D.M. Eagle grads Daniel Hodare and Reed Hewitt clean up playground prior to first day of school How many 13-year-old boys would go to their previous school, on a Sunday afternoon, on summer vacation, before school opened, to clean-up and pick up garbage? Daniel Hodare and Reed Hewitt would! These two Tecumseh boys felt the need to help clean up before D.M. Eagle Public School opened for the new year – on their own accord. Daniel and Reed – both DME graduates – felt it was important
to have it presentable and safe for the students on the first day of school. Noticed After being out for walk, the boys noticed the school grounds had garbage thrown around. They went home to get garbage bags, gloves, a marker, some tape and paper and headed back to the school. They fixed the two composters outside that someone had dismantled and then pro-
ceeded to clean the garbage (including beer bottles) around the playground, sitting benches, and picnic tables. The boys felt it was a good idea to label a bag of garbage and take a picture to prove that D.M. Eagle deserves to be kept clean – even during the summer months! What great work and commitment to our local schools and our community – great work Daniel and Reed – D.M. Eagle Public School should be proud!

Strength for all seasons
Poets and preachers have long pointed out the similarities between the seasons of the year and life. In effect, we’re all born in January and immediately start heading toward December. Along the way, we’re initiated into life’s realities by the cold winds of winter, welcomed by the striking colours and flowery fragrances of spring, warmed by the pleasant breezes of summer, made thoughtful by the breathtaking beauty of our sentimental journey through fall and finally, in December, belatedly find ourselves beginning to think seriously about eternity. We’re also affected by the seasons of the Roger soul. Campbell An old hymn said, “Sometimes I’m up; Reflections sometimes I’m down, on Faith but all the time I’m heaven bound.” The composer, like most of us, had evidently known both valleys and mountaintops during his journey but had wisely concluded these ups and downs of life had no bearing on the ultimate outcome. Faith provided him a strong anchor when waves were high and assurance that a safe harbour waited after life’s storms. Answering the knock on our door, I faced a grieving father and mother of a young sailor. “All of our castles have tumbled,” said the father, explaining that their son had been swept overboard while standing fog watch in the north Atlantic and wasn’t found. My responsibility was to comfort them; to give them hope; a seemingly impossible task but their faith rose to the occasion. These brokenhearted parents were confident about their son’s relationship to his Lord and this gave them strength in their season of sorrow. Friends of ours experienced severe financial reverses. Their formerly thriving business was closed and they lost their home.
In spite of these tough trials, however, they found strength through their faith in God to keep them from despair. While out of work, they volunteered for missionary work in the South Pacific, reaching out to needy people with the message of God’s love. Job had been the wealthy father of seven sons and three daughters. Everything seemed to be going his way. Then trouble came in like a flood. His children died. He lost his wealth and health. His formerly faithful wife became so depressed that she urged him to turn against God and die. (Job 2:9) Even during this season of trouble, however, Job’s faith remained strong, enabling him to comfort his grieving wife by telling her this melancholy mood was out of character, proving his love for her was unchanged. In what season do you find yourself? Are you so down that you wonder if God cares? Martin Luther once felt as you do today. Then he heard a bird singing its evening song. As he watched, he saw the bird tuck its head under a wing and fall asleep. In writing of this experience, Luther said: “This little bird has had its supper and is now getting ready to go to sleep, quite content, never troubling itself as to what its food will be or where it will lodge on the morrow. Like David, it abides under the shadow of the almighty. It sits on its little twig content and lets God care.” My conversation with a December man (in his 90s) turned to the subject of heaven. “The days are getting brighter all the time” he said. His faith had been active for so long that he knew it would be sufficient for all seasons . . . even the final one. Roger Campbell can be reached by e-mail at rcministry@ameritech.net

