If you’re reading this, we have a hunch that you,

Danced in First Ave as a teenager and cheered on the Twins under the marshmallow Metrodome.

Sipped a beer among fellow flannel-and-beanie donned locals, playing cards at a table of friends and letting a slower season settle in.

Feel a little flutter when lacing up your Minnesotamade boots for the first time every winter, hearing the roar of snow plows come to life.

Give the “Midwest mandatory” nod and smile to passersby on the street. It’s a habit that you couldn’t stop if you tried.

Your pair of skates (or skis, or snowshoes!) are tattered and worn from crisp mornings and sunny afternoons nestled deep in our nationallyrenowned forests.

2

Have dozens of sunset skyline photos from your golden-hour strolls around Lake of The Isles.

Can’t help but chime in about the blizzard of ‘91, and have a story about trick-or-treating through mounds of snow.

When a top-10 weather day comes around, you feel the deep urge to drop everything and spend it by the lake.

Know the real best spot for a Juicy Lucy and tater-tot hotdish.

love Minnesota at least half as much as we do.

We are Minnesotan. We squeeze the great out of the good and lean into tough times. We hunker down to embrace the hibernation and create incredible art, music, and goods along the way. Lauren VanScoy of Essence One put it, “Minnesotans are hearty people with huge passion, big hearts for giving, and overflowing loyalty.” The LAB team reached out to over thirty local brands and artisans with an unconventional, passion-fueled, off-thewall idea. The excitement we received from our community was encouraging and unsurprising given the Minnesotan culture of support. An enthusiasm for new ideas and the “next big thing” is something we are so proud to brag about. Instead of a status-based race to reach the next big idea, we operate with the mindset that high tides raise all ships. We love to see fellow Minnesotans succeed, and know you do, too. It’s one of the reasons we have so many incredible brands and artisans to highlight in our cabin. There is a fishing boat-load of thriving entrepreneurs and creators that pour their heart into our city and feel it returned right back. Every venue, art show, book release and store opening is buzzing and packed with local support.

Sara Wait of Slow Burn Candles said it best when she pondered, “I believe Minnesotans hold a sense of pride in our culture and traditions. We aren’t offended when other people don’t get our local sayings and endearing accents; rather, we

“I believe Minnesotans hold a sense of pride in our culture and traditions.” enjoy explaining why we are the way we are. My beeswax candles are special as they are without any alterations, similar to being Minnesotan.” At LAB, making connections within our community is the driving force behind every project we create, graphic we design, and relationship we make. If we aren’t making things happen for the creators we love, we aren’t living up to our full potential as a creative agency. And so, we are thrilled to welcome you to the Hydda-Way, the first holiday experience of its kind in our state. Our team feel so deeply about this project

because we love our creative community. And so, while we are crafting a love letter to our state, it is most importantly a love letter to those that inhabit it. There is a deep support and pride within our community that can’t quite be put into words because it’s so special, but this newspaper is our chance to try. In addition to supplying us with their beautiful products, we were fortunate to dive deeper with our collaborators and ask about what being a Minnesota entrepreneur means to them, and how it has shaped their business. From heritage brands that have been perfecting their craft for centuries to artisans that opened their doors in 2021, we are so proud to share our collective love letter to Minnesota. So, grab a cup of cocoa, curl up with a blanket, and get ready to sing your Minnesota praises. It’s the most wonderful time of year, and we’re thankful you’re joining us in our mission to create, collaborate, and connect. —Happy Holidays from the LAB Team!

We are a Minneapolis-based creative agency connecting business to their community through branding, design, collaborations, brand experiences & community events. LABMPLS.COM

The Meaning of Minnesota Any winter day can start with slipping on a pair of made-in-MN boots to embrace a snowy morning. Head down the street to pick up a locally-roasted coffee from the bakery making triedand-true family recipes. As you stroll, pass an explosion of color in a mural created by one of our up-and-coming artists. Swing through your local boutique to pick up a handcrafted cozy robe or a 100% wool blanket. Our most beloved rockstar, Prince, echoed this sentiment when he famously said, “I will always live in Minneapolis. It’s so cold, it keeps the bad people out.”

always live “ IinwillMinneapolis. It’s so cold, it keeps the bad people out.

