How did wine vineyards in VA came to be?

English settlers had been trying to plant European varieties of grapes for producing wines since 1600s, but all in vain.
In 1762, Charles Carter set up his own wine vineyards in VA and proved that it was possible to grow wine grapes in Virginia, although his efforts to send the samples to England were unsuccessful.
Finally, in 19th century, when the native variety of grape, vinifera, was grown, it was successful.
After a century of trial and error, people were able to produce some wine in Virginia.

However, the wineries set up in Virginia in late 19th and early 20th centuries had to be shut down because of the 18th amendment in the law that outlawed production and distribution of alcoholic beverages.
But later in 20th century, the wineries started again and now, Virginia has close to 300 wineries.