How to stay energized throughout your wedding day
A couple’s wedding day is the culmination of months and months of planning. For most, it is one of the most memorable, magical days of their lives, filled with fond moments of time spent with close friends and family. As enjoyable as a wedding can be, most brides and grooms who have already tied the knot can attest that a wedding is a long, often tiring day. It is very easy for energy levels to wane. To ensure you have enough energy to last through to the final good-bye of the evening, follow these suggestions to remain energized:
ample sleep and look rested. It is understandable that nerves and excitement may get the best of you and make it difficult to fall asleep. If you often grow anxious and struggle to fall asleep before big events, talk to your doctor prior to the wedding to ask if you can be prescribed a one-time-only sleeping pill that will ensure you get to sleep promptly. Do not take this medication with alcohol, and be sure to take it only if you can get a full 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Otherwise you may experience medicine hangover.
brides wearing their gowns – it is essential to stay hydrated. Dehydration can result in headaches, weakness and dizziness and may make you feel cranky. Be sure to consume water throughout the day.
crash at an inopportune time during the day. Instead, a brisk walk outdoors may recharge your batteries. Afterward, time spent on the dance floor enjoying the reception will likely stimulate some adrenaline to keep you going.
Pack some snacks. The time between breakfast and the cocktail hour of a wedding may be significant. In your wedding “survival” kit, be sure to pack some easy snacks to eat. Trail mix can be nibbled for a boost of energy, and a banana can take the edge off of hunger pangs. Avoid anything messy that can drip onto clothing or get stuck in your teeth. Arrange to have snacks stowed in the limousine or another mode of transportation so that you can refuel on the way to the ceremony or in transit to the reception.
Eat dinner. When family is beckoning and the photographer needs to get yet another pose, it is easy to skip dinner. Be firm with your decision to enjoy your meal. After all, you paid for it and it should not go to waste. Besides, sitting down to dinner enables you to rest and absorb the atmosphere of the wedding.
Enjoy a hearty breakfast. At breakfast on the morning of your wedding, consume a combination of carbohydrates and protein. The carbs will provide the initial burst of energy you need to get going, and the protein will keep you feeling full. A combination of whole wheat toast, fresh fruit and Greek yogurt makes for a filling Don’t overdo it with caffeine. It may be start to the day. tempting to lean on an energy drink or a supersize cup of coffee to give you the boost you Stay hydrated. Although drinking a lot of need. But caffeine is only a temporary fix. Get a good night’s sleep the night before. Get water can result in more frequent trips to the After the effects of the caffeine wear off, you to bed early the night before so you will get bathroom – which can be cumbersome for could find yourself more tired than before and Recognize your wedding day is a very long day. It’s possible to rise quite early in the morning to begin prepping with makeup, hair styles, wardrobe and more. If the party is an evening reception, it could last until the wee hours of the morning. You may find yourself up for nearly 24 hours, when the cameras will be flashing and the video rolling throughout. Naturally, you’ll want to look your best throughout.

ome people believe that politicians and governments can solve all the problems of the world. That by simply passing the right laws and imposing the right regulations, leaders can solve complex social issues and cure society of all its bad habits. Despite this instinct, and as much as they try, politicians cannot change human nature. They cannot simply legislate away unwanted behaviour like meanness, laziness or evil. If they could, they would have already.
Candice Malcolm Let’s Talk Taxes That is why the recent proposal from the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation — calling for a $1.8 billion tax grab on sugar — is particularly naive. The Heart and Stroke Foundation calls for a series of bizarre and aggressive recommendations in a misguided attempt to solve the obesity problem in Canada. Their recommendations range from a steep tax hike on sugary beverages, to a new layer of bureaucracy to implement education programs. They even call for the federal government to “conduct surveillance” to “measure the free sugars intake of Canadians.”
That sounds downright creepy. Do they want the government to spy on us to make sure we don’t supersize our meals? Besides, are sugary beverages really the cause of obesity in Canada? Facts would suggest otherwise. For instance, there as actually been a 35 per cent decrease in the consumption of soft drinks in Canada since 1998, and yet, obesity levels have not followed suit. The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s recommendation paper also mentions that Canada should follow the lead of Denmark in mandating a tax on soft drinks and sugary foods. This is a strange suggestion, since Denmark recently repealed this tax due to its massive unpopularity. Denmark has been a leading crusader in the public fight against obesity. The Danish government targeted sugary drinks and beer as the culprit, and imposed new taxes to discourage consumption of these “bad” drinks. But these items were so heavily taxed that as much as 57 per cent of the Danish population crossed the border into Germany to buy their beer and pop. Much like Denmark’s failed fat tax — which was revoked only 13 months after being introduced — their sugar tax will also be repealed by the end of this year. Denmark’s experiments with fat and sugar taxes should serve as a
warning. These taxes simply don’t work. The Heart and Stroke Foundation has long served as a trusted voice for Canadians in nutrition and health standards. Their suggestions, like the recommended individual sugar and calorie intake, are followed by millions. But this latest paper crossed the line. Orwellian They are calling for Orwellian policies to insert the government into our kitchens to mandate what we eat. Higher taxes will not end obesity. Like with Denmark, it will just encourage people to find a way around the tax. These new recommendations are nothing but a tax grab to help fund our indebted governments and enable spendthrift politicians. Obesity can only be addressed through more information and education, and ultimately more balance. But individuals — and not governments — are the ones who decide what to buy and what to eat. The policies recommended by the Canadian Hearth and Stroke Foundation will not make Canadians thinner. It will on make our bank accounts smaller and our government fatter. Candice Malcolm is the Ontario director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation

Ask the Experts Did you know that heavy, loud snoring is a definite sign you may be suffering from a serious medical condition? Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) has been directly linked to heart attacks, strokes, and even death. Tell-tale signs of OSA are obesity, a narrow airway, snoring, and daytime sleepiness. Fortunately, there are many ways to treat your apnea and that’s where The Strong Clinic comes in. In addition to our main clinic in Leamington that opened in 2002, we have recently expanded to a brand new treatment centre in Tecumseh and we are looking forward to many prosperous years ahead at this second location. After focusing on the success of the Leamington clinic, I recognize this move as my homecoming to the beautiful town of Tecumseh; I practiced Denturism here for 16 years, and I am ecstatic to return. At The Strong Clinic we develop and manufacture custom-made oral sleep appliances that bring your lower jaw forward, which opens up your airway and allows for a restful sleep. My dynamic team is dedicated, passionate, and committed to working to improve your quality of life through better sleep. I myself am regarded as the leading Denturist worldwide in treating sleep disorders by using dental appliances. The SUAD™ (Strong Upper Airway Dilating) family of premium oral sleep appliances will enable you to effectively cease snoring and breathe uninterrupted. As a sufferer of sleep apnea myself, I have worn this dental appliance for over eight years and because of this, I enjoy a restful night sleep just like my patients. I strongly recommend that you contact The Strong Clinic today so that you may finally get the sleep you deserve.

The people of Tecumseh are my motivation, my passion and my team. I am a lifetime resident of our town. I have lived, volunteered and worked here for my entire life. As the daughter of past town councillor Henry Hayes I was taught that giving back to the community is crucial. So when the people said “Run!” Run I did. I bring to the office a long history of volunteering in support of local causes including ERCA, the BIA, Tecumseh Corn Festival among numerous others. I believe that in order to know where you are going, you must know where you have been. The keen knowledge of our town’s history that I bring to the role is invaluable to helping steer our town towards the future. The initiative that I am most excited about is the Lifecycle fund. We were taxing for the future to assure we can replace, repair and maintain our roads, bridges, trucks, parks, arena, and town buildings when needed. The Lifecycle budget is now fully funded Candidate for Ward 1 Councillor as of 2014. Meaning the end to the necessary 2.9% tax we collected in the past. Going forward, thanks to the careful planning of the previous councils I have been a part of, we can responsibly Phone: 519-735-8251 reduce taxes and still ensure we can maintain and improve infrastructure without needing to ever Email: ritaossington@gmail.com drastically raise taxes. ‘Mayor for the Day’
September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month Shoreline Week photo: Bill England
Mayor Gary McNamara presents Perla L. with Tecumseh’s mayoral chain of office to begin her ‘Mayor for the Day’ experience at Town Hall last week.
Big Brothers Big Sisters held its first Mayor for the Day program in communities across Windsor-Essex County last week. Little Brothers and/or Little Sisters from across the region had the honour of participating in the program in their respective municipalities.
“We’re thrilled to have the Mayors of Amherstburg, Essex, Kingsville, Lakeshore and Tecumseh helping us give children a memorable experience in celebration of Big Brothers Big Sisters Month”, said executive director John Sutton. “Anytime we can help kids discover their voice and help them feel connected to the community in which they live it’s a win-win scenario.” Big Brothers Big Sisters Windsor Essex has been serving our community for more than 45 years It is committed to serving children and youth by providing them with quality mentoring relationships with volunteers. They are currently serving over 550 children.
Learning in nature is good for teachers and students
Children belong outdoors. We know this intuitively, but now an extensive and ever-growing body of research supports it. Kids who spend time outside every day are healthier, happier, more creative, less stressed and more alert than those who don’t. Several recent studies even show time in nature or green space helps reduce ADHD symptoms. But what about teachers who take children outdoors, contributing to their learning and growth? More alert, calm and creative students are a plus to them as David educators. Suzuki Could they also benefit as individuals Science from taking students Matters outside every day? With Canada’s educators back from the summer break, facing the many challenges that contribute to the country’s high rates of teacher attrition — from increasing class sizes to mounting curriculum expectations — it’s a good time to ask: How can “nature as classroom” support teacher well-being? So far, only a few studies focus on the benefits of green time for teachers, but those indicate that teaching in nature has great effects.
A study out of the U.K.’s King’s College London suggests teaching outdoors makes educators more confident and enthusiastic about their work, and more innovative in their teaching strategies. By extension, schools benefit from the leadership and influence of their teachers who take students outside. Rob Ridley, field centre coordinator with the Peel District School Board, says he has seen many educators gain confidence and renew their interest in teaching simply from taking their classes outdoors. “Going outside takes away the boundaries of your classroom walls,” he says. “It opens you up to new ideas and lesson plans. You’ll step outside to study science or social studies, and suddenly you’ll see ways to connect it to math or language arts.” Hopi Martin, who teaches at the Toronto District School Board’s Forest Valley Outdoor Education Centre, agrees: “Teaching outdoors demands that we respond to the wonder of students and opportunities that arise. I could have a beautiful lesson on tree identification prepared that gets totally derailed by the discovery of ants on a tree. “Going outside has made me a stronger, more innovative, more resilient teacher.”