You don’t have to go far to feel the Minnesota love. No matter where your feet hit the floor in the morning--the old hardwood of your 100 year-old family cabin or the sleek tile of a high-rise with a downtown view, the things that make our state great are ingrained in our daily lives.

MADE

Lillie Nell Beadworks We shouldn’t talk about Minnesota without acknowledging that we live on the ancestral homelands of the Dakota people as well as the lands where Anishinaabe peoples have resided since the seventeenth century. Our state name comes from the Dakota phrase “Mni Sota Makoce”, which translates to the Land where the waters reflect the sky. Though I am Choctaw and my people are indigenous to the southeastern United States, I was born and raised in Minnesota. I am grateful to feel welcomed and supported by all my relations that belong to Minneapolis’ vibrant Native community.

Ashtyn Sibinski Art To me, Minnesota means community and jewel tones and tall trees. I’m often inspired by the ever-changing seasons, the new yet familiar colors outside my window and under my feet as I walk to my studio - the warmth of community even during the coldest winters. Minnesota is large gatherings and small businesses. Minnesota is a weekend away in solitude. Minnesota is where my cup is filled and where I can serve others. All of these things find their way into my practice as an abstract painter and muralist.

TAGGART STUDIOS

The cycling culture in Minneapolis/St. Paul is like nowhere else in the country, which is why we consistently rank among the top 3 cycling cities in the United States. Essential to our business is that the Twin Cities invest a ton of resources into cycling infrastructure and it goes a long way into helping cycling commuters and enthusiasts feel safe and welcome.

I never expected last season to be my most successful thus far. From that, I’ve learned that even when times are bad, people become even stronger supporters of small businesses and truly appreciate hand-made items to bring them comfort and happiness.

To us, life in Minnesota is all about enjoying the simple things. It’s sledding and hot cocoa; it’s nature walks and skipping rocks. It’s going fishing at the crack of dawn, and sitting around a bonfire with friends at sunset. It’s boat rides on the hottest days and skiing on the coldest.

Minnetonka

J.W. Hulme Co.

Lucy & Co.

Minnetonka is a fourth-generation family owned and operated Minnesota company so it’s in our nature to treat one another like family too. We owe a lot to the Native American community who were on these lands first. Their language gave us such beautiful words — like Minnetonka, which means “great water”.

Minnesota means the great outdoors, engaged communities, and neighborhoods filled with kind, helpful people. To J.W. Hulme, Minnesota represents home, history, and endless inspiration.

When starting Lucy & Co., we not only received a lot of cheerleading from fellow Minnesotans, but people within the community were so eager to share advice and resources that could help inch our business forward, to introduce us to connections that could help us unwind a small business problem toward solution.

The Hirshfield’s Colors of the Hydda-Way “Minnesota inspired this mural in a variety of ways. From the warm jewel tones found throughout the changing seasons, to the shapes that fit just right and hold each-other up - like community, and the patterns that can be found on a morning walk or a long drive. I wanted this mural to feel warm and welcoming while allowing viewers a moment to pause and reflect.”

Working with Minnesota Ethic Part of the grit and stamina that comes with braving Minnesota winters is the work ethic it instills within us. These business-owners share how their entrepreneurial spirit is influenced and driven by the Great North.

The craftspeople we employ from Faribault are often second, third, and fourth generation family members of the mill. Their great grandparents may have met while working on our line. As the longest-running manufacturing company in the state, this is a time-honored craft we’ve been doing for 155 years. In the last few years, we’ve experienced a renaissance of the company, and we’ve been able to double our staff in the last year alone. We’re proud to have been a long-time primary employer in Faribault.

