I graduat-

ed in May 2018 and just moved back to the West Coast to start my Orthopaedic Surgery residency at UCSF. I’ll be here for the next 5 years and then will have to decide where to go next!

Madeleine M. Mitchell After Winsor graduation, I headed to Williams College where I majored in math, studied abroad in Granada, Spain, played JV soccer, and had lots of fun exploring the Berkshires.

Following college, I joined Fidelity Investments in Boston, and I am still there five years later working in Fixed Income Product Development at our office in the Seaport. I lived with Leah Demetri ’09 in Cambridge for three years, and I enjoy seeing Caty Rea ’09 and Kelley McNamara ’09 regularly for acai bowls and pilates (#basic). I currently live in JP with my boyfriend who teaches English at St. Seb’s, so I get to hear some pretty amusing stories about things like chaperoning high school dances. Outside of work, I’ve spent time volunteering with City Year and Pine Street Inn, riding my bike, and participating in a ladies’ book (read: wine) club!

Urboshi Pal Hi everyone! I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since we were all on Pilgrim Road! After graduating from Cornell in 2013, I moved to NYC where I worked as an executive compensation consultant for about four years.

While I enjoyed my work, I wanted to expand my consulting experience and explore strategy more broadly, so I started the full-time MBA program at NYU Stern School of Business in the fall of 2017. I’ll be graduating this May and plan to move back to Boston to start as a Consultant at L.E.K. Consulting in October. I am also getting married in Cambridge this June, and I’m thrilled to have Emily Hunt ’09 as my maid of honor and Alyssa Thomas ’09 as one of my bridesmaids! I look forward to catching up with many of you at Reunion. Hope all is well with everyone!

Mairead Reilly Since graduating Georgetown in 2013 with a degree in Arabic, I’ve been living in Maryland and working as an analyst for the federal govern-

ment. My fiancé David and I recently bought a house just outside Baltimore and are looking forward to our upcoming wedding! We’ll be getting married in October in the Shenandoah Valley, where we love to hike, with Kelley McNamara ’09 and Becca Willard ’09 as bridesmaids. Can’t wait to catch up with everyone!

Rebecca Willard After spending a year in Dublin with Catherine Rea ’09 studying Irish Literature, I went to Harvard College where I studied Government and French. Since I’ve graduated, I have worked at LinkedIn in both their California headquarters and now New York City. This summer will be incredibly exciting - I’m getting married in July to Ben Sherman, who I met my freshman year in college.

Winsor will be well-represented at the wedding with Catherine Rea ’09, Mairead Reilly ’09, and Meredith Traquina ’09 all in my bridal party, and with Ben’s grandmother Anastasia Thannhauser Dunau ’37 in attendance. Looking forward to seeing Winsor ’09!

Carpe Diem A senior reflects on taking risks, seizing opportunities, and leading the way for others to follow.

rave. Humble. Compassionate. Deliberate.

Kaylee Chang ’19 is an inspired advocate for others—and for change. A well-respected student-leader, she thinks before she speaks, and means what she says. In her soft spoken tone, the senior shared her thoughts on a few things at Winsor that matter to her most.

The volleyball club (she helped start): I’m 5’1” (laughs). It’s not really what you see in a volleyball player. I’m not the best player on the team. But I bring excitement about the game. I just love the sport and wanted to help my friends learn it and love it too. Today, girls I taught are on Varsity and JV. It’s so exciting!

The Student Association for Fine Arts (she also helped start): So many talented students find it difficult to put their art out there. That pushed a few of us to want to change the conversation about sharing. To encourage people and make them feel comfortable and confident. Through open mic nights, LAMP (Winsor’s literary magazine) and other events, SAFA says, ‘Read out loud! Sing! Submit! People would love this!’

Seniors, and the Senior Homeroom (she helped design and create): The senior class has a duty to be the most supportive.

The excitement and the energy you see in the seniors—it sets the tone. I really wanted my class—and our homeroom—to embody that spirit and be that example of friendship, sisterhood, and leadership in the community.

The opportunity cost of not trying: Looking back, I’m happy I wasn’t afraid to try so many new things. I joined Model UN and Mock Trial because I was afraid of public speaking. I was honored to be the senior elected to the Honor Board. There were times when it was a lot to handle. But I feel like the opportunity cost of not trying was more.

Ask Joan about the school her great-great aunt Mary Winsor started, and she’ll reel off a long list of why she supports it. She’s grateful for what it gave her—all girls, small classes, sports—and as a class agent stays “connected to the vibrant Winsor community.”

Always good at math, Joan is a longtime CPA and certified financial planner with her own tax practice. Tying her plans to her passions, she named Winsor as beneficiary of her IRA—from which she also wisely makes her Annual Fund gifts. She saves on taxes and helps “keep Miss Winsor’s good vision alive!”