“If teachers are happy and connected to nature, they can pass that on to their students. They can be the role models parents want for their children — role models the world needs,” says Aryne Sheppard, senior public engagement specialist at the David Suzuki Foundation.
Teachers in nature

These often include sample activities, logistical tips and advice for getting parents and administration on-board. And many of the same organizations have published excellent educational resources for teaching outdoors. The Foundation’s own Connecting With Nature guides for kindergarten through Grade 8 are full of lesson plans, step-by-step instructions and ideas for engaging local communities. So while the idea of moving science or math class outdoors might be unnerving at first, the end result is more than worth it, for the well-being of everyone involved. “If teachers are happy and connected to nature, they can pass that on to their students,” Sheppard says. “They can be the role models parents want for their children — role models the world needs.” After all, those who learn to appreciate and love nature are more likely to protect it.
“The fact is, teachers aren’t just teachers, they’re human beings,” says Aryne Sheppard, senior public engagement specialist at the David Suzuki Foundation. “And research has shown time and again that nature makes humans happier, less irritable, and more creative and generous. “Teaching is stressful work, and nature provides a powerful stress buffer.” Despite all the benefits for students and educators, moving classes outdoors can be daunting. Teachers cite a host of barriers, from parental concerns to lack of time, confidence and support from administration. So how can a teacher ease in (or jump right in) to teaching outside? Ridley suggests joining forces with fellow educators for support and advice. Several online communities exist to help and inspire, like the popular weekly #EnviroEd Twitter chats. A group of boys with no past recollections must evade all kinds of dangerous scenarios in The Maze Runner.
NOVEMBER MAN ...............................................................................(14A)
The Maze Runner moves at a fast pace for viewers
You’ve awakened in a place you do not know, with no recollection of who you are, where you came from, and how you got there. When you ask questions, there are no answers, simply because everybody else is on the exact same boat as you.
Hailey Trealout At the Cinema The Maze Runner is based on James Dashner’s 2009 novel by the same name. It follows the young and curious main character named Thomas, played by Dylan O’Brien, as he tries to find his place in his new home – a mysterious place called the Glade.
For three years, boys have been sent into the Glade every month from a place no one can remember, for reasons they do not know. Surrounding the Glade is an intricate maze that changes its pattern every night, and anyone who is caught within the maze after the entrance closes at dusk, disappears – never to be seen again. To keep order and peace within the glade, a boy named Alby (Aml Ameen), who is known as the first one sent to the Glade – has come up with a community with order. All boys have their jobs, and the only people allowed in the maze, are the Maze Runners. Their job is to memorize the maze, to map out the patterns, and possibly find a way out. Through a series of
events, Thomas is thrust into an adventure that can either set him and the boys free from the maze and its dangers or kill them all. After Ably is injured in an accident within the maze, Thomas fights for his life to survive a night in the maze, kickstarting new dangers within the Glade and changing the course of the Maze forever. ‘Darker tone’ The Maze Runner is an intricate movie with several different themes and is known for its ‘darker tone’. Director Wes Ball has created an adventure that keeps the viewer interested, but mildly confused towards what just happened, and what could possibly happen next. The graphics were

‘Made-in-Windsor’ film The Scarehouse premiere on Oct. 5 at Lakeshore Cinemas Q&A with cast and crew to follow screening; afterparty at Boston Pizza By Alex Eden
Special to Shoreline Week
A Named Viking Entertainment, in association with Greg Monforton & Partners, present the world premiere of The Scarehouse, a horror revenge film shot in Windsor-Essex County, on Sunday, Oct. 5 at Imagine Cinemas –Lakeshore. Described by writer/director Gavin Michael Booth as “Mean Girls meets Saw,” The Scarehouse revolves around two young women exacting revenge on six former sorority sisters after taking the fall for a crime gone wrong. A Q&A with cast and crew will follow the screening and include a discussion on how making movies in Windsor is done. An afterparty is also scheduled at Boston Pizza on Manning Road, featuring food, drinks, and live music/DJ, beginning at 11 p.m. Sarah Booth, Gavin’s wife, plays the film’s protagonist Corey Peters. Supporting actresses include Katherine Barrell as the film’s antagonist, Jaqueline, and Kimberly-Sue Murray as Elaina. Filmed over 22 days on a $200,000 budget, The Scarehouse features actors hailing from Toronto and