Hirshfield’s

I grew up in the small farming community of Jackson, Minnesota, and I have no doubt that humble small-town experience helped make Alora what it is today. Life was simple, and I was raised with a strong work ethic and parents who exemplified a desire to always do the right thing. I truly believe that applying those same values to Alora’s products and customers is why my business is still thriving after 20+ years.

I’ve learned that it’s so important to encourage and support others. In the Twin Cities alone, there are a lot of painters and collage artists and muralists and everything in between - and there is room for us all. Community over competition. I love the creative community and want to ensure I’m lifting up others and doing what I can to support their dreams.

Minnesota’s been home to Hirshfield’s for more than 125 years. Frank and Elizabeth Hirshfield, German immigrants, opened the first Hirshfield’s Wallpaper store in 1894 at the corner of Washington and Broadway in Minneapolis. Elizabeth ran the store while Frank was out hanging paper. Back then, wallpaper graced the walls of nearly every home in Minnesota, magnificent or modest. Not surprisingly, Hirshfield’s also has multi-generational customers. Paperhangers and painters who followed in their parents’ and grandparents’ trades. The longevity of Hirshfield’s employees is remarkable.

Here’s the Deal Spice Co. Our company name came from a saying Tom’s dad would always say up at the cabin. “Here’s the Deal Tom….we need to put the dock” in aka insert to-do list item here. This typically meant if you want something done right the first time, or be able to enjoy free time we need to do this first.

Lucy & Co.

Duluth Pack The hard-working no-nonsense approach to everything we do. We are not out to be flashy or trendy and that is what has allowed us to sustain in northern Minnesota since 1882, which makes Duluth Pack the oldest canvas and leather pack and bag maker in the USA. I started buying Duluth Pack bags and they were simply the best (I am still using the same briefcase for 29 years). I fell in love with the product quality and the brand and simply had to own it.

WINTER 2021

Good Office Day We love the heartiness that is necessary to live here and admire the creative spirits that form from that fortitude!

Being from Minnesota and located in Minnesota has rooted us deeply to hardworking values and community priorities. There is a certain amount of pragmatism, gratitude, and reverence baked into Lucy & Co. that is inherently Minnesotan. Our brand is not fast and flashy, it is not slow and sleepy, but relationship-oriented, delighted, and content. We set out to create a brand that celebrates the human/dog bond and encourages people to enjoy spending even more time with their dogs.

Holidays

The cozy drive home, the snow falling outside your family’s living room window, a mug of hot cocoa. The holiday season in Minnesota is truly unlike any other. These weeks are steeped in tradition and peaceful moments away from our everyday bustle sprinkled throughout. We asked what the holiday season in Minnesota means to our partners, and they have plenty of reasons to come home for the holidays.

I love living in a place where Christmas is celebrated with snow (*fingers crossed*) and cold. That cozy feeling with the holiday decorations, favorite childhood foods, a freshly-cut pine tree, and my kiddos at home is pretty hard to beat.

Holidays for Team Turman means it’s COLD! Kidding, not kidding. The holiday time of year is when I try to take a breath from my business, find that work/life balance, and enjoy family time with my wife and daughters. We get out snowshoeing, skiing/snowboarding, check out the holiday lights, drink some Glogg at the American Swedish Institute and embrace the winter in the bold North.

Punchy Magnolia All of my family is in Canada, so Christmas has been a time for relaxation and recovery, spending plenty of time being outdoors. Since the holidays tend to be quieter for me, a few years ago I started baking on Christmas Day and delivering to friends over the week. The most coveted item is rum cake.

While the allfamiliar, ever-popular hygge thrives in cozy comfort, lykke weaves together aspects of life and values that we can all relate to. Lykke reminds us that true happiness has no single source but is rather the result of our collective of relationships.

As we celebrate the north and bring together iconic Minnesota brands alongside local makers, it only seemed fitting to embrace and share the pillars of happiness that make up lykke - and the LAB Hydda-Way! These pillars not only inspire happiness and mindfulness in our daily lives but they also can serve as a gift guide for the people you want to celebrate or inspire this holiday season.

Happiness has a ripple effect. Let’s make some waves.
