In the heart of Lovedale on the stunning grounds of Gartelmann Wines, The Deck Cafe has become one of the Hunter Valley's most beloved dining destinations. Located on the deck overlooking the dam in young forest bushland, this family-owned establishment offers an unforgettable experience that perfectly captures the essence of Hunter Valley hospitality.

Experienced Chef, Matt Dillow, opened the Café in July 2013 as his third hospitality venture in the Hunter Valley. Under his expert guidance, The Deck Cafe has evolved into a sophisticated dining destination that combines cafe favourites with a Hunter Valley finedining twist. Matt's passion extends far beyond the cafe itself – he also runs cooking classes, food tours to destinations like Tasmania, Italy, and Spain, and creates his own gourmet product line, Matt's Produce.

The Deck Cafe is open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch, serving delicious breakfasts from 8:30am weekdays and 8:00am weekends until 11:30am, followed by their renowned tapas-style lunch menu from 12pm to 2:30pm. The Tapas menu, available for lunch and dinner, is ideal for sitting back and relaxing with friends as you take in the incredible view, featuring dishes like Duck Liver Parfait, Blue Swimmer Crab with avocado timbal, and Lamb Backstrap filled with feta.

That sets The Deck Cafe apart is its commitment to quality and sustainability. They serve first-class food in a vibrant environment and make most of their ingredients on-site using locally sourced produce. The menu is seasonal, so it changes frequently to capture the freshest produce, ensuring every visit offers something new and exciting.

The cafe's location on the Gartelmann Wines estate creates a perfect synergy between food and wine. Matt purchased Gartelmann Wines in 2020 from founders Jan and Jorg Gartelmann, who established the cellar door and boutique winery in 1996. This partnership allows guests to enjoy dishes perfectly paired with Gartelmann Wines, which is conveniently located next door, creating an integrated food and wine experience.

The estate is an exercise in 'how to be successful', offering cooking classes, food tours, and special events throughout the year. Matt's animals, chickens, pigs, goats, sheep, geese, ducks and especially his two beautiful Alpacas, bring so much joy to a family day out. The property has become a favourite for family gatherings and local events, embodying Matt's philosophy that "You come as friends but leave as family".