THE ISSUES • Government debt, overspending, and overtaxing are rampant, I will ensure that Tecumseh does NOT fall into these categories!
Montreal, while much of the crew consists of student filmmakers presently enrolled at the University of Windsor. Shooting took place exclusively in the Windsor-Essex region, primarily in the former Knights of Columbus hall at 709 Ouellette Ave. Several local musicians are also heavily featured on The Scarehouse soundtrack, including The Blue Stones, ClassX, and MicLordz.
• Tecumseh has the space but hasn’t grown! Why not? More taxpayers mean more revenue and create economies of scale so we keep taxes low! More children mean no more school closings and ensure our hockey/soccer/ baseball teams have enough children to field a team. • Tecumseh needs a new/fresh council that brings a common sense approach, a clear vision for the future, and an action plan to get there!
‘Tremendous amount of support’ Producer Mike Carriere, who has worked with Booth previously on their project To Hell with Love, raved about the enthusiasm he received working in the Windsor-Essex area. The crew was met with open arms wherever they went and received a “tremendous amount of support” throughout the course of filming, he said. The Scarehouse will be released in Canada and the U.S. by Universal Pictures and D Films later in October, making it the first locally produced film to secure North American distribution at script stage and the first with a major American film studio. “This film could not have been made without the generous support of Windsor-Essex County, its businesses and individuals,” said Booth.
THE SOLUTIONS • Financial Responsibility • Growth • Fresh, common sense approach, with new ideas

Tai Chi exercise for healthier body and mind Tai Chi takes a holistic approach to good health. Incorporating many movements into a set that brings a wide range of health benefits to the muscular, skeletal and circulatory systems, with a soothing effect on the mind. The health benefits of Tai Chi are many and some include: improved focus and concentration; improved circulation; improved balance and posture; increased strength and flexibility; and reduced stress. With regular practice, Tai Chi can reach deep inside the body to benefit the entire physiology including the tendons, joints, spine, connective tissue and internal organs. It restores the calmness and peace of mind that is often lost through the desires and anxieties of daily life. Tai Chi beginner class format is quite simple. The instructor demonstrates a Tai Chi move several times, then performs it with the class and finally watches the students as they repeat it. You don’t have to be in great shape when you start to learn Tai Chi. That will come with time. It only takes three months to be introduced to the basic movements. Learning is a developmental process and after the three months, the more you practice, the more you benefit and learn. While all Tai Chi styles are about gentle turning and stretching, the Taoist Tai Chi style is specifically designed to improve health. So the significant and impactful degree of turning and stretching in each of the movements contributes to better balance and posture, increased strength and flexibility, and calmness and peace of mind. Tai Chi is not exclusively for the elderly. All ages benefit from the healing movements of this ancient art.

Nine-year-old girl donates 12 inches of hair to charity
Tamara Redmond hoping to raise $1,000 by Christmas
Tamara Redmond was very affected last year when a little boy from her school lost his battle to cancer. She asked her mother recently if she could donate her hair to children affected by cancer. “She is only 9, but has a huge heart and her desire to perform this act of kindness totally touched me, said her mother, Richelle. Tamara had 12 inches of her hair cut at Sage Salon + Spa in Tecumseh last weekend. She wanted to give her hair to a charity for children, so her family chose Angel Hair for Kids (A Child’s Voice Foundation) in Toronto. “She told me, ‘Mommy, I am so excited, but more excited for the one that will get my hair’, said Richelle. In just two days, Tamara raised $475 and at press time, that tally had reached $658. She is hoping to reach $1,000 by Christmas for the production of a wig for a little one. If you would like to help Tamara reach her goal, please visit www.CanadaHelps.org/en/pages/tamara-donates-her-hair-to-kidsaffected-by-cancer

Meet Bear and Gizmo BEAR Can anyone open up their hearts to this gorgeous and sweet five-year old long-haired kitty? Bear was thrown outdoors by his owners after they didn’t want him anymore. When TLC Animal Aid found him, his fur was matted and he was covered in scabs from flea bites. He has now been totally vet checked, groomed and ready to find his forever home. He gets along well with dogs, but really just wants a warm lap and loving pats on his head.
If you can provide a loving home for Bear or Gizmo, please call TLC Animal Aid at 519-981-1745
